How sadhaka’s sadhana ruined + 2 more

How sadhaka’s sadhana ruined

Namaskar,

India, and in particular the Hindu religion, has a long history of worshipping multiple gods and goddesses. Within Hinduism, there is a dizzying myriad of gods and goddesses whose number keeps on growing. This approach is wholly antithetical to our standard in Ananda Marga. Sadguru Baba guides us on the necessity of pointed bhakti for a singular Divine Entity. Unfortunately, some who grew up in this environment of a plethora of deities and entered into Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha could never adjust with the notion of one Supreme Entity, one single name, one object of ideation, one ista mantra, one-pointed bhakti, and calling Parama Purusa with one name.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Why worship of multiple gods is harmful

Question: Why are Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna songs present in Prabhat Samgiita if they are not for Ananda Margiis?

According to Ananda Marga ideology, Ista is one - not many. This ethic leads to the cultivation of pointed bhakti and spiritual attainment. That is why in Ananda Marga we only sing those Prabhat Samgiita compositions that are for Baba. Those songs that are for Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna contravene our cult of bhakti. Prabhat Samgiita songs related with Shiva and Krsna are for the followers of Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna. Those are not songs that sincere Ananda Margis should sing for their spiritual practice such as in paincajanya etc. We are to learn Prabhat Samgiita songs related with Shiva and Krsna only for the sake of teaching others - to guide non-margiis.

Mind bifurcated & sadhana ruined

In various discourses Baba has taught us that the mind is one and if an aspirant uses multiple names to call that Divine Entity then the mind will become balkanised and sadhana will be ruined. That is why Baba's strict warning for the all-round development in sadhana is that there should only be one ista - not many. Those calling that Supreme Entity using various names like Krsna, Shiva, Radha, Rama, Sita, and countless other ways are confused and wasting their time. By using various names, the mind will become balkanised and unable to concentrate.

In Ananda Marga, Baba has given 16 points - one of which is the point of Ista. Ananda Margiis must be strict in Ista. In the practical realm that means that although there are countless names of Parama Purusa, but for bhaktas and disciples of Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji, the Ista is Baba, not Lord Krsna, not Lord Shiva, not goddess Durga, not Gaunga nor various other deities. There is no important entity besides Baba.

So when singing bhajans / spiritual songs one should not call, “O' Lord Krsna be gracious”, or “O' Lord Shiva be gracious.” Because that will bifurcate or balkanise the mind. If one's Guru is Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and one is requesting His grace, then they should not call out to Lord Krsna, or Lord Shiva, or Goddess Gurga asking for grace.

Those doing Ananda Marga sadhana plus other religious services like church sermons, namaz, Hindu rituals, and Islamic and Jewish call to prayer etc are wasting their time. Such persons are most degraded and they will not realise anything. Their sadhana will be dry. Their sadhana will never bear any fruit because this type of toxic worship bifurcates or balkanises the mind.

Harmful ritual

In the below quote, one dogmatic follower is doing puja and calling out the names of countless gods and goddesses, and Baba is mocking that scene because that type of chant is not only useless - but harmful and a waste of time.

Sadguru Baba says, "A person whom I was very close to, a relative of mine, used to recite the following after taking bath: “Victory to mother Káli, victory, victory to Káli, victory to mother Káli of T́han T́haniá, victory to mother Káli of Dakśińeshvar, victory to Bábá Táraknáth, victory to Bábá Vaidyanath of Deoghar. O, Fathers! None of you should think that I am leaving out someone's name.” After this he would say, “O, gods and goddesses, please forgive me if I have omitted any name inadvertently. Please assume that I have mentioned your name also.” Does this yield anything at all? One says “victory to mother Káli of Kálighát” and in the same breath one says “victory to mother Káli of T́han T́haniá.” It signifies that the mind is moving both towards Kálighát and T́han T́haniá. Can the mind become concentrated in this way? Certainly not." (1)

By the above teaching it is very clear that Ananda Margiis should not say, “O' Goddess Parvati please be gracious, O' Lord Rama please be gracious, O' Lord Vishnu please be gracious, O' Lord Ganesh please be gracious, O' Lord Krsna please be gracious, O' Lord Shiva please be gracious.”

If one repeats so many names then the mind will become balkanised, and sadhana will be ruined. That person cannot progress in the spiritual field. That is what Baba's above teachings guides us. Then what should we do? Ananda Margiis must only say, “O' Baba Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji please be gracious.”

Out of fear worship countless deities

In the below scene, there are shelves in a typical type of puja room (place of worship) common to Indian Hindu households. In Ananda Marga, we would equate this as being their sadhana room. On display, they have numerous gods and goddesses on the wall. There are some small idols as well. And everyday Hindu worshipers recite various songs or shlokas, to please all those deities - one by one. The fear complex has been injected in the mind that if they only worship one deity and not all the others, then they will be in trouble. Those other deities who are left out of the worship become frustrated and furious and they will lash out and bring about the ruination of those worshipers and curse them. So out of fear those Hindus worship countless gods and goddesses. They are dominated by the dogma that there are innumerable gods and each one controls various aspects of life. Ananda Marga ideology condemns this dogmatic approach type of dogma.

Dogmatic margiis do multi-deity worship

Those raised in dogmatic Hindu families who came into Ananda Marga, some of them still carry this old dogma with them. That is why in their puja room they keep photos of numerous deities like, Lord Krsna, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, the elephant god Ganesh mounted on a rat, the monkey god Hanuman in his langota, eight arms goddess Durga, goddess of wealth Laksmi mounted on an owl, ten-armed goddess Kali, Lord Jagannatha without arms and legs, the idol of Shiva’s phallus, and so many gods and goddesses including some real human beings like Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Shankaracarya etc. These humans are also treated as gods.

When such aforesaid dogmatic margiis do their Ananda Marga sadhana they chant the names of those deities along with their ista mantra. And when the opportunity comes they prefer to sing those Prabhat Samgiita related with Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna. All because of their dogmatic old mindset: It is very hard to give up the Hindu dogma of multiple deity worship.

Such pseudo-margiis have many istas Lord Krsna, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji, the elephant god Ganesh, the monkey god Hanuman, and so many gods and goddesses including Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, and Shankaracarya etc.

Whereas, those who are strict margiis only have one ista Baba Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. So those strong, sincere margiis are strict in 16 Points and do not have multiple Istas. They have one-pointed bhakti for Baba Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. For such dogmatic Indian margiis this point is extremely difficult. Even after reading the teaching from Baba - which appears in numerous discourses, still such dogmatic Indian margiis are confused: They cannot give up their Hindu dogma as they continue to worship Lord Shiva and Lord Krsna.

in Him,
Ragatmika'

Those doing Ananda Marga sadhana plus other religious services like church sermons, namaz, Hindu rituals, and Islamic and Jewish call to prayer etc are wasting their time. Such persons are most degraded and they will not realise anything. Their sadhana will be dry. Their sadhana will never bear any fruit because this type of toxic worship bifurcates or balkanises the mind.

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Thus we see that ideation is association with one or the other idea – knowledge, action or devotion – just as meditation is associated with ideology. Thus in meditation and ideology, the spiritual aspirant is moving toward the singular Supreme Entity, the pinnacled goal. If the mind accepts two goals, two Lords, the mind becomes bifurcated.” (Subhasita Samgraha - 18, The Cult of Spirituality – the Cult of Pinnacled Order)

Some overseas suffer in a similar manner

This above guideline is not only for those born on the Indian subcontinent etc. Those Ananda Margiis coming from the Semitic religions also suffer from similar problems regarding this point of Ista. Some from the Christian, Judeo, and Islamic backgrounds carry their religious dogma with them when they enter into Ananda Marga. They have attachment for their past religious photos, statues, and rituals etc. And in Christianity and Islam (shia) there is also multi worship for satan, an equally powerful negative God, and they perform the tomb worship of religious leaders. In addition, they offer their reverence to those old beliefs and dogmas and ask for boons. Such persons do not have the requisite strictness in Ista. So those from overseas regions should also pay heed to the guidelines offered above.

Hanuman story of one ista

Here is a very significant story about the mythological bhakta - Hanuman.

"When Hanuman was asked why he was so insistent on taking the name of Ráma and never taking the name Náráyańa, he promptly replied:

Shriináthe jánakiináthe cábheda Paramátmani
Tathápi mama sarvasvah Rámah kamalalocana.

“I know by philosophical analysis that there is no difference between Náráyańa and Rama, and yet I will channelize my mind towards One Entity and not many. For me there is no Náráyańa, there is only Ráma.”

"Likewise for the genuine spiritual aspirants there is only One Entity, and they rush only towards that Supreme One. Their minds move only in one direction, not in a thousand directions." (3)

In that discourse, Baba's pointed teaching in this story is that a sadhaka's spiritual feeling must be linked with one Ista - for Ananda Margiis that Ista is Baba Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. None else.

Special extra worship

Although on a regular daily basis - morning and evening - such dogmatic Hindus do their regular multiple deity worship, but then an extra puja comes on a special occasion for a particular deity. Every week or every month is allocated to pay homage to a different deity. Today is the puja of the monkey god and tomorrow or next week is reserved for the worship of Sarasvati (goddess of knowledge) or Durga puja etc.

Out of fear worship countless deities

In the below scene, there are shelves in a typical type of puja room (place of worship) common to Indian Hindu households. In Ananda Marga, we would equate this as being their sadhana room. On display, they have more than 50 gods and goddesses on the wall. There are some small idols as well. And everyday Hindu devotees recite various devotional songs or shlokas, to please all those deities - one by one. The fear complex has been injected in the mind that if they only worship one deity and not all the others, then they will be in trouble. Those other deities who are left out of the worship be frustrated and furious and they will lash out and bring about the ruination of those worshipers and curse them. So out of fear those Hindus worship countless gods and goddesses. They are dominated by the dogma that there are countless gods and each one controls various aspects of life. Ananda Marga ideology condemns this dogmatic approach type of dogma.

OUT OF FEAR WORSHIP COUNTLESS DEITIES

In the below scene, two dogmatic devotees are doing their puja worship. They are seated in typical type of puja room (place of worship) common to Indian Hindu households. In Ananda Marga, we would equate this as being their sadhana room. On display, they have more than 50 gods and goddesses on the wall. In the front there are some small idols as well. And everyday these Hindu devotees recite various devotional songs or shlokas, to please all those deities - one by one. The fear complex has been injected in the mind that if they only worship one deity and not all the others, then they will be in trouble. Those other deities will be frustrated and bring about their ruination and curse them. So out of fear those Hindus worship countless gods and goddesses. They are dominated by the dogma that there are countless gods and each one controls various aspects of life. Ananda Marga ideology condemns this dogmatic approach type of dogma.

Who can be forgiven and who not

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Those who perpetrate atrocities on collective life or on a particular human group, cannot be pardoned. In such cases pardoning not only reflects weakness, it also encourages injustice, because the oppressors become more tyrannical. In individual life, if an innocent person is oppressed by dishonest people, the person, if he or she so desires, may pardon the oppressors, just to test his or her capacity for tolerance or for some other reason. But if the oppressors torture a human group, in that case no single individual, as the representative of the group, can pardon them, and actually that person has no right to do so. If the representative acts beyond his or her jurisdiction, that person will be denounced by the group he or she represents. So it has to be said that pardoning is a practice for individual life only, not for collective life.” (1)

Note: The above teaching is difficult for some to understand. That is commonly people are confused about this. In this above teaching, Baba is guiding us that forgiveness is for individual life - only. Those who have eyes to see know that all around in the general society and inside Ananda Marga also, there are numerous injustices going on. These all fall within the scope of collective life. Nobody can excuse those culprits because they have harmed society on the whole.

In contrast, if someone stole your personal bicycle and the next day that person feels repentant and returns it to you and apologizes for their wrongdoing, then there are two options. One may excuse that person or not excuse that person. Baba guides us that it is better to excuse them for their wrongdoing - so long as that person is feeling repentant. Because it is an individual affair and the culprit is sorry for his misdeed etc. But in the case of organisational wrongdoing that harms the society etc, then there is no scope to forgive that wrongdoer. No one has the right or power to excuse them.

Due to all the aforesaid reasons, this is a very difficult situation for some to understand - especially lay people. So they follow their dogma and excuse everyone regardless, even the venomous snake that is lying inside their shoe ever-ready to bite them.

Cure Body pain by fasting + 3 more

Baba

Cure body pain by fasting

Namaskar,

I was blessed with the opportunity to attend Sadguru Baba’s darshan on a few occasions - one of which was in Patna during the year 1971. That was the unique occasion Baba clearly described why fasting is so important for our human progress and how fasting counteracts the negative effects of the celestial bodies during certain lunar days, or tithis.

Part 1: upward pull by celestial bodies

In this darshan, Baba begins by telling that due to the pull or attraction of certain celestial bodies like the moon and the sun, the liquid portion of the earth rises. Baba details how the tides of the ocean and sea levels are affected by the pull of the moon on particular lunar days: ekadhashii, or the 11th lunar day, pu'rn'ima', and amavasya.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(Note: Modern day sciences of geology and physics have verified this fact. The earth's oceans and tides are primarily affected by the moon etc and can result in tidal waves and other dangerous conditions.)

Then Baba began to systematically explain how even the liquid section in our human body gets affected on these lunar days (tithis). Because the liquid portion rises up and disturbs the regular functioning of the brain and other primary organs in the upper regions of the body. One's thinking and sadhana are adversely affected on these days.

(Note: Our bodies are 60% to 65% water / fluid, so when the liquid portion of the body is disturbed, the effect is quite dramatic and can even make people act in a grossly imbalanced and even crazy manner. That is why the term lunacy (meaning crazy or psychotic) stems from the root ‘luna’ meaning moon. Due to the effect of the moon, people lose their mental balance. This is also recognised in the common society.)

Part 2: the effect on the cakras

In the next sequence, Baba details the effects on the cakras. Because when the liquid portion rises up then the upper cakras are hampered. Under normal conditions, the vishuddha cakra (5th cakra), ajina cakra (6th cakra), and the sahasra'ra cakra (7th cakra) are purely for subtle and sentient pursuits. These cakras are primarily sattvika or sentient.

The manipura cakra (3rd cakra) to anaha'ta cakra (4th cakra) deal with both higher and lower works, both spiritual and physical activities. Baba has classified these as being ra'jasik, a mixture of crude and subtle. Then the two lower cakras - muladhara (1st cakra) and svadhisthana (2nd cakra) - generally deal with baser activities, as they are ta'masik in nature. But, as we all know, certain crude works need to be attended to in this life, so those lower cakras also have their purpose.

That is how Baba described it in this darshan. Now here comes the key point: On certain lunar days - tithis - like ekadashii, or the 11th lunar day, pu'rn'ima' (full moon), and amavasya (new moon), the liquid portion of the body rises up and disturbs the functioning of the upper cakras - i.e. the ra'jasik and sentient cakras. That means the manipur cakra all the way up to the sahasra'ra cakra are adversely affected.

(Note: Baba also differentiates between lunar days known as tithis and solar days known as din in Sanskrit. And it is these lunar days or tithis which create this disturbance in the body.)

On those aforementioned lunar days or tithis (ekadashii, purnima & amavasya), due to the adverse effect of the moon's pull and the ensuing rise of the liquid portion of the human body, those higher cakras cannot function normally. In turn, our entire existence is negatively affected. Our regular and higher functioning of mind becomes impaired.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Part 3: how yogis addressed this problem

The ancient yogis - being practical scientists and researchers - knew well that the upper cakras could not carry out their normal manner of functioning on those tithis, so they came up with a solution. And that solution was: fasting.

Next, Baba revealed one very interesting idea. He told us that when one fasts, a vacuum is created in the stomach - because there is neither water nor food in the belly - and that vacuum pulls the liquid back down. That brings relief to our entire system on these lunar days. In that case, when fasting during those lunar days like ekadashii, the higher organs are no longer hampered by the liquids which would normally rise up on those lunar days. Hence, the lungs, heart, thyroid, brain etc can function normally.

That is the great benefit to the physical and mental body during fasting days. Baba also then gave proof of this theory. He told that those suffering from arthritis and gout will experience worse conditions during ekadashii and other tithis. They will not experience any remission on these days. Because the liquid portions of the body rises up and creates problems for such patients. So for all these reasons and more, fasting is a necessity for human health and vitality.

Part 4: our practice in Ananda Marga

Then in a very sweet manner Baba began to discuss the fasting system in Ananda Marga. He explained that our fasting days occur on the following tithis: eleventh moon (ekadashii), full moon (purnima), and new moon (amavasya).

And He told how He did not prescribe four fastings to family people - just two, i.e. the two fasting days of ekadashii. That will help them greatly in their physical and spiritual life. Whereas, Wts are required to do four fastings as they need to engage in more spiritual activities. Baba was careful to explain that Wts are not, by definition, more spiritual than margiis, but clarified that due to the nature of Wt life, they have more spiritually oriented duties.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Finally, Baba added that all family people are welcome to fast 4 times each month, but for them it is not a requirement. Should any family person adopt the practice of fasting on purnima and amavasya, then they will not be questioned in any way. If they desire, they may freely do the four fastings.

Part 5: upa'vasa not ananshana

Baba then clarified that our fasting days are more than just days where we refrain from taking food. Not eating is known as anashana in Samskrta. But that is now our approach. We call our fasting days as upa'va'sa. Then Baba explained the meaning several times using various examples and definitions from the realm of linguistics, and we all repeated and replied.

Upa' means "near", and va'sa means "sitting". Hence upa'va'sa means to sit or reside or live near the Lord. Following is a quote from one of Baba's published discourses on upa'vas'sa.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Upa” is a Sam'skrta prefix. In Sam'skrta there are twenty recognized prefixes, and one of these prefixes is “upa”. “Upa” means “proximity”. And “Va'sa” means “to live”, “to reside”. The word “upava'sa” means then, “to live near the Lord”. “Upava'sa” – on these days of fasting, what are all spiritual aspirants to do? Mentally they should live near their Lord. On all other days they are to remain balanced between objective adjustment and subjective approach. On these days of fasting, however, on these days of upava'sa, one remains in closer proximity to the Lord than to one’s mundane duties. That is why these days are known as “upava'sa”. The word “fasting” does not represent the proper sense or proper spirit. The Sam'skrta term for going without food is “anashana” – “ana” means not, “ashana” means eating – not “upava'sa”. But these eka'dashii, amavasya and pu'rn'ima' days are days of upava'sa." (1)

The above passage was given in a discourse from 1978. It nicely complements what Baba told us that day in 1971 about upa'va'sa so I have included it here. During fasting, one may encounter difficulty in doing intense physical labour on that day. Some people may not experience any hardship, but for others doing arduous physical tasks may be beyond their reach. It varies from person to person.

In that case, on upa'vasa', one should engage in more intellectual and spiritual pursuits, and less in physical duties. One should goad the mind toward higher echelons of philosophy, ideology, and spiritual life. On these days, one should sit near Parama Purusa. Thus our fasting days are not just anashana (not eating), but upavasa as we are to pursue maximally in the spiritual realm and remain with the Lord.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

Two key points from this unique darshan are:
(1) A main function of fasting is to free the upper cakras from the negative effects of liquids rising up in the human body during certain lunar days.
(2) The operative factor is that a vacuum is created in the stomach due to a dearth of food and water and that vacuum pulls those liquids downward.

The benefits - physical, psychic, and spiritual - of fasting allow one to progress, despite the inherent difficulties of living on this earth. Bbaa has given a method and solution for every problem so we may reside eternally at His lotus feet.

Namaskar,
in Him,
Suresh

More benefits of fasting

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "On and around the times of new and full moon, one may observe that the gaseous and aqueous factors in the body rise up into the head and chest, creating an uncomfortable feeling. Therefore, if a person does not take food at these times, these factors will be drawn down from the higher portions of the body to the lower portions, thereby alleviating the uncomfortable feeling." (2)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "You should not depend on food too much. This is why I have prescribed fasting on four days a month for some people and two days a month for others, and personally I have proved by fasting for five years and ... months at a stretch that if people try, they can remain without food. If one's dependence on food decreases, one will gain more freedom in a particular aspect of life." (3)

Love-personified Entity

"A'mi toma'y cinini priyo, tumi a'ma'y sab diyecho…" (Prabhat Samgiita #3856)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, my Dearmost, for so long I could not recognise how sweet and caring You are. Even then, You showered Your grace, bestowed everything upon me, and drenched me in Your divine compassion. There is nothing that You have not done. All the good things in my life are because of You. Today, by Your ahetuki krpa', I understand that You are so merciful and love me immensely. Now I realise that You are love personified and have given me infinite blessings. Baba, I want to surrender my everything at Your altar. Please accept my sastaunga pranam.

Baba, You fill the flowers with honey and place the shining moon in the sky. You are the ocean of the nectar of divine love. As the Entity who is the embodiment of prema, You have made my mind merge into Yours.

Baba, You are the top of the seven lokas: bhú, bhuvah, svah, maha, jana, tapah and satya. You have spread yourself in all animate and inanimate objects, eternally  dancing with ankle bells in the vast universe amongst the moon, stars, galaxies, and everywhere.

Notes for Prabhat Samgitta #3856:

[1] Ahetuki Krpa: In the pandal during DMC when one Dada was on stage reading his purport of Prabhat Samgiita #228, then Sadguru Baba graciously corrected that Dada's definition of ahetuki krpa in front of everybody to make the matter clear to one and all.

Baba says, "In this universe of ours everything is causal; everything is hetuki. Everything is causal. Only three entities are non-causal, are of non-causal character. One is transmutation of non-attributional entity into attributional faculty. And second is creation of this universe. And the third one is the krpa of Parama Purusa. Parama Purusa is not to explain for His conduct when He does his krpa or where He attracts anybody towards Him. So these three entities - three items - are of non-causal character. The ahetuki krpa, that is non-causal blessing or non-causal gratitude." (4 June 1990 MGD)

How capitalists are anti-dharma

Prout philosophy states, "In a joint family every member is provided with adequate food, clothing, education and medical treatment, and amenities, as per their individual needs, according to the financial capacity of the entire family. If, however, any member of the family appropriates more grains, clothes, books or medicines than he or she requires, will that person not be the cause of distress to other members of the family? In such circumstances his or her actions will be certainly against dharma – certainly antisocial."
"Similarly, the capitalists of this modern world are anti-dharma, or antisocial, creatures. To accumulate massive wealth, they reduce others to skin and bones gnawed by hunger and force them to die of starvation; to dazzle people with the glamour of their garments, they compel others to wear rags; and to increase their own vital strength, they suck dry the vital juice of others."
