Understanding sexual indiscretions + 2 more

Baba

Understanding sexual indiscretions

Namaskar,

In the plant kingdom, the duty of the male plant is to spread its pollen to a maximum number of females. And if the pollen from one male pollen is received by a female then it is sufficient and it does not need more. So the roles of male and female plants are quite different. Male plants have to distribute maximum pollen, and female plants have to receive from only one. Females have no connection with others.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Similar phenomenon in animals & humans

A similar thing also happens in the animal kingdom. The alpha male controls the entire pride. And it spreads its genes across the entire herd / group. The alpha male’s tendency is to spread seeds as much as it can. In contrast, the female has to receive from one, and it does not have any desire to receive from multiple males for the purpose of procreation.

A similar psychology or instinct is present in human beings also. For procreation purposes, males like to do maximum, and females prefer to remain with one - the alpha one. The inner science is what is the best procreation partner to care for the child. Promiscuity only results if the female perceives that her male is not an alpha in which case she will aim to connect with the alpha. This is all the play of instinct.

Goad mind to spirituality; overcome vrttis

By common sense, one can easily understand through AM philosophy that regardless of how instinct works, the human mind is more powerful than instinct. Those guided by or controlled by instincts are all animals. Those animals in human form are governed by their instincts; they are involved in sexual crimes and do not have control. Whereas, if one develops the mind through spiritual practices they can easily overcome the trappings of the various vrttis / instincts.

As discussed above, males are more prone to have connections with many females and that causes harmful disturbances in society.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

This is the reason  that domestic violence occurs in many marriages. The male wants to have more, and females do not. This gives the clear-cut signal that those who marry to satisfy their sexual lust are on the wrong path. Coercive mating in married life is a sexual crime in many countries. Many ignorant people marry with this misguided purpose, and later on they get depressed, repent, or commit a sexual crime and sit in jail their whole life. Best would have been to find a spiritual path to tame their animal propensities and goad their tendencies in another direction. Then they would have been much happier.

Conclusion

Instinct plays a greater role in all creatures, including human beings. In the hoary past, humans used to live in the wild on trees, and children used to hold the branches in order not to fall down. And they used to hold onto the mother's body when their mother was jumping from one branch to another. The same thing we see today in newly born infants. Their fist is tightly closed and gradually it becomes very strong. Even after millions of years this instinct is still present in modern babes. In the same way, those primitive alpha human males used to have that connection with countless females, and nowadays the same thing is going on in society. Even though society has been completely transformed, still that old instinct is dominant from plant life to animal life and in human life.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Those who are sadhakas - or those who take to spiritual practices - can step by step overcome and gain control over these base propensities.

In Him,
Nrtyarata’

You avoided my calls

"Toma'ke d'eke gechi kato jiivane..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3789)

Purport:

Baba, O' Parama Purusa, with longing in my heart I have been calling You for so many lives. Why did You remain distant. It may be that You heard me but You did not listen, or that You saw me, but You did not look towards me. So many lives passed and I just remained in darkness. O' my Parama Purusa, You play Your unkind liila with one insignificant being like me. You remain unkind.

O’ Parama Purusa, Baba, I always tell You the feeling of my heart, and by Your grace I know that resonates deep in Your inner core. You are intimately aware about whatever I think each and every moment; nothing is hidden from You. Because You are the all-knowing, love-personified Entity, that is why without my telling anything You understand my most intimate thoughts. The feelings of my mind expressed in my core can be heard in the resonance of my mental reflections.

O' Parama Purusa, whether You listen to my call or not, that does not give me any pain. If You hear it that is good, and if You choose not to that is also fine. The main thing is that my everything is dedicated to Your service. With deep longing my duty is to call You day and night. So I continue whether You respond or not. I only want solace in the mind, for what cause You turned deaf ears to me and avoided my call. Baba, You have graced me so much. Keep me under Your loving care…

Kiirtana distinctions

Here is an English summary of Baba’s Bangla teaching of RU [EGD] 31 December 1982, A'nanda Nagar:

If it is told to only sing kiirtan then it means nam kiirtana, i.e. Baba Nam Kevalam. If it is told to sing songs etc that means Prabhat Samgiita or pad kiirtana Prabhat Samgiita. If it is based on the sketch of a storyline that means pala kiirtan. In the morning, I told you to do kiirtana, and everyone started singing pad kiirtana, but that was wrong. If I say do kiirtana then that only means nam kiirtana.

Here is more on this topic as there are three main types of kiirtana:

(a) Na'ma Kiirtana: This is the singing of Baba Nam Kevalam, in its many forms including avarta kiirtana, nagar kiirtana, katha kiirtana (see note below), and akhanda kiirtana etc.

(b) Pad Kiirtana: This is when a poetic verse is put into a kiirtana form. Various margiis turn a stanza of their bhajans into this type of kiirtan in order to glorify the Lord. And there are many PS compositions, between the numbers of #0140 -> #0160, that fall into this category as well.

(c) Pa'la' Kiirtana: Pa'la' literally means “turn”. First one person sings then the audience responds. Thus pa'la' kiirtan is done in the style of call and response, where the main singer sings a stanza of Baba Nam Kevalam and the general public responds. But there is another aspect as well. In between the audience's participation, the main singer(s) perform at length, singing the glories of the Lord and recounting His tales and stories in the form of a dialog or prose that is often sung. And then it will go back in BNK kiirtana where all join in and sing. So it is a spiritual account or history about Parama Purusa that is led by trained sadhakas, who invite the audience to join in and sing.

Note: Katha kiirtana is when a collection of people gather to sing kiirtana and share stories in between singing BNK kiirtana.

The courts, poverty, & injustice

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Another glaring example of the neglect of human values is the present judicial system. When arrested, people have to stand in the dock for the accused and face a trial based on evidence and the lawyers eloquence, no matter if they are guilty or not. A criminal who can afford to hire a reputable lawyer may emerge from the legal processes unscathed, whereas an innocent person of meagre financial means who is unable to appoint a good counsel, may end up in prison. If a thief is set free it is a crime, no doubt; but if an innocent person is punished it is a severe dishonour to humanity.” (1)

Note: In His above teaching Baba brings to light the tragedies that occur in society when poor people cannot get a proper attorney. Sadly, in spite of their innocence such impoverished persons get convicted of heinous crimes. On the other side of the coin, wealthy, anti-social criminals hire the more famous, reputed lawyers and are declared innocent.  That is what happens in the US, and other places. Take the case of one innocent poor black man who was unjustly found guilty in a murder case and sentenced to capital punishment. Yet, some selfless, philanthropic attorneys picked up his case and he was freed. But it took a long time, as he spent 30 years behind bars.

Exonerated after wrongful imprisonment

From the “Innocence Project” an innocent person was rescued from death row. And in total there may be thousands upon thousands of such cases.

"The Innocence Project focuses on cases in which DNA evidence is available to be tested or retested. DNA testing is possible in 5-10% of criminal cases...As of July 2017, 351 people previously convicted of serious crimes in the United States had been exonerated by DNA testing since 1989, 20 of whom had been sentenced to death. Almost all (99%) of the wrongful convictions were of males, with minority groups constituting approximately 70%.The National Registry of Exonerations lists 1,579 convicted defendants who were exonerated through DNA and non-DNA evidence from January 1, 1989 through April 12, 2015. According to a study published in 2014, more than 4% of persons overall sentenced to death from 1973 to 2004 are probably innocent." (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

So it is obvious that capital punishment is a terrible blot on human society. When handing down a verdict, no rational judge or jury can say with 100% certainty that justice was done in that particular case.

For instance, if after hanging an innocent person it was discovered he did not do wrong, then what can be done. Nothing - it is too late.  A better, more just, society will ensure that top legal support is provided to all equally, irrespective of one’s financial standing. In addition, that society will understand that setting a criminal  free is not as harmful as convicting an innocent person and sentencing them to death. When that happens, the common people lose faith in the justice system and that is the worst outcome.

That is what has happened amongst the black population in the US. In comparison to white people, innocent black people are dealt very long periods of incarceration. For example, having a single dose of heroin can lead to a 20 year prison sentence, without any option for parole etc.

Be ready for Prout + 3 more

Baba
Be ready for Prout

Namaskar,

Most do not realise that communism and capitalism are brother-sister philosophies. Both are based on materialism. In communism, the state controls and hoards all the wealth; that means those top government post-holders bask in extravagant luxury. And in capitalism, private entities accumulate all the riches; that means a select few individuals preside over a large percentage of the wealth.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Prout philosophy states, "Capitalism and communism are the same internally. Fruits of the same variety may have different colour skins, but their seeds are the same. Capitalism and communism are fruits of the same variety." (1)

From one materialistic philosophy to another

Thus East Germany rolled from one materialistic philosophy into another - where a disproportionate number in society become “have-nots”. When material goods and money are limited, then a society of “haves” and “have-nots” results where there is tremendous wealth disparity. That was the case with communism, and it is the case with capitalism. Now 35 years later, there are a growing number of Germans who long for those days of old. The reason for this is that capitalism has run amuck.

Capitalism has run amuck

We must bear in mind that all in society do not have the same intelligence and talent. And in capitalism, those with greater capacity ruthlessly exploit the masses. There is no check on this. The masses quickly become beggars while the corporate elite rule over 99% of the wealth. Indeed, those countries that recently joined the ranks of capitalism and the free market economy - like Russia, India, and China, along with eastern Europe - have the most striking degree of wealth disparity.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

And unlike communism, in capitalism those have-nots will just get left behind. It is akin to a runner in the Olympics. If that runner lags behind and falls to the ground, the other competitors do not care. They do not look back and extend a hand. Just they keep racing ahead. Same is the case of the materialistic model in capitalism. Those who lag behind are forgotten and left to wither away by themselves.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the wealth disparity multiplied many fold. Some few became ultra-rich, while many more fell into the depths of poverty, languishing in dire straits. That is why some reminisce and fondly look back upon that era of the Berlin wall where at least they were granted the basics of life. The key element here is that  in capitalism there is more selfishness and more competition, and it is not easy to keep up.

Put Prout in position to fill the vacuum

In the near future, once again there will be a vacuum. And all the competing philosophies will be jockeying for the top spot. As Ananda Margiis, our foremost duty is to spread the message of Prout and see to it that next time Prout is a major player and in position to fill the vacuum. Only then will true peace and harmony exist in society - and the gross disparity of wealth will be eliminated, just a problem of the past.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

With regard to today’s global socio-economic climate, Prout is certainly the need of the day. Capitalism has worn out its stay. The divide between the rich and the poor is immense. Only Prout has the rational response and solution.

In Him,
Shriimukha

With the fall of communism in 1989 a vacuum was created. At that time, Prout was unable to fill the space. The competing philosophy of the day was capitalism and that easily took hold. Those in the former East Germany had seen from afar the material wealth of the west and were allured by those riches. So they felt bringing in the free market economy of capitalism was a tremendous boon.

Prout philosophy states, "Human hunger is limitless. If it is channelised in the direction of worldly objects, conflicts between one human being and another are bound to persist because mundane wealth is limited. Excessive hoarding of wealth within one group implies scarcity in another." (2)

Prout philosophy states, "Capitalism and communism are the same internally. Fruits of the same variety may have different colour skins, but their seeds are the same. Capitalism and communism are fruits of the same variety." (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Communism is also a socio-economic-political theory based on materialism. In communist society people’s psychic urges and psychic pabula instinctively run after material acquisition and crude enjoyment." (4)

Prout philosophy states, "The capitalists of this modern world are anti-dharma, or antisocial, creatures. To accumulate massive wealth, they reduce others to skin and bones gnawed by hunger and force them to die of starvation; to dazzle people with the glamour of their garments, they compel others to wear rags; and to increase their own vital strength, they suck dry the vital juice of others."
"A member of a joint family cannot be called a social being if he or she does not possess the sentiment of oneness with the other members, or if he or she does not want to accept the lofty ideal of joint rights and the principle of rationality. According to true spiritual ideology the system of private ownership cannot be accepted as absolute and final, and hence capitalism cannot be supported either." (5)

Essential for sadhana

Here is the English summary of Baba’s Hindi teaching of Átmatiirtha, V24 25(H), 22 Nov 71 Purnea, Bihar.

After involving in mundane works one is generally plunged in worldly thoughts. So then if one sits in sadhana, in the mind you will think that, “Tomorrow I will go to Arariya town. Indeed I have to go in the morning. I will have to catch the first bus.” You will sit in sadhana and go on thinking like this. In this situation what should you do? Before sitting for sadhana you should do kiirtan-- either 2 minutes, or 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. So first one should do kiirtan. Because by doing kiirtan the mind will get elevated. After that, immediately one should sit in sadhana. Then you will see that there will not be any worldly thoughts. Then sadhana will be proper...Do not worry; you have learned sadhana and I am always ready to help and serve you. (English Summary, V24 25(H), 22 Nov 71)

Note: Every sincere Ananda Margii wants to do sadhana. Yet most of the time this aforesaid problem occurs. And our Guru understands this. That is why He has graciously given such a beautiful solution-- as mentioned above. I think many may be following His divine guideline; and for those who are not, they should do so from now onwards, i.e. sing kiirtan before doing sadhana.

Ways to cure food poisoning

The following is an English summary of Baba’s Bangla discourse from Shabda Cayanika:
Antidotes of poison - green turmeric, spinach leaves, basil...mainly black basil and secondly white basil or any kinds of basil.

If some negative effect is going on due to food poisoning or because of eating poisonous fish, then without any delay a sufficient quantity of spinach leaves should be eaten and by that way the poison will be antidoted. (English summmary) (1)

Baba's presence in sadhana + 4 more

Baba
Baba's presence in sadhana

Namaskar,

Some think that when they sit for sadhana then all kinds of stray thoughts flood the mind, but when they are not doing sadhana then those types of thoughts do not occur. But this is not correct. Always those stray thoughts are being generated but when one is not practicing sadhana they do not notice it.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Bad: keeping a diary during sadhana to note stray thoughts

It is just like if you throw trash in a very clean area then immediately you will notice the garbage in that place. But if you go to the garbage dump and toss more trash there, then no one will notice that trash because already there is so much garbage there.

Similarly, when the mind is involved in sadhana it is getting cleansed so stray thoughts are very noticeable. And when the mind is not involved in sadhana, then it is dirty and distracted, so one does not take note of those stray thoughts because already the mind is goaded in so many different ways. Those stray thoughts are just like adding more junk to the heap of garbage.

Some think that keeping a worldly diary by their side during sadhana is a good idea so they can write down those mundane points and stray ideas. But this is a very bad thing to do. In that case, one cannot ever do sadhana, rather they will just be caught up in crude thinking and when sadhana time comes then more and more of those thoughts will fill the mind and one will go on writing them down. This is a very negative and degrading approach. Rather when those thoughts come they should be immediately pushed aside; one should vigorously redirect their mind toward their spiritual practice and cherished Goal.

At the time of sadhana one should not think about other worldly matters, rather one is to focus on their meditation.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Sadguru Baba guide His bhaktas

As Guru, Baba guides His bhaktas onto the right path, irrespective of where they are. Always He is present to benevolently guide them in all kinds of ways. Indeed, there are countless stories recounted by sadhakas how Baba helped them in their time of need and brought them onto the path of dharma. Baba has blessed all His disciples in this way, directly and indirectly. Still He is doing this, and He will continue to guide His bhaktas in this way forever.

Ananda Marga teachings guide us, "While doing anything, while doing any mundane duty or doing any spiritual practice – you should always remember that He is Subject, He is seeing what you are doing. He is hearing what you are thinking. You cannot do anything secretly. He is always with you...you are never alone; He is always with you. You are never helpless, you are never shelterless, you are never weak, you are the strongest personality of the universe, because the Supreme Entity is always with you." (1)

Here the point is that Baba is with His disciples all the 24hrs. He is ever-ready to guide and protect you, and there are innumerable ways in which He might express His presence - now and far, far into the future He will be doing this. It is purely His unfathomable grace.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga teachings guides us, "Now the first phase of the process is physico-psychic – that is, withdrawing the mind from different physical objects and bringing it to a particular point, and directing that point towards the realm of mind. And next is a phase of withdrawing the mind from different mental objects, from different mental pabula, and directing it towards the Supreme Subjectivity. Now this process of movement is the process of concentration." (2)

Conclusion

When doing sadhana don't be sidetracked by all kinds of distraction, rather with doubled efforts redirect the mind towards the spiritual Goal.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "From the psychic sphere also, unnecessary waves are to be removed. This will remove many burdens from the mind. “I must not bother about petty things, because that will waste my time” – people should remember this. This removal or rather withdrawal of unnecessary and undesirable thoughts emanated from the mind will help you in rationalizing the major portion of your mental faculty, so this must also be practised. The cult of spirituality is a cult of pinnacled order." (3)

Namaskar,
In Him,
Ksema Deva

~ In-depth study ~

Guru's book Yoga Psychology teaches us, "Now everywhere, in cent per cent of the cases, there is wastage of human psychic potentiality. The psychic potentialities of human beings are immense, but people do not utilize them because most of their valuable time is wasted in undesirable thoughts, in psychic extravaganza. Suppose human life is an average of sixty years. Twenty years of that is spent in sleep, and the remaining forty years are wasted in petty or useless activities. How much time do people really get to devote to worthwhile tasks?"
"This psychic extravaganza should be checked either by physical approach, or psychic approach, or by spirituo-psychic approach. People should have some control over their breathing, over their respiratory system, because the waves of respiration control the waves of thinking. Whenever you are doing something crude, your respiration becomes very active; and when you are thinking of something subtle, it becomes slow, extremely slow. And finally, when this respiration coincides, or becomes one, with one’s thought-waves, that stage is known as hat́ha yoga samádhi. That is, the physical exertions, the physical emanations, become one with the psychic emanations. So some degree of control over respiration is essential." (4)

When unit ensconced in the Supreme

Ananda Marga ideology explains, "You must have a spiritual goal. You must know what to do, what not to do, how to do, why to do. And for this purpose, the movement is to make the mind pinnacled, apexed, and bring all the propensities to that point, and goad it towards your spiritual goal."
"But a man says, I am an ordinary man, how am I to concentrate the mind? How am I to bring all my propensities to a particular point and goad that pointed mind towards the spiritual goal? It is a natural question...."
"Then what to do? One must remember that one’s unit consciousness is a microscopic fraction of that Parama Puruśa, or that Cosmic Consciousness. I have already said that when one unit thinks that “I am a drop of water,” it is a drop of water. And when it thinks that “I am not a drop of water, I am the ocean,” it is the ocean. Similarly, when the unit ensconces itself in the Supreme Excellence it becomes Supreme, it becomes one with the Lord. And when it becomes one with the Lord no obstacle can defeat him." (5)

Ananda Marga ideology tells us, "When I think I am His object and He is my subject, I cannot commit any wrong under any circumstances. His ever wakeful conscience will constantly warn me, “What are you doing? He is watching you.”" (6)

Baba story: trash in sadhana

I went to Patna to attend to some family matters and while there I faced a lot of clash. When I came back to Jamalpur, I sat for my regular sadhana. But, in place of doing proper sadhana and japa, all the trouble and difficulties of the trip to Patna flooded my mind. I became immersed in those mundane thoughts. I completely forgot that I was supposed to be doing sadhana.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

It was then that I clearly heard Baba's voice. In a scolding tone Baba was saying: "Dashrath...Dashrath...Dashrath...". Baba called my name three times.

Hearing this I was completely surprised. I broke my sadhana and started searching all around to find Baba. I went outside but I did not see Baba. I was thinking, "Where has Baba gone, how has He left so quickly, why is He not here."

I wondered, "When Baba is not here then how did His voice reach me."

I then returned to my seated posture and did my sadhana as usual. I also thought I should go see Baba that evening.

Fieldwalk with Baba

So that evening I made it over to Baba's residence around the time that He would go for regular His fieldwalk. I was standing outside His house with the plan that when He comes out then I will accompany Him on His walk.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In His usual way, Baba came out from the house and began walking. I started following Him, just keeping a few paces behind. I was thinking when I get the opportune moment I will ask Baba about His coming to my house and why did He leave so quickly without waiting for me. I wanted to know if He was angry with me for not doing meditation in the correct way. I wanted to ask Baba why He came to my house and called me and then left so quickly. While walking, I had these thoughts in my mind.

When the right moment arrived, I asked in a very humble manner, "Baba, did You become annoyed with me today when I was not doing sadhana properly - is that why You scolded me?"

Hearing this, Baba smiled and started talking on another matter.

Since that time I became very particular in my sadhana. If worldly thoughts ever entered my mind and intruded upon my spiritual practice, I did not entertain them at all. I just re-focused my mind on my meditation, by His grace.

(Note: Above is a first-hand account from family Acarya Dashrathji of Jamalpur. Some mistakenly think his name is spelled as Dasarath or Dasrath, but those are not correct. The proper spelling is Dashrath, and that is what has been used in the above story.)

His divine arrival

“Se sujan tháke kotháy, tháke kotháy…” (Prabhat Samgiita #4309)

Purport:

Where does that very Charming Entity reside - where does He live? In the anthocephalus indicus flower garden, the peacock goes on telling that it is difficult to understand His liila.

That very Entity smiles like the golden hue of the crimson dawn in the eastern horizon. With great love and affection He is conveying the divine message of spiritual life in every ear - He is telling everybody, without differentiating between caste, creed, colour, or any barriers. He is giving His special teachings to one and all about how to lead a dharmic life.

Age after age, He comes and goes and is known as Taraka Brahma; He takes advent and lives within the reach of human beings, by accepting the bondage of time and space. Even then He remains beyond the limitation of those relative factors always. He comes on this earth by taking human form yet acts beyond time and space eternally and is ever-present with all….

Stooge intellectual extol the elites

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “Powerful people have exploited sáhityikas [writers/ speakers/ artists] in various ways, taking advantage of their indigence. This has been going on since ancient times. In those days even kings and emperors encouraged court poets, giving them gifts of tax-free properties, and in that way bought their head and their hands. Talented sáhityikas or artists frequently had to do uncongenial jobs under circumstantial pressure for the amusement of their patrons. To satisfy the whims of their licentious patrons, they had to compose obscene poems and sculpt obscene statues and images. To make their patrons’ enemies look contemptible, they had to besmirch their names with scandals and calumnies. To extol the dress, colour, family, caste, class and ancestry of their patrons, they had to resort to lies and fraud and cite the revelations of the gods as substantiation. The same condition has continued even today. With very few exceptions, most sáhityikas belong to the lower stratum of society. In spite of their desire to work independently, most of them have pawned themselves, from the grey matter of their brains to the very tips of their fingers, to particular people and organizations. Even those who appear from their writings to be bold and spirited, have, under circumstantial pressure, become the playthings of political parties.” (1)

Note: In His above teaching, Baba is pointing out how throughout history those in powerful positions have exploited and purchased writers, intellectuals, and artisans etc. Due to the pressure of circumstance, those writers and artists had to use their talents to promote the agenda and glories of those in power.

Cancer & sleep cycle

Remaining awake after midnight and sleeping after sunrise comes under the definition of being awake at night and sleeping during the day. And that very condition invites cancer:

Ananda Marga Yogic Treatments says "Persons... [who] sleep during the day and keep late nights are most likely to be attacked by cancer." (1)

Note: Sleeping during the day does not just mean taking a nap in the afternoon or in the late morning. Sleeping during the day also means not getting up in the early morning for paincajanya.

Why dearth of aspirants

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Among so many people in our human society, very few get the opportunity to acquire spiritual knowledge. And among these, a still smaller percentage get the chance to undergo practical training. Why? Because the science is rare, the aspirants are rarer, and the teachers are rarer still.” (1)

Consequences of retrenching people without arranging a alternative job

According to Prout philosophy, "For the all-round welfare of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish."

"First people should not be retrenched from their livelihood unless alternative employment has been arranged for them."

“In India during the time of the British, many small kingdoms were ruled by rajas and maharajas. When India became independent, these kingdoms merged into India, and the Indian government decided to pay the former monarchs a stipend. However, this scheme was not a good idea, because many former monarchs wasted money and lived luxurious, sycophantic lifestyles. After a particular leader became prime minister, the scheme was abandoned at short notice. This caused economic hardship for some of the less well-off recipients who were unable to make alternative financial arrangements. Some old people in particular found it difficult to adjust. While the government should not have adopted the scheme in the first place, having adopted it, the government should have withdrawn it gradually and taken the responsibility for looking after the elderly people on humanitarian grounds.”

“Now you understand the consequences of retrenching people without arranging a suitable alternative livelihood for them.” (1)
