Baba discarded dry intellectuals?

Baba

Baba discarded dry intellectuals?

Namaskar,

Those familiar with Sadguru Baba’s discourses know that Baba is very critical of dry intellectuals. Yet throughout the general society and in the various religions, dry intellectuals are very well-respected. In AMPS, however, Baba always condemns those same dry intellectuals, at every opportunity. What could be the reason for this? That is the question that arises in the mind of many readers. In His following teaching Baba has given the answer.

Do and die to establish oneself

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Where there is knowledge but no devotion, then those people, they try to establish their specialities. And, this endeavor to establish the speciality becomes more important than to find out the truth, than to find out the veracity | सत्य निर्धारण का प्रयास जितना रहता है, उससे अधिक प्रयास रहता है अपनी विशेषता को प्रतिष्ठित करने का | इससे होता क्या ? ये लोग आख़िर तक दुनिया के बोझा बन जाते हैं | जब मरता है, लोग बोलता है,—"ठीक है, आफ़त गया |" (1) (EGD 21 August 1978 Patna)

Here is a summary of Baba’s above Hindi teaching:

Intellectuals have far more interest in establishing their own glory and speciality than discovering the real veracity of a given topic. Because of this, in the end, they become a burden to society. And when they die, people think, “It is good that this devil is gone.”

In explaining the above shloka in that discourse, Baba says that there is not one single muni (intellectual) whose opinion does not differ from another muni’s opinion on any given point. Every intellectual has their own opinion. And always they will try to prove their idea as the best and greatest. Along the way, they will belittle others. And here is the degraded mindset of dry intellectuals. They do not have an iota of desire to find out the truth of any given issue. Their only goal is to show that they are special creatures and their ideas are tops.

Dry intellectuals cause mass destruction

To do that, they distort the facts, cover up their sins, and try to prove wrong as right and right as wrong. With their wits they harm millions and misguide others; they cause wars and mass destruction. This is their defect. If any person has acquired a lot of knowledge and does not have bhakti and service mindedness, they are a dry intellectual. And they will prove to be disastrous. To project their greatness, they will harm society whenever they get the opportunity.

The pages of history are littered by the works of dry intellectuals, who with their misguided intellect, brought so much destruction, war, tragedy, and catastrophe etc. There is no end to their deadly grotesque deeds. And the root cause is that dry knowledge, devoid of bhakti, gives way to an enormous ego. Goaded by that ego, they want to prove their supremacy over anything and everything.

Bhakti & study: highly needed

Verily, in the general society, dry and disastrous intellectuals are everywhere. And sadly our AMPS is also not immune. At the same time, acquiring knowledge of Ananda Marga philosophy is highly needed:
  • If you do not study Sadguru Baba’s teachings, then cunning intellectuals will misguide you. Due to your naivete and simple-mindedness, you may commit sin. So the study of Baba’s scripture is very important.
  • Those who do not study unknowingly preach dogma when doing pracara.
  • Those who do not study follow the wrong things and fall into the ditch. Yet, at the same time, bhakti & service-mindedness should also be cultivated. Otherwise that study will be poisonous and lead to an inflated ego. One will begin to think, “I know things that most others mostly do not know. These other people are dumb and do not know anything.”
  • So every sincere sadhaka should regularly study and do introspection and self-analysis as well.
  • One should be vigilant to ensure that feelings of superiority are not brooding within. If such egoistic feelings do arise, the way to counteract is to think, “Whatever qualities and knowledge I have, everything is coming directly from Parama Purusa. He is the owner.” This will check the ego and help one to realise that only Parama Purusa is great.

Ego is ignorance

By themselves, human beings are quite weak and frail. For instance, if even an olympic champion body-builder does not eat for a few days he will not be able to speak; all his energy will vanish. So one should always think, “Whatever energy I have is constantly being supplied by Parama Purusa via physical, psychic, and spiritual food. So it is His energy. He is the main Doer and the force behind my every deed.” Remembering this, the ego can be squashed.

Conclusion

Here are the three main concluding ideas:
(a) Study of Ananda Marga scripture is very important.
(b) Due to knowledge ego comes and brings one’s downfall.
(c) Be alert to eliminate the ego with the help of bhakti and service-mindedness.

Those who do this are really an asset to the society at-large.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Sukranti

Two very good stories

Here are two stories which lead in the direction that one should not demean anyone or feel themselves to be better than others:

(a) Once there was a blind farmer and some were mocking and ridiculing him thinking how could the farmer do the job properly when he was blind. Yet, just by touching the soil that blind farmer knew what crop was best suited for that land. So even though he had become blind, he was a true master in the field of farming and agricultural science.

(b) Once there was a pundit who called upon a boatman to take him across the river. Along the way, the pundit began asking the boatman, “Have you read the vedas? Do you know the upanishads? Have you studied the Gita?” To all those questions the boatman shook his head no. Astonished, the pundit said, “You do not even know one single shloka from these great texts?” The boatman replied, “Sir, I am just a boatman and all day long I go back and forth across this river.” Hearing this, the pundit looked at him and said, “You are 25 years old? Of your expected lifespan you have now wasted half of your life.” Having said this the pundit was gloating in his own glory. After a few minutes, the boatman noticed that there was a hole in the boat, and the boat was taking on water. So the boatman looked at the pundit and said, “Sir, do you know how to swim?” The pundit replied, “No.” Then the boatman said, “Well, I am very sorry to say that our boat is sinking and soon you will have wasted your entire life, as you will drown in the river’s current.”

The takeaway of both the above stories is, those whom you are thinking to be stupid are actually not stupid; rather, they are masters in their own fields. Just as you are a master in your area of expertise, they are a master in theirs. They may not know your field, and you may not know theirs. So one should not harbour a superiority complex and feel that one is great and others are fools. According to Ananda Marga scripture, those who are fools feel egotistical about their own knowledge, and go on belittling others.

Dry intellectuals in AMPS

You will find many dry intellectuals who want to change Sadguru Baba’s teachings and invent new definitions and theories. They want to assert their own greatness or the superiority of their clan by their false, exaggerated, intellectual extravaganza. By this way they have imposed dogmas on our AMPS. There are so many in our AMPS but here are a few of their names - click here. So watch out.

Let me remain with You forever

"Bhúlo ná prabhú, e tava kańáre bhúlo ná..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3161)

Purport:

O’ Prabhu, I beg You not to forget this tiny particle of Yours. I am that small atom and ask You to keep me under Your wings. I have come from You and am always within You. Please do not ignore or toss me away outside, rather shower Your grace and grant me the highest bhakti.

O’ my Parama Purusa, since the early dawn of this creation, from the very beginning of saincara, You have invariably been with me in the flow of Your thought waves. Never have I been apart from You. Unfailingly, You have remained very close to me. In both good and bad times of my life, You are always there to save me. In this sweet, fragrant, spring breeze, Your heart is very near to mine. You love me. My Adored One, please do not go away or push me far. Let me remain with You forever.

O’ Parama Purusa Baba, normally every living being, each jiiva, has both positive and negative qualities, with a mix of various merits and demerits - virtue and vice. But my case is different. I have very little virtue and a huge amount of vice. My bad qualities are so numerous that they completely outnumber and overshadow a few good qualities. Parama Purusa, I fell into the dungeon of deep, cimmerian darkness and am crying in my pain and suffering. Now, please do not act unkindly by leaving me in misery and sorrow. Be gracious and keep me under Your shelter and care.

O’ Baba, please do not ever forget me. I have come from You. I am Yours and You are mine. Kindly keep me under your wings....

Notes for Prabhat Samgiita #3161:

Ananda Marga ideology states, “The poet Vidyapati also said, “Adi anándika nátha kaháyasi ab tárańa bhárańa tumhárá.” “You are the Lord of the beginning and the Lord of the end also. I am somewhere between the beginning and the end, and so You are also my Lord. Thus it is Your duty to save me, to redeem me, to protect me from danger. You are bound to do that.”” (1)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Paramátmá is the Soul of all souls in the Universe. They receive energy from Paramátmá. The ownership of anything is not yours; it is His. Everything comes from Him and ultimately goes to Him. You cannot create any original object; objects come from Him.” (2)

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Oh Parama Brahma, I am not outside your universe. I surrender to you, ‘Lead me along the path of righteousness, lead me according to your will.’” (3)
