This one-tune dogma: only in Bengal

Namaskar,

As we know, kiirtana is an integral aspect of our spiritual practices. It is used individually as well as in many or our collective spiritual practices like paincajanya, dharmacakra, and akhanda kiirtan etc. In our collective kiirtan programs, an important element is to change the tune of the kiirtan every four or five minutes. That keeps the kiirtan fresh. Otherwise, if the same tune is played over and over again it becomes monotonous. Then the mind will lose its focus, begin to wander, and run hither and thither.

Baba has given more than 5000 compositions of Prabhat Samgiita and He has given the instruction to use those tunes for kiirtana as well. So there is no dearth of tunes. Our collective kiirtana programs should be filled with a diverse range of tunes and melodies etc.

Unfortunately, the trend in Bengal, and other places of late, has been to denote certain limited tunes for collective kiirtan programs. And they have designated one particular tune to be the final tune sung. That means this tune is always the last one at every kiirtan program. This makes the gatherings predictable and boring. But those kiirtan organisers in Bengal have been rigid - and they only allow one tune to be that last tune.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Karma’dhyas’a

How good deeds can be harmful

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now, those who advocate the supremacy of the doctrine of action should remember that only the performance of good deeds is not enough: one will have to be ready to undergo the reactions of good actions. After undergoing the reactions one will again have to come down on earth. And one will not always do only good deeds: bad deeds may also be performed. So one has to keep grinding along the cycle of actions and reactions, which seems to have no end. Yudhiśt́hir once said, “When I perform some deed, I do not expect any result: I surrender everything to Parama Puruśa.” That is, “I perform the deeds but I do not expect the results thereof – I immediately surrender the results of my actions. I am prepared to undergo the bad reactions of my bad deeds, but I do not wish to enjoy the good fruits of my good deeds: I offer those to Parama Puruśa.”" (1)

One should perform good actions with the ideation of serving Parama Purusa offering everything unto His lotus feet. That is the only way to free oneself from the worldly bondages and escape the cycle of life and death. If one serves for one's own petty enjoyment and gain, that will not suffice - one will be bound and degraded.

Re: Worry: counting kiirtana syllables

Namaskar,

I used to think I was being very good because I was listening to kiirtana all the time. I would play it even while I was sleeping. Then I read from Baba that it is best to sing kiirtana out loud. The louder, the better. But if you can't sing it loud, even then sing it soft. This is far better than repeating it inwardly. I know that beginning meditators do that. We have japa with Ista mantra. So this is what I understand to be inward. Guru mantra as well.

What seems the best plan is Kiirtana out loud whenever possible, and any spare moment one can do something inward, do dyana. Ista mantra goes on all the time.

Baba's Grace,
Bhaskar
