Ants & premature death?

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “Even if an ant dies a premature death, it is bound to jeopardize the balance of the entire universe. ” (1)
 
The entire creation, including human beings, everyone and everything, is in the mind of Parama Purusa. Although human beings are His mental creation, He has additionally given them a limited degree of freedom. In this regard, their situation is like that of a caged bird. The bird cannot fly away, but it is free to walk or fly around the large enclosure. If the bird wants to sit quietly or walk around or fly it can do that. The condition of a human is like that of a bird living in a large cage.

Whatever an animal does, Parama Purusa is responsible because those animals do not have free will. The Cosmic Mind is responsible. Whereas, whatever humans do, they are responsible for their actions. But, overall, without His wish human beings cannot do anything.

• Humans do not take birth by their own volition, nor do human beings have any control regarding their death. On this point, they are bound, i.e. they have to die one day, against their wish. All this is controlled by Prakrti, and Prakrti is controlled by Parama Purusa. Everything happens according to the wish of Parama Purusa.

• Human beings have some freedom within a particular domain; beyond that boundary they cannot go. But whatever limited degree of freedom Parama Purusa has given human beings, that freedom is also granted and controlled by Parama Purusa. The reason being, while on the long journey of saincara and pratisaincara, gradually they reach the stage where they get their first human life. And that was His wish. If He had not desired it so, none of this would have happened. So the existence of human beings is His wish. Granting humans domain freedom and supplying them energy to act is also His wish. If a human does something bad, then surely that individual will be punished. And if he does good, he will be rewarded. But overall, this entire panorama of creation is controlled by Parama Purusa. So on the macroscale, Parama Purusa is doing everything.

So that ant and human beings are both in His mental arena. And whatever He thinks, both will do accordingly. There is no question of prematurely dying etc because everything is based on His thinking.

Why an ant cannot die prematurely

This vast creation is the thought projection of the Supreme Entity, God. Everything that we see and do not see of this expressed universe - the galaxies, stars, etc and the entire creation - exists because the Cosmic Entity is thinking in that way.
 
To make this more clear, you can imagine that if you close your eyes and start thinking about one elephant walking in the woods, that elephant is in your mind. It is your mental creation. As long as you think about that elephant, it will exist; and, when you stop thinking about it, it will vanish from your mind.

In the case of the ant, that ant is in the mind of Parama Purusa. Parama Purusa is thinking about that ant. As long as He thinks about it, that ant will exist. The ant’s life will progress according to how Parama Purusa thinks about that ant. So it is up to His will. Whether Parama Purusa wants to keep that ant on this earth or withdraw that ant - it is His will. The point being that in this entire creation everything is dependent upon His wish, His mental projection, and His thought. 
 
There is no question of prematurely dying etc because everything is based on His thinking. That is why an ant cannot die prematurely.

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Devotees say that fate is simply the collection of unrequited saḿskáras. A person who performs an action has to undergo the reaction to that action. If his body is old, the reaction of that action may not be expressed in this lifetime. Only when the same person is reborn will his unserved saḿskáras be expressed. He cannot remember the action of his previous life because he has acquired a new brain. So he takes the expression of those saḿskaras to be his fate. In fact they are not his fate – they are merely the reactions of his previous actions of his previous life. The philosophers contend that astrologers are able to predict people’s future by preparing their horoscopes. They may be correct, for in this universe everything follows a particular rhythm. Special guideline for improving sadhana

Here is the English summary of Baba’s below Hindi teaching.

After involving in mundane works one is generally plunged in worldly thoughts. So then if one sits in sadhana, in the mind you will think that 'Tomorrow I will go to Arariya town. Indeed I have to go in the morning. I will have to catch the first bus'. You will sit in  sadhana and go on thinking like this. In this situation what should you do? Before sitting for sadhana you should do kiirtan-- either 2 min, or 5 min, or 10 min. So first one should do kiirtan. Because by doing kiirtan the mind will get elevated. After that immediately one should sit in sadhana. Then you will see that there will not be any worldly thoughts. Then sadhana will be proper...Do not worry you have learned sadhana and I am always ready to help and serve you.

Note: Every sincere Ananda Margii wants to do sadhana. Yet most of the time this aforesaid problem occurs. And our Guru understands this. That is why He has graciously given such a beautiful solution-- as mentioned above. I think many may be following His divine guideline; and for those who are not, they should do so from now onwards, i.e. sing kiirtan before doing sadhana.

Analogy of demon

Now let’s take the example of a demon. Prakrti has provided the demon energy with the permission of Parama Purusa. And that demon has the free will to misuse or use that energy. Prakrti has made the system that if anyone misuses their energy they will get punished. So if the demon kills an innocent person, the demon will be punished. At the same time, Parama Purusa has also granted free will and created the system of reward and punishment.

So when we say that without His grace or desire a blade of grass cannot move, that is true in the macro sense. But that same Parama Purusa has granted unit beings the freedom to act. That is why when anyone does any harm to others, the doer of that harm undergoes punishment as well. So no one can blame that, “Parama Purusa is responsible, and He [Parama Purusa] is directly killing others with the demon’s hand.”

Free will, reward, & punishment

The contrast of happy and horrifying and joy and sorrow is what makes films captivating. And that is keenly related with why Parama Purusa has designed the cosmos in this way?

Parama Purusa has granted free will and made this system of reward and punishment to open the door for human beings to one day become one with God - if they so choose. If He hadn’t created this system of free will and reward and punishment then everyone would get moksa as a matter of course, just as every created being makes it up to first human life automatically, without any effort. So if all got moksa automatically, this world would not be so colourful. To make this world interesting, Parama Purusa has granted free will and with it, the system of reward and punishment governed by prakrti. By this way, the entire universe runs.

Think about it in this manner. Suppose you are the director of a movie. To make your film interesting, you will create a villain to provide an antithesis to the hero, otherwise your film will be monotonous and branded as a flop. It is the contrast between good and bad that makes films dynamic and captivating. And that is the aim of the movie director. That is also the reason why this universe has been created by Parama Purusa in this way: To make it interesting.

Conclusion

When anyone does any harm to others, the doer of harm undergoes punishment. So no one can blame that, “Parama Purusa is responsible for the sin committed by human beings.”

Prakrti is blind force: burns child’s hand

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “You know, the Universe, Parama Puruśa, the Supreme Cognition, functions with the help of the Supreme Operative Principle [prakrti]. The Operative Principle [prakrti] is actually a blind force, it cannot do anything without the help of Consciousness, without the help of the Cognitive Faculty. Electricity is a crude blind force, but if helped or utilized by the human brain, the human consciousness, it will render so many services. But without the help of human brain, it may have its destructive role. So, these blind forces cannot do anything concrete without the help of consciousness. Similarly in this universe, in the universal sphere, there is the Cosmic Cognition, we say Parama Puruśa, the Cosmic Cognitive Faculty, and He functions, He does all His universal duties, all His parental duties, with the help of that blind force. But in units, where the individual consciousness, or individual cognition, is not in a position to control that blind force, that individual will be ejected away from the proper path. And such a thing happens.” (2)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “The instrumental cause of the metamorphosis of this universe is the three principles of Prakrti. Prakrti is an entity which is doing something, but it cannot be the material cause or the efficient cause because behind the actional faculty of Prakrti there is no scope for any moral principle. Shakti or energy itself is a blind force – if it is not supported by intellect or prajiṋá it is always crude and static. Suppose an electric hammer is being operated, and a child accidentally inserts its tender hand under the hammer. The hammer will automatically smash it – its blind force will not spare the innocent child’s hand. Hence the sádhaná of Prakrti divorced from the touch of Shiva (consciousness) is highly dangerous. The Cognitive Principle itself is both the material cause and the efficient cause of creation.” (3)

Why Parama Purusa is not the cause

Parama Purusa is the source of all the energy. So if one demon in human form is twisting an innocent person’s neck, the energy of the demon’s bad action is coming from Parama Purusa. Because the act of twisting demands energy. And all energy is supplied by Parama Purusa. If He does not supply energy for even one second, then that demon’s muscles will not function. And the demon will be unable to twist that person’s neck. So some may say that Parama Purusa is the cause.

But to run this universe properly, Parama Purusa has created the system whereby prakrti maintains all the workings in this cosmos. For instance, prakrti (aka the cosmic operative principle) has created fire with the permission of Parama Purusa. Although ultimately, it is Parama Purusa who has created fire since He controls prakrti, it is  prakrti that manages everything. And prakrti has made fire in such a way that if anyone touches it they will get burned. Even if an innocent infant touches fire that baby will be burned. So Parama Purusa is not directly responsible for burning that child. Rather, on His own, Parama Purusa would not burn the child. Only because everything is governed by prakrti and prakrti is blind, that is why the child gets burned.

Fixing the Indian constitution

   Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "There are several fiscal and psychological loopholes in the Indian constitution. The constitution of India proclaims that all are equal in the eye of the law. But in practice, this principle is not followed, and as a result disparity is growing in the arena of law and justice. Such disparity is adversely affecting the different groups of people in the country. For example, there are disparities between the Hindu Code and the Muslim Code. Hindu women and Muslim women, although they are all Indian citizens, do not get equal advantages of law. For instance, according to Hindu law, a man cannot have more than one wife, but a Muslim man is entitled to have more than one wife. A Hindu husband or a Hindu wife is required to approach the court to secure a divorce, while a Muslim man is entitled to divorce his wife without the permission or approval of the court. Moreover, a Muslim husband can divorce his wife but a Muslim wife cannot divorce her husband. Besides, a Muslim husband is not required to show [[any reason for the divorce]].”
   “Disparity in the eye of the law is creating all these problems. The root of all these evils lies in the psychological loopholes of the Indian constitution. Why is the constitution allowing the Hindu Code and Muslim Code to stand side by side? Let there be only one code – the Indian Code. This Indian Code should be based on cardinal human values, with a universal approach and Neo-Humanistic spirit. Then only equality before the law can be established in practice, and equal protection of the law for all can be guaranteed. So the constitution should remove the psychological loopholes by eradicating existing disparities in the eye of the law.” (1)

Revolution: defeating a demon

Ananda Marga story states, “At first, the demon was quite unwilling to hold any discussion with them. At last, seeing them many in number, he said with reluctance, “Well, I have no objection to talk with some of your representatives.” In the course of discussion, the demon pretended that he did not deny that the demands of the humans were legitimate but where is the money? “In order to rebuild the state,” he said, “expenditure has to be curtailed; exports have to be increased and imports decreased, and it is necessary to accelerate the production of agricultural and industrial goods. If people today are busy with trifling demands, how then is it possible to rebuild the Very Odd Kingdom? So people should raise only one slogan today ‘Labour – more labour – and still more labour!’ Demands of housing, education, medical treatment – we have heard enough of your demands! Now I advise you, forget your demands for the right to higher wages, education, medical treatment, and better accommodation, for the time being – and go and labour hard!””

“The representatives of the human beings said “How wonderful! But then the question is, if you don’t accept our right to live how can we labour hard?””

“The discussion was interrupted. The demon and his associates now became active to create divisions among the youth. They said to the religious leaders, pundits, priests and mullas (religious leaders), “Do you see what is happening? Religion is becoming polluted, society is becoming polluted, everything is spoiled. After some time perhaps these loutish youth will say, ‘These pundits, priests and mullas, they are the parasites of the society; They suck the lifeblood of humanity by taking advantage of the weakness of their minds!’ So a big group of priests, pundits and mullas joined the demons. They declared, ‘What people are saying now is sheer injustice. People starve as a consequence of their own sins committed in their previous lives. So to fight for the establishment of their rights is to try to overmaster God!’”

“But there were some good people even among the priests and mullas and pundits, of course. They declared, “What the prince’s group, the human beings, are saying, is right. To support them is right”. Ministers and vice-ministers were giving them high posts in government service. Some were trapped in this way, too, but most of the people said, “We are going to be deceived by such temptation no longer – we have long been cheated for our foolishness, but no more!!””

“The Strange Demon noticed that each of his arrows was missing its target. Then he captured some good orators by spending much money. The work of these orators was to make the rank and file of human beings understand that the proper way to achieve their demand was to bear injustice silently and not resort to struggle. “By tolerating injustice,” they said, “When a person becomes non-violent, a kind of spiritual power awakens in him. And as a result of this spiritual power peace and equality prevail throughout the country. So you should rather engage yourself in the practice of self-purification than have recourse to struggle.” But the humans paid no heed to this either.”

“Now the demon became restless. He began to run to and fro like an insane person, tearing his hair and shouting violently. In no time his mask of gentleness was rent asunder. Then he started crying out loudly in his demonic tongue.”

Man-eaters, ghost-children,
Where are you my friends and comrades
Come and save me from the humans.
O black-marketeers and bribers,
O pot-bellied
Come, O come! Where are you??

Materialism & morality are mutually exclusive

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The characteristic (dharma) of the mind is to seek the infinite. The mind attains this goal by concentrating on a particular ideation. As material objects are finite, those who accept them as the aim of life eventually feel frustrated. They fail to attain bliss because neither wealth nor material objects can be enjoyed infinitely. Moreover, those who make material objects their aim in life find their self-interests in conflict with those of other people. They try to deprive others, to protect their own endless greed for wealth and material objects. There will have to be a continuous pressure on the minds of these people to keep them away from material objects. People cannot tolerate such imposition and, on becoming disgruntled, take the path of revolution or counter-revolution against those who pressurize them.”

“Materialism functions by imposing social pressure on people to enjoy material objects; and accepts that as the only mode of operation. Thus, in materialistic countries or societies, people look at one another with suspicion and act according to the information given by the intelligence agencies. In the absence of spiritual ideas, firmness of morality cannot be established. The apparent morality in a materialistic society is nothing but an immoral alliance to protect self-interests.”

All the animals are bound. They are pre-programmed by prakrti (cosmic operative principle). An animal does not think or decide anything on their own. They are dominated by various propensities and instincts, and accordingly they do certain actions. They eat, sleep, run from enemies, procreate, and hibernate etc. Whatever they do, the totality of their actions is governed by the laws of prakrti. Verily, they are slaves of prakrti.

How living beings are bound: slaves & robots of prakrti

Think of it this way. An animal is just like a robot with a different software - and accordingly they act. What is quite shocking to consider, however, is that humans are in a very similar situation as those animals. People are tightly bound by prakrti and act according to their various vrttis. People mistakenly think that they like this or that - or are free to act etc - but actually their so-called liking is just the activation of their vrttis - nothing more. Seeing the scene of how people are utterly bound without realising it, it can all seem quite bleak.

Humans are blessed by Parama Purusa with the faculty of vivek. And by using this faculty of rationality, one can become divine, by His grace. Unfortunately, the mass of people completely overlook their sense of vivek, and instead run from one desire to the next. Their life becomes just a web of engagements determined by their various vrttis. Essentially theirs is little different from animal life. Verily, they are also slaves of prakrti.

Watch out guided by prakrti or viveka

So see the drama how prakrti - the cosmic operative principle - has everything under her control. Nobody is doing anything that she has not programmed them to do. It is therefore very important to be 100% alert. One should consider whether they are doing as per their vrttis or per their vivek. A sadhaka should be keen to ensure they are living the life of a human and progressing towards divinity, and not just reverting back towards animality - i.e. compulsively acting on their vrttis.

When people are dominated by a particular vrtti - like running after the opposite sex, greed, vanity etc - then that person has completely forgotten who they really are. Running after that vrtti is not the expression of their true self. They think it is, but it is not. That is just the result of being controlled by the cosmic operative principle. By surveying the scene, it all seems quite hopeless as prakrti has such a tight grip upon all.

What is the way out

However, as noted above, there is that ray of hope - i.e. that sense of vivek that is instilled within every person. As one recognises and acts according to their rational faculty they slowly free themselves from prakrti - although no human can free themselves completely and gain liberation by their own efforts. So the secret is to always remember that when you use your vivek and take a tiny step forward on the path of spirituality, then Parama Purusa graciously takes very large steps towards you - or rather He lovingly pulls and draws you towards Him. That is the speciality of His liila.

It is no different from how parents watch and help their infant reach them when that baby is taking its first steps. Always the parents help. And same is the case with Parama Purusa. Those who utilise their vivek and aim to move towards Him will receive His immense grace. And actually Parama Purusa wants people to try. So one should sit in sadhana and put forth effort and engage in all kinds of dharmic life practices as per Sixteen Points. Seeing your sincere effort, He will draw you near. That is the special way for gaining His grace and attaining Him.

Even if it seems like nothing is happening in sadhana, it is important to sit and repeat your Ista mantra. That is all one can do. And the rest is up to Him. And by seeing Your efforts He will certainly be gracious. One should never lose hope or revert to habits of old. Always one should make constant efforts to advance. Then success is sure - by His fathomless grace.

Leave for other allurements

Sadly, we see this even with some who become Wts in Ananda Marga. Due to their good samskara, vivek, and Guru’s grace they come onto the path, and then in some cases they leave for other allurements, completely driven by various propensities. And not just Wts, this can happen to any aspirant. So vigilance is needed. As sadhakas it is extremely important to consider how we conduct ourselves in this world and understand how this creation is operating.


Conclusion

So beware - by not putting forth any effort then He cannot help you. There are millions of jiivas who are not making any efforts towards their emancipation. And if Parama Purusa helps some but not others that would be partiality. But He is never partial. Always He is just and fair to all. That means He only helps those who move towards Him, and all the rest who are doing nothing remain completely bound and programmed by prakrti.

So one should use their vivek and ensure they are moving forward on the dharmic path - then one is sure to escape the clutches and programming of prakrti, and attain Him, by His grace.

When a child falls into the gutter

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Indeed, the relationship between Parama Puruśa and other jiivas is that of a father and his children. When a child falls into the gutter people may laugh, poke fun, or even humiliate him or her. The child’s father, however, will not behave in such a way. He will rush over, lift the child out of the gutter and give it a good wash. This is his duty as a father.” (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “And what is the nature of sin? Suppose again that a child is walking on the road. Suddenly it falls into the gutter. Naturally its arms and legs will be covered with mud. Will the father despise his child in this condition? Other people on the road may be repelled. But what will the father do? He will immediately pull his child out of the drain, wash its arms, legs, and body, take it on his lap, and try to console it: “What makes you cry, my child! Everything is okay now. You are all clean now. I’ll dry you off with a towel.” The position of those branded by society as sinners is like this.” (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “A mother tries to coax and cajole her crying son, and offers him some toys to divert his attention, so that she can work in the kitchen. The child stops crying and forgets his mother for the time being. But if he is a bit naughty, he will again resume his effort to reach the breast of his mother. He will throw away the toys and cry for Mother only. And the mother ultimately has to come and take the child on her lap. A devoted sádhaka is like this child. He or she will say, “O Father, this world that I see all around is a plethora of toys. This world took its birth at a certain time, so it will also come to an end at some time or other. This world has not been given permanently to anybody.” If God is asked whether He has given this world-toy to anybody forever, He will not be able to answer, for He does not give things forever. He gives with the right hand and takes away with the left.” (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “There must also be a fourth factor, darshana pravaktá, that is, a propounder who will train the people in philosophy, for the philosophical treatises may be wrongly interpreted. For instance, it was written, Vidhavá agre gamiśyati [“A widow should go (die) before (her husband)”]. But later, due to a defective interpretation, this was misread as Vidhavá agne gamiśyati [“A widow should go into the fire”].” (1)

Note: While reading yellow highlighted words above, a question arises: The editors have added their own translation of a Sam'skrta sentence Baba gave. 

The editors' translation is: “[A widow should go (die) before (her husband].” 

Now, when we call anyone a widow, it means that her husband is already dead. And when her husband is already dead, how can that widow possibly die before her husband? She cannot; it is impossible. 

Now fix your edition of the Namah Shivaya Shantaya book by deleting this line which is in the square brackets ⇒ [“A widow should go (die) before (her husband)”]

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, You are the embodiment and illumination of hope, inspiration, and bliss and have come to remove all my afflictions. Language is wholly incapable of expressing Your greatness. In this poignant hour, You have come to relieve me of all my agonies and sufferings in a flash, and wipe away my tears. In the blink of an eye, You eradicated countless sinful and crude thoughts that had accumulated in my mind since ages. It is Your krpa’. 

Baba, nobody except You is mine - to whom else can I share my pain of my core. You are the only Entity in this universe who is my own, with whom I can open my heart and show everything. Besides You there is no one else in this entire cosmos - within these three worlds, tribhuvan, with whom I can tell my inner feelings. You are my nearest.

Parama Purusa, You are the nucleus of all refulgence. Please grace me and sing the song of divinity in my ears. Kindly come to me. I have prepared one freshly blossomed flower garland for You which is full of fragrance. And I am waiting for that auspicious moment when You will come. Then in a lonely place I will offer that mala to You. Baba, You are my all. With Your gracious arrival, all my sufferings have disappeared because I have gotten You. This is exclusively Your mercy…

When democracy becomes a mockery

   Prout philosophy states, “The fact that voters without political consciousness weaken the governmental machinery cannot be denied. In the interests of the general public, it is desirable that uneducated and less-educated people do not have the right to vote.”
   “Democracy is a mockery in a country of uneducated people. In such a country cunning, fraudulent persons very easily secure or purchase the votes of illiterate people. Moreover, the general public in such a country is easily misled by the propagation of casteism or communalism.”
   Prout philosophy states, “The success of democracy depends upon educated, sensible voters. Hence, in a democratic country, the spread of education is of the highest priority. For the convenience of the general public, the educational system must be free of cost. No overbearing government pressure should be exerted on the educational system, otherwise the party in power will continue to propagate its ideas through the medium of education.” (1)

Prout philosophy states, "Unity and benevolent intellect lead human beings towards supreme fulfilment. Reading voluminous treatises on philosophy will be of no use in awakening this benevolent intellect. For this, one will have to sincerely follow Yama and Niyama in individual life. To establish unity, the society will have to select an ideology which remains unassailed by any spatial, temporal or personal differences. That is why only Cosmic ideology will have to be adopted as the polestar of life." (1)
