Reply to skeptics: singing His glory

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga teachings are rational and scientific, and offer a sublime spiritual cult. But some skeptics challenge our foundational principles. We should know how to respond to those accusations. Here is one case study.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Query of skeptics

Some think that, "Just as I like to be praised, in the same way Parama Purusa also likes to be praised. He wants others to do all types of practices like kiirtana and bhajans because He wishes to be praised. However, when we humans hanker praise, Parama Purusa warns us that we will become small-minded and degenerated."

Those skeptics argue, "How interesting it is that when Parama Purusa wishes to be praised then everything is fine and well, but when humans wish to be praised it is looked upon as lowly." This is the way some wrongly accuse Ananda Marga philosophy.

"As you think so you become"

The next question is why is it that Parama Purusa guides us to repeat His name, sing His glory, and meditate on Him. Why is He the focal point of all our practices? The answer is not that He is longing to be praised. Rather, His desire is that we should progress on the path of spirituality. He wants His progeny to be liberated. And the way to achieve that status is to think of Him.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The science at work is: "As you think so you become." He wants that His progeny should progress and this is the only way: To think about His Supreme Self. If one thinks about their own petty existence they will degenerate. Whereas, if anyone thinks about His greatness and sings His praises, they will become great like Him. That is the reason why humans repeat His name.

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "The characteristic of Parama Puruśa is that whosoever takes His ideation, become as vast as Him by His grace. “Brhatvadá Brahma Brḿhańatvád Brahma”. The word Brahma means very great. Is He only great? No, He is great, Himself and can make others great; so, He is called Brahma. When, by taking His ideation human mind becomes like that of Parama Puruśa." (1)

"If one ideates on Parama Puruśa…"

That is the inner secret. The unique characteristic of Parama Purusa is that He can make others great and the formula is to think of Him. When anyone ideates on Parama Purusa, they take on His supreme qualities and ultimately become one with Him.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "If one ideates on Parama Puruśa one will acquire His qualities. People ultimately become as they think: Yádrshii bhávaná yasya siddhirbhavati tádrshii." (2)

Conclusion

So there is no question of Parama Purusa wishing to be praised. Rather, He wants that we should sing His glories and think of Him so that we can attain liberation. By ideating on His divine Self, sadhakas become like Him: free of all bondages and perfect in all respects, i.e. liberated.

~ In-depth study ~

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Sádhaná broadens and enlarges the mind. How? It is the innate characteristic of the human mind to become as it thinks – Yádrshii bhávaná yasya siddhirbhavati tádrshii [“As you think, so you become.”] To associate oneself with Parama Puruśa, the Supreme Entity, is the actual sádhaná. There is no one greater than Parama Puruśa, and so, when the mind ideates on Him, it expands.” (3)

Sing the Lord’s glory in a loud voice

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “If anyone is to be praised in this world, if anyone’s virtues are to be extolled loudly through kiirtana, it should be Parama Puruśa...devotees will openly sing praises to Parama Puruśa. Kiirtana means, as I said a little earlier, to sing the Lord’s glory in a loud voice.” (4)

Ananda Marga ideology teaches, “Human beings are advised to only do Hari kiirtan, kiirtan on the Lord. Kiirtaniiyah sadá harih. Human beings should always think of Him, they should always praise Him, they should always sing and dance in His name and make others sing and dance in His name too.” (5)

After reading the above guidelines, it is very clear that bhaktas should always praise the Supreme Entity, Parama Purusa.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Longing for praise is deadly

Ananda Marga ideology states, “The followers of the path of shreya will naturally have to fight against their saḿskáras of preya, their animal propensities. They will have to control their…longing for praise.” (6)

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Worst of all, those people, by hankering after others’ praise, become worse than ordinary people.” (7)

By the above teachings it is evident praise leads to one’s downfall.

Voice of skeptics

In Ananda Marga philosophy, there are some teachings that state that Parama Purusa should always be praised. Verily, as Ananda Margiis we do all kinds of spiritual practices: sadhana, kiirtan, and singing bhajans etc. And in these practices we are calling and praising Parama Purusa. At the same time, our Ananda Marga scripture also states that humans should not desire to be praised as it is harmful. For any bhakta, these two points are 100% complementary.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

However, some skeptics openly challenge: On the one side Ananda Marga teachings issue the warning that praise is dangerous and harmful, and on the other side the guideline is given that Parama Purusa should always be praised. And that is the point this letter has addressed and verily reconciled.

Parama Purusa does not suffer from any want

Here first is another reply to their accusation that, "Parama Purusa is looking for praise."

One should have this logical understanding firmly set in the mind: Parama Purusa has created this whole universe. He always remains in nityananda (eternal bliss). He does not need anything from anyone in any sphere of life. Parama prakrti is at His calling and can provide whatever He wishes. Indeed Parama Purusa does not need humans to do anything for Him, including praise.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, "“O Lord, Thou art the creator of this universe. This universe is full of gems and jewels. So do You require anything from a poor man like me? Nothing. All the gems and jewels, everything, all the wealth of the world, belongs to You. And Your grhińii, Your spouse, is mahámáyá. She is Your spouse, and according to Your order and desire She will supply You with anything. In Nagpur You may say, ‘Oh, mahámáyá, I want a mango,’ and then and there it will be furnished. Mahámáyá is Your spouse, so there cannot be any want, there cannot be any shortage in Your store." (8)

So that is the reply: Parama Purusa is Bliss Personified and complete unto Himself. This whole expressed cosmos is His creation and He has no want, and thus does not need praise from anyone.

About sterilisation: why harmful

Prout philosophy states, “Vested interests do not favour population growth because this will mean sharing mundane property at the cost of their hoarding. Capitalism would like the extinction of the intellectual class as this would give it free scope for exploitation. The intellectual class usually belongs to the middle income group. Capitalists encourage family planning and birth control to check the growth of this middle class, thus these measures are a creation of the capitalist order.”
“Due to age-old superstitions the common people do not take help of these measures. It is the middle class intellectuals who adopt these practices and become the victims of them. A Proutistic order would vehemently oppose this move. There is immense potential for maintaining the population of the world. By scientific advancement it may be possible for human beings to live on tablets. The real glory of humanity lies in creating conditions for adjustment with natural processes rather than in curbing normal processes by artificial measures.”
“Artificial sterilisation means making males or females artificially sterile. This has certain adverse effects on the mind and body of human beings. Sterilisation brings glandular changes and changes in the hormone secretion of the glands which ultimately affects mental expression. Due to these changes a man may become like a eunuch.” (1)

Eradicating social stigmas

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Casteism is a burden on the Hindu society. All the year round they preach casteism but on the polling days they decry it. This is wholly undesirable. It is better to avoid all titles. Titles signify the caste. If casteism is to be wiped out, it is incumbent to discard the titles. It is commendable if everyone adopts uniformity on title – Deva *. Persons using a particular word more often will influence their minds with the meaning of that word. People are reluctant to use the word dása because this word signifies slavery. Whenever the so-called low caste people catch an opportunity, they declare themselves as belonging to the so-called elevated caste, etc. It is an ideal to become deva and for this reason Deva title should be adopted." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Titles of the present society have undergone considerable changes during the past fifty years, the cause being that everyone aspires to pertain to an elevated caste. The so-called Shúdras also use the sacred thread. This is only an effort towards the concealment of one’s identity. By this means, they conceal only their disregarded status. This is to be regretted. It is consequent on social debility that they harbour the desire for changes in their situations. It is out and out purposeless to convene All-India Conferences or particular castes. All of them desire to assert and establish their rights. This is simply misuses of energy and money." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The consent of those embraced must be sought for before renaming them in Saḿskrta. Language has got nothing to do with religion and as such, there is no reason for anybody depreciating the use of Saḿskrta. In this connection it may be added that the great emperor Aurangzeb used the term sudhárasa (juice of nectar) for mango (original Saḿskrta term for mango is ámra) and saddharma for Islam." (1)

So many areas of the globe are affected by caste, race, and communal feeling. Here above Baba gives the perfect antidote and solution to such narrow-minded and harmful thinking.

* Note: The title Deva should be suffixed to males and the suffix Devii should be suffixed to females.

Very applicable to Covid-19 era

According to Prout philosophy, "For the all-round welfare of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish."

"First people should not be retrenched from their livelihood unless alternative employment has been arranged for them."

According to Prout philosophy, “In the Pathan period and at the height of the Mughal empire, Zamindars or landlords were permitted to maintain military forces. This practice was banned at the end of the Mughal period and the start of the British period. As a result, many soldiers from military communities like the Bagadis of Ráŕh and the Cuyárs and Lodhas of Midnapur were retrenched from the armed services. Consequently, they became criminals. Even thirty to forty years ago, members of these communities were still engaged in antisocial activities, but now they have virtually ceased this practice. If these people had been inducted into the military or the police, they would have earned a proper livelihood without being compelled to harm the society. Their destiny would have been quite different.”

“Now you understand the consequences of retrenching people without arranging a suitable alternative livelihood for them.” (1)

Note: Here it should be understood that the term retrenchment means losing one's job. The worker has been dismissed, fired, or let go whereby they no longer have a job. The term retrenchment is commonly used in Australia and South Africa. People from other regions may not be familiar with this usage of the term.

Magic of thinking power

"That is, if one's object of thought is a thief, what will happen? What is the psychic process? When you think something, your mind is then and there divided into two parts. One subjective part, another is objective counterpart. And when you are thinking of a bad man, or a thief, what will happen? The objective counterpart of your mind will take the form of that thief, will take the form of that bad man, and slowly what will happen? Your subjective counterpart of the mind, that is, seer portion of the mind---one portion is seer and another portion is seeing. So, seer portion of the mind will be slowly converted into that bad man, and slowly you will become a bad man. So a bad man must not be your object of ideation, should not be your object of meditation. If you think of a bad man, you will become a bad man."

"You know, there is a particular insect in India, it is called pecasha-kiit'a. It kills cockroaches. You know the cockroach, that red insect? Yes, it kills cockroach. And cockroaches are very much afraid of that insect. So when a cockroach sees that insect, that insect becomes its object of ideation; that is, its objective counterpart of the mind  takes the form of---what? Cockroach. So what does happen? Slowly the body of the cockroach is converted into the body of that pecasha-kiit'a. That is, cockroach itself is converted into the form of its killer." (1)

Natural call: keeping clean

Namaskar,

Generally people soil their underwear / undergarments multiple times on a daily basis without even knowing that it happened. And if you raise the point with them they get frustrated. They cannot think that they became dirty. How does this happen?

Well, they go for natural call 5 - 10 times a day. When they finish passing urine then invariably a few drops or more release and stain their undergarments. This is their dirty habit that they think is normal. But those who are conscious about hygiene have the solution.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Overview of point #1

For Ananda Margiis, we follow the system given by the all-knowing Guru, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. He has given point #1 of Sixteen Points to address this very issue. This letter discusses the following points:

(a) Why the use of water after urination is important - why blotting paper should not be used to soak up the urine.
(b) The ideal quantity / amount of water to pour.
(c) The ideal temperature of the water? hot, warm, or cold. Sometimes in the hot season one‘s shaoca bottle gets hot.
(d) How it prevents incontinence.
(e) What is the harm of not following this system.

All this and more is discussed in this letter.

Purpose of cooling that area

Here are some of the great benefits of pouring one full litre of water or more over the genitals during and after urination.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

1. It cools down the genitalia and that keeps the tamasik vrtti in check. By keeping that area cool by using lots of water, then that tamasik vrtti will not dominate the mind. This is one tremendous benefit for any sadhaka.

2. Pouring large amounts of cold water over the pubic region creates an exchange of blood in that area which brings freshness to both body and mind. That circulation of blood nourishes all the glands, organs, nerves and cells of that region.

3. The muscles, nerves and overall biological system get strengthened by the use of adequate amounts (1 litre or more) of cold water.

4. It will prevent and eliminate bladder problems faced by older people who cannot control the flow of urine during the nighttime. That happens because the muscles and nerves weaken over time, but when cold water is regularly used then those bodily systems remain strong and intact, in which case one will not suffer from that problem in old age.

5. One other great benefit of using 1 litre of water or more over the entire genital area is that it will ensure that all excess urine is removed from the urinary tract, as well as from the bladder. This keeps the body clean and disease free.

Personal experiment

Experiment with this because by following point #1 of Sixteen Points proper even one time, one would notice a huge difference.

Indeed if anyone just pours one cup of cold water on the genital then there will be a little benefit and perhaps a touch more urine will release; but then if you pour a minimum of one litre of cold water slowly over the entire pubis region and groin, then very soon all the leftover urine that was in the bladder will easily empty. You will see at minimum 100ml or 200ml of urine release from the bladder. Normally that urine in the bladder will not release, but when a full litre of water is poured slowly, then it will. Whereas if just a little water is used then that urine remains in the bladder and even in the urinary tract itself - in which case it will crystallize and block the flow of urine.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Everyone is encouraged to try and experience this for themselves, and surely many margiis may already be using this amount of water, i.e. 1 litre. For those new to this, if one day they slowly pour extra water, they will see and experience the difference first hand. If they use more water, the remaining urine will be expelled.

Disease prevention

Bladder Stones: When excess urine remains in the bladder then there is the possibility for that to crystallize and form stones that can completely block the urinary tract. By pouring sufficient cold water after urination, then all the urine is released from the body and there is no possibility for the formation of bladder stones.

Moreover, if due to some disease the urine remains in the urinary tract then one is prone to stones. And the root cause or main problem is that one is not emptying their bladder regularly. So bladder stones are 100% preventable. The process of pour water slowly ensures the bladder is empty.

If you pour a small amount of water, such as only one spoonful or even just half a cup, then the entire pubic area remains warm, and there is little benefit. In that case the blood just stagnates; it does not vigorously circulate as when a full litre or more of cold water is used. Hence the muscles will not get nourished or strengthened.

After years of not getting adequate nourishment, those muscles and nerves become weak. That is why when people reach 60 years of age, many lose control over the flow of their urine. On an involuntary basis, urine just releases. That is why older people have to use pads or diapers in their undergarments - because anytime in any 24hr period they may suffer from incontinence. They have an ongoing drip. It is unfortunate that many have to face this humiliation when it is so preventable by using an adequate amount of water.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Certainly, this happens with kids too because they do not have the requisite strength to control their urination; hence they do "bedwetting" etc. But in later childhood that strength or ability to control develops. Naturally then all adults have that control as well. Just they lose it over time. However, this is not an eventuality or function of age; it is a only a function of poor life practices. If one slowly pours an adequate amount of water over the entire pubis region, then those nerves and muscles will remain strong even into very late age. Then one will have proper control over the flow or urine.

Unfortunately, most of the population is unaware about this so this has turned into a serious problem with the elderly - 99% of the very elderly people seem to suffer in this way. All in all, this is a well proven formula: It is your choice whether you want to (a) not use any water, or (b) use one spoonful, or (c) one cup, or (d) one litre of water during and after urination.

How cold water nourishes the area

In naturopathy, a similar cooling technique is used to heal and cure the body of problems and Baba has given this as a tub bath. (1) In this practice the core is soaked, but the limbs remain outside the tub. This water therapy is used to treat various diseases. Here the whole point is that cool or cold water is needed to both maintain and cure the body.

If a certain part is weak or diseased then the treatment is to pour cold water over it and by that way the blood will rush all around. Due to this exchange of blood, the area gets properly nourished. If cold water is not used, then there is no exchange of blood and hence no nourishment - it is then that that gland becomes weak and susceptible to disease.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So we should all be vigilant to use at least a litre of cold or cool water after and during urination. Actually this technique of using a full litre or more of cold water after urination has many, many benefits. This pouring of water around the genital area is highly important when doing half-bath too; this is a well-known practice in Ananda Marga.

When Baba first introduced the checking of 16 pts then during dharma samiiksa He explained that when doing half bath then one should pour water over the whole area from the low belly to the feet. That is the best way to do half-bath and that is Baba's system. It is not just that water is sprinkled on the toes and a few drops on the genital. Rather from the pubic region all the way down, lots of water is to be poured in order to cool that entire region. Then one will get the true benefits of half-bath.

Conclusion

Those who use an eyedropper as their shaoca think that using one teaspoon of water is the way - since that is how they do it while traveling - and they use that for the whole day. This is their ritualistic and meaningless way of following this rule.

We should understand that the teachings of Ananda Marga are universal in nature - they are for all. On this earth, there are some places that are extremely cold and other areas that are arid and dry like a desert and suffer from a scarcity of water. In that case, Baba has given the common solution that using even a little water is acceptable. Likewise, when acaryas are traveling by train or plane or bus, they may be carrying just a small shaoca manjusa, in which case using a little water is acceptable. It has some benefit - it is better than nothing. But the shaoca manjusa should not be like an eye-drop container.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

To get the full benefit, however, one should pour one litre or more. Whenever circumstances permit we should use a full pitcher of water after urination, not just that small shaoca manjusa we use when traveling. So long as one is not in a drought-stricken area this should be the approach.

We should remember that Baba's teachings are to be practiced - they are not merely rituals. And by practicing we get the realisation of what works best. Although when traveling we may "adjust" and use a smaller container of water, whenever possible we should use a full litre of water, or more.

We should follow Baba's teachings of point #1 of Sixteen Points in a rational manner. Some think that since it is not practical to use a lot of water when traveling then it is fine to not use a full liter of water when at home or in a jagrti. To them the reply is, try it just once and see the benefit.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Yogiiraj

"Complete seeds of welfare are embedded in Sixteen Points"

Baba has given us all the teachings for living a healthy life - one which is disease-free. Point #1 of Sixteen Points has much value. By following it and sharing it with others, to margiis and non-margiis alike, then they too can get the benefit. On this matter, as with all His teachings, we should guide and serve as many as we can.

Ananda Vanii states, "...In order to march ahead on the road of human welfare, we will have to strengthen ourselves in all the arena of life. The complete seeds of welfare in all the spheres – physical, mental, moral, social and spiritual – are embedded in the sixteen points. Hence be firm on the sixteen points." (2)

Infinite ocean

"Maner májhe kon se káje, ácho bolo ná, kono bhávanái lukote ná pái, e kii yátaná..." (Prabhat Samgiita #2033)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, You are hiding in my mind. Which type of liila are You playing, please tell me. You are remaining in the depths of my heart - listening to all my thoughts. Now it is impossible to hide anything from You. What a “plight” this is for me. Baba, there is nothing that I can keep secret anymore. Everything You know. What a supreme drama. But there is one benefit: I am not helpless; You are always there to help me.

Baba, Your liila, Your divine play, is very vast - like an immeasurable infinite ocean. To understand Your grand drama is impossible. When I go to measure the depths of Your liila my whole existence is lost. My soul becomes one with You, i.e. my "I-feeling" is lost. My existence remains Only as consciousness.

Love personified Entity, Baba, I do meditation to get You, but, if You do not want to be held, please tell me what You want. Your wish is my desire. Don't You know this? Baba, You are my everything...

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #2033

Parama Purusa is that all-knowing Entity

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “The Cosmic Consciousness knows everything; He does not need to study books to learn or understand anything. Some may question how he can be so well versed in all branches of knowledge. Human beings always read and forget; in fact they learn only to forget. But how does Parama Puruśa remember so many things? Here lies the difference between human beings and the Supreme Entity; He does not learn only to forget; in fact He does not even learn – He just knows. Everything is within His mind.” (1)

Under no circumstances you are ever alone

Ananda Marga ideology states, “So living beings are preoccupied with their individual occupations. Those who remain away from Him may not realize it, but those who are near can see that Parama Puruśa sees everything. Those who shut their eyes think that no one in the world is seeing them. When a hunter attacks a hare, the hare covers its eyes with its ears, and thinks that as it cannot see the hunter, so too the hunter cannot see it. But people must always remember that Parama Puruśa is ever with them, and by this they derive great benefit. The only difficulty in this is that Parama Puruśa can see everything and on certain occasions He discloses their secrets. But the benefit is that under no circumstances are they ever alone, or weak, or helpless. As Parama Puruśa is always with you, you will never be in trouble, so you should never be unnecessarily worried.” (2)

Operative strategy of religious exploiters

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Religion is practiced for the fulfilment of mundane aspirations. This is the reason why a class of clergymen emerged centring around the religion. Ultimately the adherents of these religions become mere tools in the hands of vested interests. With the awakening of nityánitya viveka in human minds and the opening of the door of scientific knowledge, it will not be possible to deceive the people in the name of religion or by holding out the lure of happiness in the next world. The vested interests are quite aware of this fact and hence strive to keep the masses lost in the darkness of ignorance. Like parasites, they manoeuvre themselves to misappropriate, by injecting fear and inferiority complexes, a lion's share of what the ignorant masses earn with their sweat and blood." (1)
