Filthy vocabulary?

Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to learn and follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

Our tantric code is based on a high ideal wherein even the language reflects an outlook based on spiritual realization and selfless sacrifice and service. Sadly, this ethic is wholly absent in materialistic communities. And that deficit is also reflected in those languages. Here following are a few of the many terms that are a product of a superficial materialistic way of thinking and / or a lustful male mind-set.

Violent words towards cat

(a) 'Kill two birds with one stone': This is one of numerous terms that reflect a superficial, uncaring, materialistic attitude that reflects the idea that this whole creation is just something for one’s own personal enjoyment and selfish indulgence. The phrase means getting two jobs done at the same time, but it is a heartless expression. Whatever pain or hardship others have to suffer - whether it be people, animals, or plants - all that is secondary to the self-indulgent pleasure derived by the materialist. In a similar way of thinking there is the phrase 'more than 1 way to skin a cat' - which is a heartless way of saying that there is more than one answer to every problem.

(b) 'Sell yourself - Sell it': In this era of gross materialism, it is not just goods and material items that are sold. One must also sell ideas or even yourself. No longer does one try to convince others to get their point across. Rather, one sells it. Whether the other party understands or not is irrelevant. So long as one can sell the idea that is enough. The buying and selling mentality of materialism has invaded even the depths of one's psyche.

Examples: how good actions also colored with bad terms

(c) 'Don’t put all your eggs in one basket': This refers to the concept of not limiting oneself to a single option in life. But why correlate this notion with the embryo or offspring of a chicken. Are chickens mere commodities with no existential value of their own. Have chicken eggs been created solely for human consumption - have humans become so ego-centric. Certainly there are better - more sentient - ways to express this concept.

(d) 'Rosehip': What is the need to give a name to an herb that links that herb with a particular body part. This is yet another sensual expression of modern-day materialism. Is the only way to make this herb appealing to relate it with the mid-section of human being? There is a never-ending fascination with the allurement of the physical body in modern, western / materialistic society.

(e) 'Overkill': The social meaning of this is doing a particular task to a degree far more than is needed such as cleaning a spotless floor 3 more times, or tying down a 3kg object with ropes that were designed to hold 1,000kg. But in materialistic societies, where violence is rampant and killing is popular theme in movies, the term overkill was invented, as if to say that you already killed something - it is dead and lifeless - so there is no need to kill it anymore than that. So do not overkill it.

And there are numerous more terms.

Lowly mind creates lowly words

In our male dominated western society, language has been formed to reflect many lower types of ideas. That is why phrases and terms like 'plug and socket' get switched over into 'male and female' etc. And while it is pervasive in the west, we cannot claim that all are affected. Rather, individual and communities around the globe are affected to the degree they have become victims of materialism and the resulting pseudo-culture values and expressions.

In that case, the dominant male culture dictates events according to male satisfaction, or sensual male desires. Where words and phrases are regularly used to objectify the female body and / or portray a tamasik, sensual way of thinking etc. Just like the term 'lady's finger' was made to represent the common Hindi word Bhindi, also known as the vegetable okra. Or this male-dominated society borrowed the sensual female related term 'bra' or 'brassiere' to depict the mundane cover that fits over the front of an automobile.

Ananda Marga is spiritual society - should avoid negative terms

In this way, unfortunately, the English language - and other languages - are littered with so many of these types of expressions and innuendos: Where normal everyday events get described and named according to the landscape of the female body.

Altogether all these words and phrases are the expression of a low mind. It is a degenerated way of thinking whereby the collective debased mind submerges in a negative thought pattern. And mostly the cause is current era of our male-dominated society.

Our Ananda Marga society is spiritually based and that sentient and effulgent quality should reflect in all our expressions of individual and collective life. And we should not let ourselves get caught up in nor affected by the use of such degrading terminology that has become so pervasive all around the globe.

Conclusion

In His historic discourse, 'Renaissance In All the Strata of Life', Baba directs us that we are to guide the society and bring a renaissance in all the spheres of existence from language and linguistic expression to politics to economics to culture to spirituality and more. So language is also one key factor that should be purified, refined and made more sentient. Here following is Baba's call for a renewal in all the realms.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The scope of the Renaissance movement is vast, and you will have to start your work from this very moment: It brooks no delay." (1)

Namaskar,
In Him,

~ In-depth study ~

Reason for shortage of spiritual words in English language

Here below Baba is guiding us that language develops according to need based on life experience. Linguistic expression develops according to day to day engagements.

For instance, those Inuit tribes in Alaska developed a language rich with words about snow but with a dearth of vocabulary for hot-weather activities; similarly those communities from the landlocked desert have a plethora of words about dry, desert living and suffer from a shortage of words about oceanography etc. In the same manner, those communities that grew out of the confines of materialism have a gross abundance of terms describing sensual life, and have an extreme dearth - or even no words at all - of terminology depicting spiritual life. If a people have no idea what savikalpa samadhi is then there is no cause for them to create such a word.

Words are created based on a community's sphere of engagement in a particular realm of life. That is what Baba is expressing in His below teaching.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Perhaps you know – especially those of you who study philology, or deal with the science of phonetics and vocabulary – that a language in its infancy starts with a very limited vocabulary. Later, the more the community using this limited word-stock advances in different spheres of practical life, the more enriched the vocabulary becomes, but if that community lacks the will to advance, their vocabulary will not grow..."
"I have just said that as a community passes through various phases in different spheres of life, its collection of words simultaneously increases. The language of monkeys will serve as an example. It is a fact that monkeys have their own language. Among the different species of monkeys there are those who remain in the jungles and forests. As they hardly ever come in contact with human beings, they have little knowledge and few words in their stock, perhaps thirty to forty words. They do not need to create compound words; they manage well enough by uttering certain significant expressions using sounds such as kiun, kun, kin, kain." (2)

Guidelines for how to create new words

However, in Ananda Marga we always bring everything into a positive light. Because Baba graciously gives solutions for each and every problem. So in the response to the current trend of debased language, Baba has given special encyclopedia(s) and grammar books - such as Laghu Nirukta and Shabda Cayanika etc - and included within them are guidelines for how to create new words. Thus He has granted us the opportunity to invent and formulate proper sentient words which were otherwise lacking in the language. So this is one special new technique given by Baba. And this will be very beneficial for society. Because just as the standard of mind affects the quality of language, similarly oral and linguistic expression in all its forms affects the development of mind.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Good company, good books, good literature, good songs, kiirtanas (devotional chanting) elevate the mind and the mind becomes sanctified." (3)

A linguistic comparison

Here are some basic & qualitative differences between oriental and occidental language. As this gives some insight as to how languages are formed.

Uniqueness of the sanskrit language

As Ananda Margiis, by Baba's grace we have gotten opportunity to bring the Sanskrit language into our everyday vocabulary. Because certainly this is a beautiful and subtle language-- with its own internal and unique meaning. As we have all seen there are numerous Sanskrit terms which have no direct corollary word in the western languages like English.

For example such important and deeply meaningful words like mantra, upavasa, dharma, and sadhana etc-- none of these words have an appropriate English synonym. No doubt certain words are used such as incantation, fasting, religion, and meditation etc. But these all fall short of the mark; they sacrifice to some or more degree the true meaning of the term. And Baba clearly points out that these English terms do not carry the real spirit of the corresponding Sanskrit words.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "There is no proper English word for the Sanskrit word 'mantra'. We use the word 'incantation' for mantra, but it is not a proper word for the Sanskrit term." (4)

And regarding the word upavasa Baba again points out the deficit of the corresponding word in English.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "'Upavasa' - on these days of fasting, what are all spiritual aspirants to do? Mentally they should live near their Lord...these days are known as 'upava'sa'. The word 'fasting' does not represent the proper sense or proper spirit." (5)

More examples how English is incapable

Likewise dharma is often translated as religion; yet as Ananda Margiis we all know the term 'religion' is entirely insufficient to represent the Sanskrit word 'dharma'. And even the word sadhana has no English counterpart. In common circles the English word meditation is used. But that is unable to express the proper meaning of the Sanskrit term sadhana.

And same is the case with the Sanskrit word Is't'a. In that case also the applied English term 'goal' does not carry the distinctive meaning of the term I'sta'. Rather a whole collection of words are needed to attempt to carry the spirit of the term Is't'a. But even by using a half-a-dozen English terms or more, still they  fail to reflect the real sense, spirit, and vibration of the term Is'ta.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "What's the meaning of Is't'a? Is't'a means 'loving', 'favourite', 'dear', 'attractive', 'goal', 'terminus', 'desideratum'. There are so many imports for that single term Is't'a." (6)

So we see that in so many cases the English vocabulary is basically incapable of reflecting spiritual ideas which are neatly expressed in a single Sanskrit term.

The idea is that language itself is a reflection of the mental standard of a given society. And when the Sanskrit language itself was developed during an era when the psychic standard was quite high, then there is a tremendous number of words for expressing subtle spiritual ideas. Whereas in English, that scope is not present; if anything, the English language is prone in the opposite direction, especially these days where it is marred by extreme materialism.

And indeed the above letter presents a few phrases and terms from the English language that reflect the prevailing materialistic outlook of the day. And verily there are countless more examples.

How avidya maya tries to ruin sadhakas

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The avidyá force declares war on those whose desire or inclination is towards vidyá; this gives rise to a hostile tendency in the recesses of their minds, against which they have to struggle. At home the husband, wife or the other members of the family become dissatisfied with them, and create various obstacles. In the field of their activities the opportunities arise for depravity, meanness, bribes etc., and they have to maintain their self-control. The locusts of desires come swarming in to destroy the very bud of their sádhaná. So they must carefully avoid such temptations for their own safety. But those whose movement is truly towards vidyá, who are determined to follow the path of vidyá by sacrificing their all, will eventually become immune to all obstacles. No amount of scornful taunts or diatribes will be able to check their lightning speed. They will emerge victorious, weathering and defying all storms, and eventually stand firm and erect like the Himalayas; and the storms and squalls will rebound back in disappointment."

"When the Sádhaka or the spiritual aspirant will stand untrammelled and resolute, with the courage of his conviction, and self-confidence, all snags and dangers will gradually wither away – will timidly disappear from his path...Obstacles are the concomitants of sádhaná, struggling is a good sign. By these obstacles sádhakas can understand that their spiritual practice is on the right track. Spiritual philosophy comes into being only when sádhakas struggling with avidyá’s hindrances, vindicates their move towards Brahma after defeating the base propensities of avidyá by their own intellect and judgment." Good News: AMPS + 3 more

Baba

Good News: AMPS
Namaskar,

Before 1990, under Baba's direct physical guidance, our AMPS was one shining light bringing welfare to all.
Then for a few months & years our organisation fell into a bit of a quagmire: The main problem being that everyone passively presumed that those at the helm will guide us straight to glory. Living under that false assumption - and just depending on those top posted workers - a thick stagnancy settled into our AMPS.
Now, however, as we look around, that stagnancy is quickly dissipating and our AMPS is moving through a period of great revitalisation. Here is the proof.

First off, everyone's awareness is on the rise and there is a stream of ideological consciousness amongst margiis and wts that was not present earlier. Currently there is active and ongoing talk about key ideological issues: margii rights, the need to follow Baba's teachings such as Sixteen Points and Caryacarya, authenticity of published discourses, and about so many other burning and vital issues.

This has all brought about a heightened understanding of Ananda Marga ideology - a new level of awareness.

Extraordinary development

Religions are essentially based on dogma where people are ordered to follow certain codes and rituals. Followers are indoctrinated into the tenet, “Don't use your brain.” That is the way religion works. Their followers blindly adhere to their edicts. Yet those same religious followers use their brains in other fields: Business, technology, science, schooling and colleges, competitions etc; but not in religion. Yet religion is full of dogma that chokes human progress and that is why it is very dangerous and deadly.

Ananda Marga is not a religion. Before '90 Baba was controlling everything. After all, Baba is Parama Purusa; so whatever He was directing and telling was perfect. And when margiis and wts followed those orders then the outcome was very good. But after 1990 AM shifted gears and adopted the mode of a religion. Whatever the priests, rabbis, mullahs, or popes of Ananda Marga told, then that was treated as the word of God. There was no need to consult Ananda Marga philosophy. Within a short period though, margiis started understanding they should not blindly follow their preachings. That is when the ideological renaissance started in Ananda Marga and there was more inquisitiveness about AM teachings. The strong desire to know what Baba told - what is right and wrong - came into the mind of sincere margiis and Wts. Since then tremendous progress began in Ananda Marga. This mode was not present earlier.

This change is not just an ordinary affair but an extraordinary development. It is by thinking and discussing about Ananda Marga ideology, and assimilating those ideas into our individual and collective consciousness, that the ideology ultimately gets implemented.

Hypocrisy of Publications was unmasked

Between 1990 and 1995, the “mullahs” of Ananda Marga were thinking that, “We are everything - what we do everyone must follow.” Those top Dadas did much harm. They were committing sins in the field of publications and trying to befool margiis with their conniving tactics as if nothing was wrong and that they were following Baba’s order. They went to extremes to prove that regardless of any discourse Baba wants that it should be written as original Bengali. That era was so underdeveloped and primitive that even the vast majority of margiis believed those falsehoods that were propagated by Publications etc were okay and perfect.

But after some time the hypocrisy of Publications was unmasked. So a lot of progress happened. In Ananda Marga, in the field of Publications, after the dogma that “everything should be translated from the original Bengali” was brought to light, a sea of change occurred. How far margiis speak openly these days or not, but 75% of the margiis know that Baba’s books are not proper and should come into form - accurate and true. The hypocrisy of Publications has been exposed. They have no room to run and hide. A big change has happened - a veritable revolution.

Those who were distorting Guru’s teachings are now scared to do so because margiis are alert. If anyone purposely alters Guru’s discourses then they are shamed. So those wrongdoers know they know they can no longer distort His guidelines and get away with it. Rather they will be caught and taken to task in full view of all margiis.

No longer blinded by the colour of the dress or by stature of the post

Like this in Ananda Marga, on many fronts, there have been a plethora of positive changes and those will be discussed in further emails etc. Some are here enlisted here. So many other false things like dogmatic tiirthas, so-called mahaprayan, and Fake Ananda Vaniis etc are disappearing in the light of Ananda Marga ideology. As ideological awareness rises, those dogmas wane and ultimately become extinct.
So this dual approach of a rise of ideological consciousness and the obliteration of dogma is the first  benefit.
The second dramatic change is that now in our AMPS people are understanding 'who is who'. In 1991, it was thought that those in the helm were divine and could do no wrong. With that misconception so much cheating, distortion, and exploitation was going on.

Now margiis and field workers are no longer blinded by the colour of the dress or by stature of the post etc. These relative factors hold no water on their own. Now everyone can see who is who through the lens of
Ananda Marga ideology.

That means those in Centre are being measured by their conduct, not their dress or post. And when group and factional interest is at a premium in the upper echelons of the organisation, margiis and general workers can understand the extent of the problem - and take steps to fix things.

Longer blind faith in group leaders

Now there is no longer an idle dependence on "a few high posted dadas". Instead, sadhakas are taking Baba's name and being led by His divine teachings. They no longer have blind faith in group leaders. And by this way the pathway to following Baba's divine ideology has been cleared. That is one great development. Now everyone realises that the way to evaluate anyone is by seeing their conduct - not by their post or dress.
Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Your ideal is represented by your conduct..." (1)

Any by that way - by understanding who is who and ensuring people follow the proper code of conduct, the ideology will get implemented.

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "Human beings cannot propagate a great ideology by their knowledge, intellect, or social status...they can only do it through their conduct." (2)

Thus from the innermost seed vessel in the mind to our outer expression, there has been a monumental shift and significant changes in our AMPS. Now people realise that this is the time to follow ideology and not get misled by dogma.

Baba says, "When clouds collect around the pole-star and cover it, your duty will be to remove the clouds and follow the pole-star without caring to see where the clouds have gone." (3)

And by Baba's grace that is happening - everyone in Ananda Marga is getting their vision fixed on the pole-star, on Baba.

A key element why Baba's teachings are getting properly protected and instilled within the consciousness of Ananda Marga is because of sincere interest by margiis and wts to safeguard His teachings. And certainly the best way to safeguard such teachings is to follow them in individual life and implement them in the society. And this great process is going on in our Ananda Marga.

Very positive development

Thus even though group clashes and infighting are still going on, behind the scene something much, much deeper is happening. Everyone is learning Ananda Marga ideals, by His grace. Sadhakas are now putting philosophical understanding into working knowledge. So, all in all, everything in our AMPS is moving in a remarkably positive direction and it is only a matter of time till all groupism and selfishness is gone from our Ananda Marga.

The main thing is that our Ananda Marga ideology has been saved; it is well protected; and there is a growing awareness about Guru's true teachings. By that way it is sure that everything will be okay both in our organisation and in the society at large. Because the presence of ideology creates a positive flow in the mind and a stir in the society.

In contrast, those selfish parties that hold power and seem strong - either in the organisation or in the general society - will be pulled apart and rooted out since they lack a universal outlook

Day by day things are moving ahead in a positive direction in our AMPS; so none should fall in the depths of frustration. Awareness is growing fast in our Ananda Marga and it will not be long till that positive development is reflected in all the facets of Ananda Marga life - including in a bright new leadership as well.
Now everyone realises that no group or subfaction is fit to rule. So many good people in our Marga are coming forward and one day they will dharmically lead our Marga. The era of groupism is fast coming to a close and new life is getting pumped into our Marga from the ground up. That will be reflected in our leadership as well. That day is soon to arrive.

Baba says, "Leadership is not imposed from above, rather it establishes itself through dedication, sincerity, ideological zeal, fighting spirit and all-round capacity. Leaders gradually acquire such capabilities -- step by step." (4)

The life of a warrior - constantly fight against evils

By Baba's grace we are building up that healthy AM society and will spread His divine teachings to all the four corners-- to every place in this universe.

Baba says, "Remember -- you have to serve humanity. You have to dedicate yourself to the cause of humanity as a whole. Your life is valuable; your time is all the more valuable. You should not waste a single moment. The task is glorious. The task is novel. Lead the life of a warrior and constantly fight against evils. You will be victorious. So march ahead!" (5)

We have to do many ideological teachings to propagate - until each and every person accepts Ananda Marga ideology our work is not finished.

“Remember, until every person in the universe accepts the Ananda Marga ideology, you have no opportunity to rest.” (6)

Optimism is our way

The great tide of ideology is coming forth in our Ananda Marga and with that rising tide the era of staticity is crumbling to dust. By His grace those who have assembled in His Marga and are upholding His divine teachings will spread the great ideology and bring welfare to every nook & corner of this universe. This is His guarantee. So our future is bright - assured.

Baba says, "Crisis is quite natural for something moving. Wherever there is movement, there is struggle...But you know, I am not a pessimist. I am always an optimist. And I want all my sons and daughters to be optimists. And I want them to struggle against this death signal of humanity, and come out successful."
"And I am sure that you boys and you girls must be optimists; and it is your duty to save humanity. And I hope you will be able to save humanity, because, just like me, you are also optimistic. You should know that great, or good, people are few in number, they are not many. They do not come within the scope of millions or billions. They are always few in number. And these few, they are the torchbearers of human society, they are the pioneers, they are the vanguards of human society. So it is your duty to save humanity. And those who are unable to shoulder their own bags and baggages -- their responsibilities are to be shouldered by you. You should remember that the life of a spiritual aspirant is a mission. One's entire life is a mission, one's entire existence is a mission. And your mission is -- what? To save humanity from this crisis. I hope you will be successful. And I not only hope, I am sure that you will be successful." (7)

Namaskar,
in Him,
Jyoti

~ In-depth study ~

Our AMPS was built to do great things in this world - in this universe; and by Baba's divine grace today our organisation is rapidly advancing along the path of progress.

By looking around and seeing the group-oriented conflicts etc, some may just think that our AMPS is riddled by chaos, factionalism, and lawlessness - and that there are no positive developments. However, upon closer examination and more careful assessment, we can easily see that our Marga is actually a budding flower - getting ready to bloom into greatness.

By these above discussed practical indicators and verifiable evidences, it has become apparent that our AMPS has made tremendous strides since 1990 - and that things are only getting better and better, day by day.

Due to alertness and awareness of margiis

Here is one more proof about the uniquely positive scene these days.

All are certainly aware that in the past when any Taraka Brahma took advent on this earth then those teachings could not be protected. Lord Shiva's and Lord Krsna’s teachings were mostly lost or forgotten and replaced by dogmas. Thus society could not get the full benefit of their auspicious advent. Because those divine guidelines could not be saved and propagated age after age. But this time around, Taraka Brahma Shrii Shriii Anandamurtijis’  teachings are mostly intact due to alertness and awareness of margiis and a lot of pracara work is going on about this.

Danger keeping NM bosom friend

Reply to: anandamargauniversal1@yogasamsthanam.net

Baba

Danger keeping NM bosom friend

Namaskar,

Often parents, out of concern, keep a strict vigil on the company their children keep. They feel that their children can get negatively affected by keeping a wrong company. While correct in thinking so parents often, quite ironically, tend to ignore the application of the same principle of staying away from the bad company on themselves. The common argument that is presented is that they are grown up adults and know very well what not to learn. They say that even in the company of a bad person they can refrain from picking bad habits and will learn only good habits. Let us take an example. Say Dr. A is a professor in a University and is concerned and teaches his son B that he should always stay in the company of good people. A, however, takes a walk with his colleague X who is an alcoholic. When A’s father tells him that A should not hang out with X then A says, “...but father, I am a professor and a grown-up man and I know what not to learn from X and what to.” Does A also need to follow the principle of satsaunga (good company) in his life as much as he wants B to?

There is a great emphasis on Satsaunga (good company) in Ananda Marga teachings. Although the effect of sanga (company) is more pronounced during the childhood it is applicable for all ages.

Village simpleton becomes fashionista in the city

To see how sanga affects a person, consider the case of a simple villager who has, in the name of belongings, just a pair of loincloths and a bicycle and he is happy with those items. When he comes to a city and sees other people in branded clothing and shoes he develops a desire to acquire the same. While in the village he did not have a need for any items of clothing beyond his loincloth but the company of city-people created a need for fashionable clothing. Likewise, he was happy with his bicycle in his village but when he sees the large cars of city-people that very bicycle begin appearing outdated. This is the effect of sanga or company. Thus, due to the company, the village person begin behaving like a city person.

Psychic influence of sanga

Influence of company takes place at both physical and psychic level. The viral influence of Hollywood fashion is an example of how sanga works at the psychic level. Although, those people who do not go to Hollywood physically if their mind’s Abhoga (mental food) is Hollywood then they get affected by the trends in the Hollywood.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “The cruder the vibrator we get, the cruder the Prakrti tries to make it. Actually Prakrti tries to make that her own but this makes the object still cruder. So gradually it becomes crude from the subtle. Behind this a principle works – “Abhoga Samsargat Praptiresana”. You must remember it. When near an object of enjoyment (Abhoga) another object reaches, a desire is begotten to get that object. For instance a man when in town has dress, living as per the dress and living of the urban people and when in a village he has as per the villagers. This is effected because of his desire begotten out of his association with people in town and villages respectively. When some persons take tea, there you also get the desire to take the same.” (1)

Even animals and humans affect each other via company/sanga

Chimpanzees that stay with human scientists have an improved vocabulary compared to the ones that live in the wilderness due to human company. Those cows that have never seen the city and have been on farms all their lives get stressed when they first time see the roads and blaring vehicles. While the stray cows in cities easily maneuver through the roads. One can see such cows roaming freely on roads in India. They can do so because of human sanga.

Humans also get affected by animals’ company. If a person has a pet dog and that person is not having Brahma bha’va towards the dog, i.e. the person does not consider the dog as a manifestation of Brahma but an ordinary dog then the person will definitely get affected by the dog’s company. If the person spends long hours with the dog then his behavior will get affected by the dog’s behavior.

Thus, a mind gets colored by another mind in whose company/sanga it comes as long as the mind is not ensconced in Brahma. This is a natural law. What to speak of one human affecting other even animals affect humans.

Why always keep satsaunga (good company)

As far as possible one should only keep good company or satsaunga regardless of one’s physical age. If we allow our minds to be in the company of bad people then undoubtedly our minds will get affected by the bad habits of the people in whose contact we come. It may not be possible to keep 24/7 company of maha’purus’as as they may not be available in abundance. One should attempt to maximize satsaunga (good company) however.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “Humans should always be careful about the company they keep. What is the result of keeping good company? By spending time with good persons, a deep impression is imprinted on the mind, causing the desire to be good to rise in the mind. If, on the other hand, one chooses to associate with a drunkard, a thought will eventually come in the mind, “What is the harm if I drink a little wine?” And if one associates with thieves, one will think, “What is the harm if I steal something?” To give an example, suppose a person is standing beside a tea stall. There the smell of the tea wafts to the person’s nose. The person will then say, “Give me a cup, too.” In this incident, the smell of the tea affects the mind. If that person had not remained near the tea stall, the smell would not have reached the nose and perhaps that person would not have taken tea for two or three days. This is the influence that association has on the mind.” (2)

Dealing with bad people

If all spend time with only good people the who will spend time with bad people and correct them? Who will reform bad people? Here the operating factor is the relative nature of one’s goodness. If one is a sa’dhu’ then one can come in contact with the bad people and without himself getting affected can provide satsaunga (good company) to the bad people and rectify them. However, for someone who is not a sa’dhu’ there is a risk that that person will get affected by the presence of bad people.

Ananda Marga ideology says, “What is durjana? Durjana means “he who depraves the mind of others”. Now here durjana is a relative term. A man, Mr. X, may be treated as durjana for Mr. Y, but may not be treated as durjana for Mr. Z. Suppose in Mr. X the good portion, the merit portion, is ten degrees, and the bad portion, the demerit portion, is twelve degrees. Then the resultant is two degrees in favour of demerit: ten degrees merit and twelve degrees demerit, so the resultant goes in favour of demerit. Two degrees demerit is the resultant. Now another man’s merit portion is fifteen degrees, and demerit portion ten degrees. So the resultant five degrees goes in favour of merit. So he has five degrees of merit, and the first man has two degrees of demerit. So when that five-degree merit man comes in contact with that two-degree demerit man, the resultant will go in favour of that five-degree merit man. So that bad man will be modified, rectified. He will become good on coming in contact with that five-degree merit man. So for that five-degree merit man, that two-degree demerit man is not a durjana, because the latter cannot deprave him. But for a man who has just one degree of merit, that two-degree demerit man may deprave him – so for him that two-degree demerit man is a durjana.” (3)

Spending time with durjana - Seva’ for sa’dhu’ and satsaunga (good company) for durjana

If a sa’dhu’ spends time with a durjana to rectify him then the sa’dhu’ is performing a seva’ and the durjana is receiving satsaunga. This way, there is no downfall of sa’dhu’ while the durjana is elevating. On the other hand, a common person whose merit is comparable with the durjana then that durjana will be a kusanga for the common person. This kind of association has only one result and that is the downfall of the common person.

Conclusion

Often, grownup people think that they will not get affected by the bad habits of the people who they come in contact with. Although, the influence of company is more pronounced in one’s childhood the influence is still there, and quite significant, in one’s adulthood. In fact, what to speak of humans affecting each other even animals affect and get affected by humans via the company. One should always attempt to have good company. The only time one should get in contact with bad people is when they need to be rectified.

That is why we see that in various discourses Baba stresses that committed sadhakas should always be busy in shravan, manan, and nididhyásana. That way they will busy engaged in and get the company of Sadguru. Sadguru is not just an imaginary, utopian, or some far-fetched Entity. He is hiding in the heart, and one’s only duty is to pay attention to Him by the aforesaid spiritual efforts. By the company of Sadguru, life will be full of bliss. And whatever work one does will be successful. Such sadhakas are an asset to the society. By their presence itself society at-large is greatly benefited. Those bhaktas get direct energy from Taraka Brahma. An ordinary sadhaka with a little effort can realise this. The central idea is that by various ways one should try to gain the company of Sadguru Baba. That is the best company.

In Him,
Bhakti

Gets degenerated in an evil environment

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “While moving along mundane mental paths, the human mind is influenced by many kinds of susceptibilities which are based on mundane activities. Under these circumstances there is a need, on the one hand, for purity of thought, and on the other, for satsauṋga [associating with good people]. The same person who is elevated in the company of good people, gets degenerated in an evil environment. This is a tested truth. So in human life there is as much need of satsauṋga as there is the need to shun evil company. Therefore, it is necessary to look for satsauṋga and avoid asatsauṋga [associating with bad people].” (4)

Even a saintly person will go astray after a few days

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Those who are born with fairly healthy bodies and minds, who do not lack knowledge of morality or live an undisciplined social life, or who have not become dishonest as a result of circumstantial pressure, often unwittingly take to the path of dishonesty because they keep bad company. Perhaps as many as ninety-nine per cent of people talk about themselves in the following way: “I do not need to bother about the company I keep, as long as I am good myself. I can remain good in all types of company. I am old enough to understand the difference between good and bad.” In other words, such people do not like to think, or rather feel piqued at the thought, that somebody should try to dissuade them from keeping bad company. Especially if a less-educated person advises a more highly-educated person to avoid bad company, that person will do it all the more. In society people who regard themselves as superior in status, wealth or education generally believe that it is entirely unwarranted for others to give them advice. That is why an educated but wayward son often disregards the good advice of his parents." (5)

"The natural characteristics of the human mind, however, tell a different story than what that ninety-nine percent think. A person of any age between seven and seventy is invariably influenced by the company he or she keeps. In other words, where goodness is predominant, bad people will slowly but surely become good, and where the opposite is the case, good people will become bad. Even a saintly person will go astray after a few days of close association with bad people." (5)

By keeping bad company people become debauched, slanderers & thieves

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Suppose a teetotaller mixes regularly with a group of alcoholics. The frequent anti-teetotaller gibes and the positive portrayals of the wondrous virtues of wine by the alcoholics will one day tempt the teetotaller to taste a little wine. His or her drinking friends will say, “We don’t want you to become drunk. But what’s the harm if you just taste a little! This surely won’t make you a bad person! What a moralist you are! Oh friend, to be such a moralist in the world today is ridiculous!” So one day the teetotaller tastes wine and this becomes the cause of his or her downfall. But on the day the unsuspecting teetotaller took wine, he or she did not realize that from that very day wine would become the cause of his or her degeneration." (5)

Children will also tend to become depraved if

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Similarly, by keeping bad company people become debauched, slanderers and thieves. Men or women who have to do little or no household work, who fail to cultivate high ideals in life, who are unable to evolve a spiritual outlook, or who do not have to work hard for a living, generally develop an extremely critical nature. By constantly associating with such people, those who possess high ideals or a diligent nature will gradually begin to spend their leisure time in slanderous gossip. If the parents or older members of a family are quarrelsome, the children will also become quarrelsome due to constant association. Similarly, if the women of a family have a highly critical nature, the children will invariably become critical because they will learn how to criticize from their elders. Children will also tend to become depraved if they associate too closely with older children in schools or colleges. When they stay among children their own age, however, they generally play in an innocent, joyous way. Childhood companions should be selected with great care, but young children are incapable of doing this. The base propensities which lie dormant in everyone are easily stimulated by constant association with bad people. Through the united efforts of parents, people living in the locality and educators, it may be possible to save children from bad company.” (5)

How to recognize weak personality

Baba

How to recognize weak personality

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Imagine a scoundrel is standing in front of you. The man is such a rogue that you feel like slapping him, but do not actually do it. It is only when you decide, ‘Let me slap that scoundrel’, that your hands actually strike him. When the inner urge to externalise the feeling becomes strong enough, your hands leap into action. A great person is one who has complete control over the externalisation of thoughts. A thought will not always be expressed physically. One may have a desire to hit someone or a desire to steal, but never actually does it due to one’s self control.” (1)

Knee-jerk reaction is the sign of a weak mind

Various people react differently to the same set of circumstances. For example, if one person in the market suddenly abused Mr. A and Mr. B.  Then Mr. A and Mr B will react differently. By listening to the unjust abuse, Mr A violently kicked the boy in his stomach. In contrast, when the same person abused Mr. B then Mr. B remained calm and patient to see how the situation developed.

According to the above teaching, Mr A has a weak mind because of his hasty, knee-jerk reaction. Whereas Mr B has a stronger mind as he exercised restraint over his motor organs. The final teaching is, “Do not react immediately - try to have control over your organs and do not allow your hands, feet, mouth etc (i.e. the motor organs) to quickly and impulsively jump into action.” To achieve this, mental force is needed. Otherwise, those organs will react automatically, without the support of the intellect.

Mr. A's leg kicked impulsively & killed the boy

In the above example, Mr. A dealt the boy a deadly kick in the stomach due to which he died. In result, Mr. A was arrested and convicted in court on charges of capital punishment. So this is the example of a thoughtless action. And according to the above Baba's teaching, Mr. A has no control over his nerve fibers - because of his weak mind. The weak mind cannot control the nerve fibers, and in result Mr. A's leg came impulsively into action without the conscious support of the mind. And he killed the boy. Later on, throughout his whole life, Mr. A repented for the crime he committed. The root cause is not thinking seriously, and just reacting senselessly in the spur of the moment. Many, who do not practice yoga and meditation, do not have control over their mind. Their mind is weak, and at the simplest of issues their emotions burst out - due to anger or hatred - and their motor organs also jump into action without the control of the mind.

For example, there was a crowd on the bridge, due to a pilgrimage. And someone started a false rumour that a wild elephant is approaching on the run. So without thinking, hundreds of people jumped into the river and the majority of them died. This is a classic example of a knee-jerk reaction. Their action was not supported by the mind. This proves that those who jumped into the river are all weak-minded.

Conclusion

Why does this happen - what is the operative factor? Due to lack of sadhana, the mind is very weak. So watch out. If someone’s mind is weak, then at the simplest of issues their emotions may burst out due to anger or hatred etc. And their motor organs might also jump into action without the control of the mind.  And that's what Baba is guiding us in His teaching.

In Him,
Svarnadiipti

Important thing to know

Suppose you saw a beggar sitting in a very cold winter night on the roadside in the darkness. Moving along you saw him, and by seeing his pitiful condition, from your eyes tears of compassion came. And with kindness, you arranged for his food and covering, and also provided shelter. So the tears of kindness which were spontaneous after seeing this beggar were not the sign of a weak mind. Rather, that was the sign of a developed mind which has very positive instincts. The conclusion is that those who express their knee-jerk reaction under the spell of malevolent vrttis; they are weak-minded. And the opposite is the case with benevolent vrttis. If seeing someone in trouble, you jumped into action to save them, then that is a positive thing.

Who is Radha

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Parama Puruśa is the only real entity, the only absolute entity. The further the jiivas move towards Parama Puruśa, the more elevated their minds become. When they reach a very subtle stage of elevation, their concentrated mind-stuff speeds towards Him with the one-pointedness of an arrow. Such a mentality is called Rádhá....What is Rádhá bháva? When devotees feel in their heart of hearts that their existence is meaningless without attaining Lord, that they cannot survive a single moment without feeling His blissful presence, they have attained the stage called Rádhá. Such devotees know nothing other than árádhaná [total mental absorption” (1)

Note: Some ignorant people think that Radha is a female of Vrindaban. But that is not true. 'A-grade' bhaktas are Radha, whether they are male or female or anyone.

Futility of marriage oath?

Baba

Futility of marriage oath?

Namaskar,

The marriage oaths given in Ananda Marga are meant only for Ananda Margiis. If one is not an initiated Ananda Margii and one does not have inherent reverence for Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, then those oaths / vows become meaningless.

If oath taker does not believe in Marga Gurudeva

In marriage, Baba has given the mantra and meaning, and the meaning is treated as an oath. The mantra begins with the following vow, which first the groom and then the bride must repeat.

"I say on oath in the name of Parama Brahma and Marga Gurudeva that out of my own free will I will accept Shriimatii / Ms. ... as my wife." (1)

In this above quote, the oath is taken "In the name of Parama Brahma and Marga Gurudeva". So here the point is that if the oath taker does not believe in Marga Gurudeva, then taking an oath in His name has no meaning for that person.

To take an oath in someone's name, one must have adoration for that person or entity. And the only person who has adoration for Marga Gurudeva Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is an initiated Ananda Margii who is practicing sadhana. Without that one will not have a devotional connection with Him. And without that inner feeling, that oath or marriage vow is impotent.

Just like a margii taking vow in the name of
Allah, Jesus, monkey Hanuman etc

So if one margii takes oath in the name of Marga Gurudeva, then that has deep meaning. Because the margii has reverence for Baba, our Marga Guru. But if that same margii takes oath in the name of Allah, Jesus or Hanuman, then what will be the sense of that when the margii has no feeling for them.

Similarly, if a non-margii brother or sister takes the oath on the name of Marga Gurudeva, then what meaning will that have when they themselves do not feel that Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is their Guru. If they had the feeling that Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is their Guru then certainly they would have taken initiation. So the fact that they have not taken initiation shows they do not have that type of feeling for Guru. Without that, it is just hypocritical to take an oath in Marga Guru's name. Officially on paper the oath can be done, but in the real sense no oath has been taken. And when the oath has not been taken then the marriage is null and void.

That is why we say the marriage oaths in our Ananda Marga marriage ceremony are only for Ananda Margiis. These oaths are meaningless for non-margiis.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Shubhamayii
