About EMS & unity

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In the past, people who remained engaged in bloody battles over religious issues reunited after the battles were over. Similarly, on language issues also there were numerous clashes, but after some time, the mutual bickerings were forgotten and as result of synthesis, a new mixed language emerged. Thus, instead of reacting to apparent differences, one should seek internal unity. The various differences which split society must be removed in the interest of collective welfare. In order to do that, one must look for the common link, the points of affinity, in the multifarious lifestyles and diverse expressions of life. The points of affinity have got to be encouraged by all means and the differences must be discouraged. If the various differences such as customs, manners, food, dress, language etc. are given undue importance, the clashes and conflicts will increase. And if those differences are made to unite forcibly, that involves risk. That’s why we will have to adopt a positive approach rather than a negative one. Thus, our policy should be, “Aspects of unity should be encouraged and aspects of disunity should be discouraged.” If this principle is strictly followed there will be an increase in human unity and a corresponding decrease in the degree of disunity. I have already said that no difference lasts long. So if the aspects of disunity are discouraged, the human society will gradually find a universally acceptable link.” (1)

Role of EMS: unite disparate parties

Many are aware that "EMS" (Ek Manav Samaj) is a branch of our organisation AMPS where we sit down with people from the various religions and talk, plan social service programs together, and foster bonds along lines of common interest. So one of the chief aims is to bring people of different faiths together so they can discover points of commonality, and develop friendship and amity. At the same time, we look to discourage any perceived differences, and overcome any feelings of hatred or anger. This is one of the objectives of EMS, which is a branch of AMPS.

Religions can be brought together only on the platform of social service. For instance, Hindus and Muslims may jointly serve the homeless and beggars - all peoples - not just Hindus or Muslims. That will be a productive, joint program between Hindus and Muslims. But if you invite those same Hindus and Muslims to talk about and participate in the Islamic ritual of Ramadhan and the Hindu ritual Durga puja, then that will never work. So social service is the best way to create a harmonious relationship between the various religions. So when bringing the various religions together, one must ignore their dogma and harmful rituals. That is the central idea of the EMS branch of AMPS.

In other words, we do not encourage meetings based on religious rituals where the various religions have two diametrically opposite ways of doing. That means we do not bring people together for burials, prayer, or curriculum development etc as members of the various religions radically disagree on those points. Instead, we turn to fostering feelings of commonality by collaborating with them in helping the poor, running medical camps, distributing food, and teaching literacy etc.

Conclusion

If this approach is taken then rival and inimical parties of the various religions will come close. And by working together, over time they will try to understand one another. The older generations may not change their viewpoint very easily, but the newer generation will be inclined to choose the way that is more scientific and adopt that in their practical life. By this whole approach, Ananda Marga ideals will be victorious.

There are many avenues for doing the pracara work of Ananda Marga ideology and this is one pathway. As far as possible, we should try this.

Where to find points of unity

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Those who are creating new problems by overemphasizing unimportant issues instead of solving the immediate social needs are the enemies of humanity. They are dividing the country into battlefields of conflicting interests in the name of national unity, causing severe damage to humanity. In order to establish unity and welfare in the country, the common points of affinity must be found in the following three spheres:
1. socio-economic sphere,
2. psycho-sentimental sphere,
3. spirituo-sentimental sphere.” (2)

Overcoming external differences

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “With the help of the previously mentioned factors it would be easy to unite the human race. At the same time, however, it should be remembered that there are certain differences in the society which should be taken into proper consideration. These differences are usually removed through natural fusion. It is not possible to eradicate them by force. When human beings come close to each other with a genuine feeling of unity, when they share the common joys and sorrows of life, those external differences gradually vanish as a matter of course. In the human society there are four main types of external differences: food, dress, language and religion.” (3)

Historical background of today's disunity

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In the absence of knowledge of common psychology, people of different religions try to destroy other religions. This has resulted in the spilling of rivers of blood. In ancient India the Aryans tried to impose their own Vedic religion on the Austric community. In the Buddhist era, particularly during the reign of King Bimbisára, Buddhism was imposed on other religions. Later, the followers of the Sanátana Hindus forcibly converted the Buddhist and Jains into Hinduism. During Moslem rule Islam was imposed on India, Persia and Egypt. Similarly, countless Jews were converted into Christianity. During the British period attempts were made by Christian missionaries to subvert Hinduism and impose Christianity on the indigenous population. All this led to mutual animosity in the world of religion.”
“Those who indulged in vain criticism and slandering instead of trying to remove the factors diving the human race, created even more problems for society. That’s why there is more disunity than unity in the human society today.”
"It is the Sadvipras who must take most of the responsibility to remove the disunity. Sadvipras will not give any importance to the points of difference, but will continuously inspire and encourage the common bonds of unity and thus strengthen humanity. Only then will the human society become one and indivisible. Only then will it be worthy of being called a “human society”.” (4)

Do you want to see Paramátmá

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “It is said about the way in which the Paramátmá [Supreme Soul] can be seen in the átmá: In the same way that something can be seen in a mirror, a person can see the Paramátmá by analysing the átmá...Just as a reflection is seen in water, Parama Puruśa can be found in the gandharvaloka, that is, in the study of musical science." (1)

Note: Everyone knows that in our Ananda Marga philosophy it is explained that atma is a reflection of Paramatma. It is just like seeing the reflection of the sun in a mud puddle. It is not actually the sun but a reflection. That is similar to how our atma is a reflection of Paramatma.

When bhaktas do kiirtana and bhajan in a very intense way then a deep vibration is felt in the mind and a blissful feeling comes. That blissful feeling of intense kiirtan is coming from the gandhavarloka - i.e. higher state of mind. In other words, from a lower state your mind gradually reaches a higher state where you feel that special bliss which is gandhavarloka. Those who are good sadhakas have realised this in their life many times.
