How to save oneself from the burden of memories + 4 more

How to save oneself from the burden of memories

Namaskar,

A mother who lost her baby 50 years ago becomes sad when she remembers that baby today. So when any negative or painful memory comes into the mind then one should divert the mind away from that memory. Here the chief concern is over-indulging in those old memories. People do not remember ordinary happenings from the past. Just they remember the extremes: both good and bad. And they think again, and again, and again, on those points. Without any plan, those memories recur in the mind - but especially the bad memories. And those bad memories harass the individual and bring sadness. Those are very detrimental. I recall one person I knew who lost his wife to cancer and could not forget the memory of his wife, and within two years he also died.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Bad memories forcefully drag you back

In contrast, generally, regardless of how many good things happen in life, those good memories will not come again and again in the mind and chase you down. Nor do they keep you awake at night. Mostly they come when in the company of others and you are recounting those good times. And that itself is a waste of time. Then one is living in reverse gear. That is the worst; they are just wasting time and inflating the ego thinking about one’s greatness. Ultimately, it is not good.

The more you dwell in the past the more you are not moving forward. Human life is short. I can remember not far back when I was a small child and now the number of years I have lived I will not live that far into the future. Then I can gauge how short life is. Although, we are not sure about the future, even then wasting the time caught up in old memories is not good. That is Guru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji’s teachings: Get rid of old memories, and you will be very happy.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Worldly memory is bad

There are some advanced Alzheimer's patients who have no memory. Then they are very happy. But that is a disease. Here I am talking about sadhakas using their mental efforts to both wipe away old memories and not unnecessarily worry about the future. There are three bondages: (a) old memories of good events, (b) old memories of bad times, and (c) and anguish over the future. All three are bad. If one can overcome these three bondages, they can utilise their life beautifully and experience an abundance of happiness. There will not be any question of misery. And that is what everyone wants.

Unfortunately, most pass their days remembering their old pains and past glories: such as how they were mistreated, or how they failed in a particular manner, or how they scored three goals in a football match 40 years ago, or how they became class president in high school, or so many other bad and good things from days bygone. These do not contribute to one's progress as human beings or sadhakas. They make the mind preoccupied and heavy. In that case, one cannot remember the Divine Entity, Parama Purusa. Yet people churn these events in their mind again and again.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

That is why one should be aware about the types of things they are remembering. Contrary to materialistic living where people move from one whim to the next, the life of every sadhaka is marked by a definite goal: Parama Purusa. And to reach unto Him, so many steps are required, as well as His divine grace.

What to forget & what to remember

Here below Baba guides us how one of the key factors for spiritual attainment is right memory - samyak smrti, as this keeps the mind light and burden-free.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now samyak smrti is remembering whatever is congenial to the spirit of never-ending human progress, and other items you may forget. Suppose a man unnecessarily wounded your sentiment. If you remember it you will be suffering from internal pain, mental agony. Try to forget it. It is better to forget it. If you want peace, you should forget it. But suppose you have learned something good. You should retain it. Those items coming within the second scope, that is, the scope of retention, are samyak smrti. And the best thing that you must always try to retain within the scope of your smrti, within the periphery of your smrti, is the name of Parama Puruśa, is the idea of Parama Puruśa. You must not forget it even for a single moment." (1)

Baba guides us that we should forget about those events that cause torment and pain, and worldly joy. Remembering those events over and over again is not conducive for spiritual unfolding. Then Baba guides us that spiritual teachings should be remembered. And Baba culminates the matter by guiding us that the very best thing to remember is Parama Purusa. Parama Purusa should be the focal point - that is proper memory.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, “A human being’s burden grows along with the past, the present and the future. For example, perhaps you are thinking: once you were eating rich, delicious and costly foods such as háluyápuri, murg-mashallam, namkiin poláo – this is all the burden of the past. Similarly, today you will eat this and that, you will wear such and such, afterwards you will go to your friend's house and they will ask you about what you are wearing – this is the burden of the present. In the same way, you will earn money in the future by doing business, become rich and gain esteem in the society – this is the burden of the future. Buddha warned his mendicants who were thirsty for liberation: O mendicants, lighten the burden that lies before you.” (2)

Keeping the mind pure to receive His call

Here below Baba unveils the special technique for keeping the mind light whereby it can move speedily unto Supreme Self.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "When you are to move fast, your mind should be light; if the mind is heavy it will not be able to move fast. What makes the mind heavy? So many impurities of thought...

Muinca pure muinca pacchata majjhe muinca bhabassa pa'ragu'

    [Remove all the water from the boat of your body;
being free from water, it will become very light.]

Ananda Marga ideology says, “You should make your mind light. You should give up all worldly thoughts, all base thoughts, all depraving thoughts, and make yourself light.” To make oneself light means to free oneself from impurities. A magnet can easily attract a piece of iron, but if that piece of iron is full of impurities, that very magnet may not be able to attract that iron. So the Supreme Self, Supreme Lord, is always attracting you, but because of your heaviness due to worldly impurities, you are not being attracted by Him." (3)

If one is hindered by both good and bad memories then remembering Parama Purusa will be extremely difficult. We are to get rid of those old, worn-out memories and think only about Him. The more we remember events of old the more readily they come back into the mind - even uncalled for, unintentionally. In contrast, the more one ideates on Him, the more we are unshackled by worldly dealings - instead it is His remembrance that enters and remains in the mind, by His grace.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So that is the magic formula for keeping the mind light. Leave worldly dealings aside, and instead fill the mind with His thought. To this end both auto-suggestion (mantra japa etc) and outer suggestion (satsaunga, reading His discourses etc) are absolutely integral.

Conclusion

The aim of every sadhaka is to always remember Baba - only then can one cross the ocean of samskara and reach unto Him. Yet to cross the ocean of samskara one must make the mind light and free by remembering Him and staying under His divine shelter. One cannot cross that ocean if one is weighed down by all kinds of worries from the past, or fears about the future. Even remembering one's glories are not helpful in crossing that ocean of samskara. All such memories are an impediment and shackle us. The mind should be pure and light so it can easily focus on the Supreme.

If one sits and starts thinking that, “I will not think about old memories.” That will not do. Or if one confides in their friends everyday that, “I will not think about my son who died 30 years back.” But that means they are remembering their deceased son everyday and harming themselves. Then what is the way? When that type of bad memory comes then swiftly divert the mind towards Parama Purusa. Or if you cannot do that then think about a social service project. That is why it is important for sadhakas to keep busy in serving others. Then bad memories will not drag you back. Best is to think about Parama Purusa or think about serving Parama Purusa in the form of living beings. Then your mind will be engaged in the proper direction.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Rupatiita

History is important so looking back and having a quick glance at the positive and negative events is helpful for forward movement. That prevents one from making the same mistake again. But plunging oneself in the history of the past is bad.

Stay within Your shelter

“Toma're a'mi ceyechi loka'laye naya mana nilaye, Ma'nasa-deule ta'i sa'jiyechi…” (Prabhat Samgiita #4083)

Purport

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, I want to see and receive You, but not somewhere externally. I want to have You in the core of my heart - in a very deep and intimate way. I decorated my inner temple in my mind beautifully solely for You.

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, my Dearmost, my Everything, my Beloved, I am offering You my countless salutations, again and again. I know this essence in the mortal world that You are creation, You are sustenance, and You are the ultimate goal.

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, when there was nothing, You were there. You would also remain when nothing will remain. All would stay within Your shelter in seed form, from a blade of grass to the cosmos all are dancing with the rhythm of your ankle bell...

Two mudras to prevent & cure diseases

These two mudras - uddayan mudra and utksepa mudra - are very important for all-round health as they serve as prevention and treatment for numerous diseases. In the Ananda Marga Yogic Treatments book, these two mudras are pervasively used. So all should know how to practice these mudras - i.e. when to inhale and when to exhale etc. Actually they are so basic, there is no need to ask any acarya etc. The instructions are printed in Caryacarya part 3 for all to see. Everyone has access to this knowledge. People should therefore take it upon themselves to acquire the foundational knowledge of basic Ananda Marga practices, like these two important mudras.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Ud́d́ayana mudrá: Standing, place the hands above the knees and bend forward a little. Gradually breathe out, to a state of complete exhalation. Keeping the breath out, draw the abdomen and lower abdomen inward as hard as possible, to touch the spine. Maintain this position for eight seconds. Then gradually inhale fully. Practise eight times.” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Utkśepa Mudrá: This mudrá should be practised in bed immediately upon waking. While lying on the back, one should flex both the arms and legs, bringing them over the chest, and then return them immediately to the extended position. After doing this three or four times, sit up in bed and drink a glass of cold water without allowing the water to touch the teeth. After this you should expose the navel area to the air, and walk up and down in this way for some time in the open air.” (2)

Some of our Wts do not regularly study Guru's books so they end up teaching margiis the wrong thing, or neglect to teach them the right thing. Best is for every Ananda Margii to study Guru's teachings directly. Not studying and just depending on acaryas for basic elements will not yield a proper result. Suppose you ask an acarya and they do not know and give a false answer instead, then the patient will be harmed.

...will continue forever

Prout philosophy states, "The fight between vidyá and avidyá will go on forever; so the necessity of more or less police and military will also go on forever. But then, when the world government is established, this necessity will decrease. As there is always fight between vidyá and avidyá, more or less class struggle, too, will continue forever. Hence those who day-dream that, after establishing a classless society, they will be able to enjoy a sound slumber with their arms and legs outstretched, will be totally disappointed." (1)

Fundamentals of vivaha

This following quote is well-explained and shows how marriage is only between a male and a female and not two people of the same gender. Since the inception of marriage during Lord Shiva's time, marriage has been between a man and a woman. And that is what Baba has approved for AMPS. So when the point of same sex marriage is raised then one should give Baba's teaching that it is always between a man and a woman - not between a man and a dog etc. In the west, some so-called open-minded people are confused and are always try and bring some argument in favour of gay marriage, but according to the purview of Ananda Marga philosophy, their logic has no legs to stand upon.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "He [Lord Shiva] declared that women must be kalatra, which means that women must discharge their obligations to their husbands and their children in such a way that the latter will not have the least difficulty."
"Those who accepted this new arrangement were declared married, and the other members of their society would be witnesses to the marriage ceremony, to bless the newly-married couple and pledge their cooperation to them. The Sanskrit equivalent for marriage is viváha (vi – vah + ghaiṋ): it means, after the ceremony, the man and woman can no longer live as libertines or as irresponsible so-called family people. They have to discharge their full obligations as bharttá and kalatra, responsible husband and responsible wife." (1)

High bar of being teacher + 3 more

Baba
High bar of being teacher

Namaskar,

In Baba's system of tantric education, the teacher’s role is absolutely central to student success. The teacher is highly regarded for their skill and responsibility, and thus must be of impeccable character and exemplary conduct. Remember, the students are not there just to learn a particular course of study or given subject material, but to emulate the teacher’s conduct on all levels of life and become great moralists, sadvipras, and tantrikas in society.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Teachers: supreme character & exemplary conduct

Here, below, are a few of Baba's guidelines which clearly state that teachers must fully exemplify their ideal in their day to day living:

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The first and most important factor is to select teachers carefully. Those who have the required academic qualifications do not have an automatic right to become teachers. Teachers must possess such qualities as strength of character, righteousness, sense of social service, unselfishness, an inspiring personality and leadership. They are the preceptors of society, and that is why it is not possible for everyone to do this job." (1)

By Sadguru Baba’s above guidelines, it is evident that in our tantric system teachers must be strict moralists and sterling examples of AM ideals. These are two of the key components to being a proper teacher. So first and foremost is their character. Then of course they must be knowledgeable about the subject material and have the requisite patience, skill, and insight to impart that knowledge to others. But it all starts with having a teacher who is firmly grounded in yama and niyama and committed to spiritual practices.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Worldly qualifications not enough

In our tantric system of education, mundane educational qualifications and certificates alone are not enough to make one a proper teacher. Rather, ideal conduct is the main criterion. This is the foundation of AM philosophy and our tantric cult, and teachers must be living embodiments of those ideals. So if any teacher exhibits any slackness in this regard they must be rectified at the earliest - such slackness will not be tolerated, what to speak of any type of deviant and derelict behaviour like smoking, drinking, eating meat, and sexual dealings. Such gross contraventions of our moral code may be grounds for immediate termination etc. Here below Baba explains the consequences of indisciplined behaviour on the part of teachers.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “There are also teachers who, after discussing the abuses and evils of intoxicants in the classroom, immediately go outside and start smoking. This sets an extremely bad example. If the teachers would just use intoxicants, without saying anything about them, it might not be so bad. But this approach naturally encourages the students to be undisciplined. They will think that the use of such things must be enjoyable, and that their teachers deprive them so that they can enjoy them alone.” (2)

So regardless of whatever worldly qualification a person has, if their conduct is poor, then in our AM society that person will not be granted a glorified position such as that of teacher. They will first have to rectify their conduct. This is a completely unique aspect of our AM system of education etc, whereas in materialistic societies such a standard is miserably lacking as all sorts of debauched people hold positions of great power and respect.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Tantric measuring rod

In our tantric culture, good conduct is the starting point. Without proper conduct, one cannot move even a single step forward on the path of liberation and service to humanity. Anyone who does not have good conduct cannot be regarded or accepted as a teacher of AM spiritual philosophy or social philosophy. Hence, as Ananda Margiis, we have to follow our tantric philosophy and use that measuring rod to analyze each and every circumstance.

Giving the post of AM teacher to any Shyam or Ram, regardless of their character and conduct, will not bode well. What to speak of not enabling our sublime ideology to be taught in the proper way, there will be controversy and scandal. That is why 'A Guide to Human Conduct', the first book of AM, emphasizes that we are to follow good conduct from the very beginning.

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "It is therefore emphasized that even before commencing sadhana one must follow moral principles strictly. Those who do not follow this should not follow the path of sadhana; otherwise, they will bring about their own harm and that of others." (3)

And Baba warns us that those whose conduct is not good should not be given positions of leadership.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Those not established in yama-niyama should not get the opportunity to assume leadership.” (4)

Adherence to moral principles is essential for becoming a teacher in our tantric system of education. Those unable to follow those principles should not be given the distinguished role of teacher. Not only will they harm themselves, they will also be the cause of disaster in society. The foundational point is our tantric culture is based on ideal conduct.

Conclusion

Ultimately, by remaining firm in our tantric traditions of ideal conduct, our AM society will certainly rise up, and our teachers of AM spiritual philosophy or social philosophy will truly be the guiding light for the entire humanity.

In Him,
Srs’t’ikarta’

Unfit to become

Sadly, there are several examples in our AM society where some so-called learned people were given the elevated status of teacher, yet they were clearly unfit for the post due to: (a) extramarital affairs / sexual misconduct; (b) thievery; (c) bribery; (d) debauched habits of any sort etc. In all those cases, there was a horrible fallout.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So educational qualifications and book knowledge of AM philosophy alone are not sufficient. If in their personal lives, they have any black spot or weakness - or are following a degraded lifestyle - they cannot be a teacher. Indeed, those not of proper character can never lead humanity and should not be allowed to become teachers, as they will ruin themselves and drag society into the depths of darkness.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Those who proceed to build a benevolent society, without having undergone meticulous self-preparation and self-discipline themselves, will bring about not only their own downfall but they will lead the whole of humanity to disaster as well. They will be incapable of implicitly trusting the very people for whom they are to work. At the outset they may exert a little to attain for themselves some requisite qualifications of leadership...[but] their work is doomed to failure in the end if they lack sadhana or spiritual practice." Psychology of abandoning one group & joining another

This below quote is for those Hindus who got frustrated with Hinduism and joined Islam, or any margii / WT who left one group and joined another. To save themselves from jackals, they jumped into the fire. Best is to be a neo-humanist and leave all forms of groupism.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Due to the many shortcomings in one religion and its exploitation of so-called lower caste people, many of these so-called low caste people left that religion and accepted another. When people leave their religion for no significant reason and accept another religion which suffers from ideological vacuum or is even inferior to the religion which they previously followed, they develop hysterical behaviour. They start excessively doing those things which were once prohibited to them by their previous religion. So we find that the person who has converted to another religion takes more beef than a normal member of that religion. This type of behaviour cannot be found in those who had ideologically accepted that religion.” (1)

Why violence in Islam

In the following teaching, Sadguru Baba is indirectly talking about Islam where music, dance, drama and all such forms of artistic expression are not allowed. Due to the prohibition of music etc, strict Islamic followers become severely psychically diseased and ultimately very brutal and cruel. They become absolutely ruthless. So, we should take a lesson from this and encourage aesthetic science wherever we get the opportunity. In result, the finer human senses of love and compassion will develop for fellow human beings, and violence in the society will wane and be completely eradicated. This terror torn earth will become loving, compassionate, and caring.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Humanity, in its all-out quest for this aesthetic science, attained spirituality. One must acknowledge this. Herein lies the excellence of aesthetic science. For this reason, I have given my whole-hearted and explicit support for nandana vijiṋána. You know that there are certain religions [Islam etc] which do not encourage aesthetic pursuits. You will notice that in those religions inertia, inferiority complexes and a sense of violence are predominant.” (1)

Some think that Islam includes those sufis who sing, dance, and play musical instruments, but that is wrong. In the Quran Sharif, songs are forbidden. And strict Islamists treat Sufis as heretics.

Baba
Story: harassing sadhaka & repercussion

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga ideology states, “When in the course of sadhana one attains the state of yatamána, then obstacles appear from all sides. Family members create obstructions. The environment creates obstructions” (1)

Shrii Umashankarji was initiated just prior to the 1970 Ananda Purnima DMC in Muzaffarpur, and he became regular and deeply involved in sadhana right away, by Baba's grace. At the same time, Umashankarji's laokik father was a very dogmatic person who was completely against Ananda Marga and sadhana.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How his father would torture him

His father would engage in various mean-minded schemes in order to harass and abuse Umashankarji when he was practicing meditation. Sometimes he would blast the radio next to his ear, other times he would throw pots of cold water on him, and one time he even dumped a big bowl of hot vegetable soup on Umashankarji while he was doing sadhana. Plus, his father would verbally accost him too - taunting and threatening him, and calling him names. He did not like that his son joined Ananda Marga, did sadhana, and had forsaken his sacred thread and hair.

In response, to escape his father's unruly wrath, Umashankarji would try and find quiet, lonely places so he could do his sadhana in peace. But always, his father would stalk him and torment him. This mistreatment took a big toll on Umashankarji. He could not take it anymore, and he was wondering how he could possibly survive in that house any longer and continue to do sadhana and remain an Ananda Margii. Umashankarji was even suffering from tortuous nightmares. His acarya told him to do more sadhana before going to sleep as that would help cure the nightmares.

One night while he was doing sadhana before sleep, his father threw an entire bucket of water on him - soaking his bedding as well. His father furthermore warned him that he must not leave the family tradition of maintaining his caste and doing idol worship. By this point, Shrii Umashankarji was feeling very frustrated and depressed. He did not want to give up Ananda Marga sadhana and he was facing a lot of opposition. He could not bear it any longer. Umashankarji felt he had no other recourse than to go and tell Baba. He had a strong desire to recount to Baba all the treacherous things that his laokik father was doing.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Unusual way he met Baba on fieldwalk

Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Baba would be coming to Muzaffarpur for DMC. Umashankarji planned to tell Baba everything. As soon as Baba arrived, Umashankarji approached one of Baba's bodyguards and expressed his desire to go on fieldwalk with Baba. The security chief told him that he must get permission from PA Dada, then he would be able to accompany Baba on fieldwalk, otherwise not. When Umashankarji inquired with PA, then PA told him, "No, already there are so many requests. You will have to go in the future - not now."

At that point, Umashankarji was feeling desperate. He knew he had to do something. After making various inquiries, he found out where Baba would be going for His fieldwalk. It was a remote area far away from the DMC grounds. Umashankarji had to take a bus and travel on foot to get there. Once he got to the location, he stood in the field and waited for Baba to arrive.

After some time, Baba embarked on His fieldwalk, along with His entourage - i.e. a few margiis and security personnel. They had walked for a while when off in the distance, they saw a lone figure - standing there with folded-hands. Baba asked PA Dada who was out there in the field. PA called for the person to come closer. As the lone figure got nearer, Baba said, "Oh, Umashankar, it is you - what is the problem?"

Umashankarji replied, "Baba, You know everything. I have a big problem: Remaining an Ananda Margii, doing sadhana, and staying in my house is impossible. My laokik father is harassing me - it is too much. You have to do something. I want that he should be removed from this world."

Baba scolded Umashankar, "Shame, shame, why are you thinking like this. Never think or wish ill upon others.”

Immediately, Umashankarji realised his mistake and repented.

Baba continued, “Tell your father that if he continues to torment you then you will leave the house and live in an Ananda Marga jagrti. Then your father will not harass you anymore. If still he continues to harass you, then do not worry. As a margii, you must not think ill of your father."

At that point, Shrii Umashankar felt very peaceful, by Baba's grace, and from that moment forward, he did not harbour any ill will towards his laokik father.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

I will leave & live in Ananda Marga ashram

When Umashankarji returned home from DMC, he approached his father. With a clear voice and benevolent heart, he said, "If you continue to harass me while I am doing meditation, then I have no option but to leave this house and go live in an Ananda Marga ashram. This is my Guru's mandate."

Umashankarji had full faith in Baba on this matter. His father thought he was bluffing and that Umashankarji would never leave.

His father yelled, "Go anywhere you like, but do not do sadhana in my house. If I see you doing meditation there will be trouble. You must leave Ananda Marga and follow our family traditions. Then you can stay, otherwise go where you wish."

Hearing his father's harsh reply, Umashankarji still held hope in his heart that his father might be rectified. However, his father continued to harass and abuse the innocent and spiritually-minded Umashankarji. The very next Sunday, 7 days later, Shrii Umashankar's father died of a massive heart-attack. He could not mend his ways so nature did not spare him.

What we can learn from this story

1st Teaching: As a sadhaka, as an Ananda Margii, one should never think of harming or hurting others. Baba never wants us to think in such an ugly and depraved manner. Asking Parama Purusa to harm others is static bhakti or aparabhakti.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

2nd Teaching: If you are involved in dharmic work and someone continually disturbs and harasses you, then nature will not tolerate it. And that is what happened with Umashankar’s father. He had to face the wrath of prakrti for his misdeeds and gross transgressions of bhagavad dharma.

3rd Teaching: If you are adhering to that path of dharma, then do not be intimidated or cowed down by any type of harassment or abuse.

Bound to be destroyed

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Whatever humans do in consistence with the dictates of dharma will ensure their well-being, their victory, their prosperity. And whoever goes against these ingrained human characteristics, against these dharma-orientated characteristics, will be doomed to destruction. For human beings, ideation on Parama Puruśa is a dharmic injunction. By divine decree everyone has the right to live in the world with dignity. If anyone creates any obstacle against this dharma-oriented system, if they oppose it, they are bound to be destroyed.” (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “You have learnt a well-ordered system of meditation and other spiritual practices based on dharma. If any individuals or groups, however powerful they may be, try to suppress you or even succeed in suppressing you, they are bound to be destroyed. History has witnessed many such a downfall in the past. No one has ever been victorious or will ever be victorious by opposing dharma. March ahead with your own strength, march with firm steps and your head held high. Always remember that when dharma is with you, whoever will oppose you will be razed to the ground – their destruction is a must.” (3)

Conclusion

When following dharma then there is no need to wish ill upon your enemies. They will be raised to dust automatically. And that is exactly what happened with Umashankar’s father. He was viciously harassing his son and in the end he met his demise. In this way, Umashankar’s path of forward movement was made clear.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Namaskar,
Sastaunga Pranam to Baba,
Gunmayii

Why yatamana

When a sadhaka comes on the path of sadhana then in the first stage serious obstacles come from the outside - i.e. from friends, relatives, father, mother, neighbours, the external world etc. That beginning stage is yatamana; so Umashankar was in the stage of yatamana. When one proceeds ahead, those external obstacles accept their defeat and run away. Then one’s parents etc do not create problems. In the second stage, vyatireka, internal problems come - various vrttis (i.e. psychi propensities) of the mind harass sadhakas. Then those mental inclinations also get defeated. In the third stage, ekendriya, the sadhaka gains mental powers and is enticed; and he misuses those powers. Then in the final stage, vashiikára, there are no obstacles. This is an extremely short summary of the various stages of sadhana.

Shrii Umashankar of Muzaffarpur was a very senior and respected margii. All along, Umashankarji was an extremely dedicated margii. Even during emergency when others were hiding, he was quite active and vocal, carrying the banner of Ananda Marga. And he continued to be vigilant in following Ananda Marga ideals and participating in Ananda Marga social life. Many know of his bhaktial heart and dharmic spirit. He always wanted to please Baba, so in spite of his obesity Umashankarji would dance tandava in front of everyone to make Baba laugh. Many may recall this jovial scene.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Yatamána: The microcosm wants to move forward. There are so many obstacles, so many mundane bondages, both external and internal. As you know, these internal bondages are known as ripus [enemies] and the external fetters are known as páshas [bondages]. One will have to look forward, [fighting] these internal and external bondages. [All those bondages on] the unit cognition are of baser nature. When a microcosm wants to move a step forward, so many inimical entities assemble and try to defeat that microcosm. So sádhaná requires a sort of fight, rather it is a fight, against all the [degenerating agencies]. In this first stage, the microcosm tries its best to fight against these internal and external enemies and tries to move forward. This stage is known as yatamána.” (4)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Devotees have no malice against anybody. Why should there be malice against anybody? While a great spiritualist was eating cooked rice, a hungry dog came and sat on his lap. The dog, too, started eating with him. When both were eating together an intellectual came and said, `Fie, fie, the dog is a filthy animal and yet you are eating with him from the same plate. What kind of person are you? You are untouchable'. The devotee replied, `I am Vis'n'u, this dog is Vis'n'u. Why then do you laugh at me? The whole universe is pervaded by Vis'n'u. Your abuses and praises are all the same to me. I love flowers and thorns equally.' Only a devotee can speak like this."  (5)

Ananda Vanii states, '"All the beings of this universe are the kith and kin of one another. No one is despicable. All are equally respectable and entitled to equal love and affection..." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Even if one does not harm anyone physically, but simply thinks of harming someone, sam'ska'ras will still be created. Whatever feelings one may have for a person, good or bad, will certainly cause a reaction.  That reaction will remain in potential form in the subtle mental sphere until the opportune time arrives for its expression. This is why wise people look upon this universe with an attitude of equanimity and pray for the welfare of all. Sarvesa'm maungalam ka'unks'e. People who fail to do this will have to suffer endlessly for their mean-mindedness." (7)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Ours is a universal family. Each and every entity -- living and non-living, moving and non-moving -- helps others in maintaining not only their equilibrium, but also the equipoise of the entire universe, not only of this small planet Earth. We are to move together with all." (8)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In static bhakti, the bhakta says, “O my Lord, I am your bhakta. Mr. Y is my enemy. Please destroy Him.” In the case of static bhakti, the bhakta doesn't want to be with the Lord. The bhakta wants something bad or harsh done to his or her enemy. That is bhakti of the worst type. As it was not the person's longing to become one with the Father, that person never will become united with the Father. And also, the Supreme Father is the Supreme Father of the enemy also. So He may or may not kill that enemy. Static bhakti is no bhakti." (9)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “What is static bhakti? You say: “O Lord, O Náráyańa, Mr. X is my enemy. Please kill him.” [laughter] It will not be possible for a man to get Náráyańa by this type of bhakti. Why? His longing was to kill Mr. X and not to get Náráyańa. So Náráyańa may or may not grant his request, may or may not kill Mr. X, but because his desire was not to get Náráyańa, it is sure that he won't get Náráyańa." (10)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "According to the degree of their bhakti human beings decide what to ask from Parama Puruśa. If their bhakti is motivated by too much selfishness, what will they ask? They will say internally to Parama Puruśa, “Well, Mr. So-and-so is harassing me, my tenant refuses to vacate my house, and Mr. Such-and-such is my sworn enemy; so, O Lord, please let them go to hell. Finish them off for good.” Now, if one prays in this way, “O Lord, Mr. So-and-so is my sworn enemy, so please let him go to hell,” the Lord will have to act intelligently, because that man's enemy will also say, “O Náráyańa, let my enemy go to hell.” So Náráyańa will be in a fix. Whom should He protect, whom should He please? He has to handle both sides." (11)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Those who curtail other people's rights oppose the divine providential law, thus inviting trouble for themselves." (12)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "There are three classifications within aparábhakti. When a so-called bhakta (aparábhakti means they are not devotees, they are so-called devotees) says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta,” and then says, “X is my enemy. Please kill him, please kill him!” this type of bhakti is called támasika bhakti. Actually it is not bhakti. When someone says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta, but You know, I am not getting any employment, please arrange for my employment,” he is not trying to harm anybody, but he wants physical development or physical elevation, his [physical] betterment. His bhakti, his so-called bhakti, is known as rájasika bhakti. And that is also aparábhakti, and aparábhakti is not bhakti. And suppose someone says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta, and You know, I want mukti, I want mukti,” and Parama Puruśa asks, “O my boy, why do you want mukti?” “Oh, I don't find any charm in this world, because I lost my digestive power. Either give me back my digestive power or give me mukti.” This is sáttvikii bhakti. Actually sáttvikii bhakti is not bhakti; aparábhakti is not at all bhakti." (13)

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. If you want to forward this story then attach the following yellow section with the story:

“Courtesy of unknown bhakta via Ananda Marga Universal (https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/)”

This will be treated as the standard protocol.

Cast away net of attachment

“Niiviŕa nishiitha sheśe, aruńa prabhát hese, elo, elo, elo re…” (Prabhat Samgiita #1846)

Purport:

At the end of the deep dark night, the crimson dawn is smiling. A new day is born: He has come, He has come, He has come. After prolonged tapasyá, the cimmerian darkness has been removed. In this moment, the skyscape has become vibrant and colourful. He has come, He has come, He has come.

Now, there is no more fear or catastrophe. No longer are there attempts to create distinctions and divisions amongst human beings. Today, moving ahead is the only work. With the decoration of light, the beautiful sun of the dawn has captivated my mind. He has come, He has come, He has come.

O’ bandhu, o’ my friends, do not sleep anymore - arise, awake. Open your eyes and look. Cast away that net of attachment to those old outdated ideas. Embrace the universal bond of neo-humanism. In bringing all together and pouring the sweetness of affection, the unknown Parama Purusa has come into our grasp today. He has come, He has come, He has come today…

Throwing those burkas and veils aside

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “A handful of unprincipled, power-hungry men propagated these [religious] doctrines in order to paralyse women’s reasoning, and to inflate men’s vanity. This doctrine is against nature and we have only to look out into this wide world to find numerous proofs against it. Can anybody drape a burka over a tigress? Is there anyone with enough courage to do it? Can anyone dictate to a tigress, “You cannot cross this boundary,” or “You cannot take part in games and sports, for this is prohibited to women”? Those who propagated these doctrines were not only unprincipled, they were also well aware of the inherent loopholes in their arguments. That is why they did not propagate their ideas directly in their own name. On the contrary, they propagated all those ideas in the name of God. They proclaimed them as the gospels of God; no one shall dispute it; one has to accept it without a murmur. When women will develop a sense of self-respect and be like other spirited creatures, they will cast aside the burkas and veils of servitude. They will then be enabled to expand their role in serving society in a balanced and consolidated way.” (1)
