Understanding bird-crocodile relation + 5 more

Baba

Understanding bird-crocodile relation

Namaskar,

This letter contains three key sections:

(I) Firstly, Baba guides us that the type of relation that exists between birds and crocodiles is a business relation - not an ideal service relation.
(II) Next, we learn about how some have grossly misinterpreted Baba’s given paradigm about the selfish bird and crocodile relation as an ideal service relation.
(III) Finally, we conclude that true service is one-sided - i.e. give, but don't take. It is not a business transaction. And, by this way, an ideal society can be formed.

Bird / crocodile business relation

As we know, bhagavad dharma has four pillars: (1) vistara or expansion, (2) rasa or flow, (3) seva or service, and (4) tadsthiti or attainment of the supreme stance.

Here in His divine discourse - "Plants, Animals and Human Beings" - Baba talks about what is true seva.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The third aspect is sevá or service. In the life of animals, there is no scope for service. There is only scope for mutual transaction, or what we call commodity transaction."

"This is the policy. Perhaps you know the story of the kumiir, which is called makar in Saḿskrta, crocodile in English and magarmaccha in Hindi. The crocodile is a carnivorous creature. Although it likes to stay in water, it is not an aquatic animal. It enters the water to catch its prey, and after devouring its prey it returns to the bank and lies quietly with its mouth open. Small birds often come and eat the pieces of meat stuck between the teeth of the crocodile. What is the result? The birds get their food and the teeth of the crocodile are cleaned. At that time the crocodile does not close its mouth, or else the birds would be killed. This is a commercial transaction."

"Human beings alone have the speciality of service. At the time of doing service, the motive must be that I shall give but not take. Service is one-sided. When human beings donate something, they do not expect anything in return. For example, if you give something to a beggar, you do not expect anything in return. Furthermore, once you have donated something, you forget about it. This is the speciality of human beings. However, some people make donations for other reasons. For instance, suppose a man donates a hundred thousand rupees to a charity. At night he will not be able to sleep because he is continuously thinking that in the morning he will get up and read in the newspaper that he, Chatumal Dakuram Batpari, donated a large amount of money for the public welfare. You should not behave like this. Once you donate something, you should forget about it immediately. A donation is one-way. If you offer flowers to Parama Puruśa, and at the same time you say mentally, “Parama Puruśa, my son has just appeared in his exams, so you must see that he passes very well. Also, my daughter must get a good husband and a good house. And I should be victorious in the court case against my cousin, etc.” – this will not do. You have to offer yourself without expecting anything in return. If you offer yourself completely at that time, you will attain the highest benefit. You will become one with Parama Puruśa, you will become Parama Puruśa. But if you keep one paise out of a rupee, you cannot get oneness with Parama Puruśa because of that one paise. Hence if you want to offer yourself, offer yourself cent per cent. This alone is known as service." (1)

By reading the above, every true disciple of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji can easily recognise and understand that Baba is guiding us that true seva is selfless and one-sided - i.e. giving to those in need. At the same time, Baba is warning us that we should not be like the crocodile and small birds who are both goaded by self-interest. In the tantra of Ananda Marga, our duty - the dharma of human beings - is to selflessly serve others.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How some are confused

Unfortunately, some have interpreted the above interaction between the birds and the crocodiles as an ideal form of service etc. In their confusion, they have cited the give-and-take relation of the birds and crocodile to be a pure expression of seva - whereby both the birds and crocodile are doing for each other. But that is completely wrong. The bird-crocodile relation, as Baba guides us, has nothing to do with service. Each is motivated by their own self-interest.

Here we have to bear in mind that crocodiles and birds are animals and if they are making transactions with one another that is quite normal. Because, after all, they are animals and have no capacity to serve. As humans, our standard is entirely different. Service - not selfishness - is one of the pillars of bhagavad dharma. An ideal society can never be formed on the basis of selfish give and take. Baba has clearly mandated that we have come here to serve.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, "...The best you can do is only to serve. Remember, you are to serve bearing in mind that every creature is verily the living manifestation of the Supreme Consciousness..." (2)

Ideal way to view others

So selfless service is our way, not the self-centered business transaction as depicted in the crocodile / bird relation. Human society is to be based on service where one has a relation of love and affection with one and all. That is the way to make a great society; selfish opportunists can never form a proper human society.

One important point is that not all in society are in position to give; i.e. they are not in position to participate in a business relation based solely on transactions. Consider a small child, or a sick person, or a disabled individual, or an elderly person, should they just be left to die because they are unable to give something? In that case, what will be their plight? Rather they are to be served.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Human beings alone have the speciality of service. At the time of doing service, the motive must be that I shall give but not take. Service is one-sided. When human beings donate something, they do not expect anything in return." (3)

One should not be selfish or business-minded in their dealings. Baba clearly does not appreciate such types of selfish transactions. That is not seva. That is not part of bhagavad dharma. By this way one cannot form an ideal society. About this there should not be any confusion, and verily most sadhakas easily grasp and personify this ideal.

In Him,
Arjuna Deva

Every heart is welcoming

“Nishár avasán holo, purvákáshe raunga elo, taruń aruń d́ák diye bole…” (Prabhat Samgiita #4614)

Purport:

Now, in the eastern horizon the crimson colour is clearly visible. The night has passed away; the darkness has vanished. Now the rising sun is calling and telling everyone, "Unlatch the doors and windows of your house. Open the entrance way, let the light in, awaken the chamber of your soul, and shake off the dogma of groupism." Indeed the blackness has been removed. The bondage of dogma has disappeared from the mind. A divine age has come.

That which was unrecognizable and unknown in the past, due to the darkness of ignorance, has become familiar and known in the presence of effulgence. All the expressions are part of my family feeling. The birds of distant places are spreading their wings and coming near. Those who were far in the past have become close, my own. Now in the advent of this reddish dawn, the staticity has faded away and each domicile is ready; every heart is welcoming. In days bygone, humans were treating others as distant beings or aliens, but now they can see that all are their own brothers and sisters; whereas yesterday people were thinking that others wereforeign - part of some outside faction. By His grace, the realisation has come that, "All are mine." The depravity of the mental realm has faded away. There remains no distinction, no dullness, no bondage. A bright yuga has arrived.

Today, every home has become unlocked and accessible; in that airy dwelling - nothing can impede the refreshing flow of neo-humanism; all have become broad-minded. Humanity is no longer plagued by the rigid outlooks of socio, geo, and religious sentiments. Their vision is expanded - no longer diseased. The rise of a universal fraternity and one cosmic family are entering into their psychic domain. Living beings understand that all are kith and kin. In the past, the intellect was used to exploit others. It was motivated by self, clan, and national interest. Now, reason is guided by universal love and neo-humanism. Each and every jiiva, propelled by spiritual nectar, is concerned for the welfare of all. A resplendent epoch has been born.

The grim days of hatred and exploitation have faded away; Baba, by Your krpa, the age of neo-humanism has come...

Key strategy for pracara

Namaskar,

When discussing Ananda Marga teachings with negative elements or bad people in a particular area, then it is better not to go alone. Having more than one, two, or three margiis present - or as many as you can take - will give greater psycho-spiritual strength to overpower those bad minds. By this way those negative elements can be convinced and brought into the fold.

This strategy is especially applicable when anyone feels uncomfortable going alone to meet with such anti-social elements, or so-called very famous people. In that case, bring other Ananda Margiis along with you to help convince that party about the ideals of Ananda Marga, and turn them into ardent sadhakas.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Every human being has certain merits and demerits. Suppose a person has forty  percent merit and sixty percent demerit: the resultant demerit is twenty percent. If a weak person whose resultant demerit is forty percent comes in contact with a person whose resultant demerit is more than forty percent, he will certainly degenerate. Obviously, a thief will not be a durjana (wicked person) for a perfectly honest person because the latter will easily counteract the thief's negative qualities. But for an ordinary person without any notable attributes, the thief will certainly be a durjana. Those with less psychic or spiritual power can easily be influenced by a wicked person. Those who are psychically and spiritually developed, however, are not so easily influenced and for them even a very wicked person may not be a durjana. It is the duty of every human being to avoid wicked people. You may ask, 'Can wicked people ever become virtuous?' Of course they can, but remember that only those people having greater psychic power than them should try to transform them. So what should you do? Instead of going alone, you should take five or ten friends with you so that your collective psychic strength will be greater than theirs." (1)

The same approach applies when addressing those Wts who are not following Ananda Marga WT conduct rules. If you think a particular Wt will not listen to you when you raise the matter, then go en masse with other margiis and address that worker. Then surely you will get success. That is the gist of the aforesaid Baba’ quoted guideline.

in Him,
Harideva

Way to train

Ananda Marga ideology states, "You exist in a vast, limitless ocean of rasa or essences. A never-ending, radiant wave of manifestations is surging within and without you and radiating through all the ten directions – the indescribable vibrational expressions of small and great, accented and unaccented, eternally flowing thought-waves. Behave properly and reasonably with every expression, with every manifestation of the Cosmic mind. But always remember the One, Who is the essence of all these diverse vibrational manifestations. Train yourselves in the ideal of the lily, which blossoms in the mud and has to keep itself engaged in the struggle for existence day in and day out, parrying, bracing and fighting the shocks of muddy water and the force of storms and squalls and various other vicissitudes of fortune; and yet it does not forget the moon above. It keeps its love for the moon constantly alive. It seems but a most ordinary flower: there is nothing extraordinary about it. Yet, this most ordinary little flower has a romantic tie with the great moon. It has focused all its desires on the moon. Similarly, perhaps you are an ordinary creature – perhaps you have to pass your days in the ups and downs of worldly existence – yet do not forget that Supreme One. Keep all your desires inclined towards Him. Always keep yourself merged in His thought. Go deep into the mood of that Infinite Love. By this your worldly activities will not be hampered in any way."

Kumud candramá dúrete rahiyá yemati rákhaye priiti,
Temati Shrii Rádhá kánu páne cáhi grha káj kare niti.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "No matter what circumstances you are in, never lose sight of the Infinite One. Degradation is impossible for those who have accepted the Supreme Being as the Ideal of their lives. Indulging in mean thoughts only engenders crude vibrations in the Citta, as the result of which you will have to take rebirth in lower species in order to suffer the lowly Saḿskáras created by those crude vibrations. Thus you must arouse higher vibrations in your Citta. Even a man of King Bharata's calibre had to take rebirth as a deer because at the time of his death he was deeply anxious about a fawn. Thus regardless of what you are at present or what you may possibly become in the future, do not digress from the ideal of the Great in any circumstances: do not stray even a step away from the path of realization of Absolute Bliss. Ananda Marga or the path to eternal bliss is the only path for you." (1)

How to curb immigration

Prout philosophy states, "Economic decentralization means production for consumption, not production for profit. Economic decentralization is not possible under capitalism, because capitalist production always tries to maximize profit. Capitalists invariably produce at the lowest costs and sell at the highest profits. They prefer centralized production, which leads to regional economic disparity and imbalances in the distribution of the population. In the decentralized economy of PROUT on the other hand, production is for consumption, and the minimum requirements of life will be guaranteed to all. All regions will get ample scope to develop their economic potentiality, so the problems of a floating population or overcrowding in urban centres will not be allowed to arise." (1)

Duty in each stage of life

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Regarding age, it might be appropriate to say that there are basically four stages in human life. In the first stage, the primary duty of the human being is to receive knowledge and do dharma sadhana. In the second stage, one must fulfill worldly duties and perform dharma sadhana. In the third stage, one must see to any remaining family responsibilities and perform dharma sadhana. Finally, in the fourth stage, when the human body has become incapable of performing worldly duties, one must do dharma sadhana alone. So there are no barriers of age as far as the requirements for a sadhaka are concerned." (1)

Note: Some of the religions preach that one should only spend their later years for contemplative activities and the rest of the life should be spent on worldly affairs. In Ananda Marga, we do not subscribe to such a belief. Sadhana is to be performed from the earliest possible moment and extended through the course of one's entire life. So many other worldly duties and responsibilities will come and go, but throughout life one should be vigilant in the practice of dharma sadhana. Waiting till old age will not do.

Very famous but 100% make-believe

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Many of you are aware of the fact that Ramchandra was not an historical figure, but a fictional one: he was an imaginary character to represent an ideal king. Maharśi Valmiki was the first person to give proper expression to that character. But the poet Tulsidas tried still harder, in the Mughal period, not very long ago, to accomplish this through the Rámacaritamánasa, written in the Avadhii language. The Rámacaritamánasa is not the complete Rámáyańa. Tulsidas described the character of Rama as he thought Rama should be; he delineated the character of Rama as he conceived of Rama in his own mind. Tulsidas was a truthful person. He did not name his book the Tulasiidásii Rámáyańa, he named it Rámacaritamánasa [“The Life of Rama As Conceived by Tulsidas”].” (1)

Pathway for AMPS to grow & serve + 3 more

Baba

Pathway for AMPS to grow & serve

Namaskar,

This is an ongoing issue related with the practical survival of our AMPS society, our service projects, and our Wt cadre. You might have noticed that these days many Wts posted overseas, and a growing number in India, are heavily involved in doing business. They earn money for their day-to-day needs and for their different projects; plus they have to pay "dues" to their supervisors etc to keep in "good standing" with their bosses. So they have various financial demands. And these economic pressures, which include maintaining Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha social service projects, are met increasingly through their various business endeavours. As an organisation and Ananda Marga family, we have to carefully evaluate how sustainable this approach is for our AMPS society, and how far it supports the well-being of our Wts.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Projects should be run by local margiis & sympathizers

When we analyse the history of our human society, there are numerous examples of organisations that were only supported by particular individuals, or only by a single rich person, or only by the king etc. Such organisations could not survive. In India, in the Mogul period, many mosques were sustained by the then Muslim rulers. And when the throne changed, and a different dynasty came to power, thousands of mosques were abandoned and left to rot.

In the Buddhist era in India, Buddhist monasteries were financially supported by the ruling kings of different regions. And when those rulers lost their power, the Buddhist monasteries could no longer be maintained and were ultimately lost to neglect and decay etc. The bottom line is that any organization needs broad-based support from its local members and citizens. If those local members and sympathizers are not encouraged or welcomed to be deeply involved in managing those projects, then that organisation will not survive long.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, local margii involvement and management is necessary in all service projects. Family margiis should be encouraged and empowered with positions of management. At the same time, Wts will oversee those projects on a broader level, while the day-to-day running of the project is done by margiis, including financial management.

Wts should supervise not run the project - why

So in each area and in every district, our local margiis should take on managerial-level positions for those projects. And more and more locals should be initiated and brought on board to help. Otherwise, if only a migrant / transitory population alone is managing the project, as is the case with Wts or margiis from other areas, then that project will not succeed over the long haul. That we have seen again and again. At the same time, sympathizers can always help; but, non-margiis might leave anytime so they cannot be depended upon to sponsor or oversee our projects.

That is why in each and every country, province, city, and town, Baba has given the plan that local people, i.e. local margiis, should be actively involved and act as the managers of our organisational works in that place. Only by this way can our projects grow. By this approach, the inhabitants of that area will feel more connected with Ananda Marga. Because they will see their own hometown citizens managing the projects. They will have greater trust etc.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Overall then two points are needed:
(A) Local margiis should get opportunity to actively engage in and run the organisational projects in their area.
(B) Further efforts should be made to involve the local inhabitants in a supportive role. Our AMPS organization should not depend on a migrant or temporary population only.

Nowadays Wts are running the projects

Practically speaking though, nowadays most of the projects in Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha are funded in two ways. Wts earn money by doing business, and Wts collect donations from the public etc. This is the case in various sectors. And when the particular Wt funding a project gets transferred, then the project falls apart. The reason is that worker was overly busy in business and sponsoring the project. Neither he had the support from his supervisors, nor the time and presence of mind to create and nourish local margiis so they could run the local service projects.

To build up our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, Baba guides us to do pracara among the local people. That is the only way. In every nook and corner around the globe Baba wants for AMPS to grow following this plan. Yet upon reviewing the history since 1990, we see that gradually our acaryas working overseas became more and more dependent upon doing business to earn the requisite money and run the projects. So more business involvement is needed to fulfill their different financial needs. In this condition sincere Wts hardly have time to manage their own psycho-spiritual development, let alone guide others in that arena. Wts engage more heavily in their business affairs while their spiritual life gets neglected.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In other areas, Wts collect money from locals and do not give any account. In that situation, some margiis and sympathizers are not are not fully invested and committed to the project. They think it is someone else’s work. But if margiis and locals are given an active role in managing the project then it will flourish. Otherwise the tendency is to become apathetic to the project. It is just like if you are walking and saw a beggar in distress and gave them some money and walked away, thinking that your duty is over.

Conclusion

To run successful Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha service projects in any area:

(1) Both local margiis and Lfts should support and be actively engaged in that project. Our Wts are to supervise but not become overly engrossed in the daily operation of those projects.

(2) The accounting should be verified by a CPA, and the annual report should be put on-line. With this transparency, the donations will come pouring in. There will not be any dearth of funds. Remember, there are so many who are searching for good service organisations to support.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

If the above two points are strictly followed, then our AMPS service projects will last long, far into the future. And by this way our tantric society will grow by leaps and bounds. Baba has said that the world will come to know about Ananda Marga teachings by our service projects.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Trikalajina

~ In-depth study ~

When overly-involved in business affairs

Some important notes and quotes are here below which relate to this entire theme - i.e. some Wts who meet their fate due to over-involvement in business affairs.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Those who were decent human beings and deeply spiritual, and used to collect money for a noble cause, but in the process of fund raising forgot Parama Purus'a and attached greater importance to their fund raising at the cost of Parama Purus'a -- that is, they remembered Parama Purus'a as part of dharma sa'dhana' and collected money for a great cause, and although Parama Purus'a was the goal collecting money became the dominant desire -- they attain the state of yaks'a devayonii after their demise." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Those who constantly think about rupees or dollars attain a kind of sama'dhi, too, for they become completely identified with their crude object of attraction. If such people incur heavy losses due to the collapse of their business or bank, they will die an instant death, for the pillars on which their life was built crumbled beneath them. So, once they lost their wealth, they lost their lives too." (2)

Why not whole life in one place

Some advise that Wts should stay in the same posting and location for ages and ages. They wrongly think that by this way those workers will be able to accomplish a lot. And, after all, this is what the various religions do etc. But such an approach runs wholly counter to our Ananda Marga conduct rules and the spirit of Wt life. We have seen again and again that when a given worker stays in the same place they get degenerated. They become involved in all kinds of vices, stagnancy sets in, and all their dynamicity is lost.

Who is Wt: All know that WT means wholetimer dedicated worker - male and female, i.e. Dadas and Didis. Furthermore in this letter the term acarya is used to represent both male and female Wts.

How rich commit crimes

In this below teaching Baba is pointing out how economically wealthy people indulge in anti-social activities like adulteration, drug dealing, and many other vices and illicit affairs. All the while they employ poor people to do the dirty work. In result, the poor people get arrested by law enforcement personnel while those rich, wealthy people save themselves by paying bribes or hiring high-powered lawyers. In the end, most of the profit of those gross dealings goes to rich people and the poor suffer. Due to their poverty, the poor cannot escape this cycle from one generation to the next. That in the ghettos people are perpetually incarcerated.

In this teaching Baba is referring to crude criminal acts as well as white-collar crime. In big business and on the corporate level, the schemes are much more sophisticated. Big banks cheat millions of people out of billions of dollars. Yet, those top bankers are almost never arrested or even charged. They escape because the laws are in their favour, or they hire lawyers to find loopholes in the law. And if they do get caught and are found guilty, then 99.9% of the time those high-level executives do not go to jail. Instead they pay a fine. But if a poor person steals even a single item they will get arrested and sit in jail for robbery for twenty years.

This happens only in the vaeshyan era and we have to raise awareness to put an end to this.

Prout philosophy states, “Most of the evils that occur in society are created due to the exploitation carried out by the vaeshyas. In order to increase the size of their bank balances, the vaeshyas create an artificial scarcity of such items as food, clothing and other essential commodities, and then earn a profit by black marketeering. Those who do not have the capacity to purchase commodities at exorbitant prices steal, commit armed robberies and engage in other criminal activities in order to obtain the minimum requirements of their lives. Poor people deprived of food and clothing work as the agents of the greedy vaeshyas engaged in black marketeering and smuggling. When these poor people are caught, they are the ones who get punished, while the vaeshyas escape thanks to the power of their money. Such ill-fated poor people lose their consciences and descend deeper into sin. Society condemns these sinners, while the rich vaeshyas, the instigators of the sinners, play the role of public leaders. They wear garlands, set off verbal fireworks, and shrilly exhort the masses to make greater sacrifices.” (1)

Can one remain tight-lipped & sit quietly with folded arms

Prout philosophy states, “Now, suppose a man seems to have good relations with his neighbours, but it becomes apparent that he is about to murder his wife, what should be the duty of the neighbours? Will they remain tight-lipped, sit quietly with their arms folded, and dismiss the situation as purely a domestic affair, thereby making the murder of the woman easier, and thus assist in establishing static peace? No, that is not the dictum of human dharma. On the contrary they should rush to the house, break down the door, save the woman, take suitable action against the male tyrant, and in this way come forward to establish sentient peace.” (1)

Note: The above Proutistic teaching applies to both individual and collection life. Wherever there is an injustice, then there must be an intervention, either by the neighbouring family, or the neighbouring country. Sitting quietly and biding the time while a wrongdoing is unfolding is not our way. According to Prout, it is the bounden duty of every right-thinking individual and government to jump into action.

Helps cure disease

Sadguru Baba says, "To maintain the internal functions of the body without hindrance and to maintain the internal liquid balance, everyone should drink a sufficient quantity of water every day. A healthy person can consume three or four seers of water a day, a sick person four or five seers, and a person suffering from skin disease, five or six seers. These amounts of water help cure disease to a great extent." (Yogic Treatments, Appendix, A. Water Drinking)

Note: One seer is very close to one liter.

== Section: Important Teaching ==

How they become worse than animals

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Animals are guided by instincts. They do not know the why and the how of things. Human beings, on the other hand, are led by the mind. Animals cannot go beyond their instincts. In case of [great] intellectual clash, however, the animal mind, like the human, gets more subtle. This is generally found to occur with those animals who remain in contact with humans. But the development that is discernible in this case is not spiritual, it is simply intellectual. Dogs and monkeys who are trained, for instance, can be made a bit [more intelligent] than other ones."

"Human beings, on the other hand, have the capacity to develop even in the spiritual realm. Those who do not pay heed to this special gift are animals, nay, even worse than animals. Animals are unable to make efforts for their spiritual development, whereas humans do have this ability." (1)

Note: Here above Baba is pointing out some of the basic differences between humans and animals. Animals are dominated by instinct, whereas humans are mind dominated and have the capacity to grow spiritually. Even then, tragically, some degenerated human beings surrender this cherished human quality and foolishly submit their existence at the altar of instinct. Even though they possess a human mind they live like animals - always in the grip of their baser propensities. Verily, they are worse than animals. By Baba's causeless grace, we are fortunate to have been blessed with a human body and mind, as well as the tools of spiritual sadhana, so we can progress and become divine.

Bhakti and fear are mutually exclusive

Here below Baba gives us a very unique definition of who become fearful.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "You should remember that a situation will never arise in this world which will give you cause for fear. It has been said that Parama Purusa is the fear of fear. That is, fear is as afraid of Parama Purusa as humans are afraid of fear."

"Ananda Marga is essentially Tantra-orientated, it too, has a few special features of its own. As I have said previously, our ideology maintains that no-one need be afraid of anything under any circumstances. If anyone does get afraid, it should be understood that he is doing something ultravarious to our ideology." (1)
