Euthanasia in AM

Euthanasia in AM

Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

In select states within the US, some European nations, and other regions around the globe, euthanasia is allowed. It is a growing phenomenon. People turn to assisted suicide or euthanasia when they feel their current condition is unbearable. They think that the pain, suffering, or humiliation is too much to bear and that the only viable solution is to kill oneself. They harbour the dogma that upon prematurely ending their life their suffering will be over and they will find eternal peace. But that act of assisted suicide actually multiplies the problem and one incurs more negative samskaras and suffering.

Defective mindset: Trying to escape suffering by euthanasia

These days if someone is suffering from a terminal illness, and they are suffering a lot, then some materialistic people think that, “If I die, then I can escape from suffering.” But this is a defective mindset. Because they do not realise that it is the mind that suffers - not the body. And after the assisted suicide while the body remains here on this earth in a lifeless condition, the mind moves on and carries the current load of samsarkas that will take expression in future lives. So theirs is a defective mindset to think they have escaped all suffering by annihilating themselves through euthanasia.

The mind was suffering - not the body

When they look at the mindless body it is still and quiet. So they wrongly conclude that the person has found peace. But that is just their irrational outlook to think that that deceased person is now at peace. The reality is something far, far different.

That dead body no longer has a mind associated with it. And it was the mind which was suffering - not the body. That is why the body is now calm and quiet - because it is lifeless and the mind has exited that body. The disembodied mind has moved on to the next stage. And when that mind again takes birth in a physical body it will experience the reactions of its past actions and suffer more. After rebirth and taking form, as an animal, bug, or inanimate object etc, that mind will now have more negative samskaras to face because of the harm they inflicted on their own body. So the deceased does not gain any semblance of peace or eternal peace through the choice of assisted suicide. Rather it multiplies the pain and suffering for its next life.

How onlookers get confused

Onlookers superficially see the lifeless body and wrongly think that indeed that person is no longer suffering. Because earlier that person was crying and wailing in pain and agony and now the deceased bodys is quiet. One should understand that before death both body and mind were together. And after death only the body remains. The mind has left the body and it was that very mind that was suffering. Remember, previously the body was not suffering; it was the mind within the body that was suffering. And after death the situation is the same: The body still is not suffering while the mind has all the samskaras of suffering. In its bodiless state the mind will not suffer, but whenever in the future that mind gets a physical body it will undergod the leftover samskaras which it could not exhaust in the previous life. Having left the body the mind is now seeking a new home (i.e. body) to exhaust those samsakras. So the only difference is that the mind is no longer associated with that body. But mourners and onlookers see the lifeless corpse and think that now there is no pain and the person reached safely to heaven. They wrongly view euthanasia as a win-win situation. The patient is relieved, or they escaped from excruciating pain and reached happily to heaven, and the family members are relieved from seeing the suffering.

Net result of euthanasia is very degrading

Here is a brief overview:
  • (a) the body does not suffer; the mind suffers;
  • (b) after death the body remains as is, but the mind is not there;
  • (c) people wrongly conclude that the suffering has ended at the time of death;
  • (d) after death the mind leaves the body and it is seeking another body to undergo its leftover suffering;
  • (e) the sinful act of euthanasia abruptly terminated the opportunity to experience one’s samskaras;
  • (e) prakrti will provide the deceased with an animal body, or worse, to undergo the leftover suffering plus more suffering that was created due to self-annihilation;
  • (f) the mind was suffering before death, and when the mind takes rebirth it will undergo that degree of suffering plus more;
  • (g) the net result of euthanasia is very negative.
Thus those who resort to euthanasia are blind to think that peace awaits them after their death. Rather in their next life, when they get a new physical structure, they will have to meet their fate and suffer for their bad action of killing oneself.

Committing suicide = incurring more negative samskara

In the end we can say that euthanasia is a double or triple wrong. With human life one can exhaust their samskaras very quickly but when one destroys their human body the exhaustion of samskaras becomes prolonged. They will undergo their premature physical death, incur more negative samskaras for destroying themselves, and then have to wait for rebirth as an animal. Finally, in animal life they will begin the slow, multi-layered process of undergoing all those negative samskaras - both old and new. Thus it may take a long time - millions of years - to exhaust those samskaras which otherwise could have been finished in just a few days time had they kept their human body and not destroyed it via euthanasia.

With human body one can exhaust their samskara very fast, unlike with an animal body.

One’s samskaras can only be exhausted while alive and one should use the physical body on this earth in order to finish all one’s past unexpressed samskaras. After death, the mind cannot function without the brain. After death, there is not any difference between a disembodied mind of an animal, plant, bug, or human. It is just a mind along with its unexpressed samskaras awaiting rebirth. And that person who committed assisted suicide may be reborn as an animal, plant, or bug etc, but not as a human.

Conclusion

If a person ends their life intentionally, i.e. euthanasia or assisted suicide, then that creates yet another bad samskara. Because they will face that negative samskara of deliberately destroying their body. Since one can't exhaust their unexpressed samskaras after death, they will have to take rebirth and undergo the reaction. In that case, they will face their newly created samskara of murder by assisted suicide - along with their other samskaras. So they will not get a human body anytime soon.

All in all, it is just like if you bought a special, exotic, top-notch toy for your child and the child destroyed the toy within 5 minutes and threw it in the garbage. In that case, you will not be tempted to purchase another toy for the child right away. Those who commit assisted suicide do not get a human body again easily. They are last in queue - they will have to wait millions of years. Nature gives this punishment. The final conclusion is that assisted suicide creates more sin.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Mrtyuinjay

Plunge deeper on the path of negative pratisaincara

If someone commits suicide, that is very negative. Ultimately that person has killed themselves. And just as killing others is sinful, killing oneself is more sinful. Indeed if someone kills another person, they a commit serious sin. But if someone kills themselves, that generates an even greater amount of sin because God has given you the physical body, and with your own free will you destroyed it. So as punishment, you will not get another human body easily in the future. It is just life you give a small child a children’s book to read. And before your eyes, that child destroys that book and throws it away in the garbage. Then you may not be tempted to immediately give another book to the child because they misused it. In a similar way, the person who committed suicide will have to undergo millions of lives as an animal before again getting a human body. So suicide and assisted suicide pushes on far back along the path of negative pratisaincara.

His grace, not assisted suicide, relieves all suffering

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The reaping of consequences of original actions performed by a human being occurs mainly in the psychic sphere. And if a person attains the blessings of evolved beings and the Cosmic grace in that same psychic sphere, the problem is solved. Pain and misery is bound to come. Depending upon one's inborn sam'ska'ras and the actions performed, tortures and afflictions are bound to be undergone - the expression of one's own samskara [reactive momenta]. Tortures and afflictions will not be as severely painful as before; with the blessing and grace, the psychic afflictions will be removed. Well, when there is pain and the pain is not felt as such, should it then be called pain? In this case, in the psychic sphere, one will remain in a state of bliss. Let the afflictions come. When the affliction and pain are not felt as such, one should not worry about it." (1)

Thus the only way to permanently relieve oneself of any suffering is not to run after worldly allurements but rather get His divine grace. Just a tiny portion of His grace is enough to free the mind of any suffering. Then one will just be in a state of peace - bliss. That is Baba's above guideline.

By sadhana eliminate all sin even on deathbed

When the body is debilitated then feelings of helplessness arise, and that brings feelings of surrender – the highest calling in life. Thus this time of life should be used for spiritual growth and not wasted.

Another important aspect is that one cannot do sadhana without a physical body. Baba has said many times that even microvita [devayonis] must get human framework if they wish to gain salvation.

Sadhana only needs the feeling of "I am", "I exist", and "I do" and then one can practice meditation. When on one’s natural deathbed (not that of suicide), then feelings of surrender arise, and all sins get destroyed, by His grace.

But all these opportunities are lost when one resorts to euthanasia - rather one incurs more sin and negative samskaras.

“Please grace me and give me strength to face suffering”

Part of our spiritual approach in life is to ask Baba, “Please grace me and give me strength to face any and all suffering and setbacks in life.” Especially in dark periods of life or when sick, one should take this ideation.

One should always remember that a person can become one with Parama Purusa with the right ideation – it takes just a moment. Proof of this is the terrible robber Valmiki who in the course of a few moments expressed his repentance with great sincerity and thereafter became known as a great saint.

One should not give way to feelings of nihilism (i.e. this world is misery). This is not appreciated by Ananda Marga. We do not agree with Buddha’s teaching. One must not fall prey to feelings of misery and plunge into the sin of assisted suicide. Instead one should cross the ocean of maya and reach unto Parama Purusa.

As long as one is able to think, one can ideate on Him. No matter how grave one’s problems one can always cry for the Lord. One should always cultivate the feeling, "Parama Purusa is mine. I am not lowly or worthless. I am His and He is mine."

All of the above speaks to the importance of keeping one’s physical body as a precious vehicle for manifesting one’s spiritual ideal and surrendering unto Him. There is no scope for euthanasia, i.e. assisted suicide. That will only worsen the situation.

You cannot escape samskara by assisted suicide

Some dogmatic persons think that after assisted suicide or death they will live joyously in heaven. As Ananda Margiis, we do not subscribe to such dogmatic concepts. We know that one cannot escape their samskara. If you die, or deliberately terminate your life, you will be reborn and face that samskara. If you commit assisted suicide then you will also face the negative consequences associated with intentionally destroying your body. So it is a double loss.

Here is the English summary:
Parama Purusa is omnipresent. Whatever you are doing anywhere, and whatever you are thinking in your mind, He is watching and listening. You cannot even think anything that is hidden from Him, what to say of doing anything.

Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe,
Na pabbata'nam vivaram pavissa,
Na vijjati so jagtippadeso,
Yatthathito munceyya pa'pkamma.

You are hiding in the sky, no, no, you will see that His eyes are also seeing you there. "Na samuddamajjhe," If you are hiding in the ocean, you will see He is watching you there. "Na pabbatnam vivaram pavissa," If you have entered in the cave of a mountain there also you cannot escape, His eyes are watching in darkness too. Therefore there is no space or place in the universe where you can hide from His eyes.
Those who do not believe in samskara theory think that by eliminating their body they can put an end to their suffering. But they do not know that wherever they go they will have to face their suffering. So then why not face it here and now? Those who commit assisted suicide will incur more sin and be reborn as animals and undergo countless tortures.

Their suffering will multiply exponentially

The whole scene is no different from those terrorists who think that by being a suicide bomber then they will reap the rewards of heaven and be surrounded by beautiful women for their gratification up to eternity. This is just their dogmatic outlook. In earnest, they will have to undergo the reactions of their actions. And their suffering will multiply exponentially.

Delays and alters the evolution of that animal

Here is why ignorant persons resort to euthanasia for their pets as well. They think that as soon as the body becomes lifeless - whether it be a human or an animal - then that being is now in a state of deep peace and serenity. So when they see that their pet cat or dog is suffering then they euthanize that pet. But that just grossly delays and alters the evolution of that animal.

Fallen monk: donkey birthday + 3 more

Baba

Fallen monk: donkey birthday

Namaskar,

This entire letter looks at the phenomenon of various avadhutas / avadhutikas who are celebrating their worldly birthday and glorifying themselves. Such a birthday celebration is called a donkey birthday party. We have to seriously consider the appropriateness of this. Is it consistent with Ananda Marga ideological teachings - or not.

~ One debauched monk snuggling with his young lady friend while celebrating his birthday ~

What is spiritual birth

Baba’s teaching is that during initiation one gets rebirth. Keeping this in mind, it is important to consider and rethink the notion of celebrating one’s physical birth and boosting one’s image.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “With an initiated person the first birth was the physical birth and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation. Such a person is dvija, born twice: First, you are simply born as an animal being. But this second time, as a human being. So unless and until one is initiated one is not, one cannot be, treated as a human being.” (1)

Thus one’s physical birth does not hold much value in the life of a spiritual aspirant. When a person gets initiated onto the path of dharma sadhana, that is their real birth – i.e. getting tantric diiksa and taking shelter at Sadguru Baba’s feet.

Sadhaka life starts where?

Regarding birthdays, it also has to be mentioned that our present life is a part life. It is not a full life. Our life began when our consciousness first emanated from the Cosmic Hub. Since that time we have undergone incarnation after incarnation.

Ananda Vanii states, “After millions of animal lives, a created being attains the human form...” (2)

Next Baba highlights the importance of one’s spiritual initiation as a time of birth.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “In Sanskrit, dvi means “two” and ja means “born”, so dvija means “twice born”…the first birth was the physical birth, and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation.” (3)

One should not think that when the spermatozoa fertilises the egg and ensueing birth is one grand birthday event. Life should be spiritually oriented, not goaded toward the mundane. Every sadhaka in the Marga should reconsider how far they should celebrate their “birthday”. For workers, there is no question of celebrating as they have given up everything of their unit existence for Guru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. At each and every juncture or stage of an avadhuta’s / avadhutika’s training they are given a new name because each stage itself represents a new birth – a new beginning, all the while leaving behind their old life. In which case, where is the scope for an avadhuta / avadhutika to celebrate their own worldly birthday and sing their own glory.

Indeed, all sadhakas in the Marga should take a moment and consider the points in this letter and see if really they feel it appropriate and beneficial to celebrate their own birthday and glorify their unit self.

~ Look where this monk has both of his hands ~

Donkey birthday and spirit of avadhuta / avadhutika

The spirit of being an avadhuta / avadhutika is to dedicate everything to Marga Gurudev. By getting avadhuta / avadhutika diiksa and by getting their new avadhuta / avadhutika name, they no longer have anything of their own. In that blessed state, everything belongs to Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. And Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is their mother, father, and everything. That is the oath they have taken.

They surrender their all – their entire I-feeling – at His lotus feet. Their name has changed; their address has changed; their identity has changed. They have no past connection with their worldly life, nor their worldly birth. Avadhutas / avadhutikas give everything to Parama Purusa – they have nothing left to call their own.

That is why in the conduct rules of the avadhuta / avadhutika, there is no such thing as the observance of one’s own donkey birthday or any form of celebration or glorification of one’s own unit existence. Rather the avadhuta’s / avadhutika’s goal of life and the be-all end-all of their existence is to glorify Baba’s image. They are to be established solely in Marga’s Guru’s glory.

Wt Conduct Rule states: “Avadhuta / avadhutika shall always keep himself engaged in the service of Gurudeva with sincerity and devotion, in thought, words and deed, in subtle and in crude spheres, in inner and outer expressions of life.” (4)

In that case, there is not an iota of scope to celebrate one’s own unit birthday, and pump up their unit ego. Our wholetimers are to think and focus on Parama Purusa.

Tadekam’ smara’mah…Tadekam’ nidha’nam’

Ananda Marga ideology states, “That Cosmic Entity alone should be created in your mind and no other object…He is the terminating point. He is the Supreme Desideratum.” (5)

How donkey birthday celebration brings degeneration

Celebrating one's own birthday leads to the degeneration of mind. Because by thinking of oneself, highlighting the unit ego, the mind gets smaller and smaller.

And when thinking of oneself in a glorified way by allowing an entire gathering of people to hold a party in your honour and sing happy birthday to you by distorting Baba's compositions of Prabhat Samgiita - which is what some of our acaryas are doing - then this goes against all codes of Wt conduct, etiquette, and spiritual life. Verily this runs contrary to being an Ananda Margii and disciple of the Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. Such a scene will certainly lead to one's degeneration.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Vanity harms the mind in three ways...The second [way] is gaorava, self-aggrandizement or boasting – projecting oneself as a great personality...Is this really something great of which human beings can feel proud? And what is the result of this self-glorification? Raorava means the seventh hell." (6)

Glorifying the unit self is path to degeneration

Some Wts are having the entire room sing happy birthday to them - by manipulating Baba's Prabhat Samgiita which is meant for the arrival of Parama Purusa. In that case, those acaryas themselves are the guest of honour, and everyone is there to celebrate them and jack up their prestige. That makes the entire donkey birthday event just about their own petty I-feeling. Those who are fallen like to do this otherwise true sadhakas sing the glory of Parama Purusa.

Ananda Marga sadhana diminishes the petty ego, enlarges one’s I-feeling, and imposes a universal ideal with the help of the ista mantra: “I am Brahma.” By regular practice, then one golden dawn, one will realise that, “Really, I am Brahma.” But celebrating their own birthday moves in the opposite direction by glorifying the unit self - “I am great.” Just thinking about one’s petty I-feeling the mind becomes smaller and smaller. Then one day such a person will be unfit to even have a human body. That state is negative pratisaincara. That is why Ananda Marga philosophy condemns self-glorification. Because that invites their degeneration. Celebrating one’s own birthday is the equivalent of self-glorification and that is why it is prohibited for Wts and true sadhakas. Baba forbids this.

Conclusion

For every aspirant, their first birth is the biological birth; and their second birth is initiation. For a Wt, their third birth is the name given to become a brahamacarii, and their fourth birth is becoming an avadhuta. Materialists think that their body is everything and life starts when coming from the mother’s womb. But, according to Ananda Marga philosophy, this life is a part-life. Before this life, there have been so many births and deaths, and births and deaths, and births and deaths etc. So why should one, especially a sadhaka, look upon the biological birth in this particular life as “the birthday.” Top of all, birthday celebrations are nothing more than self-glorification. Trying to establish oneself - ie. one pratiśt́há - is like the feces of swine. True sadhakas do not like to glorify themselves rather they venerate Parama Purusa. For all these aforesaid reasons only fake people celebrate their biological birthday and pump up their unit ego. Bhaktas never celebrate their birthday.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Jyoti

Three grade of monks

Some persons may raise the question that when Baba has given the birthday celebration chapter in Caryacarya, then what is wrong if our avadhutas / avadhutikas celebrate their birthday? The answer is quite clear. In Caryacarya, Baba also explains what type of meat a person should eat if they cannot resist eating meat. But that does not mean sincere sadhakas and avadhutas / avadhutikas should also eat meat or that we should appreciate meat eating.

Remember, Caryacayra is our smrti shastra – our social code – which is not eternal. It depends upon time, space, and person. All kinds of people are coming onto the path Ananda Marga. For some, Baba has given such rules for periods of transition onto the path of dharma.

Everyone knows that in Ananda Marga there are three types of sadhakas: pashvacariis (Pashvácára: “Animal Way”, the first level of Tantra practice in which the aspirant struggles against animal instincts), viiracariis (heros), and divyacariis (divine). Pashvacariis are half-margiis; viiracariis are mediocre sadhakas, and those who are very strict and do not compromise on points of dharma are divyacariis. There will always be a mixture of all three grades of sadhakas. Always, new people are coming into human life and they will enter onto the path of pashvacara. After many lives and with the grace of Parama Purusa, they will one day become viiracariis.

This point of eating meat in Caryacarya is for pashvaraiis. They compromise on various aspects of 16 points, but they are also margiis. They live amongst us – we all know this and recognize who is who. A person may not openly declare, “I am a pashvcarii; I am a half-margii”, but everyone knows. When such pashvacariis become strong, established margiis, their manner will be different. Then they will not do such things like eating meat and celebrating their birthday.

Just as meat-eating is a hindrance to those on that path of sadhana. Similarly, indulging in self-glorification – such as celebrating a donkey birthday is not conducive to one’s spiritual progress. Rather it is antithetical. Our spiritual philosophy condemns all forms of self-glorification.

No donkey birthday celebration for Wts

It is very well-known that no Wt or avadhuta / avadhutika should be involved in celebrating their own donkey birthday, boosting their little ego.

Many may recall how in the early 1970's when Ac. Nirmohananda Avt celebrated his own donkey birthday in Daltonganj, then Baba reprimanded him. With His great love, Baba wanted to (a) see Nirmohananda become a sterling example and (b) set the record straight regarding proper WT conduct. So Baba sent a strong message by rebuking Nirmohananda in front of everyone. Seeing this, all workers immediately understood that they have not come on this earth to party and celebrate their own unit birthday and honour themselves. That is not what Baba wants.

Since then nobody asked permission from Baba to arrange the birthday celebration of any avadhuta / avadhutika. Nor did any acarya dare do so. In that case, their degeneration is sure. As Baba warns, their destiny is the depths of hell.

Just donkey’s birthday

In Ananda Marga, if anything is done for superficial show or in an insincere manner then that is not at all acceptable. For instance, if someone serves you food only to show how great they are then Baba terms that food as: donkey food.

In Shabda Cayanika it is described how if food is not offered with proper heartfelt feeling then that food is donkey food, gardabha’nna. So one must not eat that food. (7)

Similarly sadhana done with the primary motive of showing one’s greatness instead of pleasing Parama Purusa is donkey sadhana. And if kiirtan is sung with the primary motive as a display of one’s musical talent and instead of to spread the glory of the Lord, then that is donkey kiirtan. Likewise, when any Wt or avadhuta celebrated their own birthday in their honour instead of spreading the glory of Parama Purusa, then their celebration is a donkey birthday.

About the degraded monk

It is so unfortunate the the degraded monk shown at the beginning of this posting is committing a double sin. First he is celebrating his birthday, and secondly he is snuggling, hugging, and squeezing the opposite sex. What more is going on behind the scenes, it is anyone’s guess. Whatever may be, this type of close touching and dealing with the opposite sex flies in the face of all avadhuta conduct rules. That is why we say this person (Chidrupananda / Cidrupananda) is just a degraded monk. He has his own way of dealing as he just sits in Venezuela surrounded by so many female groupies as they honour and cater to him day-in, day-out, always.

Those who do this type of penance feel love for

"Bándhan jetháy ceye chilum,se bándhan keno ná elo..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3752)

Purport:

Why has the Supreme Charmer, that most radiant Parama Purusa, whom I have been seeking, not come. He is the darkness of my nights as well as the effulgence of my days; He is my everything. Alas, He is remaining far.

I wanted a psycho-spiritual bond with Him to gradually grow closer and closer through the sweet ideation of my Ista mantra, different sadhana lessons, and dhyana etc: In all the ways up to transcendentality and samadhi - until ultimately becoming one with Him. I desired that by calling Him constantly through the repetition & striking of my mantra with bhakti and heartfelt feeling, He will bless me  His effulgence of consciousness. I wanted His eternal kindness, His extreme proximity and oneness. Alas, He is remaining far.

I wish for that bond of supreme prema. By falling in love with Him, His divinity will descend in my unit existence. Those who do this type of penance feel love for His vast creation also, as the neo-humanistic feeling sprouts in their heart. Then sadhaka feels each and every manifestation of this grand universe is their own.

Those sadhakas blessed by Him and engaged in pointed, arduous meditation surely love all beings. O' Parama Purusa Baba, You are my everything...

== Section 3: Important Teaching ==

How to practice brahmacarya

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “This world is changing, moving. The word jagat (world) is derived from the root, gam-kvip, which means moving. This universe is the psychic manifestation of Brahma. All thought processes are moving and restive, and that is why this world, the psychic manifestation of Brahma. All thought processes are moving and restive and that is why this world, the psychic manifestation of Saguńa Brahma (the Subjectivated Transcendentality), is moving and restive. A thing that appears beautiful today is not necessarily so tomorrow. A sandesh (sweetmeat) that is delicious today will not be fit for consumption after a few days. Indeed one cannot even vouch for its shape still being intact. Every unit is in a state of change, and that is why the pleasure derived from unit objects cannot last permanently. So what should a Sádhaka (spiritual aspirant) do? He or she must ascribe divinity to every unit object. Everything is the manifestation of God. Whether it is land, home, river, mountain, respect, insult, day or night – everything is He and His manifestation as a unit. Make proper use of all objects thinking that they are His gifts to us. To enjoy or endure anything is to enjoy or endure Him. Avoid the attraction of the unit and make contact with the integral whole. When you are able to live this way, the desire to steal the property of others will completely disappear. In Ananda Marga there is a special process through which one can dedicate everything to God. The ascription of divinity to objects means the pursuit of the Infinite, leaving the finite behind. Are you feeding your son? No, no, you are feeding the son-like manifestation of Brahma. Are you tilling the field? No, no you are serving the finite manifestation of Brahma with your plough. Really speaking, the ascription of divinity to objects precludes their material enjoyment, as the objects then merge in the non-material Supreme Brahma. Thus the mind of one, who has established him or herself in real Vaerágya (the renunciation of all sensual pleasures) can never become attached to finite objects. Even in their midst he or she remains beyond the reach of their attraction and gains eternal peace after death.” (1)

Note: Some people are not aware how to practice second lesson. They merely repeat their mantra without taking any ideation. What they do not realise is that ideation is key for the efficacy of second lesson.

How to catch falsehood + 4 more

Baba

How to catch falsehood

Namaskar,

In this vaeshyan era, advertisers are notorious for booming their messages over and over again to consumers through countless media channels. With a constant stream of propaganda 24 / 7, they are able to influence people in various ways and put forth numerous falsehoods based on how a person should look, eat, drink, think, act etc. This is how they get people to buy their products - by booming their message until people accept it as a truism in their subconscious mind. After getting indoctrinated in this way, those naive people repeat and discuss those same ideas with others. In this way, the spread of those faulty notions multiplies.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How communist leaders spread false news

In communist nations, the leaders always project their false propaganda by booming their message again and again. They repeat their bogus views until the common citizens hold those ideas to be true.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Communism has survived long after the death of Marx. It survived only due to the force of arms and constant booming. If constant booming is done for something, then people start thinking that there must be some truth in what is being propagated...Communists are doing constant booming about their theory. Due to this people are being brainwashed, and at this stage it is very easy to inject incorrect ideas into their minds. By constant booming of their wrong theory they are creating their supporters." (1)

So communist leaders themselves repeat their false party propaganda time and again, and by this way draw a legion of followers who accept that communist propaganda as true.

A similar thing is going on in our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha organisation. Take the case of the various tiirthas or so-called holy sites. One group says that Jamalpur tiirtha is the "holiest place" and another group says that Tiljala is the "holiest place". Some think one place is the most important and others think another place is the "holiest". They each think that Baba is tied to their so-called holy land and resides there. For the margiis then, it all depends upon which group influences them most.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How to get the right understanding

As sadhakas we must be able to discern between truth and falsehood, otherwise we will be misled. According to Baba we must use our viveka or discriminating faculty.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Now, human beings are capable of judging between right and wrong because their minds are somewhat developed, but the minds of creatures other than humans are not so developed. Because of their undeveloped minds, they cannot follow the path of rationality, the path of discrimination, which almost every human being can. Those who say that there is no need of study – “Leave your books aside!” – are incorrect. Study is essential, knowledge is essential, and association with learned and enlightened people is essential. Listening to learned discourses, studying and understanding the scriptures, all have their importance." (2)

By educating oneself about Baba's divine teachings, that sadhaka will be able to develop the requisite viveka and hold the course of dharma and not be swayed by groupist agendas.

Blind people cannot discriminate between proper & improper

If however anyone fails to adhere to Baba's tenet and does not study Ananda Marga ideology, then their plight will be similar to that of the bird in Baba's below teaching.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "But animals less-evolved than humans are incapable of this. They cannot follow the path of rationality or conscience. The more-developed animals merely follow the path of sentiment. When an animal likes something, it runs after it; when it does not like it, it does not run after it. For instance, a dog runs toward a piece of bread without looking to either side. Or, for example, some grains of rice are spread under a net. Suddenly a bird catches sight of the grains and alights on the ground. It thinks: “Let me go down and eat them!” So it is caught in the net. But had it pursued the path of rationality, it would have thought: “Hmmm, rice is strewn in such a remote woodland! This is unnatural. There is neither a village nor rice fields nearby – so this is indeed strange. Let me think this over for a while… Aha! A net has been spread and ropes are laid on all sides. I must not alight there!” This is the way of logic. But if it follows the path of sentiment it will alight and be caught in the net..." (3)

In His next teaching, Baba warns us about falling prey to any kind of sentiment like groupist sentiment.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "If someone moves along the path of sentiment instead of the path of rationality, there is a hundred percent probability of great danger. Those who move along the path of sentiment do not discriminate between the proper and the improper, but merely silently accept all superstitions surrounding the goal towards which they have been running. Even the least question regarding propriety or impropriety does not arise in their minds, because they are moving along the path of sentiment." (4)

Conclusion

In this situation, where all the group's are fast propagating their own gospel, the only way to keep firm to the path is to study Baba's divine teachings. And one should be keenly aware that the campaigns stemming from a particular camp will contain news tainted by a given agenda.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The best remedy then is Baba's divine teachings. He has given so many discourses. Only when one is cent-per-cent familiar with Baba's eternal guideline can one keep away from the group agendas. We are not to believe on hearsay. Otherwise, one will invariably be misled and get lured into following a particular group, instead of Baba's dharmic teachings. As Baba guides us, study is very important. That is the only way to uphold, protect, and follow Ananda Marga ideology.

Baba says, "Study is essential, knowledge is essential, and association with learned and enlightened people is essential. Listening to learned discourses, studying and understanding the scriptures, all have their importance." (5)

Namaskar,
In Him,
Sudeva

Nowadays, we all receive news instantaneously from all parts of the globe. The news arrives via news sites / newspapers, discussion forums, blogs, emails, text messages, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, television, cell phone conversations, and all kinds of ways. A key point in all of this is how to gather, receive, and best understand that news. How are we to know what is true and what is false - not just about news of the general society, but news from within our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha as well.

~ In-depth study ~

Truth is one - not many

In reality however, the universal truth is always the same, not many. Here are some common examples:
(a) 2 + 2 = 4; it will never be that a 2 + 2 = 3, 6, or 9.
(b) a triangle has 3 sides; it will never be that a triangle has 11, 12, or 14 sides.
(c) a healthy dog has 4 legs; it is not the case that a fit dog has 1 or 7 legs.

These statements are true in all conditions. They are singular in nature not plural. There are not multiple truths. The truth is one. Same is the case with Ananda Marga ideology. It is one dharmic truth - not many.

Repeat “truths” till margiis believe it

In this following teaching, Baba describes the irony of how various religious factions or sects each claim to offer the supreme truth, yet each faction offers a different message.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "The supporters of each and every scripture say, “Ours is the message of God, it is the supreme word.” Then if all the scriptures are messages of the same Supreme Being, why do they vary from one another? The Supreme Being is one, and if all the scriptures are messages of that single Supreme Being, then there should not be any variation amongst themselves. This shows that those scriptures are not the messages of that Supreme Being." (6)

Similarly, the theology of various groups differ from one other yet each claims that theirs is the message of Baba. And this leads to serious problems.

Each group promotes their own false propaganda - or their own separate set of "truths" - which gets repeated again and again until all the margiis in their group buy into that propaganda. By this way, margiis of different groups grow very far apart because they are all adhering to a different "truth". Thus the schism deepens.

In this way there are many examples of how each group does booming about their own false notions to their followers. Each group claims to be the path of truth yet all have distinctly different propaganda.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Indoctrinate their followers into their agenda

There are some margiis who think that the observance of mahaprayan is ok and they are telling their friends to participate because it is "consistent with Ananda Marga philosophy". In that case, how can one accuse those innocent margiis of spreading dogma. It is not their fault. Rather some Dada injected this dogma and told them to celebrate mahaprayan and those people did not read and study Ananda Marga scriptures to find out the truth. So they got misled by that hearsay. Those margiis participating in the archaic and dogmatic mahaprayan function are not to be blamed. They were given faulty instructions.

Then there are some who belong to a specific group. Whatever group they join they are taught certain defective ideas and dogmas by those group leaders. This applies to all the groups. They indoctrinate their followers into their own agenda items. Those receiving messages from a particular group should be aware that they are receiving one-sided news, i.e. false propaganda advanced by a factional think-tank.

If the person or place from where you are gathering your news is faulty, or if that person is getting their news from a weak source, then you may be receiving incorrect news. This especially happens when the person telling you the news does not himself realise that what he is telling you is faulty. So with an earnest mind and sincere voice he conveys news to you, yet the information he is repeating is itself spoiled. This is one common way that wrong ideas get propagated.

For instance, some religions or religious sects preach that the world was created in six days. The priests propagate this notion. In response, their followers carry this message to all whom they meet. Because in their heart they believe this dogmatic and false notion. When the source of the news is himself devious, then news may reach your ears via other people yet you may not even realise that those things are incorrect. These are but a few examples from the general society where the common people unknowingly spread false news to others. The root cause is that they are being fed faulty ideas which they hold to be true.

Today my spring season is passing away in vain

“A'ji mor vasant jhariya' ja'y avahela'y…” (Prabhata Samgiita #1153)

Note for Prabhat Samgiita #1153:

Spring season (vasanta): In this song, the end of the spring season means that the bhakta has been anxiously waiting for Parama Purusa and now at the end of this spring season, still He has not come. It is utterly heart-breaking for the bhakta that still Parama Purusa remains away.

In the hope of His arrival, so many decorations and preparations have been made: flower blossoms, new leaves, a sweet breeze. Indeed the whole atmosphere has been made beautiful by nature for His divine reception. But alas, He has not come and now everything is withering away. This entire episode portrays the deep melancholic longing of the bhakta. That is the basis of this entire song.

The song can also be interpreted that because of not getting Him close, the spring of the bhakta's life is gone - the bhakta’s good days are getting wasted. The bhakta is thinking: My best days are passing by and You are not coming.

It is just like how the beautiful spring season, with its colourful flower blossoms and tender green leaves, gets overwrought by the hot summer when the burning wind dries everything up and the whole earth becomes brown.

So this song can be understood or interpreted on two levels. It can be taken on a more literal level wherein really the spring season has passed in waiting for Him. Or the song can serve as a metaphor for how one's good days (the spring of one's life) are gone and still He has not come close.

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, due to Your “indifference” towards me, my spring season [1] is passing away in vain. It is getting ruined due to Your neglect. The good times are passing me by. There was a time when sadhana was going well and You were appearing in my dhyana. I had Your company, and would receive Your grace. But today in my mental grove a hot wind is blowing; everything is getting dry.

Baba, now the sweet, fragrant breeze has completely disappeared from the flower garden. The lush green beauty, the rolling grass, and the canopy of trees are all scorched and covered with dust. My spring season is passing me by. The climate has become completely suffocating and unbearable. O’ Parama Purusa where are You? Your presence will be a soothing balm.

O’ my loving One, I am not finding You anywhere, my most charming Entity. Please come and smile in Your heart-pouring manner, in Your ever-new attractive form in this difficult hour. Please come and show the path and guide those bewildered people who have lost their way. Please bring this person on the right path. You are my everything. Except You, no one is mine. You are my everything. Without You, my mind is restless; please come close. Without You, my spring season is passing in vain...

New perspective on psychology

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "According to general belief, psychology is a part of general science, and should therefore not be included as a part of philosophy. Thus psychology has been accepted as a branch of science in the West. But in A'nanda Ma'rga, psychology has been included as a part of philosophy. Moreover, according to A'nanda Ma'rga the scope of psychology is wider than what is usually accepted by psychologists." (1)

Note: Often we find in the west that psychology is taken as an intellectually dry subject, or some utopian idea, or something that does not have a link with our higher Self. Universities commonly categorise psychology as one of the social sciences. This started primarily because the western approach to psychology is dry - i.e. aspiritual. It does not have any link with the Supreme Entity. In true sense, the western approach towards psychology lacks sweetness and spiritual feeling. Perhaps that explains why we find that many western psychologists lead imbalanced lives.

In contrast, Baba's teachings in His book "Yoga Psychology" are completely different. This subject not a purely intellectual study, but a practical approach that is deeply connected with spiritual life. So it is our duty to remove the confusion in the mind of non-margiis about the subject of "psychology" and give it its rightful place.

Mahaprayan of one great margii

Baba

Mahaprayan of one great margii

🙏 Dear brothers and sisters in Him

It is with sadness that we announce the mahaprayan of a fellow devotee Mr Gina Singh from Johannesburg, South Africa on the 17 of January 2018.

Gina was initiated in 1984 and received PC in 1986 - during the floods. He loved Prabhat Samgeet and Kirtan- being himself an accomplished singer and musician.

A few months back he was one of the members of an entourage from South Africa who visited India- following Baba's trail from Jamalpur through to Ananda Nagar and Amjharia. I sure that many will remember him for the Kirtan he sang in Amjharia.

He will be sorely missed for the vibrant role he played at our DCs and retreats.

Gina will also be missed by the community for his weekly presentation of a radio program aptly titled Ananda Parivar. Gina was truly Baba's son.

He leaves behind a proud legacy, a devoted family - a wife, four children and grandchildren - all committed to the ideals of our beloved Baba.

Warm Namaskar,
Amrit

Note: We regret that we could not send this out in timely manner. Our apologies. - AM Universal Moderators

~ In-depth study ~

We have seen that when somebody dies then in offering their condolences people say now Mr So-and-so is sitting on Baba's lap. On other occasions when telling a Baba story people also say, "Such and such person sat on Baba's lap." But these days the trend is that "sitting on Baba's lap" is used more in connection with death. And that causes some confusion in reader's mind. To unknot the situation please read below.

Dogma: if "on Baba's lap" only used for death

Here are quoted lines from recently posted emails on various forums, wherein the writer uses the phrase - "in Baba's lap" - with the occasion of death:

- "May Parama Purusa Baba accept her in HIS divine lap"

- "May his soul rest in the lap of our beloved BABA"

- "Now she is taking rest in Baba's Lap."

- "May Baba accept him in HIS divine lap....."

- "May he rest in HIS loving lap of eternity."

- "We are sure that Baba has taken him in His loving lap."

- "May his soul rest in Baba's lap forever."

- "Let her rest peacefully in Baba's Lap - which she always desired."

- "now he is in beloved Baba's lap"

- "May his soul get peaceful place in His lap"

- "He is now in Bábá's loving lap"

- "May Baba bless him with a seat in His lap."

- "May BABA accept him in HIS divine lap!"

- "May Baba take him in his eternal loving lap."

- "May his soul rest in peace taking shelter in Baba's lap."

- "Please keep him on Your lap forever."

- "We all collectively pray to Baba to take him on Baba's divine lap forever.”

All of the above lines are commonly written in eulogizing the deceased. These days mostly it is used in a eulogy and rarely used to recount one's intimate spiritual experiences - unfortunately. By this way, the phrase "in Baba's lap" is being misused and step by step the real meaning is being forgotten as now people more commonly use the phrase to eulogize those who have died, and much less so to express their inner feelings of bhakti. Unfortunately, the meaning and inner spirit of the phrase is getting lost.

Baba story: "sitting on Baba's lap"

Some time ago after dharmacakra, a senior margii was recounting his experiences of having dharma samiiksa with Baba. He said, "After being lovingly scolded by Baba for my wrongdoings, then He called me close and placed me on His lap - I remained there for some time soaking up His love - and He blessed me."

We all enjoyed hearing about his personal account with Baba during dharma samiiksa. When he finished telling his factual and historical event, there was a call for questions. Various people posed their queries. Towards the end, one new margii raised his hand and asked, "How did Baba bring you back to life?"

Everyone stared at the new margii in amazement. There was a look of astonishment all around - people were really shocked to hear him say this. The new sadhaka sensed that something was wrong He said very matter-of-factly, "I thought that sitting on Baba's Lap means that he (the margii) died - that is why I asked that question."

This was quite eye-opening for those of us in the room: Through our language and expression we had unknowingly taught someone to think that being on Baba's lap is the equivalent of death. Because it seems that nowadays people only use the phrase "Baba's lap" when a person has died, such as "Let him rest peacefully in Baba's lap", as if in order to sit on Baba’s lap one has to die. But that is false. Sincere sadhakas regularly sit on Baba’s lap in their meditation. It is His grace. It is just like a child need not die in order to sit on his father’s lap.

The idea is that this phrase - Baba's lap - has been linked with death due to extreme overuse. So for some time if sadhakas use this phrase exclusively for spiritual purposes, that will be best. The phrase, "sitting on Baba's lap", should not meet a similar fate. It should not lose its pure spiritual quality and just refer to one's death. That will be very negative.

Baba would bless bhaktas and place them on His lap

There are tens of thousands of recorded stories by sadhakas where they use the phrase, "on Baba's lap", when describing their experiences of being with Baba: He used to bless them and bring them on His lap. People should understand the deeply mystical value of this expression, and not just think that Baba's lap means death, i.e. that you can only sit on His lap at the time of death. Still today there are thousands of margiis walking this earth who sat in Baba's lap. And not only that, there are countless more sadhakas who were blessed by Baba in dreams and sadhana wherein they sat in His lap. And still today this deeply intimate experience is attainable by sadhakas, by His grace.

There are so many ways an aspirant can reach unto Baba's lap including in sadhana. That is the main idea that should be preserved. Sadhana is a spiritual practice and one can sit on Baba's lap in sadhana. We should make it cent-per-cent clear to one and all that the phrase, "sitting on Baba's lap", does not mean death.

"Mahaprayan" means death of mortals - confirm for yourself
from the Samsad Bengali-English Dictionary

Mahaprayan (Death): Many are aware that mahaprayan (death) is the common term used in India and especially in our Bengal to describe the death of any human being, even ordinary people. In that way, the obituary columns of the newspapers of Bengal regularly cite the mahaprayan (death) of various persons of society who died or passed away.

Some may get confused and wrongly think that the word 'mahaprayan' (death) is one extraordinarily term of bhakti to be used in association with Parama Purusa. But that is not at all the case. Rather to do so is only to undermine the eternal presence of Parama Purusa. That is why no bhaktas ever use the word 'mahaprayan' in reference to Lord Shiva or Lord Krsna. Because Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna exist eternally. Then there is no question of Their mahaprayan (death).

Baba is Parama Purusa so He is eternal and there is no question of His mahaprayan.

Here it should be known that the convention of an annual death day ceremony (i.e. shraddhainjali or mahaprayan) is a foundation of the Islamic tradition. Muslims are well known for this, and their approach of an annual death day ceremony was adopted by the leader of a particular group in AMPS. So no one should think that mahaprayan is some type of sacred event. It is done on the death day anniversary of Muslims.

And for those who need still more technical proof then all this can be clarified quite readily by referencing the dictionary. Specifically in the Samsad Bengali-English dictionary 3rd edition on page 848. Checking there it will be confirmed that the word 'mahaprayan' means death. Which is why it is used to refer to the passing away of even common citizens. And that is the case in this letter also. The term mahaprayan means death and this is the ideal term for this purpose.

Mahaprayan is only for humans not for Sadguru

Here it should be qualified that there is both real mahaprayan and fake mahaprayan. Real mahaprayan marks the death of any ordinary human being, just like the aforesaid news. This is the proper use of the term: To note a person's departure from this earth. That is the meaning of the mahaprayan term and that is the standard way the term is used in Indian languages.

Then there is the fake, or so-called, or dogmatic mahaprayan. That is when certain vested interests try to apply the mahaprayan term to Parama Purusa. This is grossly inappropriate because when Parama Purusa Sadguru Baba is that Divine Entity who is beginningless and endless and resides always in our heart, then it is entirely wrong to proclaim that He is gone.

That is why rational margiis are protesting; because the Oct 21st program is so-called mahaprayan. So-called means that something is fake. Parama Purusa is eternal, thus for some vested interests to declare "mahaprayan of Parama Purusa" is nothing but so-called mahaprayan.

Mahaprayan only really happens in the case of human beings, not Parama Purusa. Those doing mahaprayan for Sadguru are hypocrites. On the one side in meditation they ask His grace thinking that He is ever-present, and on the other side they think that Baba has passed way. That is their hypocrisy.
