Tobacco Industry and Child Labor: PROUT solution

Baba

Tobacco Industry and Child Labor: PROUT solution

Namaskar,

Here is a case study about exploitative business practices of the Tobacco industry. Below is an excerpt from an investigative article on the malpractices adopted by tobacco manufacturers to maximize their profits by exploiting the poor. Cigarettes sold in developed countries contain tobacco leaves produced on farms in impoverished countries by children of tenant farmers working on these tobacco fields. This is an example of how the vices of a few rich people are costing many children their childhood and education. Children in poor developing nations such as the ones listed below are forced to stay out of school and work in tobacco farms under hard conditions to produce leaves for cigarettes sold in the so-called first-world nations like US, UK, and other European countries. These children are from impoverished families trapped in generational poverty and have no choice but to work shoulder to shoulder with adults in their family to supplement family income to fulfill their families' basic needs. In the end, the tobacco industry profits from this hard labor and does not adequately compensate these toiling farmers and their children on tobacco farms. Tobacco firms make empty promises of preventing children from working on these farms which they never live up to. This is the dire situation today in an industry which produces Cigarettes, a product which is not only non-essential and totally unnecessary for leading a good life, but also harmful to those who use them. Overall this is a situation in which everyone else, but the capitalists are losing something. The biggest loss to the society is the loss of its children's hope for a bright future. (see ref A)

Analysis of the situation by PROUT philosophy - 1

On the face of it, this is a case of economic exploitation. The root of the problem, however, lies deep in the psychic diseases of the human mind such as greed of the exploiters, fear and ignorance of the exploited and lack of morality in the so-called developed nations, where both tobacco consumption and finding means of livelihood by selling tobacco are not looked upon as disgusting vices and shunned. This is a multi-faceted problem and solutions lie in Ananda Marga's spiritual, social and economic philosophies.

From an economic point of view, awakening the masses to PROUT, educating them and implementing PROUT in every socio-economic unit is the only solution to rampant economic exploitation by capitalists.

Ananda Marga Philosophy says, "PROUT always stands for the cause of exploited people, irrespective of race, nation, religion etc., and always opposes all types of exploitation. But as poverty is the main problem in the world today, PROUT gives top priority to opposing economic exploitation, as this affects the livelihood and existence of the people. To solve this problem and other pressing socio-economic problems, popular movements based on anti-exploitation and universal sentiments should be launched throughout the world. Such movements should oppose all forms of economic, psychic, cultural and psycho-economic exploitation. In addition, they should undertake appropriate practical programs to enhance the all-round welfare of the people." (1)

Analysis of the situation by PROUT philosophy - 2

With the above teaching, Baba emphasizes an urgent need for socio-economic movements against exploitation. These revolutions need to focus on ensuring everyone in a socio-economic unit has access to the basic necessities of life, food, clothing, housing, healthcare, and education. None of these necessities should be handed over to the people as dole-outs but need to be a result of increased purchasing capacity guaranteed by employment to 100% of the population in any socio-economic unit. Now, the problem we see here in the case study is, despite being employed on tobacco farms, these poor farmers have no guarantee of a sustained income to provide for themselves and their families because greedy capitalists and big tobacco firms, who benefit from this cheap human labor are diverting the profits gained from growing tobacco leaves on these farms to other socio-economic units for their own benefits. One important PROUTistic guideline Baba gives in this respect is below.
(see Baba's quote, ref B)

PROUT propounds an economic model that functions through maximum utilization of local resources and labor for the benefit of the local socio-economic unit. This is a structure in which small-scale industries and cooperatives are encouraged where the laborers have a direct stake in the profit earned in this process. There is no question of the results of the labor of one socio-economic unit leaving that unit and benefiting individuals elsewhere. A PROUTistic economy is a decentralized economic model. In this model, every socio-economic unit has economic democracy in which all materials are produced in that particular unit is for consumption to satisfy the basic needs of the people first rather than for maximizing profits. This model ensures each and every socio-economic unit functions in a sustainable and self-sufficient manner.  However, in the current capitalistic economy, we see just the opposite happening and as consequence families are stuck in generational poverty, ultimately making their children victims in this process. So, what is the solution?

Solution

As long as multinational corporations are involved, the situation cannot be solved. Because these multinational corporations will never give fair value due to their greed for maximum exploitation.

In this case, the raw material is the tobacco plant.

  • The cigarette factory should also be established in the very same socio-economic units where the tobacco plant is grown. And all the labor working in this industry must be local to that socio-economic unit or samaj.
  • To establish these new industries, local people should be given government loans, and in that way they can form cooperatives.
  • Those who are in some or other way involved in this process-- from cultivation to final product-- only they will be allowed to join as shareholders in running the entire project. Outsiders and non-involved people will not be permitted to join the cooperative. That is, middlemen will not be allowed.
  • From beginning to end, the entire process will be controlled by local people. From cultivation of the crop to the final product, all will be managed and controlled by local people.
  • The import of finished tobacco products should be banned. Surplus finished goodes should be exported.
  • Gradually, those who are addicted to tobacco products should be convinced to give up their bad habits. And slowly, this tobacco industry should be converted to another industry which is based on any other sort of local resources which are available.

With this approach, in the absence of multinational corporations or capitalist middlemen, there will not be any exploitation. This is the permanent solution.

In Him,
Prakasha

In-depth Study
How to end this exploitation - 1

Ananda Marga Philosophy says, "Those spiritual revolutionaries who work to achieve such progressive changes for human elevation on a well-thought, pre-planned basis, whether in the physical, metaphysical or spiritual sphere, by adhering to the principles of Yama and Niyama, are sadvipras... Now the duty of the sadvipra is to see that the dominating class does not take recourse to exploitation." (3)

Sadvipras, essentially, are spiritually awakened, and intellectually sound revolutionaries, strongly established in Yama and Niyama, who by the dint of their intellect guided by their spiritual strength can bring changes in the society in all three spheres of existence, physical, psychic and spiritual. Sadvipras are the harbingers of change and have a huge responsibility of ensuring no one particular group is exploited.

Ananda Marga Philosophy says, "Sadvipras are not inactive witnesses. They are active participants to see that no person or class exploits the rest. For this, they may have to resort even to physical violence, because the sadvipras will have to strike at the source of the power [of the class] which is tending to become the exploiter. In case the kśatriya class are becoming exploiters, the sadvipras may have to resort to physical force, and in an age where the intellectual or vipra class are dominating, they will have to bring about a revolution in the intellectual field. In case the vaeshyas are dominating, the sadvipras may have to contest and win elections, because the vaeshya class rules by democracy, and the democratic set-up enables them to accumulate undue gains." (4)

How to end this exploitation - 2
Ananda Margiis around the world will have to endeavor to become sadvipras themselves. Sadvipras will then have to work towards the spiritual and intellectual awakening of the masses by propagating tenets of Dharma, Yama, and Niyama. Any revolution that happens in the society motivated by an external physical or psychic coercion, without being inspired by an internal intellectual understanding of problems of the day, will either die soon or get misguided when the external coercion wanes away. Hence, it is imperative that the socio-economic movements and revolutions be guided by internal inspiration one gains by the strength of spirituality and intellect guided by the Supreme Consciousness. To this end, it becomes the bounden duty of sadvipras to intellectually and spiritually inspire the masses to strengthen the resolve of the society from within to fight the exploiters. Sadvipras in the society should propagate Ananda Marga philosophy to help the masses identify all forms of exploitation like capitalism, religious dogma etc. and fight against them fearlessly. They need to introduce the masses to refined ideas like the purity of occupation or Samyak Ájiiva, being an essential factor on the path of salvation. By this, one understands the need to have an honorable profession. In a society built on a foundation of these refined subtle tenets of Ananda Marga Philosophy, there is no scope for one to adopt selling tobacco as one's profession, let alone use it as a means to exploit the weaker sections of the society to amass wealth. A well-knit society based on the ideals of cosmic brotherhood is the need of the hour. All socio-economic movements and sadvipras spearheading these movements should endeavor to create such a social structure for universal welfare.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Then the fourth one is Samyak Ájiiva, proper physical and psychic occupation. One may earn money by stealing but it is not called a proper occupation. One may earn money by gambling but it is also not a proper occupation. One’s occupation should be pure. It must not go against the interest of the collective body." (5)

"The Guardian’s investigation found:
  • In Malawi: Children being taken out of school to weed the tobacco fields and harvest the leaves by parents who live in dire poverty. Some families in straw huts are paid nothing for 10 months until the tobacco crop is sold after the harvest. They live on a pail of maize a week provided by their landlords and must raise money to mill it by extra piecework in the fields, often also done by the children.
  • In Mexico: The Guardian saw children working in seven of 10 plantations visited in March in the Nayarit region, despite progress being made by industry and government to tackle the problem and keep children in school.
The US Department of Labor lists 16 countries where children are suspected to work in tobacco. Human rights organizations including Human Rights Watch have documented child labor in the tobacco fields in Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Brazil and most recently Zimbabwe.
Each kilo of tobacco is estimated to provide enough for 1,200 cigarettes; tenant farmers in Kasungu last year earned 200 kawacha (30 cents or 23p) per kilo when the crop was sold."

Ananda Marga Philosophy says, "Capitalists, in either their singular or collective forms, are the most pernicious economic exploiters today. All over the world they are continually exploiting local economies and draining their wealth. In nearly all cases the profits they accrue are spent outside the local area and remitted to outside stockholders and parent companies. An essential measure to control this economic exploitation is that the speculative markets in all countries of the world should be closed down immediately.... labour-intensive industries based on the collective minimum requirements of life should be started immediately or made more productive where they already exist. These industries should be based on the consumption motive. They should also provide a rational profit in order to guarantee adequate purchasing capacity to those employed in them and to ensure their continued existence and growth." (2)

Dogma: Shhhh! Keep quiet + 2 more

Baba

Dogma: Shhhh! Keep quiet

Namaskar,

Human beings have been blessed by the Cosmic Entity in a unique way. Humans have been empowered with the ability to express themselves with words and developed language. So if ever humans are suffering due to rampant exploitation, they have the special ability to verbalize their pain. No other type of being has the capability of using language and words to describe their plight; this is unique to human life.

AMPS: kidnapped by cheats, characterless

Those who fail to use this quality are sub-humans, or worse than that. Although they have a human body their condition is worse than even a bug. When animals are threatened, tortured, or exploited, they cannot express their agony in a profound way that will awaken others to the injustices that abound. All those animals can do is wail and cry. Whereas human beings have the ability to express their feeling in a precise and coherent manner. They can describe in detail what happened and how they suffered in agony at the hands of the exploiters.

When caged and tortured, animals know they are not happy but they cannot express their distress to others in words - nor in a logical and descriptive manner. So human beings have a unique role to play. Those telling others to not to make a hue & cry about injustices are trying to suppress this unique human quality. They are the veritable enemies of humanity. That is why Baba guides us to raise our voice against exploitation and make everyone aware of the issue. People should be informed and awakened to the fact that loose, debauched people are sitting in AMPS central. By this way we can bring sentient peace, by His grace. When society is governed by unqualified, characterless, thieves and criminals then that is black peace. This is terribly detrimental to the all round progress of society. It is the duty of the disciples of Baba to bring sentient peace in AMPS.

Sadguru’s direction to His disciples

Sadguru Baba has built our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha on the pillars of freedom of expression, open communication, logic, and rationality. Everyone is welcome to share their opinion and bring their view according to the given system. Baba has empowered each and every member of our Marga with the right to voice their say when they see any injustice or wrong being done.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "All A'nanda Ma'rgiis, when they see other ma'rgiis acting against the principles of yama and niyama, must make them shun this habit either by sweet or harsh words or by dealing even more strictly. Thus they will have to make the society strong." (1)

Baba's above guideline is one of the many places in His body of Ananda Marga teachings which grants the right for any sadhaka to speak out against any misdeed etc.
In direct opposition to this, the dogmatic religions operate in a vastly different way. Those religious heads do not want there to be any rational discussion amongst their followers.

Prout philosophy states, "The worst propounders of dogma --the kings of dogma -- do not want people to develop mental clarity. They do not want the penetrating illumination of the sun's light to pierce through the mists of dogma. They do not want people to bathe in the radiant light of the day and stand under the clear, unclouded sky...In fact, the very attempt to find the path of rationality [is] considered blasphemous." (2)

According to the above teaching, in the dogmatic religions like Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam etc, the lay people are not allowed to freely express their thoughts. That is against the code - i.e. sinful. For this reason their followers mostly keep quiet and do not say a word about any controversial topic.

AMPS: positive way forward - 1

In the early 1990's, our AMPS was going down a similar road as those religions. Those in the helm were imposing one after another dogmatic proclamations such as the eradication of bhukti pradhan rights, so-called mahaprayan, Fake Ananda Vanii, scriptural distortions etc, and due to their unawareness the general Marga population was just accepting those dogmas. No one was raising any point against those exploitative actions. But now the situation is turning around completely. Family margiis and general Wts are coming forward and discussing how to apply Baba's divine guidelines to organisational life. So by Baba's grace we have moved away from that phase of suppression and are step by step moving towards unity in ideology.

By looking around and evaluating the state of affairs in AMPS it evident that there are numerous positive transformations taking place.

1. Debating the way AMPS should proceed is itself a sign of margiis' and wts' investment in the organisation. If there was apathy all around then people would not care about the collective and they would just attend to their own unit existence. But because in the core of their hearts Ananda Margiis are linked with AMPS, for that reason they are vociferously discussing the various viewpoints. So this type of psychic investment in AMPS is completely positive since it demonstrates involvement and commitment, and it will bring about a bold new phase in AMPS.

2. Those not understanding the way things are going these days in AMPS think that everything is awry. They get confused by seeing all the exchanges. But this is a period of pause whereby our AMPS Pracaraka Samgha will get cleansed and renewed and be able to move ahead exponentially faster in the upcoming period of speed. Baba furthermore explains that pause is a necessary feature to bring the ensuing phase of speed and progress. That is why Baba proclaims that periods of pause are wholly positive and beneficial.

AMPS: positive way forward - 2

3. With so much ideological discussion, new dogmas cannot sprout up, and the old dogmas are getting eliminated. That is another important development.

4. With their increased awareness, margiis and wts want to see things fixed in AMPS and everyone wants to follow Baba. No one is proclaiming that we should start doing dogmatic idol worship in AMPS. Rather everyone agrees that Ananda Marga ideology is divine. And there is less talk about people's private agendas and more interest in implementing Baba's guidelines. Given this entire set of ingredients, it is only a matter of time before our AMPS becomes a sterling representation of His perfect, timeless teachings.

Our AMPS society is collectively shedding itself of all dogmas and quickly moving ahead - reaching that grand new era: The apex of human expression.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Modern, educated people must be liberated from all sources of dogma and petty isms. They should reject the worn out shackles of the past and welcome the new, crimson dawn with an open mind. This will prepare the way for all-round success in human life, and the attainment of the highest fulfillment." (3)

Did not want the world to know what they were doing

Here Baba demonstrates how the ruthless communists are no different than the dogmatic religious leaders.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Question: Why was everything in communist countries done under the dark veil of the iron curtain?"
"Answer: Because they were conscious of the loopholes in communism and they did not want the world to know what they were doing." (4)

So the communists also never allow freedom of expression because they are attached to their ugly dogma-- even though they are aware that it is inherently faulty.

Dogmatic religions vs scene in AMPS

When any of the dogmatic religions like Christianity divide into various factions then there is no concerted effort to unify all the scattered factions. Each fragment peacefully rallies around their own dogma. So this is all their superficial display of unity.

In contrast, in AMPS the overwhelming majority - all rational wt's & margiis - wants to see everyone together under the unified front of Ananda Marga ideology. That is why there is so much public debate in AMPS  these days. Because no one is satisfied by seeing any group break away. And all want to bring everyone back together - to achieve unity. That is why all the debates going on nowadays is a good thing-- it is a healthy development.

Unity in religions

So today we are confronted with a scene of contrasts. Today in our AMPS there is open and frank discussion about our current problems. And by this way some are thinking that this is pushing us into a deeper state of disunity. But in the true sense it is positive. Whereas in the dogmatic religions, there are no debates going on amongst the followers. So it looks like they are all working together in a unified way. But this is not the case. Rather all those religious followers are wrapped in the cloak of dogma.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "All human beings want to lead a secure, harmonious life, and have the opportunity to express themselves and progress. However, religious dogma goes against these fundamental human aspirations. Some priests, for example, say that if women dance their feet will become useless, therefore they should not dance. This is dogma." (5)

In those dogmatic faiths the lay people keep quiet and do not say a word. But by witnessing this none should conclude that because these religions have achieved a deep state of unity. It is not so. Rather due to the excessive onslaught of dogma those followers have been indoctrinated to accept their fate and bow down at the hands of those religious exploiters. So those dogmatic religions are not grounded in unity, rather the silence is due to the extreme imposition of dogma and wanton exploitation.

Epilogue

Nowadays, there is a strong upsurge of thought and a grand awakening going on throughout our AMPS. One can even say that this is the highest wave of renewal in our AMPS since the pre-1990 era. So this is one very great development - and it will surely lead to the creation of true unity in AMPS.

Accompanying this wonderful resurgence, in all realms of our AMPS society, there is more and more debate and discussion. Seeing this discussion, a few have become concerned. When in actuality, if we view the matter a little more deeply and see beneath the surface, then it becomes evident that all the debate is itself the manifestation of the great transformation and regeneration taking place in our AMPS.

Sign of good sadhaka

Baba says, "The mind of the man whose consciousness or discriminating judgement is awakened-- whose power of judgment is intense, always remains wedded to the 'Buddhi'. That is to say, his rein (mind) remains constantly under the control of the charioteer (Buddhi or discriminating intellect), and so, quite naturally, his organs remain loyal to the Buddhi. Random rambles of the organ-like horses (organs) will cut no ice with him. But in a case like this if the horses (organs) be bad and untrained, i.e. the organs are faulty, it becomes impossible for the charioteer (discriminating intellect) to get the desired result. Hence for the right functioning of the chariot (body), well-trained horses (organs) are indispensable. A sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) also should train himself likewise. His mind, body, intellect, and organs should be directed towards the Blissful Spirit (Shreya)." (1)

Wts & fish + 5 more

Baba

Wts & fish

Namaskar,

You may know that in certain Ananda Marga units around the globe, some Wts maintain ponds for cultivating and selling fish. Unfortunately, some are involved in this type of dealing. Here is more about what they are doing.

On various Ananda Marga land parcels, wherever there is sufficient space, they maintain ponds for growing fish. Then those Wts get the word out in the community that all are welcome to come and fish those ponds for a fee. Essentially, Wts are selling "fishing rights" to locals, and in turn those villagers can come onsite to catch and eat the fish from the pond. This is the type of venture that is going on. Sadly, those Wts are going against bhagavat dharma and neo-humanism.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Violation of samyak ajiiva

Baba has given the teaching of samyak ajiiva, or proper livelihood. That means that one should earn their living doing proper work that is beneficial for society. Those who are exploiting and slaughtering fish for gaining profits are in complete violation of Guru’s teaching. Their livelihood is sinful. Such Wts are going against dharma; theirs is not the right path as their mode of doing business is harmful. It is against the ethic of neo-humanism. So those Wts engaged in fish-selling business in the name of pisiculture should seriously reconsider what they are doing. Their livelihood is against Baba’s teachings of samyak ajiiva and they will have to face the consequences - i.e. negative reaction.

Why there should be pisiculture

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Pisciculture should also be developed in ponds and lakes. The fish help to keep the water clean and the level constant because their breathing creates water and carbon dioxide. The fish inhale oxygen along with water vapour from the atmosphere as well as dissolved oxygen from the water. They synthesize water which is exhaled into the lake. This helps to keep the water in the lake at a constant level. If many fish live in a lake, hundreds and even thousands of gallons of water will be added to the size of the lake in the course of time. Each lake should also have an attached bird sanctuary, because the fish provide food for the birds.” (1)

So there should be pisiculture, but not so that humans can kill and eat fish. Rather pisiculture keeps the water clean, produces more water for the lake, and provides ecological balance, on the whole.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Fish should not be the food of human beings, but the food of jackals, birds, foxes and other fish and crabs. If the paddy water drains into ponds, lakes or rivers, small fish will flourish and become the food of larger fish, birds and animals. In this way the farmers will be helping maintain ecological balance.” (2)

Those workers indulged in selling fish mistakenly think that by keeping such fish ponds they are following Baba's system of pisciculture. But this is not correct. As noted above, Baba's system of pisciculture is for ecological balance and water conservation - not the wanton killing and selling of fish. Today's capitalistic fishing industries exploit the fish for profits etc. But that is not our way; and no one should be led to believe that is Baba's system. Baba's given program of pisciculture is for ecological sustainability, animal welfare, and the benefit of all beings.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

In our Ananda Marga, pisciculture does not mean the killing and selling of fish. Our vision and practice of pisciculture is for ecological balance - i.e. keeping the water pure and clean, and preserving various species etc. So pisciculture preserves the environment, keeps the ponds active so fish can thrive, and enables birds and other creatures to survive as they depend upon fish for food. So those Wts and Ananda Marga master units that kill and sell fish for profit should stop this type of business, and allow those animals to thrive. Our dictum should be, “Live and let live.”

Namaskar,

Ranjana’ Banerjee

~ In-depth study ~

Some may think that and catching and eating fish is pisciculture, but there are so many things done in the general society that we do not condone and we cannot impose or enforce our rules on the common public. On AMPS premises and in our institutions, things like slaughterhouses and the killing fish, or any types of activities are not allowed. Ananda Marga properties are the place to practice and propagate bhagavad dharma. That is why Baba prohibits such activities. While introducing animal sanctuaries Baba told that there will not be any meat-eating animals in our sanctuaries because we would have to supply meat to them. And that we cannot do that. For this reason, in Ananda Nagar etc there are many animals in our care / sanctuaries, but not lions or other flesh-eating animals.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Animals trust humans - but when they see a weapon they realize

Next Baba points out the hypocritical and way that some humans treat animals. They superficially treat animals as friends one moment and then butcher them the next - often to get a profit. Is this not what some Wts are doing with their fish.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Passing through many lives as worms, insects, birds, and animals, they have undergone countless pains, miseries, tortures and humiliations. Take for example the life of a goat. A goat spends its life eating grass, until the day comes when the butcher grabs it, kills it, skins it and sells its flesh piece by piece in the market. That goat at one time had to live such a miserable life. But today it has forgotten all this. Through a process of forward movement, today it may have attained a human life." (3)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Human life is more secure than animal life. Many animals live in the jungle where there is something to fear every minute; where the weak are the prey of the strong. To escape this atmosphere of fear and insecurity, many wild animals have sought refuge with human beings. They have been fed grass, leaves and other types of fodder until the right moment came to kill them for their flesh. Even today, this is generally what happens. Animals fully trust human beings; they trust them even up to one minute before their death. But when they see a person approaching them with a weapon in hand, they realize that those they had trusted as their friends are actually their enemies. Although human beings feed their animals, the love or attachment which they have for them is purely external. There is no genuine love in humans. This is how wretched animal life can be." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy says,  "Every human being has had to pass through that sort of painful animal life in the past. But that does not mean we should be the cause of misery for those animals who have taken shelter with us today. On the contrary, we should have a merciful attitude towards them. A woman who has been badly treated or humiliated by her mother-in-law should be careful that she does not treat her daughter-in-law in the same way. Human beings should carry out their duties properly in the external world and should always ensure that no being suffers unnecessarily from any undue mistreatment. In the physical sphere, the rights of all should be protected." (5)

Preaching gospel of peace yet slaughtering

As responsible human beings and as sadhakas, we should abide by Baba's following teachings.

Ananda philosophy says, "We should live with the policy of “Live and let others live”." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology says, "For each and every living entity one’s personal life is the dearest thing. One loves one’s personal life very much. This is the rule, this is the characteristic of all living beings. But those people who understand this sentiment of living beings and love others with the thought, “I should not kill, I should not give them any trouble because they love their life as much as I love my own life”, are true sádhus and those who lack this sentiment are not sádhus, they are asádhu. Preaching the gospels of peace, and at the same time slaughtering chickens, is not a proper thing for a sádhu because the one who kills the chickens loves his life and the chickens also love their own lives. So that man lacks the universal sentiment of love. He is not a sádhu. A sádhu must be vegetarian." (7)

Thus it is very clear that we should allow other beings to joyously live their lives, and we should not needlessly harm or kill them. That is our ethic in Ananda Marga. And that is Baba's teaching. Certainly every Ananda Margii understands this.

Selfish justification of over-population

Sadly, greedy fish-selling dadas or fish-eating people give their own logic. They wrongly proclaim that, “If we do not catch and sell fish then there will be an overabundance of fish - there will be fish will be everywhere.” Here below Sadguru Baba points out their defective mentality.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Then there are physico-psychic ailments. Some people argue that animals have been created by Parama Puruśa for our food. I knew a certain person who used to say that if people do not eat goats’ meat, the world would become populated only by goats. And others said that if people don’t eat chickens, there would not be even a single inch of space on this earth – it would be filled with chickens! Now my point is, even though human beings do not eat vultures, is there a crowd of vultures in the world? How foolish such people are! People don’t eat earthworms – has there been an uncontrollable growth of earthworms on earth? Only out of excessive greed, people eat chickens and goats and are simply searching for logic to support their actions and cover up their weakness. This sort of cunning will not do. In the mobility of the psychic world, there are certain defective thoughts prevailing – that we humans are destined to rule this earth, and the creatures are destined to be ruled by us. You will have to fight against this type of psychology with the help of your strong weapon. What is that weapon? Neohumanism. All have the equal right to live here: this universe is for all. It is not the patrimony of human beings only.” (8)

Your affectionate tales

"Ámi tomáy bhálobási jánái kii kare...” (Prabhat Samgiita #3837)

Purport:

O' Parama Purusa, I love You. Please tell me how I can make You understand the feeling of my heart. For me, You are my everything. My eyes ceaselessly shower tears of yearning for You. I do not have any words to express my prema. My heart longs for You.

O' Parama Purusa, when the new dawn comes, then in that crimson sunrise, I see Your divine refulgence. You shower Your brilliance everywhere. In the form of innumerable flowers and also in the fragrance of the niipa blossom, You grace everyone by pouring Your exquisite sweetness. In the eastern crimson horizon through the sweet, gentle breeze, You tenderly call me.

O' Parama Purusa Baba, in the auspicious and charming moment of the colourful evening sunset, with Your infinite love You always radiate Your sweet smile. That very time You reassuringly tell me that, "Now is the time for you to take rest; tomorrow I will come calling for you." These are the kind words You whisper to me in that tender moment. You are always with me. Your affectionate tales eternally float throughout this entire universe and also in my mind, in my heart.

Baba, You are my everything...

Note for Prabhat Samgiia #3837: Love is not unilateral

[1] First Stanza: The first stanza reflects the idea that the love between bhakta and Parama Purusa is bilateral, and not one-sided.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Human beings love Parama Purus'a and He loves human beings: this love is always mutual, not unilateral." (1)

Love (prema) is not unilateral or one-sided. When the bhakta loves Parama Purusa, then already Parama Purusa is loving the bhakta. Love for the Supreme is always mutual or bilateral and never exists in isolation. The inner equation is that because Parama Purusa loves the bhakta so much, that is why the bhakta also loves Parama Purusa. Divine love or prema is always mutual - not unilateral.

Here we should remember that prema means divine love - not attachment (ka’ma) for worldly things etc. And it is specifically in this intimate relation between bhakta and Parama Purusa where love is always mutual, and never one-sided.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Your meeting with God is not a unilateral affair, it is a mutual thing." (2)

The answer to any problem

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “A correct spiritual ideology is the only solution to the problems confronting the world. From this perspective we can call Ananda Marga ideology the philosophers' stone. Just as the philosophers' stone is meant to transform everything into gold, Ananda Marga ideology can, most definitely, find a just and rational solution whenever it is applied to any problem.” (1)

About future babes

Prout philosophy states, “With the advent of biological babes, Prakrti will snatch away the reproductive power of human beings and hence they will not be able to reproduce. Instead, they will simply create more laboratory babes. Biological babes will not have much attachment, though they will be subject to pleasure and pain. They will not be required to undergo much physical struggle because through scientific inventions a tablet may be sufficient to sustain them for days together. They will be bereft of family ties, as laboratory babes will be produced in laboratories from chemical compounds. They will gradually develop a tendency of aversion to worldly enjoyment. It is not difficult to envisage a day when laboratory babes may think that nature has lost all its charm, that life is not worth living, and that there is even no use in eating. It is better we do not think further on this. However, it should not be lost sight of that laboratory babes will be great sádhakas or spiritual aspirants, as they will be more conscious of their imperfections. Hence, the more leisure time they have the more sádhaná they will do.”
