Fallen monk: donkey birthday + 3 more

Baba

Fallen monk: donkey birthday

Namaskar,

This entire letter looks at the phenomenon of various avadhutas / avadhutikas who are celebrating their worldly birthday and glorifying themselves. Such a birthday celebration is called a donkey birthday party. We have to seriously consider the appropriateness of this. Is it consistent with Ananda Marga ideological teachings - or not.

~ One debauched monk snuggling with his young lady friend while celebrating his birthday ~

What is spiritual birth

Baba’s teaching is that during initiation one gets rebirth. Keeping this in mind, it is important to consider and rethink the notion of celebrating one’s physical birth and boosting one’s image.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “With an initiated person the first birth was the physical birth and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation. Such a person is dvija, born twice: First, you are simply born as an animal being. But this second time, as a human being. So unless and until one is initiated one is not, one cannot be, treated as a human being.” (1)

Thus one’s physical birth does not hold much value in the life of a spiritual aspirant. When a person gets initiated onto the path of dharma sadhana, that is their real birth – i.e. getting tantric diiksa and taking shelter at Sadguru Baba’s feet.

Sadhaka life starts where?

Regarding birthdays, it also has to be mentioned that our present life is a part life. It is not a full life. Our life began when our consciousness first emanated from the Cosmic Hub. Since that time we have undergone incarnation after incarnation.

Ananda Vanii states, “After millions of animal lives, a created being attains the human form...” (2)

Next Baba highlights the importance of one’s spiritual initiation as a time of birth.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “In Sanskrit, dvi means “two” and ja means “born”, so dvija means “twice born”…the first birth was the physical birth, and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation.” (3)

One should not think that when the spermatozoa fertilises the egg and ensueing birth is one grand birthday event. Life should be spiritually oriented, not goaded toward the mundane. Every sadhaka in the Marga should reconsider how far they should celebrate their “birthday”. For workers, there is no question of celebrating as they have given up everything of their unit existence for Guru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. At each and every juncture or stage of an avadhuta’s / avadhutika’s training they are given a new name because each stage itself represents a new birth – a new beginning, all the while leaving behind their old life. In which case, where is the scope for an avadhuta / avadhutika to celebrate their own worldly birthday and sing their own glory.

Indeed, all sadhakas in the Marga should take a moment and consider the points in this letter and see if really they feel it appropriate and beneficial to celebrate their own birthday and glorify their unit self.

~ Look where this monk has both of his hands ~

Donkey birthday and spirit of avadhuta / avadhutika

The spirit of being an avadhuta / avadhutika is to dedicate everything to Marga Gurudev. By getting avadhuta / avadhutika diiksa and by getting their new avadhuta / avadhutika name, they no longer have anything of their own. In that blessed state, everything belongs to Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. And Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is their mother, father, and everything. That is the oath they have taken.

They surrender their all – their entire I-feeling – at His lotus feet. Their name has changed; their address has changed; their identity has changed. They have no past connection with their worldly life, nor their worldly birth. Avadhutas / avadhutikas give everything to Parama Purusa – they have nothing left to call their own.

That is why in the conduct rules of the avadhuta / avadhutika, there is no such thing as the observance of one’s own donkey birthday or any form of celebration or glorification of one’s own unit existence. Rather the avadhuta’s / avadhutika’s goal of life and the be-all end-all of their existence is to glorify Baba’s image. They are to be established solely in Marga’s Guru’s glory.

Wt Conduct Rule states: “Avadhuta / avadhutika shall always keep himself engaged in the service of Gurudeva with sincerity and devotion, in thought, words and deed, in subtle and in crude spheres, in inner and outer expressions of life.” (4)

In that case, there is not an iota of scope to celebrate one’s own unit birthday, and pump up their unit ego. Our wholetimers are to think and focus on Parama Purusa.

Tadekam’ smara’mah…Tadekam’ nidha’nam’

Ananda Marga ideology states, “That Cosmic Entity alone should be created in your mind and no other object…He is the terminating point. He is the Supreme Desideratum.” (5)

How donkey birthday celebration brings degeneration

Celebrating one's own birthday leads to the degeneration of mind. Because by thinking of oneself, highlighting the unit ego, the mind gets smaller and smaller.

And when thinking of oneself in a glorified way by allowing an entire gathering of people to hold a party in your honour and sing happy birthday to you by distorting Baba's compositions of Prabhat Samgiita - which is what some of our acaryas are doing - then this goes against all codes of Wt conduct, etiquette, and spiritual life. Verily this runs contrary to being an Ananda Margii and disciple of the Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. Such a scene will certainly lead to one's degeneration.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Vanity harms the mind in three ways...The second [way] is gaorava, self-aggrandizement or boasting – projecting oneself as a great personality...Is this really something great of which human beings can feel proud? And what is the result of this self-glorification? Raorava means the seventh hell." (6)

Glorifying the unit self is path to degeneration

Some Wts are having the entire room sing happy birthday to them - by manipulating Baba's Prabhat Samgiita which is meant for the arrival of Parama Purusa. In that case, those acaryas themselves are the guest of honour, and everyone is there to celebrate them and jack up their prestige. That makes the entire donkey birthday event just about their own petty I-feeling. Those who are fallen like to do this otherwise true sadhakas sing the glory of Parama Purusa.

Ananda Marga sadhana diminishes the petty ego, enlarges one’s I-feeling, and imposes a universal ideal with the help of the ista mantra: “I am Brahma.” By regular practice, then one golden dawn, one will realise that, “Really, I am Brahma.” But celebrating their own birthday moves in the opposite direction by glorifying the unit self - “I am great.” Just thinking about one’s petty I-feeling the mind becomes smaller and smaller. Then one day such a person will be unfit to even have a human body. That state is negative pratisaincara. That is why Ananda Marga philosophy condemns self-glorification. Because that invites their degeneration. Celebrating one’s own birthday is the equivalent of self-glorification and that is why it is prohibited for Wts and true sadhakas. Baba forbids this.

Conclusion

For every aspirant, their first birth is the biological birth; and their second birth is initiation. For a Wt, their third birth is the name given to become a brahamacarii, and their fourth birth is becoming an avadhuta. Materialists think that their body is everything and life starts when coming from the mother’s womb. But, according to Ananda Marga philosophy, this life is a part-life. Before this life, there have been so many births and deaths, and births and deaths, and births and deaths etc. So why should one, especially a sadhaka, look upon the biological birth in this particular life as “the birthday.” Top of all, birthday celebrations are nothing more than self-glorification. Trying to establish oneself - ie. one pratiśt́há - is like the feces of swine. True sadhakas do not like to glorify themselves rather they venerate Parama Purusa. For all these aforesaid reasons only fake people celebrate their biological birthday and pump up their unit ego. Bhaktas never celebrate their birthday.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Jyoti

Three grade of monks

Some persons may raise the question that when Baba has given the birthday celebration chapter in Caryacarya, then what is wrong if our avadhutas / avadhutikas celebrate their birthday? The answer is quite clear. In Caryacarya, Baba also explains what type of meat a person should eat if they cannot resist eating meat. But that does not mean sincere sadhakas and avadhutas / avadhutikas should also eat meat or that we should appreciate meat eating.

Remember, Caryacayra is our smrti shastra – our social code – which is not eternal. It depends upon time, space, and person. All kinds of people are coming onto the path Ananda Marga. For some, Baba has given such rules for periods of transition onto the path of dharma.

Everyone knows that in Ananda Marga there are three types of sadhakas: pashvacariis (Pashvácára: “Animal Way”, the first level of Tantra practice in which the aspirant struggles against animal instincts), viiracariis (heros), and divyacariis (divine). Pashvacariis are half-margiis; viiracariis are mediocre sadhakas, and those who are very strict and do not compromise on points of dharma are divyacariis. There will always be a mixture of all three grades of sadhakas. Always, new people are coming into human life and they will enter onto the path of pashvacara. After many lives and with the grace of Parama Purusa, they will one day become viiracariis.

This point of eating meat in Caryacarya is for pashvaraiis. They compromise on various aspects of 16 points, but they are also margiis. They live amongst us – we all know this and recognize who is who. A person may not openly declare, “I am a pashvcarii; I am a half-margii”, but everyone knows. When such pashvacariis become strong, established margiis, their manner will be different. Then they will not do such things like eating meat and celebrating their birthday.

Just as meat-eating is a hindrance to those on that path of sadhana. Similarly, indulging in self-glorification – such as celebrating a donkey birthday is not conducive to one’s spiritual progress. Rather it is antithetical. Our spiritual philosophy condemns all forms of self-glorification.

No donkey birthday celebration for Wts

It is very well-known that no Wt or avadhuta / avadhutika should be involved in celebrating their own donkey birthday, boosting their little ego.

Many may recall how in the early 1970's when Ac. Nirmohananda Avt celebrated his own donkey birthday in Daltonganj, then Baba reprimanded him. With His great love, Baba wanted to (a) see Nirmohananda become a sterling example and (b) set the record straight regarding proper WT conduct. So Baba sent a strong message by rebuking Nirmohananda in front of everyone. Seeing this, all workers immediately understood that they have not come on this earth to party and celebrate their own unit birthday and honour themselves. That is not what Baba wants.

Since then nobody asked permission from Baba to arrange the birthday celebration of any avadhuta / avadhutika. Nor did any acarya dare do so. In that case, their degeneration is sure. As Baba warns, their destiny is the depths of hell.

Just donkey’s birthday

In Ananda Marga, if anything is done for superficial show or in an insincere manner then that is not at all acceptable. For instance, if someone serves you food only to show how great they are then Baba terms that food as: donkey food.

In Shabda Cayanika it is described how if food is not offered with proper heartfelt feeling then that food is donkey food, gardabha’nna. So one must not eat that food. (7)

Similarly sadhana done with the primary motive of showing one’s greatness instead of pleasing Parama Purusa is donkey sadhana. And if kiirtan is sung with the primary motive as a display of one’s musical talent and instead of to spread the glory of the Lord, then that is donkey kiirtan. Likewise, when any Wt or avadhuta celebrated their own birthday in their honour instead of spreading the glory of Parama Purusa, then their celebration is a donkey birthday.

About the degraded monk

It is so unfortunate the the degraded monk shown at the beginning of this posting is committing a double sin. First he is celebrating his birthday, and secondly he is snuggling, hugging, and squeezing the opposite sex. What more is going on behind the scenes, it is anyone’s guess. Whatever may be, this type of close touching and dealing with the opposite sex flies in the face of all avadhuta conduct rules. That is why we say this person (Chidrupananda / Cidrupananda) is just a degraded monk. He has his own way of dealing as he just sits in Venezuela surrounded by so many female groupies as they honour and cater to him day-in, day-out, always.

Those who do this type of penance feel love for

"Bándhan jetháy ceye chilum,se bándhan keno ná elo..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3752)

Purport:

Why has the Supreme Charmer, that most radiant Parama Purusa, whom I have been seeking, not come. He is the darkness of my nights as well as the effulgence of my days; He is my everything. Alas, He is remaining far.

I wanted a psycho-spiritual bond with Him to gradually grow closer and closer through the sweet ideation of my Ista mantra, different sadhana lessons, and dhyana etc: In all the ways up to transcendentality and samadhi - until ultimately becoming one with Him. I desired that by calling Him constantly through the repetition & striking of my mantra with bhakti and heartfelt feeling, He will bless me  His effulgence of consciousness. I wanted His eternal kindness, His extreme proximity and oneness. Alas, He is remaining far.

I wish for that bond of supreme prema. By falling in love with Him, His divinity will descend in my unit existence. Those who do this type of penance feel love for His vast creation also, as the neo-humanistic feeling sprouts in their heart. Then sadhaka feels each and every manifestation of this grand universe is their own.

Those sadhakas blessed by Him and engaged in pointed, arduous meditation surely love all beings. O' Parama Purusa Baba, You are my everything...

How to practice brahmacarya

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “This world is changing, moving. The word jagat (world) is derived from the root, gam-kvip, which means moving. This universe is the psychic manifestation of Brahma. All thought processes are moving and restive, and that is why this world, the psychic manifestation of Brahma. All thought processes are moving and restive and that is why this world, the psychic manifestation of Saguńa Brahma (the Subjectivated Transcendentality), is moving and restive. A thing that appears beautiful today is not necessarily so tomorrow. A sandesh (sweetmeat) that is delicious today will not be fit for consumption after a few days. Indeed one cannot even vouch for its shape still being intact. Every unit is in a state of change, and that is why the pleasure derived from unit objects cannot last permanently. So what should a Sádhaka (spiritual aspirant) do? He or she must ascribe divinity to every unit object. Everything is the manifestation of God. Whether it is land, home, river, mountain, respect, insult, day or night – everything is He and His manifestation as a unit. Make proper use of all objects thinking that they are His gifts to us. To enjoy or endure anything is to enjoy or endure Him. Avoid the attraction of the unit and make contact with the integral whole. When you are able to live this way, the desire to steal the property of others will completely disappear. In Ananda Marga there is a special process through which one can dedicate everything to God. The ascription of divinity to objects means the pursuit of the Infinite, leaving the finite behind. Are you feeding your son? No, no, you are feeding the son-like manifestation of Brahma. Are you tilling the field? No, no you are serving the finite manifestation of Brahma with your plough. Really speaking, the ascription of divinity to objects precludes their material enjoyment, as the objects then merge in the non-material Supreme Brahma. Thus the mind of one, who has established him or herself in real Vaerágya (the renunciation of all sensual pleasures) can never become attached to finite objects. Even in their midst he or she remains beyond the reach of their attraction and gains eternal peace after death.” (1)

Note: Some people are not aware how to practice second lesson. They merely repeat their mantra without taking any ideation. What they do not realise is that ideation is key for the efficacy of second lesson.

How to catch falsehood + 4 more

Baba

How to catch falsehood

Namaskar,

In this vaeshyan era, advertisers are notorious for booming their messages over and over again to consumers through countless media channels. With a constant stream of propaganda 24 / 7, they are able to influence people in various ways and put forth numerous falsehoods based on how a person should look, eat, drink, think, act etc. This is how they get people to buy their products - by booming their message until people accept it as a truism in their subconscious mind. After getting indoctrinated in this way, those naive people repeat and discuss those same ideas with others. In this way, the spread of those faulty notions multiplies.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How communist leaders spread false news

In communist nations, the leaders always project their false propaganda by booming their message again and again. They repeat their bogus views until the common citizens hold those ideas to be true.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Communism has survived long after the death of Marx. It survived only due to the force of arms and constant booming. If constant booming is done for something, then people start thinking that there must be some truth in what is being propagated...Communists are doing constant booming about their theory. Due to this people are being brainwashed, and at this stage it is very easy to inject incorrect ideas into their minds. By constant booming of their wrong theory they are creating their supporters." (1)

So communist leaders themselves repeat their false party propaganda time and again, and by this way draw a legion of followers who accept that communist propaganda as true.

A similar thing is going on in our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha organisation. Take the case of the various tiirthas or so-called holy sites. One group says that Jamalpur tiirtha is the "holiest place" and another group says that Tiljala is the "holiest place". Some think one place is the most important and others think another place is the "holiest". They each think that Baba is tied to their so-called holy land and resides there. For the margiis then, it all depends upon which group influences them most.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How to get the right understanding

As sadhakas we must be able to discern between truth and falsehood, otherwise we will be misled. According to Baba we must use our viveka or discriminating faculty.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Now, human beings are capable of judging between right and wrong because their minds are somewhat developed, but the minds of creatures other than humans are not so developed. Because of their undeveloped minds, they cannot follow the path of rationality, the path of discrimination, which almost every human being can. Those who say that there is no need of study – “Leave your books aside!” – are incorrect. Study is essential, knowledge is essential, and association with learned and enlightened people is essential. Listening to learned discourses, studying and understanding the scriptures, all have their importance." (2)

By educating oneself about Baba's divine teachings, that sadhaka will be able to develop the requisite viveka and hold the course of dharma and not be swayed by groupist agendas.

Blind people cannot discriminate between proper & improper

If however anyone fails to adhere to Baba's tenet and does not study Ananda Marga ideology, then their plight will be similar to that of the bird in Baba's below teaching.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "But animals less-evolved than humans are incapable of this. They cannot follow the path of rationality or conscience. The more-developed animals merely follow the path of sentiment. When an animal likes something, it runs after it; when it does not like it, it does not run after it. For instance, a dog runs toward a piece of bread without looking to either side. Or, for example, some grains of rice are spread under a net. Suddenly a bird catches sight of the grains and alights on the ground. It thinks: “Let me go down and eat them!” So it is caught in the net. But had it pursued the path of rationality, it would have thought: “Hmmm, rice is strewn in such a remote woodland! This is unnatural. There is neither a village nor rice fields nearby – so this is indeed strange. Let me think this over for a while… Aha! A net has been spread and ropes are laid on all sides. I must not alight there!” This is the way of logic. But if it follows the path of sentiment it will alight and be caught in the net..." (3)

In His next teaching, Baba warns us about falling prey to any kind of sentiment like groupist sentiment.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "If someone moves along the path of sentiment instead of the path of rationality, there is a hundred percent probability of great danger. Those who move along the path of sentiment do not discriminate between the proper and the improper, but merely silently accept all superstitions surrounding the goal towards which they have been running. Even the least question regarding propriety or impropriety does not arise in their minds, because they are moving along the path of sentiment." (4)

Conclusion

In this situation, where all the group's are fast propagating their own gospel, the only way to keep firm to the path is to study Baba's divine teachings. And one should be keenly aware that the campaigns stemming from a particular camp will contain news tainted by a given agenda.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The best remedy then is Baba's divine teachings. He has given so many discourses. Only when one is cent-per-cent familiar with Baba's eternal guideline can one keep away from the group agendas. We are not to believe on hearsay. Otherwise, one will invariably be misled and get lured into following a particular group, instead of Baba's dharmic teachings. As Baba guides us, study is very important. That is the only way to uphold, protect, and follow Ananda Marga ideology.

Baba says, "Study is essential, knowledge is essential, and association with learned and enlightened people is essential. Listening to learned discourses, studying and understanding the scriptures, all have their importance." (5)

Namaskar,
In Him,
Sudeva

Nowadays, we all receive news instantaneously from all parts of the globe. The news arrives via news sites / newspapers, discussion forums, blogs, emails, text messages, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, television, cell phone conversations, and all kinds of ways. A key point in all of this is how to gather, receive, and best understand that news. How are we to know what is true and what is false - not just about news of the general society, but news from within our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha as well.

~ In-depth study ~

Truth is one - not many

In reality however, the universal truth is always the same, not many. Here are some common examples:
(a) 2 + 2 = 4; it will never be that a 2 + 2 = 3, 6, or 9.
(b) a triangle has 3 sides; it will never be that a triangle has 11, 12, or 14 sides.
(c) a healthy dog has 4 legs; it is not the case that a fit dog has 1 or 7 legs.

These statements are true in all conditions. They are singular in nature not plural. There are not multiple truths. The truth is one. Same is the case with Ananda Marga ideology. It is one dharmic truth - not many.

Repeat “truths” till margiis believe it

In this following teaching, Baba describes the irony of how various religious factions or sects each claim to offer the supreme truth, yet each faction offers a different message.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "The supporters of each and every scripture say, “Ours is the message of God, it is the supreme word.” Then if all the scriptures are messages of the same Supreme Being, why do they vary from one another? The Supreme Being is one, and if all the scriptures are messages of that single Supreme Being, then there should not be any variation amongst themselves. This shows that those scriptures are not the messages of that Supreme Being." (6)

Similarly, the theology of various groups differ from one other yet each claims that theirs is the message of Baba. And this leads to serious problems.

Each group promotes their own false propaganda - or their own separate set of "truths" - which gets repeated again and again until all the margiis in their group buy into that propaganda. By this way, margiis of different groups grow very far apart because they are all adhering to a different "truth". Thus the schism deepens.

In this way there are many examples of how each group does booming about their own false notions to their followers. Each group claims to be the path of truth yet all have distinctly different propaganda.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Indoctrinate their followers into their agenda

There are some margiis who think that the observance of mahaprayan is ok and they are telling their friends to participate because it is "consistent with Ananda Marga philosophy". In that case, how can one accuse those innocent margiis of spreading dogma. It is not their fault. Rather some Dada injected this dogma and told them to celebrate mahaprayan and those people did not read and study Ananda Marga scriptures to find out the truth. So they got misled by that hearsay. Those margiis participating in the archaic and dogmatic mahaprayan function are not to be blamed. They were given faulty instructions.

Then there are some who belong to a specific group. Whatever group they join they are taught certain defective ideas and dogmas by those group leaders. This applies to all the groups. They indoctrinate their followers into their own agenda items. Those receiving messages from a particular group should be aware that they are receiving one-sided news, i.e. false propaganda advanced by a factional think-tank.

If the person or place from where you are gathering your news is faulty, or if that person is getting their news from a weak source, then you may be receiving incorrect news. This especially happens when the person telling you the news does not himself realise that what he is telling you is faulty. So with an earnest mind and sincere voice he conveys news to you, yet the information he is repeating is itself spoiled. This is one common way that wrong ideas get propagated.

For instance, some religions or religious sects preach that the world was created in six days. The priests propagate this notion. In response, their followers carry this message to all whom they meet. Because in their heart they believe this dogmatic and false notion. When the source of the news is himself devious, then news may reach your ears via other people yet you may not even realise that those things are incorrect. These are but a few examples from the general society where the common people unknowingly spread false news to others. The root cause is that they are being fed faulty ideas which they hold to be true.

Today my spring season is passing away in vain

“A'ji mor vasant jhariya' ja'y avahela'y…” (Prabhata Samgiita #1153)

Note for Prabhat Samgiita #1153:

Spring season (vasanta): In this song, the end of the spring season means that the bhakta has been anxiously waiting for Parama Purusa and now at the end of this spring season, still He has not come. It is utterly heart-breaking for the bhakta that still Parama Purusa remains away.

In the hope of His arrival, so many decorations and preparations have been made: flower blossoms, new leaves, a sweet breeze. Indeed the whole atmosphere has been made beautiful by nature for His divine reception. But alas, He has not come and now everything is withering away. This entire episode portrays the deep melancholic longing of the bhakta. That is the basis of this entire song.

The song can also be interpreted that because of not getting Him close, the spring of the bhakta's life is gone - the bhakta’s good days are getting wasted. The bhakta is thinking: My best days are passing by and You are not coming.

It is just like how the beautiful spring season, with its colourful flower blossoms and tender green leaves, gets overwrought by the hot summer when the burning wind dries everything up and the whole earth becomes brown.

So this song can be understood or interpreted on two levels. It can be taken on a more literal level wherein really the spring season has passed in waiting for Him. Or the song can serve as a metaphor for how one's good days (the spring of one's life) are gone and still He has not come close.

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, due to Your “indifference” towards me, my spring season [1] is passing away in vain. It is getting ruined due to Your neglect. The good times are passing me by. There was a time when sadhana was going well and You were appearing in my dhyana. I had Your company, and would receive Your grace. But today in my mental grove a hot wind is blowing; everything is getting dry.

Baba, now the sweet, fragrant breeze has completely disappeared from the flower garden. The lush green beauty, the rolling grass, and the canopy of trees are all scorched and covered with dust. My spring season is passing me by. The climate has become completely suffocating and unbearable. O’ Parama Purusa where are You? Your presence will be a soothing balm.

O’ my loving One, I am not finding You anywhere, my most charming Entity. Please come and smile in Your heart-pouring manner, in Your ever-new attractive form in this difficult hour. Please come and show the path and guide those bewildered people who have lost their way. Please bring this person on the right path. You are my everything. Except You, no one is mine. New perspective on psychology

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "According to general belief, psychology is a part of general science, and should therefore not be included as a part of philosophy. Thus psychology has been accepted as a branch of science in the West. But in A'nanda Ma'rga, psychology has been included as a part of philosophy. Moreover, according to A'nanda Ma'rga the scope of psychology is wider than what is usually accepted by psychologists." (1)

Note: Often we find in the west that psychology is taken as an intellectually dry subject, or some utopian idea, or something that does not have a link with our higher Self. Universities commonly categorise psychology as one of the social sciences. This started primarily because the western approach to psychology is dry - i.e. aspiritual. It does not have any link with the Supreme Entity. In true sense, the western approach towards psychology lacks sweetness and spiritual feeling. Perhaps that explains why we find that many western psychologists lead imbalanced lives.

In contrast, Baba's teachings in His book "Yoga Psychology" are completely different. This subject not a purely intellectual study, but a practical approach that is deeply connected with spiritual life. So it is our duty to remove the confusion in the mind of non-margiis about the subject of "psychology" and give it its rightful place.

Mahaprayan of one great margii

Baba

Mahaprayan of one great margii

🙏 Dear brothers and sisters in Him

It is with sadness that we announce the mahaprayan of a fellow devotee Mr Gina Singh from Johannesburg, South Africa on the 17 of January 2018.

Gina was initiated in 1984 and received PC in 1986 - during the floods. He loved Prabhat Samgeet and Kirtan- being himself an accomplished singer and musician.

A few months back he was one of the members of an entourage from South Africa who visited India- following Baba's trail from Jamalpur through to Ananda Nagar and Amjharia. I sure that many will remember him for the Kirtan he sang in Amjharia.

He will be sorely missed for the vibrant role he played at our DCs and retreats.

Gina will also be missed by the community for his weekly presentation of a radio program aptly titled Ananda Parivar. Gina was truly Baba's son.

He leaves behind a proud legacy, a devoted family - a wife, four children and grandchildren - all committed to the ideals of our beloved Baba.

Warm Namaskar,
Amrit

Note: We regret that we could not send this out in timely manner. Our apologies. - AM Universal Moderators

~ In-depth study ~

We have seen that when somebody dies then in offering their condolences people say now Mr So-and-so is sitting on Baba's lap. On other occasions when telling a Baba story people also say, "Such and such person sat on Baba's lap." But these days the trend is that "sitting on Baba's lap" is used more in connection with death. And that causes some confusion in reader's mind. To unknot the situation please read below.

Dogma: if "on Baba's lap" only used for death

Here are quoted lines from recently posted emails on various forums, wherein the writer uses the phrase - "in Baba's lap" - with the occasion of death:

- "May Parama Purusa Baba accept her in HIS divine lap"

- "May his soul rest in the lap of our beloved BABA"

- "Now she is taking rest in Baba's Lap."

- "May Baba accept him in HIS divine lap....."

- "May he rest in HIS loving lap of eternity."

- "We are sure that Baba has taken him in His loving lap."

- "May his soul rest in Baba's lap forever."

- "Let her rest peacefully in Baba's Lap - which she always desired."

- "now he is in beloved Baba's lap"

- "May his soul get peaceful place in His lap"

- "He is now in Bábá's loving lap"

- "May Baba bless him with a seat in His lap."

- "May BABA accept him in HIS divine lap!"

- "May Baba take him in his eternal loving lap."

- "May his soul rest in peace taking shelter in Baba's lap."

- "Please keep him on Your lap forever."

- "We all collectively pray to Baba to take him on Baba's divine lap forever.”

All of the above lines are commonly written in eulogizing the deceased. These days mostly it is used in a eulogy and rarely used to recount one's intimate spiritual experiences - unfortunately. By this way, the phrase "in Baba's lap" is being misused and step by step the real meaning is being forgotten as now people more commonly use the phrase to eulogize those who have died, and much less so to express their inner feelings of bhakti. Unfortunately, the meaning and inner spirit of the phrase is getting lost.

Baba story: "sitting on Baba's lap"

Some time ago after dharmacakra, a senior margii was recounting his experiences of having dharma samiiksa with Baba. He said, "After being lovingly scolded by Baba for my wrongdoings, then He called me close and placed me on His lap - I remained there for some time soaking up His love - and He blessed me."

We all enjoyed hearing about his personal account with Baba during dharma samiiksa. When he finished telling his factual and historical event, there was a call for questions. Various people posed their queries. Towards the end, one new margii raised his hand and asked, "How did Baba bring you back to life?"

Everyone stared at the new margii in amazement. There was a look of astonishment all around - people were really shocked to hear him say this. The new sadhaka sensed that something was wrong He said very matter-of-factly, "I thought that sitting on Baba's Lap means that he (the margii) died - that is why I asked that question."

This was quite eye-opening for those of us in the room: Through our language and expression we had unknowingly taught someone to think that being on Baba's lap is the equivalent of death. Because it seems that nowadays people only use the phrase "Baba's lap" when a person has died, such as "Let him rest peacefully in Baba's lap", as if in order to sit on Baba’s lap one has to die. But that is false. Sincere sadhakas regularly sit on Baba’s lap in their meditation. It is His grace. It is just like a child need not die in order to sit on his father’s lap.

The idea is that this phrase - Baba's lap - has been linked with death due to extreme overuse. So for some time if sadhakas use this phrase exclusively for spiritual purposes, that will be best. The phrase, "sitting on Baba's lap", should not meet a similar fate. It should not lose its pure spiritual quality and just refer to one's death. That will be very negative.

Baba would bless bhaktas and place them on His lap

There are tens of thousands of recorded stories by sadhakas where they use the phrase, "on Baba's lap", when describing their experiences of being with Baba: He used to bless them and bring them on His lap. People should understand the deeply mystical value of this expression, and not just think that Baba's lap means death, i.e. that you can only sit on His lap at the time of death. Still today there are thousands of margiis walking this earth who sat in Baba's lap. And not only that, there are countless more sadhakas who were blessed by Baba in dreams and sadhana wherein they sat in His lap. And still today this deeply intimate experience is attainable by sadhakas, by His grace.

There are so many ways an aspirant can reach unto Baba's lap including in sadhana. That is the main idea that should be preserved. Sadhana is a spiritual practice and one can sit on Baba's lap in sadhana. We should make it cent-per-cent clear to one and all that the phrase, "sitting on Baba's lap", does not mean death.

"Mahaprayan" means death of mortals - confirm for yourself
from the Samsad Bengali-English Dictionary

Mahaprayan (Death): Many are aware that mahaprayan (death) is the common term used in India and especially in our Bengal to describe the death of any human being, even ordinary people. In that way, the obituary columns of the newspapers of Bengal regularly cite the mahaprayan (death) of various persons of society who died or passed away.

Some may get confused and wrongly think that the word 'mahaprayan' (death) is one extraordinarily term of bhakti to be used in association with Parama Purusa. But that is not at all the case. Rather to do so is only to undermine the eternal presence of Parama Purusa. That is why no bhaktas ever use the word 'mahaprayan' in reference to Lord Shiva or Lord Krsna. Because Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna exist eternally. Then there is no question of Their mahaprayan (death).

Baba is Parama Purusa so He is eternal and there is no question of His mahaprayan.

Here it should be known that the convention of an annual death day ceremony (i.e. shraddhainjali or mahaprayan) is a foundation of the Islamic tradition. Muslims are well known for this, and their approach of an annual death day ceremony was adopted by the leader of a particular group in AMPS. So no one should think that mahaprayan is some type of sacred event. It is done on the death day anniversary of Muslims.

And for those who need still more technical proof then all this can be clarified quite readily by referencing the dictionary. Specifically in the Samsad Bengali-English dictionary 3rd edition on page 848. Checking there it will be confirmed that the word 'mahaprayan' means death. Which is why it is used to refer to the passing away of even common citizens. And that is the case in this letter also. The term mahaprayan means death and this is the ideal term for this purpose.

Mahaprayan is only for humans not for Sadguru

Here it should be qualified that there is both real mahaprayan and fake mahaprayan. Real mahaprayan marks the death of any ordinary human being, just like the aforesaid news. This is the proper use of the term: To note a person's departure from this earth. That is the meaning of the mahaprayan term and that is the standard way the term is used in Indian languages.

Then there is the fake, or so-called, or dogmatic mahaprayan. That is when certain vested interests try to apply the mahaprayan term to Parama Purusa. This is grossly inappropriate because when Parama Purusa Sadguru Baba is that Divine Entity who is beginningless and endless and resides always in our heart, then it is entirely wrong to proclaim that He is gone.

That is why rational margiis are protesting; because the Oct 21st program is so-called mahaprayan. So-called means that something is fake. Parama Purusa is eternal, thus for some vested interests to declare "mahaprayan of Parama Purusa" is nothing but so-called mahaprayan.

Mahaprayan only really happens in the case of human beings, not Parama Purusa. Those doing mahaprayan for Sadguru are hypocrites. On the one side in meditation they ask His grace thinking that He is ever-present, and on the other side they think that Baba has passed way. That is their hypocrisy.

Fake love + 5 more

Baba

Fake love

Namaskar,

Are eco-groups and animal rights groups neo-humanistic? Some raise the banner, “Aren’t all those animal rights groups and eco-groups in the west concerned about animal welfare.” The first reply is that many of those conservation groups subscribe to eating meat etc.

Secondly, those eco-oriented animals rights organisations have their limited agendas:
(a) so-called restoring ecological balance for hunting for fun;
(b) fighting for their own selfishness on this earth so they can continue hunting.
They got involved in environmental problems to support a meat-based diet. Those activists are inherently selfish and indulgent.

Some activists may be internally sincere in their desire to help animals, but in general they do not feel that those animals are expressions of Parama Purusa and that we are to serve Him by helping those animals. So the overall perspective of such advocacy organisations is not one of true seva and neo-humanism.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

History: animals have their special status

In the west, the rampant mistreatment of animals is fueled by the selfish, dogmatic outlook of the Semitic religions which states, "Animals are made for us." Because of this defective outlook, factory farming, hunting for sport, the meat- based diet, and so many other infringements on animals’ rights are pervasive throughout the western hemisphere.

The situation with regards to the treatment of animals in India is comparatively better. No doubt there are some pitfalls, but at the same time it has to be recognised that those early rishis of 15,000 years ago preached the spiritual ideal that all are the expressions of Parama Purusa. And this pure premise filtered down to the Indian masses generation after generation.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The thoughts and ideals of India are quite different from the other countries in the East. Since ancient times, India has been adhering to her distinct pra'n'a dharma. Regarding life and the world, the Indian people are certainly spiritually inclined. They look upon each and every thought and deed as part of their spiritual practice." (1)

And it is with this prana dharma firmly in mind that so many proper practices have been implemented in life such as a purely sattvika diet as well as a long-standing belief that animals have a right to live on this earth. Those animals have their God-given status and inherent value. And when things went overboard and the Aryans came from outside and started doing huge animals sacrifices and turning the rivers into pools of blood, then great souls like Buddha and Mahaviira Jain echoed the words of those rishis of old and came forward and opposed those cruel sacrifices. Though now in this modern era, the number of meat-eaters in India has dramatically increased, as the population has fallen away from the teachings of those ancient rishis. Verily, there has been an ongoing, steady degradation in India over the past few hundred years with the influx of the Semitic religions and the rise of materialism.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Pashupati: Lord Shiva and God of the animals

Ananda Marga philosophy adheres to the standard of neo-humanism. Using that as a guideline, it has to be recognised that the moral and ethical treatment of animals in India is higher than in those Semitic oriented countries like the US that are dominated by the selfish outlook that "animals are made for us - for human enjoyment."

This idea was never present in the Indian mentality. And one proof of this is that one of the names of Lord Shiva is 'Pashupati' - i.e. Shiva is not just the God of humans but of animals also. Certainly Shiva taught sadhana to animalistic humans, but that is not the only reason why He is called Pashupati. Mahasambhuti Shiva cared very sweetly for animals and preached this ideal as well.

Since long in India it has been known that through samskara theory humans evolved out of animal life. This also helps one recognise the value of animal life. This is commonly understood within the Indian philosophical tradition. Here the point is not to glorify the Indian outlook. It has its defects and has been certainly by infiltrated by the Aryans, Muslims, Britishers, and Christians etc. But at the same time we should recognise that those early Himalayan rishis who preached Samgacchadhvam, the yogic ideal, and other great teachings were also well aware that humans are to watch for the welfare of animals. And this message filtered down to the masses.

And still today, the common people in India will readily say, "What right do I have to hurt those animals, when those animals are the expression of God'. How far they follow this cent-per-cent in their life may vary - but this idea is commonly embraced. That is a significant step higher than the typical materialistic outlook: "Animals are made for my enjoyment."

So comparatively speaking, India's treatment and regard for animals is higher than that of the west, and that is all due to the respective religious outlooks of those lands. The Semitic religions preach that animals have no soul and are here for human consumption, while the spiritual outlook of the Indian subcontinent is that every being has its God-given place and should thus be respected. This is the long history and divergent views of western and eastern religion etc.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

But in this ever-changing world, it is quite apparent that now the unfortunate turn of events is going on where India has begun rushing headlong after materialism. Sadly, they are slipping into the capitalistic trap whereby animals are nothing but a means to an end. On the plus side, a greater number of westerners are trying to leave materialism and are harbouring a strong desire to fashion their life after age-old eastern truths. This switchover is going on. However, the tables have not fully turned yet. So comparatively speaking India's view towards animals more closely resembles the gold-bar standard of Ananda Marga and neo-humanism.

It is ironic that westerners blame those brothers and sisters in the east and in so-called developing nations, when the mentality entrenched within the Semitic religions is the real cause behind animal cruelty. By Baba's grace we will personify His teachings and spread the message of animal welfare to all - thereby eliminating, once and for all, the degrading Semitic belief that "Animals are made for us - for human selfish enjoyment".

Namaskar,
In Him,
Jayanta
(James Davidson)

The religions have a big effect on the mentality of the people. And in the traditional Indian outlook, various animals like the monkey are highly regarded as being so-called deities or mounts to the attainment of Brahmahood. And the obvious plus point of such religious beliefs is that they have helped infuse a certain respect towards the animal kingdom among the followers of that faith. Because the people truly believed that animals are not just lowly creatures for human consumption, but rather expressions of divinity etc. Whereas in the Semitic faiths, this type of regard for animals does not exist.

~ In-depth study ~

Ananda Marga is far above

In Ananda Marga, our vision and perspective towards animals is pure and unblemished. Baba has given all the ideal teachings and has pointed out the prevailing dogmas.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Hindus worship cows as something holy, apparently because they give us milk. But if cows are revered as mothers for giving us milk, shouldn't buffaloes be given a similar status? Actually, buffaloes give more milk than cows. Unfortunately, the blind religious followers refuse to listen to logic as their religious sentiment for cows has taken root deep in their minds. People are fed these ideas since childhood, so later on it becomes impossible for them to discard them." (2)

So our ideal is neither western, nor eastern - neither American, nor Indian. Our ideal is the neo-humanistic vision which Baba has given. That alone can save the fate of animals on this earth. With Baba's grand teaching of neo-humanism, then surely the future of animals is bright and one day animal cruelty will be fully eradicated.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "All molecules, atoms, electrons, protons, positrons and neutrons are the veritable expressions of the same Supreme Consciousness. Those who remember this reality, who keep this realization ever alive in their hearts, are said to have attained perfection in life. They are the real devotees, the real bhaktas. When the underlying spirit of humanism is  extended to everything, animate and inanimate, in this universe - I have designated this as Neohumanism. This Neohumanism will elevate humanism to universalism, the cult of love for all created beings of this universe." (3)

So in Baba's divine teachings of neo-humanism, we are to immerse our mind in His cosmic flow and realise the interconnectedness of all - that all are but expressions of Him. Fueled by the fire of this neo-humanistic ideal, then naturally one will act as a benevolent guardian - serving one and all and watching for everyone's welfare, be they human, animal, plant, brick, or stone.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How cruel human beings are

Here Baba points out the short-sightedness of the Semitic religions etc.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The vulture stayed patiently in the tree. It came to eat the cow’s flesh only an hour after her natural death. Human beings are more cruel than vultures. Their hearts don’t melt even at the sight of tears of innocent birds and animals. Just to gratify their sense of greed, they mercilessly slit the throats of animals with sharp knives and swords and thus deprive them of the right to live, even while preaching the hollow dictates of religion." (4)

Neo-humanism guides us, "Human beings led by self-interest have been neglecting ecology at every step. We should remember that the sky and air, the hills and mountains, the rivers and forests, the wild animals and reptiles, the birds and fishes and all sorts of aquatic creatures and plants are all inseparably related to one another. Human beings are an integral part of that vast common society. No one can survive to the exclusion of others, not even human beings. If they continue to destroy forests, kill wild animals and exterminate fishes and birds foolishly, it won’t serve any of their purposes. Whoever comes onto this world goes. One only survives on this earth for a limited period as stipulated by nature. Due to the foolishness of human beings many creatures and objects will not survive the period fixed for them by nature. Prior to their stipulated period of longevity they will be swallowed up by eternity. Human beings due to their utmost folly have annihilated numerous objects and thus prepared their own funeral pyre. Such folly on the part of human beings is unbearable. Human beings must be cautious from now on. They must restructure their thoughts, plans and activities in accordance with the dictates of ecology. There is no alternative." (5)

People cry out “You exist, O Lord, I also exist!”

The following is from Baba's book, "Namah Shivaya Shantaya".

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In the first stage of human life, when people notice the colourful processions of various tanmátras such as form, taste, smell, colour and touch, they immediately become attracted towards them. The entire universe appears to be a grand caravan of many colours; it seizes their senses and their minds rush after it, taking it to be the goal of life. In the first stage, this enchanting material panorama propels people from their inner world to external life. If at that stage, someone tells them to move towards the internal world, they become irritated and annoyed. They think, “Oh, I'm quite fine here!” Blending their colours with the colours of all, strolling on soft carpets of green grass, they think, “All these things are meant for me!” This material-oriented existence is the first stage of human life. At this stage, one wants to express only one thing with the whole of one's being, and that is, “I exist, only I exist.” The material world is the subtle blend of hard and soft.” (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, Trials and tribulations compel people to ponder deeply; sorrows inspire them to analyse the law of cause and effect. Their wounded hearts want to be soothed with a healing balm from an entity greater than themselves. They realize then that there is an Entity greater than their little selves. Whatever might be their relation with that Entity, and whether that Entity is within their reach or not, they cherish the hope of gaining something from Him: they cry out, Tráhi mám páhi mám [“Save me, protect me”]!” (7)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Then they change their mental tune and say, “I exist, You also exist.” When this relationship of hope and fulfilment fails to remove their internal dissatisfactions, when the greenness of the external world fails to moisten the desert of their minds, when the seeds of their desires do not sprout, then they realize that they will have to go still deeper inside – the key to the solution lies deeper within. They are still within locked doors and windows; in search of the key, they move inwards, but they are unable to find it. They do not feel that they are even near a guide – far less in close association. Concentrating all their mental anguish, they begin to shed tears in their minds, and beating their heads, say to the unknown Lord of their life. Parama Puruśa is the Supreme Cognitive Faculty; nothing is outside Him. He too feels the inner agony of despairing people in the core of His heart, and shows them the soothing path of enlightenment. Then those despairing people cry out in the exuberance of their joy, “You exist, O Lord, I also exist!” (8)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “They continue to move into the inner world. The charming allurements of the external world no longer keep their minds in thrall. The dazzling splendour of form and colour, their glittering attraction, no longer evokes any response in the innermost recesses of their minds. The radiance of the colourful world and the effulgence of their inner life become one. The indriyas externalization and internalization of tanmátras from the external world then appears to be a play of Máyá. The external world merges into the internal world, and ultimately there remains only one Entity – “You exist, only You exist.” (9)

Advocacy groups are not God-centered

And for those who few who may be internally sincere in their desire to help animals, in general they do not feel that those animals are expressions of Parama Purusa and that we are to serve Him by helping those animals. This is not their outlook. So the overall perspective of such advocacy organisations is not one of true seva and neo-humanism. Although such groups may seemingly be doing good work - they are not based in neo-humanism. Because they don’t believe that this whole cosmos is the expression of Parama Purusa and that we have come to this world to serve others - including plants and animals - and watch for their welfare. The fact is: No eco or animal rights group has this God-centered, neo-humanistic ideal in mind. Rather they are motivated by a selfish outlook.

For this reason, none of these eco or animal rights groups are on par with Ananda Marga. And in 99% of the cases they have their own particular side agenda in mind. Yet they are all our brothers and sisters and it is our bounden duty to guide them as best we can. And to guide them properly, neither should we be in awe of their work nor should we despise them as people. Rather ours should be a balanced approach where we recognise their shortcomings so that we may best help them to advance.

Key points for a long life

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Spiritual practice makes the mind calm and quiet, and maintains the nerves in a state of equipoise; and thus spiritual practice increases longevity. Those Vaishnavites who are vegetarians, who regularly sing spiritual songs, do meditation, perform virtuous deeds and think pure thoughts, live longer than ninety years." (1)

Note: By following the spiritual cult of Ananda Marga and abiding by general health rules every sadhaka is ensured a long and healthy life. That is Baba's guarantee.

Limited scope of human perception

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “In this visible world you receive tanmátras in accordance with your strength and ability. When the tanmátric vibration is more powerful than your strength or capacity, you are unable to receive it. Similarly, when the vibrational momentum is more slow and slack than your power of perception, you cannot receive it either. If people whisper in a soft voice, you cannot hear them – there you become deaf. Then again, if there is a very loud noise somewhere nearby, you cannot hear that either, for your hearing has been stunned – here too you are deaf. Your system may easily endure petty mental afflictions and in that case you do not cry before people. Then when you are filled with extreme grief you become so dazed and bewildered that in this case, too, you do not cry before people. You have seen a child suddenly stops crying in the midst of intense suffering. We call it “choked in crying”, for the child is unable to endure the violent sorrowful vibrations. You can tolerate a small pain with a smiling face and people cannot detect your hurt. An intense pain stuns you into unconsciousness and then, too, people are not aware of it. You are able to utter pathetic cries of “Ah” and “Oh” only in the intervening state to embellish your plight." (1)

Note: In His above teaching, Baba is guiding us how the range of human perception is very limited. If a vibration is very subtle then we cannot detect it, such as a very quiet noise. And if the vibration is very crude and powerful, such as a temperature of 170 degrees Celsius, then we cannot tolerate it and we will die. In the true sense, the scope of the vibrations which human beings can manage is of a very narrow scope.

There are so many things going on around us; there are all kinds of vibrations that we are completely unaware of. Some things we can detect with scientific instruments but there are countless subtle things going on around that we have no clue about. The irony is that even when sitting in an isolated room a person thinks that, “Nothing is here other than me.” When in truth, so many phenomena are going on all around, wherever you are. Those are extremely subtle vibrations which you can neither see nor hear. That is why it is said that human capacity is very negligible.

Why sleep gives happiness

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Although bodily pleasures are perceived by the mind in the wakeful state, the objects of such pleasures always come from without, with the result that the privations of the external world will always stand in the way of real happiness, as the external world cannot always supply objects in accordance with the desires and wishes of the mind. Due to this the mind has to run up and down in search of them. It becomes very agitated in the process and peace becomes and impossibility. The influence of the external world is absent during the dreamful state, accordingly the amount of pleasure is due to want of efferent desires in the mind or increased organs (for that matter here the desire is not afferent either). In the state of sleep, as the internal activities of the mind are substantially less, the amount of happiness (Static happiness) is proportionately increased." (1)
