Early days of AM: strict secrecy + 4 more

Baba
Early days of AM: strict secrecy

Namaskar,

In the late 1950's and very early 60's, Baba did not want unwanted people to know about Him. At the same time, new people were granted initiation, but not given any photo of Baba. Nor were they permitted to speak about the glory of their Guru. Just they were instructed that Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is their Guru. They only knew the name. But exactly who was Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji, that was not revealed.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In fact, in the initial stages of our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, everything was done very secretly. Margiis were not even aware about the existence of other Ananda Margiis. They did not know who was who. Thus, those early Ananda Margiis were not communicating with one another.

However, after doing sadhana for a few months, if they were sincere in their spiritual practices, they were allowed to go to DMC and see their Guru. So their first darshan with Marga Guru would happen at DMC, where sadhakas were blessed with the opportunity to get personal contact (PC). Still, even at that point, it was forbidden to speak about their own realization about Guru, as well as the glory of their Guru. Secrecy was strictly maintained.

Why secrecy those days in Jamalpur?

Those days it was the rule that if you saw Baba walking on the road, you could only do pranam to Him mentally. That is all. It was forbidden to raise your hands in namaskar mudra or do pranam etc, let alone do sastaunga pranam or touch His feet in public. One was not to make any gesture, or even stare at Baba. One could not do anything that might make the general populace think that Baba is a great and extraordinary personality. Every sadhaka was instructed to keep distance from Him in public and perform salutations to Him mentally.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Thus one could not display any behaviour which gave the idea or clue that people were coming from far and wide to have the Baba’s darshan. Any such behaviour was taken as being very detrimental. Baba just wanted to be viewed as an ordinary person in front of the general people - as a typical householder. This was His manner so long as he lived in Jamalpur. And the local people did not know anything about what was going on. Thousands were coming to see Him, and the general population did not have any idea.

Why was it done this way? The main reason was that Baba, being the Parama Purusa, did not wish to have a large crowd around Him - thereby making it into a big scene. Then it would be impossible for Him to attend to the vast array of works He came to do. For this reason, strict secrecy was maintained, and one was only permitted to speak about Ananda Marga ideology, but not about Baba.

Bhajans of 1960’s: “Don’t sleep, God has come in human form"

One time during that period in the early 1960's, Baba was on His way to hold DMC. While in transit, He had to change trains in Mansi railway station in North Bihar. Around ten bhaktas were there as they were also going to DMC. So they arranged some chairs on the railway platform, and when Baba arrived they had specially prepared one seat for Him. They arranged for Baba to sit on that chair on the platform, and they sat around Him on the ground. Due to the strong inner feeling, the margiis forgot all those dos and don'ts on secrecy etc, and then they started playing and singing bhajans in their local tongue:

"O' human beings don’t sleep, God has come in human form. Awake! open your eyes. He is here before you - don’t delay, open your eyes"

The bhajans were so vibrating the bhaktas could not control themselves. Remember, those days the ‘Baba Nam Kevalam’ kiirtana had not yet been given. They were just singing local, traditional bhajans and dancing in His bliss. Even those who were still sitting began swaying their bodies, raising their hands in the air, clapping, and expressing their unbounded joy etc. Baba was sitting quietly in the center on a chair. Hearing the sound of various musical instruments, many people came and were awed to see the scene: A family man was sitting in a chair with His eyes closed, and those around him were dancing in divine ecstasy. The onlookers could not understand what was going on. It was all a mystery to them.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Why Margiis startled & terrified?

When the train came Baba boarded in an isolated compartment and everything went smoothly - and various sadhakas also entered in the same reserved compartment with Baba. Then when the train was about to leave, in the glory of Baba, they raised the slogan also, "Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji kii - Jai!"

As soon as the train started moving, Baba started lovingly scolding them. Certainly, He was just expressing His feigned anger, but all present became startled - terrified. They saw the rudra (feigned anger) on His face and immediately realized their mistake. Quickly they accepted their punishment - grabbed their ears in shame - and vowed to never let this happen again.

There in the compartment, Baba told that, "You know, I have come here on this earth for some special work so I do not want to unnecessarily beat the drum and gather a crowd.”

Conclusion

The take-away from this story is that when Parama Purusa comes as Mahasambhuti, then He does not make a big hue and cry. Certain select bhaktas are blessed with the longing and bhakti to be around Him and participate in His Nara liila. They are called one-by-one. Others are not aware. The same thing happened with Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna as well.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So on this earth, three Mahasambhutis have come: Lord Shiva, Lord Krsna, and Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. Each time: (a) very few people supported Him; (b) most remained completely unaware of His advent; (c)  while some directly opposed Him. In His divine liila, Mahasambhuti created enemies and negative elements on the worldly level who seemed to be very powerful - politically and economically. That way He orchestrates His liila.

So He walks this earth, and the common mass is unaware about His presence. Those blessed to know about Him are ready to do and die for Him, while those not aware remain very skeptical. This type of extreme polarization occurs where the common ignorant masses support those enemies. In their confused state, those people are oblivious of the divine arrival of Taraka Brahma. That is the grand liila of Parama Purusa.

Namaskar,
at His lotus feet,
Prabhu Anura’gii

Who performed initiations those early days?

At the outset when Baba used to give all the initiations, then sadhakas used to convince new people to learn meditation. And when they were ready, their name was confidentially passed on to Baba for His approval. If Baba approved their candidacy, then He would give a date and time for that new person to come for their initiation. Accordingly they were sent to Baba, and Baba used to initiate them. But later on, Sadguru Baba created the acarya system - only family acaryas at the beginning, and those family acaryas began giving all the initiations and Baba stopped giving them on His own.

He comes to defeat the demons & elevate the masses

Yadá yadáhi dharmasya glánirbhavati bhárata,
Cábhyutthánaḿ adharmasya tadátmánaḿ srjámyaham.

Ananda Marga ideology, "When the number of demons in the world increases, when dharma is distorted or loses its pristine glory (here “gláni” or “distortion” means the removal of an object from its original place) and adharma rears its ugly head (when something raises its head far above its original height, it is called abhyutthána), Parama Puruśa has to incarnate Himself in a special way to annihilate the powerful demons." (1)

Guide society for ages to come

There in the train compartment, Baba told that, “You know, I have so many duties to do. And if dogmatic people start flocking around, then how will I be able to do the work which I have come especially to do? I have to teach sadhana, give Ananda Marga ideology which will guide the society for ages to come, instruct people how to recognise and eradicate dogma, show the way for leading an ideal human life, and illumine the path of emancipation. There are so many things I must do.” This is what Baba told those margiis in that train compartment.

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. If you want to forward this story then attach the following yellow section with the story:

This will be treated as the standard protocol.

Repentance in my heart

"Pratham jiivane, tumi a'so niko, ta'r la'gi, mane kono klesh na'i..." (Prabhat Samgiita #0379)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, Baba You did not come close to me in the dawn of my life; but, I do not agonize over why You did not bring me under Your shelter and am not pained by why You did not draw me near and become very intimate. I do not have any mental anguish about this. But I do have repentance in my heart for why I did not search for You. My life passed in vain. That is why my heart is burning and crying all the time. The fault is mine: In my early years I did not try to find You. That is the cause of my deep remorse.

Parama Purusa, My Supreme One, that time You were so close to me - living side by side, always. Even then I did not call You or try to attain You by learning sadhana. I did not care about that. Just my days and nights passed in useless pursuits in the early moments of my life. Now in my twilight years, the more those early remembrances sprout in mind, the more pain I feel.

Parama Purusa, Baba, everyone comes onto this earth for a short span of time, for a calculated period. And there are so many works to do. Yet fruitlessly people waste their time blaming God for their misfortunes - but there is no benefit in this. Because everyone is facing their own samskara. When they remove the umbrella of vanity, they will realise that Your grace is showering eternally.

Parama Purusa Baba, You are ever gracious; what You do is best for me. My only desire is to always remain under Your shelter...

Key difference: ripus & pashas

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Any action that creates a very unwholesome reaction in one’s own body and mind, and provides a lesson and momentum to that person to steer clear of such a thought or action, creates a reactive mentality against that type of action. That sort of reactive mentality is called ghrńańá, or hatred. Hatred is an imposed fetter on the mind. So it is included in the list of eight páshas, or fetters of the mind. That which is inherent or intrinsic in the mind and expresses itself in the external world is called ripu, or enemy. There are six ripus – lust, anger, avarice, blind attachment, vanity and jealousy. That which originates in the external world and influences the mind is called pasha. Thus ripu is intro-external and Pasha is extro-internal." (1)

What conditions commonly turn people into beasts

Ananda Marga ideology states, “If there is a dearth of intellectual pabulum and the intellectual standard of the people is not high, they can take “dos” to be “donts” and vice versa. Take for example, a communal riot where a little innocent boy is killed, and when the person who encourages the riot becomes the people’s leader. Where the intellectual standard of the people is low, people commit blunders – prompted by such leaders they become beasts. Those backward countries which have less socio-politico-economic consciousness in the people tend to have more immorality. In such countries the leaders misg
uide the people in order to collect votes. I call such leaders “political satans” or “political pigs” Such pigs become leaders only when the intellectual standard of the common people is low. In a country with shortages of physical and intellectual pabula, people ultimately become beasts and commit sins and crimes. To murder a person during a riot is both a crime and a sin. In political clashes innocent people are killed. This is also a crime as well as a sin. So, to summarize, when physical and intellectual pabula are lacking, people become beasts and commit sins and crimes. Among the three reasons for sin, this is the first and primary one. It is prevalent everywhere in the world although it is less evident in a few of the more affluent countries.” (1)

Sadhana: main pillar of life + 2 more

Baba
Sadhana: main pillar of life

Namaskar,

Each and every margii knows the importance of practising sadhana on a daily basis so that we can move along the path of spirituality and reach our goal i.e, attain Parama Purusa. And even more fortunate are those who learn sadhana in childhood as the following story explains.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba story about a young sadhaka

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Once a child named Dhruva started doing sadhana and singing bhajanas at the early age of five. This scared the eminent rsis and munis. They thought that this young boy would surpass them in spiritual excellence. So, as devotees, they all implored Narayana to save them from being defeated and humiliated. Narayana sent Narada to resolve the issue. So Narada came to the boy Dhruva and tried to allure him with toys, sweets, a kingdom, and things of that sort. He inquired why the boy was so enthusiastic about sadhana and bhajanas at such an early age, especially when he had a whole lifetime at his disposal for spiritual pursuits.

Dhruva replied,
Kaomara acaret prajinah dharman
Dhgavataniha Durlabham manusam janma tadapyadhruvamarthadam

"'O Narada! You are a sage, you know much more than I do. Yet I wish to mention, in order to clarify things, that we get a human form after numerous animal lives.' 'Sukrataer manavo bhutva.' This human life is attained through the medium of lots of clash and cohesion. Of all creatures' existence, this human existence is the most rare. But even rarer is the human body that has been perfected through sadhana..."

"Dhruva further said, 'Narada, who knows what will happen tomorrow? You have become old and you got the opportunity to do sadhana and sing bhajanas at this age. But in my life, the sun may or may not rise tomorrow. Suppose I die tonight? So how can I wait till old age?'"

"Then Narada went away silently."

"'Dharman Bhagavataniha,' Dhruva said. Everyone should try to become established in Bhagavata Dharma in childhood." (1)

Sadhana: centerpiece of life

From this story, we can realize the importance of learning sadhana in childhood so that our whole lives can be infused with spirituality. As Dhruva says, why should we wait until old age to pursue spirituality as death can come at any time. So those who learn sadhana in childhood are truly blessed. And verily, whenever one enters onto the path of sadhana, they should make it the centerpiece of their life. And one should not delay in getting all the lessons of sadhana and practicing them diligently.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Human life is short. It is wise to get all the instructions regarding sádhaná as soon as possible.” (2)

Ista mantra & realization

In our AM sadhana system, each and every ista mantra has two parts, or two syllables, and is coordinated with one’s breathing. The first syllable is repeated during the inhalation, and the second is repeated during the exhalation. And in each and every Ista mantra, the second syllable, i.e. the exhalation, is related with Godhood or Brahma bhava-- not one's unit 'I’ feeling. During sadhana, one gains realization primarily on the exhalation.

Ensconced in the Supreme

It is well known that people do not die while inhaling, but rather when exhaling. At the time of death, one performs their final exhalation and does not inhale again. In that case, no matter when death arrives, when one's final exhalation occurs, one is imbibed in ideation of the Supreme as they repeat the 2nd syllable of their Ista mantra. Therefore, at the time of death every Ananda Margii will certainly be ensconced in Brahma.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

Sadhana, mantra japa (repetition), and breathing are key elements in the life of every sadhaka. We should be very particular to know the meaning of our mantra and repeat it during each and every breath. By sincere and regular sadhana, that ideation will remain with us through every respiration, day or night. Then one’s life is truly blessed.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Now this japa is adjusted to your breathing, inhalation and exhalation. So if you practise it properly what will happen? Even while sleeping, automatically this japa kriyá will go on in accordance with your respiration – in accordance with your inhalation and exhalation. So while asleep you can do this thing. This is called ajapájapa. That is, there is no special endeavour from your side – the japa goes on automatically. Thus during the night you can also do puńya. Kuru puńyam ahorátram – “For all the twenty-four hours you can do puńya.”" (3)

In Him,
Hariish

Note: In select circumstances, the mantra itself is repeated in reverse sequence in order to gain the proper ideation, i.e. so that the ideation of Brahmahood is linked with the 2nd syllable, upon exhalation. These are some of the technical points related with sadhana. On these matters any further questions can be asked directly to a qualified acarya.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Importance of breathing

One of the most integral aspects of sadhana is breathing.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "One's life is determined on the basis of a few pulsations, and these pulsations depend on a specific number of inhalations and exhalations. The number of such inhalations and exhalations-- on an average, from twenty-one thousand to twenty-five thousand per day-- varies from person to person. The process of breathing has a great influence on the human mind and self, or soul." (4)

As Baba guides us, breathing is an intrinsic part of human life-- it is something we do 21,000 to 25,000 times per day, and this has a tremendous influence on our quality of mind and ability to dive deeper in sadhana.

Melody of the cosmos

“Nandana vane ke go ele…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0580)

Purport:

O’ Divine Entity, who are You who came in the lush and heavenly garden of my mind and spiritually intoxicated my whole being with the play of Your melodious flute? You filled the gentle breeze with the intoxicating and aromatic fragrance of sandalwood. The sweet scent of sandalwood is even emanating from Your body. Your presence has transformed everything.

Now, because of You, the mystical sound of omnkara resonates incessantly in my mind and heart. Every iota of my  being is vibrated by that subtle and enchanting sound. With the octaves of the seven worlds, You made me dance to the rhythm and melody of the cosmos. It is Your grace.

O’ my Dearmost, my restless heart does not want to leave You ever, rather it wants more and more of Your magnetic closeness. I feel that You are an integral part of my existence. Without You, I cannot survive. O’ Liilá Puruśa, with the divine play of Your Liila, You smeared the nectar of love in my mind and fully captivated my entire being. O’ Supreme Entity, I belong to You and You alone…

Prout strategy for elections + 4 more

Baba
Prout strategy for elections

Namaskar,

Those who do not understand the samaj system think that it is just based on local, narrow, or geo-sentiments etc, but the reality is that the samaj movement is universal in spirit but regional in approach. When samaj members sing the song for the freedom of their area, they simultaneously raise the slogan of universalism as well. Every samaj member thinks they belong to a greater, universal family.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Universal welfare intrinsic to samaj

It is just like how neo-humanists remove mice and cockroaches in caring for their own home, but that is not a narrow sentiment, because they also think about and embrace the cause of universal welfare. Similarly, every Ananda Margii must maintain their own individual existence, but side by side they also think about and reach out to serve the entire society. Prout’s samaj system works off of a similar principle.

From a different angle, some mistake defending their homeland against an aggressor as being a national sentiment or patriotism. But it is important to know that geo or national sentiment is in vogue only when one supports aggression towards outside countries and / or when one only thinks about the well-being of their own citizens and not the entire globe. Then it is the narrow mindedness of patriotism. According to Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, a neohumanist will fight in favour of their homeland to hold off aggressors, and, at the same time, be immersed in the thought of universal welfare.

The rise of samajas in political spectrum

Our samaj system is very important as it uplifts downtrodden communities. For example, in some countries and amongst certain rural populations, the local communities are looked upon as being extremely “backwards”. Due to an imposed inferiority complex, their language, demiculture, and lifestyle are deemed as lowly.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

To counteract this type of rampant exploitation of downtrodden communities, Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, the Propounder of Prout philosophy, has introduced the samaj movement to bring about a social awakening through all kinds of avenues including contesting elections. And verily this is the proper channel because even non-margii local parties are thriving. They are gaining victories in the elections. As Ananda Margiis and Proutists, we should follow suit: Get organised in our various samajas and contest elections.

We should not forget that the Propounder of Prout has given, “If you do not do the work then I will take work from the goats.” This metaphor is taking shape in practical life with regards to the samaj movement. If we look back 45 - 50 years and compare it with the present era, it is evident that samaj type of movements have grown a lot amongst non-margiis.

Momentum of samaj mostly lost in AMPS

After 1978, Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar was extremely keen to advance the samaj movement in all areas. He was discussing and advocating the samaj system everywhere and encouraged Proutists to contest local and state elections across the board. That very aspect of being engaged in the political process using the samaj platform is essential for gaining local support and propagating Prout. So it is a matter of great regret that since 1990 our various samaj movements have strayed from the course and lost momentum or even tended towards groupism as various Wts have infused their own agenda or sentiment. Now is the time to revitalise our samaj movements and advance the dynamic ways and universal ideas of Prout.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

It is the duty of sincere margiis to follow the guidelines of Prout and always run for political election and seats on their own samaj platform. That way we will garner immense, local, public support. The very deep-rooted emotional support which people get from their local samaj is absolutely key. Because one will never get that type of mass support for another platform or party. Local, native people are more attached to their own language, demiculture, heritage, legacy, and sentiment etc. This is the cornerstone of the Prout samaj system, and we should rally upon that feeling and utilise it for a higher cause of social good.

in Him,
Ranaviira Karkre

~ In-depth study ~

Overview of samaj system

Prout philosophy states, “In accordance with this trend, PROUT advocates the formation of self-sufficient socio-economic units [samajas] throughout the world. They will work to enhance the all-round welfare of the people in their respective areas and unite humanity on a common ideological base. The interests of all local people will be guaranteed and gain proper recognition. As each unit [samaj] becomes strong and prosperous it will merge with other units. The formation of a world government will assist this process of integration. Socio-economic units [samajas] will thus facilitate the comprehensive, multifarious liberation of humanity.” (1)

Universal in spirit, but regional in approach

Prout philosophy states, “Socio-economic units are bound to gain great popularity all over the world within a short time. While there may be diverse cultural expressions and socio-economic potentialities in different units, the points of difference should not be allowed to divide humanity. If the common sentiments of human beings are given prominence and the points of unity are made the basis of collective development, diversity will enrich humanity rather than tear it asunder. If each socio-economic unit is inspired by a comprehensive ideology and a universal outlook, human society will move ahead with accelerating speed towards a sublime ideal.”
“A sound ideological base is a prerequisite for socio-economic groupifications. Such a foundation is provided by universal humanism, which has the potential to unite all humanity. Universal humanism will not be established on the hard crust of the earth overnight, but will come to fruition gradually, stage by stage. It will include each and every person in the world, as well as animals, plants and inanimate objects. If a single person remains outside the influence of universalism and becomes a victim of exploitation, then the foundation of universal humanism will be undermined. Hence, PROUT has adopted a rational method to solve socio-economic problems which may be characterized as universal in spirit but regional in approach.” (2)

Inferiority complex is road to exploitation

Prout philosophy states, “The very purpose of injecting an inferiority complex is to exploit people on the psychic level, and this is exactly what happens in many spheres of social life. In some places you may notice some signboards written in a language not used by the local people. What is the purpose of putting up a signboard? It is just to give the local people certain information. If the letters are written in the language of the ruling exploiters and not in the language of the exploited – or if the local language is printed in small and humble letters underneath – what reaction will this create in the minds of the exploited? It is bound to generate an inferiority complex regarding their language and social position (the language of slaves is derogatorily called “vernacular” in English), and they will continue to suffer from this mental disease. Thus the ruling exploiters create indirect pressure on others’ minds so that their language maintains its high prestige and an inferior feeling arises in the minds of the people: “Ah! That is the language of the rulers!” The moment an inferiority complex is created, the ruling class uses it to exploit them psychically; those who are motivated by socio-sentiment continue their social exploitation in this manner. They infuse the same inferiority complex in other spheres of life also; then psychic exploitation occurs as a matter of course.” (3)

Magical spell of maya

“Máyá málance máyár mukul…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0574)

Purport:

In the flower garden of maya, the blossoms of maya are intoxicated with the wine of maya. Verily, those flowers are intoxicated with the wine of maya. And this world is like a grand, enticing garden created by maya wherein the living beings are intoxicated with the tempting allurements of this world. In the desert of maya, the hot, burning wind is blowing, and the grains of sand are flying everywhere. In this world, all kinds of tragedies and calamities happen, and people suffer in all sorts of ways, including from horrible diseases and gruesome deaths.

In this magical land of enchantment, coloured with the rising sun, in due course everything dissolves into the colours of the twilight. This world is transitory and fleeting. Those who come will one day all go. Those born will one day die. Yet they spend their days smearing the sweetness of maya on them. My mind is overflowing with the play of maya. The Lord of maya is smiling softly. Parama Puruśa is watching how all the jiivas are fully captivated by the magical spell of maya.

The rága-ráginis of this magical enchantment are singing the song in musical octaves. When the song ends, its music lingers in the sweet enchantment of liking. The maya is no illusion. She is ever-alive in her actions, and in those actions of maya, Máyádhiisha is dancing eternally…

Bath mantra: who is Baba talking about

Every margii chants the bath mantra on a daily basis after bathing. One of the terms in that mantra is r'si. Following is the definition:

Ananda Marga ideology says, "A rśi is one who cultivates wisdom, who enriches the intellectual field through deep research and innovative discoveries and harvests the fruits of wisdom. Those who invent deadly weapons such as the hydrogen bomb, which caused the frightening holocaust, do not help the human intellect attain the height of human perfection, but rather direct their intellect towards crudeness. These types of inventors and their patrons do not deserve to be called rśis, rather, they are worse than demons, far worse than internal creatures, having forfeited their right to human identity." Dogma of self-reliance

Ananda Marga philosophy teaches us, "You will hear many a vain and assuming person say, “I don’t need anyone’s help, I’m doing very well by myself. I don’t want to concern myself with anyone else’s affairs and I don’t expect anyone else to bother about mine.” Nothing could be more foolish than this statement. Medicine and nursing are necessary to cure diseases; the neighbours’ help is needed to cremate a dead body; and for the regular supply of food and cloth the cooperation of farmers and spinners is essential. Remember, no created being in this universe is independent. No one can exist alone, everyone has a supra-cosmic relationship with the whole, at times prominent, at times indistinguishable. In this scheme of mutual relationships, even the slightest mistake or discord will raise a furious furor in the universe. In this mighty creation, the brilliantly luminous sun and the tiny ant have the same existential value, having combined together to make the universal family. Similarly, in human society, the importance of a powerful and eminent person is no less than that of a disabled and dying patient. None can be ignored. The least injustice done to anyone will cause the breakdown of the entire social framework." (1)

3 ways people learn

In His Hindi teaching of General Darshan, 25 July 1970 Purnia, Baba is guiding us that people learn in three ways: (a) with their eyes by reading, (b) with their ears by listening, and (c) via gestures in sign language. In ancient India the number of literate people was less as they did not know how to read and write, but the number of scholars and educated people was very high as they learned and acquired knowledge by listening to dharmic stories etc. That is how they were educated. In contrast, in the present era people are very literate in that they are able to read and write, but they are less educated as they do not assimilate that knowledge. The central idea is that there are three ways to learn and we should utilize all three methods to create an educated society. Whatever dharmic guidelines we learn, we should follow and incorporate into our day to day life.

Main ingredient of flower garland

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Not only the gods are fond of the fragrance of flowers; devotees also want to string garlands for their beloved Iśt́a with the fragrant flowers of the devotion of their hearts. If a flower has no fragrance, it has no value for a devotee. One should remember that the fragrance of a flower and the tender sweetness of a devotional heart together make a perfect combination. What does the perfume of the flower represent? The worldly activity which a devotee does with a heart filled with love is the perfume of the flower, and the overflowing devotion for one's Iśt́a is the tender sweetness in the devotee's heart. With these two together, the devotee makes a garland. Now, if there are fragrant flowers, but there is no sweetness in the devotee's heart, then the devotee cannot make a garland for his or her Iśt́a – then there is no question of garlanding Him at all, and though the flower basket may be full of flowers, they wither with the pain of emptiness and the agony of unfulfilled yearning. Then if the Beloved does not accept the garland, what is the use of holding the basket full of flowers." (1)

Common issue in today’s world

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Under the influence of avidyá, people become so infatuated that they forget the difference between pure and impure; and so greedy that they eat rotten meat, choose to forget that alcohol is bad for health, and even try to prove the unholy as being holy by force of logic. Some people claim that eating meat and drinking alcohol are a part of dharma sádhaná; and some state they eat meat to maintain their health and strength."
"Lost in blind pursuit for finite objects, people fail to realize that the pleasure they derive will actually bring more sorrow in the future. An alcoholic does not understand that heavy drinking severely damages the liver: an opium addict does not understand that the temporary pleasure derived from the drug gradually benumbs the nervous system. This mistaking pain to be pleasure is caused by the influence of avidyá. Those who succumb to this influence can be likened to a dog chewing on a dry bone in a burial ground. The dog thinks that the blood oozing out of its jaws comes from the dry bones and greedily bites even harder, further damaging its jaws. The poor animal wrongly thinks sorrow is happiness." (1)

Note: You might have come across how even some proper humans get degenerated and indulge in all kinds of vices. The root cause is their free will and avidya maya. The way avidya maya binds humans it does not do to animals. Humans have freedom / free will and they are therefore more prone to be bound by avidya maya. So avidya maya allures them and pushes them into the deep, dark chasm. And they degenerate. That is the sorry state of affairs. That is why sometimes you see that even those who were once great monks end up leading a degenerated life. If the noose of avidya maya is very strong then they do not realise their downfall either. They cannot understand that they are so degenerated, just like most of our purodha ji maharajas.

How people used to cure and treat themselves

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Where medicines were not effective as external ointments, it became necessary to rub them on the skin or on the nerves where they could be absorbed through the pores. People discovered these rubbing medicines somewhat later. These massage or rubbing ointments were the discovery of a later stage."

"Where there was any poisonous effect of the rubbing ointment, there was no recourse but to use it externally. However, people learned to use them without any poisonous effect in the form of liquid medicines by dissolving them in water or other liquid solvents."

"There are certain ointments which, if ingested in small doses, have no poisonous effect, but which may have a poisonous effect if taken in large doses. Human beings learned to use them by licking them so that they could act effectively through the nerve fibres. They used to swallow those medicines after licking them with the tongue for a long time. Because the quantity is very small there is no harmful effect; rather one gets the full benefit. Such medicines are called avaleha [licking] in Ayurveda."

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "People even discovered some medicines that develop certain special beneficial qualities when mixed with other specific substances. In other words, the same medicine when mixed with substance “a” became a medicine for headaches, when mixed with substance “b” became a medicine for diarrhea, and when mixed with substance “c” became a medicine for respiratory ailments. In this case, people gave the name anupána [ingredient] to the substances “a,” “b” and “c”. That is, by discovering that the medicinal qualities varied according to the different anupánas, people began to use them as medicines." (1)
