Watch out before consuming

Baba

Watch out before consuming

Namaskar,

In our Ananda  Marga we aim to develop ourselves in all the three realms: Physical, psychic, & spiritual. All are aware of this common fact and every Ananda Margii takes proper care to follow it to the best of their ability. Now and again, we hear about the negative qualities of company food products, i.e. processed foods that come in a box and or "natural foods" injected with steroids and chemicals etc.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

This is a growing area of concern as more of the world's population becomes engrossed in the capitalistic lifestyle of running hither and thither all day and eating something pre-packaged from a box whenever hunger calls. Many, even in India, are losing the basic skill of how to cook and prepare fresh food.

For this reason, all the areas of our diet & food which we generally consider as sentient need careful evaluation. Due to the negative practices of capitalist companies that are only interested in their bottom-line, i.e. profits, one must be very cautious about consuming genetically impaired foods which are commonly sold in the market.

As a general guideline, we know that the more processed a food is, the greater the influence a company wields in altering the food. However even direct farm-grown products such as fruits and vegetables are likely to be treated with poisonous, and in some cases, structure-altering substances. All this is described below.

Dairy products and bovine growth hormones

First though, one area of great concern is with dairy products as today's cows are given all kinds of bovine hormones.

Dairy farmers use an array of chemicals and antibiotics on their cows. This is for two reasons: (1) the overcrowded and poor living conditions of the cows in the dairy cause frequent widespread disease among the herd (flock of cows); and (2) the farmers' desire to produce huge amounts of milk to get more money. As we know, the sole motive in capitalism is to earn more money. So cows are given bovine growth hormones to multiply their milk production, and to prevent food poisoning of old and dirty products. More about all this is written in Note 2 below.

So many chemicals given to cows

About twenty different antibiotics / poisons and over thirty other drugs / poisons and chemicals are legal for use on dairy cows in Western countries. And because of capitalistic influence in the society, those chemicals are approved by the democratic government of their respective country.

Baba addresses this in Prout: Capitalist exploitation occurs mostly in democratic countries. Democratic rule is the best suited for capitalist exploitation where capitalists can purchase the leaders with their money and get the laws passed in their favour of their business. This it the way political lobbying works: Those with the most money get their interests met.

Regarding cow's milk, these capitalists have passed regulations approving the use of more than 50 types of chemicals. The aim is to prevent food poisoning of old, rotten food. But these chemicals themselves are poisonous for human consumption.

Unfortunately, the general public is not aware about this fact. And on the milk packaging or container it is also not mentioned. They only write as - "government board approved". By seeing that deceptive and misleading label, nobody can understand what really is inside the milk. But if anybody has more interest, they will communicate with different labs and consumer advocacy groups and get the truth. And then they will have the same picture described above.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The only intention here is to write the fact and put forth the situation as it is, so interested sadhakas can follow their pramitahara / proper diet for their all-round development and final success.

Milk can be taken
only if produced humanely

Baba has given that milk is sentient and appropriate for human consumption as per Caryacarya, Yogic Treatments, and different discourses. But the type of milk which Baba is talking about is not widely available in this exploitative, capitalist era.

Generally, such type of milk only one can be gotten when one is living in a far remote place, and the cows are living in a natural condition in the open sky, grazing directly from the ground, and not eating chemicals - i.e. where those cows are leading a good and healthy life with proper care and hygiene. Then that type of milk is the real milk which Baba is talking about. And if anybody drinks that it will give a different - i.e. positive - effect.

But unfortunately, because of capitalistic influence, the milk and milk products that are mass-produced today are completely poisoned.

We should not forget that Baba has warned in Prout discourses that, essential commodities -- food etc -- must not be allowed to be produced by capitalist enterprises. Otherwise they will create a huge problem. And we can see these days, such a problem is now on our head. And so we should be careful.

Food affects you
physically, psychically & spiritually

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Physical food is not simply for the physical body. It has got its effect on the spiritual body. The cells of your physical body are created from the cells that you receive from your physical food, and your psychic body is also influenced by these cells. So while taking food, you should be very careful. You should always try to take sentient food." (1)

How companies irradiate your food

In recent years, companies in various countries have begun the practice of food irradiation. With the goal, to prevent food poisoning. By exposing food to high doses of radiation, companies can prevent or delay the growth of bacteria and mold. The doses of irradiation applied to food exceed that in chest x-rays by 10 million to 100 million times. And in many cases, the companies are not required to state on the package even, that the food has been irradiated. This is the under-handedness of capitalism. To protect the moneyed interests of large companies, they are allowed to irradiate the public food -- including fruits and vegetables -- under the table without informing people what they are eating. And irradiating food changes the basic structure of the food. It is completely negative.

Exploitation of cows in factory farms

Please read the following and consider how far this type of treatment is consistent with neo-humanism as well as what effect such products have on our human health.

The Dairy Industry: Cows Used For Their Milk

~ Courtesy of PETA ~
Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do: to nourish their young. In order to force the animals to continue giving milk, factory farm operators typically impregnate them using artificial insemination every year. Calves are generally taken from their mothers within a day of being born—males are destined for veal crates or barren lots where they will be fattened for beef, and females are sentenced to the same fate as their mothers.

After their calves are taken from them, mother cows are hooked up, several times a day, to milking machines. Using genetic manipulation, powerful hormones, and intensive milking, factory farmers force cows to produce about 10 times as much milk as they would naturally.

Animals are often dosed with bovine growth hormone (BGH), which contributes to a painful inflammation of the udder known as "mastitis." (BGH is used widely in the U.S. but has been banned in Europe and Canada because of concerns over human health and animal welfare.) According to the industry's own figures, between 30 and 50 percent of dairy cows suffer from mastitis, an extremely painful condition.

A cow's natural lifespan is about 25 years, but cows used by the dairy industry are killed after only four or five years. An industry study reports that by the time they are killed, nearly 40 percent of dairy cows are lame because of the intensive confinement, the filth, and the strain of being almost constantly pregnant and giving milk. Dairy cows' bodies are turned into soup, companion animal food, or low-grade hamburger meat because their bodies are too "spent" to be used for anything else. (Courtesy of PETA)

Related teachings

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In order to have a balanced mind and to progress spiritually, human beings will have to pay attention to the qualities of the food they eat. The idea that “I will just do my sádhaná and eat any food, proper or improper” will not do." (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “It will not do to simply eat what you get or do what you desire. When you eat you must consider if it is sentient, mutative or static. While eating you must think carefully as to what influence it will have over your body and your mind. You are not a goat or a camel that you will eat whatever you get. You have to think when you act.” (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "As a result of eating sentient food and performing spiritual practices, the cells of the human body become sentient." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "If cells are affected by food and water, and if the nature of the cells affects the nature of the human mind, obviously human beings should eat the correct diet, because food and mind are closely related to each other. Any food item, whether good or bad, must not be taken indiscriminately because it may lead to mental degeneration. Sincere spiritual aspirants must follow the dictum: Áhárashuddhao sattvashudhih [“A sentient diet produces a sentient body”]. Only food which is helpful in keeping the body and mind sentient should be eaten." (5)

Common misunderstanding + 2 more

Baba

Common misunderstanding

Namaskar,

Occult means that which is gotten via the practice of cult. Whereas Parama Purusa is the creator of occult powers. By definition, He inherently has them all. Every quality and attribution is already in His mind. So He does not need to do the practice of cult in order to have those qualities. Already they are a part of Him. For Parama Purusa Baba we cannot say He has "occult powers". Verily, it is wholly improper because those qualities are His inherent characteristics - not something acquired through the practice of cult.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com

Cannot say He has a lot of knowledge

In the same way, some wrongly proclaim that Baba has a lot of knowledge. But that is not appropriate. Baba has created this world; already everything is in His mind. The acquisition of knowledge does not apply to Parama Purusa. Knowledge is the internal subjectivization of external objectivity - i.e. understanding something about the external world.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “What is knowledge? Knowledge is subjectivization of external objectivity.” (1)

In the case of Parama Purusa, nothing is external to His mind. So there is no question of Him acquiring knowledge etc. For Him, we cannot say He has "a lot of knowledge." And in the same way, for Him we cannot say He has "occult powers".

Ananda Marga ideology says, "For living beings, omniscience is certainly a recognised occult power. That is right. But for the Supreme Entity it is not a recognised occult power; He does not get it as a result of cult...To know everything is His nature. That is why He is omniscient." (2)

So we cannot say He has "occult powers". Nor that He "uses occult powers". Rather we should say that "Baba graces". And indeed, microvita is nothing but His grace.

Baba is omniscient & omnipotent

Here is more about how we can think about this topic. The entire creation lies within the mind of Parama Purusa so Parama Purusa sees everything. It is all in His mind. Whereas human beings acquire knowledge from outside themselves. For a person to know something then they must look outside the scope and periphery of their own mind. But with Parama Purusa nothing is outside His mind. That means that He does not 'know' anything; rather He sees everything as it is all going on within His own mind.

He has His own characteristic: He controls all - so He does not need any cult. For Parama Purusa, there is no question of occult power. His power has nothing to do with cult. It is just like, Parama Purusa does not have any jinana (knowledge). What He has is not what we call as jinana. Similarly, what He has is not occult power. He did not get his power by practicing cult.

Conclusion

In the past and in the present also, many avidya tantrikas have been using their occult powers to enhance their prestige and for getting name and fame etc; and in consequence they get degenerated. In this material world occult power is recognised by the "show" of those who possess them. Because of doing sadhana, they get occult power. But in the case of Parama Purusa, such powers are His inherent and intrinsic quality. He need not to practice any cult in order to get those things.

The term 'occult' means those powers which are acquired through the practice of cult. But in the case of degenerated human beings especially, to gain prestige amongst the common innocent mass or their disciples, such avidya tantrikas do like this. Their motive is bad, self-centered, ego-centered. So by that type of show, their degeneration occurs from human structure to lifeless matter. Ananda Marga philosophy never appreciates this type of show of occult powers.

Everybody knows that Baba does not present miracles to show his greatness - not did He go in public and do occult powers. At the same time, Without a practical demonstration of His spiritual philosophy, people would have thought that those concepts were merely myths. So by giving demonstrations in front of sadhakas only, then every disciple clearly understood that Baba's spiritual teachings were something very real and practical.

Kala’

Misuse of occult powers brings ruination

Prabhat Samgiita #3333 reveals what happens to those who long for occult powers:

“- Aes't'ashvaryya tumi cha'r'a'... kare viveka-ha'ra' -“

Purport: Those who use occult powers destroy themselves. They do all kinds of degrading and harmful things. In showing off their occult powers, they end up harming others. They invite negative samskaras and are degenerated into stone, wood, or mud. Instead of serving others, those lusting after occult powers demean and hurt innocent people and ruin themselves.

Occult powers are like dust of the earth

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Hence the spiritual aspirant must not run after these inconsequential occult powers, although while prasticing spiritual cult they may develop. You must not forget that all your achievements must maintain adjustment with the main propensities of the mind, and in the process of adjustment, all these eight types of occult powers present themselves to the spiritual aspirant.” (3)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “While practising spiritual cult, it should be remembered that spiritual aspirants must not practise in order to acquire these occult powers. The goal of spiritual practice is to realize the Supreme Entity. To search for any other thing is wrong. Occult powers are just like the dust on the roadside. The attraction for Parama Puruśa is the most valuable object – all else is only the dust of the earth.” (4)

You took advent as Mahasambhuti

Note: Only those who sincerely practice the higher lessons of sahaja yoga meditation can understand this song in the depths of their heart.

"Yugántarer tamasá náshite, álor jhalake esechile..." (Prabhat Samgiita #4718)

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, to eliminate the darkness piled up over the ages, You came in the flow of light. In those dark days of the distant past the whole society was drowned in dogma and everyone was suffering in pain and agony. In that desperate moment, in a flash of lightening - floating in the rhythm of dance, You took advent as Mahasambhuti. You came and showered Your grace to wipe away the age-old staticity and inundate this earth with bhakti.

Baba, O’ Parama Purusa, before Your auspicious arrival, it was very bleak; there was no positive pulsation of life. Just there was sorrow and misery in every direction. People were depressed. The society was submerged in the murkiness of materialism and selfishness. There was greediness, in-fighting, and hatred all around.  Nobody had the stamina to shake the struggling humanity from its inertia. No one valiantly came forward and declared, “Arise, awake, the new dawn has come! Get rid of all dogma and follow the path of neo-humanism!” No one called out, “Always keep the great ideology in mind: True progress is only when one is advancing towards divinity, Supreme fulfillment, and the Cosmic Entity.”

Baba, Your victorious chariot is fast moving forward, with its rattling sound, in the bhuloka, duloka, and triloka and throughout the infinite arena. Your exquisite vibration is reaching each and every corner of this vast cosmos. The entire universe is being transformed in all the realms: physical, psychic, and spiritual. O’ Parama Purusa, You told everyone this eternal truth, “In your frustration do not sit and cry in the depths of hell. Arise, awake, and follow the sublime path. Human life is very valuable and you must not forget that Your destination is Parama Purusa.” Baba, You bestowed this magnificent and blessing upon all.

O’ Parama Purusa, You came and wiped away all the darkness by infusing Your endless effulgence. It is Your grace, it is Your grace...

Note about Prabhat Samgiita #4718:

The below passage from Ananda Marga ideology following discourse expresses the conclusive idea of this Prabhat Samgiita.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "O human beings, you are fortunate. The clarion call of the Universal has reached you. Not only has the call come, but you are hearing it and it is vibrating in every cell of your body. Will you now lie in the corner of your house as an inert being and waste your time by clinging to old skeletons and bemoaning them? The Supreme Being is calling you in the  roar of the ocean, in the thunder of the clouds, in the speed of lightning, in the meteor's flaming fires. Nothing good will come from idleness. Get up and awake the clouded chivalry of your dormant youth. It may be that the path is not strewn with flowers and that inferiority complex will be attempting to hold fast your each advancing step, but even then you have to proceed onwards tearing the shroud of darkness. You will tear the thick darkness of despair as you advance in the racing chariot radiant with the Sun's brilliance towards the attainment of the Supreme state." (1)

Those same divine ideas which Sadguru has given in His various discourses are also present in Prabhat Samgiita. That means the ideas which have been given in prose have also been given in the music and poetry of Prabhat Samgiita. The main difference between Ananda Marga ideological discourses and Prabhat Samgiita is that Prabhat Samgiita is quite concentrated. Those teachings of Prabhat Samgiita are presented in a very condensed form - such as in half a line or less; whereas in Ananda Marga discourses that same idea might be explained over the course of several pages or more. That is why without proper translations and purports, Prabhat Samgiita is often unintelligible.

Shamitananda missed the boat

Baba

Shamitananda missed the boat

Namaskar,

Dogma is pervasive across the religions, capitalism, materialism, and throughout society. Only Ananda Marga ideology is 100% dogma-free.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru Baba says, "Ananda Marga alone is dharma and all the rest are sectisms." (1)

We usually think that no Ananda Margii believes in any dogma - at least theoretically and philosophically. But if you look around there are a few dogmas in vogue. See if you know anyone who falls in this category or not: Some think that Prabhat Samgiita is exclusively Bengali.

However, after a basic philological analysis, we can easily reach the conclusion that Prabhat Samgiita is primarily based on the Saḿskrta language. In addition there are many compositions from Prabhat Samgiita collection which have been written in various local languages other than Bengali such as Bhojpuri, Urdu, Hindi, and English among others. By and large, Prabhat Samgiita is dominated by Saḿskrta vocabulary and some compositions are purely Saḿskrta. So those who think that Prabhat Samgiita is only Bengali suffer from one dogma.

Confusion - 1

Here are more key facts how Prabhat Samgiita etc., such as His books on philology, are also based on Saḿskrta, not Bengali exclusively.

#1: Mostly the words of Prabhat Samgiita are in Saḿskrta, while many case endings and verb endings are Bengali. That is why those only aware about Bengali do not understand certain words or terms used in Prabhat Samgiita. Although the Bengali language has a high degree of Saḿskrta vocabulary, it must be remembered that many of the Indian languages also contain a high percentage of Saḿskrta words. So Bengali is not unique in this regard.

Understanding Prabhat Samgiita is easy for those well-versed in Saḿskrta words, with some knowledge of Bengali. Whereas those only familiar with the Bengali language do not know certain terms of Saḿskrta. So they do not understand Prabhat Samgiita fully. As we know, in PS various terms related with many other languages also used. That is why some Bengali-knowing people can get confused when trying to understand Prabhat Samgiita. See the example presented down below in this email.

#2: The same is the case with the book Varna Vijiana. Here Baba is demonstrating how the grammar and history of most of the languages are linked with each other. So we cannot label Varna Vijiana as being only about the Bengali language. Baba's Saḿskrta grammar books (Varna Vijian'na) are not just a review of Bengali grammar, exclusively. Anyone who has studied this series will easily understand that this is about Saḿskrta grammar, along with so many other languages.

Confusion - 2

#3: Here are some further points about Varna Vijiana:
(a) This examines the grammar of all the languages in a general, broad-based way.
(b) It is Saḿskrta because it is linked with languages of the entire globe.
(d) So this book Varna Vijia'na is not exclusively Bengali grammar.

#4: If anybody very carefully reads the Shabda Cayanika series (which has been partially translated into English and Hindi), it is quite evident that Shabda Cayanika is not a series exclusively on Bengali grammar. Baba offered a way how to use Saḿskrta words in Indo-Aryan languages, and He discussed the relationship between Old Latin, Latin, and English, as well as hundreds of other languages etc. In addition, in this series Baba created a pathway for making new words. Because Saḿskrta does not have its own script so Baba used the Bengali script and the medium of the Bengali language to talk about Saḿskrta, and related topics. No one could have understood it if it was all in Saḿskrta.

These are some of the existing dogmas, surrounding the Bengali language in our present Ananda Marga Pracaraka samgha.

One Dada’s amusing blunder error

Some Bengali language knowing people get confused about Prabhat Samgiita: For example, one Dada - whose mother tongue is Bengali - created a Prabhat Samgiita dictionary that contains numerous misunderstandings and wrong definitions of terms used in Prabhat Samgiita. And not only that, in his confusion, this Dada invented one completely bogus term. Here is how it happened.

Dada S was reviewing Prabhat Samgiita #2029, when he came across a term: gulba'giica'y. This is not a Bengali word but this Dada gave it a ridiculous definition and tried to add this term to the Bengali language. Here is how this happened.

Bangla term ‘Gul’ vs Persian term ‘Gul’

First however, let us look at the real meaning of the term: gulba'giica'y. It is comprised of two words: (a) gul and (b) ba'giica'y. Gul is a Persian term meaning rose. And ba'giica' is a Persian term meaning garden. So the real meaning of the term gulba'giica'y in Prabhat Samgiita #2029 is a beautiful, aromatic rose garden.

But see how this Dada got confused. And it all happened because he thought Prabhat Samgiita is exclusively Bengali. As we saw above, the term gulba'giica'y is composed of two words. And the second term, ba'giica', meaning garden, migrated into the Bengali language along with a new case ending -ya, meaning in.

So Dada S was aware about the term ba'giica'y but he could not figure out the term gul which has been used in Prabhat Samgiita. In his mind he thought that PS is 100% Bangla so he explained gul in the following manner. And that is quite hilarious.

Hilarious

In Bengali areas, the term gul is widely used in most every household. And gul refers to one very messy black compound. Throughout Bengal, the female running the house mixes mud with the dust of coal dust to make a round piece that burns in their open stove. When burned this gul creates a lot of smoke initially and then becomes fire for cooking food, morning and evening. So that round little coal dust ball which is black, dirty, and very dusty and messy, and which is prepared by hand is called ’gul'. Because gul is too dirty and messy to prepare inside the house, it is prepared in a separate area just outside the house, on the porch or under tree.

So in his ignorance, Dada S used the Bengali meaning of the word gul and added it to ba'giica'y and he created one completely fake term that makes no sense in Prabhat Samgiita. Dada S defined this term as being one coal dust garden, i.e. a messy, toxic place where all the dirty, black soot is burned. The Prabhat Samgiita composition is about one delightful rose garden whereas Dada S’s definition is about one dirty, disgusting, coal repository, i.e. coal dust garden.

Again, if you stick the two terms together, (i.e. gul and ba'giica'y) it means absolutely nothing in Bengali. Because gulba'giica'y is not a word in Bengali. But Dada S made it into a word and gave it an absurd definition in his Bengali dictionary.

Dictionary has countless flops

Those with a broader view realise that the gul is the Persian term meaning rose. So it is a rose garden, not a black, sooty, filthy, coal and ash bin. Can you imagine how in the song this is described as one beautiful place, i.e. a rose garden, and this Dada bound by his myopic perspective thought it was that nasty, dirty, smelly, pit used for burnt coal etc. In this way Dada’s whole book / dictionary has countless flops, all due to the misconception that Prabhat Samgiita is Bengali exclusively when in fact this is not the case.

It is not bad that Dada had the idea to create a Bangla-English dictionary for Prabhat Samgiita terms. But what he made is not proper as he failed to realise that Prabhat Samgiita is not exclusively Bengali, but also based in other languages, especially Saḿskrta. Since Shamitananda Dada suffers from the dogma that Prabhat Samgiita is Bengali exclusively, therefore he did not go in deeper aspect. And in his dogmatic way Dada Shamitananda concluded that Gul-ba'giica'y means that dusty, dirty pit full of burnt coal that is prevalent in the villages.

Conclusion

Prabhat Samgiita is not based exclusively on the Bengali language, but incorporates many of the world’s languages, especially Saḿskrta / Sanskrit. So if anyone takes a myopic view of Prabhat Samgiita, or the other literature of Ananda Marga ideology, thinking it to be exclusively based on the Bengali language, they are bound to walk away with a dogmatic, faulty understanding. And that is exactly what happened with one Dada who tried to created a dictionary for terms used in Prabhat Samgiita. More about this is below.

How to solve this crisis + 3 more

Baba

How to solve this crisis

Namaskar,

Baba warned us in 1989 that deep well irrigation is very bad for the environment, soil, and subterranean aquifers. Such wells disrupt the whole ecological balance. And in the last 28 years the problem has reached its tipping point. We are on the verge of a veritable crisis.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Many places now are crippled by a severe drought. The water table has become so low and depleted that they are imposing strict regulations on deep well irrigation. And this same problem is prevalent across the Indian subcontinent and around the globe.

So how should we respond? For farmers the situation is more complex and needs to be addressed on a greater level. But for ordinary citizens there are many simple choices one can make that will put less stress on those deep wells. First one has to realise that those deep wells do not get refilled quickly. It takes thousands of years for water to filter down into those deep aquifers. Most of the water just gets evaporated or runs off to the oceans.

In 1989 and in years prior Baba warned us repeatedly about impending environmental and ecological disasters, including the water crisis. Yet, most people did not take it seriously. And certainly the general populace remained unaware or aloof of Baba’s declarations. But now all those points are have come to the fore. An ecological disaster and water crisis is looming large. Vast areas of the globe are undergoing desertification. If the situation is not fully controlled soon the very survival of humanity will be at stake.

Entire population will die

So a crisis has come because the subterranean aquifers are not replenished as quickly as they are depleted. If all the water is removed from beneath the ground, the entire population will die. The lower the underground water levels become, the more dangerous it gets. First the plant life in that area will die, then rain clouds will cease to form over that area, then desertification sets in, and in its climax animal life and human life are threatened.

On the individual level one must curtail water consumption, especially if that water source is a deep well. And we should bring awareness to this issue as far as possible - propagating Baba’s guidelines. One should be part of the solution - not the problem.

Well irrigation: fertile region transformed to desert

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “I have already said that constructing more deep tube wells is not the solution to the water crisis. What are the drawbacks of well irrigation? Well irrigation causes the level of the water-table to drop, while the continuous use of well irrigation dries up the subterranean flow of water. Initially the effects of continuous well irrigation may not be easy to perceive, but eventually a fertile region will be transformed into a desert. In fact, if the subterranean water level stays at above twenty to twenty-five feet, the surface vegetation will not be affected, but if it drops below fifty feet, the surface of the earth will become a barren wasteland.” (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states:
"Question – What are the drawbacks of well irrigation?

"Answer – Well irrigation causes the level of the water table to go down until the subterranean flow of water eventually dries up. Shortages of water due to well irrigation are not easily perceptible."

"The negative effects of well irrigation include the following:"

"(1) All neighbouring shallow wells dry up creating the problem of the lack of drinking water."

"(2) Trees, orchards and large plants don’t get sufficient water so they may wither and die. Green countryside will become a desert after 30 to 45 years of intensive well irrigation." (2)

Deep tube wells: minerals harmful to soil
mix with water causing salinity

Ananda Marga philosophy states:
"(3) In some deep tube wells elements or minerals which are harmful to the soil get mixed with the water, causing salinity, for example. As a result the land becomes unfit for cultivation and eventually becomes infertile."

"(4) When the flow of well-water stops, irrigation tanks supplied by these wells also dry up."

"Thus, well irrigation should be used only as a temporary measure because of the devastating effects it can have on the surrounding environment. Alternative methods of irrigation are river irrigation, irrigation from reservoirs, shift irrigation and lift irrigation." (3)

Well irrigation: grain crops & fruit orchards wither & die

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The same amount of water which is brought to the surface does not seep back down into the water-table because much of the water dries up due to the hot sunshine or is absorbed by the trees and plants. Hence, the water-table is rapidly declining. If the practice of deep tube well irrigation continues in Malda, Nadia and other districts, the water-table will decline so much that one day there will be no water for irrigation, and the grain crops and fruit orchards will wither and die. The farmers must be very vigilant about this problem. The wisest approach is to depend upon surface water for irrigation.” (4)

Conclusion

The situation is dire. We as Ananda Margiis should each do what we can individually in our personal life and collectively. Every margii can help solve the matter to some degree by planting trees, conserving water, and propagating of Baba's teachings.

In my life I want only You, both in happiness & in sorrow

"Toma'ke ca'i a'mi jiivane, a'loke a'ndha're sabkha'ne..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3238)

Purport:

O' Parama Purusa, in my life I want only You, both in happiness and in sorrow. In the effulgence as well as in the darkness, on good days and bad ones, all the time, in all the places - everywhere. You are my everything. You have blessed me with the feeling that, "You are mine and mine alone." I want to keep You with me always. Please be gracious and remain in my heart eternally. You are with me now and will remain with me forever. You alone are mine - no one else.

O' Supreme Entity, Baba, I long for You in the depths of my being. Except You, I do not want any thing. You and I - the two of us - will remain in one corner of my deserted heart forever and ever. We will be there together, eternally. That is my longing; that is my desire. You are my shelter and You are the base of my life.

Those who went away in the past and those who will come in the future, I also speak on their behalf. I represent the feeling of their mind. Nobody is lowly or insignificant; everyone is Yours. All are part of one divine family. No one is downtrodden; all belong to You.

O' Parama Purusa, whatever right or wrong I do, by Your grace I always keep You in my mind, in my heart. I surrender unconditionally unto You. In my shravana and in my manana [1], I go on singing Your song - Your glory. It is Your blessing. Baba, Your qualities are endless and You have infinite forms. All the flora and fauna - all that is mobile and immobile - everything is part and parcel of Your cosmic expression. You are manifesting Yourself in countless ways, yet You remain mine and mine alone.

Baba, You are the Polestar of my life; You are my everything. Please keep me under Your shelter...

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #3238:

[1] Manana & Shravana: Here Baba explains both the special meaning and intrinsic value of the devotional practices of manan and shravan.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "To attain Him human beings have to take recourse to shravana (constantly hearing His name), manana (constantly ideating on Him) and nididya'sana (constantly meditating on Him). The Supreme Entity is Gurha, that is, He is lying hidden in the innermost recess of the human entity. To attain Him one must penetrate deep within oneself, and for that the development of an introversial outlook is essential." (Tattva Kaomudi-3)

Dogmatic idols should be preserved in museums

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, “Sometimes it so happens that people instead of convincing superstitious people, injure their sentiments by their behaviour. A perusal of history shows that the antagonists of idolatry have, on many occasions, destroyed beautiful temples which were unique examples of architecture. They destroyed the beautiful images which represented the expressions of sculptural art. All these acts are extremely violent, because they cause severe pain to the idolaters, and consequently the idol-worshippers adopt an obstinate attitude towards idols even though they are fully convinced that idol-worship is futile. As a result, not only is the spiritual progress of the idol-worshippers hampered, but the progress of the whole human society is retarded. It is worth noting that even if in any country all the people without exception give up idolatry, the spiritual aspirants, who follow the principles of Brahmacarya, will preserve images carefully in museums out of appreciation for sculpture and aesthetic taste. They will not destroy these beautiful works in any circumstances. Destroying a work of art also results in the destruction of the sense of subtle appreciation, and this is in no way proper.” (1)

Note: In the recent past, and in the Moghul period, Muslims rampantly and senselessly destroyed idols, and still around the world they are pulverizing idols and artistic religious artifacts etc. In our human history, Hindus also disfigured and destroyed Buddhist idols when Buddhism was banished from India. Now those very same idols are showcased and preserved around India in museums and other historical places.

In our Ananda Marga the approach is very different. Margiis will never do such adharmic things. Rather it is our duty to safeguard and preserve the fine arts - from all cultural and religions expressions. In the future when people are educated and follow neo-humanism and rational ideas, they will give up their idol worship and all those idols will be preserved in a museum - for the sake of history and aesthetic value.

Those who do not appreciate the fine arts become violent and vile. That is why our Ananda Marga philosophy encourages the fine arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, music, theatre, cartooning, drama, poetry, literature, and dance etc. At the same time, Ananda Marga teachings do not condone art for art’s sake. Instead the aim is art for “service and blessedness.”

Lastly, remember, degraded, vulgar, sensual, and crude expressions are not appreciated as fine art, rather they are pseudo-culture.

Unknown garbage + 4 more

Baba

Unknown garbage

Namaskar,

Ours is a spiritual society based on straightforwardness and selfless service. That is the essence of our tantra where all duplicity and selfishness are obliterated in favour of the broad-minded thinking of satya and caring for others. However, our Ananda Marga society is like an island surrounded by a bulky boat of capitalistic pseudo-culture.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

And this materialistic pseudo-culture is a dangerous thing. It seeps deep down within a person's psyche and colours their mind in such a degrading manner. It goes to the very root and envelops a person's mind, heart, and affects their manner of thinking and speaking, i.e. their entire personae.

Materialism pollutes the psyche

Materialism is a type of religion and way of life that strikes straight to the very bone and marrow of one's personality. It affects a person’s entire thought process, expressions, and actions. We can see this by the way people dress, how they view others, how they worry so much about money, how people become self-engrossed, and by all their ways of doing from  food habits to their speech patterns.

Here following are two materialistic phrases which are prevalent in today's use of the English language, i.e. today's lingua franca. Yet these two phrases embody all the narrow-mindedness of capitalism and undermine our spiritual values. We should be aware and not let pseudo-culture invade our own psychic domain or linguistic expression.

'Take care' phrase: dogma

The phrase, 'take care', stands as the epitome of selfishness and narrow-mindedness. Some may wonder what is wrong with this phrase - but that's because they are not aware of its actual meaning. The phrase 'take care' means 'take care of yourself.' And then over time it was just shortened to 'take care.' And the meaning above and beyond all else is 'look after yourself.' That stands in direct contrast to the code of tantra which guides people to live selflessly and serve others.

So the phrase, ‘take care’, is indicative of the I-centeredness of materialistic capitalism where people are so self-centered that they even brag about taking care of themselves. People will openly proclaim, "I am doing this for me", or they may say, "This is “me” time", or they may even thank themselves for being good to themselves. Indeed, this is a most self-centered era and the phrase 'take care" is reflective of this.

People may say, 'you have to take care', and by that way they mean, “Do not give money to others otherwise you may not have enough for yourself.” Or it may mean not giving an answer to a co-worker to solve a problem in order to show that you yourself are better and you should get the credit. Or it may mean so many things where one is completely protective of their own I-feeling and their own existence, at the expense of helping others.

It is no different from when people say, 'Look out for number 1'. And that number one is not God; it is not your family; and it is not your friends. Number one is oneself. That is the inherent selfishness of today's capitalistic pseudo-culture. Sadly, such is the meaning of the phrase, 'take care'. The phrase - 'take care' - reflects the very essence of a capitalistic way of thinking: Self-centeredness and grossly ego-centric. And this has nothing to do with our Ananda Marga way of life.

Service to others is the essence of life

The tantra of Ananda Marga is a service-oriented society based on helping and serving others where 'taking care of oneself' is not an endpoint in and of itself. Rather we take care of ourselves with the sole aim of being better to help others. In so many discourses, Baba declares that this is the spirit of society - helping others, not letting anyone lag behind. This is our tantra, this is our Marga, and this is what we are to teach the world.

In this below passage, Baba clearly depicts how the self-centered way of 'take care' as understood in today's materialistic culture has nothing to do with the formation of one healthy, human society. Because our way is to watch out and care for others and thereby creating unity and cohesiveness in our human society.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "What is society like? It is like a group of people going on a pilgrimage. Try to imagine the scene! Suppose one of the pilgrims is struck down by cholera. Will the rest of them continue on their way, leaving the sick man behind? No, that would be inconceivable for them. Rather, they will break their journey for a day or two, and cure him of his disease. If he is still too weak to walk they will carry him on their shoulders. If some people run short of food, others share what they have with them. Together they share their possessions, and together they march ahead, singing in unison. In their eagerness to move ahead with others they forget their trifling differences...The essence of cooperation resulting from this collective movement aims at expanding a person’s mind by striking down the barriers of meanness [and selfishness]. I repeat that a true society is like such a group of pilgrims who attain a deep psychic affinity while travelling together which helps them solve all the problems in their individual and social lives." (1)

By Baba's above analogy, it is quite clear that the selfish materialistic phrase, 'take care', has no place in our human outlook and we should be careful not to use this phrase as we do not want to give any credence to such an outlook. If we are not careful, our whole human personality will be tainted by pseudo-culture. So we should be vigilant by doing sadhana and keeping the mind clean, and at the same time use words and phrases that reflect the broad-minded, tantric culture of Ananda Marga.

Conclusion

We should keep our linguistic expression neat and clean and not fall prey to common expressions of capitalistic pseudo-culture.

Ananda Vanii says, "The most valuable treasures on the path of human progress are honesty, simplicity and spiritedness. In no stratum of life should you allow the standard of honesty to deteriorate. In no situation...should you indulge in diplomacy or duplicity. In other words you must keep yourself straight in all other strata just as in Sasta'unga Pran'a'ma, and remain vigilant that the fire of your spiritedness is under no circumstances buried beneath a heap of ashes. None of these three – honesty, simplicity or spiritedness – are found in dogma, hence you should strictly avoid dogma." (2)

~ In-depth study ~

Pseudo-culture is everywhere

Capitalist advertisements portray females as sex objects; people commonly eat junk food out of a box; and nearly the whole globe holds money as the be-all and end-all of life. Step by step, the world’s population is barraged by pseudo-culture. Some countries are more affected than others, but at the rate at which it is increasing, no one is safe. India, which rejected such pseudo-culture for generations and generations, is now fast falling prey to this debacle. Capitalist values are taking a strong hold in our India and pseudo-culture has gravely affected India's youth.

So no one is out of the loop; there is no place that is beyond the tentacles of pseudo-culture - every human being is susceptible.

Another bogus phrase: “Sounds good”

Now all around the globe people say, 'sounds good'. At first glance, it seems harmless enough. But beneath the words and letters is a superficiality and deceitfulness that can destroy the human personality. Because people resort to this phrase, 'sounds good', whenever they wish to agree to something which they do not truly agree with. That is when people have some other intention in mind yet want to keep that hidden, then they will use that phrase, 'sounds good'.

For example, if someone says, 'Can you help out in the service project this Saturday', and if the other person replies, 'sounds good', then it may seem like everything is fine and well and they will be at the service project. But in truth, that person who replied 'sounds good' is harboring an ulterior motive to go to the movies and not participate in that service project. But they do not want to say this openly, so to to save their prestigious they reply 'sounds good'. But in reality they know that they are not going to be there. In which case 'sounds good' is just one escape.

So 'sounds good' is not an innocuous expression and is not a mere phrase. Rather it is a collection of words that betray one's sincerity. And like all linguistic expressions, if one is not careful, the use of such a phrase is habit-forming. Wherein all day long one will say, 'sounds good, sounds good, sounds good...' But that is not at all how we wish to express ourselves in this world.

Actually the phrase “sounds good” stems from the idea that to the ear it seems fine but in actuality it is not proper. For instance, suppose a sweet-talking, hypocritical politician promises to help all the citizens. He pledges, "I will build schools and hospitals, and schooling and medical care will be free for all. Plus I will do this and that etc." So he is making so many grand proclamations that "sound good", but internally he has no plan to do any of those things. That is why the people say his talk "sounds good", yet side by side they know that his promises are just hot air. Nothing is going to happen. That is why the phrase "sounds good" is used for the aforesaid scenario.

Or if you have a flower bouquet made of paper that does not have any smell. You can say that it looks good. but you cannot say it is very good on the whole. Because it is not an actual flower, just it looks good.

One’s talk should be clear and conclusive

Our human personality is to be built on the firm foundation of tantra - the essence of which is straightforwardness, clarity, and precision, wiping away all duplicity and hypocrisy. And Baba wants that this very essence of tantra should be reflected in our very language as well.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Your language must not have any ambiguity. It should be free from all ambiguities. It should be clear, conclusive and decisive." (3)

So the phrase 'sounds good' has no place place in our Ananda Marga vocabulary, in our AM way of life. Because the whole spirit of the phrase is tainted in deceit. That is why Baba is adamantly against the use of such phrases and ways of thinking. With such a mindset, no good can be done in this world.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Those who seek to promote social welfare...will have to engage themselves in constructive activities in a straight-forward manner, instead of resorting to duplicity and deceitfulness." (4)

Now is the time for everyone in our Ananda Marga to once again remember Baba's teachings and hold firm to our spiritual tenets and be extra vigilant in Sixteen Points. That is the only way to ward off the onslaught of materialism.

By wandering around AN, Tiljala, and Jamalpur I wasted my time

"Notun eseche purátan geche, e notun mor cira nútan... (Prabhat Sagmiita #2175)

Purport:

The new has come and the old has gone. This new is my Ever-New - my Parama Purusa. He has graciously brought fulfillment in my life by His affection; He is with me day and night, all the time, always.

Those things which have an end eventually become old. Only the ever-new Parama Purusa has no end. He is eternal. His coming and going never happens - He is omnipresent. He remains new forever - always.

This ever-new Parama Purusa is within me, in my heart. Days passed in vain searching Him outside. By wandering around the far away “holy” places, “tiirthas” like Varanasi, Puri, Mecca, Rome, Jerusalem, Ananda Nagar, Tiljala, and Jamalpur I just wasted my time. I did not find Him there. Now, by His grace I have realised that He is in my heart - at all times...

Perpetual fight in this universe

Prout philosophy states, “Fight is the essence of life. Biologically, life is an expression of inner stamina, and externally or physically, it is a ceaseless fight to restore an unstable equilibrium. Anywhere and everywhere in the universe there is conflict. Why? If one looks at the process of creation, one will observe that creation originated from the nucleus. In the first phase of creation, that is, the phase of expansion, it is Avidyá or material force which supplied stamina to the Cosmic Mind, which is the cause of the process of creation. However, it cannot be denied that Vidyá or spiritual force is totally absent in this phase. In fact, in the struggle between Vidyá and Avidyá the former is suppressed by the latter and the resultant is expansion from the original nucleus. In the second phase, namely the phase of withdrawal, it is Vidyá which supplies the life juice for an interial move to the nucleus. Here also Avidyá is fighting a losing battle. In essence, in every sphere there is fight between Vidyá and Avidyá, and the resultant is interial or exterial progress. When Avidyá wins the process of crudification goes on; when Vidyá wins the process of introversion goes on.” (1)

How parents make their kids liars

Ananda philosophy states, “Today parents may rightly say, “We have almost no vital energy left after exchanging blows and counter-blows with life. We have no chance to mould the minds of our children with the care and tenderness of our hearts. All the sweetness and finer sensibilities of our minds have been sucked dry by the harsh realities of life. How can we take care of our children? We cannot even provide them with proper food and clothing. How can we know what they are thinking? Do we have the time to understand anything properly at all? We know children should be taught through the medium of play and entertainment, both at home and outside, but is it possible for us to do that? We even have to disturb our talented son at his studies to send him to the grocer’s to buy salt, cooking oil, spices, etc. We know it is wrong, but there is no alternative, for keeping a servant is beyond our means.”"

Ananda philosophy states, "There may be some truth in this, but it is not the point at issue here. In order to develop a healthy outlook, the most important thing children need is robust idealism. To impart this, parents require only two virtues: self-restraint and good judgement. Let us discuss good judgement first."

Ananda philosophy states, "When the parents are about to go on a trip or go to a show, or when they are invited to a pleasant function or a social outing, the children may start whining or nattering to accompany them. At such times many parents tell lies without a qualm; somehow they dupe their children and leave. When the children realize what has happened, they also learn to tell lies; and to hide their intentions or their actions from their parents, they gradually start lying more and more." (1)

Note: Without realising it, parents teach their children both good things and bad things. Being an ideal parent is not easy. Unknowingly parents often teach their children the ways of lies and deception.
