Uniqueness of new book AV 1 - 2 (Pure)

Namaskar,

The newly published Pure edition of Ánanda Vacanámrtam Parts 1 & 2 is unique in many respects which have been outlined in prior letters. Here we examine another special facet of this book.

Think about it: Most likely, there have been times in your life when you were reading a book and became very interested in a particular point or topic. You wanted to know where else in the book a given term appears, so you flipped back and forth through the book but could not find the term anywhere. Well, an index / शब्द सूची eliminates that problem. Because an index / शब्द सूची will tell you on which exact pages that term is mentioned in the book.

Overview: In the back of the book there is a listing of key words in this Pure edition of Ánanda Vacanámrtam Parts 1 & 2. And next to each word are the page numbers where that term appears in the book. This is essential for researchers and interested readers. Sometimes in India, the term “index” / शब्द सूची is used to show the table of contents at the front of the text. But, in our usage here, the index refers to the word listing at the end of the book. And here is more about that.

First AV book with index

To date, this is the first book in the Ananda Vacanamrtam series to have an index. In fact, there are only a limited few AM English books that have an index (see addendum 1). The vast majority of English AM books do not have an index / शब्द सूची, and certainly not any of the prior editions of Ananda Vacanamrtam. With regards to the totality of AM Hindi publications, there is not a single edition that has an index / शब्द सूची. That is why it is very cumbersome to search and find a given term in our AM Hindi publications. In this Pure edition of Ánanda Vacanámrtam Parts 1 & 2, there is both an English and Hindi index.

Value of the Index

In the back of the book beginning on page 299 there is an index. Essentially, this is a listing of both the English and Saḿskrta words that appear in this text. This listing is alphabetized and is six pages long. Basically word that is used in this book is enlisted here, along with the page numbers on which the term appears. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

(A) Green Circle: On the below scan, there is a green circle around the letters “K”, “M”, and “P”. This marks the beginning of the listing of all the terms used in this book that start with those respective letters.

(B) Kiirtana: Look again at the below scan and go down the left column. There is a dark blue box around the term “Kiirtana”. And after the term “Kiirtana”, there are a variety of numbers: 56, 57, and 61. These numerals are the main pages numbers where the term “kiirtana” appears in the book. So if you look at the listing, it is clear that the term “kiirtana” appears prominently on three different pages in the book. The term “kiirtana” might appear one time on the page or numerous times, but it is certainly there on that page.

(C) Materialism: Now look at the below scan and go a short ways down the right column. There is an orange box around the word, “Materialism”. After the term “Materialism”, there are a few page numbers: 8, 33, 187, and 188. That means that the term “Materialism” appears most prominently on those four pages of the book.

(D) Parama Purusa: On the below scan go most of the way down the second column and you will see a red box around the term “Parama Purusa”. And it is followed by a large array of page numbers: 56, 75, 77 etc. That means the term “Parama Purusa” is quite prevalent in the book as it appears prominently on numerous pages, 17 in total.

Excellent tool for researchers

Most likely, there have been times in your life when you were reading a book and became very interested in a particular point or topic. So you wanted to know where else in the book a given term appears, and you promptly flipped back and forth through the book but could not find the term anywhere. Well, this index eliminates that problem. Because that index will tell you on which exact pages that term is mentioned in the book.

So above Index is an excellent tool for researchers, as well as ordinary sadhakas. If you are looking for a particular topic like “sadhana” or “civilization” etc, then simply go to the index and look to see if that term is there. In the case of the term “sadhana”, one would go the the listing marked “S”, and see if the term “sadhana” is listed. Likewise, one would look under the listing of “C” and see if the word “civilization” is listed. By this way, one can easily know if that term / topic is mentioned in this book or not.

Note: Starting on page 291 there is an index for terms written in the Hindi language.

In Him,
Mugdha Dev

Why multiple languages

Kindly know our aim is to capture the words that Baba spoke on a given occasion in the language that He spoke them. We want to emulate what those sadhakas heard and felt when they sat at His feet and listened to those discourses.

So if Baba spoke in one, two, or three languages, then the book was printed in that sequence, according to the original language. How can we change even one word that Guru spoke. This series of Pure AM books aims to present the actual words Baba spoke in the original language that He spoke them on that occasion - in an attempt to create that same vibration.

Pure AV 1 & 2: Special text box quotes

Baba

Pure AV 1 & 2: Special text box quotes

Namaskar,

The new Pure edition of Ánanda Vacanámrtam Parts 1 & 2 is unique in a number of ways. First and foremost, it is a 100% accurate rendering of Sadguru Baba’s original discourse. That is what makes it pure and special, as well as a true gift for humanity, at a dirt-cheap price. In contrast, earlier editions of AV 1 & 2 are wildly inaccurate, either missing large sections of Baba’s discourses, or littered with errors, or both.

So this Ánanda Vacanámrtam Parts 1 & 2 (Pure) is a true and proper rendering of what Sadguru Baba actually spoke. In addition, there are many features in this published edition that aim to make it easier and more meaningful for the reader, which have been discussed in prior letters.

Now here is the new thing in this series. Steps were taken to highlight some of Baba’s special teachings. In particular, some of Baba’s unique teachings have been placed in a “text box” at the end of many of the chapters. All done to give readers an opportunity to further reflect on Guru’s real words. And that is what we focus on here.

Gift of gold

This Pure edition of AV Parts 1 & 2 contains 46 discourses. And at the end of many of the chapters there is an inspiring or unique quote offset by some type of box or design. Here below is one example from page 195:

Here are some key points about the above image:

(A) This quote (“If there is any hidden desire…”) has been specially placed on the last page of chapter 34, “Salvation Is Possible While in This Very Body”.

(B) The quote was placed inside the black text box to garner the reader’s attention, as it is a very significant teaching on bhakti and spiritual life. Every true sadhaka will be keen to know about this.

(C) Now see the red box in the above image where it says, “AV 1 -2 Pure, “Who is Gopa””; that is the reference of the quote. That tells us that this quote is from another discourse in the book, “Who is Gopa”, i.e. chapter 11.

(D) So the above quote (“If there is any hidden desire…”) is not related with chapter 34 per se, even though it has been placed at the end of chapter 34. Rather, it is meant as a stand alone guideline. And if one wishes to know more about that quote then they can go to the discourse in which it was given, “Who is Gopa”, i.e. chapter 11.

(E) The editors have placed this type of unique Baba teaching at the end of many of the chapters. And this was done to give readers an opportunity to further reflect on Guru’s actual words.

Conclusion

Sadguru Baba’s divine teachings are wholly unparalleled and deserve to be printed in the finest way possible. That is our job as His disciples. Placing some of Baba’s special guidelines at the end of some of the chapters was done to this end, i.e. to highlight certain teachings. As readers and disciples of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji, we should relish the opportunity to read these dharmic guidelines when we come across them at the end of some of the chapters in this Pure edition of AV 1 -2. And the book is available at a dirt-cheap price.

Pure AV 1 & 2: Why presented this way

Baba
Pure AV 1 & 2: Why presented this way

Namaskar,

This series of Pure AM books aims to present the actual words Baba spoke in the original language that He spoke them on that occasion - in an attempt to create that same vibration.

Three unique features

And here are some of the particulars about the way the book was printed:

(A) Dual page numbers: On the scan appended below there are two red circles marked with the letter “A”. One of the red circles is in the upper left corner of the scan, and the other red circle is in the bottom center of the scan. The number inside the red circle, i.e. 14, is the page number of the book. Generally, a book only has the page numbering in one place on a given page. However, due to age, harsh climatic conditions, or just plain overuse etc, the pages of a book can become tattered, making it difficult to read the pages numbers. Having the page numbering in two places protects against this. Indeed, if you open the book to just about any page you will find this system in use.

(B) Chapter length: In the bottom right corner of the below image there is a dark blue rectangular box marked by the letter “B”. Inside the box it says, “Page 3 of 4.” In this phrase there are two numbers: 3 & 4. Let’s start with the second number. The number “4” signifies that there is a total of four pages in this particular chapter. And the number “3” indicates to the reader that this is the third page of this chapter. By this equation, the reader always knows how far along they are in a particular chapter, i.e. discourse. Most likely, there have been times in your life when you were reading and book and then you flipped ahead to see how many pages were left in the current chapter. Well, this special numbering system eliminates that problem. And if you open the book to any page you will find this system in use.

(C) Book name: In the top center of the below scan there is a green rectangle marked by the letter “C”. The text inside the green rectangle states, “Ánanda Vacanámrtam (Pure), Parts 1 & 2”. By this way, the reader always knows the name of the text. And in the event that they destroy the binding and some pages fall out etc, then it will be easy to identify from which book they are from. Indeed, if you open the book to just about any page you will find this system in use.

Protect authenticity

The above three characteristics (dual page numbers, chapter length, and book name) are very practical features that serve to maintain the integrity of the publication. By this way there is no possibility of distortion through bogus insertions, thereby diluting the teachings etc. For instance, in the case of the Bhagavad Giita, so many dogmatic and exploitative ramblings were inserted into the text. These fraudulent claims, such as caste supremacy, were not part of Lord Krsna’s original teachings and did not belong in the book, but vested interests imposed their will. This time, however, we want to safeguard the authenticity of Mahasambhuti’s dharmic teachings. His divine guidelines should not get lost or tainted by selfish opportunists. The aforementioned features (dual page numbers, chapter length, and book name) protect against any type of fraudulent or bogus insertions etc.

In addition, for greater security, there is a special page in the book that details the exact number of words in the text, as well as other specifications. That also serves to maintain the integrity of the publication, and this point will be elaborated upon in future letters.

In Him,
Mugdha Dev
