The body: our alarm clock + 3 more

Baba
The body: our alarm clock

Namaskar,

Imagine a situation in which someone is doing something important in their office and they are severely pressed for time. If they suddenly feel hungry or need to go to the  restroom then a question arises: Should they stop working and tend to one’s bodily needs or suppress the urge until the work is completed.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The human body is a biological machine

Sadguru Baba says that the human body is a sophisticated and complex machine. Many processes are happening simultaneously inside the human body. It is very difficult to comprehend the exact working of the human body due to its sheer complexity. For proper functioning, the human body should get adequate support, such as air to breathe, water to drink, and provision to defecate toxic substances, to name a few.

Body's warnings: keep an eye

The chemistry of the body needs to be maintained, and so one must pay heed to the the demands of the body. Take the analogy of an indicator light on a car which is displaying the warning that the engine has become overheated. If the warning is ignored for a long time and one continues driving the car, then the engine may fail permanently.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ignoring signals can cause disease

The human mind is very powerful. Those who are mostly engaged in intellectual work often ignore their bodily needs, unlike the ones who are mostly involved in physical work. By ignoring the basic needs one puts their body under undue stress. Maybe occasionally ignoring one’s bodily needs may not be so dangerous, but such an approach continued over a duration can lead to serious diseases. Just as a machine becomes dysfunctional if its warning signals are continuously ignored, the human body can also succumb to disease if one does not pay heed to one’s basic physical needs.

The basic rule of yoga is to perform all one’s daily bodily duties like eating, sleeping, bathing, and defecating at the right time. One should never force oneself to change the schedule for the above daily activities as that can adversely affect their health.

Risk of long-term damage

If one’s body is strong then one may not immediately feel the adverse effects, but, internally, the body as well as the mind get affected. For example, if one is trying to ignore the pressure to urinate then one part of the mind gets distracted and one’s concentration gets divided. It is better to relieve such pressure. If one is hungry then, as an effect, one may get a headache or burning sensation in the stomach which again may affect the proper functioning of one’s mind.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Recipe for happy life

If one listens to one’s body’s signals then one will be able to live a long and healthy life. Rather than holding normal bodily functions, one should make a proper timetable and follow that. A train that can run smoothly on rails but if it is not maintained properly then it can derail. On derailment, the train can get stuck in a field or a ditch. In that case, a powerful crane has to be brought to put the train back on the track.

Thus, for one’s physical health and overall well-being, one should make a routine and follow it strictly. One should not do anything at arbitrary times. The body has its own biological clock, and by duly following it one can live a healthy life and can make progress. Not following a routine is an invitation for trouble.

The body is the framework for carrying out spiritual sadhana, but to do sadhana a healthy body is needed. If the body is healthy then only is spiritual progress possible. After death, the brain disintegrates but the mind remains. An Alzheimer patient’s brain begins degenerating during their lifetime but the mind is still fully functional. For such patients, the mind wants to work but the brain is not capable of helping. So there is a deep connection between body and mind.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

So in order to maintain a healthy body, one must be vigilant about listening to the signals of one’s body. If one ignores those signals, then serious diseases can develop which will disturb the mind so that one’s sadhana will be adversely affected.

In Him,
Bhakti

False alarms / wrong justifications

Note: In the context of not ignoring one’s bodily needs, there should not be any misunderstanding about following negative bodily or mental tendencies.

1. Some have malevolent vrttis, e.g. the urge to cause harm to someone. This can be misinterpreted by the person to be an urgent call from within. But malevolence does not qualify as among the natural signals of the body, and must not be heeded.

2. Those who suffer from lust and feel an urgent demand to satisfy that desire should understand that this is not fundamental in the same way as the need for food, water, and sleep. It is not to be included among the natural signals to which one should respond. The reason being that responding to it degenerates the mind and arouses and multiplies animalistic tendencies.

3. Physical addictions such as to cigarettes, alcohol, and other drugs are just that, physical addictions. They must give in to such addiction, rather such vices are to be shunned by goading the mind toward positive activities.

Biological machine

Sadguru Baba says, “Let me explain why the human body is a biological machine and goaded by propensities….There are ten indriyas [organs] – five jiṋánendriyas [sensory organs] and five karmendriyas [motor organs] – and one antahkarańa [internal faculty]. The sensory and motor organs are bahihkarańa [external organs]. Antahkarańa is directly associated with the body. It is one intrinsic portion of the mind itself. It is by dint of this portion that the mind feels the emptiness of the stomach, and thereby hunger. Once the stomach becomes empty, the mind starts searching for food, and this is expressed through the physical actions of the body. So there are two portions – antahkarańa and bahihkarańa. One consists of an intrinsic portion of the mind itself, and the other of the ten organs – five sensory organs and five motor organs.”
“The propensive propulsion comes from antahkarańa. The origin or source of the propulsion is antahkarańa. Antahkarańa is made of the conscious and subconscious portions of the mind – thinking, memory, etc., all belong to antahkarańa. Antahkarańa is doing these things. Now, whenever antahkarańa does something, the physical body is activated accordingly. The body is also transformed accordingly. Thus, this biological machine is goaded by propensive propulsion.” (1)

If I had known

PS Intro: The relationship between the bhakta and Parama Purusa is eternal - it has been going on since the very dawn of creation. However, the bhakta was not always aware of this truth. Ages and ages passed when the sadhaka did not realise his unique and intimate connection with Parama Purusa. So when any sadhaka does get initiated and starts doing strong sadhana and becomes linked with Parama Purusa and feels His divine love and becomes drenched in His bliss, then that sadhaka feels repentant for not developing his relationship with Parama Purusa sooner. This song expresses this very notion of repentance and wishful thinking. Because in this song the sadhaka is expressing the following directly to Parama Purusa:

'In the past I was not aware about my relation with You. So now, when I have been blessed to come in Your contact and feel in my heart that You are my nearest and dearest One, then I feel sad that why did I not call You before, in the past - long, long back. Because even when I was a non-margii then at that very time You were also with me. But I never looked towards You those days; I never called You back then. Why did I not do so? Why did I not recognise You back then? It would have been so blissful to have had Your proximity all these years, but instead so much time passed in vain.'

So this song expresses the feeling of repentance of each and every devotee who has become linked with Parama Purusa as they reflect back on their life before becoming a margii. They wonder, 'Why did I remain oblivious of You - it would have been blissful if I had deep intimacy with You sooner'.

“Tumi a'ma'r kata a'pan a'ge bujhi ni…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0241)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, You are very close to me; You are my Dearest One. Before, in the past, I was oblivious to this sacred truth: That You are my eternal Companion. All along, You were side by side with me - near me always and with me wherever I was, in all endeavours. But it was so unfortunate that I remained unaware of Your divine presence. I never thought that You loved me so much. My Dearmost, why did I not talk to You and have Your intimate closeness.

Baba, since time immemorial You have been with me in all my works - small or big, meaningful and meaningless. But unfortunately that time I did not look towards You. Baba, You were with me in my song, rhythm, and tune. There was never any occasion when You were not there right by my side. And the string of that viina was vibrating then and resonates even today. And now I can hear it. But it is so sad and painful how that time in the past I remained oblivious of You. I did not pay heed to the call of Your viina, so I did not hear it. My Dearmost, alas, it would have been so blissful if I had known that You love me so much, and You are with me always.

Divine Entity, You were with me on this journey of life, even when I was submerged in the deep Cimmerian darkness. And now that very memory remains awake in my mind always. It comes again and again in my mind that You are my close One, and You are always by my side, in my heart. But alas, for so long I remained oblivious and did not call You. I remained distant; on the point of bhakti I could not come close, although You were always accompanying me. Only now do I realize You are present and I can call and talk to You. Today I understand this truth; but, in the past I did not know. O’ Supreme One, why did my spiritual life not start at the very outset. I feel so repentant that I did not beckon You in those early days. Due to neglect, You went away, leaving me alone in isolation in an unknown place and distant land. That time, why did I not keep You in my heart and hold Your feet. How come I did not wipe away all my dilemmas and hold You in dhyana and make You mine. To this day I still wonder about this. It is so sad that time passed, and You remained distant. No doubt today we are close, yet I repent how my life would have been so blissful having Your proximity earlier. This pain I carry in my heart, O' my Dearmost…

Spirituality & suicide prevention

Due to lack of a higher goal, if even a small problem arises, people get frustrated and lose interest in life. Those without a spiritual goal lack higher values, and therefore get overwhelmed when they face any of life’s difficulties. For human welfare, the propagation of spirituality is extremely important. If one has a higher goal then they will never commit suicide, no matter the circumstances.

Baba's original guideline

Baba discusses this topic in His Hindi discourse: Kya' Dharma Vaeyas't'ika Jiivana ka' U'rdhva-Sam'vega Hae, athava' Sa'magrika Vishva ka' Tristariiya Mukti Sopa'na Hae? Subhasita Samgraha, Part 15, Chapter 02 (H) DMC 29 July 1980 Ranchi

Here is the English summary of Baba's original Hindi teaching:

Life becomes monotonous if one is merely engrossed in mundane thinking and worldly works all day long. When non-sadhakas, i.e. those not doing sadhana - reach old age, they say, "Now it is better to die." Even youths who do not do spiritual practices commit suicide when they suffer from feelings of despair etc. Why is this the case? According to applied psychology, I would say it is because they don't have any higher pursuits; hence, the lonely and desperate feelings of sheer monotony consume their mind.

Now, what is the way to prevent such monotony? The objective counterpart of the mind should have such an object which is infinite. Indeed, by coming in contact with such an infinite object of ideation, people will never harbour feelings of monotony - not in any case. That object [Parama Purusa] is ever new, newer, and newest. Parama Purusa is that Entity who is ever new, always new. Therefore, it is the duty of every person to do spiritual practices and prevent any feelings of monotony in life. For spiritual progress, certainly it is everyone’s bounden duty to do sadhana. Verily, by your sadhana you will be able to protect yourself from falling prey to any type of melancholia or depression. Preparing for & breaking fast + 3 more

Baba
Preparing for & breaking fast

Namaskar,

Fasting / upavása is one of the significant and important gifts which Baba has bestowed upon us for maintaining human health and leading a spiritual life. This letter discusses numerous aspects of the practice of fasting / upavása - including the all-important point and practical method of how to break fast. Here following are many of the topics:

Universal and Natural Law ~ Animal Existence vs Human Life ~ Operative principle / Prakrti's Perfect Remedy: Fasting / upavása ~ Animals follow Natural Law, Human Eat Mostly out of Greed ~ Fasting / upavása for Health: A Purification Process ~ AM's Approach to Fasting / upavása ~ Fasting / upavása and Longevity ~ Humans Know How to Break ~ System of Breaking ~ Wrong Breaking Invites Harm ~ Water Needed for Digestion & Whole Body System ~ Work of the Small and Large Intestine ~ Proper Cleaning Necessary ~ Use of Lemon Water ~ 'Rounds' for Breaking ~ Individual Needs ~ Gentle Process ~ Maintain Prama when Breaking ~ Warning and Guidelines ~ Stages of Cleaning ~ What and When to Eat ~ Taking Banana ~ Baba's Special Blessing ~ Baba's Complete System ~ Proper Interest and Care Needed ~ Optimal Health ~ Suggestions from Others ~ Healthy and Happy in All the Realms.

Humans abuse their freedom

Parama Purusa has created this world in a well-balanced way. And within this creation there is both animal existence and human life, with a unique difference separating the two. Animals are fully bound by natural law. They have no option but to strictly adhere to the rules of prakrti; whereas human beings have been given freedom or dominion to make choices and exercise their will, within a certain degree.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Yet the Operative principle / Prakrti itself has been devised in such a perfect way that animals always advance and benefit from following natural law. In that sense, animals are comparatively more fit and healthy than common human beings because animals are forced to follow Operative principle / Prakrti's ways, while humans have some scope to go against natural law, should they desire. And this whole equation, with regards to animal life and human life, is especially true with regards to food and fasting / upavása.

Fasting / upavása: a law of prakrti

For example, when an animal gets sick, in their natural way they refrain from taking food until they regain their health. Refraining from ingesting food - i.e. fasting - is the very tool by which animals heal themselves and recover from their sickness. So animals do not eat food for taste per se, but as a means of survival and recovery according to the dictates or laws of the cosmi operative principle / prakrti.

So Parama Purusa has created this beautiful universe in such a way that everything unfolds according to natural law. Within this, fasting / upavása is a special method for curing oneself if the body is not functioning properly.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Human food habits: improper & proper

Sometimes humans disobey natural law, and in this materialistic era especially, some persons eat excessively out of greed. When they see food, they desire to eat it,  whether it suits them or not.

Those human beings - who are sensitive and follow the codes of yogic life - develop an inner sense of when to take food and when not. When the body is sick then they do not like to eat food. And that is the natural system to cleanse the body, enhance its functioning and make it perfect and pure. For thousands of years yogis have been following this approach.

Through fasting / upavása, toxins and waste are removed; and the body is given opportunity to recover and ultimately reach a higher state of functioning and wellness.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Fasting / upavása in our Ananda Marga

In our Ananda Marga yogic style of living, all-knowing Baba has given the system of fasting (upava'sa) whereby He directs us to observe ekadashii as a fasting / upavása day. Some also fast on purnima and amavasya. In both cases, whether 2 or 4 times per month, fasting / upavása brings about a beneficial effect on the entire body, in numerous ways. Those who do not fast are deprived of the unique health benefits; their health breaks down, diseases crop up, and their health problems linger, and ultimately get multiplied. In the end, they have no choice but to surrender themselves to a local doctor and begin the process of taking medicine on a regular basis.

Parama Purusa Baba has given fasting / upavása as part of Sixteen Points and Baba has also said that by following 16 Points one will extend the length - and enhance the quality - of their life. So there is a vast difference between those who follow Sixteen Points and those who do not. Those strictly following points like fasting / upavása will get an extra 15, 20, or even 30 years of quality living. For optimal health fasting / upavása is highly important. As one becomes regular in following this system of fasting / upavása, the body becomes conditioned, so before the next ekadashii arrives one can internally feel that another fasting / upavása is needed.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Svarashastra, the science of breathing and breath control, is helpful on fasting / upavása days. Those who are new to fasting / upavása and struggling with it can resolve their problem by doing this. Start your fasting / upavása day, and when the feeling of hunger arises then lie down on your right side. That will make the left nostril dominant and the feeling of hunger will dissipate. And if the feeling of hunger arises again then again lie down on the right side. By this way, one can control the urge to eat and have a successful fasting / upavása day.

Differences in fasting / upavása: humans & animals

In their own ways, both animals and proper human beings fast. But some vast differences exist between the two.

(a) In general, animals fast when the body is sick, whereas humans fast during sickness, as well as on amavasya, purnima and ekadashii in order to cleanse the body. As a matter of regimen, a person should not eat when sick or when not hungry.

Here it should be noted that I have seen how certain animals do not eat on ekadashii such as the fish that were in the pond at Baba Quarters in Lake Gardens and the dog in Ananda Shila' MU. Those animals were very strict not to eat those days. And there are various cases of animals that felt the negative effects of the moon on ekadashii and amavasya. And those animals refrained from eating those days. This I have seen with my own eyes.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(b) Animals do not know how to properly break their fast, whereas humans have been given the technique.

And it is by breaking fast properly that the body is able to maximize the benefits of the fast. Unfortunately some are not aware how to break fast.

Here are more upcoming points

~ System of Breaking ~ Wrong Breaking Invites Harm ~ Water Needed for Digestion & Whole Body System ~ Work of the Small and Large Intestine ~ Proper Cleaning Necessary ~ Use of Lemon / Lime Water ~ 'Rounds' for Breaking ~ Individual Needs ~ Gentle Process ~ Maintain Prama when Breaking ~ Warning and Guidelines ~ Stages of Cleaning ~ What and When to Eat ~ Taking Banana ~ Baba's Special Blessing ~ Baba's Complete System ~ Proper Interest and Care Needed ~  Optimal Health ~ Suggestions from Others ~ Healthy and Happy in All the Realms.

Indeed, fasting / upavása is one special process for achieving and maintaining optimum health. As Ananda Margiis, we have all realised the various positive effects of fasting / upavása, such as ridding the body of toxins, increased longevity, and enhanced quality of life etc. Certainly then fasting / upavása is a unique purification process and one most significant aspect of this practice is the approach to breaking the fast.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How the body is at the end of the fast

By doing a 24 hour dry fast - i.e. without water - and going 32 hrs without food, the body obviously becomes dehydrated. Hence the body is in a very delicate and sensitive state. In that case, if one breaks the fast in an abrasive or hasty manner then not only will they be unable to derive the many benefits of the fast but it will create harm to the body.

Here is another key point: In actuality, the real fasting period starts 10 hours after one's last meal and culminates when one breaks their fast. And by this way every sadhaka can calculate their actual fasting period.

Preparing for fasting / upavása

If you are planning to fast the next day then eat a little less quantity for dinner / evening meal. If this approach is followed then cleaning will go more smoothly on breaking fast day.

Other preparations include:
1. Be sure to have 2 - 3 hours of time in order to complete the whole process.
2. Be sure to have a lemon or lime available for breaking fast.
3. Be sure to have salt available for breaking fast.
4. Be sure to have a few (2 - 3) ripe bananas available.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

A few points of awareness

Before getting into the specifics of breaking fast, it should be mentioned that one, two, or even three glasses of water is not nearly enough for the breaking process. In their naivety, some people might drink 1 - 2 glasses of water and then immediately start eating a variety of food etc, but that way of doing is off base and should never be done.

Rather on the morning of breaking fast the first thing is that the digestive system should be cleaned thoroughly - from top to bottom - with water. And when that has been done completely, then solid food can be taken, but not beforehand.

Breaking the fast itself - a "how to" process - 1

Note: Please read this entire step-by-step process in full (at least once) before you actually start breaking your fast.

1. Squeeze ¼ or ½ of a lemon or lime into a bowl (ceramic, wooden or glass or BPA-free plastic or anything - but not metal.) Note: This entire breaking process can be done without a lemon / lime if need be in an emergency.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(The size of the bowl should be at least 1 liter. Be sure that the individual cells of the lemon or lime are broken to maximize the juice. That will help bring more juice.)

2. Add 2 teaspoons (flat not heaping) of salt to the lemon / lime juice and mix.

3. Everyone has a different salt tolerance, and some people may be able to take as much as 3 teaspoons in the first round. In that case there will not be a second round with salt; one will just drink plain water for the second round as the entire breaking fast process can be done with just the 3 teaspoons of salt from the initial round.

4a. Special warning to heart patients: During this process, be sure not to drink more than ½ liter in one sitting and use less salt, approximately 1 teaspoon per round.

4b. Those with high blood pressure should be careful about the use of salt; for those in proper health, kindly know that this salt solution will be eliminated from the body in the next hour or two, so there will not be much of a lingering effect of all this sodium-chloride.

5. Begin to drink the lemon salt water mixture, then do some kaoshikii, and continue drinking. Then do some kaoshikii, and then drink again. Then do some kaoshikii, and then drink again - until you have finished that initial round of salt water. Note: The drinking should not be done in one gulp per se, but in a series of comfortable sips and swallows over the course of a five minutes or less, without bloating the stomach.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Breaking the fast itself - a "how to" process - 2

6. After finishing this initial round of salty lemon water, walk around for a few minutes - either in the fresh air or indoors. Do not remain in a seated position. Either stand up or walk.

7. You may gently stretch the upper body by raising the arms on the inhale and then exhaling and gently bending to the side. And repeat by bending to the opposite direction. This gently helps to hasten the cleansing process. If you wish and it is comfortable you can bend forward and back a little bit, but do not go extreme.

Do not sit down and remain still as that will severely hinder the process of clearing. Do not create pressure when you bend forward and back as the belly is full of water.

8a. If you have done #3 then 8b is not needed. In that case, 20 minutes after finishing your first round, just drink 1 liter of warm water without any salt.

8b. After reading point #3, as soon as you feel ready, drink the next round of lemon salt water: ¼ or ½ lemon or lime with 2 flat teaspoons of salt, mix, then add 1 liter of warm water.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(Note: It is important not to wait too long between rounds. As soon as the stomach feels comfortable one should again drink. Do not wait more than 10 minutes or so –  if you can start drinking the next round before then that is fine.)

9. After #8a / 8b, be sure to walk around and bend the torso side to side – or a little front to back. Remember, do not sit down or remain still as that will severely hinder the process of clearing. This 15 - 30 minute period is very important; keep moving.

10. If you do not have a strong urge to go to the bathroom immediately, continue to walk and drink warm water with a lesser amount of salt, just a sprinkling. Lemon is not needed. (1 or 2 liters can be taken.)

11. By this process of drinking and walking, a strong urge will come to go to the toilet-- within 1/2 hour to one hour. If you ate too much on the eve of fasting / upavása (too much normal food and or "rich" (high protein and fat) then it may take longer.

If you followed up to now and still not breaking

Note: If the salt water mixture was misdirected to the urethra instead of cleansing the colon, it means that not a sufficient amount of salt was used or you ate too much rich food the night before fasting / upavása. But really for most people 2 teaspoons (max of 3 teaspoons) of salt per liter of water for the first two rounds should work fine. One should not consume more salt. Taking more salt may result in the release of important stomach enzymes and bacteria - for more about this see the warning after point #16.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

12. Initially, a very strong smelling brown waste matter will be released from the colon. Thereafter, more and more solids and liquids will be released via the rectum. This will also be brown at the beginning. But do not worry, thinking you have been stricken with a severe case of diarrhea. This is the initial stage of cleaning out the digestive tract.

13. Once this process of clearing the digestive tract has begun, switch over from drinking a lightly salted mixture and begin taking pure fresh water without any salt. This fresh water will help hydrate the body and aid in the cleansing process. Drinking 1 or 2 liters is quite helpful – both for clearing and re-hydrating.

14. In this process of cleansing one might visit the toilet between 3 - 5 times, or more. Or you may go less frequently but sit for longer periods. Do not suppress the urge, when the impulse comes go straight to the toilet.

15. The waste material will turn from brown and somewhat solid to yellowish and liquidy until finally being a completely clear liquid. Once completely clear liquid comes, be assured the entire digestive tract is clean - including the intestines, colon, and stomach etc.

16. By this entire process of cleansing a very light and healthy feeling will consume the body. One will feel very happy, fresh, and energetic.

Warning: If in the process of clearing, a white or yellowish foam (lots of bubbles piling up) is released from the rectum then it means too much salt has been taken. The foam is actually the mucous membrane / stomach lining that contains all kinds of positive bacteria that should remain in the gut. So if you have reached this point of producing foam, then you have taken too much salt and you will be overcome with extreme weakness.

17. Within ten to fifteen minutes a slight feeling of hunger will come. At that point, you should eat 1 - 2 very ripe bananas that have brown spots on the outside - or 3 if they are very small. The bananas should be soft and ripe with brown spots - not green and hard. Chew them slowly and thoroughly to generate and mix with the saliva. Be sure to only eat ⅙ full of the belly.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

18. After taking a few bananas - be careful not to overeat or fill the stomach - wait until the onset of a strong feeling of thirst. Then drink a little bit of water, and when a strong feeling of thirst returns, drink a little more water. This will help in digesting the bananas.

19. After stronger hunger comes, take ½ belly of easily digestible food such as cooked rice etc. Here are a few other options as well.

(a) If one chooses to take fruit then only eat fruit - not grain or vegetables - and avoid taking citrus fruit.

(b) If one chooses hydrated rice and vegetables (kichuri) do not mix fruit with that rice dish.

(c) Avoid heavily spiced, oily food, or processed food. Avoid eating too much dry food like bread, or acidic food like pasta. Aim for more simple food: like soups and kichuri.

(d) Later on in the day, after your second round of food is digested, then it is ok to take some citrus fruit if you wish.

20. Throughout the day, care should be taken to continue to drink plenty of fresh water in small amounts, but not at the same time as eating. This will help ensure the solid food gets digested properly and it will also keep the body hydrated.

Taking proper care

One should also keep in mind that breaking fast is a highly individualized thing. And one should be gentle and listen to one's own body when undergoing this entire process.

So altogether, this is one very important practice and a delicate subject; it needs personal interest and proper care to see what is good and working well for you.

Also beware, if on non-fasting / upavása days you are not feeling hungry, then do not eat until the feeling of hunger arises. Eating when not hungry will ruin the system.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Great significance of fasting / upavása

Parama Purusa Baba has included upava'sa (fasting) as its own exclusive point in Sixteen Points.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "Observe fast as prescribed." (1)

And in His supreme 'Secrets for a Long Life', Baba lists upava'sa (fasting) as its own entry.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "upava'sa (fasting) at Intervals." (2)

And furthermore in Yogic Treatment pointedly remarks how upava'sa (fasting) helps restore the body to a balanced and natural condition.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "During upava'sa (fasting) the body's organs get a good rest, and the healing process is more rapid." (3)

Upavása is more than just fasting

Here below Baba colorfully describes how we are to spend our fasting / upavása days.

Ananda Marga ideology says"'Upa' means proximity. And va'sa means to live, to reside. So the upava'sa word means to live near the Lord.  In these days of fasting, what the aspirants are to do? Mentally they should live near their Lord. On all other days there remains a balance between external objective adjustment, and subjective approach. An adjustment between objective adjustment and subjective approach. But on these fasting, or upava'sa, the aspirant remains more in proximity to the Lord than in other mundane duties. That's why these days are known as "upava'sa". The word 'fasting' doesn't carry the proper sense or the proper spirit of the term 'upava'sa'. To go without food, for this the proper word is anasan. 'An' means not, 'asan' means eating. And not upava'sa. So these ekadashii, amava'sya, and purnima they are, upava'sa. Do you follow?" (4)

And Sadguru Baba's next guideline further details how fasting / upavása days are perfect for an enhanced spiritual routine.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "These fixed [fasting] days are called upavása since during these days people keeping their minds engaged in spiritual matters 'live closer' to God, and any possibility of mental degradation is averted: their humanity is not endangered by the lengthening shadows of annihilation." (5)

By all this we can understand that on upavása days one can enjoy heightened spiritual awareness and thus deepen their devotional link with Parama Purusa - Baba.

In Ananda Marga, sometimes we may use the term 'fasting', but in reality one means upavása. It is just that due to the lack of a proper English term that we may say 'fasting'.

Conclusion

The Ananda Marga system of fasting / upavása is a central practice for every sadhaka and the benefits reflect in all realms of life: physical, psychic, and spiritual. So every Ananda Margii should be keen to fast on the noted days and break fast in the aforesaid manner.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Prabhu Deva

I can never forget how in one general darshan, Parama Purusa Baba has given the guideline that although most animals know how to fast, only humans know how to break their fast properly. Those not aware about this technique should be taught at the earliest.

Fasting / upavása on planet earth & beyond

We know that our Ananda Marga system of fasting / upavása is based upon the cycle or phases of the moon. Yet Baba also guides us that when human beings move to other planets then accordingly the system of fasting / upavása will be based on that planetary system etc.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "On and around the times of new and full moon, one may observe that the gaseous and aqueous factors in the body rise up into the head and chest, creating an uncomfortable feeling. Therefore, if a person does not take food at these times, these factors will be drawn down from the higher portions of the body to the lower portions, thereby alleviating the uncomfortable feeling." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "You should not depend on food too much. This is why I have prescribed fasting on four days a month for some people and two days a month for others, and personally I have proved by fasting for five years and ... months at a stretch that if people try, they can remain without food. If one's dependence on food decreases, one will gain more freedom in a particular aspect of life." (7)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “So upavása is a necessity in the eleventh moon, púrńimá (that is, full moon), and the new moon. In Ánanda Márga, I didn’t prescribe these four days’ upavása for grhiis—that is, non-wholetimers, non-avadhútas; they are to fast only two days, two eleventh moons. And for workers, avadhútas, they are to fast how many days? Four days. Because they will have to engage themselves more in higher works, in the intellectual and spiritual [realms]. That’s why they should fast four times in a month—and others twice. But, if others so desire, they may fast four times—I won’t say anything—but it is not compulsory.” (8)

Due to Your absence

"Toma'ke ja'y na' bhola'..." (Prabhat Samgiita #2347)

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, I can’t forget You. Always I am calling and thinking about You, yet You are not giving me Your darshan or satiating my heart's desire by coming to me. You have bound me in Your divine attraction - love. When I long for You and the feeling of melancholy is unbearable then my heart begins to ache. In that yearning and pain, the feeling comes in my mind that it is best just to forget You.

Because then at least the agony which is lingering due to Your absence will dissipate and vanish. But I can’t forget You; the more I think that I should forget You, then my ardent desire for You only intensifies and my heart becomes even more restless. Baba, I crave Your proximity...

Inner spirit of dharmacakra mantra

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Just see the case of air, light, water, respirations and everything. The need for these things is the same for all individuals. There have been no differentiations. These differentiations that we see in society are creations of vested interests, creations of depraved persons, of degenerated, immoral people. So you should not support these actional defects of immoral persons. You should follow the divine vibrational system, that is, you must not try to find any differentiations among individuals. “Devábhágaḿ yathápúrve saḿjánáná upásate.” It is the wont of divine expressions that there be no differentiations, no class of exploiters and exploited. That is, this wont of not creating any differentiations was not only their duty, it was their upásaná, the desideratum of their existential march.”
Ananda Marga ideology ways, “Samáni va ákuti”. When everything cometh from the same source, from the same Progenitor, and when finally everything goeth back to the same desideratum, there must be the same aspirations, the same longing, in the heart of each and every individual. But due to the depraving actions of immoral people, those exploited, those downtrodden people are forced to forget their goal. They are drifted away from the desideratum of their life. This should not be done. Everybody should get the chance to develop their natural longings for Him.” (1)

For some long life is bad + 4 more

Baba
For some long life is bad

Namaskar,

Around the globe it is commonly held that a successful life is a long life. People generally equate longevity of life with success. In Ananda Marga our view is quite different: Longevity in and of itself is not the main factor or criteria of a successful life. Baba guides us that human life must be filled with great works and noble deeds - in a phrase, it must be an actional representation of a high ideal. Side by side, Baba warns us not to live a passive life - devoid of any activity. Baba opposes such a static approach.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Mere survival is not enough; what is important is to live a dignified life. The excellence of human life lies in action; it is through action that human beings survive. They should aspire to live long while performing noble deeds; it is futile to live just like an earthworm. Indeed, each and every human being should vow, 'I do not know how long I will survive; but as long as I exist I will live a glorious life, not an ignominious existence like that of an earthworm'..." (1)

According to Baba, living a long life devoid of doing any good deeds is a waste of human existence - rather that is akin to living like an earthworm. As human beings, our duty is to lead a bustling life: One that is filled with high minded actions and guided by a benevolent intellect.

Modernity has brought longevity, not quality

These days in this modern era with the advancement of science, many people are living much longer lives in comparison to the past - but unfortunately with regards to the quality of their existence, that has decreased dramatically. Although many are reaching the century mark and living more than 100 years, it is quite obvious that many are just existing like animals: Only eating, drinking, and sleeping etc, nothing more.

That is why according to Baba's dharmic stand, in this modern era most are just living the passive & degenerated life of an earthworm. Their lives are an unfortunate display because they fail to utilise their human life for something great - for something noble. So although people's longevity has increased, we cannot call their life successful.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The forgotten equation: samskara theory

People often fail to realise that they will have to undergo all the reactions of their actions. In which case living a long life filled with negative deeds  of doing harm to others invites serious problems - serious repercussions. It is a liability because people will have to suffer the reactions of their bad actions.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If some bad actions are committed, naturally their consequences also must be undergone." (2)

Per samskara theory, individuals must undergo the negative reactions of their actions. So when human beings are living long lives but failing to do good works and instead filling their existence with mundane or even degrading activities and harming others, then their long life amounts to nothing but a huge pile of negative samskaras. That is the end result of their long life. In which case who can term that as a successful existence. Rather it is a disaster as they have accumulated so much sin and negative samskaras leading to suffering and pain for themselves in the future. They are sure to revert back on the path of negative pratisaincara. Whereas if they had died sooner they would have accumulated fewer negative samskaras. But certainly this is opposite in the case of sadhakas.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba's warning: don't do asatkarma

That is why Baba vehemently warns us about doing negative works - bad actions.

    Ya'vanna ks'iiyate karma

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The bondage of asatkarma [bad actions] is iron...One has to refrain from bad actions so that the chains of iron might not be forged." (3)

So if one does any bad action then there is no escape. Immediately they have bound themselves up in iron chains - that is Baba's stern warning. The only answer then is to refrain from doing misdeeds - goaded by animalistic desires and devilish tendencies. And instead one should live the life of a spiritual warrior, ever ensconced in noble works.

How incurring bigger load of negative samskaras

All in all in this modern era human life has tragically became something negative because people involve themselves in degenerated activities thereby incurring a load of negative samskaras. This we can see happening all around us in the general society. The root problem is that most people do not utilise their life for a greater cause. This happens because of a lack of a spiritual way of living. Instead they just get caught up in the negative flow of the materialistic society.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So our duty is to form a spiritual based society so that common human beings can utilise their life from birth to death. We have to help people discover their innate human tendency: To live a life always in search of divine bliss.

2-5: Tasminnupalabdhe parama' trs'n'a'nivrttih

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "There is in the living being a thirst for limitlessness..." (4)

Indeed by Baba's grace everyone has the inborn desire to achieve immortality - to lead a spiritual existence and attain Him. So the best thing is to utilise this human life for real fulfillment, otherwise one's life is like the slothy existence of a slimy earthworm. Overall then, for positive, spiritually-minded people a longer life is a boon. But for negative people it is a curse. Longevity of life is only something beneficial if that life is utilised in a proper way, otherwise that longevity of life is nothing but a curse.

His divine liila is blissful for bhaktas

This entire cycle of life is the divine liila of Parama Purusa. A baby is born and blooms up to its full development and then gradually it shrinks in its old age. This is the divine play of “Hari & Hara”. That is why this world is called jagat – because everything is mobile. Everything is changing; nothing is stationary. Those who have come will one day go. Those who have gone, they have gone in order to return again. This infinite liila of Parama Purusa is going on from beginninglessness up to eternity. In reality, this liila is miserable for jinanis; but for bhaktas it is blissful. In this cosmic liila everyone has their own particular role to play. And those who remember that they are part of a divine drama, they enjoy; and those who forget, they cry. But in the real sense everything is blissful because everyone is dancing around Parama Purusa.

"Kalya'n'amastu-- May you be blessed"

Baba has graciously showered His divine blessing on us by bringing us onto the path of spirituality- thus making our lives successful.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "You are all sa'dhakas, you are all spiritual aspirants...I know certainly you will be successful...Kalya'n'amastu-- May you be blessed." (5)

Namaskar,
In Him,
Darpaharii

Baba's special secret for a long life

Here Baba graciously gives us a special guideline for living a long, successful life - one that is filled with peace and tranquility.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Spiritual practice makes the mind calm and quiet, and maintains the nerves in a state of equipoise; and thus spiritual practice increases longevity." (6)

The reactions of all actions must be experienced - so be careful

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Even after crores of kalpas [aeons] the reactions of actions are not exhausted. This continues to be so as long as the reactions have not been experienced.” How will the reactions of the actions be exhausted? Karmabhogena kśiiyate – “When the reactions are experienced, then only are they exhausted.” Avashyameva bhoktavyam' krtam' karmashubhá shubham – “one has performed good actions, so their fruits are to be enjoyed; so also is it with bad actions.” Hence one has to be cautious while performing actions. After that, repentance will fetch no benefit." (7)

Both good and bad actions cause a reaction

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Human beings undergo reactions according to the nature of their original actions. If someone harms a sick person, a saint, a person who has taken shelter with someone, or a honest person, he or she will immediately undergo a reaction of the same intensity. This is because sick, infirm and saintly people never obstruct the original actions of wrongdoers. Whatever the original actions of a person may be, good or bad, reactive momenta are bound to be created. Until all these potential reactions are expressed, liberation or salvation is impossible. Yávanna ksiiyata karma shubhaiṋcáshubhameva ca, Távanna jáyate mokśonrám kalpashataerapi. Yathá laohamayaeh páshaeh páshaeh svarńamayaerapi Tathábaddho bhavejjiivo karmábhishcá shubhae shubhaeh. “Until all the reactions of actions, good or bad, are exhausted a person cannot attain salvation in hundreds of lives. Just as people bound by golden or iron chains feel the pains of bondage, similarly people undergoing good or bad reactions will have to accept them.”" (8)

What creates the biggest reaction

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Avashyameva bhoktavyam' krtam' karmashubhá shubham. Now the question arises whether the reactions will be just [equal] to the actions, or less, or more. Equal and opposite reaction is [the rule], but then, whether the enjoyment of the reaction of actions is purely psychic or physico-psychic is to be seen. Where the action is purely mental, the reaction will be just [equal] to that. But if the action is physico-psychic, the question is, what will be the reaction? Still one thing is there, that if the mind is not affected by the physico-psychic action, nothing happens. But [usually] when the reaction is physico-psychic, it has more effect than the action performed."
"If it is purely psychic, the reaction will be just equal to it. [But] the reaction of the physico-psychic action does not affect the mind cent per cent. A person enjoys [psychic] reactions just [equal] to the actions performed. If there be some quantity of the reaction of physico-psychic action [that affects the body], in that case, the reaction will be much more than the action performed. The mind will be affected just according to the psychic action – that is the case with psychic actions. [But] if the action is physico-psychic, some of the reactions [affect] the mind, some [do] not. That which affects the mind is a psychic reaction, that which does not is physical. Among these reactions, the one that is in the pure physical sphere does not affect the mind. The pure psychic coupled with the [physical] of a physico-psychic reaction add up to produce a greater reaction. So the quantity of reaction in case of a physico-psychic action becomes much greater. Hence one should be careful." (9)

Three processes for attaining freedom

Ananda Marga ideology states, "There are three processes for attaining freedom from the bondage of action: (1) relinquishing any desire for the fruits of action, or Phalákám'kśá Tyága, (2) Abandoning the vanity of performing an act, or Kartrtvábhimána Tyága, and (3) surrendering all actions unto Brahma. All of these have to be followed in the individual life, but it must be kept in mind that they all have to be strictly observed. To be more explicit, these rules are the different aspects of one and the same process." (10)

How people are reborn to experience reaction

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Original action begets a certain reaction, and simultaneously brings one within the bondage of actions. Unless those bondages are broken, the microcosms will have to keep moving in a cycle of action and reaction – they will have to be reborn again and again on this earth." (11)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "There is no escape even if one performs a good action. One has to return again and again to this earth in order to reap the auspicious consequences of such actions. The idea that the disembodied mind experiences the auspicious consequences of its good actions is indeed a fantasy. This fantasy world is called heaven. It means that if one has performed a good action, then one will reap the consequences of that auspicious action after death. But the mind can experience its good consequences, if and only if, it has a body. One experiences joy and agony, pleasure and pain only if one has a brain, nerve cells and nerve fibres. If there is no physical body, how can there be any experience? So the thought of experiencing that pleasure in heaven is nothing but sheer fantasy. There is no logic behind it. That is why, in Ánanda Sútram, it is said, Na svargo na rasátala [“There is neither heaven nor hell”]. Where is the question of pleasure and pain in the absence of the physical body! So the fantasy of heaven is completely erroneous. Yes, one has to come to this world again in order to experience pleasure and pain. You have to come to the world again so that the sam'skáras of the past attain fruition. It is correct, because one has to perform actions in order to restore the mind to its normal state from the distortions (vikrti) caused by previous actions.” (12)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Unless one undergoes the requitals of one's mental reactive momenta – good requitals to good actions, bad requitals to bad actions – one cannot attain liberation.” Avashyameva bhoktavyam' krtam' karma shubháshubham – “whether an action is good or bad, the reaction must be experienced.” (13)

Sadhana is only way to escape noose of samskaras

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Until the actions, whether good or bad are annihilated, human beings cannot attain salvation or Mokśa. Can the gold chain be looser and less torturing than the iron chain to someone in bondage? Similarly, the bondage of bad actions is exactly as tight as the bondage of good actions."

    Nábhuktam' kśiiyate karma kalpakot́ishataerapi
    Avashyameva bhoktavyam' krtam' karma shubháshubham

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Therefore, for salvation or emancipation, it is necessary to be liberated from the bondage of Sam'skáras. The question is, how to attain salvation? When it is essential to act for maintaining one's existence, how is it possible to avoid the cycle of action and reaction?"

"It is known from philosophic propositions that the attainment of Mukti (liberation) or Mokśa (salvation) is possible only through spiritual practices or sádhaná. It therefore follows that there is certainly some means to attain liberation from sam'skáras." (14)

One should not do to be rewarded
do for the welfare of society

Ananda Marga ideology states, "One should undergo penance for others' welfare, for the well-being of the world; and the good that the world enjoys due to one's sacrifice is the reward. One should not expect any reward greater than this. The good result of a good action is the reward of that action. Similarly the bad result of a bad deed is the negative price of that action. The ancient sages used to practice penance by sitting near a firepit with their legs up and their hands down. What value does this type of penance have? Not much. To continue to perform penance like this is certainly not the highest fulfilment of life. Human beings have come onto this earth to do something good, some thing which will be of some benefit for the society for at least some period of time, if not forever." (15)

Stages of human life

Here following are the Sanskrit terms demarcating the various stages of human life. Accompanying them are corollary English terms. However since the English language does not formally divide human life in the exact systematic way as in Sanskrit, then everyone should give their further suggestions for how to best express the English counterpart.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba has formed these categories of life based upon changes that come as a result of changes in: age, psychological outlook, physical & psychic development, etc.

Ananda Marga Laghu Nirukta says, "Human life is composed various stages. And the collection of all the stages encompasses the entire human life. And just as human beings have these ten stages, similarly the life of each and every living being is composed of these ten stages. So depending upon the type of living being and environmental conditions such as climate and temperature etc, the duration of each of these stages varies, either increasing or decreasing. Following are the stages of life for a human being living in a tropical country."

“1) Ma'trgarbha: anuma'nika 10 ma's (Mother's Womb; approx 10 months)”

“2) Shaeshav: 0 to 5 (Infancy)”

“3) Balyaka'l: 5 to 14 (Childhood)”

“4) Kaeshora: 14 to 16 (Youth)”

“5) Paogan'd'a: 16 to 18 (Teenage / Adolescence)”

“6) Yauban: 18 to 39 (Early adult life)”

“7) Praor'hatva: 39 to 50 (Middle age)”

“8) Ba'rdhakya: 50 to 72 (Older adult life / senior citizen)”

“9) Jara': 72 to 100 (Elderly)”

“10) Atharva: 100 + (Centenarian)” (16)

Ma'trgarbha (Stage 1): In Varna Vicitra part 1, Baba comments that the duration of this first stage is ideally 10 months & 10 days. That is how long the fetus remains inside the womb, in the best of circumstances. If however, the fetus is born before this time, then the newborn will not be properly mature. In that case its physical and mental development has not occurred up to the optimal degree. This stands as yet another proof how human life begins in the mother's womb and therefore the act of abortion is not accepted in A'nanda Ma'rga.

Balyaka'l (Stage 3): Due to the excess intake of protein and fat and due to chemicals in the food, the age of puberty in so-called developed countries is rapidly decreasing. Now some young girls reach puberty at the tender age of 8 and some boys begin puberty at the age of 9. The extremely early onset of adolescence is the result of terrible imbalances in lifestyle and ultimately this creates serious problems in the society. Because suddenly 10 year old girls are getting pregnant and producing their own babies, yet they themselves are still young children and completely unable to take care of their offspring. This is the tragedy unfolding in various so-called developed countries.

Jara' (Stage 9): This means those whose bodies has begun shrinking.

Atharva (Stage 10): This means those who are almost immobile.

Purview of Your mind

"Moder dhará rúpe peyeche, tomár rúper sáje..." (Prabhat Samgiita #0324)

Note: Only those bhaktas who feel a devotional vibration in their heart can understand this song in the depths of their core.

Purport:

My Supreme Entity, this world has become beautiful because of Your infinite charm. That is why I behold You everywhere - in all Your variations. When I look at any expression then I see that You are there. You are manifesting Yourself in that form. Parama Purusa, You are presenting Your grandeur in the rupa of all these entities - animate and inanimate. You are One but Your disseminations are many. You show Yourself in innumerable shapes. You are hiding within Your creation.

Divine One, You are present everywhere - in all the flows. Nothing is outside Your mental arena; everything is within the purview of Your mind. That is why nothing is ever lost. Baba, I am in Your domain and I do according to Your desire. This entire universe is in Your mental vision and I am one part of that, working according to Your wish. Because all is Your thought projection.

Baba, You are present in each mental conception. Whatever human beings think is known to You since You are the Witnessing Entity of that very psychic process. You are extremely vast: all are encapsulated within You. You are so small and present in everyone's mental arena. You are more tiny than the most miniscule and more grand than the biggest. Even by mistake I do not think that besides You anything else exists. You are the totality.

Prabhu, I always think that You are the quintessence, it is Your grace...

~ Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #0324 ~

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Neohumanism includes within its scope not only human beings and animate creatures, such as plants and animals, but all inanimate entities as well, for the scope of Neohumanism extends down to the smallest particles of sub-atomic matter...Why should the love and affection of developed human minds be restricted to human beings only? Why should it not include all living beings, including plant life? This is the new explanation of humanism - neohumanism - for within neohumanism the entire animate world is included...And that golden day is sure to come when that perfect stage of structure, that is, unit existence in the intra-atomic world, will be reached, when human intuition will realize that the essence in the sub-atomic world is pure Consciousness." (1)

Note: Materialists think that everything comes from matter while Ananda Marga philosophy states that everything comes from Brahma. This then is the fundamental difference between the static world view of materialism and our spiritual outlook. Needless to say, our spiritual perspective changes the whole view of this universe as well as our relation with it. Materialists think that the world is for their self-satisfaction only whereas in Ananda Marga we think that we have come to this world to serve others since all are the expression of Parama Purusa.

More about Prabhat Samgiita #0324: This is a neo-humanistic song given on 10 March 1983. This same theme was evident in the RU address and DMC discourse of 28 and 29 May, respectively. In both those discourses, this same type of idea was given but in greater detail. In that RU address, the idea was that everything is the expression of Parama Purusa, and that Parama Purusa is expressing Himself throughout this manifested universe.

Why psychic ailments common

In this modern age, scientific development has made significant progress; in comparison, human psychic and spiritual growth has lagged far behind. In result, psychic problems and mental tension have multiplied in a geometrical progression. The final outcome is that nerve, brain, and heart diseases have become quite common; and anxiety, nervousness, and insanity are widespread in the society. The remedy for this has been given in our Ananda Marga ideology:

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "While doing work one should ideate, 'It is the work of Parama Purusa; it is not mine. I am doing His work to please Him'. By following this approach mental tension, nervousness, and psychic diseases will never arise. And also samskaras will not be formed." (1)
