Evolution of bhakti + 4 more

Baba
Evolution of bhakti

Namaskar,

What is the real meaning of bhakti? Many sadhakas have pondered this question, and that is what we explore here as we delve into Sadguru Baba's teachings.

What is bhakti?

Baba says the root meaning of bhakti is “sa’ para’nurakti ishware”. That para’nurakti on Ishvara is called bhakti. Even many animals have sa’ma’nya’ bhakti. For example, some more developed animals are awed by looking at the mountains. They stop, look at the mountains and develop a feeling of surrender that they are in the presence of something greater than themselves. They bow and offer respect. When animals are even further developed, then this feeling of surrender becomes even more clear.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

If we take the example of domestic animals, they obey their masters. The reason is that they feel limited in front of their masters, and therefore follow the commands and orders, be it a horse, dog, cat, elephant, monkey etc. Domestic animals see that their masters are greater than them; that is why they follow those commands. A dog barks, runs, and does other things by the command of the master because the dog has a feeling of respect towards the master. If the situation arises, the dog will rescue the master. The dog does not know anything about the existence of Parama’tma’. But it knows this much that the master is greater than himself, and therefore develops respect and follows the commands and orders. If the dog knew of the existence of Parama’tma’ then it would have given top respect to Parama’tma’. So in this case, as the dog does not know of Parama’tma’, we will say that the dog’s bhakti is misplaced.

Child-mother analogy

Another example is that of a young child. For a child, their mother is everything, Hence, the child only knows the mother and loves her so much. Being a child, s/he does not know Parama’tma’. Had s/he known Parama’tma’, s/he would have had far more love for Parama’tma’ compared to the love that s/he now has for the mother. For a child, their mother is everything. When in a market, and the child cannot find its mother, then the child feels helpless and cries, as the shelter under which the child was living is no longer there.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Animals and human beings -- all have bhakti; the meaning behind this is that when one sees that something is greater than oneself, then they develop respect towards that entity. This feeling of respect, commitment and devoutness is referred to as sa’ma’nya’ bhakti. When this feeling becomes subtler then it is directed towards Parama’tma’. When such feeling towards Parama’tma’ arises, then the bhakta feels that Parama’tma’ is the nearest and dearest entity to him / her. As a result, the bhakta engages time in studying spiritual scriptures, in satsaunga, doing kirtan, meditation etc. In this way s/he engages in various activities by which s/he will come closer to Parama’tma’.

Confession of criminal

Whenever the bhakta is undergoing any physical hardship, then s/he will request Parama’tma’ for help, knowing that Parama’tma’ is the nearest and dearest Entity and Parama’tma’ knows everything. Even when the bhakta has made some mistakes, then s/he will try not to disclose his mistakes to others, but will ask Parama’tma’ for forgiveness and support, knowing that Parama’tma’ is omniscient. There is a feeling in the mind of the bhakta that Parama’tma’ is his/her well-wisher. Even a person with bad conduct knows that Parama’tma’ is omniscient and shares his/her feelings when in trouble. A criminal does not share such types of feelings even with friends and family members but shares with Parama’tma’. The atma situated in every human being knows what s/he has done, and is aware of the reality, even though s/he hides the wrongdoings from others, be they a court judge, friends, family etc. Within oneself satya only remains because the atma knows what is the truth. So when all the person’s capacities are utilized yet one still sees difficulties are surmounting, then one starts to ask Parama’tma’ for help.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Similarly, animals who live in a group generally follow their leader. Such animals are more clever than those who do not remain in a group. Wild animals have regard towards their animal leaders. Domestic animals have samanya bhakti for their master. Humans have bhakti towards Paramatman. Some people do rituals, others follow religions, and others have distinct ways of requesting Parama’tma’. Atheists do feel that something is greater than themselves, and they have respect for that. That is why Baba says that no one is an atheist. Everyone has bhakti.

When bhakti is pointed

When bhakti is more refined, it is for Parama’tma’ and only for Parama’tma’. In that stage, the bhakta feels the whole creation has originated from Parama’tma’ and s/he serves the creation out of love for that Creator, that Parama’tma’ whom they love.

Bhaktirbhagavato sevá bhakti prema svarúpińii;
Bhaktiránanda rúpá ca bhakti bhaktasya jiivanam.

In the highest stage of bhakti, the feeling develops that everyone is the progeny of Parama’tma’ and needs to be served. S/he will feel that everyone and everything in this creation is her/his own, and will feel love towards them. Then the life of the bhakta will be completely filled with love because in every step s/he will feel that Parama’tma’ is there to help and rescue them so there is no reason to fear. But one who feels that they themselves are the doer then their life will not be filled with bliss because the doer is limited.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Bhakti vs a’sakti

Bhakti is the longing which one has for Parama Purusa. Sometimes it is misdirected, and in other cases it is directed properly. For example, one who has love for money will feel disturbed when they lose their money, and sometimes they will even die from the shock of that loss, depending on the degree of their attachment to money. In this case, their love is misdirected, and so it is called a’sakti. But when affection and bhakti is pointed in the correct direction, then there is love for Parama’tma’, and the feeling extends to the creation of Parama’tma’ whom the bhakta serves and loves. That life is then filled with love only.

Slowly, bhakti becomes correctly directed to the One who is the Creator, and by this, bhakti is directed towards Parama’tma’. First the bhakta reads from scriptures, sings bhajans, kiirtans, and does meditation. Slowly, the feeling develops from the heart that Parama’tma’ is everything and there is nothing to fear. It doesn't matter how difficult the situation is, the bhakta feels that Parama’tma’ is there to take care of him/her and s/he never feels helpless. Rather life is filled with bliss because bhakti is properly directed.

Longing for parabhakti

“Cakrera paridhite ámi, tumi cakrer kendra sthita...” (Prabhat Samgiita #0713)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, You are the nucleus of this brahmacakra, cycle of creation. You are the Controller, and I am on the periphery. You are cosmic; I am unit. With sadhana and bhakti, and by reducing the radius, I will reach to You one day, by Your grace. Now I am an ordinary living being undergoing mundane pleasure and pain, happiness and sorrow, laughter and tears. But You are beyond all these ups and downs. You are eternally in bliss.

In my life, there is a feeling of love and sometimes melancholic longing for You. On some occasions I cry, and other times I laugh. When I receive anything I become happy, and when I lose then I shed tears of sadness. But Your seat is above all these comings and goings. Incidents do not affect You. You remain unassailed by any sort of happenings. You are nitya, eternal.

Baba, I am an ordinary human being. The things which I have, I always fear I will lose. That which I do not have, I harbour a strong desire to get. By Your krpa, I have the longing to have parabhakti. Sometimes my mind runs towards materialism, and other times it goes to the spiritual realm, divine world. In this way, my mental deer is bifurcated in its flow. Sometimes it aspires towards crude objects and sensual satisfaction, and other times it rushes headlong towards the Supreme Entity. But You are always in nitya bhava. You are bliss personified - established in anandam.

Baba, You are everything in this great universe. I salute You in full prostration….

Continued practice in sadhana needed

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Most people are well acquainted with the fourth state of mind (eka'gra). In this state the human mind sometimes becomes exalted with divine sweetness; and sometimes becomes as debased as an infernal creature. Sometimes it keeps company with good people and takes a resolve never to tell lies, accept bribes, get intoxicated, or become characterless; and sometimes it thinks that honesty and virtue are sheer folly, for happiness lies in falsehood, taking bribes, stealing, promiscuity, and the like. The mind is continuously tossed between good and bad. But when the practice of sa'dhana' inspires one to accept shreya (path of benevolence) as one’s ideology, one attains the true state of eka'gra bhu'mi. In this state waves upon waves of citta emerge."

Sha'ntaditao tulyapratyayao cittasyaeka'girata'parin'a'ma

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Every newcomer to the path of sa'dhana' suffers from a lack of concentration of mind. After repeating the is't'a mantra a couple of times hundreds of undesirable thoughts flood the mind. The newcomer thinks, “I am unable to attain the One on whom I meditate, and instead am pestered by those objects I do not want.” The hand counts the beads, the lips mutter the name of the is't'a, but the mind roams in the filth of hell. When all the undesirable waves are removed from the mind, one blissful wave begins to flow, and the sa'dhaka attains the state of eka'gra bhu'mi." (1)

Note: If in sadhana a person is not one-pointed (eka'gra means "one-pointed") it means they are not repeating their mantra in a proper manner. It means they are lacking sincerity and regularity of practice.

Source of our suffering + 4 more

Baba
Source of our suffering

Namaskar,

So many things happen in life - good times and bad ones, smart choices and foolish ones. Not most, but some of these events are related with our samskaras, i.e. yoga's theory of cause and effect, also known as action / reaction, or samskara theory. This letter investigates key aspects of samskara theory.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Only humans create new samskaras

While most have studied the facts about samskaras, let's take a moment to review some fundamental rules. Only human beings can create new samskaras. Because only humans have free will; animals do not. For example, someone might decide to harm or kill others, while another may choose to help a person in distress. Each human being has the freedom to make conscious decisions and take action. By exercising their free will and making life choices, people create new samskaras, or unexpressed reactions.

More precisely, a person creates new samskaras based on how much pain or happiness their actions bring unto others. For instance, if you feed a beggar and bring 50 points of happiness in the mind of that beggar, then you will incur a good samskara of 50 points, plus interest accrued over time. That is the quantum of pleasure you will experience in the mind due to your past action of feeding the beggar. In contrast, if you take a stick and intentionally hit someone and give that person 70 points of pain and suffering in the mind, then you will incur a bad samskara of 70 points plus interest. That is the quantum of pain you will experience in the mind due to your past action of hitting that person with a stick. (Note: Please see link appended below about paying interest in samskara theory.)

By their free will and ensuing actions people create new samskaras. And then at a conducive moment they undergo the reaction. As explained in the above examples, a person must experience that degree of pain or happiness in the mind that they caused in others, plus interest. This happens because humans have free will to act and either help or hurt others.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Animals: no free will & never create samskaras

In contrast, animals cannot create any (new) samskaras because they do not have free will. Everything they do is according to instinct, which is controlled by the Cosmic Mind. If a monkey bites you, then that monkey will not incur any samskara. Because that monkey was doing according to its innate instinct. There was no conscious decision by the monkey to bite or harm you. To use the analogy of a computer, those animals act according to the way they are pre-programmed to behave, just as a computer performs according to the way it was programmed. Ultimately, since animals do not have free will, they never create or incur any samskaras.

A despotic ruler who inflicts untold suffering and terrible pain upon others will most assuredly incur very negative samskaras and be reborn as a lower being or even as a piece of iron. The exact depth of their plunge depends upon the nature of their sins and how much pain they inflicted upon others etc.

Part-life

We should always remember that ours is a part-life. We have been coming and going onto this earth (and beyond), from one life to the next, since long. Whether we are a small child, an adult, or an elderly person, we are carrying around a big bundle of samskaras from past lives. And that can take shape in so many ways and explain why even a very good person may undergo a terrible problem in life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

For example, suppose a person is leading a very pious and saintly life; they never harm or hurt anyone. Yet they are facing one difficulty after another and experiencing so much mental anguish. In that case, we can surmise that this saintly person is undergoing the reactions from their past actions in a prior life. In a prior life, that person may have caused suffering to others and harmed them, and then carried those bad samskaras into this life. So even though this time around they are leading a saintly existence, this is just a part life. The suffering they are undergoing today may be the result of a very bad samskara from 2, or even 5 or 10 lives ago. So humans have the freedom to act and this is a part-life, linked with a whole chain of past lives and hence old samskaras.

Conclusion

In one's first human life they create new samskaras and reap the reactions in that very life itself - but still many unrequited samskaras remain which they shall reap in the future. In a short period, one can create enough samskaras to last for thousands of years. There is no set time frame for when a samskara will take expression, nor is there an easy escape from those unexpressed reactions; they have to take form. In addition, those samskaras are far more than one can ever undergo in this life; and, in this life also, they will create even more new samskaras. So it is a very dramatic situation whereby people incur huge numbers of samskaras.

The cycle is unending: birth to death and then rebirth. So one is not free. When a person is blessed to enter the path of sadhana, in the fire of sadhana every day one burns their samskaras. By doing sadhana and with His divine grace, one achieves liberation.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Namaskar,
In Him,
Amritadhara’

Within the animal category, there are two central groups:
(1) Those animals who were in human form but reverted back to animal life to undergo suffering from their past misdeeds.
(2) Those animals moving forward through the process of praisaincara and in order to progress that animal has to undergo clash and cohesion to reach the next higher state of mind. That is how srsti works. Those animals have to face hardship and struggle in the wilds in order to progress to the next higher life.

From the time one first emerges from the Supreme Hub in the form of fire or water, or wood etc up until one's highest expression of animal life, one will not have any samskaras because they do not have free will. It is only during one's first human life that new samskaras get created based on what one does - i.e. how one exercises their free will.

~ In-depth study ~

The child is suffering - no fault of its own?

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "It is quite often observed that a child suffers from some disease without any apparent fault on her part. The disease is attributed to her being affected by the germs of that disease, and thus the germs appear to be the cause. In fact, the saḿskáras of that child give rise to the saḿvedana or psychic action which then activates the germs of that particular disease in the body. The múla kárańa or root cause for the suffering of the child is saḿskáras, due to which saḿvedana arises and ultimately brings about the disease. It is therefore wrong to think that the child is suffering without any reason and for no fault of its own." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "So just as nimiita and upádána kárańa appears to be the main cause, the immediate reaction of an action appears to be the result while it is only a physical reaction, and the actual result or phala will be experienced later on. Karma and karmaphala travel in a wave and at one stage one becomes the kárańa for the other. This wave is unending, until karma ceases absolutely, karma and karmaphala are the kárańa or causes for each other, which travel in a never ending waves, until the karma and along with it, the formation of saḿskáras finally ceases." (2)

Consequences of his previous action of theft

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Suppose one has a desire to go to Calcutta and then actually goes there. This is an original action because to go or not to go to Calcutta depends entirely on one’s will. But an action which one is obliged to perform mechanically under pressure of circumstances is called saḿskáraḿulaka karma (reaction to the original action). In these actions it is the indirect will and not the direct will which functions. The original deed which was performed by the direct will is later expressed as a reaction by the indirect will. Your indirect will forces you to become a tool to restore the equilibrium in the universe which was lost due to your original action." (3)

Ananda Marga ideology says, "In sámskáraḿulaka karma individuals have no free will, but are slaves to the dictates of the indirect will. Suppose a person commits a theft by his free will. As long as the reaction of the original action of theft is unexpressed, his indirect will remains in seed form as reactive momenta. But the moment the indirect will finds a congenial environment it expresses itself, resulting in the thief either being arrested by the police, or having to undergo some punishment or humiliation. This is how the thief reaps the consequences of his previous action of theft." (4)

If they were wicked

Ananda Marga ideology teaches us, "Good reactions to good actions are experienced in a similar way. One will have to reap the consequences of one’s past actions until one’s saḿskáras are exhausted. If one’s previous deeds were virtuous, life will be blessed, but if they were wicked, one will be branded as a sinner. Only when all good and bad reactions have been expressed do the bondages of vice and virtue snap open." (5)

Suppose one harms someone

Ananda Marga ideology states, "All actions, whether introversial or extroversial, crude or subtle certainly lie latent in individuals in seed form as potential reactions. One day, with the help of the indirect will, they will be expressed in the external world. Suppose one harms someone. The reaction of one’s action will lie in potential form until the proper time and place arrives for its expression." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Even if one does not harm anyone physically, but simply thinks of harming someone, saḿskáras will still be created. Whatever feelings one may have for a person, good or bad, will certainly cause a reaction. That reaction will remain in potential form in the subtle mental sphere until the opportune time arrives for its expression. This is why wise people look upon this universe with an attitude of equanimity and pray for the welfare of all. Sarvesám mauṋgalam káunkśe. People who fail to do this will have to suffer endlessly for their mean-mindedness." (7)

Why sadhakas suffer

Ananda Marga ideology states, "We often notice that after initiation a sincere sádhaka suddenly experiences tremendous pain or pleasure. The initial stage of a spiritual aspirant’s life is quite troublesome. Those who suddenly feel tremendous happiness become so absorbed in this blissful state that they completely forget their ideology, and those who suffer immense torture sometimes leave the path of sádhaká due to their inability to face such difficulties. A true sadhaka must remain unaffected by both pain and pleasure. It should be understood that only through pain and pleasure can one’s sámskáras be destroyed and a new karmáshaya dominated by Consciousness be created." (8)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In this stage, when the karmáshaya is filled with Consciousness, the possibility of a spiritual aspirant’s rebirth is destroyed for good. Burnt seeds never sprout. However, even though it is burnt, the seed still exists." (9)

What is interest in samsakra theory

The below letter explains how one pays interest by incurring samskaras.

Lose all boundaries of limitation

“Bháve bhará ákáshe, bhávátiita sakáshe, maner mádhuri d́hele jái…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0573)

Purport:

O Bhávátiita Entity, due to your presence, my mental sky is filled with your ideation. I go on pouring the sweetness of my mind unto You. In the chords of my mental viina and in the music of my heart, besides You there is nothing else. Parama Puruśa, I love only You.

My Eternal Companion, please be gracious and lead me, day and night, unto Your radiant-filled, divine refulgence. You are the abundant beauty of the infinite; You float in the pollen of the finite as Taraka Brahma. Please make me merge into the unknowable Parama Purusa, into You. By Your anudhyána, by Your abhidhyána, I have attained You in my soul. It is Your grace.

In the psychic arena of my unit being, the loving touch of the Cosmic Entity is coming. It rouses the samvit and hladinii, with heart-filled determination. In my meditation, my mind sways from ideating on form to merging into formlessness, and finally loses all boundaries of limitation, and becomes one with that limitless Parama Puruśa. It is Your causeless krpa...

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #0573:

[1] Bha'va'tiita: This is one of the names of Parama Purusa and describes one of His infinite attributions. In His stance of bhava’tiita, Parama Purusa is beyond all thought conception. Bhava means thinking, and atiita means beyond. So bhavatiita means the Entity who is beyond all thought. If one tries to think of Bhavatiita - i.e. the Supreme Entity - then one’s mind gets suspended in His ideation and ceases to function. It is akin to the doll of salt that tries to measure the depths of the ocean. It dissolves before reaching the bottom and becomes one with the ocean. Similarly, the mind cannot reach that Entity who is Bhavatiita. As the unit mind tries to think of Him, the mind actually becomes one with Him, by His grace. That unit mind loses its individuality and merges into Him - it cannot remain separate. That is why He is called Bhavatiita.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Parama Purus'a, the Supreme Reality, is beyond all speech and thought: He is beyond the reach of the vocal cord. So He is bha'va'tiita ["beyond bha'va"]...The more one thinks of His infinite qualities, the more one becomes speechless, the more deeply one becomes absorbed in Him." (1)

[2] Samvit: Ananda Marga ideology says, "Samvit means spiritual consciousness, spiritual awakening. A man engaged in bad things all of a sudden feels that “No, I shouldn’t do all these things. No, I should be a good man henceforward.” Such an idea all of a sudden comes in his mind. And this thing, this change of mental tendency, is brought about by samvit shakti of Vidyámáyá. Do you follow? This is what is called samvit shakti. “No, henceforward I must be a good man. No, henceforward I must be a spiritualist. I must not encourage any depraving idea.” Samvit shakti." (2

[3] Hladinii: Ananda Marga ideology states, “Hládinii shakti means the shakti that helps, that propels, that directs, the jiiva towards the realm of supreme beatitude.” (3)

Power of thinking

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "That is, if one's object of thought is a thief, what will happen? What is the psychic process? When you think something, your mind is then and there divided into two parts. One subjective part, another is objective counterpart. And when you are thinking of a bad man, or a thief, what will happen? The objective counterpart of your mind will take the form of that thief, will take the form of that bad man, and slowly what will happen? Your subjective counterpart of the mind, that is, seer portion of the mind---one portion is seer and another portion is seeing. So, seer portion of the mind will be slowly converted into that bad man, and slowly you will become a bad man. So a bad man must not be your object of ideation, should not be your object of meditation. If you think of a bad man, you will become a bad man."
"You know, there is a particular insect in India, it is called pecasha-kiit'a. It kills cockroaches. You know the cockroach, that red insect? Yes, it kills cockroach. And cockroaches are very much afraid of that insect. So when a cockroach sees that insect, that insect becomes its object of ideation; that is, its objective counterpart of the mind  takes the form of---what? Cockroach. So what does happen? Slowly the body of the cockroach is converted into the body of that pecasha-kiit'a. That is, cockroach itself is converted into the form of its killer." (1)

Alleviating impotency

These days around the globe in so-called advanced countries impotency is on the rise, especially in “modern”, materialistic countries. One outcome of this is that adoption agencies earn a lot of money by bringing children from very poor areas like Africa, parts of Asia, and placing them in Euro-American countries for thousands of dollars. One of the underlying reasons behind this is that sexual impotence and infertility are on the rise. Here Baba gives the causes as well as the solutions to these health conditions.

Ananda Marga Yogic Treatments says, "If excessive waste of semen occurs due to the bad habit of masturbation during adolescence or youth, or due to lack of restraint in married life, the seminal fluid becomes thin and the symptoms of seminal weakness appear. This is also a kind of sexual debility, and it is called seminal infertility."

"A serious lack of sexual restraint will make the nerves of the pelvis and genitals weak or damaged...This is called genital impotency."

"As I have already said, impotency and infertility, in most cases if not all, are diseases of over-indulgence; so one should keep control over their thoughts and actions. The male should stay away from feminine company as long as the disease is not fully cured." (1)

Note 1: Those who suffer from this should take it very, very seriously. And others must understand so that they can help educate and serve the suffering masses. Looking around there are so many people who do not know these beautiful rules of Baba and they invite danger.

Note 2: Because of this the population is decreasing amongst certain communities.

When life becomes meaningful

Namaskar,

Those of a materialistic mindset think that power, post, money, and worldly relations are the base of life. They think, “I live and die for this - i.e. power, post, & money etc. For this, I have come on this earth to live happily and enjoy.” In this way, due to avidya maya they pass their whole life in drowsiness. They cannot comprehend this basic fact that what they are depending upon is not permanent. Those things cannot last forever.

In this universe, everything is moving and the speed of movement also varies. So when two people are moving in with a similar speed then they are called a family. But no two persons can maintain a similar speed for long. Either one moves away, dies, divorces, or their liking or disliking changes. What they formerly cherished has now become useless in their eyes.

That is why nothing in this created world can be the base of life. None of those things can provide permanent happiness. Animals cannot comprehend this simple truth - but humans can understand it. Those who fail to comprehend it are worse than animals. Only that Eternal Entity Parama Purusa alone is the base of life. He was with you, He is with you, and He will always be with you up to eternity. So when you have one Entity who always remains with You then why not cultivate a close and intimate relation with that Supreme Entity. That will signify the start of gaining real meaning and fulfillment of life.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "That which is finite cannot be the base of your life, because it will be used up and will leave your mind unsheltered. Thrusting you in the abyss of darkness, it will pursue its course on the unending path. Therefore, no one except Brahma, the beginningless, endless and infinite can be the object of your mind and the base of your life.” (1)

In Him,
Dhrti

Unemployment causes crime

According to Prout philosophy, "For the all-round welfare of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish."

"First people should not be retrenched from their livelihood unless alternative employment has been arranged for them."

Prout philosophy states, "Let us discuss what happens when people lose their livelihood. Take the example of rickshaw pullers in India. The work of rickshaw pullers is exhausting and poorly paid, but if it is declared illegal, many rickshaw pullers will become unemployed and their lives will become more miserable. Those who cannot find alternative employment will either die of starvation or become criminals in an effort to survive. In either case, society will be adversely affected. So, before this occupation is prohibited, rickshaw pullers should be provided with suitable alternative employment." (1)

Note: In failing to follow this important point, nowadays some countries are facing a whirlpool of criminal activity. One example is the situation in Iraq and the formation of ISIS / ISIL. When Saddam Hussein was in power and ruling over Iraq then he employed a huge army. When the US deposed of Saddam Hussein and dismantled the entire army, they imposed the order that those soldiers must not be given any work. Without a guaranteed job, those soldiers formed themselves into the terrorist, fighting brigade known as ISIS / ISIL that is currently wreaking havoc throughout the region. ISIS / ISIL is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths of innocent people and wanton destruction throughout the land. And the root cause is that Hussein's fighting forces lost their jobs without any guarantee of other employment.

Sadhana timing & sandhyas + 3 more

Baba
Sadhana timing & sandhyas

Namaskar,

Before going into the Baba’s room I had many questions, but once inside His room He saturated and ensconced me in His endless bliss. In that exalted state, I did not have any desire or energy to ask anything from Him. After quite some time, with a very soft, sweet voice, Baba asked, "What time do you do sadhana every day?"
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

I replied, “Baba, I do not have a fixed time. Usually every day the time differs.”

Baba smiled and told, "That's why I asked you the question. For better sadhana, the time should be fixed. It is just like if your sleeping time is fixed, then at that moment time tiredness comes. And if one’s food time is fixed, then at that moment you will feel hunger. In contrast, if you do not have a fixed time for taking food then you will invite stomach diseases like acidity, if you eat when you are not hungry etc. The human body functions best when one has a routine or habit. Randomly changing the time of taking food and going to sleep will disturb the body and mind. The same is the case with sadhana, asanas etc. For better health in all the realms - physical, psychic and spiritual - one should follow a strict routine. Sadhana also needs a fixed timing. If the time is set and one practices daily at that time, then naturally at that moment you will like to do sadhana. And sadhana will be better."

When Baba guided me about all these points, I did not have any question or any desire to ask anything. And after some time, very lovingly He told that, "Now you should go." After doing sastaunga pranam with a heavy heart, unwillingly I came out.

Conclusion

Strict priority should be given to sadhana and creating and following a proper routine. Because sadhana is the most important aspect of life.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "Human life is short. It is wise to get all the instructions regarding sadhana as soon as possible." (1)

Namaskar,
In Him,
Ananda Maungal

~ In-depth study ~

The four sandhyas

Baba has given the following definition of the four sandhya's, i.e. junction of time.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states,"The four sandhya's:
(1) The period from forty-five minutes before to forty-five minutes after sunrise is called 'dawn', and dawn is the first sandhya'.
(2) The period from 9 A.M. to 12 noon is called the noon sandhya'.
(3) The period from forty-five minutes before to forty-five minutes after sunset is called the evening sandhya'.
(4) The period from forty-five minutes before to forty-five minutes after 12 midnight is called the midnight sandhya' (11:15 P.M. to 12:45 A.M.)." (2)

In daytime, 9a to 12p is very important; and at night 12a - 3a is highly important.

Sandyas: ancient tantrika system

The entire system of tantrika sadhana was invented by Lord Shiva. And that very time -- 7000 years ago -- human beings were calculating everything in the night by the presence of stars in the sky or their various primitive ways. The modern system for calculating the time had not been formulated. They founded the period we term as midnight. Various junctions of day and night play a very significant role in infusing the good qualities, sentient feeling in the human mind. And these junction periods in tantrika language are called as "sandhya.”

In the past, I was thinking that sandhyas were something dogmatic. The various Hindu dogmatic rituals observe sandhya' in their prayers etc. In the temples, they do their rituals and worship in the morning, in the evening, and at midday etc. That's why I was thinking that the sandhya' theory is dogma.

However, in the true sense, in our day to day life, these four sandhya's - (a) morning, (b) midday, (c) evening, and (d) midnight - are very significant for our various types of sadhana. Not only sadhana, but other dos and dont's are also involved. Baba has written about this in various discourses and books.

For instance, among the four sandhya's, three sandhya's are very good for bathing.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "Bathing at midnight is prohibited. One must not take a bath in the midnight sandhya'. Everyone must bathe in any one of the other three sandhya's. Taking into consideration one's health and the climatic conditions, one may also bathe in one or both of the remaining two sandhya's." (3)

About Brahma Muhurta

For longevity, one has to get up in brahma muhurta. That is just 45 minutes before sunrise.

Baba says, "Brahma Muhurta. 45 minutes before sunrise; the best time for meditation. At that time the omnipresence of Brahma is felt." (In the Land of Hattama'la)

In this morning sandhya', paincajanya is also done.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "At five o'clock every morning, sa'dhakas [spiritual aspirants] will assemble at a ja'grti, and where there is no ja'grti, at a fixed convenient place, and participate in singing five minutes of Prabha'ta Sam'giita, in performing fifteen minutes of kiirtana, and lastly in performing ten minutes of collective meditation. This should be the practice on all days of the week except Sundays. On Sundays, there should be singing of ten minutes of Prabha'ta Sam'giita, performance of fifteen minutes of kiirtana, and performance of at least ten minutes of collective meditation. This programme is known as Pa'incajanya." (4)

Timing of kapalika & madhura sadhana

There is a three-hour period allotted for kapalika sadhana, from midnight for three hours up to 3am. While madhura sadhana can only be done during the 1.5 hour period of midnight sandhya', i.e. from 11:15pm to 12:45am.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "As a general rule the grace of Parama Purus'a is expressed through positive microvita in different plexi. Noticeably or conceivably a sweet aroma comes from the concerned plexus. When a spiritual aspirant attains mental concentration or composure, as in madhura sa'dhana' [a particular type of meditation], he or she experiences a sweet aroma and the mind feels peaceful or composed. Parama Purus'a gives the bliss of tactuality through different plexi." (5)

Life is for sadhana

Baba gives the following lines which convey a deep sense of how life is only for sadhana.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "The worship of Brahma should be done scrupulously, or else you will later regret and bemoan the futility of your life with the last drop of your tears at your last hour.  You should make your life worthwhile through your Sa'dhana'.  How much can your worldly friends and relations do for you? After your death your relatives may perhaps ask, "How much money has he left behind?"  Your friends may go to the crematorium and indulge in flattering reminiscences about you.  Your husband or wife may cry for you for about ten or twelve days and then regain their normal composure.  Your lot will be only a profound sigh -- a record of the futility and frustration of your life.  So do not waste your time lest you later have to repent."

"Vrtha' janma goina'yaluin hena Prabhu na' bhojaluin
Khoya'yalu soha gun'anidhi,
Hama'r karama manda na milala eka bunda
Premasindhu rasaka abadhi.

Fruitless, O Lord, has been my life
That sang not of glories Thine;
Lost in the worldly strife
And lost Thee, most precious treasure of mine.

Fate's long and ominous hand
With compassion, cold and daft,
Strayed me out of Thy Love's strand
Deprived, alas of a single Draught." (6)

On this occasion, Baba gave me the opportunity to go inside His room and massage His feet. That was unforgettable: such a soft touch of His fragrant His body. I was aware that Baba never uses any scent. The sweet aroma which was coming from His body had no comparison. It was so divinely intoxicating that my voice was choked - full of bliss.

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. If you want to forward this story then attach the following yellow section with the story:

“Courtesy of unknown bhakta via Ananda Marga Universal (https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/)”

This will be treated as the standard protocol.

Unable to tie You

Note: Only those who sincerely practice the higher lessons of sahaja yoga meditation can understand this song in the depths of their heart.

“Sudurer sakhá káche eso, káchetheke bhálobáso…” (Prabhat Samgiita #1198)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, my "distant” Sakha, kindly come very near me. My most intimate and closest One, mercifully shower Your love and affection on me. Sit beside me with Your pink feet, sweet face, and soft smile. Bring Yourself to me in various ways. My Sakha’, my heart can’t bear any separation from You any longer. Without You, my life is dry and meaningless.

My eternal Friend, this entire universe is indeed Your idol. I cannot paint anything with my brush that resembles You. Nobody is similar to You. No matter how hard I try to find anything or anyone identical to You, You remain beyond all comparisons and reside above all.

Baba, as You are free from all bondages, I am unable to tie You by my stava stuti or ritualistic prayers etc. You are all-pervading and never held within the confines of so-called holy places. You are not bound to any dogmatic religious places like Varanasi, Mecca, Jerusalem, Ananda Nagar, Tiljala, and Jamalpur etc. You are everywhere…

Note for Prabhat Samgiita #1198:

Sakhá: Ananda Marga ideology states, "'Samapranah sakha smrtah'. Where love and devotion are so overwhelming that it appears as if there is only one entity in two bodies, such a pair is known as 'sakha'. The bhakta, the devotee, is the sakha of Parama Purusa, because the bhakta can never think of him or herself as a separate entity from Him. Here he altogether forgets that he is separated from God. That is why Parama Purusa is also a sakha to His bhaktas and the bhakta is the sakha of Parama Purusa...You should also know-- you should remember this truth - that the only well-wisher that you have in this universe...the only sakha is Parama Purusa." Baba supports all places, not just AN

Namaskar,

It is common knowledge that wherever Baba went and toured for DMC etc He openly ordered all margiis / Wts in general darshan to (a) construct a jagrti and a Baba Quarter, (b) start a press, (c) create a master unit, and (d) open new schools etc. To further accentuate this, Baba would refuse to take His breakfast until the local Ananda Marga newspaper was given to Him to read. This was the case with all places He visited for DMC etc, including Ananda Nagar. But, other than in Ananda Nagar, those talks were not recorded. And that is the reason why people forgot about how Baba was ordering all important centers and places to build up such projects.

About this, whatever Baba spoke in AN was meticulously recorded and printed in the book, whereas this was not done in other places. And, slowly over time, some got confused on this point and thought that Baba only wanted to build Ananda Nagar. This type of half-truth propaganda campaign was going on such that now this dogma, this myth - that only Ananda Nagar should be built up - is in full swing.

With this mistaken perspective, they thought that Baba only had Ananda Nagar on His radar, and other places were off the track.

This fact that Baba gave orders to build up all important centers and places can be verified by asking those margis and Wts who were present those days. But after a few hundred years, it will not be possible to verify the facts in this manner. Rather, people will only be relying upon written records and audio recordings that indicate that only Ananda Nagar should be built up and developed. By this misnomer, the whole AM society of this entire globe will be exploited forever.

In Him,
Parakastha

Note: In those units where Baba was unable to visit, in reporting He allotted the duty to Wts and margiis to go to those places and build those aforementioned projects.

Elderly people should be alert before going to AN

Ananda Nagar is cold in January so those arriving from warmer coastal areas often have difficulty and suffer. For this reason those attending from tropical regions and coastal areas should bring proper winter clothes etc, especially elderly people as they often die due to exposure to cold weather across the whole of India. This has been documented. Just ask the director or in-charge of any cemetery and they will tell you that many, many die, especially elderly people, during the extremely hot and extremely cold seasons. The number of deaths increases 175% to 200% during mid-June and New Year’s, i.e. for 1.5 months in the summer and 1.5 months in the winter. Another problem is that there is no modern emergency medical care at DMS. So if someone has a heart attack there will not be proper medical treatment. So watch out. Those who are physically weak and / or aged should be extremely cautious.

Best & worst bonds

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "It is the sense of duty that causes one person to renounce everything; and it is the sense of duty that inspires another person to readily accept the burden of caring for his or her family. It is the sense of duty that makes a person great. Of all bonds, the bond of duty is the strongest, and the bond of moha [blind attachment or infatuation] is the worst. Humanity will have to break the bonds of moha and increase the bonds of duty willingly and consciously. This is the law." (1)
