Objective adjustment: self-befoolery + 3 more

Baba

Objective adjustment: self-befoolery

Namaskar,

Baba’s grand tenet of “subject approach through objective adjustment” is a unique and revolutionary teaching, but is sadly often misunderstood - and in some cases even misused. First let’s gain a clearer understanding of this guideline and then investigate how it is being misapplied by some nowadays.

(A) Subjective approach means that the purpose of life is for realising Parama Purusa. That is the chief and only aim: attaining Him. To that end, all one’s thoughts and works throughout the day are for the sole intention of spiritual advancement.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(B) Objective adjustment means that all one does in the mundane world should be in support of one’s subjective approach. For instance, the food one takes should be 100% sentient as that will aid one on the path of sadhana; it will help one progress along the path of supreme subjectivity. Taking rajasik, and especially tamasik food, will derail one’s movement on the path of God realisation.

(C) The main equation is that one’s objective adjustment should increase one’s speed along the path of subjective approach. It should make one’s journey faster towards the Supreme Entity. That is the proper application of objective adjustment as it leads to one’s final liberation.

(D) In contrast, if one’s objective adjustment decreases or retards one’s speed along the path of subjective approach, then one is involved in negative pratisaincara. That is slowing down one’s journey towards the Cosmic Entity, i.e. going in reverse gear. If one is smoking, stealing, engrossed in sensual lust etc, then that will hamper one’s progress. That is not objective adjustment, rather it is gross indulgence.

(E) One’s adjustment with the world should always be aligned with the Supreme Goal and make the journey faster unto Him. One’s objective adjustment should never undermine one’s movement on the path of subjective approach, i.e. realising Him.

A few case examples

The following case examples are given with the idea in mind that one’s worldly dealings should reflect proper objective adjustment, i.e. actions that hasten one’s journey towards the Supreme.

If someone engages in pornography then that is not objective adjustment as it degrades the mind and pushes one farther from the goal, i.e. the Cosmic Entity.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

If one resorts to drinking alcohol and opens a wine shop then that is not objective adjustment as this crude intoxication and sinful earning retards one’s movement on the path of supreme subjectivity.

If one falls into the rut of cronyism or groupism then those dealings are not in concert with objective adjustment as those factional activities divert one away from the Supreme Entity, Parama Purusa.

If one chases after name and fame then that way of living cannot be called objective adjustment as those selfish and small-minded pursuits undermine one’s ability to go close to Taraka Brahma, rather one drifts endlessly away from Him.

An action only comes within the umbrella of objective adjustment when it hastens one’s journey unto Him. Doing longer sadhana, following Sixteen Points, serving others, preaching the ideology, and engaging in all sorts of pure, selfless, and virtuous deeds are all within the scope of objective adjustment as they lead one closer to the Supreme Entity.

How it is misunderstood or misused nowadays

Nowadays, those who fail to abide by the tenet of subjective approach vs objective adjustment fall in one of two categories:

(#1) Genuinely confused: These naive people simply do not understand Baba’s teaching of “subjective approach through objective adjustment.” Instead of ensuring that their day to day dealings are in concert with and accelerate their journey on the path of supreme subjectivity, they get lost in the mire of the prevailing mundane values etc. For instance, if they go to a relative’s house during the holidays then in the name of objective adjustment they may eat onion and garlic, or partake in the feast while those around them eat turkey etc. Or if one is busy and time is short, then in the name of objective adjustment the first elements one cuts from their routine are sadhana and asanas. Such persons are not well established on the path of Sixteen Points and spirituality. Rather they are just half-sadhakas or half-margiis. They compromise on points of dharma at every turn, naively thinking that that is what is meant by objective adjustment. Due to their naivete and misunderstanding they fall far from the path, sadly enough.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(#2) Conniving mentality: These persons are cunning to the bone. They know the difference between right and wrong; and, they understand the spirit of “subjective approach through objective adjustment”. But, to satisfy their lustful, greedy desires, they plunge themselves into gross sensuality and materialism, and then cunningly justify that they are only doing this because of “objective adjustment”. A classic example of this is those avadhutas who gossip with, hug, tease, and massage etc members of the opposite sex and then openly proclaim that they are only doing this to “adjust” with the local culture. With their tall talks and haughty demeanor, they befool others in the name of “subjective approach through objective adjustment”. In their heart of hearts they know what they are doing is not objective adjustment, but using their guile and wily manner, they preach their bogus philosophy so they can continue to indulge in their degraded way of life.

Conclusion

Sadguru Baba’s dharmic teaching of “subjective approach through objective adjustment” is the ideal method for leading a spiritual life. In the past, seekers were never given the right guidance of how to live on this earth as a sadhaka. And in the end, they fell victim to various dogmas or harmful ways. Whereas, the teachings of Ananda Marga shine a bright light and present the exact way to proceed along the path of supreme fulfillment. First and foremost, there must never be any compromise on spiritual values; that is what is meant by subjective approach. Secondly, those actions are consistent with objective adjustment if they hasten one’s journey towards the final goal, Parama Purusa. With this perfect formula of “subjective approach through objective adjustment”, one is sure to be successful, by His grace.

In Him,
Vibhuti

~ In-depth study ~

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “You are all human beings. You are all dignified human beings. Forget all fissiparous tendencies that sometimes function within human mind. Remember, you are the loving children of the Parama Puruśa, and your goal is the Parama Puruśa. Your goal is the Supreme Entity. Yours is a subjective approach through objective adjustment. Your movement is towards the Supreme Entity. But while moving towards the Supreme Entity, you are to do all your worldly duties in social, economic and all other spheres. That is, your hands should be engaged in worldly duties, and your mind moving towards the Supreme Entity.” (1)

Harmful ways of the past => Why phrase came into existence

Although the aspect of subjective approach was embraced by certain eastern religions, their overall method was filled with dogma as they ignored the world. This is best evidenced by Shankaracarya’s dogmatic teaching of maya vada, or illusion theory. Those followers did not accept the world as something real. And, in result, they were completely impractical, and instead of advancing along the path of spirituality they ended up harming themselves. For instance, they would stand on one leg in the freezing, cold water all night long in hopes of gaining virtue. But during that time of torture in torment, they did not think about the Supreme, just their were focused on their own pain and suffering. And when they emerged from their water in the morning their nerves and muscles were harmed. Nothing was gained; there was only loss.

Very close to You

"A'ndha're tumi ele, a'loy bhariya' dile..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3057)

Purport:

Baba, My Parama Purusa, You have appeared in this deep darkness and blessed me. By Your holy advent, everything has become filled with Your venerable aura and effulgence. By Your causeless grace, all my dirt, staticity, and stains were removed in a flash. Amazingly, the Cimmerian blackness has been instantly transformed into luminescence by Your august presence.

Baba, Supreme Entity, the clusters of clouds of confusion and quandary which enveloped my life for ages were blown away in an instant by Your momentum of spiritual charm. Baba, by this way, You have magically removed all my burdens and pains and pulled me very close to You, in Your extreme proximity. How can I think I am ever neglected? You filled my heart with bhakti so no dilemmas remained - they all vanished. You have graciously appeared in this gloomy murkiness to save me.

My Supreme Guide, knowing that You are always along with me close by, I am never alone. You are lovingly taking care of everything. I am always surrounded by You; You are with me. Even knowing thus, I have cried for You. Baba, now I see You before me. Today You made me forget those days of weeping for You by giving me Your darshan. Now I understand that by Your endless compassion: I am never without You.

Baba, You have come to me in this depressing darkness...

Take the fast track

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Suppose you have incurred a loan of a thousand rupees. If you repay the loan in monthly instalments of one rupee it will take you a thousand months to clear the loan. One rupee being such a small amount, this will hardly cause any suffering at all. But if you want to free yourself from the debt quickly, you will have to pay a larger amount every month, which will obviously cause more suffering. Likewise, if one does not feel the need to be freed of one’s reactive momenta quickly, one can undergo less affliction, but then one may have to wait ten or twenty lives to exhaust all the reactive momenta. Moreover, within those ten or twenty lives one will probably undergo psychic degeneration, and due to one’s mean actions imbibe new reactive momenta.” (1)

Meditation checklist + 2 more

Baba
Meditation checklist

Namaskár,

Sadguru Bábá says, "Mokśa kárańasamagryám bhaktireva gariyasii."

Meaning: "Bhakti is the best way to mokśa or salvation, the approach of bhakti is the best." (1)

Following is the sequence for a better, more spiritually-charged sadhana practice:

#1: Be sure the stomach is empty.

#2: Guru mantra.

#3: Do half-bath or full bath.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

#4: Make sure that both nostrils are equal or that the left nostril is dominant. If it is not, then try to switch it. (See note 7 appended below.)

#5: Shasháuṋgásana (hare pose): a few rounds

#6: Shavásana (corpse posture): brief

#7: Sing Prabhát Saḿgiita = minimum one song which you understand the meaning, and which soothes the mental feelings, emotions, and awakens a sense of bhakti.

#8: Sing kiirtana loudly and dance lalita marmika = minimum ten minutes, with the feeling that, “Only I and my Lord are present.”

#9: Saśťauṋga prańáma = with full posture.

#10: Diipanii means ‘torch’ i.e. three shuddhis. (See note 3 appended below.)

#10a: Bhútashuddhi = as taught by your ácárya
#10b: Ásanashuddhi = as taught by your ácárya
#10c: Cittashuddhi = as taught by your ácáryahttps://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

#11: Mantra caetanya means understanding the meaning of iśťa mantra and dhyána mantra. (See note 4a & 4b appended below.)

#12: Generate longing or bhakti for Parama Puruśa that, “I must get Him.”

#13: Mantrágháta = Repetition of the mantra with meaning, longing, and bhakti to become one with Parama Puruśa. Practice as long as you can.

#14: Strong, unwavering, pointed determination that, “I must become one with Him.”

* * * And after finishing long iishvara prańidhána  * * *

#15: Other various lessons

#16: Guru Pújá (varńárghyadána, pratyáhára, offering colors of the mind). Offer colored lotus in shape, color, smell, taste, and touch of disturbance in recent sadhana.

#17: Saśťauṋga prańáma
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

Sadhana is the main endeavour of human life. And on the path of sadhana, the arousal of bhakti is absolutely necessary. This longing is a highly significant aspect and the most important step of our sadhana practice. If one does everything but this point is lacking then sadhana will be futile or dry. And if the arousal of bhakti is done successfully then one can realise Him, by His grace.

Namaskár,
In Him
Satyadraśťá

Note 1: The points #10 - #13 are to be applied in both 1st and 6th lessons equally.

Note 2: Regarding points #7 & #8, only listening to Prabhat Samgiita or kiirtana is not sufficient as that will not bring about the desired result. Rather one should sing Prabhat Samgiita and kiirtana with one’s full heart. By singing the mind gets more involved in comparison to just listening.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Key points on sadhana

Note 3: Ananda Marga philosophy guides us,

“Diipa jiṋánaḿ yato dadyát kuryát pápakśayam tatah;
Tasmátdiikśeti sá proktá sarvatantrasya sammatá.”

“One must be initiated according to the prescribed system. Only then will the mantra be effective. This will be clear to those practising Ananda Marga meditation.” (2)

Note 4a: Ananda Marga ideology says,

“Caetanya rahitáh mantráh proktavarńástu kevalam;
Phalaḿ naeva prayacchanti lakśa kot́i japaerapi.” (3)

Note 4b: Ananda Marga philosophy teaches us, “If you repeat ‘Krśńa, Krśńa’ – a parrot can also do that! Can that bring about any spiritual progress? Never – because there is no ideation on the meaning. It is mantra devoid of caetanya. So one has to ideate. It is through ideation that spiritual elevation is possible.” (4)

Without love for Him, sádhaná is meaningless

Note 5: Ananda Marga ideology guides us, ““Dhyána” comes from the root verb “dhae,” which means to withdraw the mental propensities and to goad them towards Him. So, if people practice all these things without having love for the Supreme, they won’t be able to get anything. But, if there is an iota of love, if there is a wee bit of love, they gain everything. Only those intelligent people who know this – even if if they are not efficient or proficient in the sphere of dharma; even if they are not efficient in doing japa kriyá; even if they know nothing regarding yoga; even if they know nothing regarding celestial and extra-celestial knowledge; even if they do not understand guru bhakti; even if they do not understand the inner spirit of japa; even if they do not know jiṋána – can get everything if the spirit behind this idea of loving the Supreme is just in a rudimental phase.” (5)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “I love you, not for myself. I love you because I want my love to give you pleasure. So, in that last, final stage, the devotee’s only wish is to give Him pleasure.” (6)

Story of Lord Buddha

Note 6:  Ananda Marga ideology says, “The story goes that Lord Buddha practiced sádhaná for a long time, but still did not attain the final goal. So when he sat down the second time, he made a firm determination:”

“Ihásane shuśyatu me shariiraḿ
Tvagasthimáḿsaḿ pralayaiṋca yátu
Aprápya bodhiḿ bahukalpadulabháḿ
Naevásanat káyamatashcaliśyate.”

“Unless I attain the supreme height of enlightenment, I won’t move an inch from this posture, even if my body withers, and my bones, flesh and skin are destroyed.” (7)

Being a sadvipra

Ananda Marga ideology states, "How will sadvipras be created? They will be created in the continued endeavour to expand the self. By reciting holy scriptures or by acquiring a few Saḿskrta titles, one cannot succeed in spiritual pursuit. Brahma does not care who is of noble descent or high caste. The important thing is to continue sádhaná. One’s life can only be properly evaluated in the light of that struggle." (1)

Note: In His above guideline, Baba instructs us that sadvipras can only be created through their deep pursuit of sadhana. Educational attainment, scriptural degrees, and tattvikaship, acaryaship, or purodhaship have no bearing on becoming a sadvipra. Rather, such so-called accolades are a distraction and an impediment to one’s progress on the path of spirituality because they pollute the mind with vanity. So every aspirant should remain strict in their sadhana. That is the only way to get success in spiritual life and become a sadvipra.

Spirit of Ananda Purnima + 4 more

Baba
Spirit of Ananda Purnima

Namaskar,

One of the most wonderful days of the year for Ananda Margiis all across the globe is Ananda Purnima (01 May 2026). This is perhaps the most joyous and charming festival that we have. For this is the time when our Beloved Baba has taken advent on this earth as Mahasambhuti to shower us in His divine love. Ananda Purnima marks the occasion when He has taken the firm determination to infuse dynamism into our individual and collective bodies. It is the time when He has graciously come and made the world new all over again by bestowing upon us a new ideology and a new way of living.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In turn, it is also a time - a day - when we should take a strong commitment to do more to serve and please Him and incorporate more of Ananda Marga into our own lives. This is one of the very blissful ways to think about our Ananda Purnima festival. And as we all know this most charming festival is soon upon us.

A time to shake off the old

As we live our lives, there is a tendency for things to become dreary and boring. It can happen to anyone. Because as colourful and exciting as this world is, still we get bogged down in our daily routines: Go to work; come home from work; take care of children; talk with friends; do sadhana; cook food and eat; go to sleep etc. Indeed, if we are not careful even our sadhana can become rote and mechanical. In that way, it can seem like we are doing the same thing day in and day out.

Firstly then this magnificent festival day of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima is a time to rid life of any dreary quality and invite a sense of wonder and vitality. That is one of the main characteristics of our festivals (utsava) in Ananda Marga.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy explains, "People often feel bored with their humdrum lives, with their mechanical routines; thus a fresh start must be created through [utsava] festivals...“Ut” means “above” and “sava” means “[[to take]] birth”; so utsava means “an occasion which gives human beings fresh inspiration to live a new life.” When people become tired and uninspired, when they can no longer look towards the future with hope, when their colourful dreams are shattered, at that time the sweetness of a festival brings new joy and vigour in life. Thus in individual and collective life, the importance of festivals is tremendous. One should always remember that festivals should be such that all can take part in them without any ostentatious display of wealth, and with an upsurge of their life force. And these festivals should be conducted in such a way that people take part in them from a spontaneous inner urge. I hope that you will make such arrangements so that all are attracted towards your festivals which will be more and more charming – and this will bring about your collective welfare." (1)

This coming day of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima' is a time to break the cyclic repetition of mundane life and bring in an entire new freshness to our existence.

Leave shortcomings behind

So this festival of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima' is a time for us to evaluate our course and commit to incorporating more of His divine ideas into our lives. This is the duty of each and every sadhaka. It is a time for us to leave our shortcomings behind and move forward on the divine path. That is one way to think of this wonderful occasion of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima'.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

A life full of exuberance

Baba has lovingly brought us onto the path of realisation and service; He has infused within us the desire to do something great in life. As His disciples, on this holy occasion of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima', we should take the determination to live a life that is full of His Sixteen Points - overcoming all degrading tendencies - and become true mediums of His teachings.

Here is one Ananda Vanii to reflect upon on this most blissful upcoming event of A'nanda Pu'rn'ima'....

Ananda Vanii #58 says, “All the beings of this universe are the kith and kin of one another. No one is despicable. All are equally respectable and entitled to equal love and affection. No problem is to be ignored as an individual or group affair. Every problem is to be considered as the collective problem of universal humanity and is to be resolved collectively and resolved it must be. Let it be the vocal panorama of the newer world of today – the continuous musical notes behind the movement of Neohumanism.” (2)

Happy upcoming Ananda Pu'rn'ima' to all my brothers and sisters!

Baba is so gracious!

Namaskar,
In Him,
Brahmajinana Deva

A time to be more strict in Sixteen Points

The standard protocol of Ananda Marga is not to wait for any holy occasion to give up any bad habits - rather all bad habits should be rectified immediately. But if for some reason one is still troubled by bad habits on Ananda Purnima then that is the occasion to take a firm stand and give up any remaining degrading habits.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So this coming A'nanda Pu'rn'ima' day, we may ask ourselves, 'What type of determination should I take?'

Our determination will be based on blessedness and benevolence - on how to bring more of His teachings of Sixteen Points into our lives. For some who are not so strict in fasting, then this may be a time to commit to that practice. For those who need to be more regular in their asana practice, they might commit more to that. Depending on the person, the type of determination may take a different shape - a different form. But the spirit will be the same: To please Baba by further advancing along the path of spirituality, by His grace and His grace alone. Surely we will be successful.

Once again, bear in mind that the standard protocol of Ananda Marga is not to wait for any holy occasion to give up any bad habits - rather all bad habits should be rectified immediately. But if for some reason one is still troubled by bad habits on Ananda Purnima then that is the occasion to take a firm stand and give up any remaining degrading habits.

Family name

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Casteism is a burden on the Hindu society. All the year round they preach casteism but on the polling days they decry it. This is wholly undesirable. It is better to avoid all titles. Titles signify the caste. If casteism is to be wiped out, it is incumbent to discard the titles. It is commendable if everyone adopts uniformity on title – Deva *. Persons using a particular word more often will influence their minds with the meaning of that word. People are reluctant to use the word dása because this word signifies slavery. Whenever the so-called low caste people catch an opportunity, they declare themselves as belonging to the so-called elevated caste, etc. It is an ideal to become deva and for this reason Deva title should be adopted." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Titles of the present society have undergone considerable changes during the past fifty years, the cause being that everyone aspires to pertain to an elevated caste. The so-called Shúdras also use the sacred thread. This is only an effort towards the concealment of one’s identity. By this means, they conceal only their disregarded status. This is to be regretted. It is consequent on social debility that they harbour the desire for changes in their situations. It is out and out purposeless to convene All-India Conferences or particular castes. All of them desire to assert and establish their rights. This is simply a misuses of energy and money." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The consent of those embraced must be sought for before renaming them in Saḿskrta. Language has got nothing to do with religion and as such, there is no reason for anybody depreciating the use of Saḿskrta. In this connection it may be added that the great emperor Aurangzeb used the term sudhárasa (juice of nectar) for mango (original Saḿskrta term for mango is ámra) and saddharma for Islam." (1)

So many areas of the globe are affected by caste, race, and communal feeling. Here above Baba gives the perfect antidote and solution to such narrow-minded and harmful thinking.

* Note: The title Deva should be suffixed to males and the suffix Devii should be suffixed to females.

Just don’t ask for...

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Suppose a man wants to be a king. In the next life he may be born into the household of a poor man whose surname is 'Raja' (king). He wanted to be a raja (king) and he became one! One must be very cautious before wishing for anything. In this regard there is a nice story. Once a certain person asked Shiva to grant him the boon of immortality. Shiva told him, 'It's impossible to become immortal. You should think more intelligently before asking anything.' So the man said, 'Alright, please grant me the boon that I will never die at night or during the day.' He died in the evening! In fact, the best thing is not to ask Parama Purus'a for anything." (1)

Note: First thing is that it is best not to ask mundane things from Parama Purusa because one does not know what is going to happen even after one second - whether one will survive or die. In that case, asking for something will be useless as we ourselves do not know our future needs. That is why one should say, "O' Parama Purusa, please act according to Your wish." Finally, if one has so much desire to ask something from Parama Purusa, then the only thing one should ask for is parabhakti - the highest devotion.

Heartless claim by capitalists

Prout philosophy states, "The ambition to become rich by exploiting others is a type of psychic disease. In fact, if the infinite longing of the human mind does not find the proper path leading to psychic and spiritual fulfilment, it becomes engaged in accumulating excessive physical wealth by depriving others. If any member of a joint family appropriates food from the family food store by using physical or intellectual force, he or she becomes the cause of misery to others. Similarly, when capitalists declare, “We have amassed wealth by our talent and labour. If others have the capacity and diligence, let them also do the same; nobody prevents them,” they do not care to realize that the volume of commodities on the earth is limited, whereas the requirement is common to all. Excessive individual affluence, in most cases, deprives others of the minimum requirements of life." (1)

FROM 2018
Ananda Purnima: Which day is proper

Namaskar,

This year [2018] Ananda Purnima falls on the 30th of April in India. And on 30th April, B group always organizes a protest against the Calcutta massacre of Bijon setu. For their own convenience, they changed the date of the Ananda Purnima celebration, giving their annual protest priority instead.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So here in India, Ananda Purnima is on April 30th, and that day B group is feeling difficulty due to it being the date of their procession. For their convenience they changed the date of Ananda Purnima celebration to the following day, 1st May. Or in some areas, it is observed one day early, means 29th April. The main priority of the leaders of B group is the Bijon setu massacre protest on 30th April. --Not Ananda Purnima. This is their standard of bhakti and reverence to Guru.

In the past also it has been seen that if Diipavali Festival falls on 21st October, or between 21st - 26th October, then B group skips Diipavali Festival which is given in Caryacarya. And in place of that, they go on engrossed in their dogma of MPD. This is their standard of bhakti and reverence to Guru.

By these above two examples, it is clear that something is missing in their heart.

In the oriental system, the day begins with the sunrise, and is calculated as lasting from sunrise to sunrise. The lunar day is also calculated according to the lunar date present at the time of sunrise. For example, if it is Purnima at the time of sunrise, then that entire day will be treated as being Purnima. And in any Ananda Marga festival, that calculation is accepted. This system is approved by Baba.

Exclusively in our Ananda Marga fasting system, the day where the eleventh moon is present for more time, is announced as the day of Ekadashii. Indeed, in AM the day of any lunar festival is calculated in accordance with the sunrise. In accordance with this system, Ananda Purnima occurs on 30th April. And Baba approves of this very system. Indeed, this very system of oriental calculation of the date is described here in Ananda Marga ideology.
