External vs internal assimilation

Baba

External vs internal assimilation

Namaskar,

In the Saḿskrta language there are two important root verbs: jiṋá and pan'd', both of which have independent and distinct meanings. The root jiṋá refers to external or worldly knowledge, while pan'd' means self-knowledge or spiritual knowledge.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Accordingly, the term jiṋána comes from the root jiṋá; and pan'd'ita is derived from the root pan'd'.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Pan'd'a' means "self-realization". Pan'd'a means "subjective reality". Pan'd'a means "knowing the hub of this Cosmological order". And he who has acquired pan'd'a is a pan'd'ita. Just by learning Saḿskrta one cannot become a pan'd'ita. If one aspires to become a pan'd'ita, one will have to know oneself."

Aham' Brahma'smiiti buddhih ta'mitah pra'ptah pan'd'itah

"'I am that characteristic seity' - this supreme realization is called pan'd'a'. And he who has realized this pan'd'a', he who has acquired this pan'd'a', is a pan'd'ita. You are all sa'dhakas. I will ask you to obey this order of the rs'i, which I also prescribe, and become pan'd'itas."

"Shubhamastu." (1)

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Those who long to acquire pan'd'a are pa'n'd'u." (2)

Explanation of jiṋá

In the Saḿskrta language there are two important root verbs: jiṋá and pan'd'. The root verb jiṋá refers to the assimilation of external knowledge. So jiṋá means subjectivization of external objectivity.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

That is to say, in jiṋána there are three components: the person or knower, the object or known, and the process of becoming known or activating faculty. This three-part system is Baba's clear-cut teaching. So the verb jiṋá refers to the learning and understanding of something worldly-- such as learning about chemistry, mathematics, history, grammar, etc. Hence, jiṋá means accumulating knowledge about all such external topics.

Explanation of pan’d’

In contrast, pan'd' means to know oneself - inner knowledge, self-knowledge, self-realisation, or spiritual knowledge. When one advances on the path of sadhana and moves towards the Cosmic Nucleus and gains internal knowledge then that is pan'd'.

Thus in pan'd', no external component is needed: everything lies within. While with jiṋá the presence of something external is a must. This is the explicit distinction between the root verbs: jiṋá and pan'd'.

So when the root verb jiṋá refers to the assimilation of external knowledge and when the root verb pan'd' means the cultivation of internal knowledge, similarly the noun jiṋánii refers to the one who has accumulated a lot of worldly knowledge and the noun pan'd'ita means the one who has gained self-knowledge and has become realised. In a separate instance, those who wish to acquire pan'd'a are pa'n'd'u. All these clear-cut distinctions Baba makes.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Wrong use in AM books

In many of our Ananda Marga books the translators however have used the term jiṋá, and in some cases atma-jinana, to refer to self-knowledge, but that is incorrect. Rather in the above teaching Baba has clarified that the term pan'd' should be used.

Another common misconception in our Marga is that people treat the words jinani and pundit as being the same - knowers of worldly knowledge. But according to Baba these two terms, jiṋánii and pan'd'ita, are not interchangeable. The term jiṋánii refers to one who has acquired worldly knowledge while a pan'd'ita is one who has gained spiritual knowledge or self-realisation.

Thus, there are two root verbs in Saḿskrta that describe the process of knowing: jiṋá and pan'd'. The act of acquiring worldly knowledge is jiṋá and the endeavour of gaining spiritual knowledge through sadhana is pan'd'. So we should take note of the distinction Baba makes between these two terms and use them properly.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Conclusion

Lastly, it should be remembered that external knowledge is temporary in nature and is therefore quite limited - even defective. Whereas internal knowledge or knowing oneself is lasting and is therefore perfect in nature. This is also an important difference between jiṋá and pan'd'.

Thus in the realm of knowledge, there are two distinctly different root verbs in the Saḿskrta language: jiṋá and pan'd'. The first refers to worldly knowledge while the latter refers to spiritual knowledge.

In Him,
Yuktatman

All these above guidelines are based on Ananda Vacanamrtam part 29 chapter 7 (Hindi edition).

Common terms & derivations

These following terms come from the root verb jiṋá: jiṋánii, jiṋána, jinata', jinanaya, jinainjana etc.

The following terms come from the root verb pan’d’: pan'd'ita, pan'd'a, pa'n'd'u, pa'n'd'e, pa'n'd'eya etc

Why sadhaka must have Saḿskrta name + 2 more

    Baba

Why sadhaka must have Saḿskrta name

    Namaskar,

Some feel uncomfortable using their Saḿskrta names in public. Yet those Saḿskrta names give deep meaning and spiritual value to their life. We all know that Baba's unique system of Saḿskrta names is one key aspect of the universal culture of our Ananda Marga and integral to the formation of one human society.

    Baba's story in DMC

    (1) During His tour of Berlin Sector, Baba Himself was emphasizing the importance of Saḿskrta names. Time and again, He beautifully explained the meaning of various names and, on multiple occasions, He also corrected the then PA Dada ji's pronunciation of Saḿskrta names. This all shows how Baba was very particular on this point, and one beautiful scene also comes to mind.

At one DMC, we held our usual kaoshikii and tandava contests and, when Dada ji called out the names of the participants, he announced the name of one sister, Ama'vati. Immediately, Baba pointed out that this name meant “darkness” or “new moon”; and, then and there, in front of one and all, Baba graciously told that her name should be Jyotismati, meaning “divine effulgence”. And, in that special way, that sister took on this new name. Certainly this was Baba's blessing on her. Here, the overall idea is that clearly Baba was ensuring every sadhaka has a proper Saḿskrta name.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Infusion of spirituality

Here are some of the well known facts about Saḿskrta.

    (2) The AM system of Saḿskrta names has a beautiful and deep spiritual significance. These Saḿskrta names have a proper spiritual meaning and that is why Baba has implemented this system in AM. Baba is always encouraging the use of Saḿskrta names because they make human existence glorified and meaningful. Human life is an ideological flow-- so ideology should be reflected in each and every action.

So Saḿskrta names carry a special vibration and import. Whereas legal names etc from most other languages, especially from many European countries, do not have any meaning—or they may even carry some dogmatic meaning.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Point of unity

    (3) Every Ananda Margii knows that Baba has created a beautiful system to form one human society. In that system, we will all have common names using the commonality of the Saḿskrta language. Baba has beautifully explained in His grammar books, and in so many other discourses, that Saḿskrta links to most of the world’s languages. The overall sense is that Saḿskrta names provide a social spark and a beautiful spiritual link.

    (4) So Saḿskrta is a unifying language for the entire world. Saḿskrta has a relationship with most languages because they have their roots in Saḿskrta. So the common language for naming can only be done through Saḿskrta. Due to its unique connection with nearly every language base, Saḿskrta unifies humanity and serves as a tool for forming one human society.

    (5) Naturally then Saḿskrta should be treated as one's own. Today, most of the major languages have Saḿskrta roots in one form or another. So Saḿskrta stands as a common bond that unites all people.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Baba's distinct style

    (6) In His Ananda Vacanamrtam series, Baba has given several discourses explaining Saḿskrta names.
    (7) When Baba initiated new avadhutas, He always gave new names and explained the meaning of those names. This further demonstrates how Baba places much importance on the Saḿskrta language and that it is the ideal language for naming.
    (8) Our spiritual names have deep significance, and, as Saḿskrta is such a concentrated language, even small words contain a very detailed and elaborate meaning.
    (9) Furthermore, using Saḿskrta names is Baba’s beautiful blessing on humanity, and we should be strict in following His dharmic guidelines and system on the use of Saḿskrta names.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, "At the time of initiation or shortly afterwards, those who do not have a Saḿskrta name should be given one...The Saḿskrta name should be used in all worldly dealings." (2)

    Conclusion

Here's is Baba's blessing that in each and every sphere of life we have the opportunity to implement dharma in the society.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "In this entire universe, the wind is blowing in our favour. It is the most opportune time to do something for the present and future humanity. At this critical juncture one moment of time has the value of 100 years. Utilise the present position -- utilise the situation." (3)

    Namaskar,
    In Him,
    Ba’ba’shiis’a

    We should be courageous

    (10) So all margiis should feel proud to use their Saḿskrta name. However, those who lack basic courage or suffer from laja (shyness), often just give their mundane name when introducing themselves-- or when writing etc. And good family margiis always give their children a Saḿskrta name, and that is their real name which is used in all legal matters. In this way, we are moving forward at a very fast speed in making one human society where all are moving in the same direction, i.e. towards Parama Purusa.

Saḿskrta names bring beauty & charm

    (11) The use of Saḿskrta names is very important. It is a key ingredient in life, and, without that, life is lackluster. It is just like whatever recipe you make, if there is a lack of salt, it becomes tasteless. Likewise for those margiis not using a Saḿskrta name, their personality is devoid of charm. By not using or writing the Saḿskrta name, that exposes the whole identity that this person is a new margii. Those who are bhaktas easily understand all these points. But due to lack of bhakti and / or materialistic tendencies, some feel shy to use their Saḿskrta names.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Cause of not using

    (12) Baba says in SS part III that those who are not established on the path of spirituality are shy to practice in front of others. So usually those who do not have deep devotion, feel shy to reveal themselves as Ananda Margiis and they feel shy to tell others that they are vegetarian and most of the time they do not like to tell or use their own Saḿskrta name. Or the Saḿskrta names of others. But this is only because of their weakness of the mind and lack of proper moral strength. In Subhasita Samgraha part 3, Baba explains that those who suffer from such a weakness of mind due to materialism or other negative philosophies get these psychic complexes.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Those who are reared in the cradle of materialistic ideologies, feel shy or ashamed at first to sit in meditation in the presence of others." (1)

Likewise, those who do not like to use their own Saḿskrta name in public is the expression of a new sadhaka, as evidenced by the above teaching.

    Following our dharma

    (13) Baba's beautiful ideas about Saḿskrta should be propagated more and more. By that way, along with sadhana, new and old sadhakas will easily cultivate the requisite courage to use their Saḿskrta name for all realms of life. That shyness to use their Saḿskrta name will fade away. So this is another reason why Baba's teachings related with Saḿskrta should be highlighted and explained.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Universality of Saḿskrta

These following interesting and unique points given by Baba all point towards the universality of the Saḿskrta language and how most of the various local languages from around the globe find their roots and origin in the Saḿskrta.

Ananda Marga philosophy states: "In Saḿskrta the word 'duhitr' is derived by adding trn' to the verbal root duh-- in Latin, duhitar; in modern English, 'daughter'. Since the word 'duhitr' contains the letter 'ha', the English 'daughter' is also spelled  with an 'h', however over time its pronunciation has been lost. From this it can clearly be deduced that both English and Saḿskrta are Vedic languages, hence the many similarities between the two. For example, the word "night" is naktram' in Vedic and noctrum in old Latin. The Latin adjective is 'nocturnal'." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Silik in Arabic means 'fine fibre'. The fine fibres that came to Bengal from China were given the Saḿskrta name ciina'm'shuka. This cinna'm'shuka was given the Farsi name resham and the Arabic name silk. Arab merchants used to export this cinna'm'shuka to the markets of Europe. When they were heard saying the Arabic word in Europe, cinna'm'shuka became 'silk' with the help of a little fault pronunciation." (5)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The proper eating and digesting of the surplus food in the appendix is called romanthana in Saḿskrta … In good English we call it "rumination" and in spoken English "chewing the cud." (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The word jina'na (knowledge) is derived from the Saḿskrta root verb jina' (to know).... The verb jina' was changed into keno in old Latin language. In Saḿskrta the pronunciation is jina', in Bengali jina, in the Rgvedic language jina, in Old Latin keno, and in Modern English "know"-- as the original spelling of the word was "kenow", we still spell the word with a "k" at the beginning without actually pronouncing it." (YP) Baba says, "Vedic Saḿskrta is a language about 15,000 years old... in Saḿskrta each and every word is created from a root verb." (7)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Sam'skrta is a classical subject as well as an ancient language. It is the mother of all the mother languages of South Asia and Southeast Asia." (8)

Ananda Marga philosophy says. "There is a very close relationship between Vedic and all other classical languages of the world. If Vedic is properly nourished and encouraged it will encourage the unity of the world and a cordial relationship amongst human beings will develop." (9)

Ananda Marga philosophy explains, "Latin is the daughter of Vedic and so is Sam'skrta. If Sam'skrta is used human unity will be encouraged and human beings will move closer together. See how sweet the link is between Vedic, Sam'skrta and the other classical languages of the world? So you should encourage the study of Sam'skrta." (10)

Hence it is clear that Saḿskrta is one unifying force and that is linked with all languages of the globe. Hence every person has the right to call Saḿskrta as their own.

Nowadays, when the world is moving deeper and deeper into crisis, more and more margiis and acaryas will have a greater role to play in the general society. People are looking for answers and directions about which way to go. They see that politicians are trustless, various disasters are on the rise, and psychic tension is increasing. As a means of finding some calm in all this chaos, many are turning to yoga, which is experiencing a world-wide boom. So, from many angles, the common society is reaching out for answers, and, by Baba's grace, we can provide them with the proper path.

    Remembering who we are

Most importantly, we should remember our dharma, and we should also remember who we are, as we move forward keeping Sadguru Baba’s system in mind.

Baba, the infinite kindness and sweet aroma which You showered on the animate entities of this dusty earth You also bestowed eternally in my mind. By listening to the melody of the song which You sang, even the most filthy became perfectly pure.

Saḿskrta: special use in AM + 4 more

    Baba
    Saḿskrta: special use in AM

    Namaskar,

We all know Baba has graciously come on this earth to spread His sublime ideals—i.e. the teachings of Ananda Marga ideology—to enable all human beings to progress. To achieve this, He needed to ensure that what He spoke was properly understood. For this reason, from the outset, He began educating us about the Saḿskrta language. Because Saḿskrta contains many of the words, phrases, and concepts needed to express the tenets of Ananda Marga ideology. To ensure those Saḿskrta words were properly understood, He clarified and expounded upon their meaning and usage. By this way, Saḿskrta became an integral part of the teachings of Ananda Marga ideology.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Saḿskrta is pervasive in our AM way of life

Baba has used Saḿskrta in so many unique ways in our Ananda Marga. He has put the Roman Saḿskrta alphabet in the beginning of every Ananda Marga book; He has made the system for giving everyone Saḿskrta names; He has given all mantras in Saḿskrta—as well as the vast majority of His sutras and shlokas. And Saḿskrta is used in all our social ceremonies like marriages and baby naming, as well as in all our collective spiritual gatherings & practices. And Sadguru Baba has carefully explained the meaning of countless Saḿskrta words—like bhakti, dharma, tantra, mantra, Ista etc—in His various discourses. Plus there are so many other examples how Baba has used Saḿskrta to put forth His Ananda Marga ideology. From 1955 up through 1990, Baba educated us about Saḿskrta so that we could develop a better understanding of His sublime ideals—as other languages did not have words to express what He wished to say.

Saḿskrta related with so many languages

That is why, early on, Baba explained about the importance of language in discourses like 'Expression and Symbolisation'. And that is why in countless discourses in Ananda Vacanamrtam and Subhasita Samgraha, Baba explains the meaning, derivation, and application of so many Saḿskrta words. A large number of His discourses begin in this very manner.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

And then, later on, when a strong foundation of understanding Saḿskrta had already been established, Baba spoke in greater detail about Saḿskrta and its special relation with all the other languages around the globe. In His books Varńa Vijiṋána, Varńa Vicitra, and Shabda Cayaniká, and related discourses, Baba is explaining about Saḿskrta and its link with so many languages spoken on this earth, including French, Hebrew, Spanish, Urdu, Latin, Greek, English, Farsi, Russian, Tagalog, Hindi, almost all Indian languages, Bengali, Thai, Indonesian, and Angika, where Saḿskrta words are used abundantly etc.

Baba says, "There is a very close relationship between Vedic [old Saḿskrta] and all other classical languages of the world. If Vedic [old Saḿskrta] is properly nourished and encouraged it will encourage the unity of the world and a cordial relationship amongst human beings will develop." (1)

Baba says, “Saḿskrta is a classical subject as well as an ancient language. It is the mother of all the mother languages of South Asia and Southeast Asia. All North Indian languages and South Indian languages like Oriya, Marathii and Konkoni are of Saḿskrtic origin.” (2)

And, all of this was done for the greater goal of bringing unity on this struggle torn earth, not for highlighting any particular language per se.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How to best understand His sublime ideals

Baba's emphasis on language holds universal appeal as He is propagating Ananda Marga ideology, thus He wants for all the languages of the world to be expanded to best convey human thought and understanding. This He has encouraged in so many discourses and talks like, 'Expression and Symbolisation'.

Baba's teaching of Saḿskrta grew from the teaching of prefixes and suffixes to a full linguistic, historical, social, and cultural survey of Saḿskrta and how it relates to today's world based humanity—all so that everyone could best understand His sublime ideals of Ananda Marga.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "India is one and indivisible...Let Sam'skrta be the national language, as this will provide equal opportunity to all." (4)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "At the time of initiation or shortly afterwards, those who do not have a Saḿskrta name should be given one by the A'carya." (5)

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "The Saḿskrta name should be used in all worldly dealings." (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "I am using Sam'skrta slokas and not Pa'li because Pa'li may not be intelligible to you. Sam'skrta is better understood. That is why I am using Sam'skrta slokas." (7)

    Conclusion

Saḿskrta is a key point for bridging the divide and fostering common bonds amongst all peoples.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Latin is the daughter of Vedic [ancient Saḿskrta] and so is [modern] Saḿskrta. If Saḿskrta is used human unity will be encouraged and human beings will move closer together. See how sweet the link is between Vedic, Saḿskrta and the other classical languages of the world? So you should encourage the study of Saḿskrta.” (3)

    Namaskar,
    In Him,
    Aditya Sen

Some think that Shabda Cayaniká is wholly focused on the Bengali language. And they have similar thoughts with regards to Varńa Vijiṋána and Varńa Vicitrá. When, in reality, in those publications, Baba has dedicated approximately 90% of His book to artfully recounting stories and tales, and also discussing topics like geology, archaeology, local and world history, geography, sociology, literature etc. So truly speaking, 90% of the material in those books (Shabda Cayaniká, Varńa Vijiṋána, and Varńa Vicitrá) is not about grammar or any particular language per se, but rather wholly unique stories and tales, and topics like geology, archaeology, local and world history, geography, sociology, literature etc.

And in the remaining 10% of those series that is about grammar, of that maybe only 10% or 15% is about the Bengali language, and the far larger portion (i.e. 85% —90% of the grammar aspect) is about Saḿskrta and the various classical languages of the world. So the fact stands that only about 1% or 2% of the entire publication is about the Bengali language, and a far greater emphasis has been placed on Saḿskrta and other classical languages (8% or 9%), and topics of human understanding (90%) like history, geology, archaeology etc.
    https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

    Our aim: propagate Guru’s teachings

True disciples have no other aim in life than to highlight Guru's teachings. Only our goal is to propagate the Ananda Marga which Guru has given. This is our sole reason for coming on this earth. Only we should propagate the true Ananda Marga which Baba has given. Our special endeavour is to propagate what He spoke in its original form because the very words which Guru spoke are mantra for us and that alone can lead humanity into the golden era.

Baba says, "Finally one must remember, Mantramu'lam' Guruva'kyam." (9)

    Raising truthful children

Ananda philosophy states, “Today parents may rightly say, “We have almost no vital energy left after exchanging blows and counter-blows with life. We have no chance to mould the minds of our children with the care and tenderness of our hearts. All the sweetness and finer sensibilities of our minds have been sucked dry by the harsh realities of life. How can we take care of our children? We cannot even provide them with proper food and clothing. How can we know what they are thinking? Do we have the time to understand anything properly at all? We know children should be taught through the medium of play and entertainment, both at home and outside, but is it possible for us to do that? We even have to disturb our talented son at his studies to send him to the grocer’s to buy salt, cooking oil, spices, etc. We know it is wrong, but there is no alternative, for keeping a servant is beyond our means.”"
"There may be some truth in this, but it is not the point at issue here. In order to develop a healthy outlook, the most important thing children need is robust idealism. To impart this, parents require only two virtues: self-restraint and good judgement. Let us discuss good judgement first."
"When the parents are about to go on a trip or go to a show, or when they are invited to a pleasant function or a social outing, the children may start whining or nattering to accompany them. At such times many parents tell lies without a qualm; somehow they dupe their children and leave. When the children realize what has happened, they also learn to tell lies; and to hide their intentions or their actions from their parents, they gradually start lying more and more." (1)

Note: Without realising it, parents teach their children both good things and bad things. Being an ideal parent is not easy. Unknowingly parents often teach their children the ways of lies and deception.

    How intellectual knowledge is useless

Ananda Marga ideology says, "People wish to know everything but the human cranium is small, and the brain even smaller. So how much can one know? Also whatever one learns today one forgets tomorrow. Yes, one who was a Mahámohapádháya, a pandit, would no longer be able to remember the “sabdarupa” of “Nara” if after leaving his or her original occupation he or she became engaged in agricultural work. This is the situation that usually happens. So the main thing is “know all – know one”. What is the use of reading and forgetting so many books? If one reads more books one will forget more things and make more mistakes. So what is the use? No permanent benefit is derived from being a book-worm. I encourage the general education – laokika education – so that people can understand the shallowness of laokika knowledge.” (1)

Note 1: Laokika / worldly knowledge: Anything related with the relative world - i.e. all the facts and figures related with this ever-changing expressed universe whether they be mathematical theories, political treatises. All these things fall within the realm of laokika / worldly knowledge.

Note 2: In His above divine teaching, Baba guides us that intellectual progress is meaningless in the absence of spirituality. Only self-realisation is the real knowledge. When one does sadhana and studies dharmic scriptures then one realises how intellectual knowledge is completely futile for attaining perfect peace and eternal happiness. Whereas by atma-jinana (self-realisation) one will automatically know the 'ins' and 'outs' of everything. That is why knowing oneself is the real knowledge. Know one, know all.

Note 3: It is not impossible to satiate the heart with worldly knowledge since the human heart can only be satiated with the divine bliss attained through sadhana. But just talking about sadhana the whole day also will not bring eternal peace and happiness; one has to do sadhana. For example memorizing all the facets of srsti cakra (cycle of creation) will not lead to true spiritual realisation. For that one must perform meditation - sadhana.

Final Note: The grand conclusion of Baba's above teaching is that the reason why intellectual knowledge is highly needed is so that one can understand its uselessness and futility.

    How different vibrations affect us

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The stamina to stand vibrations differs in different people. Hence various degrees of happiness or sorrow are experienced by different people, and these differences depend on their respective mental constitutions. The subtle causes of these different mental constitutions are their acquired samskáras or reactive momenta, and the crude causes are their nerve cells, nerve tissues, glandular secretions, etc. The sudden vibrational impact on the body and mind makes the mind react violently, resulting in the cessation of the cardiac functions. This also explains the death of a person struck by lightning. The sudden contact of the eyes with an extremely dazzling radiance often results in the total impairment of vision. If we look directly at the brilliant sun for a few moments, our visual power becomes temporarily stunned and we cannot see anything for some time. Similarly, when some very high pitched or loud sound strikes the eardrum, the power of hearing may be destroyed. The sensitivity of every organ may be suspended by the impact of any violent vibration; this stupefaction, if the intensity of the vibrational impact is very great, may even become permanent. Yet sometimes powerful vibrations may help stimulate and restore the power of organs which have not been functioning for years. You must have heard of a person who had been blind or deaf and dumb since his childhood, regaining the lost power of his impaired organs in his latter years either by stroke of lightning or by being suddenly informed of an extremely happy or sad news."
