Against the point of Ista + 4 more

Baba
Against the point of Ista

Namaskar,

In His body of Ananda Marga teachings, Baba has given 16 points; and, one point is Ista. Ananda Margiis must be strict in Ista. Failing that one will never be able to cultivate pointed bhakti for Him. Every Ananda Margii knows that Lord Shiva, Lord Krsna and Sadguru Baba are all Taraka Brahma, but, as per the shloka, Tathápi mama sarvasvah Rámah kamalalocana, we should contemplate only Baba in meditation, while singing Prabhat Samgiita, while doing kiirtan etc.

Must link with one entity - not many

Think in this way: One small child calls its mother with the name "mom". With that appellation, with that word, the mother and child are linked. When the child calls out "mom", then that mother comes rushing and helps the child. Now let's say the mother's legal or professional name is Radhika Devii, or Betty Thompson, or Maria Valencia Garcia. Then if that same child starts calling Radhika, Radhika, Radhika, or Betty, Betty, Betty, or Maria, Maria, Maria, then neither the child nor the mother will feel linked. Neither one will appreciate this.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

This simple analogy can be understood by anyone. Try it in your own life with your own mother, close family member, intimate friend, or companion. Experiment with not using that special appellation or nickname that you have for them and address them by their public, legal name. You will find that the effect and vibration is vastly different as it undermines the intimacy and closeness of the relation.

The relationship with Ista works in the same way. Bhaktas and the Lord have a special relation and connection with one name, not many. Bhaktas and God have a very intimate relation - there is only one name by which to address the Lord. Ista is one not two, and not many.

For Ananda Margiis, the Ista (i.e. nearest and dearest One) is Baba. So one must not focus on Lord Shiva or Lord Krsna during spiritual practices. That will bifurcate the mind and dilute one’s standard of bhakti. In numerous discourses, Baba says the name of Ista is one, not multiple. In Ananda Marga sadhana, Baba alone is the Ista. It is His glory one should sing and His name and form should be meditated upon. Remember, this is a very important spiritual guideline. If you follow this you get everything and if you do not follow it you will not get anything in the realm of spirituality.

Story of great bhakta Hanuman & one Ista

Here is a very significant story about the mythological bhakta - Hanuman.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "When Hanuman was asked why he was so insistent on taking the name of Ráma and never taking the name Náráyańa, he promptly replied:

    Shriináthe jánakiináthe cábheda Paramátmani
    Tathápi mama sarvasvah Rámah kamalalocana.

Ananda Marga ideology says, “I know by philosophical analysis that there is no difference between Náráyańa and Rama, and yet I will channelize my mind towards One Entity and not many. For me there is no Náráyańa, there is only Ráma. Likewise for the genuine spiritual aspirants there is only One Entity, and they rush only towards that Supreme One. Their minds move only in one direction, not in a thousand directions." (1)

In that discourse, Baba's pointed teaching in this story is that a sadhaka's feeling of bhakti should be linked with one Ista. And for Ananda Margiis that Ista is Parama Purusa Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. For non-margiis it may be Lord Krsna or Lord Shiva. But for Ananda Margiis it is Baba.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

You know that Lord Shiva, Lord Krsna, and Baba are all Taraka Brahma, but as the shloka says: Tathápi mama sarvasvah Rámah kamalalocana, we should contemplate only Baba in meditation, while singing Prabhat Samgiita, while doing kiirtan etc. During spiritual practices an Ananda Margii should not think about Lord Shiva or Lord Krsna. During bhakti practices, it is not appropriate to sing songs about Krsna or Shiva, nor is it appropriate to sing Prabhat Samgiita songs about samaja, Taj Mahal, the river madhumati, Bangladesh, neo-humanism, Gurukul, Prout, marriage and shraddha, house entrance, naming ceremony,  etc. None of the aforementioned songs are for spiritual practices. During that time, one should sing for Baba.

Without this idea firmly set in the mind, one cannot reach the Goal. Ananda Margiis should not say, "O Lord Krsna come and grace me." That will not help one in the field of bhakti, rather it will impede one’s sadhana etc. The mind will be bifurcated or trifurcated. Some part of the mind will go to Lord Krsna, and another part to Lord Shiva, and some portion to Baba. That mind is broken, retarded - it will go nowhere. For Ananda Margii, there is one Ista - Baba.

Lord Shiva song not for margiis

If one oblivious margii is singing this song - Jaya shubhavajradhara shubhra kalevara (Prabhat Samgiita #2526) - it means they are paying homage to Lord Shiva, requesting Him to "please come in my meditation and come in my dhyana." But then when they conclude the song and start their actual meditation practice, they are pointing the mind towards your Guru, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. So that bifurcated approach is not good; it will not be helpful. Because one the one side they are addressing Lord Shiva and Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji; the mind is not at all pointed, rather bifurcated. Yet sadhana can only be done with a pointed mind.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru says, "According to spiritual science the samádhi attained when the entire mind is pin-pointed." (2)

Conclusion

An Ananda Margii should only sing those Prabhat Samgiita compositions that point the mind towards Baba; whereas those other compositions about Lord Krsna and Lord Shiva are for the general public. In spiritual life, a sadhaka of Ananda Marga is to choose from the many hundreds of songs about Baba and sing only those songs, and not sing or use compositions about Lord Krsna and Lord Shiva. That does not mean we should discard those songs about Lord Krsna and Lord Shiva, rather we are to learn them so we can teach non-margiis. But, in one's own personal practice and spiritual life, a bhakta of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji (Baba) is to only sing songs about Him. That is the key point.

Namaskar,
In Him alone,
Madhumatii

Multi-deity dogma in all religions

In their day-to-day practical manner, the Semitic religions worship not one god but many. Those followers ask boons and grace from numerous imaginary godheads. In their practical life that is what they do.

Nowadays, most Christians and Muslims are in so-called 3rd world countries. And those believers follow multiple religions plus local gods and goddesses. They are involved in numerous belief systems. One single person might worship Allah, a Christian God, and their own local or native gods / goddesses and ritualistic deities. This is prevalent all around Africa and the Asian nations.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Next is Buddhism which has adopted multiple deities. And the worst is Hinduism where there are countless gods and goddesses. Those who come into Ananda Marga from one of the various religions backgrounds often have a hard time understanding that Ista must be one, i.e. singular. Those who come into Ananda Marga at a young age easily understand. Age aside, those with adequate bhakti absolutely understand.

In Ananda Marga, Baba has given 16 Points; and as noted above, one point is Ista. Ananda Margiis must be strict in Ista. In the practical realm that means: Although there are countless names of Parama Purusa, but for disciples of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, the Ista is Baba, not Lord Krsna, not Lord Shiva, not goddess Durga, not Gaunga etc. There is none other important entity besides Baba.

Sincerity alone is not enough

Those who worship idols do not know that they will one day become idols; they will not become one with Parama Purusa. So although they are involved in worship, but that style of worship is the wrong approach and they are going to be crudified. They will not be benefitted, rather degraded.

So here the key point is that sincerity alone is not enough. Those idol worshipers are very sincere in their approach to their deity. But the outcome of their practice is not good; they will degenerate and become one with the stone, bronze, copper, clay, wood etc, whatever their idol is made of. So no practitioner can stand on sincerity alone; the path must also be proper. An Ananda Margii should only sing those bhakti compositions that point the mind towards Baba; whereas those Prabhat Samgiita compositions about Lord Krsna and Lord Shiva are for the general public.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, "A person whom I was very close to, a relative of mine, used to recite the following after taking bath: “Victory to mother Káli, victory, victory to Káli, victory to mother Káli of T́han T́haniá, victory to mother Káli of Dakśińeshvar, victory to Bábá Táraknáth, victory to Bábá Vaidyanath of Deoghar. O, Fathers! None of you should think that I am leaving out someone's name.” After this he would say, “O, gods and goddesses, please forgive me if I have omitted any name inadvertently. Please assume that I have mentioned your name also.” Does this yield anything at all? One says “victory to mother Káli of Kálighát” and in the same breath one says “victory to mother Káli of T́han T́haniá.” It signifies that the mind is moving both towards Kálighát and T́han T́haniá. Can the mind become concentrated in this way? Certainly not." (3)

For Ananda Margiis, that means that although there are countless names of Parama Purusa, but for bhaktas and disciples of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, the Ista is Baba, not Lord Krsna, not Lord Shiva, not goddess Durga, not Gaunga etc. There is none other besides Baba. So although there are 5,019 Prabhat Samgiita songs, the sadhaka must have the required viveka to use the songs in the right way. We are only to sing those songs in our spiritual practices that focus on Baba, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji.

Bringing revolution

The following is a revolutionary tale from Baba’s story book:

“O prince ! Now there is no way to recede or retreat. Now we will have to fight with him face to face. Don’t worry at all. We four will create a stir among the young people 14 and they will help you in large numbers. Though the demons are powerful, they are very few in number. If human beings have a proper understanding of their rights, and unitedly stand to establish these rights, all the strength of the demons will disappear just like a piece of straw before a current!”

The four friends of the prince then set out on their respective duties. They sent the message of a famous poet of the Kingdom of Light to all the young people of that country. “Awake, brothers and sisters! Today you will have to awake and stand up against the tyranny of the demons! You will have to stand unitedly to fight against them. The hollow message of peace is meaningless today. As long as the demons are alive, the message of peace is sweet to hear, but is of no use to the society.

“The forces of destruction are spreading venom in all directions. The sweet gospels of peace have been reduced to mockery. Before I depart I send my clarion call to those who have been preparing themselves, in every home, for the battle against the demons.

“The huge wastes of the villains will never add any glorious chapter to human history.”

Young people joined the struggle in large numbers. They said, “We have promised our everything to bring an end to the reign of the demons. We have borne tyranny for a long time – but no more! Wearing ragged clothes we have supplied the commodities of enjoyment for the demons – but no more. We want to lead a life worth living. All the wealth of this universe is the common property of all living beings. We won’t tolerate deception any longer! We want food, clothes, shelter, medicine and education. We want to lead an honourable life.”

The prince said, “These are the very words I wanted to hear from you. We want the end of the Demonic Rule. But before discharging the final blow, the opponent party should be given a chance to amend itself; that’s why we want to give the Strange Demon a chance.” (1)

Unique quality of humans

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "People recollect the tasty dishes they once relished and derive pleasure from that. Other people delight in feeding others. They offer rasagollás or sweets, and at the time of giving, imagine that their guest is enjoying the same delightful taste, the same sweet vibration from the rasagollás which they once relished when they ate them. A host feels mental satisfaction by imagining that the guest’s mind is full of those pleasing vibrations. The host wants the guest to enjoy more and more of those delightful vibrations, and therefore asks the guest to accept the offer of more rasagollás. So, one enjoys pleasure in two ways. The human mind has two contradictory inherent tendencies: one of acquisition, the other of sacrifice. The more one advances along the path of evolution, the more the tendency, the spirit of sacrifice, becomes prominent." (1)

Two opposing scenarios to derive happiness

In His above teaching Baba is illustrating two opposition psychologies:
(A) The science behind why people feel mental satisfaction by feeding delicious food to others.
(B) The mentality of those who themselves eat delicious food yet do not desire to feed others.

In the first scenario, people derive great happiness from feeding others a tasty meal. But how exactly does this work? What is happening in the mind. Well, suppose one day Govinda ate a sumptuous meal which he enjoyed very much. Then a week or a month later, Govinda prepares and serves that same type of food to his friend Tanmay. The meal is delicious and Tanmay enjoys every morsel. But that is not all. Govinda himself derives great mental pleasure in feeding Tanmay, even though he (Govinda) is not eating. How does this happen? In his own mind, Govinda recollects how much he enjoyed that meal, and he thinks that just as he enjoyed it, similarly Tanmay is also enjoying that meal. This creates a sympathetic vibration in Govinda's mind and he feels great psychic fulfillment. So Govinda is taking delight in sacrificing and serving Tanmaya.

In contrast, in this second scenario, Liilamaya, cooks food for himself and eats it all himself. And he becomes happy thinking how much he enjoyed the food. In this case, Liilamaya is deriving enjoyment from directly eating that food; he does not want to share it with others. There is no spirit of sacrifice, rather he delights in acquiring that food and filling his own belly.

So there are two different approaches:
1. A person derives happiness by sacrificing and watching others enjoy that food.
2. Another becomes happy by direct acquisition, by tasting that food themselves, i.e. greedy.

It all depends on the level of one's sadhana and mental standard etc.

Conclusion

These two - sacrificing vs acquiring - are radically different psychologies. And they are not related solely with food, but with all kinds of indulgences and offerings. Some gain pleasure from acquiring something directly, and some become happy by sacrificing and watching others enjoy.

Finally Baba explains that the path of sacrifice is the higher path and as people develop, the more they will adhere to the path of sacrifice.

So be careful, by seeing another’s behaviour you can determine in which group a person falls.

in Him,
Prakash

Replacing sadhana? + 3 more

Baba
Replacing sadhana?

Namaskar,

Around the globe, in various religions, there is a tradition to go to a place of worship, such as a temple, mosque, synagogue. Or they attend some meeting of religious scholars or leaders like the rabbi, pope, Shankaracarya, purodha pramukha, mullah etc and listen to their sermon. They might go occasionally or on a particular day of worship. In all these cases, attendees believe that by this way they will accrue enough virtue to reach heaven, or they will exhaust their samskaras or sin and reach the final ultimate state. But this is just 100% dogma.

These types of satsaunga are only important if they are based on rational teachings, grounded in logic and reasoning. Then it may help in some regards to make their life better; but, in any case, it cannot substitute sadhana. So those thinking that listening to some sermons or reading some books is enough are in a confused state, or living in a fool's paradise.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Here I am not talking about reading and listening to those illogical, outdated, irrational, communal ideas propagated by religious priests. Such teachings are categorically harmful. Here I am talking about reading or listening to the sermon of good dharmic teachings from the vedas, upanishads, or even Ananda Marga philosophy. Even these studies cannot be a substitute for sadhana. No doubt, the study of dharmic scripture is important; that is svadhyaya. But one has to do sadhana as well. Without sadhana, one will not get anything. This letter discusses Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji’s teachings in this regard.

Tall religious overtures will not do

Ananda Marga ideology, “The Supreme dharma – the paramount act, of merging one's self in the Absolute Entity in full realization of Its charm, will not be accomplished by mere listening to religious dissertations. You must have noticed, there are many people in our society that constantly keep track of "great men" and run up to them soliciting, “Give us some advice. Tell us something about religion.” Such religious discourses will cut no ice, if not substantiated by sádhaná. It is wrong to think that Parama Puruśa is realizable by man through empirical knowledge or through study of a few dozens of philosophical books, rather, there is a greater possibility of one's receding from the path of spirituality. In such a case vanity becomes the chief characteristic of his nature. Brahma or the Supreme Entity cannot be attained through tall religious overtures to the human society nor through interesting recapitulations before it as to which and which great man said such and such things – as to how they walked, or through writing volumes of books. Do not entertain such silly ideas that you can hit the bull's eye so cheaply by dint of your intellect, for you shall not achieve Him through such shady means.” (1)

All acknowledge the great value of sadhana, and the importance of performing spiritual practices regularly, according to the Ananda Marga system. Yet, there are a few who only think about doing sadhana, without ever really sitting down to do meditation. They read about sadhana or talk with others about spirituality etc, but they never seem to get the time to sit for longer periods of meditation, and immerse the mind in extended sadhana sessions.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Here below Baba gives the teaching that merely reading and talking about spiritual discourses will not bring one closer to the Goal, i.e. Parama Purusa. To gain success in spiritual life one must commit themselves to the practice of sadhana.

    "Na'yama'tma' balahiinena labhyah..."

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The A'tma'n cannot be attained by the immoralist or the materialist. And the one who listens to learned discourses or reads the scriptures in the hope of realizing the A'tma'n with the help of keen intellect will surely be disappointed."
"How can one know the A'tma'? The answer is, by performing spiritual practice (sa'dhana') with devotion and sincerity. For human beings spiritual practice in individual life is mandatory. Without sa'dhana' one cannot expect to make any progress. If one learns the secrets of spiritual practice from a learned preceptor and practices regularly one will realize intuitively the existence of the Supreme Cognitive Faculty." (2)

Jackals’ sermons?

According to Baba, dedicated and sustained efforts in the discipline of meditation are needed in order to advance along the spiritual path. Without sadhana, progress is impossible and one will not reach unto Him. Here again in the following passage Baba emphasizes the need to deeply engage in sadhana with a strong desire to get Parama Purusa.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "To realize Him one must direct all one's sentiments and propensities - in fact the entire psychic flow with its integral outlook - towards one's inner existence. Only on this path of supreme synthesis can human beings attain the Supreme Entity and transcend the bondages of pain and pleasure, old age, death, etc." (3)

In so many ways we can see that sadhana is the key for spiritual growth. Without doing deep sadhana, one will not be able to realize Parama Purusa.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “You must have heard the story of the Vedantist jackal. Listening to the discourses of the panditas (erudite scholars), the jackal too started preaching in his own society that he was not a jackal but the living Brahma, to be adored and revered by all. The state of those who having read a few pages of a book, dream of salvation without doing any sádhana, is similar to that of the Vedantist jackal. Actually mere talk is of no avail; establishing oneself in consciousness is what is important. To think oneself an MA is useless. Only after striving hard and passing the MA exam does the sense of being an MA become established in the mind, and will the talk of being an MA be justified.” (4)

Jiṋániis & karmiis have no future

Ananda Marga ideology states, “By individual effort it is very difficult to surmount that ocean of Máyá. For the jiṋániis, the intellectuals, the Goal is merely theoretical and impersonal. How can they expect a theoretical and impersonal entity to help them – and how can the jiṋániis even approach Him when for them His very existence is impersonal? So the jiṋániis, although they have recognized the importance of jiṋána or knowledge, have no future. They simply waste their valuable time, which is a very short span of hardly one hundred years.”
“And for the karmiis or people of action, the desideratum is partly personal and partly impersonal, but the link between the impersonal and the personal undergoes some distortion. With the help of this distorted link, how can they expect to receive perennial grace for their spiritual progress from the Supreme, and how can they struggle against the all-pervading influence of Máyá? So the karmiis having no fixed desideratum and no fixed personal goal, no personal God, also have no future. The future is with the devotees and with no one else.” (5)

Conclusion

So one should read or listen to the spiritual teachings of Ananda Marga philosophy; that is very important and known as svadhyaya. Yet as much as this practice will help in sadhana, it is not a substitute for sadhana. First and foremost, one has to do committed sadhana. That is the central idea of Guru’s teachings which He has presented in various discourses.

How we approach sadhana

Sadhana is the main ingredient of spiritual life. In our Ananda Marga sadhana is a very systematic approach. In our twice daily meditation, first we sit in the proper posture like padmasana. We place the hands in the lap, keep the spine straight, close the eyes, fold back the tongue, and shut down the external senses by performing the three shuddhis as we embark on our meditation. By His grace, we bring the mind to one particular point, cultivate that great devotional feeling of loving Him, and ensconce the mind mantra japa. When doing first lesson the mind is seated in the ista cakra and when doing dhyana the mind is absorbed in Guru cakra. This every practitioner of sahaja yoga understands. And in a nutshell this is how we approach our regular sadhana practice.

Your mystical songs

"Ga'ner parash da'o pra'n'er pare shya'mal cha'ye..." (Prabhat Samgiita #1405)

Purport:

Please touch my soul with Your songs, spreading Your divine love through the medium of Your music. It is like the soothing shade of the greenery in summertime; Your journey knows no bounds. You go on singing Your charming compositions non-stop.

The day before anything was created, You were also present. That very time Your sadhana was also existing. In that era, You were the sadhaka, the Goal, and the sadhana, as well as the tunes of eternity. You were everything all wrapped together - all in one.

Baba, the day when things will no longer exist, that very time also You will be present and remain ever-brilliant. Then also Your sadhana will exist. Your exquisite refulgence will also remain along with You, in that unknown abode. Your infinite melodies will also be with You.

Baba, with the subtle vibrations of Your mystical songs, You touch my heart, awaken bhakti, and make my life successful…

Why no shortage of energy

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Because each and everybody in this universe gets energy from Parama Purusa, He is the Supreme Source of energy.”

“This earth and all the other planets and satellites of this solar system get their energy from the sun. The sun is the source of their energy. But He is the source of the sun’s energy. And that’s why He is jvalantam.”

“And that’s why I have said that there won’t be any thermal death of this universe. Because He is jvalantam, He is present, and He will be present forever. So there won’t be any shortage of energy in this cosmic system, though there may be a shortage of energy in some particular portion of the earth or the cosmos.” (1)
