Specialty of AM schools + 3 more

Baba
Specialty of AM schools

Namaskar,

These days it is not easy to do pracara and inspire people to take initiation because they are in a vastly different flow of life. Society is crude and grossly materialistic, and that has an adverse effect on the populace. Also, the prevailing system of education does not address the development of the whole human personality. That is why Baba has given the neo-humanistic system of education.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Why neo-humanistic education is unparalleled

With the spread of the Ananda Marga system of primary education, so many will be ready to become margiis. Pracara will be comparatively effortless as most - in their early years - will have gained an appreciation for spirituality. They will be inclined in that way. And verily, this is the only avenue to create a big wave of new margiis on a mass level. When our primary schools are in every village then so many will be eager and ready for sadhana and our Ananda Marga way of life. A neo-humanistic primary school education will provide them the requisite groundwork for a life based on a spiritual ideal.

Now it is our duty to implement it. Failing that, people will just escape the trap of one deficient educational system, only to fall into another one. That is not the solution. It is just like abandoning one broken boat and jumping into another broken boat, thinking that will save you. But that other broken boat is not going to save your life.

In response to the problems of today’s educational system, other alternative, i.e. so-called progressive, schools are not the answer for a child’s entire growth. At present, they may seem more appealing or better financed than our Ananda Marga schools, but they are not the final solution. A neo-humanistic outlook paves the way for both individual and collective well-being. Students will cultivate a universal outlook, understand the purpose of life, as well as realise their inherent familial relationship with all beings and objects of this universe. Only schools led by Ananda Marga sadhakas and supported by sympathizers can truly lead humanity forward.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

First and foremost, our Ananda Marga outlook is grounded in this supreme truth: When the social system is not functioning and society needs a way to move forward, then Taraka Brahma comes in the form of Mahasambhuti. And He provides all kinds of guidelines in all spheres of life, like the system of neo-humanistic education.

We are fortunate and blessed to have access to His divine teachings. We should do all we can to implement and propagate these ideals.

When to instill values? In formative years

Here we have to remember that primary education is the best time, and the cream of the entire life, to teach anything. At that time, the mind of the child is ready to receive whatever you teach. They will eagerly embrace all kinds of ideas and teachings - and those guidelines will remain with them - in their heart and mind - through the course of their life. Children who attend our primary schools will thrive and grow.

If we fail to give proper neo-humanistic teachings then, their whole life will move in another direction, as they will never be able to pick up those points. Children need to be taught the fundamentals when they are young - when they will readily absorb and embrace all that is imparted to them. Whereas if you try to teach Ananda Marga ideals after one has already entered adolescence then the situation is completely different. Instead of following and learning, they will be argumentative and non-cooperative. By that time - by the age of 13 or so - already the window has been missed. Because in those pre-pubescent years, the child will absorb all that you teach them like a sponge.

That is why at least primary education must be done in a neo-humanistic manner. Thereafter, for college and higher education, one may attend other types of institutions if Ananda Marga universities are not available. But the cream of human development and learning – and setting a course for one’s life – is from 0 to 12 years of age. At that time, they learn quickly and they follow what they see and read. So that is the time to instill high ideals and great thoughts. If one’s primary education is done in a neo-humanistic way, then they will not be swayed or harmed by other institutions later in life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

These primary schools will prepare students with a solid base to become margiis in the future. But the current style of education is detrimental as it utterly fails to introduce and goad kids towards the spiritual path. As our primary schools introduce kids to spirituality at an early age, they will be ripe to join Ananda Marga and their whole personality will blossom.

Why AM primary schools in every village

Every child who attends our Ananda Marga primary schools will have a proper outlook and follow a mode of living based on sadhana, service and sacrifice. They will have reverence for their teachers, parents, adults, and educators and they will adhere to what points they are taught. All these ideals and more are instilled early on – in primary school  education etc.

And creating a primary school is very easy. It does not demand a lot of resources. Each and every neighborhood must have an Ananda Marga primary school. This is where we should make a concerted effort. Not a lot of resources are needed, and those kids will turn into true Ananda Margiis or sympathizers. There are so many benefits.

And again, all that is needed to begin is one teacher who is a committed Ananda Margii. A non-margii cannot guide children in neo-humanistic education. The teacher or principal must be a margii in order to impart the proper values etc.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Whereas with a high school, a huge amount of resources are needed: money, teachers, supplies - all on a large scale. So it is a double-loss. Our valuable resources will be all tied to one institution and those students will develop their own worldly outlook independent of Ananda Marga. While in reporting itself, Baba condemned the idea of creating high schools, and if anyone did so then Baba would create the situation to close it. Instead He wants maximum primary schools.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "We must start primary schools throughout the entire world to create a spiritual urge amongst the little pupils. I am not in favour of starting colleges; I am in favour of starting primary schools. In the entire world we have got one degree college at Ananda Nagar and thousands of kindergarten schools. That is why it is desirable in the first phase to start many primary schools instead of colleges. Merely opening high schools and colleges without a proper system of education will not serve the purpose. Rather, thousands of kindergarten and primary schools must be started with this new system of education, to create a spiritual urge amongst children throughout the entire world." (1)

Conclusion

Ananda Marga’s unique system of neo-humanistic education is the solution to the present problems of today’s humanity. The Ananda Marga system of primary school education, along with sadhana, will lead to the proper growth and progress of human beings.

“A thirst for knowledge”

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The thirst for knowledge will have to be awakened among students, and reverence, devotion, orderliness and discipline will have to be taught as well.” (2)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “So as I was saying, it will not do to impart education through intimidation. A thirst for knowledge must be awakened, and, to quench that thirst, proper education must be given. Only then will education be worthwhile and develop the body, mind and ideals of the student.” (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Education must awaken the thirst for knowledge in the students’ minds. The students themselves will create environmental pressure by persistent demands for answers to queries like: What is the answer? Is it correct? The longing, “I wish to know…I wish to understand and assimilate the entire universe” should be created. Such a thirst for knowledge should be created in the minds of students…So a tremendous thirst for knowledge must be awakened in the students’ minds. They will constantly pry their teachers, their parents and their neighbours with questions like: Why is this so? What is that? Why does that happen? Why does this not happen? etc. They are ready to assimilate the entire universe.” (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “How many teachers try to awaken a genuine thirst for knowledge in their students?” (5)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Students go to school and sit for examinations in order to pass. Examiners should bear this fact in mind. They should not adopt the rigid position that “Only such-and-such percentage of students will be allowed to pass.” Examiners should take into account only the range of knowledge and the extent of the thirst for knowledge the students possess.” (6)

Lack method for training child’s mind

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Children are by nature most inclined towards play, so a thirst for knowledge will have to be awakened in children through the medium of play – children should be educated through play methods. Children are also by nature inclined to listen to fantasies and stories. Through stories children can easily be taught the history and geography of various countries, and they may also be taught the initial lessons of how to practise universalism in their lives. Children love play and stories almost equally, so in their case the two should be equally utilized.” (7)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The mental outlook of children has already been moulded in a particular fashion by the influence of their family environment before they start school. No matter what or how much they learn at school, it is extremely difficult for them to free themselves from the influence of their family. Drawing on what they have learned in the family, the immature minds of children begin to learn about the world and understand it, and to receive ideas and master language so that they can express those ideas. Unhesitatingly they adopt their elders’ way of looking at the world. Hence the primary responsibility for acquainting children with the world lies with their parents or guardians. Children will become assets of society in the future to the extent that their parents or guardians discharge their duties properly.”
“I have no hesitation in saying that today’s adults have not yet developed a scientific method of training children’s minds. Even most so-called educated and refined people, let alone average adults, are either ignorant about or indifferent to the education of their children. Their ignorance may be pardoned, but how can we forgive their indifference? The family into which a child has been born will naturally have to bear the primary responsibility for the physical, mental and spiritual development of that child.” (8)

Desperate state of mind

"Sukhe ele na'ko, shoke sa'ntvana' dite ele..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3091)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, when I was feeling happy and content, You did not come. Those days I was singing my own glory and did not even think to call You. So You did not appear before me. But when I lost all that joy and become drowned in my sorrows of self-pity, wallowing and overwhelmed by various problems, then You immediately came and consoled me. In that desperate moment, You compassionately relieved me of my grief. In the past I did not ever feel that You are mine. In this life I was always suffering from the vanity and ego of my own I-feeling. Those days I was thinking that, “I am everything.” Due to my arrogance, I did not accept You as the Supreme One or embrace You as that most loving Entity who can solve all my problems. I could not surrender at Your feet. Baba, even then, by Your mercy, You came deep inside my heart and became mine. Now I understand that You are ever-merciful and remain with me always.

Parama Purusa, those days when I was burdened by that severe agony, I did not outrightly tell You about my problems. I remained silent and refused to express my pain to You. As You are ever-present as the eternal shelter in my heart, with Your infinite kindness You fully understood the desperate state of my mind. You knew my sorrow and instantly poured Your endless sweetness and love.

My Supreme Guide, due to my pride and narcissism I could not recognise You or feel the immense karun’a’ and how You were showering causeless grace on me. Just I thought that it was due to my own qualities that everything was happening. In those happy times I could not see You. Only did I begin to perceive You in my times of distress. Baba, in my state of terrible trials and tribulations, when the mountain of misery started falling on my head, all my friends left me. I was all alone. In my good days, they were along with me, but when I became lost in my own misery all those companions disappeared. You are the exact opposite. When I was sunk in woe then You immediately came and removed all my torments and troubles. Baba, You bathed me in Your infinite love. Filling my I-feeling with Your bliss, You surrounded me each and every second.

Baba, You are love Personified. You have done everything for me. I surrender at Your altar...

Q & A on immortality

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Ya'jinavalkya asked, 'What would you like?'" "Maetreyii replied: 'Yena'ham' na'mrtasya'm' tena'ham' kim kurya'm'" "'What will I do with things which will not remain with me permanently? Of what use are the objects which will not establish me in immortality?...'Please give me that thing which will remain with me permanently, which I'll be able to preserve forever, which will establish me in immortality. I don't want anything else.'" "Then Ya'jinavalkya gave her a number of instructions, upon which a major part of Raja Yoga is based'." (1)

Note: As described in the above teaching, worldly things do not remain very long. That is why ideal people goad their mind towards Parama Purusa. Being Parama Purusa and Guru, Baba has given us the path. On this point, we are extremely fortunate. Now our main duty is to follow His ideological teachings, i.e the path to Supreme fulfillment.

Fundamental base of Prout

Prout philosophy states, “The universe is the thought projection of Brahma, so the ownership of the universe lies with the Supreme Entity...Everything is the common patrimony of all, and the Father of all is Brahma…We must not forget, even for a single moment, that the entire animate world is a vast joint family. Nature has not assigned any portion of this property to any particular individual. Private ownership has been created by selfish opportunists, as the loopholes in this system provide them with ample scope for self-aggrandizement through exploitation. When the entire wealth of the universe is the common patrimony of all living beings, can the system in which some roll in luxury, while others, deprived of a morsel of food, shrivel up and starve to death bit by bit, be said to have the support of dharma?” (1)

Note: So long as one does not feel this above teaching in the inner core of their heart then their understanding of Prout remains nothing but a dream. Only when this teaching is deeply embedded in one’s mind will a person be able to strongly oppose economic injustice.

We shall have to remain ever vigilant

"In the transitional period of civilization, honesty in individual life is a prime necessity. We shall have to remain ever vigilant that the darkness of petty self-interest may not shroud this supreme human treasure. With the very extinction of honesty, civilization too will not survive; the long sádhaná of the human race will go in vain, and all intellectual achievements will become meaningless. Book knowledge that cannot be utilized in life has no value." (Ananda Vanii #7)

History of medicine - 7

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Different kinds of metals and non-metals have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Gold, silver, tin and mercury especially have been used since ancient times for medicinal purposes. The famous Ayurvedic medicine makaradhvaja is prepared from a combination of mercury and sulphide. There is no dearth of medicines produced from calcium in homeopathy, allopathy, Unani, Ayurveda, whatever system it may be. Medicines produced from the conch shell, which have generated excitement since ancient times, are actually nothing but calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide."
"The value of the principle shama samaḿ shamayati [similia similibus curantue – “like cures like”)] has been understood by human beings since the age of the Mahábhárata, but it was Mahatma Hahnemann who brought it to the scientific level through his system of homeopathy. People realized the value of this principle during the Mahábhárata age from the poison treatment of the poisoned Bhiima. There were considerable advances in Ayurveda in poison research, especially with snake, scorpion, spider and hornet poisons. Within Ayurveda, members of the royal family of Cochin in the state of Kerala were pioneers in this. At one time there was a good deal of individual research into poison treatments. My maternal grandfather, the late Dr. U. M. Basu (allopath) conducted research into the medicinal use of scorpion poison, but he died before his research findings could be properly documented. The science of allopathy does not seem to have made much progress in these treatments, but there are endless opportunities for making progress in this respect." (1)

Neo-humanism & schooling + 3 more

Baba
Neo-humanism & schooling

Namaskar,

The Ananda Marga system of neo-humanistic education is the solution for the present-day crisis in schools. But, if in place of using or recommending our Ananda Marga schools, we follow another path, then that is not helpful. Rather, it will hinder or even halt progress. The situation may become more complicated and the problem may multiply.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga / neo-humanist education

The main idea is that our Guru has created one beautiful, unique approach: Neo-humanistic education. We need only to accept it and bring it into practice. Naturally there will be a "learning curve", but the more we practically adopt neo-humanistic learning centers / Ananda Marga schools in our own lives, the better and more established those schools will become. We should not sit back and wait for others to make our Ananda Marga schools famous and well-reputed. We should step forward.

Here Baba guides us how the Ananda Marga system of education aims at the all-round development of the human personality. Neo-humanistic education recognises all realms of life: Physical, psychic, social, moral, and spiritual. In contrast, other systems of education, especially western / materialistic approaches, fall far short of the mark. They merely train students to be money-making machines. They do not address high ideals like a sense of duty, sacrifice, service, or spiritual outlook - all of which are pillars for making an ideal human being. Such qualities are entirely lacking in the western model.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "Defective systems of education also strike a blow at pra'na dharma'...Ananda Marga is ever vigilant in this regard. The Ananda Marga system of education has been formulated in such a way that the fundamental pra'na dharma' of humanity has been fully recognised. The educational system of our schools is based on the principle of pra'na dharma. It includes the study of various aspects of modern branches of human knowledge, as well as the development of qualities such as reverence, good manners, humility, dignity of labor, social consciousness etc. The western system of education has miserably failed to inculcate these rare qualities in the students minds." (1)

Guidelines of neo-humanistic education - A

As we know, our neo-humanistic educational model aims for the all-round development of the student’s personality. Here are a list of topics, approaches, and strategies that are inculcated in our educational system:

1. Emphasis placed on duty, sacrifice, service, and cosmic outlook: These qualities can be inculcated only through sadhana, a spiritual, God-centered vision, as well as via role-models who verily embody these principles. Perhaps above all else, this is the absolute specialty of Ananda Marga and our neo-humanistic model.

2. Infusing within the student a sense of inquiry and reflection: What is life? Children should be encouraged and taught to contemplate and discuss the true value of human life. With sadhana and proper guidance, they will easily understand how they should conduct themselves in order to reach the Goal of life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

3. Asking and answering big questions:
(a) Who am I?
(b) From where have I come?
(c) What is the destination of my life?
(d) What happens after death?
(e) What is my relation with this creation?
(f) Under Whom do I take shelter?
(g) What is the purpose of life and death?

All these queries, which are verily absent from the present-day western model of education, are key principles of neo-humanistic education. We are to cultivate within the student a broad vision and empower them with the ability and insight to realize their place in this cosmos. By addressing such grand philosophical teachings through practical daily circumstances and stories, students gain tremendous courage and strength to persevere in life and attain the Goal.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Guidelines of neo-humanistic education - B

4. Practice sadhana regularly: Without dharma sadhana, the mind cannot develop properly. Baba guides us that every child should start sadhana at the age of five. That ensures proper spiritual growth and a healthy mental outlook.

5. Sing and dance kiirtan: Spiritual chanting and music awaken the finer sentiments and goad the human heart to the path of bhakti. This is verily a blessing for every youth and sadhaka.

6. Learn Prabhat Samgiita: This will help develop one's relationship with the Supreme Entity, Parama Purusa Baba. Students will learn how music, song, and dance are for channelizing one's mind towards the Divine. These mystical compositions provide youths with a God-centered vision and awaken one's tendencies towards both nandan vijiana (aesthetic science) and mohan vijiana (supra-aesthetic science).
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

7. Teach yama and niyama: Students must be made to understand - practically and theoretically - the proper meaning of these moral principles. In the general society, there is a lot of misunderstanding about this. By teaching young students the right meaning of yama and niyama, they will be fortified with the tools to live properly in society and proceed on the spiritual path.

8. Follow a sentient diet: In our neo-humanistic model, food, diet, and nutrition are key components for learning about human health. Students learn that a sentient, vegetarian diet is also in harmony with caring for and respecting the animal and plant kingdoms, as well as the greater ecosystem.

9. Ensure teachers practice what they preach: All teachers are responsible for upholding a standard of conduct that is consonant with neo-humanistic ideals. There is no scope for hypocrisy: Teachers must emulate what they teach. Thus they will not indulge in any kind of intoxicants - neither nicotine nor tobacco - nor eat non-veg food.

Guidelines of neo-humanistic education - C

10. Gender-separate classrooms: No co-education will occur once children reach adolescence. This will aid greatly in the transfer of knowledge as students will focus on the lesson and not be diverted elsewhere.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

11. Universal outlook: The hallmark of a neo-humanistic system of education will be the universal approach where all are looked upon as expressions of the One. There will be no scope for narrow-mindedness etc.

12. Subjective approach and objective adjustment: This fundamental idea of our Ananda Marga way of life will be imparted to all students. They will understand first and foremost that the aim of life is the Spiritual Goal - serving and pleasing Him - and that with this aim in mind all kinds of service should be done in the world.

13. Respect: Values such as reverence for parents, teachers, elders, and acaryas etc will be inculcated.

14. And points will be instilled related with the physical, psychic, emotional, moral, and spiritual development of the child.

All of these above themes and topics are wholeheartedly conveyed and included in our neo-humanistic education curriculum and approach. This will spark a great change.

Thus far, the western system of education has utterly failed to touch any of these ideals and values. This distinct vacuum has led to the downfall and degeneration of western, materialistic society - as well as any portion of the globe that copied the western model.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Here below are Baba's teachings related with this topic of education, neo-humanistic schools, and child development.

"I am not in favour of starting colleges" - Baba

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "We must start primary schools throughout the entire world to create a spiritual urge amongst the little pupils. I am not in favour of starting colleges; I am in favour of starting primary schools. In the entire world we have got one degree college at Ananda Nagar and thousands of kindergarten schools. That is why it is desirable in the first phase to start many primary schools instead of colleges. Merely opening high schools and colleges without a proper system of education will not serve the purpose. Rather, thousands of kindergarten and primary schools must be started with this new system of education, to create a spiritual urge amongst children throughout the entire world." (2)

Ananda Marga philosophy teaches us, “It is the birthright of everybody to march in this universal march, to move along this path of righteousness. Just show the path to all-- just tell them, 'Oh, human beings, the path is ready for you, you just come!' Whoever is endowed with a human mind and a human body is entitled to follow this path." (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "For this purpose we should have a two-fold approach. For the purpose of training this turbulent mind, what is to be done? One is to get proper education, one is to be imparted with proper education -- not general education -- in the gospel of, in the idea of Neo-Humanism. This will help human beings in training the mind. And at the same time spiritual practice should go on for proper psychic remoulding. This what we require most. There is no alternative." (4)

Namaskar,
At His lotus feet,
Viveka

The way Baba did with Gaotam

One day Baba's laokik brother was contemplating where to send his son, Niltu, for his schooling. Although his plan was to ask Baba for advice, first he brought the matter to various Dadas for their thoughts and suggestions. They were telling him to send his young boy Niltu to one of those prestigious, non-margii schools in Kolkata that offered so-called top-notch facilities and a "high-standard of education".
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

After discussing the matter with numerous acaryas, he approached Baba for His suggestion. Many were thinking that Baba will also suggest a fancy school in Kolkata for Niltu to pursue his studies. But that was not Baba's reply. Instead Baba advised that Niltu should attend the school in Ananda Nagar and get his education there.

Those who heard this felt surprised because those days Ananda Nagar was lacking even the most basic facilities. Yet it was Baba's firm recommendation that Niltu should do his schooling on our Ananda Marga Master Unit. Ultimately, Niltu attended our Ananda Marga schools in Ananda Nagar.

That case of Niltu's education is not an isolated one. When Baba's first laokik son Gaotam was living with Him - those days before 1970 - then he too attended an Ananda Marga school. This stands as one clear path for raising our own children, as well as guiding others, if they ask our suggestion.

Kindle thirst for knowledge

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The thirst for knowledge will have to be awakened among students, and reverence, devotion, orderliness and discipline will have to be taught as well." (5)

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "So as I was saying, it will not do to impart education through intimidation. A thirst for knowledge must be awakened, and, to quench that thirst, proper education must be given. Only then will education be worthwhile and develop the body, mind and ideals of the student." (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Education must awaken the thirst for knowledge in the students’ minds. The students themselves will create environmental pressure by persistent demands for answers to queries like: What is the answer? Is it correct? The longing, “I wish to know...I wish to understand and assimilate the entire universe” should be created. Such a thirst for knowledge should be created in the minds of students...So a tremendous thirst for knowledge must be awakened in the students’ minds. They will constantly pry their teachers, their parents and their neighbours with questions like: Why is this so? What is that? Why does that happen? Why does this not happen? etc. They are ready to assimilate the entire universe." (7)

Teach the initial lessons to practise universalism

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "How many teachers try to awaken a genuine thirst for knowledge in their students?" (8)

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "Students go to school and sit for examinations in order to pass. Examiners should bear this fact in mind. They should not adopt the rigid position that “Only such-and-such percentage of students will be allowed to pass.” Examiners should take into account only the range of knowledge and the extent of the thirst for knowledge the students possess." (9)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Children are by nature most inclined towards play, so a thirst for knowledge will have to be awakened in children through the medium of play – children should be educated through play methods. Children are also by nature inclined to listen to fantasies and stories. Through stories children can easily be taught the history and geography of various countries, and they may also be taught the initial lessons of how to practise universalism in their lives. Children love play and stories almost equally, so in their case the two should be equally utilized." (10)

No intoxicants in the classroom

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The mental outlook of children has already been moulded in a particular fashion by the influence of their family environment before they start school. Children will become assets of society in the future to the extent that their parents or guardians discharge their duties properly."
"I have no hesitation in saying that today’s adults have not yet developed a scientific method of training children’s minds. Even most so-called educated and refined people, let alone average adults, are either ignorant about or indifferent to the education of their children. Their ignorance may be pardoned, but how can we forgive their indifference? The family into which a child has been born will naturally have to bear the primary responsibility for the physical, mental and spiritual development of that child." (11)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Speaking of ideals, yet another point comes to my mind, and that is the moral character and conduct of teachers. Many teachers demonstrate a flagrant lack of restraint over their language. There are also teachers who, after discussing the abuses and evils of intoxicants in the classroom, immediately go outside and start smoking. This sets an extremely bad example. If the teachers would just use intoxicants, without saying anything about them, it might not be so bad. But this approach naturally encourages the students to be undisciplined. They will think that the use of such things must be enjoyable, and that their teachers deprive them so that they can enjoy them alone." (12)

"Invoking imaginary goblins or frightful ghosts"

Ananda Marga philosophy teaches us, "It must be the teachers’ responsibility to impart knowledge, teach restraint in social life, and give instruction about all the various aspects of collective endeavour, but the parents will have to take on most of the responsibility for the moral and spiritual education of the child." (13)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The method of extracting work by terrorizing the minds of children is not only made use of by a particular type of teacher, it is also often still more harmfully practised by parents. They frighten their children, tell them lies, engage in scurrilous brawls before them, and deceive and torment them; but they still expect that some day their children will become respectable members of society – that their children will bring glory to their family name. When their children are reluctant to drink milk or sleep, they terrify them by invoking imaginary goblins or frightful ghosts. Children initially have no fear, yet a fearful panorama is played out before them. Through this practice the parents may achieve some temporary gain, but even if the children wait a lifetime, they can never be compensated for the harm done to them. Even when these same children attain young adulthood, the thought of ghosts will not leave their minds – ghosts will become their permanent companions." (14)

Myth of multi-tasking

The typical person has numerous aims. For example, they want to be the king, president, billionaire, film hero, sports star, musical icon etc. In that sense, the average person is multi-purpose. But at the same time living beings are unilateral. We can only do one work at one time. People talk about multi-tasking, but it is an impossibility for unit beings. The mind cannot do two works at the same time. And if one tries to multi-task, their mind will become bifurcated and ultimately degenerated, and / or they will find themselves in a terrible accident.

Best is to do one task at one time. By cultivating that quality in sadhana humans become one with Parama Purusa. By doing sadhana and with His grace, the aspirant does become one with Parama Purusa. And then, after losing their individuality, they can work multilaterally - i.e. in all directions. Till then, do not try and do many works at one time.

Only one direction, at one time

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Microcosm is multipurposive but its flow is unilateral. On the other hand, Macrocosm is uni-purpose but its flow is multilateral. There is no end to the desires of microcosm. Sometimes it desires fame and sometimes it desires money. But it can make itself travel at one time in one direction only. His mind cannot be simultaneously engaged in a book and in a football game. While reading, if he thinks of the football game his mind is diverted from the book. Similarly, he cannot enjoy the football game if in the football game he begins to think about his books. Hence, the flow of the unit is unilateral. It travels only in one direction, at one time, whereas Macrocosm is uni-purpose but multilateral. There is only one thought of Macrocosm and that is the well-being of all. This is His one sole purpose. Yet Macrocosm is a multi-lateral flow. He does many things simultaneously. He is feeding you, creating the world, making rivers, canals and birds. Everything is being created in His mind. Hence there is much variety in His mind.” (1)

History & ethics of medicine

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Moonlight is not a medicine like sunlight is. Rather moonlight often overwhelms the mind with a different kind of emotion. However, the qualities of medicinal herbs and plants are affected according to the difference in moonlight, that is, in accordance with the lunar day and lunar fortnight. So there are rules for removing medicinal plants from the soil, preparation of medicines and their uses in accordance with the lunar day. The medicinal qualities undergo changes during the different periods of the day, so one should use medicines with that factor in mind; at least it is better if it is done so. Those medicinal herbs and plants or those medicines whose qualities are affected according to the difference in lunar day or planetary position are called kulyá. So you see, this also is a meaning of the word kulyá."
"Not only have human beings used plant substances for medicines since ancient times, they have also prepared medicines extensively from animals. In the Ayurvedic, Vaidyaka and Unani systems of medicine, animal substances, such as the livers of different animals and partridge fat, were used extensively. Who is not familiar with the medicine prepared from the body of a goat and oil from the hornbill? Medicines used to be prepared from the livers, pancreases, etc., of different animals in the allopathic system of treatment. In recent times they have been used for insulin. Cod liver oil and shark oil are frequently used. They are used not only as oral medicines but also in injections. Medicines such as naja, cina, and apis in homeopathy are completely of animal origin. Killing an animal in order to save the life of a human being may not be a very good practice, but it can be done when there is no alternative. This is a universally accepted principle. But when medicines are prepared by killing animals, it should be done as far as possible from those animals which are the born enemies of human beings. Those who are not the born enemies of human beings but are their natural friends should not be killed." (1)
