How to save oneself from the burden of memories + 4 more

Baba

How to save oneself from the burden of memories

Namaskar,

A mother who lost her baby 50 years ago becomes sad when she remembers that baby today. So when any negative or painful memory comes into the mind then one should divert the mind away from that memory. Here the chief concern is over-indulging in those old memories. People do not remember ordinary happenings from the past. Just they remember the extremes: both good and bad. And they think again, and again, and again, on those points. Without any plan, those memories recur in the mind - but especially the bad memories. And those bad memories harass the individual and bring sadness. Those are very detrimental. I recall one person I knew who lost his wife to cancer and could not forget the memory of his wife, and within two years he also died.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Bad memories forcefully drag you back

In contrast, generally, regardless of how many good things happen in life, those good memories will not come again and again in the mind and chase you down. Nor do they keep you awake at night. Mostly they come when in the company of others and you are recounting those good times. And that itself is a waste of time. Then one is living in reverse gear. That is the worst; they are just wasting time and inflating the ego thinking about one’s greatness. Ultimately, it is not good.

The more you dwell in the past the more you are not moving forward. Human life is short. I can remember not far back when I was a small child and now the number of years I have lived I will not live that far into the future. Then I can gauge how short life is. Although, we are not sure about the future, even then wasting the time caught up in old memories is not good. That is Guru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji’s teachings: Get rid of old memories, and you will be very happy.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Worldly memory is bad

There are some advanced Alzheimer's patients who have no memory. Then they are very happy. But that is a disease. Here I am talking about sadhakas using their mental efforts to both wipe away old memories and not unnecessarily worry about the future. There are three bondages: (a) old memories of good events, (b) old memories of bad times, and (c) and anguish over the future. All three are bad. If one can overcome these three bondages, they can utilise their life beautifully and experience an abundance of happiness. There will not be any question of misery. And that is what everyone wants.

Unfortunately, most pass their days remembering their old pains and past glories: such as how they were mistreated, or how they failed in a particular manner, or how they scored three goals in a football match 40 years ago, or how they became class president in high school, or so many other bad and good things from days bygone. These do not contribute to one's progress as human beings or sadhakas. They make the mind preoccupied and heavy. In that case, one cannot remember the Divine Entity, Parama Purusa. Yet people churn these events in their mind again and again.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

That is why one should be aware about the types of things they are remembering. Contrary to materialistic living where people move from one whim to the next, the life of every sadhaka is marked by a definite goal: Parama Purusa. And to reach unto Him, so many steps are required, as well as His divine grace.

What to forget & what to remember

Here below Baba guides us how one of the key factors for spiritual attainment is right memory - samyak smrti, as this keeps the mind light and burden-free.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now samyak smrti is remembering whatever is congenial to the spirit of never-ending human progress, and other items you may forget. Suppose a man unnecessarily wounded your sentiment. If you remember it you will be suffering from internal pain, mental agony. Try to forget it. It is better to forget it. If you want peace, you should forget it. But suppose you have learned something good. You should retain it. Those items coming within the second scope, that is, the scope of retention, are samyak smrti. And the best thing that you must always try to retain within the scope of your smrti, within the periphery of your smrti, is the name of Parama Puruśa, is the idea of Parama Puruśa. You must not forget it even for a single moment." (1)

Baba guides us that we should forget about those events that cause torment and pain, and worldly joy. Remembering those events over and over again is not conducive for spiritual unfolding. Then Baba guides us that spiritual teachings should be remembered. And Baba culminates the matter by guiding us that the very best thing to remember is Parama Purusa. Parama Purusa should be the focal point - that is proper memory.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, “A human being’s burden grows along with the past, the present and the future. For example, perhaps you are thinking: once you were eating rich, delicious and costly foods such as háluyápuri, murg-mashallam, namkiin poláo – this is all the burden of the past. Similarly, today you will eat this and that, you will wear such and such, afterwards you will go to your friend's house and they will ask you about what you are wearing – this is the burden of the present. In the same way, you will earn money in the future by doing business, become rich and gain esteem in the society – this is the burden of the future. Buddha warned his mendicants who were thirsty for liberation: O mendicants, lighten the burden that lies before you.” (2)

Keeping the mind pure to receive His call

Here below Baba unveils the special technique for keeping the mind light whereby it can move speedily unto Supreme Self.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "When you are to move fast, your mind should be light; if the mind is heavy it will not be able to move fast. What makes the mind heavy? So many impurities of thought...

Muinca pure muinca pacchata majjhe muinca bhabassa pa'ragu'

    [Remove all the water from the boat of your body;
being free from water, it will become very light.]

Ananda Marga ideology says, “You should make your mind light. You should give up all worldly thoughts, all base thoughts, all depraving thoughts, and make yourself light.” To make oneself light means to free oneself from impurities. A magnet can easily attract a piece of iron, but if that piece of iron is full of impurities, that very magnet may not be able to attract that iron. So the Supreme Self, Supreme Lord, is always attracting you, but because of your heaviness due to worldly impurities, you are not being attracted by Him." (3)

If one is hindered by both good and bad memories then remembering Parama Purusa will be extremely difficult. We are to get rid of those old, worn-out memories and think only about Him. The more we remember events of old the more readily they come back into the mind - even uncalled for, unintentionally. In contrast, the more one ideates on Him, the more we are unshackled by worldly dealings - instead it is His remembrance that enters and remains in the mind, by His grace.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So that is the magic formula for keeping the mind light. Leave worldly dealings aside, and instead fill the mind with His thought. To this end both auto-suggestion (mantra japa etc) and outer suggestion (satsaunga, reading His discourses etc) are absolutely integral.

Conclusion

The aim of every sadhaka is to always remember Baba - only then can one cross the ocean of samskara and reach unto Him. Yet to cross the ocean of samskara one must make the mind light and free by remembering Him and staying under His divine shelter. One cannot cross that ocean if one is weighed down by all kinds of worries from the past, or fears about the future. Even remembering one's glories are not helpful in crossing that ocean of samskara. All such memories are an impediment and shackle us. The mind should be pure and light so it can easily focus on the Supreme.

If one sits and starts thinking that, “I will not think about old memories.” That will not do. Or if one confides in their friends everyday that, “I will not think about my son who died 30 years back.” But that means they are remembering their deceased son everyday and harming themselves. Then what is the way? When that type of bad memory comes then swiftly divert the mind towards Parama Purusa. Or if you cannot do that then think about a social service project. That is why it is important for sadhakas to keep busy in serving others. Then bad memories will not drag you back. Best is to think about Parama Purusa or think about serving Parama Purusa in the form of living beings. Then your mind will be engaged in the proper direction.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Rupatiita

History is important so looking back and having a quick glance at the positive and negative events is helpful for forward movement. That prevents one from making the same mistake again. But plunging oneself in the history of the past is bad.

Stay within Your shelter

“Toma're a'mi ceyechi loka'laye naya mana nilaye, Ma'nasa-deule ta'i sa'jiyechi…” (Prabhat Samgiita #4083)

Purport

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, I want to see and receive You, but not somewhere externally. I want to have You in the core of my heart - in a very deep and intimate way. I decorated my inner temple in my mind beautifully solely for You.

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, my Dearmost, my Everything, my Beloved, I am offering You my countless salutations, again and again. I know this essence in the mortal world that You are creation, You are sustenance, and You are the ultimate goal.

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, when there was nothing, You were there. You would also remain when nothing will remain. All would stay within Your shelter in seed form, from a blade of grass to the cosmos all are dancing with the rhythm of your ankle bell...

Two mudras to prevent & cure diseases

These two mudras - uddayan mudra and utksepa mudra - are very important for all-round health as they serve as prevention and treatment for numerous diseases. In the Ananda Marga Yogic Treatments book, these two mudras are pervasively used. So all should know how to practice these mudras - i.e. when to inhale and when to exhale etc. Actually they are so basic, there is no need to ask any acarya etc. The instructions are printed in Caryacarya part 3 for all to see. Everyone has access to this knowledge. People should therefore take it upon themselves to acquire the foundational knowledge of basic Ananda Marga practices, like these two important mudras.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Ud́d́ayana mudrá: Standing, place the hands above the knees and bend forward a little. Gradually breathe out, to a state of complete exhalation. Keeping the breath out, draw the abdomen and lower abdomen inward as hard as possible, to touch the spine. Maintain this position for eight seconds. Then gradually inhale fully. Practise eight times.” (1)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Utkśepa Mudrá: This mudrá should be practised in bed immediately upon waking. While lying on the back, one should flex both the arms and legs, bringing them over the chest, and then return them immediately to the extended position. After doing this three or four times, sit up in bed and drink a glass of cold water without allowing the water to touch the teeth. After this you should expose the navel area to the air, and walk up and down in this way for some time in the open air.” (2)

Some of our Wts do not regularly study Guru's books so they end up teaching margiis the wrong thing, or neglect to teach them the right thing. Best is for every Ananda Margii to study Guru's teachings directly. Not studying and just depending on acaryas for basic elements will not yield a proper result. Suppose you ask an acarya and they do not know and give a false answer instead, then the patient will be harmed.

...will continue forever

Prout philosophy states, "The fight between vidyá and avidyá will go on forever; so the necessity of more or less police and military will also go on forever. But then, when the world government is established, this necessity will decrease. As there is always fight between vidyá and avidyá, more or less class struggle, too, will continue forever. Hence those who day-dream that, after establishing a classless society, they will be able to enjoy a sound slumber with their arms and legs outstretched, will be totally disappointed." (1)

Fundamentals of vivaha

This following quote is well-explained and shows how marriage is only between a male and a female and not two people of the same gender. Since the inception of marriage during Lord Shiva's time, marriage has been between a man and a woman. And that is what Baba has approved for AMPS. So when the point of same sex marriage is raised then one should give Baba's teaching that it is always between a man and a woman - not between a man and a dog etc. In the west, some so-called open-minded people are confused and are always try and bring some argument in favour of gay marriage, but according to the purview of Ananda Marga philosophy, their logic has no legs to stand upon.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "He [Lord Shiva] declared that women must be kalatra, which means that women must discharge their obligations to their husbands and their children in such a way that the latter will not have the least difficulty."
"Those who accepted this new arrangement were declared married, and the other members of their society would be witnesses to the marriage ceremony, to bless the newly-married couple and pledge their cooperation to them. The Sanskrit equivalent for marriage is viváha (vi – vah + ghaiṋ): it means, after the ceremony, the man and woman can no longer live as libertines or as irresponsible so-called family people. They have to discharge their full obligations as bharttá and kalatra, responsible husband and responsible wife." (1)

Sadhana: all lessons needed + 5 more

Baba
Sadhana: all lessons needed

Namaskar,

This letter focuses on the practice of sadhana and our dhyana practice; various guidelines for dhyana are outlined below.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The man who is intelligent should from his very childhood move along this path of psycho-spirituality. The sooner a man starts or moves along this path of psycho-spirituality, the better it is. He is the blessed one." (1)
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadhana: courage & memory power increases

For sadhakas, the practice of sadhana is a very significant event in their life. In day to day existence, sadhana is a mainstay. The following is directly related with our practice of sadhana-- what to do and what not to do etc.

Here following are three English summaries from Baba’s original Hindi discourse given on MGD, 26 July 1980, Udaipur, printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam - 46 (Pure), chapter 13, परमा शान्ति, केवलाभक्ति / Paramá Shánti, Kevalá Bhakti.
  • With the practice of dhyana, the memory power of a sadhaka increases immensely and their courage also multiplies. (English summary, MGD, 26 July 1980, Udaipur, printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam - 46 (Pure), chapter 13, परमा शान्ति, केवलाभक्ति / Paramá Shánti, Kevalá Bhakti)
  • If all of one’s propensities become concentrated on a singular point and merge into the I-feeling, then that very human becomes a devata (god) in human form. This is not an impossible task. This is easily achieved with the practice of dhyana yoga. (English summary, MGD, 26 July 1980, Udaipur, printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam - 46 (Pure), chapter 13, परमा शान्ति, केवलाभक्ति / Paramá Shánti, Kevalá Bhakti)
  • You boys and you girls who have not yet learned dhyana yoga should learn this practice as soon as possible from your acarya. The reason is that dhyana yoga contains many important qualities. By the unique practice of dhyana yoga you can become one with Parama Purusa. (English summary, MGD, 26 July 1980, Udaipur, printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam - 46 (Pure), chapter 13, परमा शान्ति, केवलाभक्ति / Paramá Shánti, Kevalá Bhakti)

Confusion "I just do 10 minutes of dhyana"

In the past, I have heard people say, "I do not have time for doing different lessons so I just do 10 minutes of dhyana. Because dhyana is the top most lesson. That is the best one. So I only do that lesson with what little time I have."
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

But we should all be aware that in our Ananda Marga system of meditation graciously given by Sadguru Baba, each and every lesson of sadhana has its own value and significance. In order to do proper dhyana and progress spiritually, it is necessary to strengthen the lower cakras. On this point all sadhakas should be aware of Baba's following direction.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In order to advance spiritually, one has to first establish control over these lower cakras, then finally over the sahasra'ra cakra." (2)

Wrong way to do

What will happen if someone only practices 6th lesson, dhyana, and neglects doing the other lessons of sadhana. Here we have to remember the various lessons of Ananda Marga sadhana are important building blocks for doing 6th lesson. So if those lessons are neglected then the corresponding cakras remain dirty in which case dhyana will be adversely affected. The point is that if the lower cakras are not properly controlled then dhyana [on sahasra'ra cakra] will be disturbed.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If one, conversely, tries to control the sahasra'ra first while the other cakras remain uncontrolled, spiritual practice on the sahasra'ra may be hampered." (3)

Meditation must be in motionless

It is important not to underestimate the importance of strengthening the lower cakras by sincerely practicing all the lessons of Ananda Marga sadhana. Because even if one can manage dhyana or 6th lesson and bring the mind to the sahasrara cakra, still if the lower cakras are not properly controlled the outcome will not be desirable.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Not only that, even if the sahasra'ra cakra can be brought under control, the final result will not be good if the subsidiary cakras are not brought under control." (4)

In the very same discourse Baba discusses the deep link between body and mind - and that it is essential to keep the body tranquil and still during meditation as that enables us to focus the mind to a greater degree.

Ananda Marga spiritual philosophy states, "If the body is restless, the mind will also be restless. That is why during spiritual practice, the body should be kept motionless. One must practise seated in a certain posture, because if the body becomes calm and motionless the mind also tends to become calm and concentrated." (5)

Relation between body & mind

In our Ananda Marga system, sadhakas are taught to do sadhana in postures like padmasana or siddhasana.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If someone is constantly thinking that he will have to sit down at a certain time, stand up at a certain time, catch hold of one's nose or ears at a certain time, the mind will automatically tend to become restless. Such is the intimate relation between the body and the mind." (6)

In such types of ritualistic prayers when the body is moving hither and thither, then the mind also gets restless. So altogether the idea is that the body should be motionless while doing sadhana.  And in that condition naturally sadhana will be better. Also bear in mind that there should not be any confusion about our movement in kiirtan. Kiirtan is not sadhana it is sadhanaunga - a helping tool of sadhana. That is why after doing kiirtan we always sit for meditation.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Head hit squarely on the back

During sadhana some margiis keep their cats or dogs or their pets on their lap when sitting for sadhana. But that should not be treated as real sadhana, but rather as a show of sadhana. I also know of one margii who was even keeping his two little monkeys on both his legs during meditation. But, as I say, this is not proper.

In various units during dharmacakra when sadhana starts some margiis start yawning and some in half sleep start waving back and forth. And others are hunched over and then they straighten their backs and then again they become hunched over. But all these types of movements are not good.

There was one incident in dharmacakra when all of a sudden the front side of one Dada's head hit another Dada squarely on the back. Then the Dada whose head hit the other dada woke up and again he sat up straightened and made his back straight.

Conclusion

Baba guides us that human life is for sadhana. So keen attention should be paid to follow all the lessons and guidelines of spiritual life. Failing that one may fall into poor habits and lose their sadhana flow, without even realising it. That is why it is important to routinely review Baba’s teachings and do self-analysis to ensure one is adhering to the path and following Sixteen Points. Then one may experience proper dhyana, by His grace, and reach the Goal.

~ In-depth study ~

Intellectuality is utter foolishness, a waste of time

As we all know, sadhana is very important. And in the following teachings Baba is giving tremendous emphasis and value to sadhana, our spiritual practice'.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "When you come in close contact with the Supreme Entity, you will find that you have no wealth superior to devotion. All worldly possessions will prove of no avail. Only devotion enables you to come into close contact with Him. This is the goal of human life. This is true progress. You have been wandering through the labyrinth of a myriad of lives. You have been ever advancing toward this stage. Knowingly or unknowingly, you are being drawn unto Him. This is the summum bonum of life. As long as you have not realized Him, there is no siddhi in your life." (7)

Ananda Marga ideology states,"Those human beings who do not perform spiritual practice are under the influence Prakrti...I have said before that there can be no progress either in the realm of physicality or in the realm of intellectuality. Those who are hankering for progress in these fields are indulging in a self-cheating business. Whether they admit it or not, they know that they know nothing. Ask them whether they are getting pleasure in the realm of physicality. They will admit that they are not. Ask a good business man whether he is earning good profits. His reply will be, 'What profit? I am incurring losses'. This will be his reply whether you belong to Income Tax Department or not! To run after progress in the realm of physicality and intellectuality is utter foolishness, a waste of time, as there is no progress in these fields." (8)

Foolish decision: leave sadhana for old age

Here in this next series of quotes Baba guides us that we are to do sadhana in the prime of our life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Some people consider that one should start intuitional practice in old age when a person has more leisure." (9)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Whoever is born is bound to die and one is constantly approaching death, not knowing when it will come. It is never certain if one will live to grow old. Yet people reserve the most important work of practising sa'dhana' for the time when the body has become completely enfeebled and the fatuous mind of old age." (10)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "There is no value in remembering God in old age, when it is not possible to concentrate the mind due to the weakness and disease of the body and its preoccupation with the reactions (sam'ska'ras) of the deeds of this life. The mind then is caught up in the infirmities of the body, in the diseases of old age, impending death, and most of all, in memories of past incidents, and it is impossible to concentrate the mind. For these reasons one is incapable of intuitional practice." (11)

Reminder

To reiterate, the lower cakras are building blocks and for practicing dhyana in the crown cakra. Proper attention has to be paid to those lessons that strengthen the lower cakras.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If one, conversely, tries to control the sahasra'ra first while the other cakras remain uncontrolled, spiritual practice on the sahasra'ra may be hampered." (12)

In our Ananda Marga system, sadhakas are taught to do sadhana in postures like padmasana or siddhasana. This very science is not known to common people. That is why in their rituals they move about: Sometimes standing, then kneeling, then sitting, then placing their hands on their head etc. On other occasions they talk the entire time so their jaw and tongue are moving, and other times they move up and down and all around. But all these movements are distracting to the mind. For more about those religions that move about when they pray and workshop, read more about them here.

My mind is full of bliss

“Tumi ásiyácho tamah náshiyácho, duhkher udadhi shukháyeche…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0620)

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, You have graciously come and removed my darkness - all the ignorance and bad samskaras of my mind. Because of Your infinite mercy, the ocean of misery has dried up, and now my mind is full of bliss. O’ Parama Purusa, You have loved me; You are present in my heart, smiling. Because of You, the flower buds have burst into bloom.

Baba, those menacing clouds that had accumulated in the northeastern sky of my mind have floated away. Because of Your arrival, all the gloominess has departed and gone somewhere else. You melodiously played the flute and filled everyone’s heart with smiles and joy. You have spread Your floral aroma everywhere. You have filled the whole atmosphere with that sweet fragrance.

O’ Lord, the mental agonies and sufferings of those neglected and dishonoured people, who were marginalized and lying in the dust, have been removed. Because of You, all their miseries are over. The hearts of those suffering people are now overflowing with delight and jubilation; their exuberance has inundated this entire cosmos.

Baba, Your august arrival is magical….

AM marriages: do not display Baba’s photo

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "The pratiika [emblem of Ananda Marga] should be placed in an elevated place in the marriage hall." (1)

In His above teaching, Baba gives clear reference that the pratiika should hold a prominent place in the hall during our Ananda Marga marriage ceremonies. At the same time, there is no mention in Caryacarya of having Guru's photo on display.

The reason is that some non-margiis may be attending the marriage and Baba's photo should not be displayed in front of those who do not have utmost reverence for Him. That is why we should strictly follow Caryacarya and not put His photo on display during our Ananda Marga marriage ceremonies. Whereas, with the pratiika, non-margiis will positively accept it as a tantrika symbol and will have respect for it - just as every religion and organisation has their own symbol. So even if non-margiis do not know the full significance of the pratiika, they will accept it at face value and not degrade it. But that is not the case with the photo.

To preserve the sanctity of the photo, at our Ananda Marga marriage ceremony we must not put Guru's pratikrti [photo] on display. On this matter, we must strictly abide by the dictates of Caryacarya, and not show the photo.

Shame on such types of artists

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Here it must be noted that artists must seek to exhibit to people the simple form of truth, sweetened with the sweetness of their hearts. But it is a matter of great regret that a class of modern artists, in the realms of poetry, novels, cinema, drama, etc., employ all their artistic talents for the sole purpose of kindling people’s crude sensuality, instead of portraying human propensities with the idealistic outlook of a true artist – what to speak of portraying their subtle human feelings. Without supporting conservatism, I would say that this class of artists is truly a blot on society." (1)

Why capitalists are worse than…

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "The path of the vipras [cunning intellectuals] is crooked and so is the path of the vaeshyas [greedy capitalists]. The difference between them is that since the vaeshyas' crooked intellect has no trace of spiritual consciousness, it often proves to be suicidal."

"A dreadful calamity will befall society if those who have intellectual capacity squander it by running after mundane pleasures instead of utilizing it to realize spiritual bliss – if they utilize all their intellect to fatten themselves by sucking the vital juice of others. So there can be no social welfare until this type of mentality is eradicated or rendered ineffectual through circumstantial pressure. No political leader or governmental or social system can build a welfare state, a socialistic state or an ideal society if they neglect this fundamental disease. If those who go around looking for opportunities to enlarge their stomachs by sucking the vital force of others continue to control society or the nation through their own group of sinners, what can one expect to see in such a society except a horrid picture of hell!" Prout philosophy states, "Another glaring instance of social injustice is the custom of dowry. This is a real disgrace in a civilized society. If we go deeply into the reasons for such an injustice it will be clear that there are two main reasons behind it."

"First, dowry occurs where males and females earn disproportionate incomes. The Náyyár and Izave communities of Kerala follow the matrilineal order and hence no dowry is claimed by the males. The Khasia community of Assam follow a similar system. In Burma, though the patrilineal order is in vogue, women are economically independent so they get a dowry."

"Secondly, dowry occurs where there is a disproportionate number of males and females. If the number of males is more, females get dowry and vice-versa. In Punjab, the number of males is more than the number of females so the females get a dowry. The situation is similar for Muslims. The false vanity of the aristocracy also causes dowry. Aristocratic people think, “Our family is a high class family, hence we should get a dowry.” In a Proutistic structure there will be no scope for dowry." (1)

Way to improve memory + 3 more

Baba
Way to improve memory

Namaskar,

One day, margii brother Dayal came to me. I was asking about his well-being, and I came to know that his son could not get through one exam for entering his chosen profession. Dayal was lamenting the fact that his son could not pass.

Story of Mr. Dayal & his son

Then I came to know that his son has very poor memory. The boy works hard, yet he forgets many things. His student life was also like that.

I asked Dayal, 'Did you not do anything to increase the memory of your son. Your son is laborious, but even then could not get through the exam?'

In a sad mood he said that, 'We have visited both allopathic and homeopathic doctors, as well as ayurvedic physicians. Whatever liquid, tablet, or palatable type of medicine they recommended we tried, but a satisfactory result did not come.'
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

And Dayal further told, 'Last year I visited DMS, and talked with different margiis and dadas. But I could not get a proper answer from them either, on this point.'

With interest, he purchased some Baba's books also. And then further Dayal told, that after reading, he applied a certain tool which Baba has given. That also did not work.

After listening to this last response, I became very curious to know in detail, what and which teaching of Baba. Then Dayal told this following guideline.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The psycho-spiritual approach which strengthens the memory, and makes the intellect omniscient. A good way to stabilize the memory is to meditate on someone you have seen or heard about who possesses a unique photographic memory. This will increase your own memory." (1)

Understanding Baba's books is not easy

In a patient manner, I asked him, 'What is wrong in this. How have you applied it?'
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

He told, 'As it is written in this book, I followed it exactly.'

Dayal further said, 'One of the brilliant professors of the university has gold medals in more than ten subjects. That professor has a unique memory. So my son was meditating regularly on him. That also did not work.'

After listening intently, I thought that this is the time to interrupt. First of all, I was thinking that to understand Baba's books is not very easy. Many points Baba spoke directly, but there are many aspects of His teachings which Baba gave in a more indirect manner. Thus, to understand Guru's discourses it needs a certain degree of vivek.

Dayal is a simple margi. He is confused, as I was confused in my early years as a margii. In his confusion, Dayal advised his son to meditate on the gold medal winning, brilliant university professor. So now it became my duty to bring him onto the right path

I explained to Dayal that, 'You see, in this teaching Baba is indirectly talking about Parama Purusa. Look at it in this way. Baba indirectly spoke that, "Meditate on someone you have seen or heard about who possesses a unique photographic memory".'

I continued, 'In this above phrase Baba is not referring to any human being. Rather, by this way, indirectly Baba is talking about Parama Purusa.'

Baba indirectly told, "Meditate on someone you have seen or heard about who possesses a unique photographic memory."

In summary, I stated, 'It is quite clear that this teaching is related with the dhyana of Sadguru Taraka Brahma - not with the university professor. And that very dhyana of Parama Purusa will increase the memory. Baba's making reference to dhyana and memory is not a one-time event. In many places, Baba has discussed how dhyana helps in increasing memory.'
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Dhyana & enhancing memory

Baba's important mandate on enhancing memory is doing dhyana sadhana, i.e. sixth lesson.

Here is one of Baba's unique teachings where He is indirectly referring to Parama Purusa. Some other people may not be able to understand Baba's below teaching, but any devotee will certainly recognise that in the below citation Baba is talking about the dhyana of Ananda Marga.

Baba says, "The psycho-spiritual approach which strengthens the memory, and makes the intellect omniscient. A good way to stabilize the memory is to meditate on someone you have seen or heard about who possesses a unique photographic memory. This will increase your own memory." (2)

By dhyana our mind becomes like His mind - in which case there is nothing in this universe that we will not be able to remember.

“I will not allow any portion of my mind to wander”

Baba's next mandate for developing strong memory recall is to be pointed and concentrated. If one is studying chemistry, one should not also be talking on the phone and listening to music at the same time. Then you will not be able to fully remember the subject of chemistry. Because the mind cannot simultaneously involve in more than one work. The mind will be bifurcated and the memory will be retarded.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba says, "One mental flow is engaged in memorizing the subjects being studied, while another mental flow entertains various other thoughts such as: 'What will my parents and seniors say if I fail in the examination? The juniors in my locality will cease to respect me, they will say all kinds of unpleasant things...' and so on. Obviously that boy's mental power has become bifurcated." (3)

So the mind should be completely fixed on what you want to remember. If the mind is in a fickle state or moving from one pabulum to another - from one object to another - then remembering any point will be impossible. Fixed concentration is needed. At the same time, one should not entertain other types of thoughts - all mental diversions should be pushed aside.

Baba says, "What should a wise person do in such circumstances? He should think nothing else except: 'I will memorize whatever I'm reading now, without bothering about my gains if I succeed or my losses if I fail in the task. I will not allow any portion of my mind to flow in an undesirable direction, and thus I will keep my mind exclusively engrossed in the task of learning'." (4)

Accordingly, we should only think about that which we wish to learn and remember. For instance, if one is walking down the street and remembering their ista mantra, then one should not also think about that when they get home they have to pay their taxes nor should they think about the fact that last year their business sales were low. If one wants to remember their ista mantra, then that sadhaka should think about their mantra - period. No active attention should be paid to any other thought, word, or idea. By this process, one will develop a stronger and stronger ability to remember their ista mantra.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Have interest in the subject matter

One other component for developing a strong memory is that one can generally create pointed concentration only if the topic is of interest and value to them. If anyone thinks that something is useless or unimportant, then they will not be able to concentrate properly and hence will not remember that idea or teaching.

For instance, if one goes vegetable shopping then upon their return they will most certainly remember what they purchased and how much it cost, but they will not remember all the faces of the other customers or recall what other people purchased. Because those things are not important to them. So if you want to remember any particular topic, then you must develop an interest in that subject. And if you are not interested in that subject you will never remember the idea.

Point of memory: repetition needed

Baba's next guideline for developing a strong and proper memory is regular repetition. For instance, if we want to remember a sutra or shloka or one of Baba's discourses, then first we must follow Guru’s aforementioned teachings about (a) pointed concentration to the subject matter, and (b) cultivating a sincere interest in the topic. But that in and of itself will not be enough. The human mind has its limitations and over time we will forget. In that case, to keep the point alive in the mind regular repetition is needed.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Just as advertisers play and post their message again and again to keep the point alive, we are to follow the same approach except with dharmic teachings. We are using Baba's books and audio cassettes etc as external stimuli to keep His teachings fresh in the mind. In the beginning we may need to review by reading or listening to the topic monthly or even weekly. Thereafter, the span of time between review sessions can increase to 3 months, 6 months, or even yearly, until finally we reach a point when those ideas are fully rooted in the mind and we have them for life - they will not be forgotten. So the above is an excellent way to remember good ideas.

Conclusion

Baba, being merciful, has given numerous ways of heightening the power of recollection. By keenly adhering to His guidelines, everyone can be greatly benefited, in numerous ways. So all sadhakas should aim to excel in this arena. And by sincerely following His teachings, it becomes quite evident how and why multitasking is harmful.

In Him,
Devaraj

~ In-depth study ~

Eighty-year-old person with memory of a twenty five-year-old

Baba says, "Over the age of fifty both the body and the mind start their decline. The power of memory diminishes and people start to forget things. This is the rule. But through the practice of vista'ra sadhana, this decline checks. Even an eighty year old person is able to keep the memory as fresh as a twenty five year old person. In the mental sphere, the result may be much more evident than in the physical sphere. Normally people hear, learn, and forget. But by the practice of sadhana, when the nerve cells get strengthened, dhruva smrti comes. Then one does not forget easily. In exactly the same way, by the dint of higher spiritual practice, one can bring about the expansion of oneself...Human beings become omniscient, become one with Parama Purusa. Nothing is impossible through the practice of sadhana." (5)

Why one is unable to remember

Baba says, "One whose mental power is weak, whose nerve-cells are feeble, who has little will-power, who cannot make his mind singularly pointed or concentrate sharply, has a short memory. He is unable to remember what has been seen or thought after a lapse of time." (6)

Baba says, "The human mind has two functions - thinking and memorizing. The more the thinking capacity increases the more the power of memory develops. The nerve cells also change, leading to a corresponding change in the nerve fibres. These changes create a stir and a revolution in the world of thought." (7)

The best way to increase memory

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Many people have asked me how they can increase their power of memory. Personally, I know quite a few secrets in this regard, as well as a number of physical exercises which increase the power of memory. In our 16 Points there are a number of psychic exercises which also help. In my experience, however, the quickest way is to meditate on that person who has a tremendously powerful memory." (8)

Baba says, "The exact mental reproduction of what has been previously perceived is called smrti or memory. For instance, you once perceived an elephant by observing a real elephant and seeing its huge body, legs, eyes, ears, nose and trunk. The physical form of the elephant struck the retina of your eyes creating a vibration in your optical fluid, and was ultimately imprinted in your mind as the image of the elephant. Now some time later when you see an animal with the same type of limbs as those of your previously perceived elephant, you immediately conclude that this animal must also be an elephant. Your conclusion is based on your previous perception. This is memory." (9)

We all have room for growth and improvement; we should better understand memory and the functioning of mind. Baba has outlined distinct ways to sharpen memory and hence enhance the quality of life. We should learn and practice these points, and share them with all we know.

Unusual point about kiirtana

Here below is an English summary of Baba’s Bangla teaching from Shabda Cayanika:

The following describes how and to what degree human beings are aware about their own unit consciousness (Shiva'tma). As well as how they come in contact with their shiva'tma.

For example, it is just like when one looks in the mirror then one does not see their real self, but rather a reflection of that. Or it is similar to when one awakens from a deep sleep then they can recall only part of their dream, and some aspects of their dream they cannot remember. Or perhaps, more precisely, they can only remember a reflection of their dream-- and not the dream itself.

In contrast, there are other occasions where one looks at their own reflection in the water and they can clearly see their reflected image. But still that is not one's entire being. It remains but a reflection. Just like if one sees a reflection of a mango in the water then that is just a reflection and not the real mango.

In reality only we come in contact with our unit consciousness when we sing kiirtana and some bliss comes. Then we come in contact with our shiva'tma.

So in the spiritual field one comes in contact with their own unit consciousness after singing spiritually vibrated music like kiirtana or bhajans. For this reason, such types of devotional chanting or singing is highly essential in the life of a sadhaka. And when one comes in momentary contact with their own unit consciousness while singing kiirtana this is known as Gandharva loka. One can only feel the bliss of kiirtan when their mind reaches into Ghandharva loka. (1)

Central defect of capitalism

Prout philosophy states, “Human expressions are trifarious. Human beings have unquenchable, infinite physical longings and out of these physical longings capitalism came into existence. Capitalists toil day and night for money. This may be a natural desire but physical objectivity is finite, hence the infinite desire to accumulate finite physical objects is a psychic ailment.”

“Human beings also have unquenchable, infinite psychic longings, and out of these excessive psychic longings psychic ailments arise and people become abnormal. The object of psychic longings associated with physicalities is also finite, but the object of pure psychic longing is infinite. Your psychic body and physical objectivity are always separate and so the seed of dualism arises. But the attainment of spiritual objectivity means bridging the gulf between the self and the object, and in this attainment lies peace. The psychic ailments mentioned above also lead to clash with others and create many have-nots. We have to divert physical longings to psychic and spiritual longings to avoid a fratricidal war, and thereby safeguard human rights.” (1)

In no way indicative of the glory of human intellect

“Despite its advent onto this earth many thousands of years ago, humanity is not yet capable of building a well-integrated and universal human society. This is in no way indicative of the glory of human intellect and erudition. You, who have understood the predicament, realized the urgency, seen the naked dance of evil and heard the hypocritical and raucous laughter of the divisive forces should throw yourselves into this noble task without further delay. When the ends are just and noble, success is inevitable.” (Ananda Vanii #42)

Note 1: True Ananda Vaniis have a number whereas Fake Ananda Vaniis do not - just as a fake car license plate has no number. By this way, you can easily recognise a Fake Ananda Vanii.
