Best work: cowards can’t do

Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

If someone is selling the jagriti and you go on making more jagritis, then you will not win. As you build, they will sell. So you have to point out when there is any wrongdoing. That is the only solution.

Example of hole in the dyke & potential catastrophe

Some of our brothers and sisters say, “Why are you wasting your time in pointing out others. Ignore their wrongdoing—and just involve yourself in ‘constructive works’ like I do. Go on involving in important works like I do.” Such type of people fail to understand that pointing out the defects and harmful patterns is the most constructive work one can do for the society. Where there is a problem one must point it out. If you do not point out the wrongdoing then the number of social ills will multiply and things will be destroyed.

Here is why pointing out is the most constructive work which everyone should do: It is just like if you are in charge of a dyke and saw that there is a hole and water is gushing through, then you have to make a hue and cry otherwise your constructive work is meaningless. Alerting others of of the problems is your constructive work, and that will help serve and save the population. Otherwise all will be destroyed.

If some Wt has a weakness, iis remiss in a given conduct rule, and engaging in a relationship with the opposite sex, then if you do not point out the problem they may drown, leave their Wt ship, and marry someone. By that way there are two serious issues. The Wt became fully degraded and we lost a Wt who was an asset to the society. That is why it is constructive work to point out the problem and save the wt, rather than let the issue fester until finally that Wt falls completely and leaves their Wt ship.

Sadguru Baba guides us, "From the social or human viewpoint, everybody has the right to correct the behaviour of everyone else. This is the birthright of every human being. No scholar can dispute the right of people to correct the shortcomings of those with whom they come in contact. The recognition of this right is indispensable for the health of society." (1)

Sad incident: Tiirthananda sex scandal example

Look at the former Sectorial Secretary of NY Sector ex-Tiirthananda. People knew about what was going on. Wts and Margiis could have pointed it out and kept him as a Wt. But in their misguided approach, they overlooked the problem, ignored the situation, and just kept busy in other things rather than point outing out the negative relation. Until finally, Tiirthananda threw away his saffron dress in the garbage bin and got married with one didi. The nasty relation with didi was going on since ages. People knew, but did not point it out. Until finally it was too late and he was lost. And that is the sorry situation. This is a classic example.

Our Ananda Marga society could have saved him by pointing out the situation. Those who kept mum and did not point it out the problem are guilty. Those in NY sector like Vishvadeva (Oregon), Cirasmita (Vermont), Valmiki (North Carolina), and Vishvamitra (North Carolina) knew the illicit relation was going on but they overlooked it - allowing Dada T to fall further into quagmire and leading the sector astray. Thereafter, all they (Vishvadeva & Cirasmita etc) could do was repent for keeping mum and abetting Dada’s downfall.

Conclusion

The overarching point is that identifying the wrongoing is itself the constructive work. Ignoring the problem and allowing it to grow as a cancer is a social ill. As a dharmika, it is one’s bounden duty to boldly step forward and address the situation. Verily, the most important thing is to point out wrong actions. That is the greatest step one can take as that will help lead the wrongdoer back onto the proper path and save the society. Sadly, cowards and goody-goodies always fail in this regard. One should not fall in this category; rather, one should be a dharmika and point out the problem - thereby helping to rectify the matter.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “All Ananda Margis, when they see other Margis acting against the principles of Yama and Niyama, must make them shun this habit either by sweet or harsh words or by dealing even more strictly. Thus they will have to make the society strong.” (2)

How we lost Anuvratananda

Another example from NY sector is the case of Anuvratananda. He was sleeping with one margii girl, Shanti. Important margiis knew about this. Then in order to continue other pursuits, he helped arrange  Shanti’s marriage with brother N of NY. Even then Anuvratananda continued those misdeeds and after sometime he could no longer resist his desire and he chose to live with her permanently. So Anuvratananda took Shanti from that marriage, threw away his avadhuta dress, and now he is gone from the WT ranks and living with her fulltime in matrimony etc. It is unfortunate that we lost one Wt. When the infatuation was growing then it should have been stopped. Many Wts close to Anuvratananda knew about his ways, but they overlooked the situation. Sadly, that only enabled the problem to mushroom - and verily this has occurred with numerous Wts, unfortunately. The real answer lies in pointing out the wrongdoers. The “pointing out medicine” is very unique. In this situation it surely would have helped. Then Anuvratananda would still be an avadhuta. So when a problem crops up it should be identified, diagnosed, and given the remedy. By this way we can make AMPS disease-free.

Should keep watch on one another

Sadguru Baba says, "Regarding the Sixteen Points, it was said that ácárya/ás or senior persons would see if you were observing them properly or not. Similarly, I gave a directive to all that they should keep watch on one another. No one will exempt anyone else regarding the Sixteen Points." (3)

Their afflictions have drowned in the ocean

Note: Only those bhaktas who feel a spiritual vibration in their heart can understand this song in the depths of their core.

"Tumi biná ke bá krpá karite páre,ár káke máne sárá carácare..." (Prabhat Samgiita #0350)

Purport:

O' Parama Purusa, Baba, who else can bless me except You - no one. Who else can I accept as my own in this entire mobile and immobile universe - only You.

O' Parama Purusa, all created beings are looking towards You for Your mercy and karuńá. Today the lyres of all the minds’ viinas harmonically resonate in a single melody: Baba "You are everything." All their sufferings and all their afflictions have drowned in the ocean of Your compassion. All the pain has been relieved; all their sorrows have been transformed into bliss, by Your grace.

O' Parama Purusa, Baba, You love all unconditionally, not judging anyone by their merits and demerits. You never hate anyone because they are foolish, dumb, or unintelligent etc. You wholly embrace all irrespective of their qualities. You are the most dear - the heart of hearts of all. Baba, You are the Goal of meditation, the anudhya'na of everybody; and the veritable Ista of all bhaktas. You are final desideratum for everyone. All attain their eternal fulfillment satiation from You alone. Meditating on You, one gets moksa, by Your sweet wiil.

Who else can grace me except You - no one. Who else can I accept as my own in this universe - no one but You. O' Parama Purusa, no one else is mine but You…

Kiirtan & drumming
Ananda Marga ideology says, "It is advisable to play some instrument during kiirtana. A mrdanga [a kind of drum] or some similar instrument should be used, but one should not play any heavy sounding instrument like a dhak [a large drum played with sticks], a dhol [a loud drum] or a gong. The mind prefers to hear a sweet sound, like that of the mrdanga, than a harsh sound. Some time ago I mentioned that Bhola Mayra said that when the cawing of crows and the beating of drums stop, human ears get some relief. People do not like to hear such harsh, unpleasant sounds. The sound of the mrdanga may not be perfect, but it has one quality: it is very sweet. Thus, whenever a distracted mind hears the sweet music of a mrdanga, it returns to the proper place. A remarkable science lies in kiirtana." (1)

Here are two points regarding Baba's above teaching:
(a) During kiirtan, the mind becomes sentient and does not appreciate rajasik sounds.
(b) During kiirtan, sometimes many indriyas are involved: The mouth, ears, hands, feet, nose, eyes, and tongue. When the indriyas are involved in this way, they help keep the mind focused and bring the mind back when it runs away. Here is the philosophical and practical explanation.

In general, the mind runs towards external physicality via the indriyas, i.e. 10 motor and sensory organs. So when those indriyas are fully involved in a spiritual endeavour like kiirtan, then the mind is forced to engage in kiirtan via one or another organ. The mind always wants to run - either by thinking a disparate thought or by stimulus received via the organs. As Baba explains above, when the organs are positively involved in a devotional practice like kiirtan, then if the mind wanders away from the kiirtan those organs will help bring the mind back to a spiritual flow.

For instance, let's say someone doing kiirtan starts thinking about the market and what they will purchase there. Yet when the sweet sound of the mrdangam is received via the sensory organs, i.e. the ears, then that sound will bring the mind back the devotional ideation of the kiirtan.

The mind can think any stray thought at any time but if the indriyas are engaged in a spiritual manner, then that will help bring the mind back. That is the special import of singing and dancing kiirtan, along with the sounds of the mrdangam and other low-pitch sentient musical instruments.

They cannot be sadhakas

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Abhimána is no better than drinking wine. Gaorava is truly like raorava hell. (The highest loka is Satyaloka and the lowest loka is raorava. One who suffers from a superiority complex is converted into stone – he or she will be crudified to this extent. This is the result of the feeling of a superiority complex.) And pratiśt́há is like shúkariiviśt́há. “I will be at the pinnacle of society and people will respect me” – this sense is like [a desire for] shúkariiviśt́há. So give up these three mental ailments – abhimána, gaorava and pratiśt́há – and then engage yourself in contemplation on Hari.” (1)

Note: Please pay attention to the yellow, it says that if you have abhimána, gaorava and pratiśt́há then you cannot do sadana. If you see anyone with abhimána, gaorava and pratiśt́há and they have have been taught sadhana but still these three things are present, then it means they are not doing proper sadhana. Otherwise they would have removed these three diseases. They will first have to give up or overcome these tendencies: abhimána, gaorava and pratiśt́há. In other words, if anyone has these three characteristics they cannot do sadhana and they are not a sadhaka. That is what our Guru’s teaching says.
