Note: This letter is only for those who have reverence for Sadguru Baba Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and try to follow His Ananda Marga ideology.

Namaskar,

Parents have a very big responsibility for their children. They have to care for the physical, mental, and spiritual development of their progeny and nourish them to grow in an all-round way - in three spheres. This is their parental duty. Devoid of this, the relation will not be treated as ideal. Especially for those parents who care only for the physical aspect, or only the physical and psychic development - and do not care about spiritual development of their progeny. Such parents cannot be looked upon as ideal guardians of their children.

Fragile, aged parents live frustrated, depressed life

Unfortunately, these days in materialistic countries some guardians and parents are not properly fulfilling their duty towards their progeny. In response, their progeny do not feel any obligation towards their parents or family. A percentage of the population falls in this category. So ultimately both progeny and parents reached a compromise. They decided that at least once in a year they will celebrate a particular day as Father's Day and a single day for Mother's Day etc. In this way their selfish interest became satisfied. Because one day is much easier than having to fulfill one’s duty on an ongoing, daily basis.

In an ideal society, it is the regular duty of the progeny to look after their parents; and, certainly, the parents are to look after their progeny. Now, however, some are obsessed with the self-centered philosophy of materialism. They have forgotten their respective roles - parents and their progeny. This is especially evident in materialistic countries. Children in their teenage years often leave the house to live elsewhere, and elderly parents are pushed away and neglected in their old age. Fragile parents are sent to retirement centers where they live a frustrated, depressed, and institutionalized existence. So on one side the children are suffering and on the other side the parents / elders are suffering.

This self-centered philosophy or capitalistic bent of mind led to the birth of the Mother's Day / Father’s Day dogma and they feel satisfied: "Alright - one day will be Father's Day and one day will be Mother's Day. And then all my duties are over until next year."


Devious ploy of capitalists: dogma of Father's Day

Both "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" were started by capitalists. Such capitalists want to sell their goods - for one or another reason. And they exploit the common people in a very indirect and cunning way. Businesses create the psychic hunger in the customer's mind that, "You need these products". Capitalists do this with even the most unnecessary items. In response, the innocent public feels that, "Yes it is very essential for me to have those things. I must purchase them." By this way, capitalists empty the pockets of the unassuming masses.

So the false holidays of Father's Day and Mother's Day are the capitalists' selfish inventions. The sole aim is for the common people to run out to the stores and buy more products - i.e. special commercially produced items to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day. Here is Baba's guideline from His Prout discourse about economy and psycho-economy:

Prout philosophy states, "Capitalists, in their singular or collective roles, exploit society through their gigantic propaganda machinery, and create unhealthy, artificial demands which not only poison the mind but encourage dangerous habits detrimental to psychic sanctity and expansion." (1)

This type of mentality is the cause of the invention of this relatively new dogma, Father's Day and Mother's Day. Because, in this way, capitalists get a huge benefit. And although it started in the western materialistic areas, now it is spreading step by step around the globe and the so-called third world countries strive to emulate so-called first-world states. So the disease of this capitalistic venture is being passed on to other places around the globe.

Ananda Marga: sacred duty towards parents

As Ananda Margiis we aim to live according to the tantric vision where motherhood and fatherhood are honoured and respected. This intimate relation is maintained every moment due to ongoing love, care, and commitment. Only those who have a lesser degree of love between parent and child can embrace the yearly Mother's Day and Father's Day programs. We are to stand true to His tantric system and fully embrace our roles as mother and father, and not get pulled into the degrading ocean of materialistic values, where Mother's Day and Father's Day reign.


Great responsibility

Keeping this ideal in the forefront of one's mind, no one will get frustrated reading this letter. The aim is not to go against anyone's sentiment, nor attack anyone emotionally. Rather, our goal as Ananda Margiis is to uphold the flag of tantra. In certain of our materialistic countries the annual "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" celebrations are going on in regular fashion. This year, so-called Mother's Day was on Sunday, 10 May, and Father's Day will be held on Sunday, 21 June -- though this may vary from country to country.

At first glance, it may seem like "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" are noble enterprises. But, upon further examination, we can see how they are the product of materialism / capitalism. So we should apply our vivek.

Every sadhaka has great responsibility toward their parents. According to Ananda Marga ideology, one’s duty towards their parents is quite clear. And the responsibility parents have for their children is of a similar nature. Ananda Marga has been given to build up one human society, and in that human society one healthy family is a key component. In that healthy family, all direct worldly relations should live together. That is one miniature form of society. In their happiness and sorrow, they will move collectively towards one goal - Parama Purusa. On that basis, Baba has made the aforementioned Caryacarya rule where every sadhaka has great responsibility toward their parents.


Conclusion

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Four kinds of debt are irredeemable – debt to father, debt to mother, debt to ácárya, and debt to guru (divine debt)....But however much service one renders, one will not redeem the four debts until Moks'a (salvation) is attained.” (2)

The central idea is that when something is not given importance on an everyday basis then a weekly, monthly, or yearly program is fixed. Just like everyday is not a holiday in government offices, so they take rest on Saturday and Sunday.

But for things done on a regular or daily basis, then no special day is allotted for those engagements. Because they are performed day-in, day-out. In a similar way, those things which occur on a monthly basis are not also celebrated on a yearly basis. Rather, every month certain days are fixed. And for festivals that come once in a year then a yearly date is made. But service to mother and father is a regular daily affair.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The human body develops over the course of some months in the mother's womb. Then after birth it continues to develop up until approximately the age of thirty-nine (in tropical countries)." (3)


Special bond between mother & child

We should embrace the tantric ideal of motherhood and think of the great bond that develops between mother and child. Firstly, the mother advances through pregnancy and nurtures the baby as her own, while in the womb. During the 40-week pregnancy, a mother develops tremendous emotional attachment and love for the child. With childbirth, the mother takes on the maternal responsibility of caring for the helpless babe each and every moment. As the babe grows through childhood, the mother is there every step of the way offering love, help, support, and care.

Indeed, a mother has an inherent and innate bond with her child. She always does her best for the child's well-being. Mothers always sacrifice for their children. And the child in turn feels an unmatched closeness with its mother. That is why when a child is emotionally hurt, or confused, it is the mother he goes to for answers. The child has implicit trust and faith in its mother, and the mother has a deep emotional link for her child.

A mother will do everything in her power to raise her child in the best possible way. No mother would ever neglect her child. Such is the bond. Even when the child has reached into young adulthood and a veritable adult, still the mother cares for and watches over her "child." Verily, there is a deeply intimate link between mother and child – and motherhood is honoured as one of the revered roles in life.

Baba did not call them mother

It is Baba's policy to never go against anyone's psychology, hence during His marriage blessings He would always speak to the newlywed couple in a particular manner. When the newly married husband and wife would come up onto the stage for His marriage blessing during DMC, then they would always offer a garland to Baba.

Baba would then give His blessing and return the garland back to the wife.

During this sweet and charming interaction, if the newlywed wife was Indian then Baba would address her as mother and say, "Take this mala mother and keep it with you...". In contrast, if the newlywed wife was not Indian then Baba would address her as “little girl” and say, "Take this mala little girl and keep it with you...".

Baba took this approach with thousands of newlyweds during hundreds of DMC's. Here the point is that Baba understood that some of the newly married wives from western countries etc, did not like to be called mother. So He called them "little girl". Actually, in materialistic places, even older women do not like to be called mother, while in those tantric cultures, even little girls are addressed as maa or mother.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Very often a doting father will take his little daughter on his lap and call her “mother”. But everyone knows that the child is his daughter, not his mother." (4)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In the Vajraya'na Buddhist age, the idea first developed that the basic identity of a woman was neither “sister” nor “daughter” but “mother”. To support this concept, the Vajraya'na Buddhist Tantrics used to say that the person whom the newborn baby notices immediately after its birth is neither its sister, its wife nor its daughter, but its mother. So that on the wider canvas of this universe the identity of a woman, from first to last, was portrayed as a mother. She first appears as a young mother to a newborn and later when she attains maturity in life, she establishes her identity as the [grand] mother [of a large household]." (5)

Capitalists’ tool of psycho-economic exploitation

Psycho-economic exploitation is the latest form of dangerous and all-devouring capitalist exploitation. It is a special type of exploitation which first weakens and paralyses people psychologically in various ways, and then exploits them economically. Some of the methods of psycho-economic exploitation include, first, the suppression of the indigenous language and culture of local people; secondly, the extensive propagation of pseudo-culture, exemplified by pornographic literature which debases people’s mind and particularly undermines the vitality of the youth; thirdly, the imposition of numerous restrictions on women, forcing them to be economically dependent on men; fourthly, an unpsychological education system with frequent political interference by vested interests; fifthly, the negation of dharma in the name of secularism; sixthly, the balkanization of society into numerous castes and groups; seventhly, the damaging of society by the use of unnatural and harmful methods of birth control; and eighthly, placing the control of different mass media, such as newspapers, radio and television, in the hands of capitalists. Both intellectual exploitation and psycho-economic exploitation are great dangers to the human race today.” (6)

Purport:

My Parama Purusa, by Your causeless grace, today I have gotten You in a new form of exquisite beauty - in a more loving way in Guru cakra. I have a more intimate relation now in dhya'na, and all the 24 hrs. It is Your krpa’. Earlier my mind was busy and involved in a variety of degenerating deeds - mostly negative actions. But now there are no such distractions. My mind is one-pointed and only ensconced in Your exquisite bhakti, by Your sweet will.

Baba, in the past I was treading upon a dirty zig-zag path, day and night, which was shrouded in pitch-black darkness, leading to hell. It was the path of indulgence and pseudo-culture. There was no hope or relief. My life was covered in the soot of charcoal, all the time. By the attraction of Your endless prema, I looked towards You. My Dearmost, my most loving One, by having a glance of You, the wheels of my chariot turned around and started heading on the path of dharma. In my dead river of bhakti, a flood has come. Now it is overflowing with a sparkling, sublime, current of fresh water of supreme love. Now my life has become refulgent. It is all due to Your mercy.

Baba, in those days before coming to the path of sadhana, all around me there was darkness and misery. There was coal-blackness, and after that there was even more murkiness. The whole atmosphere was pitch dark. And beyond that Cimmerian blackness there was extra thick soot leading to hell. This was the path of pseudo-culture and the underworld. My whole life was shrouded in depression. That very time, with great empathy, You came with Your beautiful brilliance. As far as I could see, everywhere it was full of refulgence. I feel the boundlessness of Your infinite and sweet presence. You have inundated my mind and soul with bliss. In whichever direction I look, everything is saturated with a’nandam. The atmosphere is filled with Your boundless compassion. You won over my mind and filled my life with Your eternal blessings. I feel Your special proximity in my heart. Baba, You have captivated me, stolen my mind, and filled my core with Your love - para’bhakti...

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Today human beings, to whatever country they may belong, should, on the one side, propagate an anti-exploitation sentiment (exploitation does not mean exploitation in the economic sphere only, it includes all sorts of exploitation), and form strong nations in their respective countries; and, on the other side, preach the theory of one spiritual inheritance – that every living being is the child of the Supreme Entity, and that all the people of all nations belong to the same family. This will have to be explained to all, that there will be clash among different nations as long as national feelings exist. People may talk of disarmament, but military preparation will go on underground. And if people dedicate themselves to the welfare of the entire human race, their respective nations will also be benefited indirectly because their nations are not outside the universe! Along with the theory of spiritual inheritance, one Cosmic ideology will have to be propagated too, and that ideology is that one Supreme Entity – the Cosmic Entity – is the goal of all living beings. This spiritual sentiment will keep human beings united for all time to come. No other theory can save the human race.” (1)

Sadvipra recipe

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "It is meaningless to impart diikśá under five years of age, since at this stage the nerve cells of a human child are undeveloped. Consequently, at age of five, there is no disposition or propensity for intricate types of spiritual practices. But, in absences of initiation of five years of age, there is apprehension of the child going astray. Verily, all the human vices are acquired during the age of five to fifteen years. The child has a great inclination to imitate. It hears abusive words and learns them. The robbers sons turn to be robbers only on account of environmental influence. For this reason, if the child be initiated on attaining five years of age, it can develop into a perfect human being – it will be a perfect man." (1)

An issue for 7000 years

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The Sanskrit equivalent for marriage is viváha (vi – vah + ghaiṋ): it means, after the ceremony, the man and woman can no longer live as libertines or as irresponsible so-called family people. They have to discharge their full obligations as bharttá and kalatra, responsible husband and responsible wife.”

“Another Sanskrit equivalent for “woman” is nárii, which is feminine gender. But Shiva used the term kalatra, in the neuter; for to her husband a woman is a wife, but to her children and other members of the society, she is as dignified as her male counterpart. So by declaring a married lady to be kalatra, Shiva gave her special status, and addressed her in neuter terms.”

“The liberal meaning of the term viváha is “live one’s life in a new way with a special type of responsibility”. This is the underlying significance of the Shaeva system of marriage.”

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In His life, Shiva Himself married with this commitment. We can say without the least hesitation that Shiva was the first person in this world to marry in the proper sense of the term..” (1)

Note: That which was common 7000 years ago has now again come into vogue: That same disease has become prevalent today. A huge percentage of people around the globe are leading libertine life - especially in the materialistic areas. They produce children and neglect to take any responsibility. They do not like to be bound in conjugal relations and shoulder the responsibility of helping the child. The ones who suffer the most are the children and the mother. Often such children wind up in foster care - mentally and physically scarred. It is a serious crisis - watch out. Where capitalism is growing that disease will spread. Our duty is to propagate this teaching - if we bring even one libertine onto the path of responsibility then at least to some small degree the problem is solved.

Mental ailments: identify, avoid, & cure

Namaskar,

The following letter addresses various psychic diseases and their cure. In the life of a sadhaka, a disease-free mind is essential. If one suffers from any psychic disease, they should try to remove it so they can move forward properly. Otherwise, that mental disease will impede their progress.

Fortunately, if anyone practices sadhana regularly, their psychic disease(s) will naturally dissipate and disappear. If anyone is deeply involved in meditation and doing very good sadhana, by His grace, then their psychic disease will quickly be removed from the mind.

The tricky part is that the mind burdened by a psychic disease cannot do deep sadhana; that is the problem. Hence, psychological training in the form of auto-suggestion and outer suggestion is needed to get rid of the disease. And that is what is discussed below.

Suffixing caste after name is psychic disease
 
Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Members of a particular race who consider themselves superior to others also very frequently inflict injustices on other sections of society. The expulsion (see note *) of the Jews from Germany by Hitler’s so-called superior Aryan race is a glaring example of racial injustice in society. In this country, also, injustices on Harijans by the so-called superior races have caused a tremendous amount of disruption in society. To obviate this type of social injustice, the first attempt should be to do away with racial distinctions in society. In Ananda Marga the first step that one takes is to forget one’s race or sect – to no longer identify oneself with one’s race, caste or sect – regardless of whether it was superior or inferior.” (A Few Problems Solved - 7, Social Psychology) (1)

She saw a ghost and died

Ananda Marga ideology states, "I had a certain acquaintance whose garden was quite large. One night his wife thought she saw a ghost in a corner of the garden. In Bihar, a female ghost is called “cuŕeil” in Hindi. At the sight of the imagined ghost she cried out in fear, and fainted. She never regained consciousness and died some time later. The next night the same gentleman came out of his house at the same time. He also thought he saw the ghost. “Why should people have to die one after the other in this way?” he thought. Stepping forward to strike at the imaginary ghost with a stick, he suddenly saw that it was nothing but a bush which, in the moonlight, looked just like a human being. His wife had died for nothing, terrified by the deceptive image of a bush. Most so-called ghosts are like this. Towards the end of the rainy season rotting vegetation often gives out a gas, called marsh gas or will-o’-the-wisp, which bursts into flame when it comes in contact with oxygen. This burning gas may easily be taken to be a ghost. This is how a fear complex can develop." (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "The defeatist complex also strikes deep in the human mind. “How will I possibly be able to do the work? How will I be able to fight against such heavy odds? How will I be able to do my job properly?” Because people think like this before they act, they are unable to do their work properly. The defeatist complex weakens their minds. Had they been bolder they would have been more successful." (3)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "One must uproot all sorts of complexes from the mind. No complex should be entertained in the physical, psychic or spiritual spheres because all are equally detestable." (4)

Inferiority complex and defeatist psychology

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Due to a defective social order. Some people have to live like slaves in the society and thus suffer from a strong inferiority complex – their heads remain forever bowed – while others inherit vast wealth as well as family pride from their ancestors and keep their heads held so high that at times it appears as if it will fall backwards. These complexes are due to a defective social order. The complex is in the crude physical world and in the socio-economic strata." (5)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "All are the progeny of Parama Puruśa. Even so, some people think that because they are endowed with less intellect, knowledge, financial capacity or physical strength than others, they are inferior. Such an inferiority complex contracts their minds and retards their progress. It must be overcome." (6)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "At the very outset, the fascist exploiters select a weak community which inhabits a region rich in natural resources. The fascists socially and culturally uproot the victimized community by imposing a foreign language and culture on them. Because the local people cannot easily express their individual and collective feelings and sentiments in a foreign language, they develop a defeatist psychology and inferiority complex with respect to the exploiters. This defeatist psychology destroys the natural spiritedness and will to fight of the local people, and the fascists skillfully utilize this golden opportunity. The primary interest of the fascist exploiters is to gradually suck the vitality of the local community so that they can pillage and plunder their natural resources, but if necessary they will even obliterate the local community from the face of the earth." (7)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "A person must not suffer from an inferiority complex, because that person and his or her friends and siblings are all the progeny of the same Progenitor. They come from the same origin [as all]; they are of the same Father. So why should a person suffer from any inferiority complex? Again, you should not suffer from a superiority complex, because all are your brothers and sisters. All are the glorious children of that Supreme Father. No, you must not develop any superiority complex." (8)

All are values & respected

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Nobody is unimportant, nobody is insignificant. Each and every existence is valuable. And the life of an old widow of, say, 100 years, is also not meaningless. Her existence also bears certain significance. If an ordinary ant dies a premature death, the equilibrium of the entire universe will be lost. Nobody is unimportant, so you must not develop the psychology of helplessness or hopelessness or defeatist complex or fear complex, because the Supreme Father, the Supreme noumenal entity is always with you." (9)

Ananda Marga ideology says, "Why should you suffer from a fear complex or an inferiority complex, when the Supreme Father is your father, when you all are the children of the same Father; why should you suffer from any inferiority complex or any fear complex, when the Supreme Father is with you? You are not weak. You are very strong, because the Almighty Father, the omnipotent Supreme Father, is with you to help you – so you must not encourage the psychology of weakness, or an inferiority complex or a fear complex. He is with you, always He is with you to help you. You are never alone." (10)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In the field of spirituality there must not be any complex, neither fear complex nor shy complex nor any other complex. So the scriptures saying that if you do not obey Him you will go to Hell, like this, these scriptures are the worst enemy of human society. Because these scriptures create a complex, a fear complex, in the human mind, and that fear complex creates disparity in this human society." (11)

Defective social order injects an inferiority complex

Ananda Marga ideology states, "There cannot be any complex in the spiritual level or existential sphere. In spirituality there is no complex because every person has contact with Parama Puruśa on a purely personal level. There is no third existence between them. There are only two – the spiritualist and the Parama Pitá [Cosmic Father]. Spiritualists move towards the Cosmic Father and sit on His lap. To do this is everyone’s birthright. Nobody can be debarred from doing so on the pretext of inferior caste, colour, education or poverty. Since this is everyone’s birthright there cannot be any complex in the arena of spirituality. The defective social order injects an inferiority complex in the mind which often persists even when people enter the spiritual field. They feel that as the Cosmic Father is so great, how can they, being of low caste or poor or uneducated, go to Him? This is called mahimnabodha in the shástras [scriptures]. But one should not forget that the relation of father and child exists. Even if the father is a great scholar, the uneducated child will go to him and ask for whatever he requires because he or she has affection for the father. Just now I said that in the field of spirituality there cannot be any complex, but there are complexes due to social defects. It is our spiritual duty to rectify the social order. If we fail, there may not be good spiritualists. Even those who have the potentiality to become good spiritualists may not progress. They may be like a flower that dies before it blossoms. I cannot allow this to happen. For this reason the theory of Prout has been given so that every person can progress speedily in the field of spirituality without any complex." (12)

Everyone is the child of the Cosmic Father

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In the existential sphere, too, there should not be any complex because everyone is the child of the Cosmic Father. If there is any superiority complex, it should be the common one that one is the child of the Cosmic Father who is so great, so potent. One may only have this superiority complex. Whatever people possess is given by the Cosmic Father and therefore no individual has the right to have a superiority complex. So in the existential sphere there is no reason for any complex to remain. In other words it can be said that there will be a common complex that all are the children of the Cosmic Father, no one being inferior and no one being superior." (13)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Kabir and Mahaprabhu launched open revolts against the casteism which had kept Indian society crippled by creating a tremendous complex of self-aggrandizement in one section of society and a terrible inferiority complex in another section. Although Mahaprabhu had been born into a well-known Brahman family, he suffered many insults because of his opposition to casteism. Despite this he remained steadfast in his ideology." (14)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Now, in this process of spiritual march, march towards the spiritual nave, humanity sometimes for want of proper guidance was depraved, was degenerated, and under such circumstances it suffered from the psychology of sinning, a sinning complex. I told you that you must not say, “Oh, Lord, I am a sinner, I am a sinner,” because it will develop the psychology of sinning. If you are not actually a sinner, you will be a sinner if you say this, if you think this. It is a defective psychic approach. And some people exploited this sinning complex of human beings and created so many differences, so many groups, so many diversities, in this human society which is actually a singular entity." (15)

Good people will stay away from ego

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Ego is the root cause of downfall. If ego is present then downfall is inevitable. How is ego manifested in individual life? It expresses itself through superiority complex. I am great and everyone else is small, degraded, lowly. “I am superior” – this feeling or thought is called “superiority complex” in English and mahámanyatá in Sanskrit. Due to this sense of ego one behaves poorly with others. For this reason it is said in the scriptures: trińádapi suniicena. For example, a blade of grass remains underneath everyone. It has no ego, yet it possesses more qualities than anyone. Human beings should keep themselves aloof in every way from superiority complex and pride. Good people will stay away from ego. Why will they do so? Good people know what are the causes behind the rise of ego. One person has knowledge, another has money. A good person knows that this money and this knowledge is not theirs; it belongs to Parama Puruśa. Today it has come to me and again it will leave me. I had none of these when I was born and at the time of death they won't remain with me. For this reason good people will stay away from ego." (16)

People are prone to various complexes: superiority complex, inferiority complex, fear complex, defeatist complex, sinner's complex, melancholia, phobia, schizophrenia, and shyness etc. Those who do not suffer from any of these are in a balanced state - samatabhava. We should also remember Baba's timeless teaching: To do anything successfully one must have a free mind - a balanced mind. The mind should be free from all complexes.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "To attain complete success in life, the fourth principle is samata'bha'va, that is, mental equipoise, mental balance. There must not be any complex in the mind -- neither superiority complex nor inferiority complex." (17)

Complexes are a psychic disease

Here Baba furthermore points out the negative nature of complexes and He simultaneously directs us to keep samata'bha'va, mental balance.

Baba says, "Complex of any sort - superiority or inferiority - is a psychic malady, a mental disease. You must maintain a psychic balance." (18)

Mental balance is one central target in life. We should aim for this in all circumstances. Once again, we should be vigilant to keep the mind balanced, by His grace. Psychic equipoise is one of the best attributes a person can have.
 
Ananda Marga ideology states, "Maintaining a balanced mind is one of the greatest virtues. There are no complexes in a balanced mind. One neither feels inferior nor superior to others; one never fears anybody nor ever gets perturbed. One maintains a mental balance." (19)

There are so many benefits to having attained mental balance. The mind will be complex-free, enabling people to generate positive relations with one and all. Because when one does not feel that they are better or worse than the next person, then it becomes easy to establish a heart-felt connection. So that is one distinct benefit. In addition, Baba tell us that when one is in a state of psychic equipoise, they will neither be fearful nor full of anxiety. They will remain in a natural state of ease and contentment - not burdened by any negative tendencies of the mind. All these positive outcomes are a tremendous boon for human existence.

When samata'bha'va is lost

In contrast, when due to lack of sadhana we are unable to attain a state of equipoise or if we lose that stance of mental balance, then that invites numerous problems for oneself and for others also. In that case, we are unable to weigh the pros and cons of life and end up making poor decisions - lowering our own position and misleading others as well.

For example, suppose Ram or Shyam prematurely forms an opinion about others, a conclusion which is completely wrong or off-base. Then that invariably leads to problems and harms others. In that case, in the future nobody will want to listen to Ram or Shyam's suggestions or guidelines. Then Ram or Shyam's ability to help others will be severely hampered. Such pitfalls come from a lack of mental balance.That is why Baba warns to stay balanced and not proceed hastily.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya says, "Do not judge anyone to be good or bad hastily, nor express your opinion." (20)

As we can feel, Baba's specific guideline is that with a calm mind - a balanced mind-- we should view all the things in life, otherwise countless problems will crop up. Considering all the angles, it is clear that keeping the mind free from all complexes is one key point because with a balanced mind we can help ourselves and help others. And that is the greatest utilisation of this human life. As long as we are alive this should be our approach. Here following is Baba's dharmic mandate.

How to overcome superiority & inferiority complex

Here Baba supplies us with the special formula for keeping mental balance and not succumbing to any type of superiority complex.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "People must always bear in mind that 'Whatever I have acquired is all by the grace of Parama Purus'a. If He decides that I should not possess wealth [or any other quality etc], He will take it away at any moment He wishes.' So no one should feel pride about anything under any circumstances." (22)

By seeing everything as Baba's fathomless grace then we will not get puffed up with vanity and instead will be able to maintain mental
balance at all times.

In His below teaching Baba teaches us how to keep mental balance and not fall into the depths of an inferiority complex.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "What about the inferiority complex, that makes you think of yourself as inferior to others? You must have noticed that the minds of those who are less educated become a bit diffident: 'We don't have much learning.' Again, those who are poor suffer from a similar diffidence. 'We are so poor, and have no one to turn to.' But what causes such diffidence? [They forget that] everyone on this earth is a child of Parama Purus'a; no one is big or small. All are related as brothers and sisters." (23)

By remembering we are all the beautiful expressions of that Divine Entity Parama Purusa, then no inferiority complex can creep into the mind. Then we will keep our mental balance.

Vanity is very dangerous

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "When samata'bha'va [mental equipoise] is lost, then one begins feeling that there is a group of people far inferior to oneself. Such a pattern is to be observed in the case of people who have come to the city from the village. They say that they don't feel like returning to the village, as the villagers are illiterate and under-developed. This feeling is very dangerous. And if such feelings creep into the mind as a result of having acquired a little intellectual knowledge, the chances of developing this complex are much greater in the realm of spirituality, when a sa'dhaka begins feeling somewhat elevated with the development of some occult powers and the feeling of a little bliss. In the second stage of spiritual practice every sa'dhaka faces this test. One must be very, very cautious, so that vanity may not develop." (24)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "The third fundamental of education is that teachers and students should have a balanced mind." (25)

In His above teaching Baba guides us that mental balance is needed in order to both guide and learn from others.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "In this universe all entities are divine; only people have to realize it. Nobody is helpless or alone in this universe. We have mundane, supramundane and spiritual relationships with the universe. So it is the bounden duty of human beings to expand their mental arena because basically all finite entities have the inherent wont of universal pervasion. Their goal is the Supreme Entity who is free from limitations. Human beings will have to expand themselves so much that they will go beyond the fetters of limitations. There cannot be and should not be an inferiority or superiority complex in anybody. Those who preach individual racial superiority are committing sins. They are going against human dharma." (26)

Conclusion

Psychic diseases hinder one’s ability to progress in individual life and are crippling in collective life. So mental complexes should be addressed and eradicated at all cost. This can be achieved through both auto suggestion, i.e. sadhana, and outer suggestion, cultivating a proper mental outlook.

Serious debate issue resolved

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Parama Puruśa is omnipotent, but...He cannot hate anybody. Whoever comes near Him becomes one with Him. So Parama Puruśa remains a singular entity. Secondly, Parama Puruśa creates everybody in His mind; He cannot hate his own mental creation.” (1)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “You see, everybody in this universe is within Parama Puruśa. He sees everybody within His mind, and because everybody is within His mind, He cannot hate a mental figure of His.” (2)

Note: In His above teaching, Baba guides us that Parama Purusa cannot hate anything or anyone. The reason is that this entire creation is set within His own mind. All the expressions are His. And no one can hate themselves. That is the logic and reason why Parama Purusa cannot hate anyone in spite of His omnipotence.

Namaskar,

It is time to apply the litmus test to see if we and those around us are doing namaskar properly or not.

If you, me, or anyone walks into a room and waits for others to do namaskar, it means they do not know the meaning of this salutation. Because if in their heart and mind anyone understands that namaskar is a salutation to the Supreme, they will be vigilant and ready to quickly do namaskar to anyone they see. Forgetting this point, one will think, "I am a man of respect; let others salute me first." In that case, one will not do namaskar first. That means they have misunderstood the entire essence of namaskar. In such situations, they are merely demonstrating their own disillusionment or ignorance.

You may have seen such situations. If you walk down the hallways these days in Ranchi or Tiljala, so many “big” Dadas never do namaskar to their junior workers. Rather, such Dadas expect that all should respectfully do namaskar to them and in response they may casually wave or nod their head.

When any high posted Dada does like this, then they have degraded themselves by forgetting the divine truth that namaskar is being done to the Supreme, not to them. But instead such Dadas are puffing up their own ego and vanity thinking that the namaskar salutation is a reflection of one's own greatness or social standing. That is the degree of their misunderstanding.

Then if one tours any overseas sector, often we find that those who have become family acaryas fall into this same awful predicament. With their new found title, those family acaryas think all should honour them by doing namaskar first. Again, this is nothing but proof of their own ignorance. Ultimately, whether acarya or not, any arrogant person is prone to degrading themselves in this way by thinking that namaskar is being done to them.

So we should all think, review the situation, and make sure that we are not falling into this trap, nor allowing others to do so. We should know that when doing namaskar we are offering our salutations to the Supreme.

Wrongly think that namaskar is being done to them

At the same time, problems rarely exist in isolation. Most often two people are involved in any wrongdoing. This is the case with the misunderstanding about namaskar - as well. Up till now, we have been primarily discussing the ignorance of the person who is receiving the namaskar salutation. They wrongly think that namaskar is being done to them.

The other side of the scenario is the person who is actually doing namaskar. The proper spirit should be that we are paying our salutations to the Supreme One.

But it sometimes happens - either to us or others - that we are thinking that an important person has entered the room so we should quickly go and do namaskar. Or we may think that, “The person before me is so great that I must be extra careful to show him my respect by doing namaskar very slowly.” Or anytime the thought infests our mind that the salutation within namaskar is being done to the person in front of us, and not Parama Purusa, then the person doing namaskar has also fallen into dogma. That is a sign of one's own ignorance.

Whenever a so-called great person walks into any room waiting for others to do namaskar to them and whenever a person sees a so-called great person and thinks, “I must honour them by doing namaskar”, then in that moment, both parties involved are 100% ignorant. Both are misusing and misunderstanding the namaskar salutation and degrading themselves.

One other scenario is if an aged, or senior, or so-called respected person sees a 5-year-old boy, then they may think, "Why should I do namaskar to this small child." This is also a diseased outlook. We should always remember that Parama Purusa is timeless and ageless and whatever form is standing before us, He resides within all. No one should fall into ignorance by failing to do namaskar in such circumstances.

Conclusion

Parama Purusa has blessed us with one very special type of salutation to recognise His presence in all circumstances and interactions. This is a spiritual boon. So we should always watch ourselves to ensure we are following the word and spirit of His namaskar guidelines. Failing that - should we become at all ignorant in this regard - then that will only lead to our degradation.

Remembering Him is the path of vidya and elevation and forgetting Him is the path of avidya and degradation. When doing or receiving namaskar, we must always bear in mind salutations are being done to Him, and not any unit being.

Why namaskar mudra

Ananda Marga ideology states, "What is our style of extending goodwill? We do, Namaska'r. That is, “I pay respect to the Supreme Entity residing within you.” You should remember this. “I concentrate all the good feelings of my mind here in the trikut'i [between the eyebrows].”

“In your mind there are so many propensities. Propensities are called vrtti in Sanskrit. So there are so many vrttis, so many propensities..."

"So many thoughts are in your mind. But you should concentrate all your thoughts at a particular point, here – that is, with all the strength and goodwill of your mind you are doing this – you are touching these two palms here [trikut'i]. That is, you are concentrating all your goodwill here, because you are paying respect to Parama Purus'a residing within this body...[pointing to different people]. First do this."

"And not only mental concentration, you are human beings, you have got so many sentiments also. Human sentiment, you know? When you feel much joy you burst into tears, when much sorrow you burst into tears. These are sentiments. And human beings are guided by sentiment, more by sentiment than by logic, you must not forget it – more by sentiment than by logic. So your sentiment is also there, so with all the concentration of your mind and with all the sweetness of your sentiment, from the very core of your heart, you are paying respect to Parama Purus'a residing within a human structure. So you do this [palms together at mid-point of chest], and say, Namaska'r."

"I think you have understood it? A very sweet idea. So it is my opinion, my desire, that human society [be] one, indivisible; it is an expressed form, a sweet expression, of Parama Purus'a, to whom you should always pay respect by doing namaska'r." (1)

When namaskar & when namaste

One other dogma floating around the fake and new-age yoga community in the west and in India also is the use of namaste. This is a bit of a separate topic, but in general one should understand that namaskar is to be used with human beings and namaste is only to be used when honouring Parama Purusa directly, not seeing Parama Purusa in the form of some unit being. Our Marga should not fall prey to this dogma. There is an important distinction which can be discussed in greater length. Suffice to say here that we should pay heed to Baba's below guideline.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "The generally-accepted rule is that one should do namaska'ra to a human being or a god or goddess, but one should do namaste or namastubhyam only to Parama Purus'a, not to any other entity." (2)

Role of mudra in namaskar salutation

Baba has also detailed another important quality of the namaskar salutation by clearly telling the importance of the mudra. Sometimes people fail to bring their thumbs to the trikuti point or their palms to their heart. But Baba has given a pointed explanation about this. In brief, bringing the palms to the triktui point helps focus the mind and honour Parama Purusa and when bringing the palms to the heart we offer all our feelings unto Him.

Come secretly

Prabhat Samgiita Intro: This song reflects A-grade bhakti. The sadhaka was intensely involved in meditation and Parama Purusa was present in a close and intimate manner. But then Parama Purusa left the bhakta’s mental plate. In that desperate and painful condition, with deep melancholic longing, the sadhaka is yearning for Parama Purusa to come in an intimate way. Parama Purusa is not gone, only the sadhaka is not getting Him in that deeply intimate and personal way in which he desires to hold Him. From the depths of the bhakta’s heart, this song has emerged. Unfortunately, those who do not have A-grade bhakti for Parama Purusa may not understand this.

“Ámi tomár lágiá jágiá rahechi, satata tomár patha ceye…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0255)

Note: Only those bhaktas who feel a spiritual vibration in their heart can understand this song in the depths of their core.

Purport:

O’ my Parama Purusa, I am remaining awake for You. I am always looking toward Your path, waiting with full anticipation for Your blissful arrival.  By Your grace my mind is in a spiritual flow and I long for You alone. I have prepared the garland for You and arranged everything with the expectation that You will be coming. So please my Dearest, arrive secretly in my mind and become mine alone.

O’ Supreme Friend, why have You tied and bound me with the rope of Your love and affection. Why have You immersed me in my tears of longing for You. My Nearest One, why have You done this? Now I can never forget You. Your image floats across my mental plate always.

Baba, whatever I think, You are always there in the background of my reflection. What a tragedy I have been trapped in? Because of all this, now come secretly and stealthily into my mind, and become my own forever…

What humans should do

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "O human beings, proceed on the path of oṋḿkara towards subtleness. Do not run after the superficial, pleasant mirage dominated by tamoguńa. Establish yourself in sattvaguńa and then merge yourself into Brahma. Reach the point whence oṋḿkára has started. Awaken your latent dynamism through sádhaná and devotion, arouse your divine wisdom and merge that pure divinity into the endless stream of divine glory. Attain the Supreme state for which you have suffered tremendous privations. Today you have the most favourable opportunity to prove yourself as a human being.” (1)

Dire weakness of democracy

Prout philosophy states, “There are occasions when majority decisions do not create unity in society because people are more or less divided on an issue. In such circumstances, the leaders should be very cautious when making their decisions, and take special care to safeguard the interests of everybody. In particular, they should select a course of action which does not harm the sentiments of any group. For example, suppose there are seven brothers in a joint family, and these brothers are divided on an issue. Four brothers may be on one side and three brothers on another. If the head of the family takes a decision based on the wishes of the majority, the family will be divided into two groups. Therefore, a decision should be taken which safeguards the interests of all the brothers.” (1)

Humans have made their own death bed

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Due to the foolishness of human beings many creatures and objects will not survive the period fixed for them by nature. Prior to their stipulated period of longevity they will be swallowed up by eternity. Human beings due to their utmost folly have annihilated numerous objects and thus prepared their own funeral pyre. Such folly on the part of human beings is unbearable. Human beings must be cautious from now on. They must restructure their thoughts, plans and activities in accordance with the dictates of ecology. There is no alternative.” (1)
