Kiirtana: ideal tool for pracara + 2 more

Kiirtana: ideal tool for pracara

Namaskar,

Margii J approached various margiis to lead the kiirtan and in this way the time slots were taken - but still more people were needed. Margii J then asked one non-margii student - whom we shall call "Ram" - who was from that area and now lives in the nearby town.

Ram had some musical ability and would regularly attend and participate in non-margii kiirtan gatherings during purnima (i.e. the full moon) and other occasions. So he was quite familiar with traditional Hindu kiirtan. When Ram was asked by margii J to lead parts of the upcoming Ananda Marga akhanda kiirtan program, he replied, "Why would you want me to do this, I am not an Ananda Margii. I have never sung the Baba nam kevalam kiirtan." They talked for a little while and ultimately Ram consented and agreed to lead a 2-hour time slot in the upcoming kiirtan program.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

When the day of the gathering arrived and his turn came to lead the kiirtan, Ram along with his musician friends began to play. They were supposed to sing for 2 hours. But Ram liked it so much that he continued leading the kiirtan for 6 - 7 hours, and he never became tired etc. In fact, as time went by he became more and more energised by the kiirtan mantra and felt so much bliss. Ram's mind became completely transformed, and he fell in love with the Baba nam kevalam kiirtan.

After the program Ram continued to sing kiirtan whenever he could, and soon he took initiation and started doing sadhana regularly as well. Ram became an established sadhaka. So this is the story of how kiirtan is an excellent tool for Ananda Marga pracara and creating new margiis.

Here are some reflections from the above story.

How to make new margiis without acaryas

Acaryas and tattvikas are not always available immediately in every locale. So if someone wants to learn about mental peace, yoga, meditation, or the yogic lifestyle and you are not finding an acarya or tattvika etc, then in that case every sincere margii should introduce that interested person to our AM kiirtana. After half-bath, both should sit or dance together and sing kiirtana. By this way, any margii can create new sadhakas. And, in the future, when the opportunity arises those interested will get initiated into Ananda Marga tantra meditation.

In those older days when kiirtana was new then if any kiirtana program was organised in a village etc then leaflets or invitations were sent to thousands of non-margiis to come and participate. By this way so many margiis were created and this above story itself is one example. Nowadays, due to various excuses and justifications, this tradition has almost disappeared.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

When Mahasambhuti comes, He comes for all - not only for the entire human society, but animals, plants, i.e. everyone. For non-margiis, He has given kiirtana. Those non-margiis who are not even initiated can do kiirtana and attain perfection. Although they do know that Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is their Guru, He will accept and bless them. So this is one way how, without the help of any acarya, one can reach the final fulfilment of human life.

For all these reasons it is our moral duty to invite non-margiis to sing kiirtan in all opportunities. Whenever kiirtan is done then Baba’s photo is not needed. Dancing around Baba’s photo is a dogma that started after 1990. Earlier, when dancing kiirtan there was just the pratika. The photo is for bhaktas only.

Another way to bring non-margiis is to have them join dharmacakra by sitting in the back and following whatever they can without creating any nuisance. Overall, kiirtan is the best way to bring non-margiis into Ananda Marga.

More takeaways from the above story

1. Guru's guideline is to invite non-margiis for kiirtan. The main reason is that the Baba Nam Kevalam kiirtan is a siddha mantra. It is spiritually charged by Mahasambhuti. So anyone who sings it or hears it will be benefited.

2. People enter into Ananda Marga in various ways. Some are attracted by service, others by philosophy, some by sadhana, and others by kiirtan. So it is very important to invite non-margiis to come and sing kiirtan.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

3. When anyone achieves perfection in kiirtan - i.e. kiirtan siddhi - then the sound of kiirtan always resounds. Even when there is no physical sound per se, but their mind is suffused by the sweet sound of kiirtan.

All benefited by kiirtan - whether they like it or not

Ananda Marga ideology states, "At the place of kiirtana, not only the people who are themselves doing kiirtana will be benefited, but also those who are not participating – and even those who are not participating and who do not even like it – they will also be benefited! Those who listen sincerely to the chanting of kiirtana will be benefited and those who do not listen sincerely but simply hear inadvertently without any respect, they too will be benefited. “shraddhayá helayá vá” – “either with veneration or without”." Namaskar
at His lotus feet,
Sagar

During the 1970's, Shrii Jaiprakashjii (i.e. margii J), of Chapari bhukti - Etah district (Uttar Pradesh), was organising an extended akhanda kiirtan program and he needed volunteers to lead the kiirtan during different time periods.

~ In-depth study ~

If only one minute time, do kiirtan

Baba says, "If you have even only one minute’s time, do kiirtana for one minute. If even two or three people gather together, they can do kiirtana collectively; if one thousand people assemble together, then also they can do kiirtana. When you do kiirtana and move towards Parama Puruśa, the Supreme Father, then in Parama Puruśa’s mind also there will be a flow of bliss, because so many minds are coming towards Him with love. He will feel very happy. Seeing the bliss of His devotees, Parama Puruśa will also become overwhelmed with joy, because of His enormous love for His devotees. “How good these devotees are!” – He says. Parama Puruśa loves each and everyone, but He loves those who do kiirtana still more. He will say to them, “Come, come, come – come near to Me.” This is the proper way to serve Parama Puruśa in the mental sphere." (2)

Those who do kiirtan become purified

Ananda Marga ideology states, "If people do kiirtana with distinct expression of the mantra, their mouths become pure, their tongues become pure, their ears become pure, their whole bodies become pure - and when so many parts of the body become pure, the átmá (self) also becomes pure. By kiirtana you become as pure as if you have taken a “holy dip in the Ganges.” What does a holy dip in the Ganges mean for a sádhaka? It means doing kiirtana constantly." (3)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "I have already said, and I repeat it again, that now the time has come to manifest the glory of kiirtana. And I also want to say further that those who wish to attain spiritual progress in their sadhana will have to do more and more kiirtana. By kiirtana, the mind becomes pure, and with this pure mind, one can do sadhana." (4)

Baba says, "Instead of wasting your time in gossiping, in useless idle pursuits, you should do kiirtana even for two minutes or five minutes, whenever you get the opportunity. It is foolish to waste one’s valuable time in gossiping." (5)

Kiirtana very helpful for sadhana

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "If the mind is made pure even for five minutes by kiirtana, then if you do sadhana for only five minutes, your sadhana will be very good - you will surely attain spiritual progress." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Kiirtana [is] the most essential aid for sadhana." (7)

When singing kiirtana

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Suppose, while doing kiirtana, one lady asks another, “Well sister, what did you cook today?” This will also be heard by the practitioners of kiirtana. To prevent these undesirable sounds from being heard, it is advisable to play some instrument during kiirtana. A mrdauṋga [a kind of drum] or some similar instrument should be used, but one should not play any heavy-sounding instrument like a d́hák [a large drum played with sticks], a d́hol [a loud drum] or a gong. The mind prefers to hear a sweet sound, like that of the mrdauṋga, than a harsh sound. Some time ago I mentioned that Bhola Mayra said that when the cookawing of crows and the beating of drums stop, human ears get some relief. People do not like to hear such harsh, unpleasant sounds. The sound of the mrdauṋga may not be perfect, but it has one quality: it is very sweet. Thus, whenever a distracted mind hears the sweet music of a mrdauṋga, it returns to the proper place. A remarkable science lies in kiirtana." (8)

One's whole existence becomes involved

Ananda Marga ideology states, "What do you gain by doing kiirtana? Several sense organs become engaged. The tongue is occupied. So during that time you won’t have thoughts like, “I will eat this, eat that;” no kind of greed will remain. The sense of taste and taste buds are obstructed. The ears are busy hearing the kiirtana, so they have no scope to go elsewhere. The mind is always thinking of that, so it also has no scope to go elsewhere. And if kiirtana is combined with dance then one’s attention is directed to the rhythm of the dance. As a result of the dance, hormones are secreted from the glands. So under no circumstances can the mind degenerate. There is no way for it to go down. This is the way of the wise." (9)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "When kiirtana was first invented, the psycho-philosophy behind it was this: at the time of kiirtana, the vocal cord sings, the ears hear, and the hands and feet dance, and thus all the organs are kept preoccupied with the divine. They are not allowed to move wherever they want but are kept engaged. There is a popular Indian superstition that when ghosts are not kept busy they break the necks of their prey. Similarly, if the sensory and motor organs are not kept engaged in the attainment of the divine, they may lead one astray. Kiirtana is therefore most beneficial as it keeps all the organs fully engaged in a spiritual pursuit. However, while doing kiirtan, if one listens to anything else, the mind will be diverted." (10)

Chant kiirtana aloud

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Kiirtaniiyah sadáharih - one should always sing the glory of the Lord. It is the frailty of human beings that when a few of them group together, they indulge in criticizing or mudslinging others. This leads to psychic degradation. In fact people should perform such actions which will lead to psychic elevation, actions which give the mind no scope for degeneration. The easiest way to do this is to sing the glories of the Supreme Entity whose very thought automatically elevates the mind. Chanting the name of Parama Puruśa aloud is called kiirtana; for, the vibration created in the atmosphere by kiirtana will influence others also. But if one’s mental ideation is conveyed only to Parama Puruśa without affecting other human beings, this is called bhajana. So bhajana is purely personal; it has no collective aspect. Kiirtana is more beneficial than bhajana, and hence it is said kiirtaniiyah sadá harih: whenever you find time, do kiirtana loudly and you will never become degenerated because by chanting the Lord’s holy name the mind remains elevated. Mudslinging and criticizing is thereby stopped forever, and hence kiirtana averts the degradation of the human mind. You should always remember that in every sphere of life – social, political, economic, psychic, and spiritual – you should always follow the principle of “taking the opposite stance”: there is no exception to this rule. Victory will surely be yours." (11)

Kiirtana solves all problems

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now, whatever might be the physical miseries – be they natural or man-made – if people collectively chant kiirtana, the calamities are dispelled then and there. In the case of natural calamities like flood, famine, drought or epidemic, or man-made calamities, miseries and tortures – if kiirtana is chanted with maximum sincerity, it will bring direct relief in no time." (12)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Kiirtana is not only helpful in the realm of spirituality, but also in all spheres of life; it banishes physical troubles and tribulations as well. Kiirtana fights against all mundane difficulties and finally one becomes victorious." (13)

Present in all lokas

"Tomáte ámáte kabe kár paricaya, ár keu jáne ná, tumi jáno…” (Prabhat Samgiita #2632)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, this sweet relation of ours is eternal. For ages and ages we have been together. How long has this intimate link between You and I been going on, nobody knows; only You know. In the very beginning You were all alone - there was no one for You to love, and nobody to love You. So You created this expansive liila. The jiivas sing and chant Your glory. This intense closeness between unit and Cosmic becomes known to all. You also know and accept this very fact and shower Your grace and love on the bhaktas.

There is such a loving feeling and affectionate tenderness between the bhakta and their Lord. At any cost, the jiivatma cannot remain without the Cosmic Entity. And in absence of the unit, the Cosmic Entity cannot exist either. The sweetness and beauty is due to both - the sadhaka and the Supreme One. They are loving each other. O’ Parama Purusa, why then are You remaining distant and far away from me and not allowing me to come near? You know that both the individual and Supreme merge together to become one, then why do You not accept this very truth.

O’ Parama Purusa, Baba, each and every moment with rhythmic expression You are present in all the lokas as well as beyond the lokas and in the astral world. You are everywhere, hiding in my mind playing Your divine liila. Then why do You not hear my mental thoughts and feelings - the tale of my heart - alas, You do not pay any attention.

Baba, please give me shelter at Your lotus feet...

Note: The above Prabhat Samgiita reveals how Parama Purusa created this grand universe to have the company of His bhaktas. The song further expresses how the bhakta cannot live without Parama Purusa and that Parama Purusa cannot exist without His bhaktas. So both are mutually dependent upon each other; and, in their own way, both are thinking that the other is something very great - superior. This is part and parcel of the wonderful message of the above Prabhat Samgiita. And this same unique idea is beautifully explained in this below excerpt:

Ananda Marga ideology says, "When there were no devotees, God had no name -- He was nameless. When there came to be devotees, then God became named God. I was saying in Delhi that the fight between God and devotees is an old fight, a sweet fight. And what is that fight? God says to devotees, 'It is you who are superior. Because of you, I have been named. Had it not been for you, who would have called me by the name of God? Even if I was God, I was not 'God'. Because of you, I have become God.' And devotees say, 'You are the base of my life. In Your absence, the existence of my life becomes jeopardized. You have created, and You alone are the base.' Devotees consider God to be superior, and vice versa. This fight to make the other superior has no end." (1)

Current affairs: Prout solution

Prout philosophy states, "Now, suppose a man seems to have good relations with his neighbours, but it becomes apparent that he is about to murder his wife, what should be the duty of the neighbours? Will they remain tight-lipped, sit quietly with their arms folded, and dismiss the situation as purely a domestic affair, thereby making the murder of the woman easier, and thus assist in establishing static peace? No, that is not the dictum of human dharma. On the contrary they should rush to the house, break down the door, save the woman, take suitable action against the male tyrant, and in this way come forward to establish sentient peace. Likewise, if any country perpetrates atrocities on its minorities or attacks a weak neighbouring country, then the other neighbouring countries should, if necessary, resist the oppressor with the force of arms, and thereby come forward to establish sentient peace." (1)

Note: In His above teaching, Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, the Propounder of Prout philosophy, guides us that we must not sit idle and passively watch oppressive nations siege, attack, and destroy other countries. Remaining on the sidelines as Russian forces bully and bomb Ukraine is not in accordance with Prout philosophy. The only way to establish sentient peace is to step up to the aggressors and defend and save those under attack. So the key point is that intervention is needed.

Interwoven nature of society + 4 more

    Baba
    Interwoven nature of society

    Namaskar,

There are some in society who possess a very low-grade way of thinking. For example, those without children complain that they shouldn’t have to pay taxes which will go towards free, public education for the kids in their neighborhood. Their thinking is that why should they pay for the education of someone else’s kids when they don’t have children themselves. So their mentality is that they should not have to pay any taxes towards free education.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

India: Example of no police on trains

Prior to the 1980s there were no police seen on trains in India. Each train would carry about 3,000 - 4,000 people without a single police officer on board. People had faith that if any adverse situation arose their fellow passengers would help them, and there was no need for the police. Similarly, in many areas of India, back then one would not find police for hundreds of miles because there was no need for it. Post-1980 when materialism and unemployment increased, (college/university) students were involved in theft and violence in the streets and communities, andalso on trains. If we look at today, the presence of police is often to ensure the safety of all on trains and to prevent the occurrence of any theft or violence.

    People in US jails

The population of the U.S is about 320 million out of which 1.2 million are in jail. The public cost for one person in jail is about US $100,000 per year for food, clothing, medicine, courts, lawyers, security etc. Who pays for these expenses? The government provides funds for residents who are in jail by taking money collected from taxpayers. So, indirectly, everyone pays the expenses for those in jail. And why are people in jail? Because of their criminal activities. Why did they perform such activities? Due to of the lack of a proper education system and their level of thinking was not high but rather low. Because of the lack of a proper education system, a large gap exists between the educated versus the uneducated. In the U.S, there is so much insecurity among people that no one knows when one will be in the midst of severe gun violence-- be the person rich or poor. Even though one is rich, s/he is under so much uncertainty because there are people on the streets who are not educated and present a threat to them. Education, along with the misallocation of financial and existential resources, is the root of all such insecurities in society, and everyone faces the consequences of societal disturbances.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Society analogous to human body

Ananda Marga considers the society as a body. If the mind thinks that it is the chief part of the body and does not take care of the other parts like the feet, then if any disease occurs in the feet such as cancer, the entire body will be affected. So all the parts of the body will have to be taken care of to maintain good health. The society consists of human beings, animals, plants, and other animate / inanimate beings, and all have to be taken care of to build a healthy society. As we are human beings and possess the highest level of intellect compared to any other beings, we have the responsibility to take care of one and all. Just like when a baby is born into a family, that baby does not know where s/he is located, who are its parents, what is her/his name etc, but the parents / elders who are at home ensure that the baby’s needs are fulfilled. Similarly, we as human beings have to take care of the entire society.

Responsibility to take care of animals & plants

A cat does not understand whether she is a cat because of lesser awareness in animals. Plants do not understand that they even exist. People who are aware feel that there is a need for everybody’s existence including smaller creatures such as insects, birds, flies, etc. For example, we need bees to exist because they are responsible for pollination which further generates seeds, and fosters the cycle of existence of plants from one season to another. Similarly, plants are so important as they provide us with food, oxygen, rain etc. If human beings think of their own advantage and not for the society, then the society will not exist. If human beings will not take care of plants/trees, then we will not get oxygen, there will not be any rain, etc. Everyone is dependent on each other, like plants produce oxygen which is consumed by human beings, and human beings generate carbon dioxide, which in turn is needed by the plants. The relationship of everyone’s existence is interwoven. So as human beings we have to be aware of the fact that we have a bigger responsibility to take care of every being in society.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Selfish people pay price

Every living being is interdependent. That is how the universe is created.  But because of self-interest one pays the price, if not directly then indirectly. Certainly, every selfish person pays the price. For instance, because of self-interest, people are hesitant to pay taxes for education, then every child will not get the opportunity to become educated. Due to a lack of education, one may drift into a life of crime, or try to earn money by illegal means. Then they will be jailed for their illegal activities, which in turn requires more police officers to maintain security, or more administrative people in courts, jails etc. The number of jails needed will be higher. Who will pay for these? People who have money. So if rich people do not pay taxes for children’s education then they pay their share in other forms. If the cost of education is about $100,000 per student, and that amount is not paid by society, then the child becomes a criminal in the later stage of life because of lack of education, and put in jail. Once in jail, the expenditure is about $100,000 per year until the person reaches about 100 years of age, i.e. until he dies. So the cost of keeping a criminal for a number of years is much much more than paying for the education of a child. Had the child received free education, then he would not have become a criminal. So if one is selfish by not paying directly, then certainly one pays indirectly. Selfishness is a disease according to the point of view in Ananda Marga.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Conclusion

AM philosophy says that the whole world is one society. Everyone is my own.  With this type of feeling, love for each other will increase in a society. A lot of problems which exist today in the world or the new ones arising every day can be prevented by developing togetherness and removing self-interest by thinking the whole world is one society, and everyone is my own.

    In Him,
    Nirakara

Collective movement aims at mental expansion

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "What is society like? It is like a group of people going on a pilgrimage. Try to imagine the scene! Suppose one of the pilgrims is struck down by cholera. Will the rest of them continue on their way, leaving the sick man behind? No, that would be inconceivable for them. Rather, they will break their journey for a day or two, and cure him of his disease. If he is still too weak to walk they will carry him on their shoulders. If some people run short of food, others share what they have with them. Together they share their possessions, and together they march ahead, singing in unison. In their eagerness to move ahead with others they forget their trifling differences...The essence of cooperation resulting from this collective movement aims at expanding a person’s mind by striking down the barriers of meanness [and selfishness]. I repeat that a true society is like such a group of pilgrims who attain a deep psychic affinity while travelling together which helps them solve all the problems in their individual and social lives." Calling You again & again

"Ga'n geye ja'bo, shono na' shono tav iccha'..." (Prabhat Samgiita #2305)

    Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, I will go on singing Your song and chanting Your glory. As per Your wish, You may listen to my songs, or not. But, with these tunes in the depths of my deep ideation, I will generate spiritual waves, by Your blessing, and go on serving You.

O’ Parama Purusa, by avoiding me, maybe You are thinking that I will not sing Your glory anymore and remain quiet. Or perhaps You are considering that out of frustration I will give up all hope of getting You, and I will leave my sadhana, japa, and kiirtana. Or that I will no longer engage in the supreme flow of those divine compositions and melodies, which is inundating the vast sky. And I will not utilize these melodious treasures in my practical life to get closer to You. Baba, with my deep yearning, I am calling You again and again. But I am not getting Your response. Even then I will go on repeating my japa whether You pay heed or not.

O’ my Parama Purusa Baba, with the skill of knowledge, wisdom, intellect, and worldly attributions, Your profundity cannot be measured. Nobody can realise You by their own merit. In repeating Your name and surrendering that very unit "I" which You have bestowed me, I will surely get You by Your blessing.

    Note for Prabhat Samgiita

In the above song, the sadhaka has deep love and a strong yearning for Parama Purusa. So when Parama Purusa does not respond to his call in the way that he desires, the sadhaka makes one loving accusation towards Parama Purusa.

    Islam: women torture

    Namaskar,

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “The social and religious rights of women were curtailed in numerous ways so that they would be kept forever in thrall to the men. They were even forbidden walking in the open space under the open sky. Covered in burkas and veils, they were reduced to the status of caged birds living on seeds and water. It was decreed that they were not entitled to their ancestral property. The girls were given much less than the boys. It was categorically declared that they were not entitled to mukti or mokśa; that women go to heaven, it’s true, but the men get all sorts of privileges there that women cannot get. These rubbish ideas have died out due to various circumstances. In some places they are in the process of extinction, and in other places they are totally extinct.” (1)

Caged birds living on seeds and water

The below scene is a gathering of females and they are not allowed to breathe fresh air. Seeing this inhumane condition, Sadguru Baba is graphically opposing this dogma. Please pay attention to the chain which they are holding in their right hand. Because their face is fully covered, they can’t see very clearly what is around them. So going from point A to point B, they may lose the path and go astray. To avoid this catastrophe, this system is there. So, when they are going from point A to point B, and if on the way there may be a crowd, then one male member leads the group, and the females all follow behind holding onto the rope. You might have seen, in rural areas when farmers want to take a group of cattle from point A to point B, they chain all those animals, like this. Especially they do this when there are crops on both sides of the road. In that way this below scene is very inhuman and ghastly. In Islam, females are treated like animals. And this is the proof. Baba opposes such types of cruelty. And these types of torture of women, are a blot on human society.

The following photo description appears above the photo as well; if you have already read it you may skip this para.

The above scene is a gathering of females and they are not allowed to breathe fresh air. Seeing this inhuman condition, Sadguru Baba is graphically opposing this dogma. Please pay attention to the chain which they are holding in their right hand. Because their face is fully covered, they can’t see very clearly what is around them. How the burka came in India

Ananda Marga Ideology states, “There was a time in India when the ruling class would kidnap women. The burka was introduced throughout northern India, where this particular ruling class had undisputed authority, so that those wicked men could not see the women’s faces.”
“At that time dogma pervaded not just a few, but all aspects of life. Dogma in the psychic realm thwarts human progress. Dogma has long been rampant in our society, and wherever there is dogma, there cannot be proper conduct, or the development of rational intellect, or the thought of genuine sacrifice.” (2)

This above teaching is related with Muslim rulers, those who invaded the country from the Middle East, and occupied a large section of India. In the above teaching, Baba is indirectly talking about those Muslim rulers. They were forcibly abducting girls, so non-Muslim people also started using veils, to save themselves from barbaric attack and kidnapping by their own Islamic kings.

In His above teaching, Baba is talking about scenes like the one portrayed in the above photo. Many may not understand what is meant by a veil. But here you can see what a veil really is. The entire head is covered - as is the rest of their body - and if you look carefully you will notice a small screen in front of the eyes. This allows them to see in a very contrived and limited manner. The field of vision is just barely enough to walk and move around. But nobody can see from the outside in.

This is extremely suffocating - the flow of air is stifled making it even difficult to breathe. That is why it is non-hygienic as one is breathing the same air, even when outdoors.

The worst thing is that this rule of wearing a veil is mostly imposed in the Middle East amidst searing temperatures in the hot desert sun. Plus it is used in parts of Africa, and throughout northern India where in the past Islamic rule was enforced by the sword. These are hot climate areas and that makes it more terrible. To cover the body from head to toe in such extreme heat is nothing but hell in the name of religion.

Those wearing such veils were indoctrinated into this lifestyle since their birth. So they become habituated with it and some do not even want to leave this dogma.

    About Islamic cruelty

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Humanity, in its all-out quest for this aesthetic science, attained spirituality. One must acknowledge this. Herein lies the excellence of aesthetic science. For this reason, I have given my whole-hearted and explicit support for nandana vijiṋána. You know that there are certain religions which do not encourage aesthetic pursuits. You will notice that in those religions inertia, inferiority complexes and a sense of violence are predominant.” (3)

    Emulating old outdated traditions

Note: In His following teaching, Baba guides us that pseudo-spirituality severely hampers one's progress on the path of true spirituality. Unfortunately, we see some instances of this taking shape in our AMPS.

For instance, a few Ananda Margiis born into Hindu families copy their ancestors on the point of annual shraddha ceremonies. Confused sadhakas feel that as their forefathers did like this so they should carry on the tradition. Thus each year confused sadhakas organise programs and mass feedings in the name and honour of their deceased relatives. But this goes wholly against Guru's mandate and guideline. Tragically, their mind has been stifled; these confused sadhakas cannot see this matter in a dharmic way. Just some are stuck on their old, dogmatic family tradition of observing annual shraddha ceremonies.

Same is the case for those who follow so-called mahaprayan. Some confused sadhakas think that, "In the past my ancestors honoured their gurus and teachers by making a yearly shraddha ceremony so I should do this too.” In their confused state the thought arises, “Now my Guru is gone so I should organise an annual death day / tomb worship / shraddhainjali commemoration." In that way some emulated the dogmatic religious worship carried out by their forefathers and re-created that in our AMPS. That is the tragedy which has occurred. As this runs wholly contrary to our Ananda Marga teachings.

Here again, the ill effects of pseudo-spirituality from old traditions have caused the mind to freeze and overlook all logic and reasoning. In Ananda Marga, Parama Purusa is the Guru, and He is eternal. Then where is there scope for so-called mahaprayan. There isn't; it is utterly baseless.

But when the mind is blocked by pseudo-spirituality one cannot think freely on such matters. Hence some become prone to dogma. Sadly, some confused sadhakas think they are getting benefited by such annual shraddha ceremonies and so-called mahaprayan programs, when in fact such confused sadhakas are ruining their own spiritual progress.

According to Baba, the real homage to our ancestors is to fix their flaws so society can progress in the physical, psychic, and spiritual realms.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Pseudo-spirituality cannot help us in our free thinking either, for our thinking is badly affected by dogma. When a human being sits alone and thinks, if the person thinks for the collective interest, then such thoughts are proper; but usually people do not think in this way. Usually they lament over the worn-out skeletons of the past. “This was done by, this was imposed by, our forefathers – when our forefathers have said this, why should I break with the old traditions? It was written in this way in the scriptures; and moreover if I follow these old conventions and traditions, what is the harm?” These types of dogmatic and dogma-ic thoughts will naturally stifle the free flow of human thought. And that is why whenever there is dogma, human thinking cannot be free; and for want of, for paucity of, free thinking, there cannot be any proper psycho-spiritual progress either. So here what we want is perfect spirituality and not pseudo-spirituality. Pseudo-spirituality cannot promote the cause of human welfare; the seed of welfare does not lie there. The seed of welfare cannot exist where the seed of dogma exists." (1)

    Yoga postures for back care

The following is an English summary of Baba’s original teaching given in Bangla in Shabda Cayanika part 8:

When calcium builds up and gets deposited in the back it becomes hard. That is why when people are very young then their spine / backbone is quite flexible, but due to an accumulation of calcium over just a few years by the time they are teen-agers already their spinal column has become stiff and rigid.

Doing noakasana, utkata paschimottanasana, and shalabasana etc eliminates the possibility of developing a hunched back. So those doing hard manual labor that demands bending the back for extended periods of time should do these aforementioned asanas on a regular basis. That will prevent them from suffering from hunch-back in the future. (English summary)
