Parents choose name of newborn + 3 more

Baba

Parents choose name of newborn

Namaskar,

In our Ananda Marga way of life, we spiritualize each and every aspect of our existence - from birth to death: That includes selecting the name of the newborn.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The Naming of and First Feeding of Solid Food to an Infant: When an infant is six months old (or any time between six months and one year of age), at least five members of Ananda Marga will gather together on a convenient day, and the infant will be laid before them. The a'ca'rya/a'...will recite the following verse first..." (1)

In His above guideline, Baba is describing the baby naming ceremony (ja'takarma). A key point is that Wts / acaryas should offer or suggest multiple Saḿskrta names for the baby, along with the meaning, whereby the guardians or parents can select which one they like best. This should be done in a convenient manner in the months or weeks or days before the baby naming ceremony. But the main thing is that the final selection of the baby's name is done by the parents / guardians. The acarya's duty is to provide them with a proper selection of names, accompanied by the meaning.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Should give the family a selection of names

Unfortunately, nowadays, it is quite common for the acarya or Wt to select only one name. And that single name is then presented to the family, with or without the meaning. In that case, the margii parents often feel obligated or compelled to accept that name - and they may not even know what it means. Yet, Baba's guideline is that the immediate family members should always be able to choose a name they like best - based on the suggestions of their acarya. Baba has given a detailed, dynamic system whereby many different names are appropriate for any baby - depending upon the day and time of the child's birth. So there are several options and those acaryas adhering to the system present a wide array of names to the family. Then the family can select the name they prefer.

In contrast, those Wts who are unaware of Baba's system might try and impose one single name as if the acarya's choice is the only option for naming the child. Intentionally or not, the acarya should not take it upon themselves to make the final selection about the name. Those who are reasonable and rational acaryas will always give the family a choice of several names. Throughout that process, the acarya should clearly explain the meaning of the name(s) to the parents so an educated decision can be made by the family. Then the parents will be more inclined to use that name in their day to day life and encourage the child to do the same.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "The Saḿskrta name should be used in all worldly dealings." (2)

The Saḿskrta name given at the time of birth should be what the child is called on a day to day basis. The Saḿskrta name should not be shelved or put in storage, wherein the child is called some silly, worldly nickname instead. This is not the Ananda Marga system. Baba wants the selected Saḿskrta name to be used. And that is most likely to happen when a family fully understands the meaning of that name and its spiritual significance and selects that name for their child. Best is when the Saḿskrta name is highly spiritual in nature and pervasively used in our Ananda Marga scriptures.

Examples of baby naming gone astray

Nowadays, in some aspects of Indian society, it has become the fashion amongst a small percentage of the population to use rare and obscure Samskrta words, and even made-up words as names. But these names are often devoid of any real spiritual meaning. They might select mundane Saḿskrta words meaning bird, chili (as in spicy pepper), seller etc. This is the trend in various states like Gujurat and other places. With the spread of materialism, this bogus approach is on the rise.

In a different section of society, some educated people select rare Saḿskrta words for names - regardless of what the word means. Their intention is to give the baby a unique name which is completely different like Hasanti, meaning laughing or smiling. This is an example of a Saḿskrta verb used as a name. Naming a child Hasanti is highly unusual. It would be similar to an American or westerner naming their child giggling. In our Ananda Marga system, names should be a proper noun with a spiritual meaning.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In certain villages some uneducated people give Saḿskrta names based on plants, spices, or grains etc. And in other places they use names based on dogmatic, mythical gods and goddesses. But again this is approved by Sadguru Baba. The Samskrta names in our Ananda Marga system should be based in bhakti and carry a spiritual meaning - not something mundane or dogmatic. In Bengal they pronounce the words and names differently and thereby distort the original Saḿskrta names. They change Vishvadeva to Bishbadeba, and vivek to bibek, and sanatan to Shanatan. In short they turn v's into b's and the letter "s" into "sh'.

Why the suffix “das” should not be used

Still in other places, they append "das" to their name such as Ram Das, Kabir Das, Krsna Das, Bhagavan Das, Shiva Das etc. In this case, Das is not their family name, but rather an optional name. Often people choose the name of gods and goddess and then add -das. But Das itself means "slave." In our Ananda Marga no one is anybody's slave; hence, Baba has specifically told that the -das suffix should not be used. Rather the suffix deva (devii for females) should be used, as deva means divine.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "The word deva should be suffixed to the name...the more the usage of deva as a title, the better it is." (3)

Finally, a name should not just be some sound like in western nations - i.e. sounds that have no meaning like Iko or Keedo.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Calculate using tantric calendar - not western calendar

The day of birth (i.e. Mon, Tues, Wed etc) is key in selecting the correct Saḿskrta name. In our Ananda Marga baby-naming system, we follow the tantric calendar. According to the tantric calendar, the new day begins at sunrise and continues until the next sunrise. This is in stark contrast to the western calendar where the new day starts at midnight. This can lead to a lot of confusion if one is not careful.

For instance, suppose a baby is born before sunrise at 4am on Wednesday. But according to our tantric calendar the baby was born on Tuesday because in the tantric calendar it is still Tuesday.

If by mistake an acarya assigns the baby a name based on Wednesday, then the name for the baby will be entirely wrong. That miscalculation completely changes the baby’s name which will ultimately affect which Ista mantra that child gets when it is initiated into tantra sadhana. The entire course of that child’s spiritual existence is flawed. All because at the time of birth they got the wrong day because they followed the western calendar and not the tantric calendar.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The below rules should be kept in mind:

1. From sunrise until midnight, the day will be the same whether one is referring to the western or tantric calendar.
2. The key difference will be during the hours of midnight and sunrise.
3. So every margii family should be vigilant about the time of the birth and use the tantric system for determining the day of the week.

Alert: The main alertness that is needed is when the baby is born between midnight and sunrise.
  • For example: a baby is born at 2:30am on Sunday morning of the western calendar.
  • Because 2:30am is before sunrise so in the tantric calendar it is still Saturday. So it will be declared that the baby was born at 2:30am on Saturday night.
  • The selection of names for the baby should be based on the tantric calendar, not the western calendar.
  • Every margii family and Wt should be aware about this.

This problem is no problem if everything is working smoothly. Because it is the duty of acaryas to know the proper system and calculate the birth according to the tantric system and then decide the name on that basis. Unfortunately, most of our acaryas are busy in social service and business activities, and they do not have time to read their acarya guidebooks. It is similar to a doctor who has passed his medical examinations, but is just busy selling clothes on the streets all day. Then how can he resolve your medical issues. Bear in mind there are some acaryas who are well versed on these matters. So surely they always present and offer the right names for the newborn. To find that type of acarya you need a special torch.

Baby & paincajanya dogma

Baba says the name of the newborn should be calculated based on the tantrika calendar wherein the new day starts at sunrise. Using this system to determine the proper day, the baby naming will be cent-per-cent accurate.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately, there is a misnomer floating around these days. Be aware: When selecting a name for the newborn, some Wts use paincajanya to figure out the day the baby was born. This especially happens in India. But this is absolutely wrong and can lead to choosing the wrong name for the baby. Remember, in some parts of India the sun rises before paincajanya, and in other parts of India the sun rises after paincajanya. So it is wrong to rely on paincajanya for the naming of the baby. Baba’s guideline is very clear: The name of the newborn should be given based on the tantrika calendar wherein the new day starts at sunrise. Then the baby naming will be cent-per-cent accurate.

Ananda Marga ideology guides, “One day in India means sunrise to sunrise. One day in Europe means midnight to midnight. In Europe, the date changes just after midnight, and, in India, the date changes after sunrise.” (4)

Conclusion

The aforementioned circumstances are cases of the baby naming process gone awry. Most are not falling prey to these trends - yet we should all be aware of what is going on and be vigilant to follow the gold-bar standard of Ananda Marga teachings. The name selected for the newborn should be a Saḿskrta name imbibed with a spiritual cum divine meaning. And the parents should have the final say on the selection of the name based on a list of appropriate options presented to them by the acarya.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Depending upon exactly when the baby is born, an entire range of names is available. The exact timing of the birth is also a key aspect in our Ananda Marga system for selecting a name. All in all, the Ananda Marga baby naming system is complete and offers a wide array of selections. So no family should ever think that they have to accept any particular name. Rather they should have a choice from dozens of options given to them by an acarya.

Nobody should feel stuck; if any particular acarya is not being helpful then simply seek help from a different WT or family acarya - or even a senior margii. And the family should make the final selection based on those highly spiritual, Saḿskrta names.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Brahmajyotidhara’

Why baby cries or laughs without any reason?

When an infant is small they do not feel connected with this world. Their nerves are not developed and their thoughts are mostly related with the memories of their past lives. Baba has described this in an in-depth manner in His discourse: "Cerebral and Extra Cerebral Memory."

Baba tells us that sometimes when an infant of a few months closes its eyes and smiles - and there appears to be no external cause for that smile - the baby is recalling a memory from its past life. Likewise, sometimes a baby is crying and parents cannot figure out what is wrong, then in that circumstance the baby may just be reliving a painful memory from its past life. Similarly, sometimes a toddler says something that appears to be nonsensical to the parents, in that case the young kid may be recalling a scene from its previous life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Here the point is that up to the age of 5 or so, babies and young kids are not well adjusted with this present world. A newborn needs to be given a name so it has an identity related with its present life. If it does not receive a name in a timely manner, then there is the possibility for a dual-personality to develop. That means although the baby has a new body its mind is more preoccupied with past life experiences.  The child associates more with its past life. If in the past the baby was named Krsna and in this life it has yet to receive a name, then the baby may identify itself more with its previous birth as Krsna. Whereas if the baby quickly receives a name - like Ranjan - for its present life, then the baby will identify more with its present birth. That is why Baba recommends that a name be given within 6 months to help develop a new personality for that new-born. And the baby should be called by that Samskrta name.

About Rgveda

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Although the Rgveda is mainly concerned with hymns, it also contains various tales and anecdotes. While not all of these stories and tales carry equal spiritual value, they are representative of the cultural heritage of those ancient humans. They paint a portrait of the gradual advancement of human thinking and the structure of society. When considered from this point of view, the language, literature and expression of the Rgveda is of special value to the world." (1)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “We can roughly say that civilization first started sprouting after the prehistoric age of the human race, that is, from the days of the first composition of the Rk Veda, about 15,000 years ago. A major change took place during the days of Lord Shiva towards the end of the Rk Vedian period (which lasted 10,000 years). (2)

How imaginary gods and goddesses are created

In India, this is the typical way in which imaginary gods and goddesses are created. When the masses are not well-educated, they are prone to superstition. And when superstition sprouts, imaginary gods and goddesses are created to resolve the issues and problems of the common people. This is the classic formula. All such imaginary gods and goddesses were created in this way: Durga, Sarasvati, Vishnu, Laksmii, Ram, Ganesh, Hanuman, Kali, Surya, Jagannath, etc.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In many cases people are devoted to upadevatás out of fear and sometimes they are worshipped in the hopes of obtaining something. Banabibi [The Lady of the Forest] is there to save one from the grasp of the tiger. Besides her, there is Dakśińa Ráya; out of fear of cholera people worship Olái Cańd́ii; out of fear of smallpox they worship Shiitaládevii; out of fear of snakes, Manasá. These are all upadevatás. The women of a household will sometimes worship Lakśmii year-round to bring happiness in the family; Śet́erá as well as Suvacanii is worshipped in the ritual peace ceremony; Śaśt́hii and Niila are worshipped to bring welfare to one's children; and out of fear of illness Shmashánkálii and Rakśekálii are worshipped. In Sanskrit they are all classified as upadevatás because they are not Parama Puruśa, the object of meditation in the spiritual world. Besides these, there are many other upadevatás such as Mangalacańd́ii, Áshánbibi, Satyapiira, etc. Upadevatás are also called folk [laokik] gods and goddesses. Some of them have dhyána mantras and some do not; some of them also have dhyána mantras in the local or state language and some do not have that either. In many cases the gods and goddesses of the Buddhist and Jain eras came or are coming to be worshipped as upadevatás in the post-Buddhist and post-Jain eras. Those spiritual aspirants who follow the paths of knowledge, action and devotion, of course, do not bow their heads to upadevatás. They practise the sádhaná of the singular Parama Puruśa."
"Some people call ghosts upadevatás out of excessive fear, that is, they accept them as minor gods and goddesses lest they be angered by being called ghosts. In Sanskrit, however, the word upadevatá is not used to mean “ghost” – for ghosts the word apadevatá is used. Upa means “near” and apa means “just opposite”. Apadevatá means “one whose nature is just opposite to that of a god”." (1)

Father’s Day? + 2 more

Baba
Father’s Day?

Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

Parents have a very big responsibility for their children. They have to care for the physical, mental, and spiritual development of their progeny and nourish them to grow in an all-round way - in three spheres. This is their parental duty. Devoid of this, the relation will not be treated as ideal. Especially for those parents who care only for the physical aspect, or only the physical and psychic development - and do not care about spiritual development of their progeny. Such parents cannot be looked upon as ideal guardians of their children.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Fragile, aged parents live frustrated, depressed life

Unfortunately, these days in materialistic countries some guardians and parents are not properly fulfilling their duty towards their progeny. In response, their progeny do not feel any obligation towards their parents or family. A percentage of the population falls in this category. So ultimately both progeny and parents reached a compromise. They decided that at least once in a year they will celebrate a particular day as Father's Day and a single day for Mother's Day etc. In this way their selfish interest became satisfied. Because one day is much easier than having to fulfill one’s duty on an ongoing, daily basis.

In an ideal society, it is the regular duty of the progeny to look after their parents; and, certainly, the parents are to look after their progeny. Now, however, some are obsessed with the self-centered philosophy of materialism. They have forgotten their respective roles - parents and their progeny. This is especially evident in materialistic countries. Children in their teenage years often leave the house to live elsewhere, and elderly parents are pushed away and neglected in their old age. Fragile parents are sent to retirement centers where they live a frustrated, depressed, and institutionalized existence. So on one side the children are suffering and on the other side the parents / elders are suffering.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

This self-centered philosophy or capitalistic bent of mind led to the birth of the Mother's Day / Father’s Day dogma and they feel satisfied: "Alright - one day will be Father's Day and one day will be Mother's Day. And then all my duties are over until next year."

Devious ploy of capitalists: dogma of Father's Day

Both "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" were started by capitalists. Such capitalists want to sell their goods - for one or another reason. And they exploit the common people in a very indirect and cunning way. Businesses create the psychic hunger in the customer's mind that, "You need these products". Capitalists do this with even the most unnecessary items. In response, the innocent public feels that, "Yes it is very essential for me to have those things. I must purchase them." By this way, capitalists empty the pockets of the unassuming masses.

So the false holidays of Father's Day and Mother's Day are the capitalists' selfish inventions. The sole aim is for the common people to run out to the stores and buy more products - i.e. special commercially produced items to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day. Here is Baba's guideline from His Prout discourse about economy and psycho-economy:

Prout philosophy states, "Capitalists, in their singular or collective roles, exploit society through their gigantic propaganda machinery, and create unhealthy, artificial demands which not only poison the mind but encourage dangerous habits detrimental to psychic sanctity and expansion." (1)

This type of mentality is the cause of the invention of this relatively new dogma, Father's Day and Mother's Day. Because, in this way, capitalists get a huge benefit. And although it started in the western materialistic areas, now it is spreading step by step around the globe and the so-called third world countries strive to emulate so-called first-world states. So the disease of this capitalistic venture is being passed on to other places around the globe.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga: sacred duty towards parents

As Ananda Margiis we aim to live according to the tantric vision where motherhood and fatherhood are honoured and respected. This intimate relation is maintained every moment due to ongoing love, care, and commitment. Only those who have a lesser degree of love between parent and child can embrace the yearly Mother's Day and Father's Day programs. We are to stand true to His tantric system and fully embrace our roles as mother and father, and not get pulled into the degrading ocean of materialistic values, where Mother's Day and Father's Day reign.

Great responsibility

Keeping this ideal in the forefront of one's mind, no one will get frustrated reading this letter. The aim is not to go against anyone's sentiment, nor attack anyone emotionally. Rather, our goal as Ananda Margiis is to uphold the flag of tantra. In certain of our materialistic countries the annual "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" celebrations are going on in regular fashion. This year, so-called Mother's Day was on Sunday, 10 May, and Father's Day will be held on Sunday, 21 June -- though this may vary from country to country.

At first glance, it may seem like "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" are noble enterprises. But, upon further examination, we can see how they are the product of materialism / capitalism. So we should apply our vivek.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Every sadhaka has great responsibility toward their parents. According to Ananda Marga ideology, one’s duty towards their parents is quite clear. And the responsibility parents have for their children is of a similar nature. Ananda Marga has been given to build up one human society, and in that human society one healthy family is a key component. In that healthy family, all direct worldly relations should live together. That is one miniature form of society. In their happiness and sorrow, they will move collectively towards one goal - Parama Purusa. On that basis, Baba has made the aforementioned Caryacarya rule where every sadhaka has great responsibility toward their parents.

Conclusion

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Four kinds of debt are irredeemable – debt to father, debt to mother, debt to ácárya, and debt to guru (divine debt)....But however much service one renders, one will not redeem the four debts until Moks'a (salvation) is attained.” (2)

The central idea is that when something is not given importance on an everyday basis then a weekly, monthly, or yearly program is fixed. Just like everyday is not a holiday in government offices, so they take rest on Saturday and Sunday.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

But for things done on a regular or daily basis, then no special day is allotted for those engagements. Because they are performed day-in, day-out. In a similar way, those things which occur on a monthly basis are not also celebrated on a yearly basis. Rather, every month certain days are fixed. And for festivals that come once in a year then a yearly date is made. But service to mother and father is a regular daily affair.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Rainjita'

~ In-depth study ~

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The human body develops over the course of some months in the mother's womb. Then after birth it continues to develop up until approximately the age of thirty-nine (in tropical countries)." (3)

Special bond between mother & child

We should embrace the tantric ideal of motherhood and think of the great bond that develops between mother and child. Firstly, the mother advances through pregnancy and nurtures the baby as her own, while in the womb. During the 40-week pregnancy, a mother develops tremendous emotional attachment and love for the child. With childbirth, the mother takes on the maternal responsibility of caring for the helpless babe each and every moment. As the babe grows through childhood, the mother is there every step of the way offering love, help, support, and care.

Indeed, a mother has an inherent and innate bond with her child. She always does her best for the child's well-being. Mothers always sacrifice for their children. And the child in turn feels an unmatched closeness with its mother. That is why when a child is emotionally hurt, or confused, it is the mother he goes to for answers. The child has implicit trust and faith in its mother, and the mother has a deep emotional link for her child.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

A mother will do everything in her power to raise her child in the best possible way. No mother would ever neglect her child. Such is the bond. Even when the child has reached into young adulthood and a veritable adult, still the mother cares for and watches over her "child." Verily, there is a deeply intimate link between mother and child – and motherhood is honoured as one of the revered roles in life.

Baba did not call them mother

It is Baba's policy to never go against anyone's psychology, hence during His marriage blessings He would always speak to the newlywed couple in a particular manner. When the newly married husband and wife would come up onto the stage for His marriage blessing during DMC, then they would always offer a garland to Baba.

Baba would then give His blessing and return the garland back to the wife.

During this sweet and charming interaction, if the newlywed wife was Indian then Baba would address her as mother and say, "Take this mala mother and keep it with you...". In contrast, if the newlywed wife was not Indian then Baba would address her as “little girl” and say, "Take this mala little girl and keep it with you...".

Baba took this approach with thousands of newlyweds during hundreds of DMC's. Here the point is that Baba understood that some of the newly married wives from western countries etc, did not like to be called mother. So He called them "little girl". Actually, in materialistic places, even older women do not like to be called mother, while in those tantric cultures, even little girls are addressed as maa or mother.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Very often a doting father will take his little daughter on his lap and call her “mother”. But everyone knows that the child is his daughter, not his mother." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In the Vajraya'na Buddhist age, the idea first developed that the basic identity of a woman was neither “sister” nor “daughter” but “mother”. To support this concept, the Vajraya'na Buddhist Tantrics used to say that the person whom the newborn baby notices immediately after its birth is neither its sister, its wife nor its daughter, but its mother. So that on the wider canvas of this universe the identity of a woman, from first to last, was portrayed as a mother. She first appears as a young mother to a newborn and later when she attains maturity in life, she establishes her identity as the [grand] mother [of a large household]." (5)

Capitalists’ tool of psycho-economic exploitation

Psycho-economic exploitation is the latest form of dangerous and all-devouring capitalist exploitation. It is a special type of exploitation which first weakens and paralyses people psychologically in various ways, and then exploits them economically. Some of the methods of psycho-economic exploitation include, first, the suppression of the indigenous language and culture of local people; secondly, the extensive propagation of pseudo-culture, exemplified by pornographic literature which debases people’s mind and particularly undermines the vitality of the youth; thirdly, the imposition of numerous restrictions on women, forcing them to be economically dependent on men; fourthly, an unpsychological education system with frequent political interference by vested interests; fifthly, the negation of dharma in the name of secularism; sixthly, the balkanization of society into numerous castes and groups; seventhly, the damaging of society by the use of unnatural and harmful methods of birth control; and eighthly, placing the control of different mass media, such as newspapers, radio and television, in the hands of capitalists. Both intellectual exploitation and psycho-economic exploitation are great dangers to the human race today.” (6)

Your mercy

"Áj tomáy pelum, notun sáje mor mano májhe..." (Prabhat Samgiita #0886)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, by Your causeless grace, today I have gotten You in a new form of exquisite beauty - in a more loving way in Guru cakra. I have a more intimate relation now in dhya'na, and all the 24 hrs. It is Your krpa’. Earlier my mind was busy and involved in a variety of degenerating deeds - mostly negative actions. But now there are no such distractions. My mind is one-pointed and only ensconced in Your exquisite bhakti, by Your sweet will.

Baba, in the past I was treading upon a dirty zig-zag path, day and night, which was shrouded in pitch-black darkness, leading to hell. It was the path of indulgence and pseudo-culture. There was no hope or relief. My life was covered in the soot of charcoal, all the time. By the attraction of Your endless prema, I looked towards You. My Dearmost, my most loving One, by having a glance of You, the wheels of my chariot turned around and started heading on the path of dharma. In my dead river of bhakti, a flood has come. Now it is overflowing with a sparkling, sublime, current of fresh water of supreme love. Now my life has become refulgent. It is all due to Your mercy.

Baba, in those days before coming to the path of sadhana, all around me there was darkness and misery. There was coal-blackness, and after that there was even more murkiness. The whole atmosphere was pitch dark. And beyond that Cimmerian blackness there was extra thick soot leading to hell. This was the path of pseudo-culture and the underworld. My whole life was shrouded in depression. That very time, with great empathy, You came with Your beautiful brilliance. As far as I could see, everywhere it was full of refulgence. I feel the boundlessness of Your infinite and sweet presence. You have inundated my mind and soul with bliss. In whichever direction I look, everything is saturated with a’nandam. The atmosphere is filled with Your boundless compassion. You won over my mind and filled my life with Your eternal blessings. I feel Your special proximity in my heart. Baba, You have captivated me, stolen my mind, and filled my core with Your love - para’bhakti...

Medicine for current AMPS

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Today human beings, to whatever country they may belong, should, on the one side, propagate an anti-exploitation sentiment (exploitation does not mean exploitation in the economic sphere only, it includes all sorts of exploitation), and form strong nations in their respective countries; and, on the other side, preach the theory of one spiritual inheritance – that every living being is the child of the Supreme Entity, and that all the people of all nations belong to the same family. This will have to be explained to all, that there will be clash among different nations as long as national feelings exist. People may talk of disarmament, but military preparation will go on underground. And if people dedicate themselves to the welfare of the entire human race, their respective nations will also be benefited indirectly because their nations are not outside the universe! Along with the theory of spiritual inheritance, one Cosmic ideology will have to be propagated too, and that ideology is that one Supreme Entity – the Cosmic Entity – is the goal of all living beings. This spiritual sentiment will keep human beings united for all time to come. No other theory can save the human race.” (1)

Sadvipra recipe

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "It is meaningless to impart diikśá under five years of age, since at this stage the nerve cells of a human child are undeveloped. Consequently, at age of five, there is no disposition or propensity for intricate types of spiritual practices. But, in absences of initiation of five years of age, there is apprehension of the child going astray. Verily, all the human vices are acquired during the age of five to fifteen years. The child has a great inclination to imitate. It hears abusive words and learns them. The robbers sons turn to be robbers only on account of environmental influence. For this reason, if the child be initiated on attaining five years of age, it can develop into a perfect human being – it will be a perfect man." (1)

An issue for 7000 years

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The Sanskrit equivalent for marriage is viváha (vi – vah + ghaiṋ): it means, after the ceremony, the man and woman can no longer live as libertines or as irresponsible so-called family people. They have to discharge their full obligations as bharttá and kalatra, responsible husband and responsible wife.”

“Another Sanskrit equivalent for “woman” is nárii, which is feminine gender. But Shiva used the term kalatra, in the neuter; for to her husband a woman is a wife, but to her children and other members of the society, she is as dignified as her male counterpart. So by declaring a married lady to be kalatra, Shiva gave her special status, and addressed her in neuter terms.”

“The liberal meaning of the term viváha is “live one’s life in a new way with a special type of responsibility”. This is the underlying significance of the Shaeva system of marriage.”

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In His life, Shiva Himself married with this commitment. We can say without the least hesitation that Shiva was the first person in this world to marry in the proper sense of the term..” (1)

Note: That which was common 7000 years ago has now again come into vogue: That same disease has become prevalent today. A huge percentage of people around the globe are leading libertine life - especially in the materialistic areas. They produce children and neglect to take any responsibility. They do not like to be bound in conjugal relations and shoulder the responsibility of helping the child. The ones who suffer the most are the children and the mother. Often such children wind up in foster care - mentally and physically scarred. It is a serious crisis - watch out. Where capitalism is growing that disease will spread. Our duty is to propagate this teaching - if we bring even one libertine onto the path of responsibility then at least to some small degree the problem is solved.

How to surmount any weakness + 4 more

Baba
How to surmount any weakness

Namaskar,

Getting stuck in harmful habits is a common problem these days, but especially so with teenagers because they are more impressionable. They are more prone and susceptible to falling prey to the negative aspects of their surroundings. Especially nowadays when our youths are hounded 24/7 by savvy business marketing teams. Those advertising professionals are constantly trying to allure and tempt our youths.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

When we think about what most affects a person's development, generally speaking, the formula is, "If one's company is good then people are involved in good works; but, if one's company is bad then the tendency is to get caught up in bad habits." Since the present social environment is filled with so many degenerative behaviors, many get adversely affected. And it is especially the youths who get allured.

When many houses are infested all get affected

In this circumstance, parents, family members, and friends may not know exactly how to solve the problem. When the problem is not checked, it mushrooms into a veritable crisis. And the root cause is exposure to negative vices, degrading tendencies, and harmful addictions etc. For instance, petty thievery, if not checked, may escalate into large-scale robberies and larceny; and, without any intervention, watching degraded films might also lead to more debased dealings.

That is why Baba's direction is that at the earliest possible moment a proper human society should be formed. Because if only a single house is clean, and all the surrounding houses are dirty and filled with flies, then the foul smell from those flea-infested houses will certainly envelop the clean house also. Given the current climate of degrading materialism, it is our duty to help our youths, and one and all. We should guide them and goad their minds in the proper direction.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Solution: goad mind towards sentient engagements

To solve this problem of negative habits and addictive behaviours, Baba's teaching is to channelise and engage the mind in positive activities. Trying to solve the problem by inviting the patient to watch pseudo-culture movies or adopting "less negative habits" like cigarette smoking in the place of narcotics will not suffice. That will only create more temptation and further depravity. The best approach is to engage people in positive, sentient endeavours like music, art, discussion forums, sports, and healthy competitions in social service. These types of activities will help youths, and all people, break the downward spiral of depravity, and lead them in a healthy, more refined direction.

Baba also guides us that if a person does sadhana then a positive result will arrive more quickly. Even inborn criminals can be wholly transformed with the help of sadhana and asanas. By following Baba's guidelines, everyone will get the opportunity to progress rapidly and steer clear from negative habits and other weaknesses.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In this following teaching from the discourse 'Vya'tireka-1', Baba is guiding us that the best way to cure addicts from their negative behaviors is not to remind them directly of their addiction but to engage their mind in healthier and higher pursuits.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The best psychological cure for addicts is to put them in an environment where they will be unable to think of their object of addiction for any length of time. To proclaim, "Don't do this, it's bad," is futile, for it is a negative approach. If you say, "Don't drink wine", you are still injecting the concept of wine into the alcoholic's mind, thus making it impossible for him to forget it and kick (quit) his bad habits. You are giving alcohol negative publicity, and it again becomes his mental object. Thus whenever he gets the opportunity he will certainly drink it again. And it may be that this negative approach encourages the alcoholic to become even more addicted. It is a defective approach."
"These days the sign "No smoking please" is placed in many public places, but it will not reduce the amount of smoking. If society wants people to stop smoking, its approach should be to divert the smoker's mind to other objects. A chain smoker should be encouraged to get involved in various pursuits such as music, dance, songs, culture of fine arts, etc., for if the mind remains engaged in these things it will forget its object of addiction. But the person who thinks, "I'll stop drinking wine the day after tomorrow-- no, let me see, why not tomorrow", can never kick the habit, for wine remains the mental object. The mind will try to materialise whatever it thinks about in the external world - this is its nature." (1)

Conclusion

Negative habits and tendencies should be replaced by positive ones. A person should not try to simply decrease the bad habit, rather that degrading tendency should be wholly exchanged for a sentient engagement. And the way to achieve this is by goading the mind towards uplifting pursuits that refine the mind. By this way, we will be able to help many who have gotten stuck in a rut of degrading materialistic tendencies, especially our youths.

~ In-depth study ~

Step by step: animal to human

Animal tendencies are still dominant in many people as all have come from animal life. That is why most human beings easily get attracted to negative allurements. It does not need any special training or practice to plunge into degrading behaviours. You will not find many educational institutions that teach people how to rob, or cheat, or deceive, or how to drink wine, and use illicit drugs etc. People need not be taught those things as it is a natural tendency to lean towards degeneration. So in this condition it is the duty of those who have a more developed mind to help others progress.

Here below Baba shows how we may overcome various social ills and guide people along the path of welfare.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "There are certain common and natural tendencies in human life. Those tendencies are of either a degenerating or an exalting nature, that is, they are either of a depraving or an elevating nature. We should encourage the elevating tendencies and discourage the depraving tendencies. In certain portions of this world, depraving tendencies such as … exist. Protesting will not stop or check it unless we also do something positive to check it. If we do something positive, it will create a new stir in the human mind. … and other depraving tendencies will be completely discouraged and checked. That will be our course of action. We have to create new literature, new books, new music, new songs...we have to create a cultural stir. These are our immediate duties. We have to chalk out a programme and act accordingly." (2)

Why eyes are in front

One other important point to be aware of is that Baba tells us not to think about past misdeeds. One should forget about them. That is why He has designed human beings to have both eyes in the front: so every aspirant may look forward and march towards the Goal. Thinking about past negative events will cause those miseries and bad habits to come again and again in the mind.

Ananda Vanii says, "...No human being should ever belittle or slight themselves, rather they should make rigorous efforts to become worthy mediums (media). The wise and intelligent ideate less on their defects and demerits and more on the Supreme desideratum." (3)

To think over and over that, "I am a sinner - I am a sinner" is not good. This is the wrong psychology. Rather, one should entirely avoid thinking of that bad habit and directly engage the mind in higher pursuits. That is why in dharma samiiksa if anyone had committed some misdeed, Baba always first gave atonement. And then He guided their mind toward different social service activities. Only if He found that after this still people continued thinking and engaging in those same negative things, then He would feign anger and lovingly punish them for their welfare.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

According to Ananda Marga philosophy, the human mind has tremendous quality: What way the mind thinks, the whole personality can metamorphose in that direction. If a drunkard thinks only about poetry or feeding the homeless then he will become good; whereas even if an honest person thinks about his past misdeeds like stealing then that negative habit will again appear. That is why Baba has given the system of pratyaha'ra, 'offering of one's mental colors'. And this is exactly what we do in Guru Puja, so this is also one of the important practices.

AM teachings are the answer

All along, in His teaching in countless places, Baba has guided the entire society on this very point because in certain religions like Christianity they give a lot of preference to reminding people about their past sins. And most of the time that sin is unknown - what they did they do not know. This is present, in small or big form, in most of the religions. Because of this, Ananda Marga has given completely new ideas.

Baba has given the solutions to all the problems, so if ever anyone wants to solve any problem they should refer to Ananda Marga teachings.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru Baba says, “A correct spiritual ideology is the only solution to the problems confronting the world. From this perspective we can call Ananda Marga ideology the philosophers’ stone. Just as the philosophers’ stone is meant to transform everything into gold, Ananda Marga ideology can, most definitely, find a just and rational solution whenever it is applied to any problem.” (4)

Proper offering

“Prárthanárcaná mátraeva bhramamúlam.” (1)

Note: If one makes an external offering (fruit, garland, sweets etc) to Parama Purusa with the hope or expectation of getting something mundane in return, then that is the dogma of arcana. Arcana is forbidden in AM.

Whereas, when someone offers something material (fruit, garland, sweets etc) to Parama Purusa with love and affection and does not desire anything in return then it is not arcana. Rather, that is in accordance with AM teachings. And indeed, this type of offering is quite common and natural in mundane relations as well.

Tactic of religious cheats

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The vipras [religious leaders] have invented and are still inventing new ways of exploiting different communities of people in different parts of the world. In some places they have lured people with the prospect of eternal heaven, injecting into them at the same time the fear of eternal hell. By claiming the doctrine of some particular vipras [religious] leader to be the word of God, they have blocked the natural expression of the human intellect and made people intellectually bankrupt. With the intention of permanently securing for themselves an exalted position in the eyes of the ordinary people, some vipras [religious] leaders have declared themselves to be the incarnation or the appointed prophet of God. Through their own so-called scriptures, they have indirectly let the common people know that no one can achieve the same proximity to God as they – so that an inferiority complex will remain forever in the minds of the masses, and due to this inferiority complex the masses will always follow their teachings, either out of fear or out of devotion. That is why even intellectual people have fallen into their trap and have been compelled to say, Vishváse miláy vastu, tarke vahu dúr [“The goal is achieved not by reason but by faith”] or Majhab men ákl ká dakhl nahii haen [“There is no room for reason in religion”]. Entitlement: descendant of family acarya

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “With the noise of a bustling wind, people reminisce, “Oh, my grandfather accomplished this great feat… my aunt performed that marvellous work… our surname is Roychoudhury. For we were once great landlords…” Thus people always ruminate over their past and gloat over their ancestors, because they have no glorious present at all – everything is an empty void. When a community thus loses its inner wealth, then it tenaciously clings to the skeleton of its past and says, “I was this, I was that.” But they are unable to say, “I am this, I am that.” ... One must say, “Do not bother about what your ancestors have done. Why can’t you do...”” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Táttvika, ácárya, purodhá and such terms represent one’s individual ability and are not hereditary.” (2)

Note: In His above teachings, Sadguru Baba is guiding us that in our AM way of life there is no scope to stand on the coattails of one’s ancestors. Doing nothing in the present moment and gloating about past glories is not our way. Moreover, in AMPS we do not hand the post from one generation to the next on a hereditary basis. So if one’s father was a family acarya, that same title, post, glory, and respect is not automatically bestowed upon the son or daughter. In our Ananda Marga, everything is earned based on one’s conduct, not one’s birth.

The various dogmatic religions and racist approaches pass down their titles and supremacy in a very nasty way from one generation to the next. Verily, they use the   inherently exploitative tactic of one’s birth to suppress and denigrate others. This occurs with so-called whites exploiting so-called blacks, and so-called brahmins exploiting so-called shudras. Casteism and racism are based on this horrific edict ordained by sub-humans.

Birth of new nasty dogma: AMPS India

Sadly, now this same disease is rearing its ugly head in our AMPS. A few are claiming that, “Since my uncle / great-grandfather / father was a family acarya, then I am of a special birth and fit to rule over AMPS.” And others say, “My family has been in AMPS for generations, and both my grandfather and my father were family acaryas etc, so on that basis I should also be granted a great seat in AMPS.” They think AMPS belongs to them due to their ancestry, and everyone else is a guest. Even though they themselves have not done anything in this life, they feel being the grandson of a family acarya is enough for all of AMPS to fall at their feet. This type of senseless, empty banter is crowding the airwaves on some forums.

Those who are true Ananda Margiis understand well that in our AM way of life, no positions of power are granted on a hereditary basis. All are the sweet children of Parama Purusa, and one is only able to lead our AM society by their sadhana, service, sacrifice and dharmic conduct.

In Him,
Harideva

Inevitability of world government

Prout philosophy states, "With advances in technology, the mastery of human beings over space and time will continue slowly to increase, so the necessity of a world government, also, will be profoundly felt. Gradually the people in one region of the world will have to interact more with the people in various other regions, and in the course of this interaction they will have to try to understand one another better." (1)

Here Baba is teaching how in a gradual and natural course the world government will be established on this earth. And in a mundane way things are already moving in this direction. For example, there are millions of international and global organisations. Similarly, hundreds of thousands of corporations have a global administration. And in many families, their relations are working and living in multiple continents. And that is growing every moment. On a daily basis, tens of millions of people are crossing borders and traveling across the planet for various reasons. By this way, individuals, corporations, and NGO’s are already global. And this will take place in the political sphere very soon. Not only that, there is hardly any country that is not connected with another country. So there is a need. Already numerous attempts have been made at uniting various countries - in various regions of the globe. And such approaches will only increase with greater and greater success. The formation of a world government will be a natural step in this process.

How ghosts are fabricated

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In a dream, due to the dormant state of kámamaya kośa, the thought-vibrations of manomaya kośa appear real (this we call a dream when we wake up). When, due to extreme fear, stupefaction, crudity, or an excessive expression of any ripu or pásha, the kámamaya becomes temporarily suspended in the next higher kośa and the imagined objects appear real. This is also the case when a person sees various gods and goddesses. Psychologically, seeing a ghost, god or goddess is the same thing; none of them actually exist.”

“When hypnotized by someone, a person starts perceiving things as per the commands of the hypnotist. In this state, when the kámamaya is dormant a person feels that his/her imagined objects are real. Often, weak-minded people see ghosts, gods or goddesses of relatives. Such visions are auto- or outer-positive-hallucinations. Conversely, when people declare the absence of things which are actually present, it is called auto- or outer-negative-hallucination.”

“This clarifies that those who emphatically claim that they have seen ghosts are not wrong. It is due to the illusions of the negative or positive hallucinations that they see these things.”

Numerous defects of democracy

Prout philosophy states, "As a system of government, democracy cannot be accepted as the highest and best. Among all the systems human beings have been able to devise so far, democracy can be considered to be the best of a bad lot. If human beings can devise a better system in future, it will be proper to accept it wholeheartedly. Many defects in democracy have been discovered by human beings who have already started rectifying them." (1)
