Hypocrisy & types of surrender + 2 more

Hypocrisy & types of surrender

Namaskar,

Sadguru Baba guides us about the dharmic understanding of prapatti váda or surrender theory. According to Ananda Marga philosophy, there are three spheres of human life: physical, psychic, and spiritual. In each sphere, as sadhakas, we should utilise all our God-given energy to progress. Those who don't do anything and choose not to utilize their inherent strength are not proper human beings. Out of laziness, such persons think, "I need not do, God will do." But that is entirely wrong - and against the teachings of Ananda Marga.

Unfortunately, some in our AMPS have fallen into a hypocritical mindset. In their duplicitous manner, they say, “Surrender to Baba, and Baba will fix the organisation, AMPS. In so doing, they are committing pratyavaya.

But if in their own personal life they have a problem, they use all their energies and work day and night to solve that problem. This is their hypocritical manner which they have adopted. Why hypocritical ? Please continue reading.

Duty of disciple

First we have to utilize our strength fully. In numerous discourses Baba says that those depending solely on the Preceptor without making any effort to do sadhana will not achieve anything. Baba explains that the Sadguru does not hand out mukti and moksa to those who make no sustained efforts. One needs to exert all their energies to move ahead on the path.

Ananda Marga philosophy says, "The purpose of a great preceptor coming into this world is not to graze his disciples like cattle. The great preceptor comes to liberate men like Himself, to change men into God. Everyone will hence have to make an earnest effort for carrying out sadhana practice as mere idle dependence on the preceptor cannot obtain emancipation." (1)

So there is a vast difference between the dogmatic school of prapatti váda / surrender theory, and the Ananda Marga school of prapatti váda. The dogmatic school encourages lethargy. And in Ananda Marga, our path is based on the idea: Fight against injustices, serve others, and utilize your strength fully, all the while cultivating the idea that it is His work. One should think, “Whatever I am doing is done with His energy. He is the Supreme Doer. Without His grace nothing happens. Let His desire be fulfilled.” That is true surrender.

Misguided people preach, "Don't do any efforts, God will do." Even if their small baby becomes sick, they think there is no need to prescribe medicine or take the baby to the hospital. Their outlook is, “Nothing need be done, God will do.” This is a defective approach.

Four types of prapatti / surrender:

#1: Dogmatic prapatti / surrender: Misguided people preach that, “You need not do anything - God will do.” If their own house is burning then there is no need to do anything - just raise your hands to the sky and let God do. This is their misguided notion of surrender. This breeds indolence and lethargy and has been the downfall of many a community as they never take action to resolve any problem.

#2: No prapatti / no surrender: The next is materialism. This is fundamentally devoid of God ideation as there is no feeling of surrender. Due to ignorance, they have completely forgotten the fact that they are not the source of their own energy and that is supplied by God. So materialists have not an iota of feeling of prapatti / surrender.

#3: Hypocritical prapatti / surrender: Some hypocrites do not have the feeling of surrender within, but when others need their help then they tell them there is no need do anything - just surrender. By this way they shirk their responsibility of helping others. For instance, if Mr. X came to Mr. Y saying that, “My child is sick so please help me.” But Mr. Y is a hypocrite and he does not want to help Mr. X. So Y suggests to X, “Don’t do anything - just surrender to God everything will be alright.” By this way Y escapes his moral duty and keeps his prestige safe through hypocrisy. But if Mr Y’s own baby becomes sick, then he is quick to prescribe medicine or take the baby to the hospital. This is Mr Y’s hypocritical way of prapatti / surrender.

#4: True prapatti / surrender: Those following Ananda Marga ideology will take their sick baby to the hospital. According to their God-given capacity and strength, they will provide all kinds of nursing, medicine, medical care, and whatever else is needed. And, side by side, they will go on thinking: "O' Lord, with the strength given by You, I am trying, but without Your grace nothing will happen. Your are the real Doer. I am fully surrendering unto Your sweet will. Let Your desire be fulfilled."

Conclusion

Here is an English summary of the above Hindi teaching:

When human beings feel that, ‘Parama Purusa is my everything’, then that is called as sharan (shelter). No entity can come under the sharan (shelter) of two different things. Then what is the meaning of sharanagati (surrender)? When living beings give up their ‘I-feeling’ by withdrawing the mind from any other object and feel that Parama Purusa alone is my everything. Up to the time when living beings are thinking that they are working with their own strength, then you should understand that the feeling of sharanagati has not yet come in them. And when human beings think that, ‘I am doing the work only with His strength’, it means the feeling of sharanagati has come in their mind. So when living beings start thinking that, ‘Whatever work I am doing, I am doing with His strength’, then they have the feeling of sharanagati. True Ananda Margiis will take their sick baby to the hospital. According to their God-given capacity and strength, they will provide all kinds of nursing, medicine, medical care, and whatever is needed. And side by side, they will go on thinking: "O' Lord, with the strength given by You, I am trying, but without Your grace nothing will happen. Your are the real Doer. I am fully surrendering unto Your sweet will.  Let Your desire be fulfilled."
Bhaktas think one should use all their inherent abilities to solve any crisis and cultivate the idea that, “It is His strength and that He is supplying the energy - and without His energy, I cannot do anything. If He wishes then only will I be rescued - it is fully depending on Him.” Whatever strength God has given must be utilised remembering that He is the final doer. This is the ideal way of surrender.

~ In-depth study ~

All know prapatti váda / surrender theory is an important and vital element in dharmic life. Unfortunately, around the globe, this is often grossly misunderstood or entirely ignored by some. In certain regions, people have heard of the theory of prapatti váda / surrender theory, but they often misuse it in their practical life. Whereas, in other lands, surrender theory is basically absent from their approach to life, as those people are drowned in materialism. In that case, they forget that they are not the source of their own energy, rather it is supplied by God. A case in point is that they have no control over their old age and death.

Hypocritical prapatti - 2

Some wrongly think that prapatti (surrender) means that, “We need not do anything.” In result, they ignore key aspects of life and fail to execute what duties they should do. They do not bother about resolving important issues; instead they justify that God will do everything. They feel they should just keep quiet and wait for God to do. On a superficial level, some may initially feel this is some kind of devotional approach. But this type of misunderstanding of prapatti / surrender theory has created huge problems in various communities. It is a defective path that has led to so much suffering. This misguided theory bted a certain lethargy within the people; and, as a result, certain communities could not develop materially, in comparison to other parts of the globe. Here below Baba comments about their wrong understanding of prapatti.

Baba has told that people suffered from this psychic disease for a long time. That's why they neglected material development. They wrongly thought that, "Everything God is doing so I need not do anything.” This was their defective and lazy outlook.

Negative to surrender

In contrast, in other areas, a feeling of prapatti / surrender is wholly absent because some citizens do not think about God at all. Rather, with their inflated ego and self-centeredness, they believe that they are everything and there is no Divine Entity. In that case, the unfortunate and misguided trend is to live life according to material enjoyment, satisfying one’s own desires - thinking that they are in control of everything. Such persons forget that they are not the source of their own energy, rather it is supplied by God. Proof being they have no control over their old age and death.

So when tragedy falls, people suffer from an onslaught of problems and psychic disorders, diseases of indulgence, and degeneration. Ultimately, by not believing in God, they just lose all hope and become depressed. That's why a growing percentage of the population in materialistic nations (a) attends regular counseling sessions and (b) is on antidepressant medication. In addition, there are others who become addicted to vices such as alcohol and drugs, and / or indulged in sensual pleasures and degrading activities. Overall, a life devoid of Cosmic ideation proves disastrous.

AMPS: hypocritical prapatti - 3

As sadhakas, it is our duty to exercise all our might and intellect to clean-up the organisation. We should engage fully to bring a dharmic flow back into our Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, all the while surrendering unto Him. This should be our approach - as that is true prapatti váda or surrender theory.

Unfortunately, some in our AMPS have fallen into a hypocritical mindset. In their duplicitous manner, they say, “Surrender to Baba and Baba will fix the organisation, AMPS.  In so doing, they are committing pratyavaya.

But if in their own personal life they have a problem, they use all their energies and work day and night to solve that problem. This is their hypocritical manner which they have adopted.

Ancient problem rampant today

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “The Sanskrit equivalent for marriage is viváha (vi – vah + ghaiṋ): it means, after the ceremony, the man and woman can no longer live as libertines or as irresponsible so-called family people. They have to discharge their full obligations as bharttá and kalatra, responsible husband and responsible wife.”

“Another Sanskrit equivalent for “woman” is nárii, which is feminine gender. But Shiva used the term kalatra, in the neuter; for to her husband a woman is a wife, but to her children and other members of the society, she is as dignified as her male counterpart. So by declaring a married lady to be kalatra, Shiva gave her special status, and addressed her in neuter terms.”

“The liberal meaning of the term viváha is “live one’s life in a new way with a special type of responsibility”. This is the underlying significance of the Shaeva system of marriage.”

Ananda Marga philosophy states, “In His life, Shiva Himself married with this commitment. We can say without the least hesitation that Shiva was the first person in this world to marry in the proper sense of the term.” (1)

Note: That which was common 7000 years ago has now again come into vogue: That same disease has become prevalent today. A huge percentage of people around the globe are leading libertine life - especially in the materialistic areas. They produce children and neglect to take any responsibility. They do not like to be bound in conjugal relations and shoulder the responsibility of helping the child. The ones who suffer the most are the children and the mother. Often such children wind up in foster care - mentally and physically scarred. It is a serious crisis - watch out. Where capitalism is growing that disease will spread. Our duty is to propagate this teaching - if we bring even one libertine onto the path of responsibility then at least to some small degree the problem is solved.

How to have smart children

Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji says, "Those who are vegetarian produce more lymph because they get chlorophyll from green vegetation, so their brains are more developed...the intellectual standard of children born to meat eating parents is lower than that of vegetarians." (1)

The success of every entity

“All the entities of the universe are on the move. No one has come to rest, to lament unnecessarily. And in this movement lies the success of every entity, the colourful glamour of one’s existence. So move on individually, move on collectively. Let your sincere help illuminate those who have lagged behind on the path of movement.” (Ananda Vanii #64)

Note 1: True Ananda Vaniis have a number whereas Fake Ananda Vaniis do not - just as a fake car license plate has no number. By this way, you can easily recognise a Fake Ananda Vanii.
