High bar of being teacher + 3 more

Baba
High bar of being teacher

Namaskar,

In Baba's system of tantric education, the teacher’s role is absolutely central to student success. The teacher is highly regarded for their skill and responsibility, and thus must be of impeccable character and exemplary conduct. Remember, the students are not there just to learn a particular course of study or given subject material, but to emulate the teacher’s conduct on all levels of life and become great moralists, sadvipras, and tantrikas in society.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Teachers: supreme character & exemplary conduct

Here, below, are a few of Baba's guidelines which clearly state that teachers must fully exemplify their ideal in their day to day living:

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The first and most important factor is to select teachers carefully. Those who have the required academic qualifications do not have an automatic right to become teachers. Teachers must possess such qualities as strength of character, righteousness, sense of social service, unselfishness, an inspiring personality and leadership. They are the preceptors of society, and that is why it is not possible for everyone to do this job." (1)

By Sadguru Baba’s above guidelines, it is evident that in our tantric system teachers must be strict moralists and sterling examples of AM ideals. These are two of the key components to being a proper teacher. So first and foremost is their character. Then of course they must be knowledgeable about the subject material and have the requisite patience, skill, and insight to impart that knowledge to others. But it all starts with having a teacher who is firmly grounded in yama and niyama and committed to spiritual practices.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Worldly qualifications not enough

In our tantric system of education, mundane educational qualifications and certificates alone are not enough to make one a proper teacher. Rather, ideal conduct is the main criterion. This is the foundation of AM philosophy and our tantric cult, and teachers must be living embodiments of those ideals. So if any teacher exhibits any slackness in this regard they must be rectified at the earliest - such slackness will not be tolerated, what to speak of any type of deviant and derelict behaviour like smoking, drinking, eating meat, and sexual dealings. Such gross contraventions of our moral code may be grounds for immediate termination etc. Here below Baba explains the consequences of indisciplined behaviour on the part of teachers.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “There are also teachers who, after discussing the abuses and evils of intoxicants in the classroom, immediately go outside and start smoking. This sets an extremely bad example. If the teachers would just use intoxicants, without saying anything about them, it might not be so bad. But this approach naturally encourages the students to be undisciplined. They will think that the use of such things must be enjoyable, and that their teachers deprive them so that they can enjoy them alone.” (2)

So regardless of whatever worldly qualification a person has, if their conduct is poor, then in our AM society that person will not be granted a glorified position such as that of teacher. They will first have to rectify their conduct. This is a completely unique aspect of our AM system of education etc, whereas in materialistic societies such a standard is miserably lacking as all sorts of debauched people hold positions of great power and respect.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Tantric measuring rod

In our tantric culture, good conduct is the starting point. Without proper conduct, one cannot move even a single step forward on the path of liberation and service to humanity. Anyone who does not have good conduct cannot be regarded or accepted as a teacher of AM spiritual philosophy or social philosophy. Hence, as Ananda Margiis, we have to follow our tantric philosophy and use that measuring rod to analyze each and every circumstance.

Giving the post of AM teacher to any Shyam or Ram, regardless of their character and conduct, will not bode well. What to speak of not enabling our sublime ideology to be taught in the proper way, there will be controversy and scandal. That is why 'A Guide to Human Conduct', the first book of AM, emphasizes that we are to follow good conduct from the very beginning.

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, "It is therefore emphasized that even before commencing sadhana one must follow moral principles strictly. Those who do not follow this should not follow the path of sadhana; otherwise, they will bring about their own harm and that of others." (3)

And Baba warns us that those whose conduct is not good should not be given positions of leadership.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “Those not established in yama-niyama should not get the opportunity to assume leadership.” (4)

Adherence to moral principles is essential for becoming a teacher in our tantric system of education. Those unable to follow those principles should not be given the distinguished role of teacher. Not only will they harm themselves, they will also be the cause of disaster in society. The foundational point is our tantric culture is based on ideal conduct.

Conclusion

Ultimately, by remaining firm in our tantric traditions of ideal conduct, our AM society will certainly rise up, and our teachers of AM spiritual philosophy or social philosophy will truly be the guiding light for the entire humanity.

In Him,
Srs’t’ikarta’

Unfit to become

Sadly, there are several examples in our AM society where some so-called learned people were given the elevated status of teacher, yet they were clearly unfit for the post due to: (a) extramarital affairs / sexual misconduct; (b) thievery; (c) bribery; (d) debauched habits of any sort etc. In all those cases, there was a horrible fallout.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

So educational qualifications and book knowledge of AM philosophy alone are not sufficient. If in their personal lives, they have any black spot or weakness - or are following a degraded lifestyle - they cannot be a teacher. Indeed, those not of proper character can never lead humanity and should not be allowed to become teachers, as they will ruin themselves and drag society into the depths of darkness.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "Those who proceed to build a benevolent society, without having undergone meticulous self-preparation and self-discipline themselves, will bring about not only their own downfall but they will lead the whole of humanity to disaster as well. They will be incapable of implicitly trusting the very people for whom they are to work. At the outset they may exert a little to attain for themselves some requisite qualifications of leadership...[but] their work is doomed to failure in the end if they lack sadhana or spiritual practice." Psychology of abandoning one group & joining another

This below quote is for those Hindus who got frustrated with Hinduism and joined Islam, or any margii / WT who left one group and joined another. To save themselves from jackals, they jumped into the fire. Best is to be a neo-humanist and leave all forms of groupism.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Due to the many shortcomings in one religion and its exploitation of so-called lower caste people, many of these so-called low caste people left that religion and accepted another. When people leave their religion for no significant reason and accept another religion which suffers from ideological vacuum or is even inferior to the religion which they previously followed, they develop hysterical behaviour. They start excessively doing those things which were once prohibited to them by their previous religion. So we find that the person who has converted to another religion takes more beef than a normal member of that religion. This type of behaviour cannot be found in those who had ideologically accepted that religion.” (1)

Why violence in Islam

In the following teaching, Sadguru Baba is indirectly talking about Islam where music, dance, drama and all such forms of artistic expression are not allowed. Due to the prohibition of music etc, strict Islamic followers become severely psychically diseased and ultimately very brutal and cruel. They become absolutely ruthless. So, we should take a lesson from this and encourage aesthetic science wherever we get the opportunity. In result, the finer human senses of love and compassion will develop for fellow human beings, and violence in the society will wane and be completely eradicated. This terror torn earth will become loving, compassionate, and caring.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Humanity, in its all-out quest for this aesthetic science, attained spirituality. One must acknowledge this. Herein lies the excellence of aesthetic science. For this reason, I have given my whole-hearted and explicit support for nandana vijiṋána. You know that there are certain religions [Islam etc] which do not encourage aesthetic pursuits. You will notice that in those religions inertia, inferiority complexes and a sense of violence are predominant.” (1)

Some think that Islam includes those sufis who sing, dance, and play musical instruments, but that is wrong. In the Quran Sharif, songs are forbidden. And strict Islamists treat Sufis as heretics.

Story: harassing sadhaka & repercussion + 3 more

Baba
Story: harassing sadhaka & repercussion

Namaskar,

Ananda Marga ideology states, “When in the course of sadhana one attains the state of yatamána, then obstacles appear from all sides. Family members create obstructions. The environment creates obstructions” (1)

Shrii Umashankarji was initiated just prior to the 1970 Ananda Purnima DMC in Muzaffarpur, and he became regular and deeply involved in sadhana right away, by Baba's grace. At the same time, Umashankarji's laokik father was a very dogmatic person who was completely against Ananda Marga and sadhana.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How his father would torture him

His father would engage in various mean-minded schemes in order to harass and abuse Umashankarji when he was practicing meditation. Sometimes he would blast the radio next to his ear, other times he would throw pots of cold water on him, and one time he even dumped a big bowl of hot vegetable soup on Umashankarji while he was doing sadhana. Plus, his father would verbally accost him too - taunting and threatening him, and calling him names. He did not like that his son joined Ananda Marga, did sadhana, and had forsaken his sacred thread and hair.

In response, to escape his father's unruly wrath, Umashankarji would try and find quiet, lonely places so he could do his sadhana in peace. But always, his father would stalk him and torment him. This mistreatment took a big toll on Umashankarji. He could not take it anymore, and he was wondering how he could possibly survive in that house any longer and continue to do sadhana and remain an Ananda Margii. Umashankarji was even suffering from tortuous nightmares. His acarya told him to do more sadhana before going to sleep as that would help cure the nightmares.

One night while he was doing sadhana before sleep, his father threw an entire bucket of water on him - soaking his bedding as well. His father furthermore warned him that he must not leave the family tradition of maintaining his caste and doing idol worship. By this point, Shrii Umashankarji was feeling very frustrated and depressed. He did not want to give up Ananda Marga sadhana and he was facing a lot of opposition. He could not bear it any longer. Umashankarji felt he had no other recourse than to go and tell Baba. He had a strong desire to recount to Baba all the treacherous things that his laokik father was doing.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Unusual way he met Baba on fieldwalk

Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Baba would be coming to Muzaffarpur for DMC. Umashankarji planned to tell Baba everything. As soon as Baba arrived, Umashankarji approached one of Baba's bodyguards and expressed his desire to go on fieldwalk with Baba. The security chief told him that he must get permission from PA Dada, then he would be able to accompany Baba on fieldwalk, otherwise not. When Umashankarji inquired with PA, then PA told him, "No, already there are so many requests. You will have to go in the future - not now."

At that point, Umashankarji was feeling desperate. He knew he had to do something. After making various inquiries, he found out where Baba would be going for His fieldwalk. It was a remote area far away from the DMC grounds. Umashankarji had to take a bus and travel on foot to get there. Once he got to the location, he stood in the field and waited for Baba to arrive.

After some time, Baba embarked on His fieldwalk, along with His entourage - i.e. a few margiis and security personnel. They had walked for a while when off in the distance, they saw a lone figure - standing there with folded-hands. Baba asked PA Dada who was out there in the field. PA called for the person to come closer. As the lone figure got nearer, Baba said, "Oh, Umashankar, it is you - what is the problem?"

Umashankarji replied, "Baba, You know everything. I have a big problem: Remaining an Ananda Margii, doing sadhana, and staying in my house is impossible. My laokik father is harassing me - it is too much. You have to do something. I want that he should be removed from this world."

Baba scolded Umashankar, "Shame, shame, why are you thinking like this. Never think or wish ill upon others.”

Immediately, Umashankarji realised his mistake and repented.

Baba continued, “Tell your father that if he continues to torment you then you will leave the house and live in an Ananda Marga jagrti. Then your father will not harass you anymore. If still he continues to harass you, then do not worry. As a margii, you must not think ill of your father."

At that point, Shrii Umashankar felt very peaceful, by Baba's grace, and from that moment forward, he did not harbour any ill will towards his laokik father.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

I will leave & live in Ananda Marga ashram

When Umashankarji returned home from DMC, he approached his father. With a clear voice and benevolent heart, he said, "If you continue to harass me while I am doing meditation, then I have no option but to leave this house and go live in an Ananda Marga ashram. This is my Guru's mandate."

Umashankarji had full faith in Baba on this matter. His father thought he was bluffing and that Umashankarji would never leave.

His father yelled, "Go anywhere you like, but do not do sadhana in my house. If I see you doing meditation there will be trouble. You must leave Ananda Marga and follow our family traditions. Then you can stay, otherwise go where you wish."

Hearing his father's harsh reply, Umashankarji still held hope in his heart that his father might be rectified. However, his father continued to harass and abuse the innocent and spiritually-minded Umashankarji. The very next Sunday, 7 days later, Shrii Umashankar's father died of a massive heart-attack. He could not mend his ways so nature did not spare him.

What we can learn from this story

1st Teaching: As a sadhaka, as an Ananda Margii, one should never think of harming or hurting others. Baba never wants us to think in such an ugly and depraved manner. Asking Parama Purusa to harm others is static bhakti or aparabhakti.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

2nd Teaching: If you are involved in dharmic work and someone continually disturbs and harasses you, then nature will not tolerate it. And that is what happened with Umashankar’s father. He had to face the wrath of prakrti for his misdeeds and gross transgressions of bhagavad dharma.

3rd Teaching: If you are adhering to that path of dharma, then do not be intimidated or cowed down by any type of harassment or abuse.

Bound to be destroyed

Ananda Marga ideology states, “Whatever humans do in consistence with the dictates of dharma will ensure their well-being, their victory, their prosperity. And whoever goes against these ingrained human characteristics, against these dharma-orientated characteristics, will be doomed to destruction. For human beings, ideation on Parama Puruśa is a dharmic injunction. By divine decree everyone has the right to live in the world with dignity. If anyone creates any obstacle against this dharma-oriented system, if they oppose it, they are bound to be destroyed.” (2)

Ananda Marga ideology states, “You have learnt a well-ordered system of meditation and other spiritual practices based on dharma. If any individuals or groups, however powerful they may be, try to suppress you or even succeed in suppressing you, they are bound to be destroyed. History has witnessed many such a downfall in the past. No one has ever been victorious or will ever be victorious by opposing dharma. March ahead with your own strength, march with firm steps and your head held high. Always remember that when dharma is with you, whoever will oppose you will be razed to the ground – their destruction is a must.” (3)

Conclusion

When following dharma then there is no need to wish ill upon your enemies. They will be raised to dust automatically. And that is exactly what happened with Umashankar’s father. He was viciously harassing his son and in the end he met his demise. In this way, Umashankar’s path of forward movement was made clear.

Namaskar,
Sastaunga Pranam to Baba,
Gunmayii

Why yatamana

When a sadhaka comes on the path of sadhana then in the first stage serious obstacles come from the outside - i.e. from friends, relatives, father, mother, neighbours, the external world etc. That beginning stage is yatamana; so Umashankar was in the stage of yatamana. When one proceeds ahead, those external obstacles accept their defeat and run away. Then one’s parents etc do not create problems. In the second stage, vyatireka, internal problems come - various vrttis (i.e. psychi propensities) of the mind harass sadhakas. Then those mental inclinations also get defeated. In the third stage, ekendriya, the sadhaka gains mental powers and is enticed; and he misuses those powers. Then in the final stage, vashiikára, there are no obstacles. This is an extremely short summary of the various stages of sadhana.

Shrii Umashankar of Muzaffarpur was a very senior and respected margii. All along, Umashankarji was an extremely dedicated margii. Even during emergency when others were hiding, he was quite active and vocal, carrying the banner of Ananda Marga. And he continued to be vigilant in following Ananda Marga ideals and participating in Ananda Marga social life. Many know of his bhaktial heart and dharmic spirit. He always wanted to please Baba, so in spite of his obesity Umashankarji would dance tandava in front of everyone to make Baba laugh. Many may recall this jovial scene.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “Yatamána: The microcosm wants to move forward. There are so many obstacles, so many mundane bondages, both external and internal. As you know, these internal bondages are known as ripus [enemies] and the external fetters are known as páshas [bondages]. One will have to look forward, [fighting] these internal and external bondages. [All those bondages on] the unit cognition are of baser nature. When a microcosm wants to move a step forward, so many inimical entities assemble and try to defeat that microcosm. So sádhaná requires a sort of fight, rather it is a fight, against all the [degenerating agencies]. In this first stage, the microcosm tries its best to fight against these internal and external enemies and tries to move forward. This stage is known as yatamána.” (4)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Devotees have no malice against anybody. Why should there be malice against anybody? While a great spiritualist was eating cooked rice, a hungry dog came and sat on his lap. The dog, too, started eating with him. When both were eating together an intellectual came and said, `Fie, fie, the dog is a filthy animal and yet you are eating with him from the same plate. What kind of person are you? You are untouchable'. The devotee replied, `I am Vis'n'u, this dog is Vis'n'u. Why then do you laugh at me? The whole universe is pervaded by Vis'n'u. Your abuses and praises are all the same to me. I love flowers and thorns equally.' Only a devotee can speak like this."  (5)

Ananda Vanii states, '"All the beings of this universe are the kith and kin of one another. No one is despicable. All are equally respectable and entitled to equal love and affection..." (6)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Even if one does not harm anyone physically, but simply thinks of harming someone, sam'ska'ras will still be created. Whatever feelings one may have for a person, good or bad, will certainly cause a reaction.  That reaction will remain in potential form in the subtle mental sphere until the opportune time arrives for its expression. This is why wise people look upon this universe with an attitude of equanimity and pray for the welfare of all. Sarvesa'm maungalam ka'unks'e. People who fail to do this will have to suffer endlessly for their mean-mindedness." (7)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Ours is a universal family. Each and every entity -- living and non-living, moving and non-moving -- helps others in maintaining not only their equilibrium, but also the equipoise of the entire universe, not only of this small planet Earth. We are to move together with all." (8)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "In static bhakti, the bhakta says, “O my Lord, I am your bhakta. Mr. Y is my enemy. Please destroy Him.” In the case of static bhakti, the bhakta doesn't want to be with the Lord. The bhakta wants something bad or harsh done to his or her enemy. That is bhakti of the worst type. As it was not the person's longing to become one with the Father, that person never will become united with the Father. And also, the Supreme Father is the Supreme Father of the enemy also. So He may or may not kill that enemy. Static bhakti is no bhakti." (9)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “What is static bhakti? You say: “O Lord, O Náráyańa, Mr. X is my enemy. Please kill him.” [laughter] It will not be possible for a man to get Náráyańa by this type of bhakti. Why? His longing was to kill Mr. X and not to get Náráyańa. So Náráyańa may or may not grant his request, may or may not kill Mr. X, but because his desire was not to get Náráyańa, it is sure that he won't get Náráyańa." (10)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "According to the degree of their bhakti human beings decide what to ask from Parama Puruśa. If their bhakti is motivated by too much selfishness, what will they ask? They will say internally to Parama Puruśa, “Well, Mr. So-and-so is harassing me, my tenant refuses to vacate my house, and Mr. Such-and-such is my sworn enemy; so, O Lord, please let them go to hell. Finish them off for good.” Now, if one prays in this way, “O Lord, Mr. So-and-so is my sworn enemy, so please let him go to hell,” the Lord will have to act intelligently, because that man's enemy will also say, “O Náráyańa, let my enemy go to hell.” So Náráyańa will be in a fix. Whom should He protect, whom should He please? He has to handle both sides." (11)

Ananda Marga ideology states, "Those who curtail other people's rights oppose the divine providential law, thus inviting trouble for themselves." (12)

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "There are three classifications within aparábhakti. When a so-called bhakta (aparábhakti means they are not devotees, they are so-called devotees) says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta,” and then says, “X is my enemy. Please kill him, please kill him!” this type of bhakti is called támasika bhakti. Actually it is not bhakti. When someone says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta, but You know, I am not getting any employment, please arrange for my employment,” he is not trying to harm anybody, but he wants physical development or physical elevation, his [physical] betterment. His bhakti, his so-called bhakti, is known as rájasika bhakti. And that is also aparábhakti, and aparábhakti is not bhakti. And suppose someone says, “O Parama Puruśa, I am Your bhakta, and You know, I want mukti, I want mukti,” and Parama Puruśa asks, “O my boy, why do you want mukti?” “Oh, I don't find any charm in this world, because I lost my digestive power. Either give me back my digestive power or give me mukti.” This is sáttvikii bhakti. Actually sáttvikii bhakti is not bhakti; aparábhakti is not at all bhakti." (13)

Plagiary?

It is the accepted international standard and Baba's system not to copy another's work and publish it in your own way. Baba has given a very strict rule on plagiarism. Why is Baba against plagiarism or stealing someone's work? There are many reasons:

1) It is against the code of asteya (non-stealing).

2) Countless stories of bhaktas need to be published. But some do not want to do the hard work of compiling and writing these stories, so they just steal them from others. But new stories need to be told, otherwise so many unpublished stories of sadhakas will be lost and forgotten forever. So watch out for story thieves, and kindly help them not to steal by posting on social media in their own way. If you want to forward this story then attach the following yellow section with the story:

“Courtesy of unknown bhakta via Ananda Marga Universal (https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/)”

This will be treated as the standard protocol.

Cast away net of attachment

“Niiviŕa nishiitha sheśe, aruńa prabhát hese, elo, elo, elo re…” (Prabhat Samgiita #1846)

Purport:

At the end of the deep dark night, the crimson dawn is smiling. A new day is born: He has come, He has come, He has come. After prolonged tapasyá, the cimmerian darkness has been removed. In this moment, the skyscape has become vibrant and colourful. He has come, He has come, He has come.

Now, there is no more fear or catastrophe. No longer are there attempts to create distinctions and divisions amongst human beings. Today, moving ahead is the only work. With the decoration of light, the beautiful sun of the dawn has captivated my mind. He has come, He has come, He has come.

O’ bandhu, o’ my friends, do not sleep anymore - arise, awake. Open your eyes and look. Cast away that net of attachment to those old outdated ideas. Embrace the universal bond of neo-humanism. In bringing all together and pouring the sweetness of affection, the unknown Parama Purusa has come into our grasp today. He has come, He has come, He has come today…

Throwing those burkas and veils aside

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “A handful of unprincipled, power-hungry men propagated these [religious] doctrines in order to paralyse women’s reasoning, and to inflate men’s vanity. This doctrine is against nature and we have only to look out into this wide world to find numerous proofs against it. Can anybody drape a burka over a tigress? Is there anyone with enough courage to do it? Can anyone dictate to a tigress, “You cannot cross this boundary,” or “You cannot take part in games and sports, for this is prohibited to women”? Those who propagated these doctrines were not only unprincipled, they were also well aware of the inherent loopholes in their arguments. That is why they did not propagate their ideas directly in their own name. On the contrary, they propagated all those ideas in the name of God. They proclaimed them as the gospels of God; no one shall dispute it; one has to accept it without a murmur. When women will develop a sense of self-respect and be like other spirited creatures, they will cast aside the burkas and veils of servitude. They will then be enabled to expand their role in serving society in a balanced and consolidated way.” (1)

Cakras of AM + 5 more

Baba
Cakras of AM

Namaskar,

Knowing all aspects of Ananda Marga philosophy serves a dual purpose: (a) it fuels our own progress along the path of spirituality, and (b) we can teach and guide others about dharma. So we should be thoroughly familiar with all the major and minor terms used in our Ananda Marga philosophy, including the term "cakra / chakra”.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How cakra is used in AM

In Ananda Marga philosophy, the term "cakra / chakra" is used in a multitude of ways which differ greatly from the approach of traditional Indian literature as well as the fake yoga movement in the west. On its own, the term “cakra” has three basic meanings: (1) wheel, or cycle, or circle; (2) society, samaj, ghosti, or family; and, (3) psycho-spiritual energy center.

In addition, here are some of the ways the term cakra is used across Ananda Marga philosophy:
  • (1) dharmacakra
  • (2) brahmacakra
  • (3) saora cakra
  • (4) párthiva cakra
  • (5) páramáńavik cakra
  • (6) srsti cakra
  • (7) karmacakra
  • (8) bhacakra
  • (9) samája cakra
  • (10) sudarshana cakra
  • (11) bhaeravii cakra
  • (12) janma marana cakra
  • (13) dharmamahacakra, i.e. DMC
  • (14) kálacakra
  • (15 - 23) the nine cakras as in psycho-spiritual energy centers: (15) muládhára cakra, (16) svadhisthana cakra, (17) manipura cakra, (18) anahata cakra, (19) vishuddha cakra, (20) lalaná cakra, (21) ajina cakra, (22)  Guru cakra, and (23) sahasrára cakra (above the cranium).

Knowing all these terms and applications offers a more comprehensive knowledge of the term cakra.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

#1: Dharmacakra

In Ananda Marga, the term dharmacakra is widely known and part of Sixteen Points. Dharmacakra refers to our weekly, collective meditation gatherings.

Although the term is quite common in Ananda Marga, we should not think that it only applies to our gatherings. The term stems back to Buddha's era.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "That special mudra' of Buddha is called dharmacakra pravarttana mudra'. To those first five people who heard his preaching, he said, “Always keep the wheel of dharma moving. Take care that it never ceases to move.”" (1)

The actual term dharmacakra is at least 2500 years old, though the way Buddha used the term is different from our use in Ananda Marga.

#2: Brahmacakra

The term brahmacakra is also quite well known to those familiar with Ananda Marga philosophy. Brahmacakra refers to the system wherein jiivas and inanimate objects move around the Cosmic Nucleus. Those who are psycho-spiritually closer to Him have a shorter radius. Yet regardless of near or far, all are moving around Him - no one is outside of this system. Here is how Sadguru Baba describes this in His discourses.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, "“Sarva'jiive sarvasam'sthe brhante.” His created beings, His loving sons and daughters, His children, are moving round Him. They cannot get themselves detached from Him because He is the Supreme Nucleus and others are just like electrons moving round the nucleus. So Purus'ottama, Parama Purus'a, the Supreme Father, the Supreme Progenitor, is in the centre, and the others are moving and dancing round Him. They move along with their different psychic and physical pabula." (2)

Just as all the planets of this solar system (saora cakra - see below) move around the sun, all the created beings revolve around Parama Purusa. So long as one feels separate from Him, then they are revolving around Him. Those clouded by maya are far and those sadhakas focused on Him are near. It all depends upon one's samskara and spiritual practices. When a sadhaka feels that, "I and Parama Purusa are the same", then they are very close. And when any semblance of “I-ness” disappears, the jiiva becomes one with Him. This is His divine krpa. In a nutshell, this is our system of brahmacakra.

#3 - #5: Saora cakra, Párthiva cakra, & Páramáńavik cakra

(3) Saora cakra is the solar system wherein all the various planets / celestial bodies revolve around the sun.

(4) Párthiva cakra is the earth’s system wherein the moon revolves around the earth.

Ananda Marga ideology states, “The same system is followed by the earth also. Here in this ethereal system we see that in the middle is the earth, and the moon is moving around that nucleus. It is the same system. This one may be called párthiva cakra.” (3)

(5) Páramáńavik cakra is the atomic system.

“The smallest article that can be seen by the human intellect, if not by human eyes, is the atom. And in the atom also there is a particular system, the atomic system, and the centre, that is, the nucleus, has electrons moving round that nucleus. This is the atomic system. These systems are called cakras in Sanskrit. So for this atomic system the Sanskrit name should be páramáńavik cakra.” (4)

#6: Srsti cakra

Srsti cakra literally means the "cycle of creation". When using this term, Baba is describing how creation came into existence. In His discourses published in "Idea and Ideology" and "Elementary Philosophy", Baba explains how the triangle of forces, the five elements, jadasphota, the creation of mind, and the creation emerged from Nirgun'a Brahma. Srsti cakra is a very complex and technical discussion of how the manifested universe took expression out of Cosmic Mind.

#7: Karma cakra

The next usage of the term cakra in Ananda Marga is karma cakra. This term is used less frequently. It refers to the law of karma or cycle of karma or the cycle of action and reaction. In brief, there is the original action (karma or kriya), and the ensuing reactive momenta (samskara), followed by the fruit of the action (karmaphala, or phalabhoga). This is the endless cycle that keeps jiivas bound in this manifested cosmos, returning again and again, life after life.

Karma cakra refers to the totality of this endless cycle. The jiivatma keeps revolving through this cycle birth after birth. So long as one is bound by their actions they cannot attain salvation. In any number of discourses Baba describes in depth the principles of samskara theory, or karma cakra.

#8: Bhacakra

Next is bha-cakra. In a few English discourses this is referred to as the spatio-eternal system. But that is not the essence of the term. The real meaning of the term bhacakra is given in Laghu Nirukta (Ananda Marga small encyclopedia). That is as follows:

1. The sky and space which can be seen from one side of the earth represents only half or a partial amount. To see the other half one has to go to the other side of the earth. And when the entire thing is treated as one, then that is bhacakra. Bhacakra is complete.

2. The next definition means the known and unknown created worlds-- that combined is bhacakra.
Often people think that when they are looking up at the sky they can see the entirety. But actually there is another part of the sky which is out of view. When both the seen and unseen skies are taken together as the complete whole, then that is bhacakra, or the entire universe. So that is yet another cakra in our Ananda Marga ideology.

#9: Sama’ja cakra

The samája cakra refers to the social cycle which is an essential component of Prout philosophy.

Prout philosophy guides us, “The samája cakra [social cycle] moves on. After the Shúdra Age [the age of labour workers] comes the age of warriors – that is, the Kśatriya Age [martial-minded people]; next comes the Vipra Age [the age of intellectuals]; then the Vaeshya Age [the age of tycoons]; and then, after shúdra revolution, in the second parikránti [complete evolutionary rotation] of the social cycle, comes a new Kśatriya Age – the age of the kśatriyas [martial-minded people] who led the shúdra revolution. The social cycle moves on in this manner.” (5)

#10: Sudarshana cakra

The sudharshana cakra is Lord Krsna’s special weapon.

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “You know what happened at the time of Jayadratha’s death. Arjuna, as per his vow, was supposed to go to the funeral pyre immediately after sunset in order to keep his promise. Suddenly people observed that the sun was no longer in the sky and that it had become dark all around. Everyone thought that the sun had already set. Those who were devotees, not philosophers, commented that Lord Krśńa had covered the sun with His Sudarshana Cakra [His special discus].” (6)

#11: Bhaeravii cakra

The bhaeravii cakra is a special tantrika symbol.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The kálacakrayánii and Maháyánii schools used to worship Káli in the Bhaeravii Cakra. Later this kálacakrayána got lost in the wave of vajrayána.” (7)

In Ananda Marga, viiracarii sadhakas do their night sadhana sitting in bhaeravii cakra.

#12: Janma-maran’a cakra

Janma marana cakra is the endless cycle of birth and death.

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, “In the spiritual sphere, when one reaches that vindu one no longer takes rebirth – the cycle of birth and death stops and the aspirant no longer has to return to this world. In váráńasii there is no rebirth. It should be understood that this váráńasii does not refer to a particular city of Uttar Pradesh in India but to a point situated between the ájiṋá and sahasrára cakras, that is, between the pituitary and pineal gland.” (8)

#13: Dharmamahacakra (DMC)

Dharma mahácakra is a spiritual congregation held only in the physical presence of the Márga Guru, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji.

Ananda Marga Caryacarya states, “The dharmacakra which is held on a large scale on special occasions will be called dharma mahácakra.” (9)

#14: Kálacakra

Kálacakra refers to the measurement of the passage of time.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga philosophy guides us, “When some wave of expression emanates from the Universal Hub and moves in the process of systalsis, two main forces are active, Prajiṋátattva [the Cognitive Force] and Shaktitattva [the Operative Force]. The former is called Citishakti, and the latter is called Káliká Shakti. It is called Káliká Shakti because the Operative Force maintains Her creation through kálacakra, the eternal time factor. (This has nothing to do with the deity Kálii.)” (10)

#15 - #23: Nine cakras of the human body

The final application of the term cakra refers to the psycho-spiritual energy centers in the body, where two nadiis cross the susmna canal.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The first thing is that this kulakun'd'alinii rises slowly from the mu'la'dha'ra cakra to the sahasra'ra cakra in eight steps, it passes through eight cakras, and the sahasra'ra cakra is the ninth. Just below the sahasra'ra cakra is the guru cakra." (9)

Ananda Marga philosophy says, “There are nine cakras [plexi] in human organisms [mu'la'dha'ra, sva'dhis't'ha'na, man'ipura, ana'hata, vishuddha, lalaná [tip of the nose], a'jin'a', Guru, and sahasra'ra]." (12)

Use of cakra in Prabhat Samgiita

In Prabhat Samgiita #4072, there is a line: nava cakra kii kalyan'. Here the bhakta is saying that by His grace the mind is vibrated and the petals of the nine cakras are blooming so he is requesting Parama Purusa to, “Please come and sit on my nine cakras.” By all this, we can understand that there are nine cakras. Other aspects to know about this topic are that Guru cakra is at the base or seed of the sahasrara cakra”. Guru cakra is also referred to as Varanasi in the discourse, "Where is Varanasi?".

All this is important because our system of sadhana is a methodical process and one needs proper understanding to progress. So all the supportive knowledge and practices of sadhana are necessary to create that intense longing for Parama Purusa. For this reason, Baba has given us various lessons of sadhana and delivered thousands of spiritual discourses. With that knowledge and practice, a sadhaka can gain one-pointed bhakti for Him.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "To attain Parama Purus'a, to become one with the Supreme Reality, He must be made the summum bonum of human life. But the attainment of the Supreme Reality is not possible overnight. For that the sa'dhaka [spiritual practitioner] will have to undergo the systematic and methodical process of spiritual sa'dhana' for a long period, till every nerve-cell, nerve-fibre, every bit of his physical existence is divinized. Sa'dhana', after all, is a scientific process by which the entire psycho-physical existence is divinized." (13)

Conclusion

Baba has blessed us with a complete philosophy that gives unparalleled insight into the path of spirituality as well as the universe around us. We should study and assimilate the meaning of all the terms Baba uses, such as cakra. Then we will be in the best position to do pracara and get self-realisation, by His grace. Then we will best be able to serve and please Him.

Frog analogy

In the general society, people commonly associate their existence with something narrow like race, religion, locale, region, occupation, level of education, sickness or disease, or money etc. These are some of the the small-minded ways that people classify themselves. And this leads to a certain type of identity problem. They think, “I am white”, or “I am black”, or “I am a brahmin”, or “I am a Christian”, or “I am a CEO” etc. When in reality they are part of something much larger than that.

Their limitation of thought is no different than a frog who lives in one pond and thinks that this pond is the whole universe in which they live. When in fact that frog is part of something much, much bigger, and far more grand. But with its limited outlook the frog cannot realise this. Same then is the case of jiivas who merely associate themselves with some type of clannish identity.

So when an aspirant becomes aware of brahmacakra as well as what it means, then automatically it changes their entire outlook. Then they are no longer small-minded, then they are no longer far. Because by definition they are forced to think that, "I am a jiivatma connected to the great Parama Purusa so I have a link with my Divine Father."
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

How brahmacakra changes one’s outlook

In that case, one no longer associates themselves with a small part of this cosmos or with a limited group. Rather they think they are part of the greater whole. This clears up all kinds of misconceptions and automatically expands one's psychic outlook. By understanding brahmacakra, one knows that Parama Purusa is the essence of life, then one knows all that is necessary to know. The sadhaka has a mental road map of where they need to go. So just being aware about brahmacakra is a big boon to one's progress, both mentally and spiritually.

In contrast those unaware about brahmacakra are drowned in maya and get caught up in all kinds of feuds, abuse, deception, wrongs, and injustices because they are identifying themselves with something small and view others as being opponents, different, or outside of their world. Understanding practically what brahmacakra entails is enough to change one's whole mental structure and push one towards their cherished Goal.

Brahmacakra

Furthermore, in His discourses, Baba describes how all the jiivas (living and nonliving entities) are moving around Parama Purusa. In that case, He is referring to brahmacakra, and employing the shloka: “Sarva'jiive sarvasam'sthe brhante.” While explaining how each expression of creation is connected with God and moving around Parama Purusa at various distances, Baba uses the term brahmacakra. To reduce the radius, one is to perform sadhana. In this system, the nucleus is Brahma and the created beings constantly revolve around Him just as the planets revolve around the sun.

Keep me along with You

"A'mi ga'n geye ja'i, mor kon sampa'da na'i..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3610)

Purport:

Baba, by Your grace, I am singing the song for You. I do not have anything, quality or value other than this - nor any capital or virtues. Just I am completely dependent upon Your karuna' and krpa'. My future is entirely in Your hand. Whether You allow me to remain close or push me away, it is up to You. But this much I know, that I am Yours. It is Your mercy. I go on repeating Your name.

Baba, You have given me an intense urge and the gift of voice which I am using for chanting Your glory. You have blessed with me a heart that is full of yearning, love, and the sweet nectar of prema for You. Having all these things, again and again I beseech You and surrender my whole existence at Your lotus feet. I am singing this spiritual song to express my feeling. Please grace me and keep me along with You.

Baba, I am a tiny atom within You and a dust particle at Your lotus feet. You remain eternally in that Gokul state of consciousness and continue playing Your sweet, melodious flute incessantly. I hear Your enchanting tune in the depths of my heart, and by the pull of the infinite I am drawn beyond all limitations. It is Your grace...

Understanding surrender theory

Some think surrender means doing nothing and depending on God. How far is this correct?

Answer: It is not correct. In the following teaching Baba has given the explanation.

"Párthasárathi says, Má karmaphalaheturbhúmá te saungostvakarmańi [“You must not do actions that will bind you, but you must not be averse to action, either”]. Do your duty, your karma. Now, is this karma in conformity with prapatti or is it antagonistic to prapatti? The teachings of Vraja Krśńa are clearly consistent with prapatti. His existence, His actions, the music of His flute, the way in which He attracts people and gives them shelter – all these are in perfect harmony with prapatti, because an individual feels free after surrendering everything to the Macrocosmic Entity. Here Párthasárathi says, “Do your karma, for you have an inalienable right to your karma.” Karma is defined as Karma Brahmeti karma bahu kurviita – “You are human. Simply look upon karma as a veritable expression of Brahma [Supreme Entity] and do as much karma as you can.”
"Is this in agreement with prapatti or at variance with prapatti? It seems to be opposed to prapatti but in actuality it is not. If we go deeper into the subject, we see that this quinquelemental body, this body of flesh and bones, this mind made of ectoplasmic stuff, this reflecting plate that acts as the witnessing entity (known as átman or puruśa in philosophy) – all these have their origin in Parama Puruśa. It is the Cosmic desire that is the source of the creation of the human body, mind and soul. If we utilize this body, mind and jiivátmá [soul, self, unit consciousness], we are only following the path of prapatti. That is, we are utilizing the things given to us by Parama Puruśa. All these things, the body, mind and self, are His gifts. Had He willed otherwise, they would not have existed. Without Cosmic desire, nothing can exist, nothing can move, not even a blade of grass. So in accordance with the spirit of prapatti, that the body is a machine, we can say that He has been kind enough to provide the body and mind, to be utilized for work only. Hence I follow the spirit of prapatti in using them."
"In the beginning, karma seemed to be against prapatti, but karma is not antithetical to prapatti. It is definitely in conformity with prapatti. So a boy or a girl who does work is surely following the path of prapatti. Even if there is any room for indolence while enjoying the flute of Vraja Krśńa, there is not the least room for inaction in the clarion call of the karma yoga of Párthasárathi Krśńa." (1)

Digging own grave

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Due to the foolishness of human beings many creatures and objects will not survive the period fixed for them by nature. Prior to their stipulated period of longevity they will be swallowed up by eternity. Human beings due to their utmost folly have annihilated numerous objects and thus prepared their own funeral pyre. Such folly on the part of human beings is unbearable. Human beings must be cautious from now on. They must restructure their thoughts, plans and activities in accordance with the dictates of ecology. There is no alternative.” (1)

Do not stray even a step away

Ananda Marga ideology states, "You exist in a vast, limitless ocean of rasa or essences. A never-ending, radiant wave of manifestations is surging within and without you and radiating through all the ten directions – the indescribable vibrational expressions of small and great, accented and unaccented, eternally flowing thought-waves. Behave properly and reasonably with every expression, with every manifestation of the Cosmic mind. But always remember the One, Who is the essence of all these diverse vibrational manifestations. Train yourselves in the ideal of the lily, which blossoms in the mud and has to keep itself engaged in the struggle for existence day in and day out, parrying, bracing and fighting the shocks of muddy water and the force of storms and squalls and various other vicissitudes of fortune; and yet it does not forget the moon above. It keeps its love for the moon constantly alive. It seems but a most ordinary flower: there is nothing extraordinary about it. Yet, this most ordinary little flower has a romantic tie with the great moon. It has focused all its desires on the moon. Similarly, perhaps you are an ordinary creature – perhaps you have to pass your days in the ups and downs of worldly existence – yet do not forget that Supreme One. Keep all your desires inclined towards Him. Always keep yourself merged in His thought. Go deep into the mood of that Infinite Love. By this your worldly activities will not be hampered in any way."

Kumud candramá dúrete rahiyá yemati rákhaye priiti,
Temati Shrii Rádhá kánu páne cáhi grha káj kare niti.

Ananda Marga ideology states, "No matter what circumstances you are in, never lose sight of the Infinite One. Degradation is impossible for those who have accepted the Supreme Being as the Ideal of their lives. Indulging in mean thoughts only engenders crude vibrations in the Citta, as the result of which you will have to take rebirth in lower species in order to suffer the lowly Saḿskáras created by those crude vibrations. Thus you must arouse higher vibrations in your Citta. Even a man of King Bharata's calibre had to take rebirth as a deer because at the time of his death he was deeply anxious about a fawn. Thus regardless of what you are at present or what you may possibly become in the future, do not digress from the ideal of the Great in any circumstances: do not stray even a step away from the path of realization of Absolute Bliss. Ananda Marga or the path to eternal bliss is the only path for you." (1)

The wealthy suffer more mentally

Ananda Marga says, "If money or wealth would have been the solution of all the problems then in that case rich persons would have always enjoyed being in a state of bliss. But in society it is not like that. The suffering of the rich is more than the poor." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “Human desire knows no end. Millionaires want to become multimillionaires, because they are not satisfied with their million. Ask the millionaires if they are happy with their money. They will say, “Where is the money? I am somehow pulling on.” This answer indicates their ignorance of aparigraha. But such feelings have another adverse effect on body and mind. Out of excessive fondness for physical or mental pleasures people become mad to earn money and amass wealth. As money becomes the be-all and end-all of life, the mind gets crudified. Constant hankering after money results in negligence of one’s health, and this makes the body unfit. Therefore, santośa sádhaná lies in being contented with the earnings of normal labour, without any undue pressure on the body and mind. To remain contented, one has to make a special type of mental effort to keep aloof from external allurements.” (2)

Note: In some of our western countries nowadays, and wherever materialism reigns supreme and money is more free-flowing, the number of psychic diseases is multiplying day by day. The "haves" are coming under the grip of mental ailments like depression, frustration, hopeless, and melancholia. Many are conflicted and suffer from a degrading psychic flow. That is why so many westerners, buckled by materialism like those in the USA, go to psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and other counselors for their mental health issues. And the number of adults being treated with antidepressant medications / drugs has more than doubled since 1999 to an alarming 15% of the adult population. Without medication and counseling etc, they fall into a tailspin of moderate to deep depression. Even then those two therapies (i.e. counseling and medication) are just band-aid measures. They do not address and resolve the problem in a meaningful, permanent manner. The only true cure is psycho-spiritual practices like sadhana etc. Only then may one develop a balanced mind and achieve equipoise and peace.

Baba’s humour: All Ánanda Márgiis are ghosts

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "Sometimes you went to a particular house which is, suppose people say it is a haunted house. There are some haunted houses in each and every town, and I have already told that if you get any such haunted house, you just purchase it or use that house because ‘ghosts’ won’t terrorize the Ánanda Márgiis, [Bábá, laughing] because each and every Ánanda Márgii is a "ghost"."

[laughter]

Sadguru Baba says, "शिवस्य गणः | शिव का गण है | They are followers of Shiva. The ghosts will not terrorize "ghosts". (1)
