How to surmount any weakness + 4 more

Baba
How to surmount any weakness

Namaskar,

Getting stuck in harmful habits is a common problem these days, but especially so with teenagers because they are more impressionable. They are more prone and susceptible to falling prey to the negative aspects of their surroundings. Especially nowadays when our youths are hounded 24/7 by savvy business marketing teams. Those advertising professionals are constantly trying to allure and tempt our youths.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

When we think about what most affects a person's development, generally speaking, the formula is, "If one's company is good then people are involved in good works; but, if one's company is bad then the tendency is to get caught up in bad habits." Since the present social environment is filled with so many degenerative behaviors, many get adversely affected. And it is especially the youths who get allured.

When many houses are infested all get affected

In this circumstance, parents, family members, and friends may not know exactly how to solve the problem. When the problem is not checked, it mushrooms into a veritable crisis. And the root cause is exposure to negative vices, degrading tendencies, and harmful addictions etc. For instance, petty thievery, if not checked, may escalate into large-scale robberies and larceny; and, without any intervention, watching degraded films might also lead to more debased dealings.

That is why Baba's direction is that at the earliest possible moment a proper human society should be formed. Because if only a single house is clean, and all the surrounding houses are dirty and filled with flies, then the foul smell from those flea-infested houses will certainly envelop the clean house also. Given the current climate of degrading materialism, it is our duty to help our youths, and one and all. We should guide them and goad their minds in the proper direction.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Solution: goad mind towards sentient engagements

To solve this problem of negative habits and addictive behaviours, Baba's teaching is to channelise and engage the mind in positive activities. Trying to solve the problem by inviting the patient to watch pseudo-culture movies or adopting "less negative habits" like cigarette smoking in the place of narcotics will not suffice. That will only create more temptation and further depravity. The best approach is to engage people in positive, sentient endeavours like music, art, discussion forums, sports, and healthy competitions in social service. These types of activities will help youths, and all people, break the downward spiral of depravity, and lead them in a healthy, more refined direction.

Baba also guides us that if a person does sadhana then a positive result will arrive more quickly. Even inborn criminals can be wholly transformed with the help of sadhana and asanas. By following Baba's guidelines, everyone will get the opportunity to progress rapidly and steer clear from negative habits and other weaknesses.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In this following teaching from the discourse 'Vya'tireka-1', Baba is guiding us that the best way to cure addicts from their negative behaviors is not to remind them directly of their addiction but to engage their mind in healthier and higher pursuits.

   Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The best psychological cure for addicts is to put them in an environment where they will be unable to think of their object of addiction for any length of time. To proclaim, "Don't do this, it's bad," is futile, for it is a negative approach. If you say, "Don't drink wine", you are still injecting the concept of wine into the alcoholic's mind, thus making it impossible for him to forget it and kick (quit) his bad habits. You are giving alcohol negative publicity, and it again becomes his mental object. Thus whenever he gets the opportunity he will certainly drink it again. And it may be that this negative approach encourages the alcoholic to become even more addicted. It is a defective approach."
   "These days the sign "No smoking please" is placed in many public places, but it will not reduce the amount of smoking. If society wants people to stop smoking, its approach should be to divert the smoker's mind to other objects. A chain smoker should be encouraged to get involved in various pursuits such as music, dance, songs, culture of fine arts, etc., for if the mind remains engaged in these things it will forget its object of addiction. But the person who thinks, "I'll stop drinking wine the day after tomorrow-- no, let me see, why not tomorrow", can never kick the habit, for wine remains the mental object. The mind will try to materialise whatever it thinks about in the external world - this is its nature." (1)

Conclusion

Negative habits and tendencies should be replaced by positive ones. A person should not try to simply decrease the bad habit, rather that degrading tendency should be wholly exchanged for a sentient engagement. And the way to achieve this is by goading the mind towards uplifting pursuits that refine the mind. By this way, we will be able to help many who have gotten stuck in a rut of degrading materialistic tendencies, especially our youths.

~ In-depth study ~

Step by step: animal to human

Animal tendencies are still dominant in many people as all have come from animal life. That is why most human beings easily get attracted to negative allurements. It does not need any special training or practice to plunge into degrading behaviours. You will not find many educational institutions that teach people how to rob, or cheat, or deceive, or how to drink wine, and use illicit drugs etc. People need not be taught those things as it is a natural tendency to lean towards degeneration. So in this condition it is the duty of those who have a more developed mind to help others progress.

Here below Baba shows how we may overcome various social ills and guide people along the path of welfare.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "There are certain common and natural tendencies in human life. Those tendencies are of either a degenerating or an exalting nature, that is, they are either of a depraving or an elevating nature. We should encourage the elevating tendencies and discourage the depraving tendencies. In certain portions of this world, depraving tendencies such as … exist. Protesting will not stop or check it unless we also do something positive to check it. If we do something positive, it will create a new stir in the human mind. … and other depraving tendencies will be completely discouraged and checked. That will be our course of action. We have to create new literature, new books, new music, new songs...we have to create a cultural stir. These are our immediate duties. We have to chalk out a programme and act accordingly." (2)

Why eyes are in front

One other important point to be aware of is that Baba tells us not to think about past misdeeds. One should forget about them. That is why He has designed human beings to have both eyes in the front: so every aspirant may look forward and march towards the Goal. Thinking about past negative events will cause those miseries and bad habits to come again and again in the mind.

Ananda Vanii says, "...No human being should ever belittle or slight themselves, rather they should make rigorous efforts to become worthy mediums (media). The wise and intelligent ideate less on their defects and demerits and more on the Supreme desideratum." (3)

To think over and over that, "I am a sinner - I am a sinner" is not good. This is the wrong psychology. Rather, one should entirely avoid thinking of that bad habit and directly engage the mind in higher pursuits. That is why in dharma samiiksa if anyone had committed some misdeed, Baba always first gave atonement. And then He guided their mind toward different social service activities. Only if He found that after this still people continued thinking and engaging in those same negative things, then He would feign anger and lovingly punish them for their welfare.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

According to Ananda Marga philosophy, the human mind has tremendous quality: What way the mind thinks, the whole personality can metamorphose in that direction. If a drunkard thinks only about poetry or feeding the homeless then he will become good; whereas even if an honest person thinks about his past misdeeds like stealing then that negative habit will again appear. That is why Baba has given the system of pratyaha'ra, 'offering of one's mental colors'. And this is exactly what we do in Guru Puja, so this is also one of the important practices.

AM teachings are the answer

All along, in His teaching in countless places, Baba has guided the entire society on this very point because in certain religions like Christianity they give a lot of preference to reminding people about their past sins. And most of the time that sin is unknown - what they did they do not know. This is present, in small or big form, in most of the religions. Because of this, Ananda Marga has given completely new ideas.

Baba has given the solutions to all the problems, so if ever anyone wants to solve any problem they should refer to Ananda Marga teachings.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru Baba says, “A correct spiritual ideology is the only solution to the problems confronting the world. From this perspective we can call Ananda Marga ideology the philosophers’ stone. Just as the philosophers’ stone is meant to transform everything into gold, Ananda Marga ideology can, most definitely, find a just and rational solution whenever it is applied to any problem.” (4)

Proper offering

“Prárthanárcaná mátraeva bhramamúlam.” (1)

Note: If one makes an external offering (fruit, garland, sweets etc) to Parama Purusa with the hope or expectation of getting something mundane in return, then that is the dogma of arcana. Arcana is forbidden in AM.

Whereas, when someone offers something material (fruit, garland, sweets etc) to Parama Purusa with love and affection and does not desire anything in return then it is not arcana. Rather, that is in accordance with AM teachings. And indeed, this type of offering is quite common and natural in mundane relations as well.

Tactic of religious cheats

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The vipras [religious leaders] have invented and are still inventing new ways of exploiting different communities of people in different parts of the world. In some places they have lured people with the prospect of eternal heaven, injecting into them at the same time the fear of eternal hell. By claiming the doctrine of some particular vipras [religious] leader to be the word of God, they have blocked the natural expression of the human intellect and made people intellectually bankrupt. With the intention of permanently securing for themselves an exalted position in the eyes of the ordinary people, some vipras [religious] leaders have declared themselves to be the incarnation or the appointed prophet of God. Through their own so-called scriptures, they have indirectly let the common people know that no one can achieve the same proximity to God as they – so that an inferiority complex will remain forever in the minds of the masses, and due to this inferiority complex the masses will always follow their teachings, either out of fear or out of devotion. That is why even intellectual people have fallen into their trap and have been compelled to say, Vishváse miláy vastu, tarke vahu dúr [“The goal is achieved not by reason but by faith”] or Majhab men ákl ká dakhl nahii haen [“There is no room for reason in religion”]. Entitlement: descendant of family acarya

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “With the noise of a bustling wind, people reminisce, “Oh, my grandfather accomplished this great feat… my aunt performed that marvellous work… our surname is Roychoudhury. For we were once great landlords…” Thus people always ruminate over their past and gloat over their ancestors, because they have no glorious present at all – everything is an empty void. When a community thus loses its inner wealth, then it tenaciously clings to the skeleton of its past and says, “I was this, I was that.” But they are unable to say, “I am this, I am that.” ... One must say, “Do not bother about what your ancestors have done. Why can’t you do...”” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Táttvika, ácárya, purodhá and such terms represent one’s individual ability and are not hereditary.” (2)

Note: In His above teachings, Sadguru Baba is guiding us that in our AM way of life there is no scope to stand on the coattails of one’s ancestors. Doing nothing in the present moment and gloating about past glories is not our way. Moreover, in AMPS we do not hand the post from one generation to the next on a hereditary basis. So if one’s father was a family acarya, that same title, post, glory, and respect is not automatically bestowed upon the son or daughter. In our Ananda Marga, everything is earned based on one’s conduct, not one’s birth.

The various dogmatic religions and racist approaches pass down their titles and supremacy in a very nasty way from one generation to the next. Verily, they use the   inherently exploitative tactic of one’s birth to suppress and denigrate others. This occurs with so-called whites exploiting so-called blacks, and so-called brahmins exploiting so-called shudras. Casteism and racism are based on this horrific edict ordained by sub-humans.

Birth of new nasty dogma: AMPS India

Sadly, now this same disease is rearing its ugly head in our AMPS. A few are claiming that, “Since my uncle / great-grandfather / father was a family acarya, then I am of a special birth and fit to rule over AMPS.” And others say, “My family has been in AMPS for generations, and both my grandfather and my father were family acaryas etc, so on that basis I should also be granted a great seat in AMPS.” They think AMPS belongs to them due to their ancestry, and everyone else is a guest. Even though they themselves have not done anything in this life, they feel being the grandson of a family acarya is enough for all of AMPS to fall at their feet. This type of senseless, empty banter is crowding the airwaves on some forums.

Those who are true Ananda Margiis understand well that in our AM way of life, no positions of power are granted on a hereditary basis. All are the sweet children of Parama Purusa, and one is only able to lead our AM society by their sadhana, service, sacrifice and dharmic conduct.

In Him,
Harideva

Inevitability of world government

Prout philosophy states, "With advances in technology, the mastery of human beings over space and time will continue slowly to increase, so the necessity of a world government, also, will be profoundly felt. Gradually the people in one region of the world will have to interact more with the people in various other regions, and in the course of this interaction they will have to try to understand one another better." (1)

Here Baba is teaching how in a gradual and natural course the world government will be established on this earth. And in a mundane way things are already moving in this direction. For example, there are millions of international and global organisations. Similarly, hundreds of thousands of corporations have a global administration. And in many families, their relations are working and living in multiple continents. And that is growing every moment. On a daily basis, tens of millions of people are crossing borders and traveling across the planet for various reasons. By this way, individuals, corporations, and NGO’s are already global. And this will take place in the political sphere very soon. Not only that, there is hardly any country that is not connected with another country. So there is a need. Already numerous attempts have been made at uniting various countries - in various regions of the globe. And such approaches will only increase with greater and greater success. The formation of a world government will be a natural step in this process.

How ghosts are fabricated

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In a dream, due to the dormant state of kámamaya kośa, the thought-vibrations of manomaya kośa appear real (this we call a dream when we wake up). When, due to extreme fear, stupefaction, crudity, or an excessive expression of any ripu or pásha, the kámamaya becomes temporarily suspended in the next higher kośa and the imagined objects appear real. This is also the case when a person sees various gods and goddesses. Psychologically, seeing a ghost, god or goddess is the same thing; none of them actually exist.”

“When hypnotized by someone, a person starts perceiving things as per the commands of the hypnotist. In this state, when the kámamaya is dormant a person feels that his/her imagined objects are real. Often, weak-minded people see ghosts, gods or goddesses of relatives. Such visions are auto- or outer-positive-hallucinations. Conversely, when people declare the absence of things which are actually present, it is called auto- or outer-negative-hallucination.”

“This clarifies that those who emphatically claim that they have seen ghosts are not wrong. It is due to the illusions of the negative or positive hallucinations that they see these things.”

Numerous defects of democracy

Prout philosophy states, "As a system of government, democracy cannot be accepted as the highest and best. Among all the systems human beings have been able to devise so far, democracy can be considered to be the best of a bad lot. If human beings can devise a better system in future, it will be proper to accept it wholeheartedly. Many defects in democracy have been discovered by human beings who have already started rectifying them." (1)

Query: use lottery to fund AM projects? + 6 more

Baba

Query: use lottery to fund AM projects?

Namaskar,

In the 1960's, Baba was placing a big emphasis on social service work. There was tremendous pressure to increase the number and quality of our social service projects. But, as an organisation, we lacked the requisite money to finance all these works. The projects were many, and the number of margiis was less. Our economic means were quite limited; lack of money limited what we could do.

Around that time, the Indian government started a lottery. I thought this was a very good way for us to increase our capital. My plan to purchase lottery tickets in the name of Ananda Marga, and Baba will use His mantra. By that way we will possess the winning ticket and gain huge money. Then we will be able to perform numerous social service projects. It seemed like the perfect plan. I told everyone that this was a great opportunity and that I would raise the matter with Baba to gain His approval, i.e. grace.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba rejects my plea for lottery

Soon thereafter, I was in Baba's presence and He gave me an opportunity to raise my query. I said, "Baba, the government of India has started a new lottery game, so I thought we should participate and purchase tickets. With the winnings, we could then do maximum social service."

Baba replied, No, this is very bad. True margiis will never participate in any type of lottery. It is just a waste of money. There will not be any gain. The only outcome is that people's greed will increase. This is a bad idea - never think of participating in the lottery, or indulge in gambling etc.

Sadguru Baba rejected the idea of playing the lottery. I told everyone of Baba's decision. Some were disappointed, but we were all keen in following Baba's order. True margiis will not gain or win anything if they buy a lottery ticket - only loss. By playing the lottery, the mind becomes stained and degraded. And one’s penchant for greed multiplies. As we all know, greed is an aspect of avidya maya which leads to psychic degeneration.

Takeaway: helping less, hurting more

This story gives us the guideline that as Ananda Margiis we should not engage in those activities which are detrimental for one’s own self or the general society. If a party or an institution within Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha is involved in lotteries or gambling to fund social service projects, then that will be disastrous and margiis will do the same for their personal gain. Verily, this disease and social ill of gambling will multiply. The black money earned from lotteries and gambling is harmful because it encourages this vice, and that leads to more problems in the society. For this reason, according to Ananda Marga ethical guidelines, certain jobs harmful to the collective are looked upon as lowly. No right minded person should do them, let alone Ananda Margiis.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

For example:
  • Earning money by selling drugs to contribute to a children’s home;
  • Earning money by running a lewd (sensual) call center to support a leprosy clinic;
  • Earning money by committing road robbery to build 15-story homeless centre;
  • Earning money by selling adulterated, medicines for flood relief;
  • Earning money by selling meat to help heart patients;
  • Earning money by opening a prostitution home to help victims of human trafficking;
  • Earning money by lending money at a high interest rate in order to run a free hospital.

This list of sinful jobs is very long. These activities and occupations are antithetical to Ananda Marga and they are self-defeating. On the one side you are harming society and earning money, and on the other side you are deceiving yourself that you are running a social service project like a children’s home or hospital. But this is just creating negative habits in society that are detrimental in all spheres of life. This is looked upon as abhorrent and sinful as well.

Unfortunately, in various corners of the globe similar types of despicable activities are going on in the name of funding social service projects by xyz organisations. It is so sad. Those running the show befool themselves that although they are earning money in a negative way it is alright because they are running a service project. May their mind open wherein they can realise their sin and stop that type of business.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "A temptation such as lobha (avarice) is a principle of avidyámáyá. It can only be overcome by reducing the influence of avidyámáyá through intuitional practice (sádhaná). One will never be able to keep away from temptation without overcoming the influence of avidyámáyá. This is possible only through progress in intuitional practice." (1)

And here below Baba has clearly forbidden us to engage in any kind of gambling and lotteries.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “The habit of making wagers is extremely undesirable. You must avoid lotteries and gambling.” (2)

Lottery ruins

The exploited, impoverished masses are goaded by the exploiters to purchase lottery tickets. The poor are brainwashed into thinking that by this way they will be able to overcome their poverty and become rich. And when they invariably do not win the lottery and their poverty multiplies, those impoverished people blame themselves for being unlucky. Side by side, the exploited mass believes that the rich are fortunate and that is why they have money. They do not realise that the rich have accumulated wealth by exploiting others.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The poor believe that, “Due to my misfortune and bad luck, I do not have money.” They fail to realise that their poverty is the result of systemic exploitation, low wages, and numerous other tactics implemented by the wealthy. Wherever people are dominated by the idea that the lottery is their ticket out of poverty, it is extremely difficult to raise their awareness about economic exploitation. They fail to understand that exploitation is the driving force behind their poverty because they are engrossed in the notion that they are just unlucky and if a stroke of fortune comes their way then surely they will become rich.

Lottery gives negative message & self-blame

Some lotteries are worth huge sums of money. This gives the notion that societal systems are not founded on rewarding those who work hard and gain success, i.e. meritocracy, rather it is all just due to luck. People rely on the luck of the lottery to enhance their lot in life. A distinct portion of society operates in this way. When people think that chance and good fortune - not hard work and ingenuity - are the cause of one's success or lack thereof, they have fallen into a very dangerous and harmful outlook.

As Baba has discussed in numerous discourses, when one gives way or indulges in a particular propensity, like greed etc, then that propensity increases. That is the theorem: A propensity gets stronger as it is activated. So if a person indulges in greed or anger, than that propensity or vrtti will gain a greater hold over that person. That is the way it goes.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The peculiar nature of these propensities is this: if they are given indulgence, they increase. And they easily come under control with a slight effort; only in the initial stage, one must struggle a little to control them." (3)

With regards to playing the lottery or gambling, as one thinks about winning money, then their desire increases and their greed multiplies. In turn, one will gamble more or buy more lottery tickets. One's psychic pabulum focuses more on money and in so doing the mind becomes stained - degraded. And one's penchant for greed goes on increasing. From beginning to end this is not good for sadhakas.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "A person who is greedy for money becomes totally preoccupied with the thought of making money;...." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "The mind becomes so infatuated with its crude objects that ultimately it becomes converted into matter. It follows the path of negative pratisaincara." (5)

Sadguru says, "When the tendency towards acquisition in the physical world is extremely strong, people's tendency to assimilate spiritual or intellectual things is usually noticeably weaker. In that condition, their thirst for the material world becomes very intense." (6)

Lottery: the poor loses & indulge more vices

  Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The present-day materialism has brought humanity to this predicament. Its consequences are dreadful. The irrational thirst for acquisition of material things is termed “greed”; ….. the tendency to acquire the objects of material enjoyment in ever-increasing quantities."
   "So whether in the material world or in the intellectual world, the predominant tendency that makes today's people, both individually and collectively, rush headlong without control, is the instinct of greed. The propensity of greed, if not controlled by rationality, or benevolent intellect, or spiritual practices, will lead to premature death. Nothing can save human beings from this. This instinct of greed has brought the present humanity to such a state that people no longer consider anything as sinful. Rather, they consider the “sin psychology” as a mental weakness, and the worst of sins are being glorified as the height of intellect, not only indirectly, but also openly...Lobhah pápasya hetubhútah [“Greed is the root cause of all sins”]." (7)

So greed / avarice is one of the six internal enemies and part and parcel of avidya maya. The disease behind the lottery and gambling is found in the sadripus because greed for material wealth is one of the six internal enemies. So this penchant for lottery and gambling is embedded deep within the human psyche. If this tendency or enemy of greed is encouraged it will grow and grow. It can swallow one's entire existence where a person even destroys their family and commits suicide - all due to greed.

Encouraging people to participate in lotteries and gambling is extremely dangerous - it can easily ruin their entire existence. Now that we have uncovered the root cause of the problem, we should investigate the treatment as well.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Lotteries enable the powerful politicians and wealthy shareholders to further exploit the masses because instead of demanding an end to socio-economic exploitation etc, the common people just bask in the false hope of winning the lottery and joining the ultra-rich.  Instead of pushing for social change and justice, the sedated masses avoid revolutionary approaches and sit back and play the lottery. By this maneuver of creating lotteries, political leaders maintain the status quo - they are not pressured to respond to social ills.

Conclusion

So wherever lotteries are embraced by the people, Prout can never be established. In order to propagate Prout, the first step is to open the eyes of the common mass. They have to realise the presence of exploitation and give up their bad habit and false hope of lotteries, gambling, and stocks etc. Only then will they be able to understand that capitalist economic exploitation is the cause of their poverty and suffering. Their economic woes are not because of not winning the lottery but due to  extremely low wages.

The central idea is that nobody should earn money in sinful ways and justify that, “I earned the money in a dark manner, but it is ok because I am funding this or that social service project.” One should never commit this act. That is what Baba teaches us in the above story.

Namaskar,
at His lotus feet,
Giitiishvara

The above story was recounted by a margii from Varanasi, Shrii Narendra Vikram. Hence the "I" refers to Shrii Vikram ji.

All sorts of gambling including lotteries are forbidden in Ananda Marga as it brings psychic degeneration and creates a whole host of social problems.

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. Where is it that You go

“Sabár mane rayecho gahane, gopane tháko, keno bolo?...” (Prabhat Samgiita #1845)

Purport:

O’ Lord, You are in the depths of everyone's mind. But why do You remain there secretly, please tell me. In the sound of the trees, in the horripilation of love, why do You go on dancing exuberantly?

You go on dancing from far to farther, and then You come back only to then go away again. Where is it that You go? The mirages of the desert represent Your fury. In the delight of the ocean waves, You are dancing.

O Lord, please grace me by removing this boundary line and bringing Yourself closer in front of me. In the drowsiness and laziness, with the obsession of beauty, O' Sthita Dhii, please become vibrant.

O’ Parama Purusa, You are always with everyone. It is Your blessing…

Culture & customs

Prout philosophy states, "Culture is a vague term. It is the collective name for different expressions of life. People eat, enjoy hospitality, laugh on some occasions and shed tears on others, and thereby express life through various actions. The collective name of all these actions is culture."

"According to PROUT all of society has the same culture. There are local variations in the mode or state of cultural expression, but the expression is universal. While everybody eats, some eat by hand, others by stick and still others by spoon. Indian dance is based on Mudrá or dance postures, and European dance is based on rhythm, but they do not represent two different cultures."

"Local variations will diminish if there is a close blending between different groups of people, because this will create common customs. In Nepal there is a blending of Hindu and Buddhist customs. In Bengal there is a blending of Aryan and Dravidian customs. These local variations are called customs. Thus local modes of expression bearing local or group specialities are customs, but the expression itself is culture. Therefore it is a mistake to readjust boundaries on the basis of language and culture. Indian culture and the culture of the world are one and the same." (1)

The slippery slope of tolerance

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Human beings will have to practise tolerance. But this spirit of tolerance must be developed only in individual life; in collective life it must not be expressed. If a country illegally grabs even one inch of your land you must take one mile of the aggressor’s land; no spirit of tolerance in this regard is permissible. If you show your tolerance then they will take one inch today and one mile tomorrow. However, you can practise toleration as much as possible in individual life, and that will be considered a sign of greatness." (1)

Longing for power & post is deadly

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Human beings take form according to the characteristics of their object of ideation...Those who have an ambition for power, are called raks'a. Suppose a man has grown old but still has an ambition for power. He thinks he should become this, he should become that, he thinks he should attain this status or that status. After death what shall this person become? He shall become raks'a-- that is raks'as'a." (1)

Note: Unfortunately those running after post, power, prestige status etc will ultimately become lowly microvita. As sadhakas - as well-wishers of the humanity - we should guide and teach such persons not to crave after worldly status and degenerate themselves. It is our duty to help them. We should serve them and teach them to think about Parama Purusa - and not lust after  power, prestige, social status, post etc. This should be our approach. Thus when some of our Central Dadas and others are craving for post and power we should intervene and save them from their terrible fate. They should be taught the ways of neo-humanism, otherwise they will plunge themselves into a dark future and face so many negative consequences.

Capitalism can be eradicated

"Considering the collective interests of all living beings, it is essential that capitalism be eradicated. But, what should be the proper method to achieve this end?"

"It cannot be denied that violence gives rise to violence. Then again, nothing can ensure that the application of force without violence, with the intention of rectification, will necessarily bring good results. So what should be done under such circumstances?"

"Nothing would be better, if it were possible, than the eradication of capitalism by friendly persuasion and humanistic appeals. In that case the peace of the greater human family would not be much disturbed. But can it be guaranteed that everyone will respond to this approach? Some people may say that a day will come when, as a result of repeatedly listening to such appeals and gradually imbibing them over a long time, as well as through proper mental and spiritual education, good sense will prevail among the exploiters. This argument is very pleasant to hear. Such attempts are not reprehensible. But is it practicable to wait indefinitely for good sense to prevail among the exploiters? By then the exploited mass will have given up the ghost!"

Solution to inertness

“We are proceeding from darkness towards effulgence, from imperfection along the golden steps to perfection. No obstacle on the way will be able to stop our advancement. Pushing aside and smashing all obstacles and impediments we will move along our destined path. Our ideological rationality is our valuable asset; the blissful glow of Macrocosmic effulgence is our goal and the inherent desire to bring well-being to all living creatures is our way.”

“Moving ahead is the very want of life. Wasting valuable time in lethargy is nothing but inertness; hence we must keep moving. The chant of our forward movement will be our vocal expression, the very pulsation of our life.” (Ananda Vanii #72)

Are you addicted to your phone? + 6 more

Baba
Are you addicted to your phone?

Namaskar,

Addiction comes in many forms: alcohol, cigarette / nicotine, work, drugs, gambling, painkillers, and now in this 21st century there is internet addiction disorder (IAD), social media addiction disorder (SMAD), and “nomophobia,” or the fear of being without a mobile device.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Why teenagers are prone

One of the main reasons why teenagers are especially prone to being hooked or addicted to the internet is because this is all they know. That's to say, they have grown up with the internet and do not know life without it. From the very beginning, many of their life activities and pathways have been routed through the internet. They may have fewer off-line interests than older generations. This is one reason why they are prone to IAD, SMAD, and nomophobia.

Kids jumped from the roof of their houses

Another key point is that kids and teenagers are highly impressionable. They have a tendency to confuse what is on their screen with the physical reality of life. For instance, when the Ramayana was first shown on TV in India, then there were a rash of injuries with youth. Because just as Hanuman made the great leap from India to Sri Lanka, kids also thought they could also leap. And in their childlike ways, dozens of kids jumped from the roof of their houses etc in order to be like Hanuman. Kids are that impressionable. In contrast, not one single adult attempted such a leap.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Here the point is that kids often confuse what they see on the screen with the stark reality of this world. The same problem can happen with their gaming ventures online. Young kids and early teenagers can easily start to think that what adventures and fantasies they are doing online is an accurate depiction of real life events. And the next thing you know, such kids are doing very dangerous things, like jumping off the roof of their house. So responsible parents and adults should be highly aware about IAD, SMAD, and nomophobia and how these disorders can affect their kids.

The best remedy is prevention - to control the situation ahead of time - and set up guidelines and rules for use of the internet. Otherwise, the situation can become quite messy. As margiis, as mothers and fathers, as acaryas, and as sadhakas, it is our combined and collective responsibility to bring each and every child of our Marga into a spiritually inspired way of living. All should come into our AM society and become the pillars of the future humanity, averting the dark aspects of life like IAD, SMAD, and nomophobia.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Children will become assets of society in the future to the extent that their parents or guardians discharge their duties properly." (1)

Signs of addiction

There are numerous articles about internet addiction disorder. Further information then is easily accessible. Here for your convenience is a list of some of the signature characteristics of this addiction:
1) Always in a rush to get on line / look at their phone;
2) Overlook life responsibilities (homework, house duties, appointments etc) in order to go on line;
3) Feel irritated if disturbed when using the internet;
4) Ignore relations with those around you in favour of "online friends" etc

Jute merchant suddenly died

In His Ekendriya chapter, Baba warns what will happen if one focuses on a single materialistic pursuit. If one points all their psychic energy toward one direction - and if that direction is not a spiritual one - then often that creates destruction in life.

For instance, if a person dedicates all their time and energy to making money, or doing business, or gambling, or whatever worldly desire they have, that will lead to their degeneration. Their mind will get degraded and they will become imbalanced and ultimately fall.

   Ananda Marga philosophy says, "You may know some people whose minds always run after money. You might have asked them to sit down for a while and have a chat, and been surprised by their excusing themselves, saying they were so busy and had to rush off to the stock exchange. If their pursuit of money is hampered in any way, if it eludes their grasp, if they are totally severed from it, their minds will lose their base and they will die."
   "All crude objects on which people base their hopes and aspirations will certainly disappear one day, for the nature of this relative world is “Yah a'gacchati sah gacchati” – “Whatever comes, goes.” When people are deserted by their crude objects of desire they are eaten away by frustration and disappointment, and die a miserable death."
   "I heard that once, when the currency was devalued, a wealthy jute merchant suddenly died because all the aspiration of his life were based on money. He could not face the prospect of having to part with his cherished object of desire."
   "This is ekendriya. One should concentrate one’s mind on the Supreme One to the exclusion of all mundane objects; for they can give no lasting support." (2)

If one fails to move according to the true spirit of ekendriya and instead gets derailed toward mundane desires, their future is not bright. That same ominous outcome will swallow them if they uniquely pursue any crude habit including the internet. So IAD & SMAD are indeed a scary matter for anyone involved. The addict will become a victim, in one way or another.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

They may lose their marriage or their job or their house or whatever. There are so many horror stories in this regard. I am sure we all have heard numerous stories how an addict ends up destroying their own life. This does not just happen in Hollywood and Bollywood, tragically common people also get bound in negative pursuits and degrading habits. Ultimately that addiction makes them totally blind to whatever responsibilities and obligations they have.

Way to cure

In this following teaching from the discourse 'Vya'tireka-1', Baba is guiding us that the best way to cure addicts from their negative behaviors like IAD is not to remind them directly of their addiction but to engage their mind in healthier and higher pursuits.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The best psychological cure for addicts is to put them in an environment where they will be unable to think of their object of addiction for any length of time.

But the person who thinks, "I'll stop drinking wine the day after tomorrow-no, let me see, why not tomorrow" can never kick the habit, for wine remains the mental object. The mind will  try to materialise whatever it thinks about in the external world - this is its nature." (3)

Volunteer to help others

So if a child has a computer in their room or if an adult spends all their time in their office where they have internet access, the best remedy and cure is for the addict to go places where they do not have online access and instead involve in other pursuits like music, sports, art etc. If they surf the web using a smartphone or tablet etc, then they should intentionally stay away from that device for hours at a stretch.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The mind needs to be free and ultimately goaded toward a more benevolent pursuit. One great way to overcome addiction and depression is to engage in service. One should volunteer to help others. That has a real healing effect on the person doing service. And of course others are benefited as well.

Sadhana, kiirtana, and svadhyaya are naturally ideal practices for cleaning and clearing the mind of an addiction, as the mind will get pointed toward a spiritual ideal.

Do something positive to divert

Baba has given us all the teachings in life to overcome all the negative trends and habits in society, like internet addiction disorder. We should all be vigilant and watch and care for others, especially teenagers.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "There are certain common and natural tendencies in human life. Those tendencies are of either a degenerating or an exalting nature, that is, they are either of a depraving or an elevating nature. We should encourage the elevating tendencies and discourage the depraving tendencies. In certain portions of this world, depraving tendencies...exist. Protesting will not stop or check it unless we also do something positive to check it. If we do something positive, it will create a new stir in the human mind....Depraving tendencies will be completely discouraged and checked. That will be our course of action. We have to create new literature, new books, new music, new songs...we have to create a cultural stir. These are our immediate duties. We have to chalk out a programme and act accordingly." (4)

Conclusion

While there are innumerable benefits to using the Internet, we should not let ourselves (family, community etc) get bit by the "animal" of internet addiction disorder.

What Is Phone Addiction?

~ Courtesy of Addiction Center (dot) com ~

Phone addiction is the obsessive use of a smartphone. This behavioral addiction is often dubbed as “nomophobia,” or the fear of being without a mobile device. People with a phone addiction may experience anxiety, agitation, and disorientation if they are unable to use their smartphone.

As of 2024, there are over 6.8 billion smartphone users in the world and within that population, 6.3% have a phone addiction. Research published by Virgin Mobile discovered that those billions of smartphone users receive 427% more messages and notifications than they did a decade ago. They also send 278% more texts. The rise in phone use seems like a natural necessity for modern life, however, it can also cause concern and negative consequences. The heavy use of these devices has consumers questioning their cellular habits. According to Google Trends, since 2004 searches for “cell phone addiction” have been rising. ~ In-depth study ~

As margiis and as parents, this is something for us to be well aware of. Because this stands as yet one more material indulgence that may distract one from spiritual life and even disturb or ruin one’s personal and family life. In particular, it is imperative to be vigilant that our margii children do not succumb to this.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In general, teenagers are more susceptible to IAD & SMAD; the internet has become yet another temptation for teens. So we should be aware of the telltale signs of IAD and not allow any of our young ones slip into this gigabyte abyss.

More signs of addiction

There are numerous articles about internet addiction disorder. Further information then is easily accessible.

Here for your convenience is a list of some of the signature characteristics of this addiction:
1) Always thinking of going back on line;
2) Secretive about what online activities and pursuits;
3) Lose sight of reality, i.e. confusing fictional aspects of online experiences such as gaming etc with the reality of living in this world. (Note: Teenagers are particularly prone in this regard.)
4) Sad or depressed when not online, only to "recover" when back online;
5) Say you will be off in 15 minutes, but stay on line for hours and hours longer;
6) Skip meals and lose sleep because of excessive time on-line;
7) Verbally accost or even physically attack those who object to their internet habits;
8) Cannot survive without it - "gotta have it"; do everything and anything to be on line;
9) Leads to other negative behaviours including crime and unlawful activities etc;
10) And there are a plethora of other signs to watch for. So if you suspect one of your near and dear ones is suffering from IAD, please investigate the matter thoroughly.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

These are some of the more common lifestyle presentations of IAD & SMAD. It is important to note that one need not have all the above characteristics in order to be suffering from IAD. There are degrees of addiction.

There are certain genres of sites that are more prone to addictive behaviours. This has been well-documented in various reports. Often such sites appeal to one's lower propensities and baser tendencies of mind. That is how they lure large audiences to their sites. So we should all be alert about this.

Remedy: goad mind away

One other important point to be aware of is that Baba tells us not to think about past misdeeds. We should forget about them and point the mind in a positive direction. That is why He has designed human beings to have both eyes in the front: To look forward and march towards the Goal, Parama Purusa. Thinking about past negative events only causes those degrading thoughts to recur.

One should not think about their weakness or degrading habit / addiction otherwise that will rise up in the mind again and again. To overcome any negative habit, one should goad the mind towards higher pursuits. That is why in dharma samiiksa if anyone committed any wrong then always Baba first gave atonement. And then guided their mind toward different social service activities. Only if He found that after this still a person was involved in those same negative things, then He would feign anger to help them overcome that problem.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

According to Ananda Marga philosophy, the human mind has tremendous quality: What way the mind thinks, the whole personality can metamorphose in that direction. And this theory should be applied in practical life when overcoming any addiction.

Lowly samadhi common nowadays

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Persons who are self-centered (Khuda parasta), don't have Paramatman as their goal, but something else. Outwardly they say that Paramatman should be obtained but in their inner mind they have the desire for something else. Such people who outwardly say that Paramatman should be obtained but in the inner mind they desire for fame, riches, have the crude object as their goal. Whatever the inner mind says is the goal of the Jiiva (microcosm). Whatever is the feeling in the external mind is not the goal. But in the inner mind, because of his goal being the crude object his ultimate achievement is known as Prakrtiliina. Prakrti means the phenomenal world. Their existence will be transformed into the phenomenal world i.e. the conscious man gets transformed into crude object. There is one more word for the Samadhi in the Prakrta Shakti and that is Jada Samadhi. Jada Samadhi is very much below human existence and to be free from that is also very difficult. After crores of years there will be human life. Just see how dangerous it is! So with Parama Puruśa, don't have two personalities, inside something and outside something else. Become the same as you are within. Entire mental structure, entire ectoplasmic stuff will be converted into the quinquelemental world." (1)

Note: Unfortunately, these days under the negative influence of capitalism, human beings have degenerated to the level of animals in that they are equally self-centered, living only for themselves, and not caring about others. In (a) capitalist countries and (b) metropolitan cities around the globe, this problem is prevalent. People are so self-centered that they never care about others - not even their own offspring. Such selfish people are worse than animals. This entire scene is the negative outcome of capitalism, which itself converts humans into beggars and beasts. Their selfish mentality is the root cause of all the problems. In the end they will be metamorphosed into crude objects.

Sadhana: basis for service

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "You have to bring about your own spiritual salvation. If one does not try for one's own salvation, if one does not do spiritual practice, one can never serve society. It will be totally impossible." (1)

Note: There are a few who think that any type of mundane social activist, who is not even God-oriented, can be an ideal Prout leader. Some get enamoured with the popularity and tall talks of some so-called orators. In their naïveté they think that the person at the podium can bring lead society forward and establish Prout etc.

However, in Baba's above teaching, He clearly guides us that only those deeply involved in sadhana and equipped with the force of spirituality can provide the soothing balm to the exploited humanity. Without spirituality one can never render true service to society. Hence being on the path of sadhana is an essential requisite for serving the world.

Ceiling on bank balances

Prout philosophy states, “One pertinent question is whether both a ceiling on landed property and a ceiling on bank balances have to be imposed. It goes without saying that both methods have to be adopted, but the latter should precede the former. This will bring immediate cash to the government to help establish new industries on the one hand, and it will check the growth of capitalism on the other. By enforcing land ceilings no direct benefit can be expected to accrue to the nation because the available arable land will not be increased, nor will production be increased, since it is not the function of the government to cultivate land. Such an approach would wound the public sentiment and the public would think that the state had replaced the Zamindars. In the face of food shortages it is not advisable to change land policies immediately.” (1)

Qualification of True Writers

Those who fight against injustice should have this quality:

[If none to my call pays heed,
Then alone must I proceed.]

"Keeping this refrain in mind, they [writers] must continue in their relentless effort to fight against the seemingly indomitable might of hundreds and thousands of obstacles which are deeply rooted in age-old superstitions that are firmly entrenched in petty selfishness. Their pens may break into pieces, their brushes may be compelled to draw only lines of water on the canvas, and their histrionic flows may end in mute protests, yet their efforts must continue unceasingly.
