Consoling grieving family + 4 more

Baba
Consoling grieving family

Namaskar,

This letter addresses – in a universal manner – key points for helping those grieving or suffering the loss of any kind. Here we shall review Baba’s teachings on this important matter and understand our Ananda Marga perspective.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

List of dos & don'ts

First is a brief review of techniques to properly serve those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Here is a summary listing of the main points:
  • The greatest harm a person can do under these circumstances is to disregard the grieving family. There is no excuse for never going over to their house or meeting place to console them. Such apathy is unconscionable. One should show up. That in itself is a sign of support. Not going means not caring. So it is important to arrive on-site and stay for some time. If you are very close to the grieving family you may stay with them a few days; if you are less close then you may stay an hour or two. The main thing is to recognise their loss by being present, for at least a little while.
  • Upon arrival if you see that the mourning family is crying, first simply sit down, and, if socially appropriate, place a comforting hand on their shoulder, otherwise your presence alone is enough.
  • Allow them to cry; never tell them ‘not to cry’.
  • Gently try to divert their mind away from their loss.
  • Do not talk about or praise the deceased and do not give a philosophical sermon on how one day we all die and that this world is ephemeral.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Don’t allow crying visitors near

This is the worst time to speak about the deceased because it multiplies the pain of their loss.
  • Do offer water or other sentient beverages – in a very psychological way – to the family members of the deceased to divert their mind and break the cycle of their grief.
  • Be sure to remain with the grieving family members; do not leave them alone. They need support and your company.
  • Do maintain mental stability in the presence of those in mourning; don’t allow emotional, grief-stricken visitors to burst out in tears near the grieving family.
  • If anyone coming to console the bereaved family is crying, they should be stopped at the door and not allowed near the family. Only when that visitor stops crying should they be allowed to enter.
  • At an appropriate moment, when their grieving has subsided, try to divert everyone’s attention towards collective spiritual practice. Slowly start to sing Prabhat Samgiita and kiirtan, and conduct a dharmacakra including a Baba story. This is all to be done at the residence or place where the grieving family is mourning.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

At the time of cremation

In due course, the body of the deceased should be brought to the cremation grounds. In Ananda Marga, the system is to carry the body silently; one should not talk or raise the slogan while carrying the body for cremation. Upon arrival at the site, bhajans, kiirtan, and collective ishvara pranidhana should be done; then the actual cremation can be performed. Those are Baba’s guidelines from the chapter, Disposal of the Dead Body, in Caryacarya part 1.

Special Note: When doing spiritual practices like kiirtana, sadhana, and guru puja, one must not focus on the dead body. The deceased must not be placed front and center and become the focal point during those spiritual duties.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

It is also important to remember that during the cremation people tend to (a) speak about the glory of the deceased, (b) tell the grieving family members not to cry, and (3) give philosophical reasoning or lectures about the nature of this ephemeral world. All three of these things should be strictly avoided. Baba guides us that we should not behave in this way on the occasion of the cremation because it will intensify and exacerbate the suffering of those mourners.

Specifically, regarding those who are crying, we can hold them as a sign of our emotional support; but, we should not tell them not to cry.

Remember, regardless of how difficult and sad the situation is, collective bhajan, kiirtan, and sadhana is the only way to approach this whole issue in a very psychological way. Doing dharmacakra will help calm and soothe everyone’s mind and bring comfort to those in mourning.

Dogma: putting fire in the mouth

In India, it is common to place the fire in the mouth of the dead body. Those who work at the burning grounds often do this. So be careful about this as this is not a respectful approach. It is important to educate those who will be burning the body.

Caryacarya states, “As the practice of putting fire into the mouth of the dead body is repulsive, it should not be encouraged.” (1)

Those in Tibet often chop the body into pieces and then grind it up and leave it in the wild for the animals to eat. This is also a disrespectful and grotesque approach.

Best is for the body to be burned in a sentient and respectful manner according to our Ananda Marga system.

After the actual cremation, announce when the shraddha ceremony will be held. It can be done the very next day or anytime within the allotted 12-day period according to Caryacarya.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Very common mistakes

It is very common around the globe for people to talk about the greatness of the deceased when speaking with the grieving family. People naively think that this is the proper thing to do.

Yet, Baba guides us that this is the worst approach to take as it intensifies the suffering of those mourners. Already they are in woe due to the loss of their loved one, and by speaking about the deceased’s special qualities and attributions, the family is further reminded of the severity of their loss. It makes them feel even more pained. Indeed, if they had stopped crying but are then again reminded of the merits of their loved one, those in mourning will begin sobbing all over again. The entire cycle of tears and misery will be repeated.

So this approach of praising the deceased in front of the family at this particular time is not appropriate, according to Baba. Yet this is what we see happening time and time again. A friend or family member arrives from afar and they glorify the deceased and the fragile mental state of the mourners is set back into a whirlpool of misery.

Conclusion

The approach of Ananda Marga is completely different from the accepted customs; our approach is unique. Baba guides us to psychologically and lovingly divert the person’s mind from the pain of their loss to the thought of the Supreme. This is the only remedy.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

As disciples of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, we should follow His order; He is the Sadguru. By adhering to His direction and guideline, we will best be able to relieve others of their suffering, by His grace.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Madhumay Deva

Teaching Baba’s above guidelines to the grieving family at the time of death is not appropriate. This has to be done ahead of time. That is when people can learn and understand what to do as they are in a balanced state of mind. Then, when tragedy strikes, those in mourning and those consoling the mourners will act in the right way - according to Guru’s teachings. In contrast, if at the time of death, some try to guide others and protest local rituals and norms etc when everyone is grief stricken, that often does more harm than good - and makes the entire atmosphere negative. That is why the only solution is to educate people ahead of time about Baba’s teachings about consoling the grieving party; this should not be done at the moment when a loved one dies and everyone is in a state of grief.

~ In-depth study ~

Sadguru Baba’s teachings explained in the above letter are very appropriate to use in the case of the death of loved ones, as well as in tragedies wherein so many are suffering as their loved ones died. In those times, one should know how to psychically help those in grief. This letter leads in that direction. So this letter is equally relevant for both family life and social life etc. Those who wish to serve in this way should communicate with local funeral homes and help the bereaved family.

English title is wrong in Caryacarya

Unfortunately someone mistranslated chapter 31 of the English edition of Caryacarya part 1. They titled it as “Disposal of the Dead Body.” But this is wrong and inappropriate. In the Hindi and Bengali editions, that chapter is titled as Shava Satka’r, meaning ‘reverence for the lifeless body.’ This projects an air of respect and sanctity. But those publishers failed to give it a comparatively respectful title in English. Instead they called it “Disposal of the Dead Body”, as if one is just getting rid of some trash, rubbish, or garbage etc. Steps should be taken to properly title chapter 31 of the English edition of Caryacarya part 1.

Rushing towards You

"Somya sha'nta cetana'nanda, caran'aa'rabinu da'o go a'ma'y... " (Prabhat Samgiita #0327)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa You are Shánta, the ever-tranquil One - the personification of pure consciousness, ever blissful. Please bless me by allowing me to remain at Your lotus feet. Divine Entity, You are the very hope of those who are sad and hopeless, the soothing balm of love to an afflicted heart, and the final shelter for the shelterless. Supreme Being, my singular desire is to surrender unto You. Baba, please allow me to remain at Your lotus feet - always.

My Illumined One, You exist in all realms from beginningless to endlessness. And You go on saturating my whole existence with a perennial inspiration like the Phalgu dhara (river). Your boundless grace flows endlessly simultaneously in all ten directions - north, south, east, west, up, down etc. Your karuńá is filled everywhere. You are the most cherished and most loving One - the most adorable One - who is beyond the reach of all human intellect and erudition.

Baba, my being is bound by the three relative factors: time, space, and person; my origin is within the boundary of this material world, in this creation. I cannot think of any entity which is beyond these three relative factors. If my mind goes beyond them, it loses its existence. So I cannot know You, as You are outside and across the boundary of this created world, which is within the realm of relativity. Baba, with Your blessing when I meditate, my mind goes beyond the boundaries and merges in You. The inner jewel of my unit self is like the aroma of the pollen of the ketakii flower. My “I-feeling”, my whole existence, is pinpointed and rushing towards You.

Baba, I only wish to lay prostrate unto You, always….

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #0327:

[1] Shanta: Ananda Marga ideology says, “In every place one has both friends and foes. When one fights against external enemies and brings them under one’s control, it is called an act of “shamanam”. One who has the quality of shamanam is called “shánta”. Sham + anat́ = shamana. Sham + kta = shánta, which means “a person who has achieved control over the external world.” Similarly, dam + anat́ = damana. Damana is the state of achieving control over the internal enemies or the depraving or debasing propensities or activities. Dam + kta = dánta, which means “one who has control over the internal enemies.” According to Indian mythology, the duty of the God of Death or Yama (Pluto) is to keep the world’s population to a limited number. Thus, he is also called “Shamana”. “Namah Shiváya Shántáya”. One who establishes control over each and every entity is called “Shánta”. So the virtuous people, the spiritual aspirants, will have to attain control over their debasing propensities.” (1)

[2] Phalgu Dhara: The water in the Phalgu river runs continuously, but in the summer or dry season one must dig down through the sand to see that the water is running - otherwise it looks like it is dry. Similarly, the life of the sadhaka is full of ups and downs. It is not blissful all the 24hrs. Sometimes one’s mind goes down and the heart feels dry. But if one digs deeper they will see that Parama Purusa is supplying an eternal flow of inspiration. That is why in the song the sadhaka uses the metaphor of the Phalgu river. To show that Parama Purusa is supplying perennial cosmic inspiration to humans always, whether they realise it or not, just like with the Phalgu Dha’ra’.

[3] Karun'a': In the second stanza, the term karuna has been used. This is when one harbours a deep sense of empathy, is pained by another's suffering, and feels, "I should help them.” For example, suppose a beggar is wallowing in misery. By seeing his wretched condition, you felt, "I should help him and remove his agony.” This heartfelt feeling is the expression of karuna'.

Similarly, suppose a bhakta is suffering and unable to progress in the physical, psychic, or spiritual realms for any reason. In such circumstances, Parama Purusa cannot bear to watch that sadhaka suffer. He feels He must rescue them immediately. With His deep empathy and mercy, Parama Purusa removes their agony, so that once again that bhakta can progress in all realms of life. This entire liila is called His karun'a'.

Difference Between krpa' & karun'a'

In the case of karun'a', Parama Purusa is moved by a bhakta's suffering and comes forward to save that bhakta. Whereas with krpa' (grace), the bhakta is not suffering but even then Parama Purusa is bestowing His blessing.

It is just like if a beggar is sick and suffering half-naked in the freezing cold. If with great empathy a passerby selflessly helps that beggar without expecting anything in return, that is karuna’. Because the passerby is moved and motivated into action by seeing the beggar's suffering. In contrast, if a student is not sick, and that person just wishes to give the student a gift, then that is krpa’.

When out of empathy Parama Purusa lovingly comes to the aid of the suffering bhakta to relieve them of their spiritual strife, that is the karuna of Parama Purusa; and, if that same bhakta is not suffering in the spiritual realm, yet Baba still bestows His blessing to enhance their bhakti, that is His krpa’ on the bhakta.

Only sastuanga pranam to Him

Ananda Marga philosophy says: "...Trtiiyam' Gurupu'janam."

The third point of success is 'reverence to Guru'.

Our Guru is Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, and as His disciples we hold great reverence towards Him. That's why we don't shake hands with or do just simple namaskar to Guru. Nor do we do pranam to Him by touching the feet.

Disciples always give maximum reverence by doing sastaunga pranam. Sastaunga pranam is only for Guru, and Guru alone. No one else. Such is the greatness of Guru - He is unparalleled.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The one formless, beginningless and infinite Parama Brahma (Supreme Consciousness) is the only entity to be attained by living beings-- That alone is Jagat Guru (the Supreme preceptor), That alone has revealed Brahmavidya (intuitional science) to us through the medium of the name and form of Anandamurtijii. Unit beings must be made to appreciate Its majesty." (Caryacarya - II, Sadhana, pt# 1a)

And in Ananda Sutram, Baba has given:

"Brahmaeva gururekah na'parah" (2)

That means, Guru is Brahma. He is everything.

Tragic tale of Queen Elizabeth

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "England’s Henry the Eighth was an unruly king. Once he came to Paris with the queen. In Paris many kinds of covetable drinks were available, thus when they were in Paris his desire for drink naturally increased. One day, while under the influence of liquor, he beat the queen so mercilessly that one of her legs became practically crippled. For several days she was obliged to drag it behind her as she walked. When the time came they returned to London (In those days they did not call it London but rather Londre in the aristocratic French language). The residents of the city fell head over heels in the nooks and crannies of the royal residence trying to see whether or not the king and queen had brought back any new fashions from Paris. They saw [Queen] Elizabeth dragging her leg and thought perhaps that this kind of walk was some kind of ultra-modern French style. Women have one great quality; they can easily imitate others. Thus it happened that within three to four days most of the women in the aristocratic households were dragging their leg behind them when they walked and taking a lot of pride in it. It is not written in the histories whether they ever discovered what the real story was behind the queen dragging her leg when she walked. Elizabeth’s style of walking while dragging her leg was called the “Elizabethan gait”." (1)

Sadhana: How to request God

Here following is an English summary or gist of the below Hindi teaching:

The first stage is getting over the small 'I'. After getting above the small 'I' to some extent, in the second stage, humans should fight against their mental defects. For example, if one is afflicted by some kind of superiority complex, or inferiority complex, one has to combat that.  Some may be afflicted with attachment (moha). So, all these mental defects one is to fight against in the second stage. Humans may possess some will power to fight against these defects but that alone is not enough. One needs to constantly make endeavor to overcome the mental defects. This requires additional strength or power. This power comes from Parama Purusa's grace alone. Sa'dhana' does not provide us with anything. All Sa'dhana' does is facilitate the grace of Parama Purusa. So, one is to ask for the power to fight against his/her mental defects from Parama Purusa. One should earnestly say, "Parama Purusa, I would like to march towards You but I do not have strength in my knees. Please provide me energy and I'll walk towards You.”

Re: Is samaj groupism

Namaskar,

Maybe it can be conveyed that samaj socio economic units can be analogous to cells in the human body  All cells work with one another to make healthy all organs to function properly in a healthy human body. Also if in a human family one single member loses their way and is not disciplined, that family as a whole is weakened and its very existence is threatened. So all remaining family members must run to the aid and rectification of that undisciplined  family member. Similarly samaj socio economic units must work together in dynamic harmony for one healthy spiritually progressive world....and in the distant future our world can eventually contribute to the dynamism and spiritual advancement of The Universe...A Great Universe.

Diagnosing mental health

Baba
Diagnosing mental health

Namaskar,

In this present era, we are step-by-step witnessing the spread of various mental disorders etc. This outbreak is most drastic in our so-called first-world nations.

Around the globe, and especially in the materialistic communities, many medical professionals and psychologists are under the impression that all such disorders fall within the realm of brain diseases. Whether one has brain cancer or clinical depression, western medical specialists are treating all mental disorders as brain diseases, using traditional allopathic medicines.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Brain diseases & mental diseases are not the same

In Ananda Marga, however, our approach is different. Baba clearly guides us that within the realm of so-called “mental disorders” there are both (a) brain diseases and (b) psychic diseases. Yet these two problems are worlds apart. According to Baba, brain diseases and psychic diseases are not of the same nature.

Ananda Marga philosophy teaches us, "Psychic disease and brain disease are not the same thing; they are quite different." (1)

So in His above teaching Baba is clearly differentiating between brain disease and psychic disease. And here below Baba explains how they are different.

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "Brain disease occurs due to some disorder in a part of the brain, or due to a congenital defect, or perhaps due to hereditary causes which hamper the proper formation of the brain. Mental disease is different. It arises due to a disorder in the objectivated mind." (2)

As per Baba's aforementioned teaching, brain disease means a physical disorder or biological defect in the brain such that the brain is unable to function properly. Some examples of brain disease are strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease, brain cancer, metabolic brain diseases, autism, brain tumors, brain trauma etc. These all come within the scope of brain diseases.

In contrast, psychic diseases comes from a "disorder in the objectivated mind", or defective style of thinking, such as depression, mania, phobia, inferiority complex, hallucination, so called being 'possessed' by certain deities, superiority complex, fear complex, melancholia, schizophrenia, maha'many'ta' (superiority complex) melancholia etc. These are all due to a defective way of thinking.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So by these above examples it is evident that brain diseases and psychic diseases are two clearly different categories. Already it has been explained that brain diseases result from a structural defect or biological problem in the physical brain organ. Whereas mental diseases or psychic disease occur in the mind due to a defective style of thinking. So the root cause of a psychic disease is a defective way of thinking. And if this defective style of thinking persists over time, the brain chemistry is altered. In that state, that initial psychic disease has become both a brain disease and a psychic disease. This happens with long-term cases of depression, inferiority complex, and the psychic disease of hatred etc. But in all these cases, the trigger point was the mind. That is why doctors should provide both types of medicines to treat those patients: medicine for the brain and psychic medicine which is meditation.

You know the brain is a physical organ whereas the mind is not something physical. It is abstract. You can neither see it nor touch it. You can only feel it. Here below we will discuss more how psychic diseases develop.

Simple analogy: How your mind thinks & sees

In the mind, there are two chambers: The objectivated mind and the subjectivated mind. Now, suppose in real life you saw a cat walking in the grass. And then you closed your eyes and you recollected that cat. In that case, one part of the mind creates the image of the cat and another portion of the mind sees that image. So the part of the mind that took the shape of the cat is the objectivated mind, and the part of the mind that is watching that cat is the subjectivated mind.

Everyone has an objectivated mind: It is that chamber or part of the mind which contains one's object of thinking. So the first step is to look at how the objectivated mind works. If someone is thinking about the post office then the post office is in their objectivated mind. And if a frog is thinking about a mosquito then a mosquito is in its objectivated mind. So anyone's object of thinking is what comprises their objectivated mind.

This objectivated mind functions in two ways. Suppose your eyes are open and you see a cat in front of you. Then when you close your eyes and see the cat in your mind, then the picture of the cat in your mental sphere is your objectivated mind. The second way the objectivated mind works is as follows. Let's say you start imagining something that does not exist - like a ghost. That ghost has no basis in reality. In truth, it does not exist. Yet you start thinking that there is a spider monster in the room which has big fangs and twisted feet, and lives in the dark. This is completely imaginary, but when you start thinking of that spider monster then it takes shape in your objectivated mind. And your subjectivated mind is watching that fictitious image of the ghost.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Let’s take it a step further. Suppose you are awake and thinking that there is a spider monster in a dark room then in that awakened state you will rationalise with the help of your conscious mind that it is just a fleeting thought and you will not take it seriously. And you will not be terrified. But if that same thought occurs when you are “sleeping” then at that point the conscious mind is sleeping so without the help of your conscious mind you will think that it is real. You will see the fangs of the spider monster coming towards you. and you will be terrified. That is called a nightmare. The thought which was not so serious in the daytime due to the awakened stage of your conscious mind becomes deadly at night when you are dreaming, because the conscious mind is inactive or “sleeping.”

How mental 'ghost' becomes real 'ghost'

If you are thinking about a ghost in broad daylight when your conscious mind is active, then you will conclude this is just your imagination. Because your conscious mind is active, so you will not be terrified. But in that same awakened stage, if your thinking is strong due to the repeated thought, “There is a ghost, there is a ghost, there is a ghost, there is a ghost, there is a ghost, there is a ghost,” then due to fear, your conscious mind will be stunned and stop functioning. Then that mental ghost will become a real ghost for you. And you will see that with your eyes open. That ghost could order you to do something, and you might end up committing a heinous act. For example, if that ghost orders you to beat your spouse then you will do that. So those diseased people who say they have seen a fake ghost are not liars. They are telling the truth. Because of the repetition of that defective thought, their conscious mind became stunned, and they started visualizing that ghost in broad daylight. Sadly, this is a very serious psychic disease, like schizophrenia. That can also be treated by both brain medicines and sadhana. Just doing one form of treatment is not enough.

Conclusion

How to keep the mind free from psychic disease

For the situation to be remedied, allopathic medical science has to accept the existence of mind and then treat ailments related with the objectivated mind as psychic diseases - not brain diseases. Baba guides us that sadhana alone is the proper treatment for psychic diseases.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru Baba says, "Most psychic diseases, if not all, grow out of the defective control over the objectivated mind. If one is alert, any trouble can be avoided. Those who regularly practise Iishvara pran'idha'na or dhya'na (meditation) can remain free from these diseases, as their minds will remain in a balanced state. One of the numerous benefits of sa'dhana' is that it keeps the mind free from psychic disease and encourages the natural growth of the mind." (3)

Namaskar,
In His Service,
Shriideva

By ideating on Him we can overcome all defects and become pure and pristine - physically, psychically, and spiritually.

Ananda Marga ideology teaches us, "In Brahma, the Entity who liberates one from all mundane ailments and the cycle of rebirth, lies the total cessation of all afflictions, the freedom from all ailments. He is the only dependable panacea for microcosmic distortions and imperfections; there is none other than Him - Na'nyah pantha' vidyate ayana'ya." (4)

~ In-depth study ~

Cure: role of psychologists & sociologists

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Psychologists cannot treat the mental diseases which inflict born criminals all alone; the cooperation of physicians and sociologists is essential. Psychologists will diagnose the mental disease and explain its origins, and they will also play a role in helping cure it as far as possible.”
“Doctors will be responsible for curing the disease through medicine or surgery, insofar as it is caused by physiological abnormalities. Then sociologists will have to arrange for the social rehabilitation of the criminal after he or she has recovered. If psychologists only describe the nature of the disease, or if doctors only diagnose the physiological disorders and nothing more, it will not be possible to accomplish anything productive.” (5)

Both types needed - permanent cure

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “A disease can be mental or can be physical. Similarly, medicine may be mental or may be physical; hence it is most desirable and productive if both kinds of medicine are administered simultaneously in all diseases, whether they are physical or mental. Those who only believe in psychological treatment for mental disease know from experience that such treatment will not permanently cure the disease and the patient will soon relapse. Only where, along with psychological treatment, guidance concerning diet, bathing and behaviour is given, and to normalize the diseased glands of the body medicines prepared from the five fundamental factors are prescribed, can the disease be permanently cured.” (6)

Ego is really a mental ailment

Ananda Marga ideology states, “After having analysed the various types of ahaḿkára and their evil effects, we need to examine the ways and means of getting rid of these defects. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has offered a psychological method to save oneself from the malady of ahaḿkára. Ahaḿkára is really a mental ailment, and a person suffering from this disease requires psychological treatment.” (7)

Cure epilepsy

Ananda Marga philosophy, “Epilepsy arises when a person comes in sudden contact with something or some event completely outside the realm of his or her experience. Through proper counselling, attacks of this disease can be checked and through psychic treatment along with the use of small amounts of medicine the disease can be treated.” (8)

How exorcists expel “ghosts”

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Knowing full well that a person who is possessed by a ghost is suffering from a mental disease and a disease of the nervous system, exorcists generally beat a "possessed" person to reactivate his or her nerves, make him or her inhale the smoke of burnt chillies in order to return him or her to consciousness.” (9)

Hide & seek

"Nabiina pra'te ei arun' a'lote..." (Prabhat Samgiita #0019)

Purport:

Baba, with the arrival of the new crimson dawn, You have illumined Yourself in the depths of my mind with the rhythm of forms.

You know how to make us laugh and weep, and how to play hide-and-seek. You filled my life with Your radiant light.

You know how to play the lyre, weave endless melodies, and make the world dance in Your tune and song. You know how to love the world with all its pains and pleasures.

You are so gracious; You are the most loving One...

Value of AMPS ancestry

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “With the noise of a bustling wind, people reminisce, “Oh, my grandfather accomplished this great feat… my aunt performed that marvellous work… our surname is Roychoudhury. For we were once great landlords…” Thus people always ruminate over their past and gloat over their ancestors, because they have no glorious present at all – everything is an empty void. When a community thus loses its inner wealth, then it tenaciously clings to the skeleton of its past and says, “I was this, I was that.” But they are unable to say, “I am this, I am that.” ... One must say, “Do not bother about what your ancestors have done. Why can’t you do...”” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Táttvika, ácárya, purodhá and such terms represent one’s individual ability and are not hereditary.” (2)

Note: In His above teachings, Sadguru Baba is guiding us that in our AM way of life there is no scope to stand on the coattails of one’s ancestors. Doing nothing in the present moment and gloating about past glories is not our way. Moreover, in AMPS we do not hand the post from one generation to the next on a hereditary basis. So if one’s father was a family acarya, that same title, post, glory, and respect is not automatically bestowed upon the son or daughter. In our Ananda Marga, everything is earned based on one’s conduct, not one’s birth.

The various dogmatic religions and racist approaches pass down their titles and supremacy from one generation to the next. Verily, they use the inherently exploitative tactic of one’s birth to suppress and denigrate others. This occurs with so-called whites exploiting so-called blacks, and so-called brahmins exploiting so-called shudras. Casteism and racism are based on this horrific edict ordained by sub-humans.

Beware of new dogma: AMPS India

Sadly, now this same disease is rearing its ugly head in our AMPS. A few are claiming that, “Since my uncle / great-grandfather / father was a family acarya, then I am of a special birth and fit to rule over AMPS.” And others say, “My family has been in AMPS for generations, and both my grandfather and my father were family acaryas etc, so on that basis I should also be granted a great seat in AMPS.” They think AMPS belongs to them due to their ancestry, and everyone else is a guest. Even though they themselves have not done anything in this life, they feel being the grandson of a family acarya is enough for all of AMPS to fall at their feet. This type of senseless, empty banter is crowding the airwaves on some forums.

Those who are true Ananda Margiis understand well that in our AM way of life, no positions of power are granted on a hereditary basis. All are the sweet children of Parama Purusa, and one is only able to lead our AM society by their sadhana, service, sacrifice, and dharmic conduct.

In Him,
Harideva

Crystal-clear notion of mission

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Human life is a mission; life itself is a mission; one’s very existence is a mission. A’tmamoks’a'rtham’ jagaddhita’ya ca: ‘Whatever one is to do, one is to do for a’tmamoks’a– for their own liberation– and for the elevation of the entire world, elevation of the entire human society’. One is to do both of these things; that is, these two things are one’s mission.” (1)

Note: By Baba’s above teaching it is clear that the AMPS organisation is not the mission. But for certain reasons, some try to misguide or take advantage of the margiis by making them think that AMPS is the mission. But that is not correct. In His above guideline, Sadguru Baba explicitly tells us what is the mission.

Key tip for pracara

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "Even in private life when a person behaves with you badly or uses harsh words, don't behave with him in the same manner. You shall explain to him his duties gently. In case, anyone has a wrong impression, you shall show him the right path without scolding (abusing) him. Make it clear to him if possible with practical demonstration how harmful may be the effect of such habits. But always keep this in mind that in such cases your behavior must be like that of a friend, and never like that of an instructor. Your only object will be to get your advice accepted by him. The idea that he is fool and you are wise is not desirable in any party." (1)

Note: In His above teaching Baba is outlining an important pracar technique. Specifically, when speaking with non-margiis, we should talk with them in a soft and gentle manner, using a friendly, supportive tone. By this way they will gradually learn Ananda Marga ideals. Baba also addressed non-margiis in this manner. And then with more established sadhakas - i.e. experience Ananda Margiis - Baba was more firm to best enhance their progress.

Find out what is needed to make a flower garland

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Not only the gods are fond of the fragrance of flowers; devotees also want to string garlands for their beloved Iśt́a with the fragrant flowers of the devotion of their hearts. If a flower has no fragrance, it has no value for a devotee. One should remember that the fragrance of a flower and the tender sweetness of a devotional heart together make a perfect combination. What does the perfume of the flower represent? The worldly activity which a devotee does with a heart filled with love is the perfume of the flower, and the overflowing devotion for one's Iśt́a is the tender sweetness in the devotee's heart. With these two together, the devotee makes a garland. Now, if there are fragrant flowers, but there is no sweetness in the devotee's heart, then the devotee cannot make a garland for his or her Iśt́a – then there is no question of garlanding Him at all, and though the flower basket may be full of flowers, they wither with the pain of emptiness and the agony of unfulfilled yearning. Then if the Beloved does not accept the garland, what is the use of holding the basket full of flowers." (1)

Analogy of string instrument and human life

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The common people, let alone the master artists, know that sound is not emitted if the strings are loosened too much and the soft and delicate strings snap if they are tightened too much. Human life is also like this. If one practises too much austerity (in some cases, if one makes a parade of austerity), tender human sensitivities snap and break into smithereens’ the soft, delicate parts of the mind get charred and petrified. On the other hand, if life is made akin to a loose string, the nobler yearnings of life will never be fulfilled. In other words, that kind of life degenerates into the life of an animal characterized only by bathing, eating and sleeping. Hence one must never allow the string of life to be loose. But also the string of life should not be left to snap due to excessive strain. The ideal course of life is neither left-oriented nor right-oriented. This kind of life will be conspicuous by the absence of strife, mayhem or horror of the leftists and of toleration of injustices by the rightists in their loose, careless and sloppy life. It is this ideal course that will usher in a life worth yearning for a super-human existence, divinely exquisite and shining brightly on the banner of gold.” (1)
