Rampant ills of selfishness + 3 more

Baba
Rampant ills of selfishness

Namaskar,

Plants and animals are not selfish; they take care of their own existence, which everyone does, but not more than that. They do not take more than what is needed.

For example, a lion does not go on killing all of the animals in the jungle, even though it is capable of doing so. It kills only when it is hungry, for its existence. Because that is how Parama’tma’ has designed animals. Similarly, a shark does not kill all the fish in the ocean, even though it is capable of doing so. But sick human beings, in addition to preserving their own existence, have a tremendous desire for self-pleasure and that is misdirected.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Covetous capitalists want to amass as much as possible even though other human beings are not getting food to eat. If bloodsucker capitalists keep on exploiting general masses, a situation may arise wherein general people, deprived of basic necessities, may forcefully take money or kill the parasite capitalists to protect their own existence.

This selfish nature is most evident in sick human beings specifically in capitalist countries. Capitalism is nothing but selfish nature at its extreme in human beings. Such a selfish nature is not good for society.

Wrong direction: marry but don't want children

In capitalist countries, people with no children feel that why should they pay for education for other children. Education is so expensive that people marry but do not have any interest in having their own children. In rich countries, even the population is decreasing. In Germany, the population has decreased, also in the U.S. That is why there is a need for the US to have immigrants. Without immigrants, the population of the U.S would have reduced even further.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In the U.S, old people are dying, and the same number of children are not being born. Because there is a fear among people that if they have children, then it will be an added responsibility in raising the children which is so expensive. When such people grow old, then there will not be anyone to even give them medicines, or to take them to the graveyard. Because they felt that to have children is an added responsibility, and why have children as it will cost so much - not to mention the amount of time they have to spend to raise children. Japan has a similar problem.

More police & gated communities: sign of distrust

Looking back at India, about 50 years ago, the number of police officers was much less because there was no need. Slowly people became selfish, wanted to amass more money, build large houses, and for their security they needed police. More gated communities were built, and more police were needed to maintain security as the deprived people got engaged in illegal activities to fulfill their basic necessities. Prior to the 1970’s, there were no houses with big boundaries. Prior to Independence, people did not construct boundaries around their houses. Simply to mark the house boundary, people may have erected a pole, but they did not construct actual boundaries.

Nowadays in India, there are tall boundaries around houses as well as apartment complexes with tight security in place, and one may need to have a pass to enter into the premises. Being affected by self-interest and capitalism, people amass more wealth than they need, and in turn others do not get their basic necessities fulfilled. The deprived people often become criminals, and attack the wealthy. Mostly rich people are on the receiving end of a crime and face serious consequences. The lives of those impacted by crime are severely affected, either their family members are killed, or their wealth is stolen etc.

Selfish persons suffer in misery

Capitalism is based on the principle of selfishness. Selfishness is a disease, and the result is not beneficial. Selfishness is not good at one’s home or in society. Selfishness is a mental disease in which one thinks that no one is mine; a selfish person thinks that everyone is on their own. As long as one is physically well and has the ability to earn money, one works hard and earns as much as possible. But when something happens to the selfish person’s health, there is no one to take care of them as they never lived with anyone.

If a selfish person needs to be taken to the hospital or needs care then no one is there to help them. When a selfish person thinks only for their own self, then he does not have any friends or family members. Due to the resultant stress, such a person’s lifespan typically is reduced. Over time, consequent to this stress, such people experience loneliness and not uncommonly attempt suicide. It is very sad how one has failed to utilize the capacity of human birth. For a perceived short term gain, the selfish person forgets the long term benefits of living and sharing with others.

Conclusion

AM philosophy says that the whole world is one society. Everyone is my own. With this type of feeling, love for each other will increase in a society. A lot of problems which exist today in the world will be easily resolved and new ones arising in the future can be prevented by developing a sense of togetherness and removing self-interest by thinking the whole world is one society, and everyone is my own.

In Him,
Nirakar

“Human beings of the world, unite!”

Ananda Marga ideology says, “Sadvipras will firmly declare, “All human beings belong to one race. Everyone has equal rights. Human beings are brothers and sisters!” These sadvipras will sternly warn the exploiters of society, “The exploitation of human beings cannot be allowed!” and, “Religious hypocrisy cannot be tolerated!” Giving a clarion call to the fragmented human society from beneath the saffron flag, the symbol of service and sacrifice, they will proclaim at the top of their voices, “Human beings of the world, unite!” (1)

Spiritual exhilaration

"Ámi, tomáre bhúliyá chinu kata din...” (Prabhat Samgiita #4091)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, I remained forgetful and oblivious of You for such a long span of time. Unmindful about Your presence, I traveled on the rugged, jagged path of dogma, groupism, and materialism; as a result, I got swept away in the ocean current. My Golden Lotus, that time You were unknown to me.

My Supreme Entity, my days were full of stains. Barraged by insults, my life lost its charm and became shrouded in hopelessness, without any spirituality. So many lonely, lifeless, isolated silent nights passed in Your longing, i.e. crying in utter despair, without any hope. My spiritual journey got hit by the cold, northern breeze. Sadhana was poor and my mind just became more and more dry. There was no flow. That drained me of all my optimism, inspiration, and bhakti. I became drowned in staticity and degradation, fully under the control of animal vrttis.

Baba, now You are here. Today, spring has come; it is so blissful. The whole environment is filled with colourful flowers and a sweet aroma. The dark night has changed into glittering moonlight, shining in the sky. Peacocks are dancing in happiness and expressing their joy by extending their feathers. By Your grace, the sweet breeze is blowing softly. This grand scene is thrilling and exhilarating for my whole existence; it is making me quiver in the subtle vibration. That lovely air is giving me the hint and telling me, "Listen! Whose divine flute is resonating; Baba is calling you..."

Negative samadhi

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "By the way you should know that samádhi does not only occur as a result of a certain realization; other samádhis can occur on indriyas or the five fundamental factors. When the mind is focused on a particular object and becomes intensely concentrated it is called samádhi. According to spiritual science the samádhi attained when the entire mind is pin-pointed on Parama Puruśa is called prajiṋá samádhi."
"When a sádhaka focuses his or her mind on the solid factor (solid is one of the five fundamental factors) and thinks “I am the earth” he or she attains kśitibhaetik samádhi, losing all practical intelligence in the process. Those who constantly think about rupees or dollars attain a kind of samádhi, too, for they become completely identified with their crude object of attraction. If such people incur heavy losses due to the collapse of their business or bank, they will die an instant death, for the pillars on which their life was built crumbled beneath them. So, once they lost their wealth, they lost their lives too." (1)

Story of my own cousin

Note: Tragically, my own cousin experienced this type of negative samadhi. During the last economic downturn, he became very worried about his finances. He had an inheritance of 20 million dollars, and he thought he was going to lose it all. He experienced a very strange, deep, dark depression and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

Finally, his mind just stopped - and he sat there frozen - completely fixated on the prospect of losing all his money. He sat in a comatose state completely engrossed in thoughts about losing money - everything else in his mind vanished. It was just money, money, money. He skipped his food, ignored natural call, and sat in one spot all day long for almost 1 week. He did not die, but he came very close to death. When at last he emerged from this state, he was totally unaware about what had happened. It was as if he had been in a vacuum.

Baba's warning is that mundane things like money or wealth should never be one's object of ideation. Worldly things are by definition transient. They slip away. And when that happens, people become shocked, even negative samadhi. This becomes very serious for those who were very attached with those objects. They will fall into a state of terrible misery, and perhaps even death.

Best is to goad and point the mind to Parama Purusa. Because if one is fixated on the mundane and prone to that negative type of samadhi then one may remain depressed or even resort to suicide…

In Him,
Sudhiindra

Soul vs átmá

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Ruh, spirit, soul and átmá are not exactly the same thing. A ruh can rise up from the grave; a spirit can move around and frighten people; a soul can come close to God and sit beside Him; while a non-attributional átmá is not bound by the bondages of time, space or person. This entity beyond the realm of nature was the contribution of the vipras. Their intellectual struggle against the hostile aspects of nature, assisted by the kśatriyas, gave them the opportunity to imagine this kind of puruśa [consciousness] entity beyond the realm of nature." Right cure of jealousy + 4 more

Baba
Right cure of jealousy

Namaskar,

By seeing others progress and finding happiness, it is quite common for people to become jealous. For example, when a neighbor amasses more wealth, then some feel upset. Or if a fellow student gets a top-grade on an examination, then others become depressed. A co-worker wins an award, and some employees are completely irritated. Such types of reactions plague people. It is a vrtti: jealousy.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Baba explains that at present human beings have 50 propensities, one of which is jealousy. If a person does not have proper control over their mind or if their mind is not sufficiently elevated, then when they see others progress they feel jealous. Because they have that vrtti or psychic tendency.

Harmful effect of jealousy

Those not doing sadhana for mental purification will naturally suffer from jealousy. And they will wallow in that misery. They will not be able to sleep at night, and all day long they will be distracted, just preoccupied with thoughts of jealousy. Such will be the extent of their misery.

The mind overpowered by jealousy does not like to witness someone else's success. This is the general rule. When a person suffers from jealousy, they feel upset, angry, and sometimes devastated seeing someone else advance. It is completely disconcerting for them. That is why a jealous person will always want to drag down anyone who is making progress. And a jealous person will feel delighted by their downfall. Such is the drastic effect of jealousy.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

In the general society, jealousy is looked upon as a normal condition, and in some countries it is even praised. This type of reaction is common and accepted. Yet, indulging in such feelings of jealousy only leads to misery, sadness, and hopelessness. In that situation, how can they think about Parama Purusa. That is why in Ananda Marga teachings, jealousy is classified as a psychic disease. It is one of the internal enemies - not external bondages. It creates bad samskaras.

Approach to solve mental pain

As sadhakas, we strive to keep the mind happy, calm, and blissful; jealousy only leads to misery, sadness, and hopelessness. We should never allow the mind to become consumed by jealousy. For this, Baba has given us a two-step process:

(a) First neutralise those feelings of jealousy toward your neighbour by embracing that individual as your own. If you think that, "This person is my friend, or my close relation, or my colleague so I feel that it is good that they got success", then feelings of jealousy towards that individual will wane, and ultimately be eradicated. Once that happens the mind will become calm and balanced.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

(b) The next step is to channelise that calm mind towards Parama Purusa by engaging in spiritual practices: Singing kiirtan, doing sadhana etc.

Thus, it is a two-step process: First neutralisation and then channelisation through the practice of kiirtan and sadhana.

Conclusion

In this following section of His discourse, "Taking the Opposite Stance in Battle", Baba practically shows us the technique for neutralising the mind.

Ananda Marga ideology says, "When someone is happy, ordinary people feel jealous. They do not try to let their minds flow in the same direction as that happy person; rather they feel psychic pain thinking of that person’s happiness. The correct strategy should be to arouse the feeling of friendliness (maetrii) in the mind towards that happy person. Instead of feeling jealous one should think, “So-and-so is my friend – how wonderful! She is so happy!” If the mind thinks thus, then all jealousy will be removed." (1)

By following Baba's practical suggestions and guideline, any sadhaka or any individual can easily control feelings of jealousy, and thereby avoid accumulating that negative samskara. This is one great boon for individuals.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

A sadhaka will not just neutralise the mind, but will follow Baba's guideline to goad the mind towards Parama Purusa. Because when the mind is clear of all feelings of jealousy, then in that calm state, the mind is light and free and can easily be channelised to the Supreme.

So "taking the opposite stance in battle" means withdrawing the mind from a depraving tendency and then goading it in a positive direction towards Parama Purusa. This is a very practical guideline that we should all use in day to day life.

Namaskar,
in His love,
Veda

~ In-depth study ~

"Let Mr. So-and-so be harmed, let So-and-so be destroyed"

How does jealousy create negative samskaras? Because by merely harboring thoughts of jealousy and wishing ill upon others, one will be prone towards negative actions, and hence have to undergo the reaction. Secondly, feelings of jealousy and other negative thinking patterns stain the mind. At the time of death that stain will remain, and one will get a body or birth according to that negative thought. If one's mind was stained with the idea of harming others due to extreme feelings of jealousy, then they may be reborn as lower beings (animals) so that they can spend their life inflicting harm upon others. Such is the danger of psychic diseases like jealousy. Yet so many in the general society are afflicted by this ailment. And they will suffer for it. That is the law of prakrti.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Ananda Marga ideology says, "You are thinking mentally, “Let Mr. So-and-so be harmed, let So-and-so be destroyed, let So-and-so die. Then I will get my promotion.” One may think like this but afterwards one reaps the consequences according to one’s thoughts. One only harms oneself when one thinks ill of others because the thought of harming others is simply a mental action and the mental reactions follow. How shall these reactions accrue? The reactions materialize in the form of harm to you. So, if there is ill feeling in your thinking, i.e., if there is a feeling of malevolence, then that which you wish to happen to others will happen to you. Because somehow the mind has to be restored back to its normal state and that will happen through you. Then, you will say, “O Lord, I have committed no sin, then why did such and such things happen to me?” People behave like this. When one thinks ill of others, one does not say, “O Lord, how much harm I think of doing to others?” In other words, one acts completely to the contrary. This is nothing but deceit and hypocrisy." (2)

Story: what do you want, I can grant you anything...

There was a man who was fully involved in long and arduous prayer to gain material wealth.

Finally his prayers were answered. The divine power appeared before him and said, "You have prayed for a long time. What do you want. I can grant you anything. Just tell me what you want. But be careful, whatever you ask for, your neighbor will receive double."

The person was intrigued; he thought and thought. He carefully considered what would happen if he asked for a fancy car, or gold, or other riches. Finally he said to the divine power, "I want that you should break one of my hands and one of my legs."

Hearing this, the divine power was astonished: "Why did you not ask for good things? Why did you not ask for gold, gems, or jewels. Why did you not ask for any riches?"

The man replied, "No, that is not the way. I do not want to see my neighbour happier than I am. Better I should suffer. I will be happy knowing that my neighbor is suffering more."

This story is a clear-cut case of jealousy. Such types of feelings are commonplace in the general society. As sadhakas, we should never fall in this way. Rather we are to follow the above teachings of Sadguru.

Key formula

The standard mechanism for overcoming mental diseases like greed (lobha) and attachment (moha) etc is to channelise those negative feelings towards Parama Purusa. For instance, if one lusts a particular person or money, then that desire - "I want money" - should be channelised towards Parama Purusa. The aspirant should think, "O' Parama Purusa, I want You and only You." Then one will gain bhakti, by His grace. The allurement for the mundane will no longer disturb them.
http://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The question then arises: What to do with feelings of jealousy? Because that tendency of mind - i.e. jealousy - cannot be projected, redirected, or channelised toward Parama Purusa. One cannot say, "O Parama Purusa, I am jealous of You." So channelizing feelings of jealousy towards Parama Purusa is not possible. In that case, what is the remedy? The answer has been explained above. First one should neutralise that tendency and then channelise that calm mind towards the Supreme Entity.

The brilliant stars

Note: Only those who sincerely practice the higher lessons of sahaja yoga meditation can understand this song in the depths of their heart.

"Esecho ámár ghare, kripár pasará háte kare..." (Prabhat Samgiita #3233)

Purport:

Parama Purusa, You have come to my abode holding a basket of krpá, my compassion-personified Entity. Your august arrival in my home is not due to my calling – it is solely because of Your infinite love for me. Baba, You have taken so much trouble in coming here. You are bliss-personified. I do not have any merit of my own, nor have I done any good deeds or proper sadhana to bring me close to You. Even then, with a deep yearning in my heart, I go on remembering and calling You. Today, You blessed me and entered my abode. It is Your causeless grace.

Supreme Entity, Baba, the brilliant stars of the vast, expansive sky are chanting Your name and singing: “You are the Supreme Being, the only Saviour -- You help everyone.” Everywhere, all the time, You pour Your causeless karuna on one and all. You are the controller of this entire universe. In the blue sky, meteors and galaxies are shining their effulgence for You - to serve You, to please You. Today, You have come to my home. It is Your endless mercy.

Parama Purusa Baba, You have given me so much, but, alas, I did not offer anything to You. Whatever I have in my life is because of Your affection. I do not have any merit of my own. But You have bestowed upon me Your abundant blessings and filled my entire existence with Your fathomless love. Unfortunately, I did not give You anything. Baba, today I have placed tiny fresh flower blossoms along with my entire being at Your lotus feet. Now, You have come to my abode. I am surrendering myself at Your altar...

She was killed by so-called ghost

Ananda Marga ideology guides us, "I had a certain acquaintance whose garden was quite large. One night his wife thought she saw a ghost in a corner of the garden. In Bihar, a female ghost is called `chudel' in Hindi. At the sight of the imagined ghost she cried out in fear, and fainted. She never regained consciousness and died some time later. The next night the same gentleman came out of his house at the same time. He also thought he saw the ghost. `Why should people have to die one after the other in this way?' he thought. Stepping forward to strike at the imaginary ghost with a stick, he suddenly saw that it was nothing but a bush which, in the moonlight, looked just like a human being. His wife had died for nothing, terrified by the deceptive image of a bush. Most so-called ghosts are like this. Towards the end of the rainy season rotting vegetation often gives out a gas, called marsh gas or will-o'-the-wisp, which bursts into flame when it comes in contact with oxygen. This burning gas may easily be taken to be a ghost. This is how a fear complex can develop." (1)

Note: In His various discourses, Baba clearly states that there is no such thing as “ghosts”; so-called ghosts do not exist. Most often, people in their mind imagine that there is a so-called ghost, as is the case in the above example. When in fact there is a perfectly rational and logical explanation. People imagine it and become convinced that it is real.

Prout condemns capital punishment

Prout philosophy states, “You know that nothing is perfect in this universe of relativity. So it is quite natural that the judicial system of the world, whether in the past, present or future, can never be perfect. Therefore nobody should be given capital punishment on the basis of this imperfect system.”

“Each and every individual, whether they are a criminal or not, can claim a chance to rectify their conduct from the society. So in PROUT’s legal structure everybody should get ample scope for rectifying their character and conduct. If a person is condemned to capital punishment, he or she won’t get such scope, so PROUT denounces this sort of punishment.”

“But in very special cases, where a person has become a demon and is going against the collective interest and there is no chance of rectification, circumstances may arise which warrant capital punishment. For example, during war this exception may sometimes be permissible. But generally we should not support this punishment on principle. Punishment should be appropriate to the offense.” (1)

Re: Wt & Bribe

Namaskar,

Those days, SS Goenka was collecting and giving Rs 400 as tip to the cook named Dinbandhu in Ananda Nagar. The monthly salary of the cook was Rs 400 and Dinbandhu was additionally getting 400 as tip. That means the cook was getting two months salary during DMS month those days. That is the reason the cook Dinbandhu was giving special attention and privileges to SS Goenka dada - and others who contributed to that tip like the Vijay Agarwal family.

Stem of confusion in Buddhism

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Regarding jiivátmá [unit consciousness], Buddha did not use the term jiivátmá or any such word, but he uttered one sentence, Attáhi attánaḿ natha. This sentence may  have two meanings. One meaning is, “One is the lord of one’s own self,” and the other is, “Átman is the lord of átman.” The second meaning perhaps is more acceptable because in the Prákrta language the word appan is generally used to indicate one’s own self, while the word attá is mainly used in the sense of átman, or soul. Thus one cannot conclusively prove that Buddha did not accept the existence of átman; there is sufficient scope for controversy on this point." (1)

Ananda Marga philosophy states, "Buddha clearly and firmly supported the doctrine of rebirth. In fact, no doctrine before him had placed as much stress on the theory of rebirth as his did. One who accepts the theory of rebirth is bound to accept the existence of átman also. If the átman is non-existent, then who will take rebirth?" (2)

Blissful times: Baba & Prabhat Samgiita + 4 more

Baba

Blissful times: Baba & Prabhat Samgiita

Note: Prabhat Samgiita day is on 14 September as that was the day Baba gave His first composition in 1982.

Namaskar,

When I think about those days, I still feel the scene was as if heaven descended upon this earth. So blissful and charming, His presence was. Sometimes Baba would open His eyes and look around and then close His eyes and listen quietly.

When one song finished, if the song was new, then playing His divine liila Baba used to ask one and all: "Do you all approve of this song? Should I include it in Prabhat Samgiita?".

Margiis used to respond, "Yes Baba, it must be included! It is very good!"

Then, in His divine liila, Baba used to say, "You are my guardians. If you don't accept it, then I will tear it apart and throw it away."

Hearing this, everyone used to smile. And Baba used to say, "Ok, when you have approved this song, then it will be included in Prabhat Samgiita."

He used to do this type of grand play regularly. Sometimes it seems like He did this with each and every song. And always it was so beautifully done, and everyone basked in the sweet atmosphere.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Everyone must sing

On another occasion, after Prabhat Samgiita had just been sung, Baba asked, "Who was not singing?"

Then immediately everybody became extremely alert. When the next song started, everybody was very careful, and all VSS personnel were keenly watching. That very day I felt that Baba was pointedly telling us that everyone should sing Prabhat Samgiita, and nobody should think that Prabhat Samgiita is for Bengalis only or for a few professional musicians etc.

By this way, by encouraging and attracting us all to step forward and sing, Baba used to come and bless us. And we used to sing Prabhat Samgiita. Those memories are unforgettable. This whole entire scene of receiving Him with Prabhat Samgiita was so blissful. I feel that Prabhat Samgiita is a special, unique gift which has no comparison.

Conclusion

This is a small glimpse into the glorious scene those days of how we would receive Him with Prabhat Samgiita and how He would shower us in His endless love.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

The conclusive idea then is that the reception of Baba is the greatest singular event in the life of a bhakta. This is the most cherished occasion and most auspicious moment. Baba has transformed the process and specially designated Prabhat Samgiita as the chosen medium whereby bhakas can receive Him, then that means Prabhat Samgiita has a special value. It has a sanctified role and blessed stance.

So it is our duty to recognize this truth and uphold the sacred standard of Prabhat Samgiita - and not allow others to taint this holy and divine treasure.

It was always so enchanting to be there to receive Baba those days. Still this divine scene is unfolding in the heart and mind of each and every sadhaka. In dhyana, we call for Him to come close and grace us with His presence. As beautiful as it was to be there those days, often I feel that receiving Him now in Guru cakra is even more sweet. Without all the external obstacles, one can openly share and express the feeling of the heart with Him - and always He responds.

Namaskar,
In Him,
Madhukar

Receiving Him before 1982

At all the gatherings prior to 1982, whether big or small, Baba was received with the strong force of the slogan, "Parama Pita Baba Ki-- Jai!". After September 1982, when Prabhat Samgiita was introduced, Baba was always received by the more intimate singing of Prabhat Samgiita.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

Of course at the large annual DMC programs when thousands and thousands were attending, then surely all were raising the 'Parama Pita Baba Ki- Jai!' slogan in one thunderous voice when Baba arrived in the pandal. So at the global DMC's that was the scene, even up to 1990.

But it should be remembered that at all such grand occasions, when leaving His room at the BQ (Baba Quarters) then those present were receiving Him with Prabhat Samgiita and then when He would arrive at the pandal for DMC, all the bhaktas would raise the Jai slogan. So both were being done. This was the case during His 1984 tour across India when He performed 16 DMC's, as well as in 1987 for the Bhagalpur DMC. Plus this was the normal way when He was in Ranchi, or Ananda Shiila, or Diigha etc. At all these places where DMC was held after 1982, Baba was greeted and received with Prabhat Samgiita when He emerged from the BQ, and then the resounding Jai slogan was raised when He reached the pandal. That is how it was for DMC.

On all other countless occasions, whether coming or going from His house, or for general darshan, or field walk etc, in all those blissful moments of His divine arrival, then Baba was always received with the tender sweetness of Prabhat Samgiita. This was the standard approach after 1982.

To field walk

Already the driver had the car parked to that spot where Baba would come out from the house. And we would all anxiously crowd around and encircle the automobile - positioning ourselves in any way we could to see Baba when He would emerge from the house. All were involved in singing Prabhat Samgiita - everyone's mind fully vibrated with a strong desire to see Him. With this great anticipation and devotional longing, we would sing Prabhat Samgiita and look anxiously for His grand arrival.
https://anandamargauniversal.blogspot.com/

When we sensed that Baba would soon be coming, the inner spiritual yearning would be even more aroused - all wishing to see Him. Finally, the auspicious moment arrived and He would grace us with His exquisite presence. He was always so sweet and charming. On many occasions, Baba would stand there to talk and say something. The car was ready and the door was opened for Him to get in, yet Baba would move slowly to grant us time to gaze at Him. With His beautiful countenance, He would stand there inquiring about our welfare or giving some direction, and we would cherish each and every moment with Him before He would have to enter the car and go for a fieldwalk. It was such a blissful scene - even today - every moment in one mind's eye this can be experienced.

Upon His return a similar scene would occur. Once the gate to the driveway opened and we knew Baba's car was returning then we would quickly rush in and line up along the edges of the driveway. Whatever activities, duties, talks or dealings were going on stopped immediately. All were eager to get a spot to see Him. The vibration were palpable. Everyone came rushing, yet there was not much space along the driveway. There had to be enough room for His car to pass, yet all wanted to be close. Somehow we all managed to grab a sacred space - along that tiny area along the side of the driveway - in hopes of seeing Him. We would all anticipate His arrival, singing Prabhat Samgiita - anxiously watching for His car to come in from the road. Finally, He would arrive and while singing we would carefully watch Him emerge from His car. In this way we would receive Him. All were singing and some were lovingly calling and crying, "Baba, Baba, Baba. " The whole scene was so charged with love and bhakti. And still today and in the future also, sadhakas can intimately experience this same type of closeness - or even greater intimacy with Him.

Unparalleled charm

“Bandhu...ye va toma'ya bale kat'hora...
Ka'che ele bujhebe se jana, Sujana toma'ra mata keha na'i…” (Prabhat Samgiita #0268)

Purport:

O’ Parama Purusa, my Bandhu, I won't ever be fearful of Your harshness. During the journey on this path of divine effulgence I will go on looking towards You. You are my everything.

Baba, those who say that You are not kind do not understand Your greatness. The reality is that Your harshness is covering Your heavenly softness.

Baba whoever tells You are unkind remains far away from You. If that person comes close, they will understand that no one else is as tender and charming as You. No one is as sweet and loving as You...

Fasting: pregnant & nursing mothers

Namaskar,

Baba’s chief guideline about fasting is contingent upon one’s standard of health. If you are of excellent health then you can practice our AM system of fasting.

Ananda Marga Yogic Treatments states: “Only persons in very good health and with good energy should fast without water. Persons suffering from gall or kidney-stones should never undertake a waterless fast. Sick persons and people in mediocre health should observe fasting taking plenty of lemon juice and water. Persons who are very weak may take a small quantity of fruit and milk.” (1)

So in His above teaching Baba’s fasting guideline delineates three grades of people: (a) very healthy, (b) sick or mediocre health, (c) very weak.

In Him,
Kalpana Devii

Generally, when we women are pregnant we are in the prime years of our life and full of vitality. Our physical health is very good; indeed, it is the ideal time to sustain a new babe.

Hence, we mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding and in very good health are encouraged to follow Baba’s fasting guideline from Sixteen Points. So long as a medical professional has evaluated your condition and can attest to the high overall state of health, then you are welcome and advised to fast. That’s to say, there should not be any confusion about this: There is no health guideline or conduct rule barring any pregnant or nursing mom from engaging in a dry fast. After all, neither pregnancy nor breast-feeding is a disease. You can be pregnant and / or breast feeding and be in a wonderful state of health. In that case, as a mother you may fast.

However, sometimes we may become sick or weakened during these times in which case we should consult a medical professional who is keenly familiar with yogic teachings and our AM way of life and then refer to Baba’s aforementioned guidelines about fasting.

There are times and conditions when Baba has given stipulations for women - and this is for our welfare. For instance:

(a) “A woman should be allowed to rest and abstain from all sorts of household chores for at least twenty-one days after a childbirth.” (Caryacarya - 3, General Health Rules)

(b) “During menstruation, pregnancy and within one month of delivery, women must not practise ásanas or any other exercise.” (Caryacarya - 3, Asanas, Rules for ásanas, Point #21)

But there are no such guidelines that bar pregnant / breastfeeding women from fasting.

Know these three cardinal socio-political principles

Prout philosophy states, “For the all-round welfare and development of human beings, society needs to follow some fundamental socio-political principles. Without the firm foundation of such principles, disunity, injustice and exploitation will flourish. To avoid this and to safeguard the interests of all people, the leaders of society must ensure that cardinal socio-political principles are strictly followed. Otherwise, individual and collective progress can never be achieved.”
“There are three cardinal socio-political principles which should never be violated. First, people should not be retrenched from their occupations unless alternative employment has been arranged for them. Secondly, people should not be forcibly converted from one religion to another. Thirdly, no mother tongue should be suppressed. Occupation, spiritual practice and mother tongue are very important to human beings. If the sentiments associated with them are hurt, human beings will be deeply affected. So, you should never violate these cardinal socio-political principles.” (1)

Prout philosophy states, “If any group tries to violate any of these three cardinal socio-political principles, you should immediately oppose them with a thundering voice and sufficient force. Victory will be yours, because you are supporting the collective psychology. But before launching any movement, you should make sure that the masses are conscious of their exploitation, otherwise the movement will not be successful. Although it may take some time to raise the consciousness of the masses, ultimately you will be victorious.” (2)
