Baba demonstration: efficacy of Guru mantra + 3 more

Baba

Baba demonstration: efficacy of Guru mantra

Namaskar,

Baba has always done various types of demonstrations to give us a hands-on look regarding the subtle, invisible ways of spirituality. Using various mantras and forces of tantra, Baba would (a) withdraw the life-force from the human body and then make the body come back to life, (b) have sadhakas grab His toe to see others' past lives, or (c) use His cane to reverse an otherwise incurable disease. All these demonstrations, Baba has done to show us that spiritual force is something real, not something imaginary.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Because without that, a very new margii might possibly think that spirituality is just something make-believe because they cannot see its true effect or physical manifestation. It is just like how certain illiterate Indian villagers refuse to send their children to school because there does not seem to be any practical benefit of going to school all day and getting an education, since the child does not return home with anything tangible per se. Whereas if their child does not go to school and instead stays home then that small boy or girl can collect a whole bundle of sticks during the course of the day. When comparing these two outcomes, the villager concludes that it is far more beneficial for the child to stay at home and collect sticks etc, because going to school does not yield any tangible fruit.

Similar is the case with spirituality. If people do not see any tangible, practical result in the external world from their mantra japa, then a very new person might think it is useless or just a waste of time. That is why people are prone to follow avidya tantric gurus who say a mantra and magically make Rolex watches appear out of thin air etc. Because those followers see some so-called practical result. In His own manner, Baba would regularly put forth demonstrations and practical examples to show us that spirituality is the most subtle and powerful force in this universe. And this below story works in this very direction to teach us the inner value and special force of practicing 2nd lesson.

Meaning of ista mantra & Guru mantra

By the Ista mantra the sadhaka is 'lovingly calling' Parama Purusa and in the Guru mantra the sadhaka is remembering that 'He is watching me'. These are the beautiful ways Baba has described these mantras. So in our life on the path of bhakti, we are to practice these two mantras accordingly. In the repetition of the Ista mantra one is calling out to Parama Purusa in a deeply loving and personal way. And by Guru mantra one recalls His ever-present gaze, helping to keep Him in mind in their daily actions and spiritual life. Guru mantra does not mean the mantra Guru uses, but rather here the term “Guru” means that this mantra is very significant and very important for the practitioner.

Why madhuvidya’ before every work

It is understood that second lesson, Guru mantra, madhuvidya, and brahmacarya are all one and the same. Baba's guideline is that Guru mantra should be taken before doing any work. That does not just mean taking second lesson before performing an initiation or before starting a long journey. Rather we are to do second lesson always - before each and every action. Before bathing, before going to work, before making any small or big decision, before sleep etc. Always.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So that means upon waking up one should repeat Guru mantra, then it should be repeated before attending to natural call, before washing your hands, before taking bath, before doing asanas, before eating food, before washing the dishes, before getting dressed, before answering the phone, before going on the bus, before your meeting, before going to the store, before buying anything, before exiting the store, before calling a friend, before preparing food, before reading an article - in all times and before all activities one must ideate and repeat their Guru mantra. By this way, sadhakas develop the right habit and feel His divine vibration before starting any work, big or small.

Some dogmatic communities think that one should only repeat their mantra when involved in certain works, but that it should not be repeated while on the toilet (commode), or when picking up garbage etc. But in Ananda Marga, we do not adhere to such distinctions. One's mantra should be used in all circumstances. So in Ananda Marga, we repeat our mantra before each and every activity. A new margii may feel that it is just something ritualistic and not very meaningful. With practice, however, they will learn.

Some of our acaryas feel that already their lives are "fully dedicated for Baba" then in that case what is the need to practice all the lessons. They were thinking that, 'Already my life is holy' etc. Such is the misunderstanding of a few dadas. Baba wants to teach us that we are always to keep the mind absorbed in spiritual ideation, and that second lesson is one of the best ways to do this. And by so doing, all kinds of negative microvita get destroyed and we will be protected. That is also one of the benefits. And that is what the below story also highlights.

Before entering Baba's room

It was the general style that Baba would go to the hall to carry out reporting. This happened for years and years; and then in the latter era, around 1989-90, Baba would call people to His room for conducting reporting. All along it was understood that it was Baba's rule that one must do second lesson when entering His room, or wherever He was holding reporting.

On many occasions during various reporting sessions or even general darshan, Baba would lovingly point out how a particular person did not repeat their Guru mantra upon entering. Baba would explicitly state their name(s), and make them stand in front of everyone. The goal in all of this was to get people habituated to using their Guru mantra consistently before doing any work.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

From time to time, Baba told that if anyone did not repeat Guru mantra then they would have to face the consequences. So it was everyone's long-standing habit to repeat their Guru mantra when entering Baba's room or place of reporting. This was especially the case with PA Dada and the various central workers who were regularly around Baba. It became part of their life to automatically repeat their second lesson when walking into Baba's room or any other place where Baba was.

Baba's divine liila: what happened that day

Then one day, Baba called several Dadas for reporting in His room, and one of the Dadas in that group was usually posted in a far away place. He was a senior Dada no doubt, but since this Dada was not usually around Baba, it was not his habit nor was he consciously aware about the long-standing rule to repeat Guru mantra before entering Baba's room, or wherever Baba was conducting reporting.

So when reporting was called, then all the regular Dadas repeated their Guru mantra upon entering, but this other Dada just walked into the room without taking second lesson. Immediately, that Dada fell on the ground unconscious. No one could revive him. He was just lying there lifelessly on the floor of Baba's room, near the entryway.

Baba immediately expressed His feigned fury towards all the Dadas present for not reminding and warning this other Dada about the dangers of not repeating Guru mantra when entering His room. Baba lovingly scolded them again and again for being remiss in reminding him. Because now this Dada was basically dead on the floor. This liila’ continued for several minutes and all the Dadas stood there silently - accepting Baba's rebuke.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Finally Baba lovingly said, “What shall I do - shall I save him?”

Then all the Dadas replied, “Yes, yes, Baba, please save him.”

Then in His divine liila, in a playful manner, Baba then countered: “But do you not understand that this boy committed a sin by not repeating Guru mantra before entering the room. Should he not get punishment for this?”

The room once again became quiet.

Then Baba said, “Now who is advocating that he should be saved.”

No one replied; none of the Dadas came forward. The room was silent.

(Those Dadas were thinking that Baba wanted this Dada to be punished; so they kept silent thinking that they were complying with Baba's wish.)

Then, with His magical charm, while smiling at everyone, Baba again turned the tables, “You are all worthless! Someone is suffering terribly and lying on the floor nearly dead and you do not think that he should be saved. Have you no compassion! Have you no shame! You are all worthless human beings.”

Then quickly the Dadas all spoke up and begged Baba again and again to please save their fellow Dada. They understood Baba's liila’ and loving manner.

And accordingly Baba was gracious and that Dada was saved, i.e. he was granted life and became completely normal once again.

Very practical & very powerful

This was Baba's special way of teaching everyone that second lesson is something very practical and very powerful and that it should be incorporated into our life - before we undertake any action. This is the very clear-cut lesson Baba was giving through this above scene. And everyone present understood and never forgot it.

So none should become lazy or remiss in any of their spiritual duties. Rather we are to always remember that Guru's grace is everything and by taking second lesson we are automatically remembering Him and getting His grace. And by that way, we are protected from so many negative forces. Because, our Ananda Marga siddha mantras are the most potent force in the universe as they are empowered by Gurushakti - Guru's infinite grace.

From the above story we should always remember to repeat our Guru mantra - before each and every thought and before each and every actions-- no matter how big or small. Always we should repeat our second lesson mantra.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

By Baba's grace through the regular and proper use of Guru mantra our mind will always be in a positive flow - ensconced in His bliss. In that case, no harm can come to us.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "You should remember to use guru mantra regularly before every action. One attains success in the field of action by the right application of guru mantra. Some of you, I do not say all, often forget to use guru mantra before starting an activity. If you do forget, repeat it after completing the action. When one no longer makes such a mistake, that is, when one always remembers to use guru mantra...one experiences an unbroken flow of bliss in one’s mind." (1)

Feigned anger?

The Propounder of Ananda Marga, Sadguru Baba, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji, is the embodiment of dharma. One of the characteristics of a dharmika is akrodha or non-anger. Baba perfectly embodies this quality. Those close to Baba understood that He never becomes angry. Only He would feign anger or show as if He was angry in order to teach and impress upon others the severity of a particular situation. So never can one truly say that Baba was ever furious etc. Just He would pretend to be angry externally in order to lovingly guide His bhaktas.

Relevant quotes on Guru mantra & Guru's grace

By second lesson, by repeating Guru mantra, we remember our Goal and enter the abode of Brahma. That is Baba's special guideline.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "One should move ahead in one’s mission after determining one’s goal. Once the goal is fixed there remains almost no possibility, of error; hence you should always remember your goal. But once you fall into the trap of error it leads to danger. This is the reason why I advise people to remember their guru mantra, to always remain aware of the goal. The souls of those people who practice sa'dhana' in this way enter the abode of Brahma." (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "When you conduct your worldly activities, beginning with buying supplies from the ration shop, buying tickets for a sporting event or buying a railway ticket, everything is fraught with anxieties. Whatever you do, repeat your Guru mantra in your mind. In other words, while doing your work take the name of Parama Puruśa so that your action will be sanctified. If you find that you are not in a position to do anything else, then sing kiirtana loudly. In this way you will always remain close to Lord." (3)

Main dharma vs secondary dharma

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "All dharmas have upadharmas [secondary characteristics]. Human life is no exception. For example, to provide for your family you require some sort of employment – be it agriculture, trading or business – you have to keep the house clean, feed everyone, and so on. These are the secondary characteristics included within the fundamental human dharma. What normally happens in human life? People get caught up in the secondary characteristics. For instance, when eating delicious food people often say “How good it tastes! But if it only had a bit more spice in it, then it would taste even better.” Being engrossed in the secondary dharma, people all too easily deviate from their main dharma. In ancient India, the usual custom was to offer a part of one’s meal to God before eating it. The spirit was, “May I remember You with every bit of food.” In Ananda Marga there is a system of applying guru mantra before commencing any action. The psycho-philosophy behind guru mantra is to transform the secondary dharma into the primary dharma at the psychic level. If this were not done then one’s secondary dharma would predominate. Much precious time is wasted by those who follow their secondary dharmas." (4)

Ananda Marga ideology states,  "“Brahmacaryam” – that is “moving in Brahma while eating”. What sort of eating? The person is getting all sorts of physical, psychic and supra-psychic pabula from the Cosmic Body of Brahma. Thus he who is moving in Brahma with the help of his second lesson, guru mantra, is brahmacárii. He always remembers the fact that all his movements are within the Cosmic Body of Brahma." (5)

How to acquire immense power

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Suppose, there is a drop of water in an ocean. When the drop feels its unity with the ocean, the drop no longer remains as a drop, it becomes the ocean. But when it feels its separation from the ocean, it is nothing but a drop of water. So, when a human being feels his/her unity with the Supreme Lord and feels that he/she is not an ordinary person, but the blessed child of the Supreme Father and when becomes one with him, then he/she is no longer an ordinary person. He/she acquires immense power, immense vitality, infinite vitality and this is your Yoga in the physical sphere. You should always remember that a man or a woman is an ordinary person when separated from the Supreme Father, but he/she becomes Supreme when one with the Supreme. This we do with the help of our Guru Mantra. This is Yoga in the physical sphere." (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In the case of a psychic disease or when one gets afraid while coming in contact with those luminous bodies or recreated minds, those preśitamánasas, what is the medicine? The medicine is, do kiirtana or devotional chanting. Do kiirtana for one minute or repeat your guru mantra, and that “ghost” will instantly vanish into thin air. So under no circumstances should you be afraid." (7)

What to do before setting out on a journey

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now I think there are so many graduates amongst you, and doctors – if you are asked to appear for the examination, the medical final, will you be able to pass just now? No. You have forgotten everything. Your smrti, that is, your memory, will not help you. The smrti has become – what? Very dilute, very faint, due to constant waning. What should be the best smrti? I think your ácáryas told you that you should repeat and recite …..Internally, Iśt́a mantra and guru mantra." (8)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If people become more and more regular in the application of their guru mantra, then on one hand they will be able to perform more and more physical activities, and at the same time they will be able to avoid creating new saḿskáras (reactive momenta). Regarding vipáka it can also be said that human beings must treat all the objects of this universe in the proper perspective as the various expressions of Parama Puruśa, and learn how to apply madhuvidyá even while discharging their mundane duties." (9)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "You shall not take into account the dates and stars while setting out on a journey. You may, as necessary, set out for your destination after ascribing Brahma-hood to your journey through guru mantra. If you are to consult the dates and stars at every step, you are to carry an almanac with you all the time – something which is truly contrary to nature." (10)

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. If you want to forward this story then attach the following yellow section with the story:

This will be treated as the standard protocol.

Flow of Your grace

"Áji, tomári parashe tomári haraśe, dharańii ut́hilo hási…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0734)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, today, basking in Your ever-flowing krpa of joy and moved by Your warm touch, all mortals - all my brothers and sisters - have started smiling. Everyone is wholly ensconced in Your cosmic rhythm and infinite bliss. From all corners, human beings everywhere are expressing their heartfelt feeling by proclaiming: "Supreme Entity, my Dearmost, I love You so much.”

Most Compassionate One, in the flow of Your grace and blessings, the dark fog has lifted in the mere blink of an eye. Those sinners were like that dark fog and were trying to extinguish Your brilliant effulgence. Today those very sinners have suddenly vanished from the world in a flash. Spirituality, universal ideology, and teachings of neo-humanism are flourishing. It is Your krpa.

Those thoughts which were previously lying suppressed in seed form, in the realm of imagination, have today descended down into the core of all mortals. All have started thinking about bhagavad dharma. With this kindling of light on earth, every jiiva is now trying to merge into the seven realms - and play the divine flute in unison, with one Supreme Goal in mind...

Demons devoid of spirituality

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “In the most developed minds, an infinite thirst becomes awakened. By attaining the supreme rank of Brahma – bliss personified – that infinite thirst can be quenched. The sustained effort to attain that blissful state is called dharma sádhaná. But if human beings do not find the proper way to satisfy their thirst, they go astray. That is, those who do not follow the spiritual path may perform harmful actions at any time. Even those whom society respects as intelligent or learned may, in reality, be no better than “polished satans”, or what the scriptures call “demons”. Our modern society is full of such people. They talk about universalism like parrots. They have no defined ideology in their individual and collective lives, and merely dedicate themselves to the deception of the human race as they strive to serve their petty self-interests by any means, fair or foul. We cannot expect any beneficial contribution from them.” (1)

Way to purify the kosas

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "The paincakośas shall have to be perfected, but how is it possible? They can be consummated only through the practice of yama and niyama [and the various lessons of sadhana]. The annamaya kośa is perfected through asanas (physical postures). Yama and niyama sádhana perfect the kámamaya kośa. The manomaya Kośa is perfected through pránáyáma. Through pratyáhára the atimánasa kośa is perfected. The vijinánmaya kośa is perfected through dhárańá and the hirańmaya kośa through dhyána. Only dhyána samádhi gives access to the soul. Pious persons are those who are earnest in their efforts to perfect the paincakośa. Human existence consists of the five kośas and spiritual practice is eightfold. This spiritual practice is Dharma. That which does not provide for the explanation of the paincakośa is not Dharma, but sectism." (1)

Ananda Marga ideology says, "The loka above this where the hiran'maya kos'a (subtle causal mind) is established is what we call devarloka (satya loka). When sa'dhakas merge their petty I-feeling from the realm of the devarloka (where this I-feeling is not very much evident) -- into the bearing of the Great, they establish themselves fully in Sagun'a Brahma (Qualified Consciousness -- the collectivity of Parama'tman, Macrocosm and Microcosm). In this loka, if the whole of the I-feeling (asmita) is shattered and merged in Purus'a, the unit attains total identification with Nirgun'a Brahma (Unqualified or Objectless Consciousness). This loka is the satyaloka -- this indeed is the Brahmaloka. The one who is established in this loka is alone the Brahman'a (Bra'hmin')." (2)

Witnessing Baba's demonstrations + 3 more

Baba
Witnessing Baba's demonstrations

Namaskar,

The period of 1969-70 was a very special year for Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha. It was called “the year of demonstrations”. During this time Sadguru Baba demonstrated and explained many different spiritual powers and various samadhis. Again and again He told us that these powers are higher mental and spiritual states, and are not “supernatural or miraculous”; they are perfectly natural, but they are so rare that people are in awe of them. Baba recounted that our aim is Parama Purusa (Supreme Lord), and that if we desire occult powers, our downfall is certain. Those were the days that no one who was present can ever forget. I had recently come to India, and by long and intense meditation, my eyes were being opened to the greatness of Baba. What I saw and experienced changed my life completely.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

At that time, the central office of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha (AMPS), where Baba stayed and directed its entire operation, was in a small town in northern India called Ranchi. The AMPS “world headquarters” was a small, concrete-block building with about five rooms. To me it looked like a dilapidated little shack, and at first I was shocked by its simplicity. It was only gradually, as I did more and more meditation, that I was able to realize that the greatness of Ananda Marga did not lie in external trappings of showy prosperity. It lay in the hearts of the margiis, burning with divine love and the indefatigable desire to serve humanity. I realized that the great movements of history have all started like this – not with buildings, but with an idea – not with external glamour, but with the invisible internal dynamism of its members.

Burst my heart with joy & flood tears into my eyes

About three-fourths of a mile down a narrow dirt road, that was impassable due to mud during the rainy season, was the jagriti and the Ananda Marga School, where Baba came twice a day to give His discourses and hold His demonstrations. Even as I write about this now, there is a deep stirring in my heart because those were the deepest experiences of my life. In those days, I was born again. I was irrevocably changed. I felt completely and totally in love for the first time in my life. Not human love – which compared to this seemed shallow and wavering. But the love that pours into and out of every cell of your body; the kind of love that sometimes feels like rock inside, so solid that nothing – not doubts or fear or pain – can budge it. This love Baba gave me, most undeserving me, who every day as I rode silently to the jagriti on the rickshaw, thought over and over to myself, “Why me? What did I do to deserve this? There must be some mistake!”
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Twice a day, at about noon and again about 6:00 pm in the evening, Baba would come to the jagriti for His discourses. The jagriti was a large brick building; inside was a spacious dirt-floored hall with a stage in the front where the large Sunday morning discourses were held. Margiis from all the neighboring towns and villages would attend the Sunday discourses. There were several smaller rooms that still shine in my memory as one of the most special places on this entire planet. There was a little room about four square meters in size, with one or two windows and a wooden cot in the front covered by a blanket. Down the path alongside the building, past that little room, Baba used to walk, protected from the burning Indian sun by his bodyguard, dressed in crisp khaki uniform, walking beside Him and holding a black umbrella over His head. Baba’s clothes always seemed so white, whiter than any white I had ever seen before. His white figure was so radiant that sometimes my eyes could hardly see due to its brightness. How strange it was that just the sight of that small man walking slowly with measured steps under the umbrella down that corridor would burst my heart with joy and flood tears into my eyes – and make me freeze motionless as tremendous spiritual waves engulfed me, and I could not move or think – only dissolve in bliss.

When I sat before Baba, words cannot express

When Baba had sat down on the bed, various persons were called into the room for personal contact. There was a long list of bhaktas each day, and the rest of us waited anxiously outside the room, talking softly about Baba or doing meditation. There were different people there every day.  The dadas and didis who had come from distant parts of India to report to central headquarters and were now coming to see Baba, just as a calf, frolicking in the meadows all day, must return from time to time to its mother to drink deep of her nourishment. There were margiis from different parts of the country and even from Nepal who took special leave from their jobs and packed their whole family into the crowded Indian trains to sit at Baba’s feet for a few days and gain the inspiration and strength to return home and set an example for all the worldly people they came in contact with. There were the local margiis who used to come every day, at lunch and after work, to see their Baba. Then there were the central workers who sometimes were able to take time out from their work and visit the One they were working ceaselessly and tirelessly for. I remember once, one very devoted Didi had come for several days in a row to see Baba, and when He heard that she was again outside, He feigned anger and said, “What! She is here again? Doesn’t she have any work to do?”, and so she swallowed her devotion – what a lump in the throat – and returned to her work.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In that small room, as we all (only about twenty of us then) sat crowded and motionless before Baba, there was a vibration unlike any I have felt before or after. When Baba paused, it was so silent you could hear your heartbeat, and even on dark and cloudy days it seemed as if a brilliant radiance filled the room. When I sat before Baba I had a deep feeling that I am at a loss to explain. I felt as if I were sitting in infinity-- as if all space had dropped away from around me, as if all time had disappeared; the past was forgotten and the future did not exist. I was sitting on the eternal present, bathed in an indescribable peace and happiness. It was as if I had always been there, and would always remain there, and everything else was a flickering dream that had disappeared like the colors and sounds of firecrackers falling from the sky. The feelings I have for Baba are too deep to flow out of the pen. You who have felt, know. You who have not felt, will one day feel, and then you will know that it is this you have been waiting for all your life, all your lives.

Spiritual energy in room was so high

As we watched in awe, Baba would perform one amazing demonstration after another, describing each one like a science professor in a laboratory. First, though, Baba would become very serious and scan the whole room, looking at all of us – probably seeing our mental colors to see if we were in a sufficiently sensitive spiritual state to appreciate His deep teaching. Then He would say sternly, “Sit in a proper asana!” and everyone would snap their backs up straight. Then Baba called a devotee to come forward and sit in front of Him and say, “Sit in padmasana and do meditation.” After a few moments Baba would reach down and hold the bhakta on the back of the neck, just at the base of his brain, where the spinal cord enters the all-knowing mind, which knows past, present and future. By His touch He was awakening that devotee’s deepest layers of the mind, and through that devotee, usually, Baba would perform the demonstration.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In this way it was clearly shown that it was only Baba Himself who could have infinite knowledge and infinite powers, and that He could awaken them in people. The words He spoke about Parama Purusa, about divine love, about unity and divinity of all beings – sank deep into my heart like a sound vibrating in a deep well and I felt as if He were speaking my own heart’s echo. There were hundreds of demonstrations in those days – every morning and evening for months, but often no record was kept of them. Who felt like writing anything in Baba’s presence, in His powerful vibration. In fact many people present did not even see or hear these demonstrations – the spiritual energy in the room was so high they just closed their eyes and were lost in deep meditation, until they felt someone pulling at them to stand up as Baba was leaving the room. Often the next day Baba would ask a devotee to describe what he/she had learnt the day before, and the devotee would smile embarrassingly and answer, “I don’t know, Baba.” And Baba would laugh and say, “Never mind, never mind, sit down, sit down, he did not see! Alright, who can tell...”

In that "insignificant little corner of the world..."

Fortunately during one period Baba asked one dada to take notes and keep a record of the demonstrations. After the demonstrations were over, Baba would arise from the wooden cot, shower His blessing upon everyone, and slowly walk out of the room. Everyone would rush to help Him as He walked through the door. Sometimes He would pause a little and look into the eyes of a devotee whose face was gleaming with spiritual purity and love. Baba would look at the devotee with His look of love and say simply, “Tum kaesa ho..(how are you)” or perhaps pinch the devotee gently on the cheek like a father pinches his child. But these simple words and that simple affectionate touch conveyed tremendous spiritual blessings, and afterwards you could see light radiating from the head of that devotee. He had been transformed by Baba’s touch, by Baba’s love.

After Baba had left to do His noon sadhana and take His lunch, usually we would all sit for meditation because the spiritual waves were so strong no one could move. Sometimes as I left that holy place, as I gradually returned to normal consciousness, I would look around me at that little room in that old brick building with a lumpy dirt floor at the end of a narrow dirt road in one of the smallest cities in one of the poorest countries in the world, and feel like I was in the nucleus of the universe. I used to laugh aloud and think of the wonder of it all – in this insignificant little corner of the world, the greatest miracles on the planet were being performed! Here in this plain little room tremendous forces were being unleashed and harnessed, unknown and deep mysterious knowledge was being revealed, and hearts and lives were being changed irrevocably. All this by drops of grace of Baba!

~ In-depth study ~

The above is a well-written, heartfelt portrayal that stands as an excellent example of how a Baba story should be presented. The writer has beautifully described the scene and wonderfully depicted the spiritual vibration of those days with Baba. It is an inspiring account.

I was also present in Ranchi on many occasions those days and can attest to the veracity of this story. Everything the writer has described is 100% accurate. What is expressed is not an exaggeration; nor is there a hint of hyperbole. The story is a proper depiction of what took place.

Having His divine proximity, getting personal

All in all, this story rekindled my own sweet and blissful memories of being with Baba in Ranchi. It made me remember those times of longing for Him and running after Baba's car on the dusty road. That was so blissful. There was so much love and yearning in the air. I vividly recall attending and participating in those sadhana demonstrations, receiving His blessing, having His divine proximity, getting personal contact, attending general darshan, watching and seeing Him on a daily basis, and receiving His grace, as well as so many other auspicious occasions with Baba.

After reading this story, everything became fresh and alive. I cannot forget how His mere presence was enough to bring one into the height of spiritual bliss and realisation.

My most revered & cherished One

"Jyoti-ujjvala práńocchala, tumi priya tumi priya..." (Prabhat Samgiita #2229)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, You are the brilliant refulgence - full of vitality and my most dear, as well as the Supreme Controller of this vast universe. You are my Dearmost. By Your own glory You are glorified. You are ever-adorable, my most revered and cherished One, my everything.

Parama Purusa, in so many ways I want to bind You in the bond of affection, but I do not have the strength to catch hold of You. With my limited energy and whatever means I have, I try to catch You - but it is impossible for me. Instead, I remain engrossed in my own self - unit "I", which is preventing me from coming close to You. Please transform my “I-feeling” and make it Yours.

Baba, with my own capacity I will not be able to get You. With the thread of the spider's web of my meager efforts, I will not be able to bind and hold You. Please grace me, and allow Yourself to be held. This is my only request to You. Kindly keep this in mind.

Parama Purusa, in my heart, I have a deep longing to have You. Be merciful and grant me this by Your causeless grace. Baba, come in my shravan, manan, niddidhyasan, and dhyana and make me Yours...

Occupation, spiritual practice and mother tongue
are very important to human beings

Prout philosophy states, “For the all-round welfare and development of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish. To avoid this and to safeguard the interests of all people, the leaders of society must ensure that cardinal socio-political principles are strictly followed. Otherwise, individual and collective progress can never be achieved.”
“There are three cardinal socio-political principles which should never be violated. First, people should not be retrenched from their occupations unless alternative employment has been arranged for them. Secondly, people should not be forcibly converted from one religion to another. Thirdly, no mother tongue should be suppressed. Occupation, spiritual practice and mother tongue are very important to human beings. If the sentiments associated with them are hurt, human beings will be deeply affected. So, you should never violate these cardinal socio-political principles.” (1)

Prout philosophy states, “If any group tries to violate any of these three cardinal socio-political principles, you should immediately oppose them with a thundering voice and sufficient force. Victory will be yours, because you are supporting the collective psychology. But before launching any movement, you should make sure that the masses are conscious of their exploitation, otherwise the movement will not be successful. Although it may take some time to raise the consciousness of the masses, ultimately you will be victorious.” (2)

Sadhana demonstration: the nadiis + 2 more

Baba
Sadhana demonstration: the nadiis

Namaskar,

Here is a story about one general darshan with our dearmost Sadguru Baba in Jamalpur. Some sadhakas may recall that in those days of 1965 Revered Baba was very particular in guiding us in spiritual life. He was quite strict with all sadhakas about following a proper sadhana routine and doing all the lessons etc.

Of course, in various ways and forms, this was true all the way up to 1990. But, at that time in 1965, it seemed that Baba was being especially gracious and personally giving so many special techniques and beautiful explanations for improving everyone's meditation.

That special General Darshan

Looking back, we can only say that this was His causeless grace. On this particular occasion that I am about to recount, Baba was in a most gracious and charming mood when He came for General Darshan. Upon entering, He was smiling so sweetly, and we all felt a special vibration in the air.

Baba was moving very slowly and delicately. And, when He gently sat down on His cot, then He began, little by little, emphasizing the deep importance and great significance of sadhana. This was the norm those days. And in His own beautiful cadence and rhythm, He began addressing many complementary points
for meditation such as proper food, right atmosphere, good company (satsaunga), physical exercise (asanas) etc-- all of which aid one in the practice of sadhana.

Included in this discussion also was Baba's special teaching about breathing and the correct use and utility of the nostrils. And He descriptively told us how long, long ago the great yogii Sadashiva was the first to give this special science of breath control known as svarshastra.

Baba tells inner secrets about nadiis

Then Baba began to unveil some of the inner secrets regarding the three na'diis-- the ida', piungala', and the susumna. Baba was specifically guiding us that:

(1) When the piungala' na'dii is expanded then the right nostril is dominant. Baba told us that this state is conducive for doing physical activities such as running, jumping, eating etc.

(2) When the ida' na'dii is expanded then the left nostril is more active. Baba explained that this is more conducive for engaging in psychic work, intellectual studies, and psycho-spiritual pursuits. Then Baba went on to describe that one na'dii may be more or less dominant to varying degrees. For example, sometimes the ida' na'dii might be 70% dominant and the piungala' na'dii is doing 30% of the breathing. Or the ratio could be 90%-10%, or 60%-40%, or any combination thereof. And sometimes one na'dii may be controlling 100% of the breathing.

(3) Then Baba paused, and He told that there is a somewhat rare situation when both the na'diis-- both the nostrils-- are working equally: 50-50. This occurs when the susumna channel or centre pipe is expanded fully and it is applying equal pressure on the other two na'diis.

Baba then told us that in that unique situation, when the susumna na'dii or the susumna channel is nicely expanded such that both the nostrils are working equally, then that is an ideal time to do sadhana. He told us that in this circumstance the mind easily gets concentrated. Thereafer, Baba lovingly directed us that we should always be ready to utilise that time for sadhana. Next, in that very room, one very special event came to pass, which I will never forget.

Baba’s demonstration that day

On that divine occasion, there were eleven of us sitting at His lotus feet immersed in His darshan. With His infinite compassion, Baba sweetly guided us all to check our nostrils and see which na'dii was dominating. Everyone present acknowledged that both their nostrils were equally open-- thus signifying that the susumna na'dii was expanded fully.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Everyone present understood that this was nothing but Baba's divine grace and then, upon His grand direction, we all started doing sadhana. And, almost instantaneously, we could feel a very strong vibration as the kulakundalini began to rise up through the various cakras until finally, by His magnificent grace, we all become ensconced in His divine flow and heard that omnkara dhvani– the sound of realization. We were all completely swept up in the vast ocean of His cosmic bliss and tears of joy were streaming down from everyone's eyes.

After some time, Baba brought our minds back to the here and now, and our awareness returned to being in that small room with Baba before us. In that moment, we could all sense how the sweet smell of the lotus flower was permeating all around and a blissful vibration was dancing through each and every cell of our existence. It was truly a memorable experience.

Of all the different occasions that I was blessed to have Baba's direct darshan, I shall always hold and cherish the above experience as being quite dear. I will always feel that, on that particular occasion, Baba truly showered His causeless grace on us and allowed us to experience that real internal communion with Him.

Conclusion

Perhaps now more than ever, this opportunity is open to us all as sadhana is the means for communicating with Him and realising our true nature. So, in this short human life of ours, we should be most careful to utilise the best moments-- the most opportune moments-- for doing His sadhana.

Here is Baba's blessing upon all sadhakas:

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "One who has followed the straight path of the sus'umna' canal upwards does not return. He becomes one with Parama Purus'a, losing his separate existence." (1)

Thus, when the susumna canal is active, i.e. when both nostrils are open, then we should all be vigilant to use that time for sadhana, by His grace.

Namaskar,
Ram Sahay

More facts about na'diis

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Among the three principal nad'iis [psychic-energy channels], the sus'umna' is straight while the two on either side of it, the id'a' and the piungala', curve right and left." (2)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "In the yogic treatises the left na'd'ii is called id'a', the right na'd'ii is called piungala', and the one between them is called sus'umna'. The id'a' is also called candra na'd'ii [moon channnel], the piungala' su'rya na'd'ii [sun channel] and the sus'umna' a'ka'sha ma'rga [sky channel]." (3)

The science of svarshastra

Ananda Marga philosophy explains, "The process of breathing, depending upon whether the breath is flowing through the right nostril or the left nostril or both nostrils, influences people in various ways. It was Shiva who determined what kind of activity should be performed, depending on which nostril the breath was flowing through, and depending on whether the id'a' or piungala' or sus'umna' channel was active. He set down specific rules and regulations as to when one should undertake physical, psychic or spiritual activities. He further instructed when and in what circumstances one should do a'sanas, pra'n'a'ya'ma, dha'ran'a', dhya'na, etc. This science, which Shiva invented and developed, was known as svara sha'stra or svarodaya [science of breath control]." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The process of breathing has a great influence on the human mind and self, or soul." (5)
